Abstract:
Two developmental pathways to sport excellence have been described: early specialization and early sampling (Côté, Lidor, & Hackfort, 2009). Despite a common assumption that early specialization (defined as playing one sport exclusively and intensely before age 12) is a necessary precursor to success at the collegiate or professional levels, research to support this assumption remains unclear. To add to this literature, the current study was a survey of 708 minor league professional baseball players on the ages at which they began to specialize in their sport. Results indicated that most players sampled a diversity of sports up through late adolescence. Only 25% of players specialized before the age of 12 and the mean age of specialization was 15 years. Furthermore, those who specialized later were more likely to receive college scholarships. Finally, we examined patterns of specialization as a function of athletes’ home climate and culture. At least in this sample of professional minor league baseball players, an early sampling pathway seems to have fortified success at both the collegiate and professional levels.

Abstract:
Background: Pediatric sports specialization, defined as intense year-round training in a single sport as a result of excluding other sports for more than 8 months per year, is common in the United States. There are demonstrated physical and social risks to early pediatric sports specialization (defined as before age 12 years). While thought to be needed to acquire appropriate experience and excel in a given sport, there remains little information on when athletes at the highest levels of their sport specialized. This study aimed to define when professional and collegiate ice hockey players specialized. Hypothesis: Early sports specialization before age 12 years will not be common among elite-level (professional and collegiate) ice hockey players. Study Design: Retrospective cross-sectional survey study. Level of Evidence: Level 3. Methods: Male professional and collegiate ice hockey players within 1 National Hockey League organization and 2 National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) organizations who were 18 years of age or older completed a survey at training camp detailing their history of sports participation and specialization. Results: A total of 91 athletes participated in the study (mean age, 22.8 years; range, 18-39 years). The mean age at the start of any sports participation was 4.5 years, and the mean age of sports specialization was 14.3 years. The mean age of specialization in the professional group, the NCAA Division I group, and the NCAA Division III group was 14.1, 14.5, and 14.6 years, respectively. Conclusion: Early pediatric sports specialization is not common in elite-level (professional and collegiate) ice hockey players. Clinical Relevance: Early pediatric sports specialization before age 12 years is not necessary for athletic success in professional and collegiate ice hockey. This study provides further evidence supporting the recommendations of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, American Academy of Pediatrics, and American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine against early sports specialization.

Abstract:
Background: An increasing number of youth baseball athletes are specializing in playing baseball at younger ages. Purpose: The purpose of our study was to describe the age and prevalence of single-sport specialization in a cohort of current professional baseball athletes. In addition, we sought to understand the trends surrounding single-sport specialization in professional baseball players raised within and outside the United States (US). Study Design: Cross-sectional study; Level of evidence, 3. Methods: A survey was distributed to male professional baseball athletes via individual team athletic trainers. Athletes were asked if and at what age they had chosen to specialize in playing baseball at the exclusion of other sports, and data were then collected pertaining to this decision. We analyzed the rate and age of specialization, the reasons for specialization, and the athlete’s perception of injuries related to specialization. Results: A total of 1673 professional baseball athletes completed the survey, representing 26 of the 30 Major League Baseball (MLB) organizations. Less than half (44.5%) of professional athletes specialized in playing a single sport during their childhood/adolescence. Those who reported specializing in their youth did so at a mean age of 14.09 ± 2.79 years. MLB players who grew up outside the US specialized at a significantly earlier age than MLB players native to the US (12.30 ± 3.07 vs 14.89 ± 2.24 years, respectively; P < .001). Additionally, MLB players raised in the US recalled a significantly higher incidence of sustaining an injury attributed to specializing in baseball than MLB athletes raised outside the US (27.7% vs 20.6%, respectively; P = .05). Conclusion: This study challenges the current trends toward early youth sport specialization, finding that the majority of professional baseball athletes studied did not specialize as youth and that those who did specialize did so at a mean age of 14 years. With the potential cumulative effects of pitching and overhead throwing on an athlete’s arm, the trend identified in this study toward earlier specialization within baseball is concerning.

Abstract:

In this quantitative, predictive study, the author aimed to evaluate whether a predictive relationship exists between auditors’ experience and specialization and auditors’ levels of professional skepticism, as measured by the professional skepticism scale developed by R. Kathy Hurtt. While there has been growing focus on professional skepticism in the field of accounting, a gap existed in research analyzing the influences of years of experience and industry specialization on professional skepticism. Because of this identified gap, one research question was derived from the literature: To what extent do years of experience and industry specialization status of auditors explain the variation in level of professional skepticism? Quantitative, nonexperimental, exploratory research methodology was employed to study the predictive relationship between professional skepticism, years of experience and industry specialization. The sample of the study included 68 adults employed as accountants or auditors belonging to the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners source through Qualtrics. The results of the multiple regression model showed that overall auditors’ years of experience did not statistically significantly explain the variation in the level of professional skepticism. However, having years of experience of 11 to 15 years as an auditor had a significant negative predictive relationship on their professional skepticism. The multiple regression model also indicated that overall auditors’ industry specialization status did not statistically significantly explain the variation in the level of professional skepticism. The results of this study, while only yielding one outstanding statistically significant relationship, created numerous opportunities for further research.

Marino, Reshelle C. "The Influence of Specialization-Specific Supervision on School Counselors’ Perceptions of Preparedness, Professional Identity, and Perceived Supervisor Effectiveness." ScholarWorks@UNO, 2011. http://scholarworks.uno.edu/td/1413.

Abstract:
Despite the vast array of research evidence supporting supervision as a necessary component of the professional identity development of counselors, many counselors in training do not receive adequate supervision (Cashwell & Dooley, 2001). The school counseling profession has continued to struggle with the development of a widely recognized and consistent professional identity (Herlihy, Gray, & McCollum, 2002). Although there are many supervision models provided in the counseling literature (Bernard & Goodyear, 2008), there are not any consistently agreed-upon supervision models specific to the training of school counselors. The purpose of this research was to evaluate school counselors’ perceptions of their preparedness, professional identity, and perceived supervisor effectiveness related to specialization-specific supervision (SSS). School counselors from ASCA’s southern region were asked to respond to the Specialization-Specific Supervision Questionnaire (SSSQ). The findings of this study demonstrated that school counselors who received specialization-specific supervision felt better prepared to begin an entry-level school counseling position, had a stronger sense of their professional identity, and expressed feeling more positive regarding their perceptions of supervisor effectiveness than school counselors who did not receive specialization-specific supervision. These results support the conclusions of previous research, which indicated that supervision serves the following purposes: varies from discipline to discipline (Campbell, 2000); is a vital component of school counselor training (Bernard & Goodyear, 2008); is a conduit for professional identity development (Dollarhide & Miller, 2006); and is a contributing factor to the overall supervisory experience (Lazovsky & Shimon, 2005).

Abstract:
This study aims to observe the contribution of the residency program in nursing to the formation of specialists egressed from a public educational institution. The following questions were used to approach the matter: From the point of view of the egressed professionals, what is the contribution from the Nursing residency program to the formation of specialists? Have the professionals egressed in the Nursing residency program been applying the knowledge and skills obtained during the residency in their current areas of work? What are the contributions of the Nursing residency to the identity of a specialized nurse? The objectives of the study were: Identity the contribution of the Nursing residency program to the formation of specialists, from the professionals egressed point of view; describe the usage of the knowledge and skills obtained by the professionals egressed in the Nursing residency program in their current areas of work; and analyze the contributions from the Nursing residency program to the identity of specialized nurses. Methodology: Qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study, having as field of observation an institution of higher education which is placed in the city of Rio de Janeiro. 25 professionals egressed from the residency program of a public institution according to the established criteria of inclusion. The project met the requirements set by the Research Ethics Committee in observation of the Resolution 466/12. The data collection took place in the first semester of 2014. Regarding the treatment of testimonies, a technique of Content Analysis was applied in which results were discussed within the established theoretical approach. The results showed that the residency program, from the professionals egressed point of view, is an option to the people who have recently finished the under graduation program to acquire professional training and enter into the labor market in order to deepen theoretical knowledge in some areas. According to these professionals, the residency program constitutes a relevant tool in terms of developing professional skills, minimizing the gap of contents which were not obtained during the under graduation program. Mainly, regarding to the way patients should be treated and the high complexity of dealing with state-of-art equipment. Moreover, the residency program adds to more subjective factors, such as professional identity and satisfaction, professional recognition from the patients and institutions where the work has been performed. On the other hand, the professionals egressed in the residency program pointed out problems of institutional order experienced during their course. Mainly, in terms of the precarious labor force and the inappropriateness of the working conditions. It assumes that, although there are priceless contributions in the residency program to the appropriation of technical, interpersonal aptitudes of the professionals who have recently finished the under graduation program in Nursing and the chance of their placement within the labor market with more confidence and knowledge, there is the need of amplifying the discussion about structural factors and inappropriate labor conditions which interfere in the process of professional training. Every single effort shall be done by the institutions responsible for the residency programs in order to provide proper conditions for learning, which can impact on motivation, satisfaction and more accession to this form of professional training in service.

Abstract:
Through a historical-epistemological approach and an analysis of actual practices, this work focuses on the temporal dimension of professional specialization. There are two approaches to research long-term and short-term archi-urban design specialization. As a first step and making a round trip between American urban design and French urban project, we wonder about the origins of the emergence and evolution of groups of designers specialized in city-parts design. In a second step, we study four urban operations engaged in France since the introduction of the concept of urban project. The objective is to understand the impact of the multidisciplinary on the place and role of architects-urbanites in the project. The two approaches are complementary. They show that the leeway of a designer in the design process does not depend only on his professional identity but also on the time and duration of his involvement in these processes. This time and this duration can be controlled, in part, through the management of the project and its temporality. Thus, the birth of new specialties - as embodiments of the temporary specialization - not only due to the nature and context of the architectural and urban command, but also by the strategies put in place to respond to this command

Landscape architecture’s scope of knowledge and professional practice is continuously broadening. Formalized certification and certification standards do not exist to date; as a result, limiting the depth of knowledge in landscape architects. Beyond competency in core skills like natural systems, site planning and design, and visualization graphics, the general knowledge base of most landscape architects spans a variety of disciplines. This ability to “see the bigger picture” offers certain strengths when “placemaking”, interacting with allied professionals, and leading project teams; yet there are limited opportunities for landscape architects to formally develop a depth of expertise. An extensive literature search identified forty-one knowledge domains that exist in landscape architecture. This report identifies fourteen domains that landscape architects need in current and future work supported with identified core skills and knowledge in the profession. This report seeks to update the Council of Landscape Architecture Registration Board’s (CLARB) identification of knowledge domains by layering skills and knowledge found in sixty current job postings, literature search, and structured interviews. In addition, this report identifies future trends in the profession and marketplace and future dilemmas landscape architects must address in the next twenty years. Content analysis of certification programs offered to landscape architecture students at accredited schools was conducted. A certification precedent study was conducted to understand the range of certification standards that exist in order to propose a standardized certification program. Thirteen themes are identified in the structured interviews that are incorporated into themes of this report. Overall, professionals feel that landscape architecture’s strength as a generalist profession makes the profession unique from its allied professions. However, some professionals acknowledge that as a landscape architect progresses in his or her career, they tend toward areas of specialization. This report suggests that certifications be offered to graduate students and professionals, explains specialization in the profession, and identifies areas landscape architects need to increase their skills and knowledge in, to stay relevant.

Delcourt, Irène. "Surveiller et guérir : émergence, professionnalisation et déclin d'une première médecine de l'addiction (New York, 1861-1920)." Thesis, Paris, EHESS, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019EHES0146.

Abstract:
The medical management of drug addiction in the United States has become, in the first two decades of the 21st century, of particular interest to historians, sociologists and scientists. In the midst of an unprecedented “opioid epidemic”, this research intends to explore mostly unchartered parts of the long and troubled history of the medicalization of narcotic addiction in the U.S., particularly the emergence in turn-of-the-century New-York of a professional medical specialty, known today as addictology. From the early days of the Gilded Age to the end of the Progressive Era, a small group of self-proclaimed experts, founding fathers of the Inebriety Movement, developed the “disease theory of addiction”, reframing an old vice as a modern pathology and briefly allowing the medical profession to appropriate the problem of narcotic drug dependence. These pioneer addictologists established a professional jurisdiction, an area of expertise and a concrete sphere of influence within the State of New York. The early criminalization of the sale and use of narcotics in the 1910s, however, halted the development of the new profession – as the figure of the "narcomaniac" patient progressively disappeared, giving way to that of the "junkie" criminal, medical authority over drug addiction was questioned, challenged and ultimately impounded for several decades

Abstract:
This study explored the link between teachers’ inputs and process and students’ academic achievement in Junior Secondary Certificate (JSC) Mathematics for the period 2006 to 2010.The outcome (teacher effectiveness) was obtained by means of value added measures (students’ aggregate JSC Mathematics scores for 2006 to 2010 by school). One hundred and fifty JSC schools out of a total of 573 constituted the units of analysis for the study. The data regarding teachers were obtained by means of self-administered questionnaires, and JSC Mathematics results from 2006 to 2010 were obtained from the Directorate of National Examinations and Assessment (DNEA). Multi-correlation and regression techniques at alpha =0.001; 0.05 and 0.10 were used to analyse the link between teachers’ inputs and processes, and students’ academic achievement in JSC Mathematics. The null hypotheses formulated for the study were tested at the 0.05 (5%) level of significance. In summary, it appears that the various aspects of teachers’ inputs (teachers’ educational qualifications, teaching experience, subject specialisation etc.), processes (standards-based professional development, standards-based classroom activities, and classroom management beliefs) are related to students’ academic achievement in JSC Mathematics. In particular, a linear combination of the following variables had a significant and positive association with students’ academic achievement in JSC Mathematics: teachers’ major in Mathematics (teachers’ inputs); teachers’ usage of whole class discussion (standards-based classroom activities); perceived knowledge of algebra; teachers’ professional development in interdisciplinary instruction; teachers’ review of students’ homework/assignments; and students talking to other students about how to solve mathematics problems. Teachers’ pedagogical content knowledge (PCK) in general, and some classroom practices were not significantly related to students’ academic achievements. This study, therefore, recommends that teachers’ professional development should focus on the subject matter that the teachers will be teaching, as well as alignment of teachers’ learning opportunities with real work experience using actual curriculum materials and assessment.

Abstract:
This thesis deals with the history and present state of the education of paediatric nurses and their attitudes towards their own profession. The first objective was to find out information regarding the education in the nursing profession in Bohemia, with a focus on child care, and to create an overview of the education in the profession Paediatric Nurse. The second objective was to find out about the attitudes of paediatric nurses towards their profession. Interviewed were sisters who chose the profession after finishing elementary school and underwent qualifying studies as well as nurses who chose the profession after graduating from a secondary school or university education and achieved their education through specialization studies. The last objective was to compare these two groups and to assess whether there are any differences between them. The theoretical background of the thesis defined basic concepts such as the definition of education, education in nursing, a profession, and attitude towards a profession. Documents related to education since the foundation of nursing education to the present were also used and studied. The chapters on the status of nursing staff and its employment chances focus on the development of the relationship to the profession and shaping attitudes towards it. In the research part of the thesis, the collected information related to education and derived from archival documents, literature, laws and regulations is presented. The results can be used as a basis for creating educational material focused on the history of the field and intended for the education of paediatric nurses to strengthen their identification with the profession. The thesis also presents interviews with in-service paediatric nurses where they express their views on the work in the field and their attitudes towards their profession. The results of the interviews are documented and organized so that it is possible to assess whether there are any differences between these groups. The anticipated differences can be used for further investigation focused on attitudes to the profession. Verified knowledge could then be used for training paediatric nurses aimed at creating desired attitudes towards the profession.

Rousseau, Jane. "Empowered or Tokenized?: The Experiences of Aboriginal Human Service Workers and Organizational Responses in a Historically Oppressive Child Welfare System." Thesis, 2014. http://hdl.handle.net/1828/5273.

Full text
Abstract:
Government human service organizations regularly attempt to recruit ethnically and culturally diverse professionals to improve services to diverse communities. The assumption here is that organizational culture and structure support this organizational practice. This study considers the unique challenge for Aboriginal professionals who work in a government child welfare system responsible for the oppression of Aboriginal children, families, and communities. As a non-Aboriginal organizational insider and researcher, I use a combined Indigenous/ethnographic approach to explore these issues with Aboriginal professionals within the British Columbia Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD). This study involves a dual focus that examines the history, identity, values, motivations, and practice approaches of Aboriginal professionals as well as how organizational structural and environment variables support or impede their representation of community needs and interests. Analysis of these two areas results in significant findings for the organization, the social work profession, and various practice and organizational diversity literatures. Aboriginal participant descriptions of values, beliefs, and practices contribute to literature exploring contemporary Indigenous practice approaches that integrate traditional knowledge with professional practice. Consistent with some representative bureaucracy studies, participant descriptions of personal history, experience, practice, and motivation to work in MCFD indicate values, beliefs, and motivations strongly shared with their representative group: to reduce the number of Aboriginal children in government care and reconnect them to community. Aboriginal participant role tensions and dual accountabilities, resulting from their unique community/Ministry insider/outsider position, provide context to studies that explore tensions and contradictions that exist for diverse professionals working in their communities through mainstream organizations. Findings also contribute to studies in representative bureaucracy and other organizational diversity approaches concerned with the ability of diverse professionals to actively represent community interests. Organizational variables, such as low Aboriginal practice support, racism, cultural incompetence, hierarchical structure and decision making, risk-averse practice norms, poorly implemented rhetorical change initiatives, and institutional physical environments, among others, impede the ability of Aboriginal participants to actively represent community interests. Mitigating factors were found where some Aboriginal participants describe significant organizational support at the worksite level through dedicated culturally competent Aboriginal management and practice teams.

Gardner, Heidi. Teamwork and Collaboration in Professional Service Firms. Edited by Laura Empson, Daniel Muzio, Joseph Broschak, and Bob Hinings. Oxford University Press, 2015. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oxfordhb/9780199682393.013.21.

Abstract:
The nature of teamwork in professional service firms, as in many other knowledge-intensive environments, is evolving from highly structured project teams to more fluid, open-ended, peer-to-peer collaboration such as that between powerful, high-autonomy partners. This shift is especially challenging because senior-level collaboration requires peers from different practice groups or offices with different sub-cultures to negotiate task allocation, credit recognition, and decision-making norms, which can be difficult and politically charged. Increased partner-level collaboration is further complicated by other trends in the PSF arena such as expertise specialization, heightened professional mobility, and increased competition. Yet, this phenomenon remains largely under-researched and under-theorized. The chapter therefore lays out a research agenda focusing on opportunities to better understand peer collaboration in PSFs. In addition, the chapter identifies ways that recent changes in the professional sector challenge our understanding of traditional teamwork, and it identifies specific gaps that deserve scholarly attention.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper presents data and analysis from survey research conducted by the Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Information and Communications Technology Access for Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Access for Community Living, Health and Function (LiveWell RERC) on the perceptions and attitudes of clinical professionals in rehabilitation medicine regarding mobile health (mHealth) and mobile rehabilitation (mRehab) practices, techniques and technology in the United States. The analytical focus of this paper is on two key survey questions related to specific barriers and opportunities (most critical use-cases) for adopting mHealth/mRehab interventions. We present response data to these two questions segmented by clinical specialty – physical, occupational, speech and recreation therapy – to identify possible variation between and among these rehabilitation professions. This analysis provides a detailed map of the terrain of clinician expectations and experiences for the adoption and implementation of mHealth/mRehab interventions in the United States, and possibly other countries. Results show substantial support for mRehab interventions and technologies across all four clinical specialties. The most frequently identified barriers to effective use of mobile and internet technologies to support patients remotely focused on patients (ability to learn and use the technology, and internet access), not clinicians. The was more variability among clinical specializations regarding best use-cases. Tracking patient adherence to prescribed activities and supporting patients in the home and community were the most frequently cited best use cases across the whole sample.

Abstract:
The interpreters' cultural role has evolved significantly over time. Understanding the profession's history is necessary to understand its cultural evolution. Prior to professionalization, history portrayed interpreters as intercultural agents who held power as essential players, working as cultural and linguistic mediators. With the advent of conference interpreting in the Nuremberg Trials, a new professional image reflected the primary role of the interpreter as a linguistic medium. Due to the more interactive communicative activities involved, dialogue interpreting reflected a broader cultural role. This chapter discusses how the cultural role of the interpreter evolved over time, and within specializations. It gives an overview of the evolution of the cultural role in historic interpreting, conference interpreting, community interpreting, and in the medical interpreting specialization.

Abstract:
In this paper we share the interim results of an on-going research on the emerging profession "broker of information" (infobroker) in today's Information Society. The infobroker concept is developed and the required knowledge and skills for the infobroker successful professional performance are identified. The research findings are based on an extensive investigation and analysis of existing forms of information brokering and their evolvement and reshaping in the context of the rapid development of computer-based information and communication technologies, and Internet, in particular. The research reported here is limited to the market of information services in Bulgaria - a small, developing, non-English speaking country. The research objectives were to define the critical factors for professional success, including required knowledge, skills, and professional attitude, and to specify the job perspectives for an infobroker. Our further research aims at developing of a curriculum model for training infobrokers. We have found that in the last ten years the requirements for the infobrokers have changed significantly in two areas: professional attitude and computing skills. Changes were observed also in the requirements for foreign languages skills and narrow professional specialization. The research findings show that the infobroker profession nowadays differs significantly from the one in the pre-Internet era and we argue that it has to be considered a new emerging profession.

Abstract:
Inclusive education (also known as inclusion) is an important principle in modern education. However, it is also a great challenge for the whole education system, beginning with the education policy and ending with activities promoting each child’s development. Researchers have pointed out that professional teachers are the key to the success of implementing inclusion; therefore, all teacher education programmes have paid close attention not only to topical issues of the specific specialization methodology, but also to topics that form teachers’ professional competence in the field of inclusion. In an analysis of research studies on inclusive teachers’ professional profiles, it is important to assess the core values and competencies that teachers need to acquire in order to prepare all teachers for work in inclusive education. The aim of the research is to evaluate the future pre-school teachers’ attitudes and readiness to implement the principles of inclusion in their teaching. We used the survey and statistical data processing methods in a descriptive empirical study. The study concludes that future pre-school teachers’ attitudes are generally positive about the implementation of inclusion into pre-schools; however, a greater understanding of the essence of an inclusive approach is needed in the study process, as most students consider their knowledge and skills to be insufficient.

Abstract:
Generally cluster aims to make all firms and corporates which belong to the same logistic chain to be professional about a specific area. Specifically cluster makes easier for corporates to be in front of their rivals by increasing efficiency, using advantages of geographical closeness and also with high specialization and providing important opportunities for high value-added products. Cluster policies have provided more efficient areas by means of highly competent regions for their firms. In this study, we have searched and analyzed the pre-requisite conditions for clusters and reasons behind them, the relationship between competition-venue and between innovation and clusters, also important actors in the process of cluster development. We have also explained the theoretical framework behind the concept of cluster and focus on the efficiency of clustering policies. In this framework, we try to put optimum samples of cluster policies both in Turkey and the globe. Under the global competition and within the era of research and knowledge, it is so crucial for firms to pay attention for importance of clusters and their role in benefiting form advantages of cluster policies. As a result, we can say that nation states today need to develop a multi-dimensional and mutual-influential national cluster policies in order to provide more appropriate manufacturing environment and innovative human capital for their national firms. Our study explains the reasons of this opinion by taking consideration of the realities of countries and some major industries with a number of real specific examples.

Abstract:
Teams are employed in capstone mechanical design courses, as well as in other undergraduate courses. This puts students in a setting that they will encounter as professionals, which is beneficial to their development. For instructors, however, teams make it difficult to evaluate each individual’s understanding of the design process. While specialization is not as expected in undergraduate work, the level of variation between members of a team is not fully known. In this study design journals were kept by students during their capstone projects and entries were categorized using a coding scheme. This data revealed what a typical student recorded as activity during a capstone design project. Additionally the amount of variation within a team and among students as a whole was examined.

Abstract:
The C language has been used for ages in the application development in multidisciplinary environments. However, in the academia, this language is being replaced by other higher-level languages due to they are easier to understand, learn and apply. Moreover, the necessity of professionals with a good knowledge in those high-level languages is constantly increasing because of the boosting of mobile devices. This scenario generates a lack of low-level language programmers, required in other less trendy fields, but equal or more important, such as science, engineering or research. In order to revive the interest in low-level languages and provide those minority fields with well-prepared staff, we present in this work a MOCC C-programming course that is addressed to any kind of people with or without IT background. A feature that differentiates this course from others programming online-based courses is that we mainly focus on the C language syntax providing, via a self-tuned virtual machine, an encapsulated environment that hides any interaction with the command-line of the underlying operating system. A secondary target of this work is to foster the computer science degree students to enrol the computer architecture specialization at the Universitat Jaume I (Spain). For this purpose, the High Performance Computing and Architectures research group of that University has decided to use this C course as a tool for fulfill the gap of the current syllabus. The results show that half of the participants that completed the first session of the course have satisfactorily finished the course, and the number of computer science degree students that chose the computer architecture specialization the following academic course was increment by 3x.
