Jones, Dana. "Professional versus Academic Accounting Graduates' Reasons for Career Path Choice." Thesis, Northcentral University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10182893.

Abstract:

The inadequate number of accountants graduating to fill the demand of accounting professionals and academia has been documented as a problem within the field of accounting. Attrition among students in programs is prevalent and little has been done to understand the challenges confronting the accounting academic community as well as the accounting profession as a whole. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to better understand the perceptions and reasons accounting professionals and educators made the career path choice they did and what they perceived would encourage students to enter the field of accounting. The data source for this qualitative case study was interviews. A convenience sample size of 10 accounting professionals (certified public accountants) and 10 accounting professors with doctorate degrees were recruited. A force field analysis was used as the overarching theoretical framework to understand the driving and restraining factors that led accounting professionals and professors to select their career path. Content analysis was used to determine the emergent themes of the study. The findings in this study were organized into the following 10 themes: (a) job stability, (b) opportunity to impact the lives of others, (c) love of challenges, (d) the lucrative nature of the field of accounting, (e) respectability of the profession, (f) better understanding, (g) change in perceptions, (h) higher quality professors, (i) stronger community outreach, and (j) more application and less theory. The first five themes aligned with research question one regarding the participants’ career path choice and the later five themes with research question two with respect to what the participants believed would encourage others to choose a career in accounting. Considering both sub groups, professional accountants and accounting professors, view the solutions to the dilemma of the shortage in the field of accounting differently, in the future it would be of value to conduct a similar study on the national level, followed by the international level, based on this epidemic being of global magnitude.

Bell, Cynthia. "How Work Role Transition Influences Professional Identity| The Career Path from Corporate Manager to University Professor." Thesis, The George Washington University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3643877.

Full text
Abstract:

This phenomenological research study examines the individual experiences of midcareer corporate managers (practitioners) with professional identity change, while undergoing work role transition to become college or university professors (scholars). Using a conceptual framework of culture, work role, and professional identity, this study focused on a group of twelve men and women who made an intentional decision to leave an objectively defined management role to enter a different subjectively defined teaching role.

The findings generated four conclusions. First, change in identity and work-role transition manifests with different affective responses in men and women. Second, cognitive decision making and intentionality are different for men and women in work role transitions. Third, career transitions are easier when autonomous decision making, continuing education opportunities, experimentation with provisional selves, and equal levels of social status, are present. Fourth, career transitions are more difficult when loss of social status and financial stability, liminality, and identity conflict or lack of career anchor, are observed.

Due to recent economic conditions related to the recession of 2008, and attendant fall-out related to the current career landscape, Mid-life Career Changers from Industry to Academia was the focus of a Professional Development Workshop during both the 73rd and 74th annual meetings of the Academy of Management (AoM). Because of growing interest in the topic, it has been included on the agenda of the AoM 75th annual meeting scheduled for Vancouver, Canada in 2015.

Szech, Laura Elisabeth. "On a path toward culturally sustaining pedagogy: how teachers experience race, culture, family, and family literacies in a professional development course." Diss., University of Iowa, 2019. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/6866.

Full text
Abstract:
Public schools teachers in the U.S. strive to reach the needs of all students in the elementary classroom. However, teachers are increasingly expected to follow standardized curriculum. Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy (Paris, 2012) pushes toward individualized educational practices and against the assimilationism embedded in standardization. This study considers the ways in which nine women-identified teachers, one Black, two Latina, six white, who teach elementary school in a Midwestern university town, experience, discuss, and implement Culturally Sustaining Pedagogy in a professional development course, specifically through the lens of the following question: In a course on culturally sustaining pedagogy, how do teachers experience race, culture, families, and family literacies? Grounded in empirical research that considers teaching and learning through a sociocultural lens, and in the theoretical scholarship of Critical Discourse Analysis and Critical Pedagogy, the purpose of this qualitative, narrative inquiry is to describe teachers’ learning and responses to culturally sustaining pedagogical practices in order to understand this process and its implementation. Data for this qualitative inquiry were gathered over five months in a professional development course setting using the qualitative methods of observations, interviews, audio recordings, photographs, detailed field notes, and participant self-reflections. The data collected was analyzed through descriptive coding (Miles, Huberman, & Saldaña, 2014), narrative analysis (Schaafsma & Vinz, 2011), and Critical Discourse Analysis (Fairclough, 2015; Gee, 2014). Results from the study suggest that engagement in culturally sustaining practices is constrained by the standardizations of school, in addition to the discomfort and lack of knowledge of some teachers when talking about race and power in the elementary classroom. Findings also suggest that teachers’ explicit engagement with research and discussions regarding these constraints led to new culturally sustaining practices.

Abstract:
Our research has 2 objectives: to define the careers of primary school teachers and to consider their long term work commitment. The work of primary school teachers has recently been changed, on the one hand the number of required working years has been lengthened and on the other there has been a multiplication of reforms in order to improve pupils' results with regard to the international league tables. These decisions affect school teachers' careers and their activity on a daily basis, two aspects which are rarely considered together. Linked to that, we are envisaging our research from the notion of professionnal development which seems appropriate to us in order to find the indicators of construction of skills and identity, underlying reorganisations in the progress of careers. In order to do this, our enquiry is based on the narratives of mid-career primary school teachers reflecting on their professional lives. The analysis shows a system of events and resources which is possible to categorise, less in an orderly logic than in a revealing perspective of dynamics of commitment to work. In order to confront the complexity of their work, it turns out that primary school teachers restructure their activity and their career(s) in accordance with the difficulties experienced in their work (their nature, intensity, rhythm...) and with the resources used in such circumstances. So the necessary conditions for professional development are coherent with biographical elements (career paths, consistent motivation and elements of the family spheres...) and are combined with the elements of the activity in context (the working environment of the different positions held, the crossed effects of national and local educational politics,...). All in all, being a primary school teacher today and intending to remain so, requires a constant updating of experience and identity

Thesis: S.B., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Department of Mechanical Engineering, 2018.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
For current MIT undergrads, life after graduation can seem daunting. With uncertainty about job duration, graduate school, and career paths in general, many undergraduates enter the real world unsure of what the future holds, or if what they have decided to do post-graduation is the "best" option. As such, MIT undergraduates in the Undergraduate Practice Opportunities Program (UPOP) were asked to interview professionals that they believed had jobs they would one day also like to have. This resulted in a large dataset of career paths for an extremely diverse group of individuals, all with their own unique stories and time-lines. This data was filtered, cleaned, and analyzed to gain insight into life after graduation. From the analyzed data it was found that the distributions of durations spent at graduate school, in companies, or in specific job titles were all not significantly different, and the average duration spent in each of these options was 2-6 years, with some noticeable outliers. Overall these analyses showed that there are many options for students in the first 10 years after completing their BS, and there is no clear "correct" option to choose from.

Francis, Andrew. "Paths of Becoming: A Hermeneutic Phenomenological Inquiry Into Teacher Candidate Professional Self-Understanding." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2015. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/32530.

Full text
Abstract:
An extensive body of educational literature examines the process and implications of how an individual becomes a teacher, but studies within this field often minimize or ignore the existential nature of this act of becoming. Something happens to the individual as they enter into the teaching profession and commence their teaching practice and in many educational jurisdictions, those happenings are left for the novice teacher to grapple with in isolation. This study presents interpretations of four teacher candidates’ sense of becoming and provides a meta-analysis of important existential themes arising from examinations of the participants’ professional self-understanding. This study engages with the concept of existential becoming in teacher candidates through a hermeneutic phenomenological approach to interpretation and understanding. Four teacher candidates, about to enter their final teaching practicum before graduating from an eight-month Bachelor of Education program as certified teachers, participated in this research project which included one-on-one interviews, journal analysis and focus groups. Interpretations of these teacher candidates’ understandings of becoming a teacher are organized by Kelchtermans’ professional self-understanding framework and presented through the use of poetic vignettes and images of the teacher candidates’ paths of becoming. These aesthetic representations of teacher candidates’ understandings of becoming offer an alternative and existentially-informed vehicle for teacher candidate reflection and professional self-understanding. Data analysis and hermeneutic interpretations among and between the researcher and the participants revealed a number of existential themes present in the teacher candidates’ understandings of becoming a teacher, including: fear, responsibility, authenticity, purpose, and the self. Each theme is examined via a connection to both existential and teacher education literature and implications for teacher education programs are discussed.

Kolu, M. Kersti. "A Longitudinal Analysis of New Jersey School Superintendents, their Professional Profiles and Career Paths." Thesis, Rutgers The State University of New Jersey - New Brunswick, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3637719.

Full text
Abstract:

This longitudinal study highlights changes to the demographics of the superintendency for the 15 year period from 1996 through 2011 and career paths of those New Jersey superintendents in position in 2011. The findings are for all districts in New Jersey as well as contextually based on the districts’ geographic locations, socioeconomic standings, and school configurations. The purpose of the study is to provide thought provoking findings and stimulate research of administrative leadership in education.

Demographically, the most significant change during the 15 year period is the number of female superintendents. From 1996 until 2011, the percentage of female superintendents rises from 13% of all New Jersey superintendents to 28%. Socioeconomically, the largest increases in female superintendents occur in the two highest socioeconomic groupings.

Average annual salaries rise from $100, 912 in 1996 to $167,905 in 2011 for New Jersey superintendents. When separated by gender, in 1996, the average salary for women is 6% less than the average male salary. In 2011 female superintendents earn 7% less. Racial/ethnic minority superintendents earn more than the average annual income for all superintendents for the entire length of the study, from a 9% differential in 1996 to 12% in 2011.

While the career paths for the New Jersey superintendency typically move through the education system, from teacher to principal to assistant superintendent. A second career path appears to be emerging with 18% of the 2011 superintendents recruited from outside the New Jersey educational system.

Superintendent movement between districts and out of the system impacts districts through high turnover rates. While statewide tenure for superintendents averages at five years, in the context of district grade configurations, the average tenure for superintendents in k-12 and k-8 districts drops to 2.7 years and increase to 7.5 years for superintendents in special school districts. Socioeconomically, average tenure for the poorest and two wealthiest socioeconomic groups (DFG A, I, J) is at 2.7 years.

Abstract:
Increasingly flexible labour markets have caused a revolution in established career patterns. Youn'g, educated and skilled workers find themselves in protean careers in ~ which strategies of action, cultural meanings and objectives are being profoundly challenged. In this thesis I reconstruct how two groups of e~rly career professionals based in England and Italy and working in the fields of human resources, engineering and accountancy construct their careers. The analysis is substantiated mainly by sixty in-depth interviews, with the support of some textual analysis and notes from few observation experiments. .The comparative dimension between professionals based in Italy and England departs from a recognition of some basic aspects of Structuration Theory. My analysis, though, tries to embed agents in their own cultural contexts by using categories such as 'repertoires of evaluation' and 'cultural repertoires'. In this view, the ways in which professionals interact with the institutions available in their contexts, turning them to their own advantage, constitute strategies of action typical of each context. I consider this, in particular, in relation to the institutions of professions, organisations and the position in the life course. Then, I discuss the role of the graduate career propaganda in forging professionals' ambitions and I critically assess the definitions of work, certainty and the concept of a good job among interviewees' responses. I ultimately suggest the adoption of a flexi-live perspective in an attempt to understand the wider framework in which strategies of action are taken and the reasoning behind these. This allows us to go beyond the employment status and look broadly at the mechanisms in which careers are constructed. Different modulations of individualism, individualisation and self-entrepreneurship emerge in the strategies of the two groups of professionals giving shape to interesting solutions: professionals interviewed who were based in England appear strongly attached to individualism and self-entrepreneurship, but tend to follow institutional routes in a poorly individualised manner, simply by taking opportunities available. On the contrary, professionals based in Italy strive to conceive of themselves as individuals and self-entrepreuners, yet the lack of standardised work practices forces them to engage in extremely individualised strategies, mostly by avoiding identified constraints.

The Professional Education is an area of teaching deeply interrelated to the insertion of the individuals in the world of work once under the premise of their relationship between education and work. This study aimed to depict the school evasion in the subsequent courses of Colégio Estadual de Pato Branco ( CEPB) through the realization of a diagnosis about the flow of the enrolments in the courses and the measure of the identified indices of evasion in the period between 2007 to 2012, as well as to identify what are the factors that are causing that. For that, the research was divided in two different stages, the first as a quantitative one which comprehended to analyze the school institution reports in order to collect data and measure the enrolments flow and the calculation of the evasion indices, and the second one as a qualitative research through semi structures interviews in order to identify the possible factors that contribute to the school dropouts. It was identified that the CEPB technical subsequent courses registered high level of evasion during the period of 2007 and 2012, considering that the highest levels were on the Administration and Informatics Technic courses and, the first years of courses have the highest levels of evasions. It was also identified that the dropouts in the subsequent courses show complexity and results of a correlation of several elements being the social and economics the most relevant for the decision of abandoning the professional education course.

This study discusses the social process of reconfiguration of professional identities of teachers of English as a foreign language through the analysis of narratives elicited during research interviews. For this research project I interviewed four teachers individually. The analysis is carried on envisioning the re-creation of the professional and the academic paths the teachers have followed until now and also their possible professional future projects. The constructed meanings are interpreted according to the studies of Interactional Sociolinguistics and are situated in the contemporary scene. This scene will be contemplated based on its influence on the reconfiguration of work relations, on the production of discourse and on the constant process of reshaping and reconstructing identities. The analysis focuses on the co-construction of narratives and explanations, in order to redefine professional and academic paths, future projects and professional identities. The trajectories and projects are analyzed based on the observation of the elaboration of the central point of the narratives, on the evaluations proposed, on the development of explanations, on the creation of coherence relations. Projects these that involve a continuous dedication to the teaching profession, in spite of all its problems, for the first two teachers interviewed; while presenting doubts and probable professional changes for the other two teachers. The characterization and function of narratives, teachers´ beliefs concerning their professional acting and the social value given to it or not, the making of teaching as a profession, as much as the development of their careers and some particular traces of English teaching are discussed, taking into consideration the contemporary scenario. In this context emerge new ways of being a professional, facilitating new choices, changes, paths, realities and identity reconfigurations.

Abstract:

Perera, Agnella Katrise. "Perceptions of Females in Virginia Regarding the Personal and Professional Factors Impacting Their Career Paths to the Superintendency." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/64244.

Abstract:
Females currently represent the largest number of teachers in the United States but yet they represent the smallest number of superintendents (Miller, 2009). While female students and educators are increasing, few of them have attained the superintendency positions within school divisions (Hopkins, 2012). This phenomenon was examined in the Commonwealth of Virginia through a mixed methods study, which provided an understanding of the career development experiences of female superintendents in public K-12 school divisions. The researcher utilized Schein's career anchor theory (1990), which examined the personal and professional values and dimensions that influence career choices. Results of the study found that attaining the superintendency among female leaders has not been primarily influenced by career anchors, but rather by their own commitment and dedication to public service. While the main barrier for females to achieve the superintendent's position was related to familial roles, they coping mechanisms of these include emulating the abilities of males or employing the nurturing qualities of females. The study recommends that school boards should design and implement policies that provide an enabling working environment for rising female leaders. Further, educational leadership organizations may explore establishing affinity groups to improve networking among education professionals with diverse genders and cultures.

The objective of this thesis is to analyse the professional identity of teachers of Spanish as a foreign language in two European countries: France and Spain. In spite of the development of English, the most studied language in the world, Spanish is growing at a rapid pace. However, although teachers are the most important element in language teaching, research does not seem to be interested in the analysis of their professional and socioeconomic circumstances and the role of emotions in the workplace. Indeed, the teachers of Spanish face multiple challenges, not only in France where Spanish competes with English, but also in Spain, where the national language has become a new source of income. How is it possible then, to offer a quality teaching when the heart of teaching remains unclear? This thesis offers the analysis of 76 interviews to teachers of Spanish and 329 responses of an online questionnaire

This research aims to define the profile and analyze the personal and professional path of Social Work s graduate students, supported by affirmative actions promoted by PUC-Rio. The premise is that higher education completion, driven by affirmative action policies, positively boosts the transformation of social relationships, modifying probable path of those individuals, in what concerns social mobility. In order to reach proposed objective and based on indications from empirical field, we chose a descriptive research of quanti-qualitative nature. For data gathering, we did a survey using a form filled by Social Work s graduate students, enrolled in the period from 2000 to 2010. Herewith, quantitative data and an extensive documentary and bibliographical collection were analyzed jointly. At the end of this research, we realized that the individuals, coming from lower class, have actual possibilities of access to higher education, through affirmative action policies and, because this opportunity, they can stop a perverse cycle of exclusion. They transform their own life paths, changing the deterministic forecasts about their future considering social class. Thus, they become positive examples for their families and neighborhood, successful references and genuine examples of social mobility.

This study problematized the current career path of professional basic education of São Paulo, as official proposal that makes up the bureaucratic apparatus in its relation to the expectations of teachers. The objective was to identify the characteristics of the plan (LC 836/1997 and 1.143/2011), offered in the state of Sao Paulo and verify if it meets the expectations of teachers in basic education. This goal unfolded in the following specific objectives: 1) verify if the career path offered by the state of Sao Paulo to the educators respect the principles and provisions of national law, as determined by the hierarchy of the bureaucratic model, and what features set for a career, 2) verify if the career path offered by the state of Sao Paulo encourages the entry of new professionals in the public system and the continuity of current teachers and, consequently, if it aligns with a modern model or traditional career; 3 ) verify if the responses offered by bureaucratic regulations or reregulation include the expectations of professionals about the prospects for career development and completion of the profession. This was done using the concept of Bureaucracy constructed by Weber (2008), their potential disruptions introduced by Blau (1964), the difference between the traditional and modern career by Chanlat (1995) and, finally, the concepts of performativity and re-regulation of Ball (2002) as a basis for responding to the initial problem and meet the goals built. To collect data, this research used a qualitative approach, which had as main focuses: the lifting of the teachers' expectations, the disparities between national laws and Sao Paulo and the demands of teachers, and the ideas and actions of state government engaged with the issue. In terms of procedures, it was employed gathering and analysis of academic production related to the subject-matter, gathering and analysis of documents first-hand of the unions and government, gathering and analysis of national and state that involves the issue of career plan of the public teaching of basic education and, finally, realization and analysis of semistructured interviews with teacher's union representative, government s representative and a school teacher. As axes for the analysis of data collected, the work focused features of bureaucracy, revealed by the confrontation between the conflicting political actions (legislation varied), and issues related to neo-liberalism that mark the demands made on items relating to careers. Initial hypotheses that could be confirmed by this research, say the current career plan does not meet the expectations of teachers, beginning to merge models, introducing modern elements to a traditional career, and finally, demanding new features professional actors the school

Abstract:
Are we actually facing a fundamental destabilization of employment in France since the end of the “Trente Glorieuses” ? The point of this thesis is to question the idea of a contemporary time which would be described as a “deep dislocation of the wage earners” (Castel, 2009), and which would result in a major transformation of the professional paths from a generation of workers to another. The empirical foundations of the idea of social progress reversion, in terms of employment, are examined on the basis of three dimensions of the professional paths : employment, unemployment, job insecurity and qualification. Their evolutions are apprehended by a quantitative approach, combining both transverse, lengthwise, gender-related and cohort-related outlooks. The professional paths of three cohorts of workers (1945, 1960 and 1975) are compared one to each other on the basis of INSEE’s Labour Force surveys (enquêtes Emploi) and on the Permanent Demographic Sample (Echantillon Démographique Permanent) datas. This thesis’ general hypothesis challenges the idea of an opposition between the professional paths of, in one hand, generations of the“full-employment” whom had entered their jobs during the “trente glorieuses” and on the other hand the later generations, whose careers are said to be marked by a general deterioration of their working conditions. The first part of this thesis questions the relevancy of this opposition between “full-employment” and “under-employment” generations : by highlighting gender effects, it puts forward the fact that, despite the massification of unemployment, the model of wage society is reinforcing since the end of the “trente glorieuses”, especially by expanding the employment norm to women’s work. However, the feminization of contract-based employment is highly linked to the rise of a derogatory form of employment – part time jobs. The second part challenges the idea of a sudden blast and a globalization of job insecurity. It reveals, though derogatory forms of employment had expanded widely throughout years and cohorts, that it is more of a new way of entering the first company or the first job, than a long-term situation which could undermine the professional paths. The third part focuses on the workers’ professional paths. It examines the idea according to which there have been a huge worsening of the conditions of career development throughout the cohorts of workers

Abstract: This study aims to analyze and understand how, and to what extent, both initial and continuous training contribute to the construction of the professional identity of primary school teachers, their careers paths and professional development. Our methodological option was centered in a qualitative and interpretative approach which used the semi-directive interview and document analysis as data collection techniques. Our convenience sample is formed by seven teachers whose initial training was accomplished in different periods and different educational institutions. In order to process the data, we followed the steps recommended for content analysis. Some of the dimensions of analysis were defined a priori and others emerged from the speech of the respondents. The results of this study show that the construction of a professional identity is a process in which multiple influences come together, are combined and interact in various ways. Two of these influences are constituted by the initial training and the continuous training which have both a strong contribution in the complex and dynamic process of constructing a professional identity.

Abstract:
The evolution of the conceptual approach to disability, the guidelines developed by international organizations, declined at the european level in terms of rights and social participation of people with disabilities gradually led to the establishment of an inclusive society, with impacts on access to education, vocational training or higher education and professional insertion of young people with disabilities. The subject of this thesis in Education Science is part of a qualitative interpretive and comprehensive survey with phenomenological sensitivity, and focuses on the training path towards the professional insertion of young peoplewith disabilities. It proposes, from their stories, to understand the personal subjective meaning that each one can give to his/her path and his own life, to understand how these young people develop their vocational guidance project, how they can become the authors of their training and of their insertion through the experience of disability, for some of them with physical impairments. The chosen approach was to give priority to the narrative feature with an opening to otherness, a sensitive listening to the fragments of course delivered by these young people, and an analysis in a multi-referentiality bringing intelligibility to this research topic and emerging phenomena. A first analysis-synthesis work for each of the portraits with a reading based on key notions such as subject-actor, psychological empowerment, events, bifurcations and biographical transitions, gives prospects of generalization in the form of pathways typologies

This study aimed to assess the employability of women late in the labor market. The increase in female participation in the labor market trend and phenomenon is worldwide, not just a consequence of the development of capitalism itself, but also the transformation of values, beliefs and assumptions regarding the participation of women in society and a reconfiguration of roles in the family plan. Think these changes are ongoing and are not without contradictions and asymmetries, primarily at income and access to opportunities for greater relevance and financial and symbolic price in the market, compared with the male contingent. In the population and the Brazilian labor market is a number not estimated, but certainly significant in women who have chosen at the beginning of their working lives, the experience of motherhood and family experience to the detriment of the development work for a few years later and various reasons, resume, career setting which, in this research, we call "late insertion" in market trabalho.A late insertion occurs near the mature-age, around 40 years, a process called "early carrer," associated with people in their 20s. The study is qualitative in nature, being classified as descriptive research. As for the means, it is a field in multiple-case study method, using the technique of life history, and six women selected as subjects through the snowball sampling technique. During data collection and data analysis was adopted semistructured interviews and general analytical procedure known (COLLIS, HUSSEY, 2005) which governs the procedures referred to in theoretically based analytical categories and preestablished. The survey results show that the late inclusion of motivating factors are related both to the desire for personal fulfillment and financial independence, but also the need to supplement family income. Among the employment and entrepreneurial options, we noticed a greater affinity for the latter. These career paths are the facilitating factors, personal experience of a social nature gained in maturity, and the way a mature person lives with the optimization of the time factor. On the other hand, the lack of concrete and objective experience is present as an impediment to the insertion and positioning in the labor market, especially in the expectation that disclosure of a gap is produced by the group and the expectations of experience expected of a woman being personal maturity. The study revealed complex experiments, but significant in terms of self-realization and future career prospects.

This study aims to explore professional and personal experience of counselling psychologists and the influences on one becoming a counselling psychologist. Within the study, the researcher sorted interviews of the individual experience of professional development of counselling psychologists. Through the content of particular events and predicaments that researcher attempted to understand their personal subjective experience, feeling, thoughts or beliefs, and their influence on the professional development. This study utilized purposive sampling . There are four counselling psychologists with a master’s degree or above, a license of counselling psychologist, and have worked as a counselling psychologist for over 5 years, as eligible participants for the interviews. The researcher used a qualitative study method withsemi-structured in-depth interview. Researcherused “thematic conent analysis” for data analysis. Through the researcher’s analysis and interpretation of the script, four subjects were induced respectively; the stage as a novice as if a toddler, the development of professional skills and expansion of awareness, the development of the counselling psychologists being intertwined by personal and professional lives, and lastly the outline of the development. This study found that professional and personal experiences intertwine and grow together. The process of becoming a counselling psychologist is almost like a process of a “repeating cycle”, in which there are advances and retreats respectively and simultaneously. This study attempts to look at the developmental process of counselling psychologists from different perspectives, attaching importance to "external professional training", and at the same time paying attention to "individual internal experience." The attitudes and reactions that accompany one’s beliefs point to the importance of self-understanding of counselling psychologists. Whether it is professional or personal understanding, the importance of self-awareness promotes individual understanding of self. Finally, this study has found that maturity is the continuous deepening of personal and professional life; from outwards to inwards, and inside out. According to the research findings, the researcher proposed suggestions and reflections on the development of counselling psychologists. Regarding the topic of this study, “Revisiting the Professional Developmen Patht of a Counselling Psychologist”, the researcher believes that there is no lack of relevant research on professional outlook and development of counselling psychologists domestically or internationally. However, the researcher studiedthat the term “revisiting” will highlight two aspects. First, the past research has continued to focus on the professional development of counselling psychologists. Second, this study will further explore the professional development of counselling psychologists.

This thesis applies self-narrative method to explore the meaning of a special education professional’s life meaning. It is a journey of re-finding my self. When I looked back my life, I realized I have gone through different stages of transitions and development: From departing from my family-of-origin, graduated from schools, getting married, entering working field and starting my career as a special education helping professional. These experiences have given me the opportunity to examine how my career was intertwined by my fears of authority figures. The death of my father lead to my internal insecurities, they influenced in my career. I used to look both of my fears and the loss of my beloved father as negative effects. However, through writing my own story, I gradually came to realize the cause of not being able to be assertive to express my real feelings and changed my memories of my father as a positive and optimistic impact in my current career. In addition, I realized I always got a strong desire to help others, for example, I could be brave and unhesitatingly with sympathetic mind to step forward to help students who were in need. Above all, I believe that I now gain tranquility, security and also increase my self-acceptance due to my working experiences and life searching process. My career in special education helped me experience the transformation from the state of being self-negative to being assertive. By sharing my story through writing, it has also helped me accept myself as an imperfect person, knowing that the importance of self-awareness and realize how limited I am. Furthermore, I also learn that when I strive for my own survival, I must also give others leeway. Furthermore, I learn that that we cannot change everything but we can change our mind to perceive things in different perspective. So, I have changed my attitude to face and deal with my past painful memories when they rush back into my mind. In conclusion, what I have learned from my work and students is to let go of the past and embrace the future so that I can keep going on in life.

Abstract:
Athletic directors (ADs) in institutions of higher education are the chief administrators of their respective athletic departments. The purpose of this study is to describe the current demographic, educational, and professional characteristics of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II and III ADs. Forty-five Division II ADs and 105 Division III ADs responded to a survey of 725 institutions, returning response rates of 15.5% and 24.1% respectively. Findings for social and educational demographics mirror those of previous studies. Subjects in both divisions studied athletic administration in post-graduate work, but studies in education were also common. Experiences in coaching and athletic administration were most frequent for both samples. Division II ADs were notably experienced in compliance, while teaching experiences were common with Division III ADs. Both sets were heavily involved in finance and internal policy, but Division II responses emphasized community relations while Division III responses emphasized campus relations. Limited resources challenged ADs in both groups. In conclusion, NCAA institutions, especially those with athletic administration departments and significant minority populations, should promote NCAA diversity initiatives campus-wide. Students and professionals preparing for a career as a Division II or Division III AD should pursue post-graduate education in an administrative field, preferably in concentrations of sport or education. They should choose a career path involving teaching, coaching, or an administrative specialization within athletics, and they should be familiar with finance and NCAA regulations. Recommendations for future research include detailed analysis of AD job design and investigating whether ADs can be clustered based on their involvement in various tasks.

Abstract The interior design in Taiwan has burgeoned since early 1960s, when the booming economy of Taiwan expedited its growth and made it blossom. Up to now, interior decoration of private dwelling places and business space becomes a necessity and its importance is generally recognized. For those students graduating from interior design departments, what are the competences and capabilities they need but they are not yet fully equipped with when facing the fierce competition of a globalized and ever-changing world? Are their career lives in step with their initial expectation after they received a complete four-year professional training in interior design? Does there exist any discrepancy? This objective of this thesis is to explore the situation of those hundreds of graduates of the Interior Design Department at Chung Yuan Christian University, the first such department to be established in Taiwan, by means of the SPSS statistic analysis of the questionnaires coupled with face-to-face interviews of some of the graduates, as well as a review of related literature in order to elucidate the employment status of the graduate students, their career plans, and the application of what they learn to what they are working on etc. It also explores if there exits any discrepancy between what is taught in the classrooms and what is actually being applied in their professional lives in the hope of coming up with some constructive suggestions. The conclusion of this research is stated as below; 1. Although there is a discrepancy between the professional education they received in college and the competences they needed for practical interior design projects, this discrepancy exerts little effect on those interior design graduates in their career lives. 2. For those graduates who chose to quit the interior design industry, the main reasons are mostly attributed to long working hours, irregular working schedules, or lack of interest or personal devotion. The effect of the professional education they received in college is actually not quite significant. 3. Regarding the discrepancy between interior design courses offered at school and the competency actually needed in professional lives, most of the graduates believe that theories and designing concepts taught at school are sufficient, but there is indeed a large gap between those courses and the interior design projects they tackle on a daily basis. 4. No matter the graduates choose to stay in this industry or transfer to other industries, they all believe that it will benefit their career lives quite a lot by adding in on-the-job training during summer and winter vacations and taking some courses on practical design projects. 5. Among the most important factors that exert a far-reaching influence on the students in their future careers are the teachers’ characters, what they had said and done to the students, and their devotion to their teaching jobs. Key words: interior design, career determination, professional education, competency.

Abstract:
This dissertation focuses on understanding how architecture can be explored in the house where the architects live. Based on contents that bring together works by architects who have been rehearsing about the house itself, from modern times to the present day. We will understand this practice as an ally of the architect, who incorporates and develops the creation process and idealizes its formal issues within his personal space. Through a representative analysis between the "house where the architects live" and the "house designed for clients", we intend to apprehend, where architectural qualities, explored by architects, can be expressed (within their own habitat), in the responses to the needs of their clients, and understand how drawing techniques, different types of language and the solutions approached in their homes were applied and reflected in their works. Or whether or not they had an impact on their identity as an architect. Thus, the research question of this dissertation arises: How can the houses inhabited by architects serve as an experimental platform for their professional path? This analysis reveals the contributions or constraints on the part of these architectures explored in the houses inhabited by the architects, regarding the definition of their architectural language. It shows the relevance of using the house itself as an experimental platform, enhancing the architect's creative process and forming his own identity of architectural projects for clients.

Abstract:

The study was prompted by the decline in accounting enrolments and the ongoing criticism due to learners’ poor performance in the Accounting subject in South Africa. Given the increasing need for accounting graduates and, more importantly, qualified accounting professionals, this study investigated the preconceived perceptions participating high school learners in selected schools in the Mafikeng area had about the accounting profession at the time of this study. The study drew on a rich body of existing literature and adopted the social cognitive career theory of Lent, Brown and Hackett (1994) to explore the factors influencing career interests of learners in accounting as a career path. A quantitative research approach with a survey questionnaire, framed within a positivist paradigm, was used to elicit opinions from learners. The findings revealed that work satisfaction, earnings potential, self-efficacy, personal interest, offering Accounting as a subject and having an accountant in the family are among the factors that significantly influenced participating learners’ career interests in accounting

Abstract:
The school evaluation, in particular its external evaluation, has been the object of a profound reflection, for one believes that it encourages and consolidates the process of self-evaluation, thus raising the chances of improvement of the School. The aim of this report is to identify the role of the external evaluation in the improvement of a school, how it prompts the school to adopt actions and processes of change, in order to overcome its constraints and week points. This study, which was done in a school, began with the results available in the report of the external evaluation of the school, stemming from the External Evaluation and Schools Program (AEE in Portuguese) carried out by the Education and Science General Inspection (IGEC in Portuguese). It was based on the analysis of documents which define the educational action, and its aim is to analyze the impact of the AEE between two evaluation cycles. Its goals are, on the one hand, to know the implications the AEE had in the performances and outcomes of the school, and, on the other hand, to see if the AEE is itself a useful instrument for the school, if it stimulates the regulation of the educational action. The outcomes happened to be in favor of the goals of the IGEC, since, although it was still visible that some aspects did not really improve, the external evaluation process clearly encouraged the task of the self-evaluation of the school, and became an opportunity to improve not only the organizational development, but also the quality of learning, the academic performance of the students, and the collaborative works of the several actors that give rise to a school.

As far as the career planning of TV news professionals, what can news reporters, video journalists, and members of news production staff do when they want to pursue another career path? Career planning of these TV news professionals is a topic which is worthy of further research and discussions. This study adopted in-depth interviews with several TV news professionals to learn about their career development stages about past, present, and future. By interview data analyzing can we further understand their career preparation thoroughly. Through exploring the past career experiences and the current career situations, we will understand the planning and development of news professionals' when it comes to future careers. The research results are as followed: 1. The working experiences of news professionals are not entirely TV-related, but most of them work in the related fields. Besides, the education background of non-news related does not have any impact if they choose to work in TV industry. 2. There is almost no so-called vocational training for news professionals in their past careers, only a certain degree of "apprenticeship." 3. Salary will affect the past career planning of news professionals. To pursue a better salary, "job hopping" has become a shortcut for news professionals to get raise in their past career experiences. 4. News professionals' current career situations vary from the contents of the job and the different tasks, reflecting the problems encountered in individual careers. 5. "Video journalists" generally feel that the current workplace atmosphere is not good, and it affects their careers. 6. News professionals are generally dissatisfied with the current salary and think there is room for salary adjustment. 7. In the current career experience of news professionals, some are more willing to transform their career roles in their current jobs while others are unwilling to transform and prefer to stay the status quo. 8. In the face of the current situation after the merger of the company, they are more willing to adapt to the idea of "employee turnover", which has an impact on the current career of news professionals. 9. News professionals have a low willingness to pursue self-education in their current career. 10. News professionals generally choose to stay in their current jobs when it comes to career planning. However, the dream of choosing other occupation has never faded. 11. Most of the news professionals do not have the willingness to change jobs or have no idea about future career planning. 12. If you ask news professionals about their retirement, there is a high percentage of ignorance or unwillingness to think about.
