Abstract:
Real-life parables illustrate practical communication tools that can be used by both caregivers and the recipients of that care. This is a companion volume to The Weeping Willow: Encounters with Grief (OUP, 2007), and it presents more complex encounters and nuanced emotions, based upon additional years of experience. Each chapter contains a vignette, with teaching notes frequently embedded in the story as “aside” comments. They also contain “Notes to the Practitioner” and conclusions. The Notes section specifically address preparedness for common end-of-life situations with professional directives, but most of the book teaches by examples gleaned from hands-on counseling experience.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses Jane Bolin's career in the legal profession and the lived experiences that produced her as the nation's first African American woman judge. A member of a small unit of black women lawyers, Bolin's early practice mirrored that of other black women lawyers who gained entrance, but not full integration, into the legal profession. Jane's strides in the legal profession from 1931 to 1939 were made relatively quickly, suggesting a tale of easy access and an unobstructed path. However, an examination of her professional life beyond the pioneering peaks reveals the pervasive discrimination that Bolin overcame, and unravels the threads of gender, class, race, credentialism, and politics that colored the fabric of her professional life.

Abstract:
The field of knowledge of Occupational Therapy is diversified and expanding. This book addresses several themes inherent in the profession from different theoretical and empirical perspectives. Organized by occupational therapy teachers from the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ), the book consolidates the scientific production of different authors and is organized around current themes presented to Occupational Therapy: professional education, health-related approaches and actions, as well as different approaches focusing on the socio-cultural perspectives of the profession. Some texts addressing the history of Occupational Therapy at UFRJ complement the work. The wide scope and diversity of this book are ensured in chapters that report experiences associated with university extension, research, and undergraduate teaching; address Occupational Therapy in the hospital, Occupational Health, Mental Health, and Psychosocial Care settings; emphasize the professional/cultural interface, social issues, and territorial and socio-community approaches; bring ethnic-racial and gender discussions. Finally, the history of the Occupational Therapy course at UFRJ is covered in the last three chapters: the struggling trajectory to establish the course is addressed in the first of these chapters; the second reports how the course has expanded since its first years; the third brings the path to consolidation of the Occupational Therapy service at the university hospital. This book, which is based on successful experiences and current scientific production, will certainly provide its readers with important reflections.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses the decline amateurism during the Cold War era. The Cold War realpolitik, rising global commerce, interorganizational friction, and the advent of television converged to deliver debilitating blows to the amateur ideal. Still, International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Avery Brundage had the opportunity to position Olympic amateurism on a more favorable and defensible footing. By lifting the hermetic seals to the IOC's financial coffers, undertaking professional and jurisdictional restructuring, and adopting an uncompromising stance toward known violators, he might have given amateurism a greater chance of survival. However, Brundage's lack of administrative foresight inadvertently pushed amateurism further down the path toward dissolution and decline.
