Kerry, Matthew James. "Person and professional program determinants of health provider student attitudes toward inter-professional teamwork." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/45745.

Full text
Abstract:
Health provider student characteristics and professional program were evaluated as predictors of attitudes toward inter-professional (IP) teams. Sixteen months after completing a self-report battery of demographic and non-ability trait measures, participants completed a second survey (N = 213), assessing components of attitudes toward IP teams. Non-ability traits showed comparable within-program predictive validities for affective reactions toward IP behavior. Additionally, results indicated the incremental predictive validity of trait Dominance and Motivational Inter-professional Team Intelligence, over professional program, for IP attitudes and affective reactions toward IP behavior, respectively. The independent, relative, and joint roles of non-ability individual differences and professional program as determinants of IP training outcomes are discussed.

Abstract:
Background: Mental illness is seen as a definition of many terms. In recent years, mental health problems has been increasing among the Swedish population. One disease that increased significantly and contributed to illness is burnout professional. Burnout professional mainly affects people who work with, or are responsible for other people and has ultimately proven to contribute to physical and mental illness. The result of the mental and physical illness can be a contributing factor to the long-term sick leave that has increased in today's society. Aim: The aim of this study is to describe people's experiences and strategies of living with burnout professional and to describe the study sample in the included articles. Method: The present study is a descriptive literature review based on 12 scientific articles with qualitative approach. The basis for the study was retrieved through searches of databases Cinahl and PsycINFO. Main Results: The results showed a repeating pattern of people with burnout professional experiencing physical and psychological trouble. These troubles are related to bodily signals and symptoms that affect people's health and contribute to negative emotional experiences where the self-image and sociability suffer. During the recovery people felt joy and motivation again. Several coping strategies are described as useful in the treatment of burnout professional. All studies reported participants, the sex of the participants, the majority of the studies reported age and profession. Conclusion: By people with burnout professional describing their own stories about their experiences and the management of burnout professional, could the aim of this study be answered. The experiences meant physical symptoms and signals and emotional experiences, but also positive experiences like joy. There are different coping strategies that can be used in the management of burnout professional. Through further research of experiences and management of burnout professional, it can gain a better understanding of how people feel and their illness. Through this, care and treatment can be improved.

Abstract:
This thesis focused on the situation of family members of persons with psychotic illness, particular on their experience of the approach of the healthcare professionals and of their feelings of alienation regarding the professional care of their family member. A further aim was to explore how siblings who have participated in a support group for siblings experienced their situation. A questionnaire was developed that enabled the aims of this thesis to be investigated (I). Seventy family members from various parts of Sweden participated, and data were collected via the questionnaire developed in study I (II-III). Thirteen siblings who previously had participated in a support group participated in follow-up focus groups interviews (IV). The questionnaire developed was shown to be reliable and valid in these studies (I). In many cases, the participants had experienced an approach from professionals that indicated that they did not experience openness, confirmation and cooperation, and that they felt powerless and socially isolated in relation to the care. There was also found to be a certain degree of association between how the participants experienced the approach and whether they felt alienation (II). The majority of the participants considered openness, confirmation, and cooperation to be important aspects of professional’s approach. The result also identified a low level of agreement between the participants’ experience and what they considered to be significant in the professional’s approach (III). The findings revealed the complexity of being a sibling of an individual with psychotic illness. Participating in a support group for siblings can be of importance in gaining knowledge and minimizing feelings of being alone (IV). Although the psychiatric care services in Sweden have been aware of the importance of cooperating with family members, the results indicated that there is a need for further research in this area.

Jeong, Kiseong. "Aspiration for sanctuary and potential alternatives : new housing environment for young professional single person households in Seoul." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2017. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/7610/.

Full text
Abstract:
The number of single person households in global cities such as London and New York has increased dramatically since the 1990s, with significant impacts for development patterns in these cities. The trend has been particularly prominent in South Korea's capital, Seoul, where whose 854,606 single person households represent 23.9% of total households as of 2010 and even more now in 2015. The increase has been mainly driven by the significant increases in young single households aged in their 20s and 30s. The government has been striving to keep pace with the rapid increases in the single person households by supplying residential dwelling types for them such as 'Urban Lifestyle Housing'. However, initial commentary highlights that the resulting housing environment exhibits numerous shortcomings. In this context, there is a need for research to understand the nature of the city living experience for young single person households, their aspirations and the implications for future design and planning approaches in the city. This research aims to address this gap and to provide a basis for recommending potential alternatives in the development and design of new housing for Seoul's changing population, approaching the issue with three perspectives: 'Human relationships', 'Housing design', and 'Economic issues'.

Abstract:
Statistically speaking, only between 4% and 6% individuals can afford to retire comfortably. When this fact is combined with changes such as a longer life expectancy, disintegration of family life and increasing pressure on public resources to deal with issues such as aids, the increasing need for personal financial planning for retirement becomes clear. Firstly, a framework was set of requirements which need to be met with regard to financial planning for retirement. This includes the need to diversify the portfolio (as a method to manage the acceptable risk level), as well as principles and techniques relating to diversification. The possibility of using the services of a financial planner to aid with the retirement planning, as well as aspects to be considered in this regard were discussed. It was also demonstrated that a variety of aspects should be considered when deciding on an investment, including market expectations, general economic conditions and the investor's own research, all within a long-term framework. The final aspect considered as part of the framework, was tax. Having set the framework for successful financial retirement planning in Chapter two, a number of pitfalls to be avoided were addressed in Chapter three. These included the investor's planned annual cost of living, since this is the single most important factor which will determine standard of living during retirement. The planned age at which the individual wishes to retire specifically also needs to be taken into account, seeing that this determines the amount of time he has to build up his investment. The planned rate of return on the investment has to be realistic, but also has to at least keep up with inflation. The effect of inflation could also for example mean that adequate present planning may fall short in 20 years' time. A final aspect to be considered is the importance of taking unforeseen events, such as a potential medical disability, into account. Having set the framework of factors to be taken into account, specific investment options were addressed in the main categories of equity, bonds, property and cash, as well as a pension find, provident fund and/or retirement annuity. Less traditional options such as collector's items, financial instruments or the option to start one's own business were also addressed in more detail. Finally, a questionnaire was addressed to professional people, as represented by auditors in the Northwest Province, with the view to determine the current level of retirement planning and whether or not their expectations matched the theoretic framework as discussed in the previous chapters. Suggestions were made as per the results of the questionnaire by linking the results of the questionnaire and the theoretical framework. Gaps were also highlighted, for instance that very few people as per the sample plan to fully retire, and this changing understanding of "retirement" is not fully captured by current literature. It also seems that professional persons, as per the questionnaire, have an over optimistic view regarding their retirement and funds needed during retirement.

Abstract:
Because of the growing prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), there is an increased need for effective professional training models for autism treatment and education. Individuals with ASD receive care and therapy across multiple disciplines, so such training models should also be interdisciplinary in nature. In the medical field, pediatricians, nurses, psychiatrists, and many others work with individuals with ASD. In the education field, teachers, speech language pathologists, school psychologists, and others work with children with ASD. Some therapists work in both systems. Thus far, there has been little research done considering training delivery models (i.e., in-person and online training) in interdisciplinary best practices in ASD. This study examined outcomes of both an in-person delivery of an interdisciplinary, professional continuing education workshop and online (remote) delivery of the same content. We looked at preferred delivery methods, social validity, and dissemination of information related to each training format according to profession, experience, and levels of previous training. Results indicate that a one-day interdisciplinary training program can result in 70% of participants self-reporting changes in practice and at least 60% report they feel more confident working with children who have ASD. Participants also reported an increased rate of referrals for services outside of their own discipline and increased interest in training in ASD best practices (91% interested at follow up). The social validity of the training was very high with 91% agreeing that the training was worth their time.

Full text
Abstract:
Background Type 2 diabetes demands self-management over time, to maintain health and reduce the risk for diabetes complications. However, despite efforts, many persons with type 2 diabetes are not reaching the treatment targets. In diabetes, person-centred care and group education are recommended. Diabetes specialist nurses (DSNs) working in primary healthcare have an important role in supporting patients with type 2 diabetes in their self-management to adapt to the demands of the disease in everyday life. Therefore, it is important to explore the DSNs’ professional role and their experiences of practising person-centred care. The overall aim of the thesis was to explore the professional role of DSNs in primary healthcare, and to describe their experiences of person-centred diabetes care. Methods The thesis includes three studies with qualitative, and one with a quantitative, approach. Data collection consisted of focus group interviews, individual interviews, observations, and questionnaires. Qualitative content analysis and statistics were used in the analysis. In studies I and II, 29 and 31 DSNs participated, respectively. In study III, 10 DSNs and 44 persons with type 2 diabetes participated. Lastly, in study IV, 10 DSNs participated. Results The results in the thesis showed that DSNs have a complex and multifaceted professional role that entails striving to be an expert, a fosterer, a leader, an executive, and a role model, which they found challenging. The DSNs perceived high job demands, such as decision-making and learning. The thesis also showed that the interaction between DSNs and persons with type 2 diabetes shifted from empowerment to authority struggles during group support sessions based on person-centred care. The experience of person-centred care was described as enriching, but DSNs also expressed ambivalence, related to an altered professional role. Conclusion There is a desire by DSNs to be close to persons with type 2 diabetes, although they have several challenges to fulfil, which makes it difficult to uphold a relation with proximity; thus, distance is also present. Even though person-centred care is recommended in healthcare, and despite DSNs’ efforts to practise PCC, the result of this thesis shows that it also implies an altered professional role for DSNs that has to be addressed.

Abstract:
Patients in psychiatric care experience a need for and expect to develop interpersonal relationships with professional caregivers and to be respected and listened to. Despite demands for care to be person-centred and recovery-oriented, patients experience that psychiatric inpatient care fails to meet their expectations. Nursing research suggest that nurses aspire to engage with and meet the needs of patients, but that the strenuous reality of inpatient care prevents them from doing so. Exploring the content and context of psychiatric inpatient care from the perspective of professional caregivers might provide valuable insights regarding what caregivers do, and more importantly it can aid in understanding why they do what they do.This thesis aimed to explore the content and context of adult psychiatric inpatient care from the perspective of professional caregivers. This was achieved by clarifying the concept of person-centred care in the context of inpatient psychiatry, describing staff members’ reasoning on their choice of action and perceptions of interprofessional collaboration in challenging situations in inpatient psychiatric care settings, and exploring nurses’ experiences of good nursing practice in the specific context of inpatient psychiatry. A systematic review of the literature identified 34 scholarly papers that were analysed using evolutionary concept analysis. Focus group interviews were conducted with 26 professional caregivers and analysed using qualitative content analysis. Individual qualitative interviews were conducted with 12 skilled, relationship-oriented nurses and analysed using an interpretive descriptive approach to qualitative analysis.Reviewing the literature on person-centred care in inpatient psychiatry clarified how person-centred care is expected to result in quality care when interpersonal relationships are used to promote recovery. Professional caregivers’ reasoning on choice of action described different concerns in caregiver-patient interaction resulting in a focus on either meeting patients’ individual needs or solving staff members’ own problems. Describing professional caregivers’ perceptions of interprofessional collaboration suggested that they are being constrained by difficulties in collaborating with each other and a lack of interaction with patients. Exploring nurses’ experiences of good nursing practice revealed how circumstances in the clinical setting affect nurses’ ability to work through relationships. It is argued that these findings describe the workings of two opposing forces in psychiatric inpatient care. The concept of caring as a process forms the basis for discussing the content of care as a moral endeavour in which nurses strive to do good. The concept of demoralizing organizational processes is used to discuss the context of care as demoralizing and allowing for immoral actions. The main conclusions to be drawn are that, from a nursing perspective, nurses in psychiatric inpatient care need to focus on patients’ experiences and needs. For this they need sufficient resources and time to be present and develop relationships with patients.Nurses in psychiatric inpatient care also need to take personal responsibility for their professional practice. Attempts to transform psychiatric care in a person-centred direction must consider all of these aspects and their interrelatedness. Further research on psychiatric inpatient care is needed to understand more about how the content of care relates to the context of care.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Introduction:Nurses’ continuing professional development (CPD) can be understood as part of life-long learning in working life. CPD shows positive effects on nurses’ work satisfaction, on their wish to contribute to their workplace and in reducing work-related stress. In addition, CPD has positive effects on patient care. The nurse manager is the closest manager of the nurse on inpatient wards and has a crucial impact on nurses’ CPD by acting as a role model and creating a learning environment on the ward. How nurse managers understand the meaning of nurses’ CPD affects how they act and interact with nurses on the ward.  Purpose: To describe how nurse managers in inpatient care understand the meaning of CPD for nurses on hospital wards. Method: A phenomenographic interview study was conducted and 12 nurse managers were interviewed. Results: Three qualitatively different perceptions, of varying complexity, were found. A) CPD is when the working group reaches the basic level of knowledge necessary to do their work, B) CPD is the nurses’ awareness, acceptance and insightand C) CPD means to use the nurses’ prerequisites and competence within the organization. Conclusion:These perceptions are connected with how the nurse managers view their role in CPD and which learning activities for CPD are their main priority. Their different perceptions can affect and be affected by the situation on the ward where the nurse manager works. Their perception also affects their ambition and responsibility when it comes to nurses’ professional development. Despite their job description, few nurse managers highlighted their own impact on nurse CPD. This may lead to the nurse standing alone when seeking ways to achieve development. There is a risk that individual nurses’ competences may not be used within their organization.

Abstract:
The focus of this thesis was to explore educational professionals' everyday experience of English educational policies; narrowing its focus to policy which promotes an inclusion agenda. The findings are presented in three sections with the first two papers prepared in accordance with the author guidelines of the journals proposed for submission. The first paper offers a review of literature which represents teacher relationship (see Braun, Maguire and Ball, 2010; Fullan, 2006; Luttenberg, Imants and van Veen, 2013; Luttenberg, van Veen and Imants, 2013; Wexler, 2002) with English educational policies. Teacher perspectives illustrate how the implementation and practice of policy heavily guides practice, both in terms of pedagogy and content, and detail the difficulties teachers have in establishing professional identity whilst trying to accommodate policy into practice. It is suggested that in order for teachers to adopt new educational policies they need to be able to take some ownership of both the policies themselves and of their own professional development; but most importantly, that they need the space to engage in dialogue around their practice to do this. The first paper provided a frame for the second by offering a description of the current climate teachers find themselves in and by discussing what might be needed to bring about the professional development necessary to embed policy into practice. The second paper then presents a description of a collaborative action research project within an English high school; a group of educational psychology, teaching, support and pastoral professionals worked collaboratively to develop person-centred practice through their engagement in an inquiry group. The inquiry group engaged in dialogue around practice; exploring their own personal and professional values as well as the values embedded within person-centred practice. This paper offers an account of the inquiry group's journey, highlighting key themes as identified by the group: ownership of, and confidence in, the learning process; developing reflective practice; and the challenge of engaging others in the learning process. The findings suggest that an action research approach can facilitate the learning and development necessary to embody collaborative person-centred practice. The third paper then offers a critical appraisal of the role that educational psychology can have in disseminating findings and promoting teacher development; in particular through the facilitation of collaborative action research within the school context.

Abstract:
Portuguese State acknowledges disabled person rights to employment access, the same way as it does for non-disabled persons. Nonetheless, hiring a disabled person is still not an easy task for the employer. Through the right public policies, the State role is essential helping the society to understand what it means to be a disabled person and how can those people find a job and be productive. This study emphases on Medidas CEI/CEI+ ‘Contrato Emprego Inserção e Contrato Emprego Inserção +’ analyzing in a qualitative approach - applied in the Lisboa e Vale do Tejo region - and analyses the standpoint of 3 stakeholders: 16 Beneficiaries (disabled persons); 9 Promoting entities; 7 Non-profit Organizations that work with disabled persons on their professional development. Main goal is to understand if the applied measures are matching their expectations, what have improved and what are the main limitations. It is possible to understand both stakeholders share the same point when saying ‘Medidas’ are planned for short-term results and consequently do not ensure an effective employment. Despite of this, and understanding the current job seeking and working context for disabled persons, all of them also agree that these measures have a positive impact on the beneficiaries’ life, even if only during a short period. As regards final considerations, a political analysis is then needed and should consider: less bureaucracy; continuity and alternatives to the Medidas CEI/CEI+; reinforce the monitoring done by the IEFP I.P.; revise the amount of the monthly grant to level the National Minimum Wage; reassess what are “socially useful work initiatives”; strengthen the awareness raised by the IEFP, I. P. in public and private organizations, in order to facilitate the process of hiring a disabled person.

Abstract:
The present investigation is a qualitative study of the doctor-patient relationship in pediatrics, specifically of the relationship between pediatrician and children with congenital anomalies and their families. The study is based on the author’s experience in special schools as a pediatrician. The basic assumption of this study is that the physician has difficulty in relating to these patients and their families due to his “disabled” medical training. The objectives of the study were: 1) to identify the feelings and attitudes of the pediatrician in his relationship with children with congenital anomalies and their relatives, and 2) to identify the difficulties experienced by the pediatrician in relating to this families. The methodology used was a “variant of qualitative research” which explores the concept of social representations according to the most important currents of thought in the health area, allied to the psychodrama method for data collection and analysis. Ten pediatricians were interviewed using a nonstructured questionnaire. The interviews were recorded on tape and data analysis demonstrated the “disablement” of medical training in terms of teaching about the doctor-patient relationship. In addition, the author proposes the thesis that this difficulty is linked to the image of omnipotence both of the doctor and of other health professionals, created by their university education. With respect to medical practice, intense activity was identified in terms of number of work hours per day, which impairs continuing formal and informal education, the reflection about this practice and the attention given to each patient, characterizing what we call “activism”. It was also possible to perceive differences in the doctor-patient relationship in terms of the social class of the patient. Feelings of emotional shock, depression and impotence were detected in physicians facing these disablements, with emphasis on the anxiety they feel when they must talk to the parents about the disablement of their children. As to the specific time when the news should be broken to parents about the birth of a baby with a congenital anomaly, the practices identified are considered inadequate by most of those who study this subject. With the intention of “protecting the mother”, almost all the doctors interviewed revealed the practice of first disclosing the news to the father without the presence of the mother, whom they submit to sedation soon after delivery. Another practice identified was to create expectations about the health of the baby in order to “prepare” the mother and the other relatives to receive the news. Finally, the author suggests that medical education should start to involve the discussion of the relationship with the families of disabled children and the creation of multiprofessional teams in maternities and in Intensive Care Units in order to transmit information to the parents and relatives in cases of congenital anomalies or of serious health conditions involving the possibility of sequels or of infant death.

Abstract:
Aim: To describe nurses experiences of communicating with patients when they do not share the same language. Method: A literature review with an inductive approach based on twelve qualitative articles analysed with Friberg’s five-steps-model. Results: The analysis is presented in four main themes; a major challenge, interpreters that are both supportive and obstructive, problem-solving strategies and personal development. The nurses felt frustration because they could not give an individualized good healthcare because of the language barrier. They valued the interpreters, but some nurses used the patients relatives to interpret. Non-verbal communication was seen as a good strategy to enable simple conversations. The nurses desired to understand the patients and strived to get increased competence about different cultures. Conclusion: Nurses experienced a major challenge to communicate when there is no common language. There are insufficient guidelines about how to use interpreters. Nurses experienced a lack of competence when they communicated with people who speak another language. In person-centered care the patient should be involved in his or hers care and the nurse need to have knowledge about their individual needs and values. Further research is necessary about education or tools that nurses can use to overcome language barriers.

Abstract:
This thesis adduces the benefits in teaching undergraduate theatre majors the competency to create a cabaret. It expostulates that doing so during college gives students an advantage in marketing themselves professionally. It substantiates the general lack of cohesive undergraduate training in this area. The results of a survey of casting directors, assessing the worth of implementing the study of cabaret into theatre curricula, are incorporated. Those that responded agreed that performing cabarets can play a role in a performer’s career, even if the opinions varied as to what that specific role is. There was general agreement that the study of cabaret could benefit students in ways which potentially go beyond securing immediate employment. I have included a sample syllabus for a course focusing on the construction, and performance of a cabaret. It is anticipated this would serve for a performance class taught during a student’s fourth year of undergraduate study.

In the contemporaneous world, the labor market is in constant transformation due to the inclusion of new technologies and forms of organization of the productive process, which demands from the worker the development of skills that will enable their permanence in the job before a competitive scenario. In the case of workers with disability, remain inserted in the labor market is even more difficult due to several factors, whether of social, economic and even cultural order, that’s why the qualification represents a fundamental weapon for this group, as a way to make effective their inclusion both professional and social. Given the above, the present dissertation aims to analyze the social contribution of professional qualification programs for people with disability in the city of Manaus, with emphasis on the preparing of this group for the labor market. It still has as specific objectives, understand the fundamental aspects of disability through concepts, terminologies and models; know the historical and social evolution of people with disability; understand the work world and labor laws, especially those governing the National Policy for the Integration of People with Disability; and verify, at the municipal level, the dynamics of the labor market and the working process of professional qualification programs for people with disability. For the research, were chosen two professional qualification programs developed in Manaus: the Curupira Project, from the Federal Institute of Education, Science and Technology of Amazon (IFAM), and the Program SENAI of Inclusive Actions, this one in period from 2012 to 2014. The research was based on quantitative and qualitative approach, of descriptive, bibliographical and documentary character, because were used theoretical references and internal documents related to the operation of the programs. The research method used was dialectical, because the aim was to understand the dynamics of the programs, from the relationship these establish with the other spheres of society. The field study was conducted through questionnaires, with the participation of students and coordinators, as well as documentary study in loco with the help of employees who work in the programs. The results allowed concluding that in some cases the programs' social contribution goes beyond offering the qualification for the job, as it contributes to the development of the autonomy and independence of the individual. In such cases, it was observed that the inclusion in the labor market is carried out effectively, bringing life improvements to these workers with disability.

Abstract:
Referring to the inclusion of people with disabilities in professionalizing courses, an approximation to the teaching actions is required, and how they are operationalized and have repercussions on the possibility of these people entering the labor market. Therefore, the Professional Education provided by different training institutions (governmental, non-governmental, "S" system, etc.) has been challenged facing these demands’ scenario, which impels to think about peculiarities such as, for example, the preparation of teachers of this modality, curriculum planning and the teaching activity undertaken in the courses. In this perspective, it is a general objective of the Thesis to analyze how the inclusion of students with disabilities in professionalizing courses at basic level has repercussions on the training of teachers of this modality and on the pedagogical practices developed in these courses. The Thesis is organized, methodologically, by the qualitative approach and the research method undertaken is the case study of the multiple-case type, with geographic clipping in the municipalities of Panambi and Frederico Westphalen, located in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The research involved the participation of five (05) Coordinators of institutions that are linked in the organization and promotion of basic level professional qualification courses; Four (04) teachers who teach classes in the courses and two (02) Labor Tax Auditors of Rio Grande do Sul. Interlocutors that aggregate in the production of knowledge of the investigated scenarios, through their implications in semi-structured interviews, questionnaires and email exchanges. The theoretical contributions are associated with the Historical-Cultural Theory, mainly in Vygotsky, and his studies of defectology. In addition, topics such as teacher training, Professional Education articulated to inclusive processes of people with disabilities, along theoretical subsidies of scholars like: Pimenta, Tardif, Nóvoa, Kuenzer, Manica, Baptista, Passerino, among other collaborations, are invested in. In the studied reality, the basic level professionalizing courses were predominantly associated to the Professional Learning Program. This course format, in the geographic context of the research, has been characterized by the significant presence of people with disabilities and as an alternative to access the Professional Education and, as a result, the possibility of the person with disabilities entering the labor market. The data show the need to get to know the Professional Education teacher, especially those who are at the forefront of the courses by the Professional Learning Program, which we associate with a heterogeneous professional identity with a partial dedication to teaching encouraged, also, by a new scenario that announces itself subjugated to the qualification to possess a "notorious knowledge". There is a differentiated rhythm between teacher training policies, lacking at this conjuncture, and the actions that are required for the area of people with disabilities’ labor inclusion. This aspect encourages reflection, because one of the main protagonists of the work to promote and make feasible the inclusive processes of professionalization of people with disabilities is this professional who learns to be a teacher in and with action. The research indicates that policies and actions for labor inclusion also need to be accompanied by continuous investments in the qualification of Professional Education teachers, as this area is not immune to the historical-cultural transformations of the present. This demand highlights the necessity for the knowledge and performance of the Special Education beyond the inclusive processes in the school context as well as in the labor market due to the Professional Education bias.

What kind of science teacher of Basic Education would make a student wonders to be a scientist? How have learned science on Basic Education a person that now produces Science. To answer those questions, it was investigated how much and in which way the practice of science teachers of Basic Education had influenced scientists on their professional option. Questionnaires were applied and interviews with scientists currently working on Natural Sciences were taped with the purpose to identify which factors they considered decisive and remarkable on their school trajectory as science students. Any kind of influence of the teachers on the professional option of the scientists was highlighted. The evocation of the memories of these scientists was done trying to detect the importance of their science teachers. Which are the characteristics that make them good teachers on the field? What scientists think about the formation of science teachers? These reports gave clues hinting how some of the interviewees had decided to be scientists on the Natural Sciences field because of or in spite of their science teachers, as well as the influence of other factors in their career option. One expects thus, that this work can bring new subsidies to the field of formation and practices of Science teachers.

Abstract:
Medication management constitutes a large part of registered nurses' (RNs) daily work in municipal elderly care. They are responsible for monitoring multimorbid older persons with extensive treatments, and they often work alone, without daily access to physicians. RNs’ drug monitoring is, in this thesis, based on the concept of pharmacovigilance. Pharmacovigilance is about the science and the activities that aim to improve patient care and safety in drug use, that is, to detect, assess, understand and prevent drug-related problems. The overall aim was to explore conditions for pharmacovigilance from a nursing perspective, focusing on implications of RNs’ competence and use of a computerized decision support system (CDSS). Both quantitative and qualitative research methods were used, including a questionnaire (I), focus group discussions (II), individual interviews (III) and an intervention study (IV). In total 216 RNs and 54 older persons participated from 13 special accommodations, located in three different regions. RNs who had completed further training in pharmacovigilance rated their medication competence higher than those who had not. However, there was no difference between groups in the number of pharmacovigilant activities they performed in clinical practice (I). The RNs appeared to act as “vigilant intermediaries” in drug treatment. They depended on the nursing staff's observations of drug-related problems. The RNs continuously controlled the work of staff and physicians, and attempted to compensate for shortcomings in competence, accessibility and continuity (II). RNs’ use of a CDSS was found to affect drug monitoring, including aspects of time, responsibility, standardization of the work, as well as access to knowledge and opportunities for evidence-based care (III). The CDSS detected significantly more drug-related problems when conducting medication reviews, than the RNs did. Nevertheless, this did not result in any significant improvement in the quality of drug use in the follow up, three and six months later (IV). This thesis contributes to the recognition of pharmacovigilance from a nursing perspective. Increased medication competence seems to be insufficient to generate pharmacovigilant activities. RNs depend on other health care professionals and organizational conditions in order to perform their work. A CDSS has the potential to support RNs, both in structured medication reviews and in daily clinical practice. Inter-professional collaboration is crucial, with or without a CDSS, and the entire team needs to be aware of and take responsibility. Other important conditions is the existence of well-functioning communication channels, competence across the team, and established procedures based on current guidelines.

Background: During a surgical procedure, the patient is often anesthetized and covered with draping material. The operating theatre nurse has expertise regarding the care of the patient in connection to surgical procedures. In the technological environment, the operating theatre nurse's work is focused on the surgical wound, during the operation. In this situation, there is a risk that the view of the patient will change from being a person into an object, and will not be seen as a human being. Objective:This study aims to investigate the operating theatre nurse’s attitude towards the whole picture of the human being during the work in the surgical wound. Method: The study was conducted with a qualitative interview method with an inductive approach, and eleven operating theatre nurses from two different hospitals in southern Sweden were interviewed with semi-structured interview questions. The data material was analyzed with latent content analysis in accordance with Erlingsson and Brysiewicz (2017). Result: The recurring theme in the result was See the human being beneath the draping. The operating theatre nurses described that careful preparation and trust in colleagues were a prerequisite in performing their work in the surgical wound. They were constantly alert to changes around the patient, and guarded the patient and the exposed body during the operation. Even during the work in the surgical wound, the operating theatre nurses were aware of the patient who was beneath the draping and the focus in the surgical wound was due to the concern of the patient, and the best surgical result. Conclusion: The operating theatre nurses are constantly aware of the whole person when they focus during the work in the surgical wound. Their patient focus is to do what is best for the patient. Even in situations when attention must be paid to the work in the wound, it is always due to the concern of the patient and gives a positive image of the profession of the operating theatre nurse.

Abstract:
Darbe atlikta teorinė neįgaliųjų profesinės reabilitacijos specialisto profesinės kompetencijos apibrėžties analizė. Iškelta hipotezė, kad neįgaliųjų profesinės reabilitacijos specialisto profesinė kompetencija yra daugiamatis konstruktas, kurio turinys grįstas trimis lygiais: konceptualiuoju (žinios, asmeninės savybės, nuostatos), instrumentiniu (gebėjimai ir vaidmenys) bei integraciniu (funkcijos ir socialinis veiklos tinklas). Siekiant identifikuoti neįgaliųjų profesinės reabilitacijos specialisto profesinės kompetencijos struktūrą buvo: a) išanalizuoti 5 užsienio šalies (JAV) neįgaliųjų profesinės reabilitacijos specialistų pareigybiniai veiklos aprašai, išskiriant profesinės kompetencijos struktūrines dalis (taikant kokybinį tyrimą – dokumentų analizę); b) atskleistas neįgalių asmenų (N=5) požiūris į profesinės reabilitacijos specialisto profesinę kompetenciją (taikant kokybinius tyrimus – pusiau struktūruotą interviu ir diskurso analizę); c) nustatyti neįgaliųjų profesinės reabilitacijos specialisto profesinės kompetencijos struktūrinių dalių ypatumai, remiantis specialistų (N=135), dirbančių neįgaliųjų profesinės reabilitacijos sistemoje požiūriu (taikant kiekybinį tyrimą – anketinę apklausą). Svarbiausios empirinio tyrimo išvados: 1. Atlikus teorinę analizę buvo atskleista neįgaliųjų profesinės reabilitacijos specialisto profesinės kompetencijos struktūra, kurią sudaro trys lygiai: konceptualusis, instrumentinis bei integracinis. 2. Remiantis atliktu tyrimu... [toliau žr. visą tekstą]

Abstract:
Studien resulterade i två teman.
Background: Millions of people are yearly diagnosed with a cancer disease. The cells in the body can for different reasons mutate and become tumours. If the tumour is determined as bad it’s considered cancerous. The responsible physician takes a stand if the cancer disease is treatable or if the treatment should be palliative. The palliative care should be shaped from the terms set by the patient. The patient ought to receive care from healthcare staff, where they respect the individual and treat them in a kind manner, so called person centered care. The patient is to be encouraged to have the freedom to control their own life, the right to information, preserve their integrity and receive adequate alleviation of symptoms.   Aim: A literature review over how patients with a cancer disease experience the encounters with healthcare professionals in inpatient palliative wards. Method: The databases CINAHL Complete and MEDLINE with Full text were used for information retrieval. The retrieved information was audited and approved by both authors. Results: The results highlight patient experiences of the professional-patient relation. The study resulted in two themes. The first theme: Healthcare Professional’s approachment with two subtopics: Presence and commitment and trust and respect. The second theme: Communication and information, without subtopics. Discussion: The results were discussed on the basis of Rosemarie Rizzo Parse's theory after the subjects trust and mistrust were identified. Patient experienced that involvement, honesty and benevolence were important. The experiences were discussed based on Parse's theory about Human Becoming and other literature.

Abstract:
Introduction: People who use drugs are particularly vulnerable patients within health care, due to stigmatization and poor attitudes from healthcare professionals. Poor treatment can cause negative consequences for the patient’s overall health. Aim: To explore factors affecting how patients with substance use disorder experience treatment from healthcare professionals. Method: Literature review of qualitative studies. Data is collected from databases PubMed, PsycInfo, Scopus, ScienceDirect and CINAHL. Result: A person centered approach has a positive effect on the experience of treatment. Stigmatization and lack of formal competence are factors contributing to a negative experience of treatment from healthcare professionals. Conclusion: The factors contributing to the experience of treatment from healthcare professionals are if person centered care is applied, if stigmatizing behaviors and attitudes are present, and the formal nursing education levels related to substance use disorders. Individuals with substance use disorders may experience that treatment received by healthcare professionals affect their decision to seek care. Improvement and extension of nurse’s education related to substance use disorder and treatment within health care should be a priority.

Nilsson, Anita.

Full text
Abstract:
Introduction: Older people with cognitive impairment such as dementia, delirium or depression, are commonly cared for in acute hospital wards. These older people may have specific needs associated with a cognitive impairment. However, literature indicates that the milieu, organisation and care processes in acute care not always support in meeting these needs. Aim: The overall aim of the thesis was to illuminate care of older people with cognitive impairment in hospital environments. Methods: The thesis consists of four studies. Study I used a cross-sectional design to explore staff attitudes toward older people with cognitive impairment, staff satisfaction with care and work and perceived person-centeredness of the ward (n=391). Study II used a Grounded theory design to explore barriers to person-centred care for older people with cognitive impairment at an acute medical ward. Study III used a cross-sectional design to explore the psychometric properties of the Swedish version person-centred care for older people with cognitive impairment scale (POPAC) in a sample of acute hospital staff (n=293). Study IV used a phenomenological hermeneutic design to explore the meanings of caring for older people with cognitive impairment in acute hospital wards as narrated by nursing staff (n=13). Results: Study I showed that participating staff estimated a neutral attitude to older people with cognitive impairment in the spectrum between negative and positive attitudes, and that factors such as being younger, a nurse assistant and experiencing the care of older people with cognitive impairment as burdensome, were associated with more negative attitudes. The results also showed that healthcare professionals felt that older patients' cognitive ability was rarely evaluated during hospitalisation, and that care were rarely based on evidence-based guidelines for care of older people with cognitive impairment. Study II illuminated that an organizational focus on medical needs, interventions and routines contributed to staff falling behind in relation to meeting these older patients' multidimensional needs, and that this could lead to signs of suffering for older patients, feelings of being excluded for relatives, and a frustration for staff. Study III supported a continued use of the POPAC scale for ratings of perceived prevalence of person-centred care processes for older people with cognitive impairment, but further studies was recommended to explore scale dimensionality. Study IV illuminated that the greater a gap that is experienced between what nurses can do (real) and what they want to do (ideal) in caring for older patients with cognitive impairment in acute care settings, the more meaningless care is experienced and the greater a threat is experienced to the nurses personal-professional integrity. The comprehensive understanding indicated that caring for older people with cognitive impairment in acute care settings means to provide nursing care in an environment that does not support the nurses’ possibilities to protect and develop their personal-professional integrity. Conclusions: A reasonable conclusion from these studies is that there may be reasons to further discuss and study how attitudes, perspectives, and goals for care, together with the content, procedures and interventions that can support or obstruct good nursing care for older people with cognitive impairment in hospital settings. There may also be reasons to explore how staff can be supported to provide person-centred care to these older patients, for example through guidelines for care of older people with cognitive impairment, standardised assessments of cognitive ability, and implementation of care processes that supports person-centred care. In addition, to further critically examine how organisational and environmental factors in hospital wards can support or obstruct person-centred care for older patients seems needed. There may also be a need to further develop conditions that can support nursing staff to maintain and develop their personal-professional integrity, by developing environments that provides further possibilities to provide good care for these older patients.

McDowell, Melissa. "African American Women Bloggers’ Lived Experiences with Digital Entrepreneurship: A Transcendental Phenomenological Study." ScholarWorks, 2020. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/7699.

Full text
Abstract:
The professionalization of blogs has elevated blogging to an organizational field whereby bloggers develop a legitimate career path. For many minority women bloggers, the transition from being traditionally employed to managing a one-person digital enterprise is often met with racial and gender imbalances created by nontraditional modes of work. The purpose of this qualitative transcendental phenomenological study was to gain a deeper understanding of how African American women bloggers described their lived experiences with managing a one-person digital enterprise and the implications of their racial and gender identity within this nontraditional mode of work. To address this gap, a transcendental phenomenological method was used to collect data from African American women bloggers. This study was framed by 3 key concepts focused on African American women bloggers: Brydges and Sj00F6holm’s concept of personal style blogger, Martinez Dy et al’s concept of women digital entrepreneurs, and Gabriel’s concept of Black female identity online. Data were gathered using 9 virtual semi-structured interviews and analyzed using the modified Van Kaam method. Eight themes emerged when answering the research question. The findings of the research showed that being an African American woman blogger means conducting entrepreneurial activity, working towards financial solvency, being proud of racial identity, and creating and delivering content as a blogger. Results gleaned from this transcendental phenomenological study may help promote social change by bringing awareness to policymakers on the issues of equity, access, and opportunity for marginalized populations who seek to become digital entrepreneurs.

Abstract:
The introduction of Education, Health and Care (EHC) plans proposed in the Children and Families Act 2014 has aimed to give parents and children who are going through the assessment process greater control and choice in decisions, and enhance the multi-professional collaboration between education, health services and social care. This research seeks to evaluate to what extent parents’, children and young people’s, and professionals' experiences correspond to these values at an early stage of implementation. The methodology of this thesis is based on a realistic evaluation framework informed by the work of Pawson and Tilley (1997). Realistic evaluation aims to construct a programme theory which links three distinct broad aspects of a programme: its context, mechanisms and outcomes (C-M-Os). This research employs a programme theory of how an EHC assessment is conducted and has been developed from the current literature on person-centred theory. Person-centred theory has been chosen because of its corresponding value base to the SEND reforms and the recommendation of its use in a number of government policy documents including the SEND Code of Practice (DfE, 2014). The programme theory has been used to devise questionnaires that have sought to gain professionals' experiences of the assessment process, particularly in relation to multi-agency working, and their perceptions of the person-centred nature of the assessment. In addition, five case studies have explored these issues in more depth to ascertain whether the EHC assessment process in this authority is meeting the core aims of the Children and Families Act 2014. Semi structured interviews and card sorting tasks were devised using the programme theory and conducted with a total of one child, five families and five professionals from five individual EHC assessments. This analysis goes beyond a description of the facilitating factors and barriers to person-centred support and examines how person-centred outcomes arise from specific contexts and mechanisms. Findings suggest that experiences of face-to-face multi-professional collaboration were positive within the EHC assessment group. Nevertheless, professionals expressed frustration that in some cases colleagues were not able to attend meetings due to time constraints, capacity within their services and the commissioning arrangements of their services. Parental and professional experiences of the process appear to be positive. The research demonstrates one case study where a person centred planning approach was utilised very successfully from the perspective of all involved. However, there are significant concerns raised in both phases of this study as to the way in which children and young people are provided with opportunities of contributing to their EHC assessment. The findings are relevant to the development of the EHC assessment process in the local authority (LA) in which I am employed, and will contribute to the debate about the role of educational psychologists (EPs) in evaluating this national policy.

In the present work we study the Professional Education Programs which are part of the Process of Professional Education and Placement in the Workplace (PECT) of the APAE of Toledo, Paraná, in the decade of 1990. We intend to apprehend the Professional Education programs based on the discourse of valorization of qualification for the formation of workers with autonomy, creativity, cooperation, responsibility, etc., once these qualities are imperative to the new methods of capitalist organization of production. In that sense, the exposition of this work contemplates, in the first chapter, a brief retrospective of the history of Special Education, aiming to demonstrate the begining of educational services to people with disabilities, highlighting the emergence of the Association of Parents and Friends of Exceptional Children (APAE) and, consequently, of the National Federation of APAEs (FENAPAES). In the second chapter, we present some considerations on the demands for the worker in the decade of 1990, as from the process of productive restructuring of the capital, situating, in this debate, the problematic of people with disabilities, as well as the legal bases of Brazilian Professional Education for the person with disability. As for the third chapter, we approach the PECT programs of the APAE of Toledo, Paraná, from the reconstitution of the institution‟s history. We found that since 1998, 2,198 students with disabilities have taken part in the PECT programs, and that until the end of 2010, 34 students were inserted in the labor market.

Abstract:

Sanders, Tammy S. "A Value-Driven Exploration of Online & In-Person Learning for Professionals." FIU Digital Commons, 2016. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3053.

Abstract:
The purpose of this dissertation is to undertake a learner-centered exploration of delivery mode relevance in professional learning. Given the increasing pervasiveness of technology-mediated online delivery in nondegree professional learning at the individual and enterprise levels, this study has a particular focus on learning value ascribed by learners to online and in-person delivery in relation to their professional development. Qualitative and quantitative methods were used in this study to collect and examine data from adult professionals in an effort to determine how value is ascribed to learning. With this aim in mind, this study focused on the following research questions: Are there differences in preferred learning format between men and women? Are there differences in preferred learning format between professionals in varied age groups? Are there differences in preferred learning format between professionals who have engaged in learning online and people who have not? For participants who indicate learning format preferences, how do they define and describe their preferences and on what aspects of the learning experience do they base their preferences? For participants who indicate learning format preferences, how are these participants describing and interpreting meaningful relevance for learning in their day-to-day professional lives? A key driver of this exploration was a scarcity of representative understanding in wider research about the relationship between varied modes of professional learning delivery and professional learning transfer, which has long typified learning value in the adult professional context. By exploring professionals’ learning experiences and delivery mode preferences, this study arrived at several explanatory concepts, to include: learning preference premiums as impactful value-drivers for learners; ubiquitous blend as a comprehensive value-based approach to professional learning design and delivery; and absolute proximity as a deliberate technology-mediated merging of work and learning contexts that supports professionals in achieving full applicability of their learning.

Read, Gary Frank Hoyland. "A qualitative study aimed at describing & interpreting the changing symbolic meanings of HIV/AIDS which encountering HIV-positive patients introduces into the personal & professional identities of selected health care professionals." Thesis, Rhodes University, 1993. http://hdl.handle.net/10962/d1002550.

Full text
Abstract:
This study aimed at describing and interpreting the changing symbolic meanings of the Acquired Immunodefiency Syndrome (AIDS) which encountering a Human Immunodefiency Virus (HIV)-positive patient introduced into the personal and professional identities of six health care professionals in a subregion of the Eastern Cape. With the exponential increase of HIV/AIDS in South Africa, medical practitioners have become increasingly exposed to HIV infected patients. This study has considered the psychological structures developed by practitioners in an attempt to control and understand their situation in the context of HIV/AIDS. In order to describe these psychological structures the existential phenomenological approaches of L. Binswanger (in Needleman, 1963), A. Giorgi (1975) and F.J.Wertz (1985) were employed. Through these procedures, the structure of the experience of encountering an HIV infected patient was elucidated. This comprised the first goal of this study. The second goal focused on interpreting these descriptions by way of the symbolic meanings and definitions implicit in the structure of this experience. For this latter purpose the approach of symbo1ic interactionism was used, in particu1ar the understandings outlined by H. Blumer (1969). This theory was seen as appropriate in that the encounter between the practitioner and patient was primarily located in interpersonal parameters. The findings were discussed in terms of the two dominant metaphorical frameworks used by the subjects to comprehend the disease - namely the perspectives of society and the biomedical model. These two frameworks were critically evaluated in the context of HIV/AIDS, the needs of HIV infected individuals as well as the needs of the general practitioner. The process of the encounter was found to be very significant for practitioners in terms of their conceptualisations of HIV/AIDS. Old understandings were reinterpreted within the interpersonal context and replaced with more appropriate symbolic metaphors upon which to base practise. This study has revealed these new understandings were limited and constrained with regard to understanding and treating HIV/AIDS in that the subjects were still influenced by the metaphors of the biomedical model. These constraints were examined in the light of both personal and professional meanings and identities. This study concluded by making suggestions for modification of the medical practitioner's role in the context of HIV/AIDS.

Sontyale, Ulungile Klaas. "Occupational stressors that influence professional health workers." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/1098.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Despite the prevalence of HIV/AIDS stabilizing and slightly decreasing in certain provinces, there are a number of People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHA) in South Africa. Many people seek help at primary health clinics and hospitals and receive chronic care at these facilities. Caring for these chronic patients and new patients entering the health system can be stressful to the health professionals who are involved. Many studies that have been conducted have focused on the clinical aspects of individual patients, while few studies have focused on the experiences and stressors of health professionals looking after PLWHA. To ensure quality of care for patients with HIV/AIDS, it is important to understand the experiences of health professionals looking after HIV/AIDS patients and how stressful experiences may influence their attitude towards these patients. Aim: The aim of this study is to report the factors health professionals perceive as occupational stressors caring for people living with HIV/AIDS in the public health sector of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality. Research design and Methodology: A quantitative, descriptive and non-experimental research design was followed. A pilot study was conducted to determine the clarity of questions, effectiveness of the instructions, completeness of the response sets, the time required to complete the questionnaires and the success of the data collection. The primary method of data collection was self-administered questionnaires. The questionnaires were dispatched to 30 health professionals at the public health facilities in the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality. A descriptive statistical analysis was done using a Statistical Package. This revealed the following findings. Findings: The following are the findings that were perceived to be occupational stressors: organizational factors, job design factors, career and promotional factors, role-related factors and cultural factors. iv Conclusion and recommendations: There are occupational stressors that affect health care professionals working in an HIV/AIDS setting. The following are the recommendations to rectify or to improve the situation: • Improve the communication of goals and objectives; • Redesign the job; • Human-resources development ; • Improvement of salaries; • Career planning and mentoring; and • Sensitisation of employees to cultural differences.

Abstract:
The Ph. D. thesis deepens the analysis of the notion known as "professionalism", in the various context where it can be found out, from the economic matter to the psychological science, with a particular focus on the meaning of the afore-mentioned notion from a law standpoint and the relevant relationship between "Professionalism"", work and training. It also handles the law perspective to "Professionalism" within the context of the employment contract and on the remedies against an unlawful use of the so called "ius variandi" set forth by article 2103 of the Italian Civil Code

They are often based on parameters from the field of art or from evaluating faces chosen by orthodontists or other professionals. The aims and objectives of the study were to determine the soft-tissue profile preference of a group of lay persons and professionals
to compare the preferences of the male and female assessors (lay persons group) with regard to the preferred profiles for the maleand female patient respectively
to test similarities and differences in the professional's perceptions of the various profiles. This qualitative study was undertaken at the orthodontic clinic at UWC using post-treatment soft tissue profile photographs of patients who had attended the orthodontic clinic..."

Warren, Jeremy James. "Constructions of meaning and personal identity in the decision-making of community safety professionals." Thesis, University of Chester, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10034/128966.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis takes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of the impact that constructions of meaning and personal identity have upon the processes of professional decision-making, in the delivery of community safety services. The research draws upon the previous work undertaken in the fields of psychology, sociology, social anthropology, criminology and community safety. The research was composed of five separate studies. Study one was a Delphi exercise to determine consensus of meaning for different community terms in common usage for policy makers, practitioners and academics. The research was able to define consensual meanings for ten of the thirteen terms presented, including crime prevention, crime reduction and community safety. Consensus was not achieved for the terms community engagement, respect and quality of life and suggestions are made which may account for this result. Study two utilised repertory grids to investigate the ways that community safety professionals might construe the decisions that they have to make as part of their duties. Studies three and four utilised bespoke ISA/lpseus instruments, whose structures were informed by the results from Study Two. These instruments were used to further explore the construals and worldviews of a variety of community safety professionals through six process postulates. It was found that whilst an individual's initial job role or gender did not have significant impact upon their professional decision-making, the training that they had received in community safety and the time that they had spent working in the field did have a significant impact upon their professional decision-making. It was also found that the groups of community safety professionals differed in their attitudes towards those members of society who are the target of community safety activity. Study five involved the generation and piloting of a survey instrument whose various sections were designed to validate the findings generated from the previous studies, as well as providing further data on the decision-making processes of those working within community safety. The final chapter presents the Warren Person Process Priority (WaPPP) layered model of decision-making that was derived from the data collected to inform the current thesis. The outer Person layer is defined by the four-way typology derived from the Procedural / Free-form and Cautious / Adventurous bi-polar constructs of identity types that were identified from the ISA/lpseus studies. The middle layer of the model describes a number of different decision-making processes that professionals may follow when making a judgement or coming to a conclusion. The order of the processes was given by the results of the survey pilot. The central portion of the model presents a number of factors that may impact upon professional decision-making, determined from the ethnographic work that informed the ISA/lpseus studies. The order of these factors was determined from the preparatory data collection instrument that was used with the ISA/lpseus studies and confirmed by the results of the survey pilot. Suggestions are made for further research that may expand upon the results presented in this thesis. These include a larger version of the Delphi, with an international panel of experts; correlation of the ISA/lpseus instruments with other validated instruments for the measurement of personality, identity and decision-making and an expansion of the survey pilot.

Johnson, Paige Whitney. "An Exploration of Names in Social and Professional Settings for Persons with Ethnically Identifying Names." FIU Digital Commons, 2018. https://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/3900.

Full text
Abstract:
The overarching purpose of this collected papers dissertation was to explore the perspectives and experiences related to names in social and professional settings for persons with ethnically identifying names. The first paper was an integrative literature review. The second paper was a qualitative study utilizing the phenomenological approach. Both studies utilized self-presentation theory, while Study #2 added social penetration theory and social identity theory. Self-presentation theory posits that people put forth a public face to show that they possess desirable characteristics to observers. Social penetration theory is centered on the concept of self-disclosure and the notion that people carefully construct their level of disclosure based on the interaction and how they wish it to proceed. Finally, social identity theory puts forth that people categorize others to determine with whom to align themselves and whom to exclude. These theories undergirded the studies and directed the inquiry. Study #1 reviewed literature to determine if names and self-presentation were studied within HRD. Only one study was found. The extant literature was largely quantitative, focused on job market reactions to applicant names, and assumed characteristics. Overall, the studies were focused on how best to present an applicant based on their name and the possible consequences of self-presentation in undesirable categories (e.g., minority applicants with “unique” or “ethnic” names). The literature indicated that applicants best presented when they utilized names that indicated non-minority ethnicity (e.g. White). Study #2 explored the opinions, experiences and behaviors of interview participants with ethnically identifying names related to social identity, self-presentation and social penetration. This study consisted of interviewing 15 people of either Asian, African, Caucasian or Latino/Hispanic ethnicity. Findings suggested that names did matter to the participants and that their behaviors and opinions related to their self-presentation and self-disclosure were colored by their experiences as someone with an ethnically identifying name; both professionally and socially. Overall, the findings of these studies are a starting point into the HRD literature to inform organizational research and practice. Additional research is needed to create a more comprehensive picture of the issues involved and work towards best practices and interventions.

Abstract:
This academic research focuses on the emergence of contemporary practices in the treatment of online news recently brought within the reach of non-professionals through the development of information and communication technologies, and grouped under the concept of citizen journalism. Two different but complementary approaches constitute the essential basis of this research study: The first approach is to examine the nature and identity of the profession of journalism, its weight and its limits, and its evolution after the emergence of the Web, as well as the arrival of new media technology and its confrontation with information and communication technologies. It also attempts to understand and analyze the essence, characteristics, dimensions and challenges of the uses of amateur journalism brought to the attention of everyone via digital technology. The second approach consists of a case study of citizen media in Persian. It includes several researches and analyses, such as: The sphere of journalism and the media environment in Iran; the way in which Internet is used and the rate of trust of internet-users vis-à-vis the source of online information from citizens; the manner in which Iranian professional journalism receives citizen journalism and ordinary people’s involvement in the current affairs; the priorities of the creators of citizen media, and their own methods of collecting, processing and publishing online information. This thesis also takes into account the limitations, restrictions and identified issues of this new journalism practice in relation to its practitioners

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis concerns the use of repertory grids to examine personal and professional development (PPD) during professional training programmes. Paper one consists of a systematic review of 11 repertory grid studies of people undergoing training in human services professions. The findings suggest that professional socialisation occurred in line with the aims of training programmes but was an idiosyncratic, non-linear process which continued post-qualification. Trainees' thinking style became more abstract, less polarised and more cognitively complex. Implications for people training in human services professions and training providers are discussed and suggestions for improved future research are provided. Paper two reports a repertory grid study examining 26 third-year trainee clinical psychologists' construal of their PPD. The findings suggest that trainees' personal and professional selves were construed to be similar to each other. Trainees reported feeling anxious, stressed, unsettled and lacking an appropriate work-life balance. These difficulties were attributed to the demands of training and were expected to resolve once training was completed. Suggestions for future research with improved methodology are made and the implications of the findings for trainees, training providers and employers of newly qualified clinical psychologists are given. Paper three provides a critical reflection of the thesis; discussing the strengths and limitations of each of the papers and concluding with the author's personal reflections on the process of the research and her own PPD.
