Abstract:
This study explores the field of social work values in the social work profession. The aim of the study is to explore how social work values are related to empowerment practices and organizational structures inside the social work field. By using the perspective of empowerment and professional doxa these structures inside the social work field are explored in interviews with nine social workers. These nine interviews show how social workers relate to values insides their profession, how empowerment practices are done, and what kind of organizational conflicts social workers may experience. By using the perspectives of empowerment and professional doxa the interviews been analysed and connected to both local and global concerns for the social work field. Many professional conflicts were found by taking these perspectives that are discussed in this study, as for example role conflicts social workers could experience. Other conflicts were those of structural failures that caused harm to client contacts and economic factors that were deemed more important for organizations than good client outcomes.

Papouli, Eleni. "The development of professional social work values and ethics in the workplace : a critical incident analysis from the students' perspective." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2014. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/48325/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores Greek social work students' perceptions of the development of their professional values and ethics in the workplace during their professional practice placement. To accomplish its goals, the thesis includes a literature review and employs a qualitative exploratory research design with descriptive elements positioned within the constructivist paradigm. This research design allows the researcher to explore and describe a topic - social work values and ethics - that is generally under-researched in the existing literature, as well as being complex in nature and difficult to study. Data were collected using the critical incident technique (CIT). This method took the form of a written questionnaire (the CIT questionnaire) completed by 32 students between 11th and 25th October, 2010. The data were inductively analysed using both qualitative and quantitative approaches. SPSS and SPAD software packages were also used to analyse the numerical and textual data respectively. The study findings underline the vital role of the workplace as a social space for students to learn and develop their professional social work values and ethics. They also highlight the complexity of implementing social work values and ethics in the different workplace environments that students, as trainees, are placed for their professional practice due to their situation-specific nature. Further, the study reveals a number of factors that, from the students' point of view, are important in applying and upholding professional ethical standards in social work practice. These factors are associated with: a) the need to practice social work values and ethics in the workplace on a daily basis in order to keep them alive and active; b) the students' own contribution to upholding ethical standards; c) the role practice instructors/supervisors play in the transmission of social work values to students during their placements; d) the importance of ethical collaboration inside and outside the workplace to achieve the best practices for clients; e) the client's behaviour as a determinant of the ethical practice of social workers in the workplace; and f) the importance of the ethics of management (including the political affiliation of the heads of organisations) in creating and sustaining an ethical work/learning environment. The study suggests that all the factors mentioned above-to a greater or lesser degree- should be considered important elements to take into account in the planning and development of values-based social work education programmes. Special attention should be paid to workplace conditions that can hinder or support the development of values-based social work practice. As the study clearly shows, daily ethical practice in social work, students as individuals, the role of practice instructors, ethical workplace collaboration, client behaviour, and the ethics of management are crucial components for building upon the ethical skills taught in the classroom and developing ethically informed professional identities in real-life workplace situations. The thesis concludes that the critical incidents experienced by students are a valuable source of knowledge and understanding of the development of social work values and ethics in professional practice. In this study, indeed, students gained valuable insights into their ethics development process in practice contexts, from both positive and negative critical incidents alike.

Abstract:

Ongoing structural and financial changes in the health care sector have resulted in increased risks for ethical dilemmas and moral distress. It is purported that increased ethical competence will help staff manage ethical dilemmas and hence decrease moral distress. To enhance ethical competence several approaches may be used – theoretical education, and methods focusing on reflection and decision-making abilities.

Ethics rounds are a widespread systematic method hypothesized to improve ethical competence, nurture a reflective climate, and help in ethical decision-making. Despite its popularity, its effects on moral distress have hitherto never been evaluated in a controlled study.

The purpose of this thesis was to evaluate the impact of an intervention, including ethics rounds; the hypothesis being that the intervention would decrease perceived moral distress. An additional aim was exploring the concept of moral distress in various health care establishments, including pharmacies.

Focus groups were conducted to explore the concept of moral distress. To evaluate the intervention a scale assessing staff-perceived moral distress was designed, validated, and implemented.

Results showed that moral distress is evident in diverse health care settings. Some factors associated with this were lack of resources, conflicts of interest, and rules that are incompatible with practice. An expanded definition of moral distress was presented.

The training program was much appreciated by participants. However, no significant effects on perceived moral distress were found. Reasons could be that the intervention was too short or otherwise ineffective, there is no association between ethical competence and moral distress, the assessment scale was not sensitive enough, or management was not sufficiently involved.

There is a need to further refine the various aspects of ethical dilemmas in clinical settings, and to evaluate the most efficient means to enhance skills for dealing with ethical dilemmas, for the benefit of staff, patients, institutions, and society.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2002.
ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Recent literature on values suggests that advanced, industrial societies are displaying a marked shift away from traditional values that stress material prosperity, physical and economic security towards values that are more expressive of individual freedom, autonomy and growth. According to Inglehart, forces of modernisation and globalisation have initiated a number of systemic level changes, that have ushered in processes of objective and subjective individualisation, dramatically altering the nature and structure of human value orientations and societal norms. Work values, as expressions of general life values in the work context, are no exception to this process. In the new world of work, intrinsic work values that stress personal growth, development and self-determination should gradually replace extrinsic work values such as good pay, job security and status. An understanding of the nature, direction and distribution of such value change could prove invaluable to the organizational practitioner and policy maker, since work values playa pivotal role in shaping organisational structure, process and policy. According to Inglehart, a number of developing countries are displaying similar shifts towards individualised values. Although classified as a middle-income, developing economy, South Africa has undergone a number of prolific economic, political and cultural changes over the last decade that would undoubtedly have altered the nature, direction and distribution of work values in the country. It is in the light of these political, economic and cultural developments that the current study embarked on an analysis of the nature, direction and distribution of work value change in South Africa between 1990 and 2001. The analysis was informed by the proposition that the work values of South Africans citizens should reflect a shift in the direction of individualised work values between 1990 and 2001. South Africans have, however, been exposed to and socialized within vastly different social, economic and political environments. The study has therefore taken cognisance of the fact that work value change in South Africa should reflect the stark cleavages and differences that exist within the population, and attempted to plot the differences in the nature and direction of work values between the various social categories defined by race, gender, educational and occupational level. The secondary analysis of survey data from the South African components of the 1990, 1995 and 2001 World Values Survey was performed in order to fulfil the objectives of the study. Work values of South African citizens were measured in terms of four dimensions, namely work centrality; work values relating to the distribution of power in the organization; work values relating to work preferences; and work values relating to authority systems in the workplace. Use was made of simple uni-variate and bi-variate analysis, as well as the comparison of means where appropriate. The results of the analysis suggest that work values relating to work centrality and the distribution of power in the organisation have become increasingly individualised. Work values relating to work preferences and authority have, however, displayed a trend in opposition to individualisation. Comparisons of work value change across the various sub-groups of the population reflect the changing economic, social and political landscape of South Africa. The data suggests that as various sub-groups of the population are exposed to the systemic level changes characteristic of the new South Africa, traditional value differences informed by race, gender, educational and occupational level will be gradually transformed and replaced by new value patterns untainted by the inequalities of the apartheid era. The analysis concludes by examining a number of explanations for the value changes described, and attempts to infer implications for the formulation and implementation of workplace policy and practice in South Africa. The high and increasing levels of unemployment and the increasing participation of women and previously excluded racial groupings into the South African labour market have increased perceptions of job insecurity in South Africa and have resulted in an expanding number of South Africans placing increased emphasis on traditional work preferences and systems of authority. Should this trend persist, the development of individualised work values will continue to be hindered, rendering the South African business environment less competitive and increasingly fraught with high levels of distrust and uncertainty. We suggest, therefore, that human resource practitioners and policy makers embark on the challenging task of reframing individual perceptions surrounding the meaning of work in South Africa, so as to better prepare South Africans for the challenges brought about by the new world of work

Abstract:

The study aims to examine the forms and contents of interaction of government, Social Administration and education administration, with the declared intention is to work for the pupil's best and create an overall perspective on the student. It is for me a timely subject because we as future teachers know that all students have different needs for support and help. Vulnerable children are in need of adults and are in a dependent position. The school is an operation and Social Administration of another who might be part of the vulnerable children's lives. Interesting and topical feel, therefore, to examine who has the responsibility and how you can interact around a student from school and Social Administration? To investigate this, a qualitative study conducted interviews with a total of five teachers in the Individual Program and a principal part, and two social workers.

The study results show that collaboration is needed and necessary, all participating in the study sees a synergy is positive and the more the better. It is based on personal contacts and is dependent on personal relationships, making cooperation work differently. Secrecy is lifted as a barrier to collaboration on a teacher's views, while the Social Administration does not see confidentiality as a barrier where there are confidentiality-breaking rules.

Conclusions can be made after the study is that we should put the abused child in the center and act for the best. We have different professional roles that we should protect and this requires a collaboration of government to support the abused child in the best and most efficient manner.

Assessments of cases of suspected negligence with child and adolescent done by social workers make up the core of this dissertation. The questioning regarding the theoretical and methodological repertoire and moral dimension found in these situations become more relevant once the intention of the research is to reveal, in daily work, how these evaluations are materialized from the perspective of those who perform, the social workers. Thereto, apart from bibliographic research on the subject, it was also established - as part of the qualitative methodology - conducting semi-structured interviews with six randomly chosen social workers enrolled in different socio-occupational activities that offer assistance to families, and, among other demands, present situations of suspected neglect. Therefore, the two chapters deal with: 1 - evaluate critically and historically the interface among the Social Work, Children and Professional Ethics, dialoguing with their main characteristics; 2 - present field research, explaining the methodology and the main findings of the research. As part of the findings, there is a moral dimension and the use of value judgments in assessments of neglect, with predominant use of negative values by social workers. Noteworthy is also the perception of "neutrality" by the subject, reiterating the myth of the professional impartiality; the insufficient problematization on the ethical dimension in professional practice. Finally, we suggest the use of the concept of overcoming neglect, considering its current use filled with prejudice, and to review it guided by the perspective of protection and no protection

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study aims to investigate economic support carried out by social workers within municipal social services and how they deal with clients who need both economic support and are substance abusers. We made six semi-structured interviews in two municipalities. They were analysed by means of content analysis, system theory and self-determination theory (SDT) and in accordance with professional ethics. Our results show that the social workers face problems in planning and assessment concerning these clients, especially beacuse of social exclusion at the labour market. Leave only one way to re-entrance in society, voluntarily addiction treatment. The social workers are torn between the purpose of control in their investigation and how to support their clients, causing troublesome dilemmas in their profession. These clients are made visible as a vulnerable sub-group of clients in a welfare system built on activity. Motivation and cooperation with other organisations is the key to make change. Our study intends to promote development of both theroretical and practical knowledge in the field.

Abstract:
Canadian health professionals are involved in humanitarian assistance and development work in many regions of the world. They participate in primary health care, immunization campaigns, feeding programs, rehabilitation and hospital-based care. In the course of their work clinicians are frequently exposed to complex ethical issues. This thesis examines how health workers experience ethics in the course of humanitarian assistance and development work. A qualitative study was conducted to consider this question. Five core themes emerged from the data including experiencing a tension between respecting local customs and imposing values, knowing how to respond when basic care is impossible, addressing differing understandings of health and illness, questions of identity for health workers, and issues of trust and distrust. Recommendations are made for standards and organizational strategies that could help aid agencies better support and equip their staff as they respond to ethical issues.

Abstract:

This dissertation introduces the ethical sense of self-care focused to the competitive work environments, from the works of Seneca, entitled From tranquility of the Soul, The brevity of life, The happy life and Letters to Lucilio, having as a theory support, the interpretations made by Michel Foucault, in the book The Hermeneutics of the Subject. The study of the mentioned works of Seneca allows to demonstrate their interrelations with self-care and with care of others as well as with the meaning of self-care in the unfailing context of this philosopher. Faced with the question of what is the meaning of self-care in competitive work environments, which can not be restricted only to the extention of physical space, but extend to the dimension of the individual's life, intended to consider the sense of self-care, by the ethical look of Seneca and relate it to competitive work environments. Through analysis of Seneca’s theory and understanding of the competitive environments' formation, supported in the Herbert Marcuse's work, The ideology of one-dimensional society and in the works of Foucault, Monitor and Punish and Words and Things, you can reflect if the self-care and the competition are a paradox for the man who does his job, to guarantee his sustenance or look for higher performance's levels and personnel achievement.

This dissertation aims to analyze how the social workers inserted at Human Resources (HR) units of public institutions in decentralized administration of Pernambuco at Recife City, facing the current institutions demands, aiming materialize the Project Ethical-Political Professional (EPP), in the context of Counter- Reformation of Brazilian state, laws, ordinances, internal rules about the searchable institutions, interviewed the social workers full in the HR units of their institutions. The professional practice of the social workers pass through of instituted Pernambuco state, since the end of 1990, likeness to what happened occurred at federal level. The professional activities, also, are related with the actual approach of the HR units. To these conferred rights that seek to maintain control over the workforce seeking to extinguish the obstacles that may interfere directly in the work of employees, and consequently in meeting institutional goals. The cosical Worker is hired mainly due to his interventional characteristic. Decentralized public institutions of Pernambuco are seeking for technician agent capable of performing activities that converge to the immediate change of the institutional routine, through direct service to users. The materialization of (EPP) is presented as a major challange for social workers who are inserted in Human Resources (HR) units of public institutions form the decentralized administration of Pernambuco, head office in the city of Recife. Added to counter-reformation situation, professional practices when limited to institutional duties do not make the principles and values that guide the (EPP) affective in the daily work. The chalslenge is to decode the concrete reality inscribed in the professional practice of social workers inserted in HR units in the constant quest to contribute to building a just society, free from exploitation of man by man.

Abstract:
Book Summary: In addition to providing foundational information about ethical codes and legal statues, this new text advocates for counseling personnel to view ethical issues as challenges for personal and professional growth. Written in an accessible, concise and easy to read style, this book endeavors to broaden the traditional focus of ethical study to include topics that students and practicing clinicians will find consistent with their own personal striving and professional needs. While covering the traditional core percepts of professional ethics in considerable detail: confidentiality, informed consent, boundaries and the use of power, and competency and professional responsibility, it also advocates for counseling personnel to view ethical issues as challenges for personal and professional growth. And, it includes a number of critical topics that counselors and therapists face or will face in daily practice. These include organizational ethics, virtue ethics, and an expanded view of multicultural ethics with a focus on community values as well as on religious and spiritual issues. This new book includes a special chapter in the appendix that emphasizes ways in which counselors and therapists can grow and achieve excellence in their personal and professional lives. Unique and essential coverage of organizational ethics (OE) is addressed making readers aware of how organizational dynamics can exert such powerful influence on ethical decision making (Ch 4 & 10-14). Unique coverage of the ethical considerations involving spiritual and religious issues as well as the use of alternative interventions in counseling and psychotherapy are covered, including the common lawsuits brought against counselors and therapists using spiritual and alternative interventions (Ch 3). A unique section in the appendix describes the psychological and philosophical basis of ethical decision-making for readers who want and need a more in-depth discussion.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study is to illustrate where the boundary between being professional and being private in the line of work as a personal assistant lie, this study will focus on the perspective of the unit manager. This to clarify the ethical approach in the assistance matters for the unit manager. To answer the study's purpose and questions, six individual semi-structured interviews have been held with unit managers responsible for personal assistance in municipal activities. During the interviews, the unit managers shared their own experiences about the subject of the study. The empirical material has been analyzed with the help of normative ethics theories of duty and sense ethics. The result of the study shows that unit managers find it difficult to take a stand as where the boundary between being professional and being private in personal assistance lies. There are many different factors to take into consideration when discussion where the boundary lies for each individual. Having good municipal guidelines regarding the work of the assistance is something the unit managers see as a good tool for taking a position on questions about the work of the assistants. The empirical material also highlights that there is a lot of ethical dilemmas in the matter of personal assistance, and how the unit managers handle these.

Full text
Abstract:
This study draws upon a methodological approach based on the use of objects to explore the experiences of a group of teachers undertaking a Masters-level Continuing Professional Development programme. Eight Respondents were invited to bring three objects to their interview that represented significant aspects of their practice in relation to the course. These objects afforded an exploration of respondents’ views, experiences and consideration of the impact of the programme on their professional identities. In order to engage analytically with the data the work draws upon notions of spatiality as well as the later work of Foucault on truth and subject formation. The thesis considers the role of professional learning as shaped by the current policy process and, how professional learning is, in turn, shaped by the teachers undertaking the course. Such a consideration allows for a methodological take on the CPD process as one whereby people, as well as objects, such as ‘standards’, play equally important roles. In drawing upon the later work of Foucault (1984a, 1984b) analysis of the data considered the ways in which the practices of the course that the teachers engaged with (Askēsis) lead to a desire to speak their mind and express ideals of truth about educational practice (Parrhēsia). This means that in thinking about their practice through the activities and processes of the programme encourages the development of the ethical work of the teacher. In the light of such problematisation, this study encourages a rethinking of both policy and practice and argues for a change in the discourse of education from the concept of professional development to that of professional learning within a relational and ethical framing.

Humphreys, Stephen John. "The work of Phase I ethics committees : expert and lay membership." Thesis, University of Hertfordshire, 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/2299/10314.

Full text
Abstract:
Previous research has noted that members of research ethics committees are unclear about the extent of their roles. In this study, research amongst members of independent ethics committees (IECs) about how the ‘expert’ and ‘lay’ roles are understood and operationalized offers an explanation for this lack of clarity. IECs were selected for study because they have only addressed one type of research (Phase 1 ‘healthy volunteer’ studies) and this limited remit suggested that it would be in such committees that the member roles would have become most pronounced. Drawing on findings from the sociology of professions and employing a phenomenological approach to understanding, 20 semi-structured interviews with both expert and lay members of these committees revealed that a number of members were not only unclear about the roles, but unclear too whether they, or certain of their colleagues, were in which membership category. Notwithstanding this fact, and paradoxically, the ‘expert’ designation was seen as granting its members a privileged position on the committees. The expert member was seen to be either a medically qualified member or one tightly associated with the medical model. Such a repository of expertise being with the medical model privileges this model in ethics review such that other matters formally to be scrutinized by ethics committees become marginalised. Participant safety was the prime concern of the ethics review for IEC members. This relegated other matters including the adequacy of the insurance arrangements, the readability of the consent forms, the fairness of the inclusion criteria, and so forth, into areas of lesser concern. That this occurs though when the science, the safety and the methodology of the trials are already – separately - subject to an independent analysis by a body of experts, whose statutory role is to concern itself with these issues such that no trial may occur without their sanction, is of significance. IEC members were cognizant of this duplication of role but unable to resolve it. The situation could be accounted for as due to capture by the medical model and a cognitive dissonant process. Members’ training and education were found to have been neglected because under the medical professions’ gaze no other type of knowledge was considered necessary in ethics review. The study revealed that the medical profession’s dominance of such committees accounts for the members’ role uncertainty and as such allies itself to Freidson’s theory of professional dominance. If such a concept has been thought to be an obsolete one, this study suggests such a notion of the status of the theory is premature. The medical model’s status is implicitly accepted such that nothing else need be considered. The research calls for further studies to corroborate such findings in other research ethics settings and for a debate about what society wants its ethics committees to focus upon in their review.

Abstract:
Cultural competence and ethical decision making are two separate, yet intrinsically related concepts which are central to services rendered by all health care professionals. Cultural competence is based on ethical principles and informs ethical decision making. In spite of this important connection, the interrelationship of these two concepts does not receive the attention it deserves in the literature. This issue is addressed by appraising the training and assessment of cultural competence and ethical decision making in the health care professions. The integrated relationship of these two concepts is illustrated within the broader contexts of higher education, research and clinical practice. Health care professionals who incorporate cultural competence and ethical decision making will be empowered to provide the best services to their clients/ patients in multicultural contexts to ensure optimum outcomes.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis reports a study of work ethic values, beliefs and attitudes held by medical professionals in selected hospitals in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. The study was in response to the public outcry about the declining work ethic and poor service delivery in South Africa’s healthcare sector. Scholarly interest in the work ethic and its role in economic development dates back to Max Weber’s classical work, which was the starting point for my study. The German economic sociologist published his seminal essay on The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism in 1904/1905. Since that time, Weber’s ideas on the Protestant work ethic continue to inform and influence studies of the contemporary work ethic, which is thought to have become secularised. My study was informed by data collected in 2009 through a questionnaire survey and personal interviews. A total of 174 doctors and nurses, working in four urban, periurban and rural hospitals near East London, completed a self-administered questionnaire. The questionnaire replicated the Multi-Dimensional Work Ethic Profile (MWEP) developed by Miller, Woehr and Hudspeth in 2001/2002. The instrument examines seven critical dimensions of the work ethic, namely self-reliance, morality, (foregoing) leisure, hard work, centrality of work in life, not wasting time, and delay of gratification. In addition, I conducted personal interviews in the same four hospitals with 41 hospital managers, doctors, nurses, and patients to discuss their understanding of the work ethic and its practical application. The study found that both doctors’ and nurses’ overall work ethic scores on the MWEP scale were above average. Although there was no significant difference between the overall work ethic scores of the two professions, doctors scored significantly higher than nurses on the ‘hard work’ and ‘self reliance’ dimensions of the work ethic scale. In the qualitative study, the doctors’ work ethic was rated much more highly than the nurses’ by their superiors and patients; and the work ethic of nurses in the urban hospitals was rated much lower than that of their rural colleagues. In contradiction to the idea of the secularization of the contemporary work ethic, religiosity and religious beliefs were influential in the endorsement of work ethic principles. In line with the notion that ‘happy’ workers are more productive, job and life satisfaction were found to be strong correlates of the work ethic of medical professionals.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate the possibilities of applying virtue ethics in the HR-profession by presenting the foundation for virtue ethics and addressing how it could be transformed into virtue ethical principles for HR-practitioners in Swedish work-life. I address the questions how virtue ethics could support HR-practitioners in doing ”the right thing” and how a HR-practitioner should be. I argue that the fit between virtue ethics and the HR-profession rests on principles of moral consciousness and intellectual reflection and on the principles of practice and developing excellence. I also argue that moral institutionalization through measures of professional ethical codification could form an important practical feature. Mediated by the concept of phronesis, I define four core virtues for HR-practitioners: trustworthiness, cooperation, justice and integrity. I conclude that virtue ethics could be pivotal in promoting positive culture, forming the basis of increased trust, confidence and security within organizations.

Abstract:
This study was designed to extend the research on ethical beliefs to child-oriented mental health practitioners. The purpose of the study was to identify the beliefs and practices of psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers regarding confidentiality, competence, and multiple relationships, and to determine whether ethical beliefs vary by profession, gender, or other demographic and professional characteristics. A two-part questionnaire was mailed to 3000 child-oriented psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers regarding their ethical beliefs in the areas of competence, confidentiality, and multiple relationships. A total of 1029 responses were obtained. Part One of the questionnaire addressed demographic and professional information, and Part Two contained 43 behavior description stems. Respondents were asked to indicate the degree to which they felt each behavior was ethical, using a Likert-like scale. Significant (p <.001) differences were obtained between the three professional groups in their beliefs regarding multiple relationships, competence, and the total ethical belief rating. Psychiatrists were the least conservative/most accepting in their ethical belief ratings, social workers were the most conservative/least accepting and psychologists tended to fall in the middle on each measure. In addition, female practitioners endorsed a significantly (p < .001) more conservative viewpoint than did male practitioners in multiple relationships, competence, and total ethical behavior ratings. Although respondents were most in agreement in their respective beliefs about confidentiality, a significant (p < .05) difference was found for gender, with females being more conservative/less accepting than males. In the area of multiple relationships, psychiatrists indicated a greater willingness to engage in relationships such as treating the child of a close friend, and entering into business or social relationships with current or former clients, than either social workers or psychologists. Additionally, respondents as a group were more likely to rate as acceptable breaking confidentiality when working with children than when working with adolescents (p <.001). This study points to the differences, as well as areas of general agreement, in the ethical beliefs of psychiatrists, psychologists, and social workers.

Abstract:
The Ellison Executive Mentoring Inclusive Community Building (ICB) Model is a paradigm for initiating and implementing projects utilizing executives and professionals from a variety of fields and industries, university students, and pre-college students. The model emphasizes adherence to ethical values and promotes inclusiveness in community development. It is a hierarchical model in which actors in each succeeding level of operation serve as mentors to the next. Through a three-step process--content, process, and product--participants must be trained with this mentoring and apprenticeship paradigm in conflict resolution, and they receive sensitivitiy and diversity training, through an interactive and dramatic exposition. The content phase introduces participants to the model's philosophy, ethics, values and methods of operation. The process used to teach and reinforce its precepts is the mentoring and apprenticeship activities and projects in which the participants engage and whose end product demontrates their knowledge and understanding of the model's concepts. This study sought to ascertain from the participants' perspectives whether the model's mentoring approach is an effective means of fostering inclusiveness, based upon their own experiences in using it. The research utilized a qualitative approach and included data from field observations, individual and group interviews, and written accounts of participants' attitudes. Participants complete ICB projects utilizing the Ellison Model as a method of development and implementation. They generally perceive that the model is a viable tool for dealing with diversity issues whether at work, at school, or at home. The projects are also instructional in that whether participants are mentored or seve as apprentices, they gain useful skills and knowledge about their careers. Since the model is relatively new, there is ample room for research in a variety of areas including organizational studies to dertmine its effectiveness in combating problems related to various kinds of discrimination.

Abstract:
This thesis investigates the role and activities of a profession at the heart of organisational change and, specifically, the prevention of occupational risks: the ergonomist. Through socio-historical analysis and an ethnographic study, it aims to provide an understanding of this occupation which sits at the intersection of often contradictory factors: health, safety, and comfort in the workplace, and economic performance. It will identify, define, and explore this occupation’s characteristics and heterogeneity, and the consequences of balancing the contradictory factors previously mentioned on its professional ethos. The first part will focus on the evolution and empowerment of this disciplinary field, exploring the development of ergonomy in France and the professional segments within. Considering the major periods that shaped the labour market as we know it today, an analysis of the factors that favoured and hampered the creation of this occupational group will be carried out. The second part examines the role of ergonomists in situ, through interviews. Their approach, modes of intervention, and relationships and interactions with different employees relating to health and safety in the workplace are documented. This approach highlights the difficulties encountered by different professional groups in maintaining both occupational health and economic performance. The general consensus was that ergonomists tend to prioritise economic performance in the context of global depoliticisation and the management and prevention of occupational risks

Thesis, Toulouse 2, 2019. http://www.theses.fr/2019TOU20053.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation aims to investigate how professionals working for feminist non-profit organisations build a specific work ethic. Based on predominantly qualitative fieldwork, this research first describes and analyses the day-to-day work performed by these professionals, highlighting their significant skills and resourcefulness, as well as the constant learning process in which they are engaged. Emotions both constitute an important part of the counselling tasks and shape a feminist rationality. The analysis then focusses on the professionals’ careers, both in terms of work and militancy. Such analysis allows us to understand how these professionals are able to dedicate so much of their time and energy to their work, as well as how they manage to find a work-life balance. Lastly, we try to show how feminism can inform specific forms of management, by looking at the example of self-managing organisations. This fieldwork and complete study has led us to the conclusion that the work ethic of these feminist non-profit organisations realises itself within three specific spheres : the sphere of counselling in which the ethic of feminist intervention is put into practice ; the sphere of the professionals' relationship with their work and career where the work ethic as members of a feminist non-profit organisation helps them deal with sometimes modest labour conditions ; and finally the sphere of politics and feminism as a social movement where the ethic of day-to-day feminism comes into play. The dissertation aims to show how feminist professionals try to reinvent labour within feminist organisations, despite significant pressure. It also reveals the specificities of a feminist ethos shared by a wider women's movement, while at the same time proposing an innovative approach of the concept of work ethos, that could be prove useful for the study of other professions

Choate, Peter W. "Assessment of parental capacity for child protection : methodological, cultural and ethical considerations in respect of indigenous peoples." Thesis, Kingston University, 2018. http://eprints.kingston.ac.uk/42579/.

Full text
Abstract:
Parenting capacity assessments (PCA) have been used in the child intervention system in Canada since at least the 1970s. They are used in other Western jurisdictions including the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and the United States. There is a relatively large literature that considers the ways in which these assessments might be conducted. This thesis, drawing upon the prior work of the candidate, seeks to show that, despite widespread use, the PCA is a colonial methodology that should not be used with Indigenous peoples of Canada. The PCA draws upon Eurocentric understandings of parenting, definitions of minimal or good enough parenting, definitions of family and community as well as the use of methods that have neither been developed nor normed with Indigenous peoples. Using critical theory, particularly "Red Pedagogy" which is rooted in an Indigenous lens, the PCA is deconstructed to examine applicability to Indigenous populations of Canada, and potentially other populations that do not fit a Eurocentric understanding of family and parenting. Implications for clinical practice with Indigenous peoples are drawn which may have relevance for other populations.

The object of the study from the current thesis accomplished the analysis of “Ethos in the Mobility” in the Brazilian Social Work (“EMSS”) and its approaches to Antonio Gramsci thoughts. The typology research resulted from a bibliography and a documentary. The dialectic method in the Marxist thoughts afforded to investigate the determinations in the object and, consequently, the exposition of its seizures. The methodology began from the concrete reality still unknown and resulted after investigative approaches, taking everything into consideration accomplished. The aims were presented on their chapters and they go through the social and historical aspect from the “EMSS”, the existence of the “ethos”, and its relation to Gramsci’s thoughts and, finally, the same “way of being” professional and the approaches to democracy category, in Gramsci. First of all it was shown the conception of moral, ethic, value, and liberty in “EMSS”. Secondly, it was placed the “ethos” in the professional category, through the BH Method and its ethical political development presented in the III Brazilian Convention of Social Workers (Congresso da Virada), making the beginning of the social historic constitution in the current “ethos” in the profession. The investigation accomplished in the Ethical and Political Professional Project through the “EMSS” a new professional perspective, supported in the rupture intention, according Paulo Netto in “ Social Work and Dictatorship: An analysis of a Social work in Brazil after 1964”. Additionally it was presented the approaches among the constitutive category of the project: theoretical and methodological dimension, ethical and political, technical and operational and its approaches to Gramscians categories of the philosophy of praxis, political and intellectual sciences. The outcome made the presentation of the hegemony category in Gramsci and its relation to representatives entities of the profession: Federal council of Social Work, Regional Council of Social Work, the Teaching Brazilian Association of Research in Social Work and National Executive of Social Work. Finally, the investigation developed the conception of democracy in Gramsci and its approaches to the “EMSS”, where was noticed that the democratic process requires class-consciousness and the necessary resistance for its existence, being macro or micro in the political places.

This research purposed to do a Review of Vocational Training of Social Workers of the Social Service Course at the Universidade Federal do Triangulo Mineiro in Uberaba-MG, as well as assess how contributions paragraph the materialization of Professional Ethical-Political Project. It highlighted the training process of the social worker in Brazil, scrapped by the logic of capital's offensive in the commodification of education policy in relation to higher education. Still it sought to give cientific academic visibility in the analysis of Lesson Plans in the pedagogical project of the social service graduation course in UFTM. The method used in this study was dialectical materialism-history, which led to the seizure of the real movement of contradictions. The research is characterized as literature and documents, and the approach is qualitative. The analysis and interpretation of data was seized by content analysis. This research stands out as a study of a specific case that is the formation of a course of Social Work recently created (2009) as a result of the Restructuring and Expansion of Federal Universities in an institution that is the Universidade Federal do Triangulo Mineiro in the city of Uberaba- MG. It is an important study, since there isn´t recorded investigations of this nature. The analyzes showed that the course has returned his gaze with commitment to training, demonstrated in EPC- Educational Project Course and Lesson plans, and identification of the course. It showed that the lesson plans cater to providing the Curriculum Guidelines 1996 and bring and elements of the Code of Ethics of Social Work 1993 and aspects of Regulatory Law 8,662 / 93. However, it was not possible to identify the crosscutting nature of the content and discussions of the Ethical-Political Professional Project. Although the plans meet the requirements of the Curriculum Guidelines 1996, it is still possible to identify the absence or fragmentation of discussion related to the Professional Ethical-Political Project and its components during the training. This research does not end here, it‘s needed more research that can reveal the real challenges of both the teachers and the students in the materialization of the Ethical-Political Professional Project in the training process, as it said previously this research sought to voice the documents, it‘s needed to hear the actors of vocational training with field research with comparative study and other forms of research.

Desprat, Diane. Thesis, Paris 10, 2017. http://www.theses.fr/2017PA100133.

Abstract:
Among Hairdressers, the injunction to satisfy the client, to bring him a moment of relaxation and well-being seems to participate in their professional rhetoric. This insistence on customer care reveals the weight of the service relationship in the work activity of hairdressers. Consequently, it is often described positively. However, it is not without problems and can be the subject of tensions. Based on an ethnographic survey carried out by participant observations and interviews in several hairdressing salons and two hairdressing training establishments, this thesis focuses on the relationship of hairdressers to work and more specifically to the relationship between hairdressers and clients and the resulting ambivalence. In fact, in order to carry out this relationship, the profession builds a set of specific provisions (skills, emotional and relational work) directed at the clients and to which the apprentices are socialized during their school and hairdresser training. However, not all is created in the service relationship, some skills relying on social provisions of gender and class. Having these provisions is central to the good progress of this relationship and thus being able to make a career in the profession

Abstract:
The present study addressed the possibility of realization of the current Project Ethical-Political Brazilian Social Work in social direction printed on the work of social workers in the Department of Penitentiary Administration of Rio de Janeiro (SEAP) with precarious labor ties. Selected professionals with temporary contracts, ie, slums, because we believe that the weakness of the employment relationship may be an important factor intensification and aggravation of the tension inherent in the professional work of the social worker in the socio-occupational, detrimentally impacting not only working conditions of professionals, but, importantly, in the quality of services provided to users and therefore the possibilities and limits of materialization of critical current Project Professional. Hence, because we consider necessary studies to turn to professionals with precarious labor ties, especially professionals working on complex sites like the Department of Penitentiary Administration. We underscore the importance of research that should attend to professional work, in that it constitutes a privileged locus of contact between the social worker and those it serves, in view of the character of interventional profession. The empirical research was conducted through interviews with social workers in SEAP with the selected profile, or precarious employment relationship. We use also our experience as a social worker, field observations and informal conversations with the interviewees. This research was guided by critical social theory, ie the dialectical and historical materialism.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT Background: Previous criminal justice policies have been non-effective leading to overpopulated prisons and unsuccessful reintegration. There is a lack of effective supportive and/or rehabilitative services resulting in high rates of recidivism and mental health implications. Objective: This study investigated the perceived impact that incarceration and reintegration with little to no supportive and/or rehabilitative services has on the mental health status of an individual. The emphasis was on participant perception and not on professional reports because of underreporting and lack of attention to mental health in the criminal justice system. Methods: Focus groups in the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley were held to gather preliminary data used to develop the survey for this study. The survey was distributed to 88 male and female ex-offenders over the age of 18 who were no longer on probation or parole. Secondary data from United Way 211 and California State Reentry Initiative was collected to report current trends of supportive and/or rehabilitative services. Results: Incarceration was found to negatively impact perceived mental health status, but reintegration was not. Supportive and/or rehabilitative services continue to be rarely offered and accessed, but when accessed, perceived mental health status is better. Supportive and/or rehabilitative services are more readily available. People who are using these services are improving their quality of life, becoming productive members of society, and preventing recidivism. Conclusions: A paradigm shift is currently under way to reduce recidivism by improving supportive and/or rehabilitative services during incarceration and reintegration. Many offenders are receiving services as an alternative to incarceration, recidivism rates are being reduced, and ex-offenders are becoming productive members of society. The field of social work is an integral part of reentry services and should continue advocating for policies and services that support reintegration efforts at the micro and macro level.

The present study aims to analyze the social direction of the action of social workers that participate in the Families Agency project, which is developed by the Bank of Providence. Through our study we attempted to verify if the actions taken by social workers in this project merely contribute to the reproduction of capitalist domination, since they support the process of workforce reproduction, emphasizing the promotion / legitimation of compliance, or if they seek to guarantee the service users' rights, perceiving contradictions and promoting ways and professional strategies that enable the resistance to such domination. Furthermore, we sought to see if the professionals' actions were characterized by ambiguity due to the inconsistent way of perceiving the inherent contradictions to the social and institutional reality. Therefore, it was necessary to verify the social direction of this workers' action, ie, the meaning of this action, its ethical-political direction, if it occurs and to what extent is it possible the materialization of the current ethical-political principles of Brazilian Social Work in everyday professional work. This is because, considering the conservatism that seems to characterize the institution, we understand that there may be distinction between the institutional and professional goals, and there is also an expressive tension between the current Ethical-Political Project of the Brazilian Social Work and the professional activity, due to the new configurations of capitalist society that are mediated by neoliberal ideology, which is increasingly related to the professional (neo) conservatism. The research was conducted by the means of interviews with the professionals and, as said, aimed to emphasize the understanding of the social direction, the meaning and implications of the professional practice of social workers participating in the Families Agency project. The analyzed data are also the result of field observations within the occupational space of the social workers interviewed, and also of institutional documents, records and reports. The analysis is based on the objectives of the study, taking as reference the historical and dialectical materialism by Marx.
