Bacon, J. "FE sports lecturer professionalism : 'freedom to play, or, 'do as I say?' : narrative accounts of further education (FE) sports lecturer professionalism from FE institutions in the South West of England." Thesis, University of the West of England, Bristol, 2019. http://eprints.uwe.ac.uk/35602/.

Full text
Abstract:
The primary aim of this research was to investigate how Further Education (FE) Sports Lecturers defined their sense of professionalism with reference to the jobs they did and the environments in which they worked. Individual narratives were generated for the academic years 2014/15, 2015/16 and 2016/17 for five Sports Lecturers from FE institutions in the South West of England. Eight Sports Lecturers from four different FE institutions took part in the research through completing a Survey Monkey online questionnaire and five of these lecturers from two different FE institutions undertook a series of semi-structured qualitative interviews to answer the research questions. Individual narratives were constructed, analysed and discussed. Findings showed that there remained high levels of performativity and accountability in FE institutions and these caused a great deal of pressure and stress for the Sports Lecturers. There were similarities to school-based research where the Sports Lecturers experienced significant gaps between what they were teaching and what they perceived society needed. The Sports Lecturers often had to adapt their methods of delivery to work effectively in their contexts and consequently, they mainly saw their professionalism as an externally imposed, articulated perception of what lay within the parameters of their profession's collective remit and responsibilities. This research also uncovered a new area of research entitled 'competitive mediation' which reflected how the professional practice of the Sports Lecturers was heavily influenced by structure and compliance, but they operated in ways which matched their own values and therefore they were mediating these tensions. It was found that the Sports Lecturers who had played competitive sport, felt that their sporting experiences helped them to develop skills which complemented their professional practice in their FE environments. However, the Sports Lecturers narrowed their curriculum delivery and they taught to the test to achieve good results which they then were happy to compare with their colleagues. These methods of delivery were seen to be a negative consequence of the structures which were determining their practice. Consequently, this research found that the FE sector might be moving further away from proposed democratic models of education and it was predicted that this would be compounded in the future with recent political developments.

Litherland, Benjamin M. "The field and the stage pugilism, combat performance and professional wrestling in England, 1700-1980." Thesis, University of Sussex, 2014. http://sro.sussex.ac.uk/id/eprint/53494/.

Full text
Abstract:
Speaking to a local radio station in the 1960s, with the glitz, glitter and glamour of televised professional wrestling at its height, one old, retired Cumbrian wrestler declared that ‘wrestling…was a game for the field not the stage'. This statement, condensed and potent as it is, could stand in for the questions this thesis asks and seeks to answer: why did wrestling develop as a professional, performed ‘sporting entertainment'? To answer this question, existing theories of social and sports history are combined with cultural studies methods and applied to Pierre Bourdieu's notion of fields. Chapters one and two surveys the birth of a fielded society and the growth of spectator and professional sport as part of a wider cultural field in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Considering many sports during this time had relationships with the theatre, circus and fairground, the seemingly logical expansion of professional sport was closer to that of professional wrestling. Sport, however, did not develop in this way. Chapter three explore the reasons for this and posits that the genesis of the sporting field, demonstrated by the growth of sporting bodies and the perpetuation of amateur ideal, dominated the field. Control of wrestling, however, for various reasons, was not gained in this manner. Chapter four examines the consequences of this when professional wrestling became a fully performed sport in the interwar years. Finally, chapter five assesses the relationship between the sporting field and television in the late twentieth century. Wrestling as a ‘sporting entertainment' is of interest precisely because it displays a ‘discarded possible' of how professional sport may have grown had it not been for the institutions and ideologies active within the field during the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century. It also demonstrates the often precarious nature of fields and concludes that sport's meanings, pleasure and values are not as consistent as are first assumed.

Abstract:
The purposes of the investigation were to determine if status of professional sports and professional athletes increases as male participation increases, if perceived status of 'athlete' increases with participation in sports that contain 'male' attributes, and if gender differences are related to status indicators. Sixty-eight students were administered a status-determinants questionnaire. A one-way ANOVA (gender) and a 2 x 12 ANOVA (gender x sport) were employed to determine status ratings of sports. A 3 x 2 (increase/decrease/no change x gender) Chi square was employed to determine status of sports, perceived masculinity of males/femininity of females, and status of the athlete related to gender attributes of sports.

Abstract:

Gideonsbergs IF (damer) och Västerås SK (herrar).

Abstract:
The aim of this dissertation is to study the conditions of and changes in sociative democracy processes at club level. One sports club is studied, Örebro Sportklubb (ÖSK), from its foundation in 1908 up to 1989. The main sources are club minutes, member magazines and annual reports. Democracy, and its twofolded relation to sport and economy processes, is the main problem area of the study. The specific question is how aspirations for economic effectiveness and sporting success influenced the democracy processes in ÖSK between 1908 and 1989. The Swedish sports movement has been described as a democratic movement. But the same movement has also been portrayed as an undemocratic movement made of men, for men. The study is based on a broad understanding of the democracy concept where issues of representativeness, influence, participation and knowledge are prominent. At a club level, the study is analysing the contents of the Swedish sports movement's democracy and its change during the 1900s. The thesis also illustrates how the pursuit of economic efficiency affected the associative democracy. These efficiencies were visible already in the 1920s, but was deepened during the 1970s. In short, the democratic range decreased, and successful sections became less and less motivated to finance the deficits of other sections. But the increased market orientation did not only represent a threat to the associative democracy. Marketisation and commercialization also preconditioned the democracy. At the club arena (Eyravallen), the members met in the clubhouse and café which, in turn, deepened the social capital and friendships within the club.

Mudege, Solomon Mufudzi. "Factors associated with successful talent development in South African soccer players." Thesis, Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/10948/d1015713.

Abstract:
In recent times, the performances of the South African senior national team (“Bafana Bafana”) have not matched the impressive off-field advancements in South African professional soccer. At the historic 2010 FIFA World CupTM held in South Africa, Bafana Bafana became the first host nation to be eliminated in the first round of the competition. Such disappointments have compelled stakeholders in South African soccer to call for a re-assessment of all structures and programmes which have an impact on the playing abilities of South African players. Of prime importance is the need to obtain a better understanding of talent development in South African soccer. The aim of this research study was to determine the relevance of selected factors associated with successful talent development in South African male professional soccer players competing in the 2008-2009 ABSA PSL season. In order to accomplish the research aims, the literature relating to talent development concepts and models was examined. The literature review identified seven factors which are relevant to talent development in soccer. The empirical study was exploratory, and it utilized a descriptive, non-experimental approach. Data were collected via a 53-item questionnaire, which was designed to evaluate the identified seven factors. The questionnaire was administered to a sample of 56 South African professional soccer players who played for clubs participating in the 2008-2009 season of the ABSA Premier Soccer League. The results obtained from the sample were analysed in terms of their descriptive statistics and confirmatory factor analysis was performed. The following six factors were statistically confirmed as being associated with the successful talent development of the sample: Training Environment, Motivation and Ambitions, Personal Development, Family Support, Cultural Factors and Coaching. These six factors accounted for 58 percent of the overall variance. The questionnaire had a reliability of 0.84, as measured by the Cronbach alpha coefficient. The study concludes that talent development in South African soccer is a multifactorial and complex process. Although the sample size was not suitable for discriminant analysis, theories such as the relative age effect and the „10-year rule‟ may be applicable to South African soccer. This study also adds to the limited body of knowledge on South African soccer, by identifying and scientifically analysing those factors which are associated with successful talent development. As success on the international stage becomes a priority in South African soccer, the identified factors serve as a sound scientific basis in the formulation of improved structures and strategies for perfecting the abilities of young soccer players, and increasing the competitiveness of Bafana Bafana.

Abstract:
This is a study on the incorporation of sporting events in the city of São Paulo between the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th century. Performances related to turf, cycling, and particularly to soccer are reviewed. The dissertation analyzes the historical transition of the individual sports, with bets being placed on disputes among athletic teams, based solely on merit. It also examines the importance of the stadium in terms of sociability, with a special focus on the Velódromo Paulista, a stadium for sports events, which existed in the neighborhood of Consolação between the years of 1895 and 1916. The universe of modern urban culture is related to the transformations which occurred within the elite families of rural origin, some of which demonstrated prominent co-operation in the organization of athletic events. The study drew attention to the role of sports in the process of modernization of urban lifestyle. It also examined the emergence of sports clubs as a civil society organization and the transformation of athletic associations, which originally consisted of boys, into associations for family socialization. The analysis highlighted the role of sports clubs as mediators between private home environments and the political party organizations. By monitoring the historical process of reinterpreting sports ethics imported from Europe, the author notes that soccer was disclosed in urban São Paulo as a conservative social pedagogy and performances took on the role of transmitting moral values upheld by the elite. He also observed the shortcomings of the relationship between the physical education in schools and the informal soccer games which took place throughout the city as well as the patronage of amateur soccer of the time. He revealed the appearance of professionalism covered up by the morale of amateurism. He monitored the tumultuous creation of federal agencies at a regional and national level, and indicated that as of the 1920s, soccer performances gained significant importance in national political relationships as well as with regard to diplomacy among the countries of the Southern Cone of Latin America

Abstract:
Historically, sports in Sweden have been practiced either according to an amateur ideal for the purpose of combating ill-health or and in accordance with the athletes own sports interest. Since its establishment, sport has followed social development and adapted accordingly. When the amateur rule was removed in 1967, the sport underwent a change towards professionalization. It is primarily sports organizations that compete at the highest level and with a focus on team sports that have embraced this professionalization. The professionalization meant that employees in sports organizations were paid a salary and that the athletes could make money from their sports. Development in sport has since continued in line with society and commercialization has become a phenomenon as well as a lasting element that has taken over parts of the power in the sports world. This has created different cultural values in sports.  We now talk about non-profit -, professional - and commercial sports. This study investigates whether these values can work together within an elite organization and what tensions may arise between them. The study is a qualitative case study in which three semi-structured interviews have been conducted. The analysis was based on Schein's organizational culture model, which focuses on the levels of artifacts, espoused beliefs and values and basic underlying assumptions. The result showed that organizational culture is shaped and integrated by the different cultural values.

Abstract:
The recent departure of Czech football clubs participating in the top two competitions for the newly created League of Football Association (LFA) has given rise to a number of questions. This step is generally considered to be a significant step towards emphasising the differences between the professional and amateur areas of football in our country. The goal of this dissertation was to demonstrate the differences and the similar features in the management and leadership of this type of sports organisation on the basis of practical research undertaken in two selected clubs. FC Jablonec nad Nisou from the first division served as an example of the professional sphere, while FC Loko Vltavín was selected as a representative of the amateur game. The findings were then used to compare these two kinds of clubs in relation to various aspects of their complex functioning. General principles and specific features have been drawn from this for both qualitative levels. The results have particularly demonstrated the significant influence of club economics and the competitive environment, which mutually influence and to a certain degree determine the level of all other areas which the people from the club management are involved in.

Abstract:
This study examined professional practice issues in sport psychology such as qualifications, credentialing, graduate training, and the scope of practice in order to address questions about who should be teaching and providing such services. We used frequencies, t-tests, and chi-square analyses to assess trends among licensed psychologists in the subdiscipline of sport psychology. Analyses show that 26.7% (n = 52) reported providing services to individual athletes and 17.9% (n = 35) to teams in which their work focused on directly improving sport performances. Additionally, 58.5% (n = 114) reported providing mental health services to individual athletes and 10.3% (n = 20) to sport teams. These results suggest services provided to individual athletes and groups/teams of athletes seem to emphasize mental health concerns. Regarding supervision, 18.5% (n = 36) indicated they had received supervision related to improving athletes' sport performance and 35.9% (n = 70) for mental health services they had provided. Another 17.5% (n = 34) indicated having provided supervision to other professionals who were working with athletes to improve their sport performance and 40.0% (n = 78) for those who were addressing athletes' mental health. Overall, 26 (13.3%) of the psychologists had published articles concerning sport and performance psychology in scientific journals; men (25.4%) were more likely than women (7.8%) to have done so, X 2 (1) = 11.26, p = .001. Issues related to training, professional involvement, and ethics in this growing field are discussed. Future directions for this research are also explored.

Abstract:
Sexual attraction (SA), as well as sexual (SBVs) and nonsexual boundary violations (NSBVs), have been identified as matters of ethical concern, being viewed as harmful within mental health or counseling relationships. Much of the literature in the area of SA and SBVs has focused on the counselor-client relationship, but it has been investigated only minimally in the field of sport psychology and specifically with regard to sport psychology professionals (SPPs). Because SA, SBVs, and NSBVs between SPPs and their client-athletes seem to be potentially problematic concerns in need of empirical investigation and practical scrutiny, the aim of this study was to examine: (a) the incidence of SBV and NSBV beliefs and behaviors among SPPs; (b) SPPs' feelings regarding SA for and from client-athletes; and (c) SPPs' willingness to seek supervision to manage their SA beliefs and behaviors towards client-athletes. SPPs (n = 365) completed the Survey of Applied Sport Psychologists (SASP) via e-mail or regular mail. As expected, SPPs experienced SA (40.6%) and generally did not experience strong feelings as a result of the SA. However, of the SPPs experiencing SA, 13.5% of males and 13.8% of females engaged in a SBV with a client-athlete. NSBV behaviors and beliefs are also reported. Chi-squared analyses revealed male SPPs engaged in nonsexual touching with their client-athletes more frequently than female SPPs. T-tests suggested ethically trained SPPs were more likely to seek supervision as a result of SA and view certain NSBVs as good professional behavior in comparison to non-ethically trained SPPs. Appropriate supervision and ethical training for SPPs experiencing SA could be helpful in the management of potential future SBV or NSBV behaviors. Implications for SPPs working with athletes, limitations of the present study, and recommendations for future research are discussed.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to examine and analyse the career transitions from amateur to elite level for male soccer players in Swedish elite football clubs and to identify which factors that affects and develops the player linked to this process. Research material has been collected through semi-structured qualitative interviews with professional players in Swedish elite football clubs to answer the research questions of this study. The theoretical framework from which the collected material has been analysed is The holistic athletic career model which provides an opportunity to investigate the phenomen on a multidimensional and holistic way (Wylleman, Reints & De knop, 2013). The results suggests that there are several differences between being an amateur and a professional elite football player in Swedish football clubs. Also, that a career transition from amateur level to professional level for a player is considered being problematic and difficult. The result of this study adds new knowledge to the previous research by identifying significant internal and external factors that are considered crucial for a football players transition to be able to play at a professional elite level within a Swedish elite football club. The most prominent significant factors that are considered to be crucial is a mental strength, the ability to deal with setbacks and a clear target image, as well as support from family, coaches and teammates in the players environment. In this way, this study contributes with a new insight into the subject area which complements the previous research that has previously been studied.

Abstract:
The purpose of this project was to create a business plan for a profitable, self-sustaining, program to build a bridge between physical therapists and fitness professionals. The Quick Fit Program was a new service for the existing business San Luis Sports Therapy. The program was designed to be implemented within each of the company’s physical therapy clinics in California using existing personnel and resources. The Quick Fit Program is one way in which physical therapy practices can diversify the services they offer to keep pace with the changing landscape of healthcare. Clients in the Quick Fit Program would receive an assessment of basic health and fitness during their initial visit. After the assessments, a licensed physical therapist debriefs each client and offers recommendations or referral to a physician or gym program as appropriate. Staff in the Quick Fit Program would also schedule a follow-up appointment three to six months from the date of the initial visit to assess any changes or improvements in health and fitness measures since the initial visit.

Gellock, Jennifer. "Work-Life Factors that Impact Job Burnout and Turnover Intention among Athletic Academic Support Professionals." VCU Scholars Compass, 2019. https://scholarscompass.vcu.edu/etd/5799.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of the current study was to investigate factors in the work environment that impact job burnout among academic support professionals who work with college student-athletes. Specifically, the factors of job control match, fairness march, rewards match, and workload match were explored. Additionally, the extent to which emotional exhaustion and depersonalization had an effect on turnover intention was explored. Job burnout has been found to have negative impacts on professionals in human services professions. The sample consisted of academic advisors and learning specialists affiliated with National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I programs. Results suggest academic support professionals experience a high level of emotional exhaustion related to a mismatch in perceived job control, rewards, and workload. Additionally, higher levels of emotional exhaustion were found to significantly impact turnover intention. Practical solutions that address job mismatches are discussed along with theoretical implications for the person-environment fit framework applied in the context of the sport industry.

Abstract:
In recent years, the area of e-sports has been growing rapidly and has consequentially drawn attention from the general public as well as researchers. However, research in this area still remains sparse, especially concerning the psycho-social work environment of e-sports professionals. This is even more true when referring to research that includes the individual perspective of pro-players. To provide more knowledge in this area, this study aims to explore what psychosocial aspects are mentioned by pro-players in documentary interviews and investigate if the experiences portrayed could be understood using a theoretical perspective by applying the JD-R theory. This study is based on 12 docu-series episodes featuring two League of Legends teams where 10 different pro-players participated. The research sample could both be considered availability sampling, since the data was already available, and purposeful sampling, choosing a sample consisting of pro-players. The episodes were transcribed and then analyzed using qualitative content analysis. Many psycho-social aspects emerged from the analysis, resulting in two higher themes where the first theme “Working as a pro-player” portrays what the profession entails and the second, “The interdependent work”, depicts the experience of being a pro, a teammate and an individual at the same time. By applying the JD-R theory on the aspects mentioned, it was concluded that these experiences indeed could be understood using a theoretical approach, providing incentives to conduct future research in the area. Possible areas of research interest were also presented in relation to this.

Abstract:
Sport psychology professionals (SPPs), like psychologists in general, may cross therapeutic boundaries (e.g., hug a client) and even become sexually attracted to their athlete-clients (ACs). I examined the prevalence of these issues, as well as SPPs' ethical training and use of supervision in relation to them. Participants were 181 SPPs; 92 (50.8%) reported being sexually attracted to one or more of their ACs. In regards to specific behaviors, approximately half (49.4%) reported discussing personal matters unrelated to their (n = 87), whereas far fewer had engaged in sexual behaviors with their ACs, such as discussing sexual matters unrelated to their work (n = 4), and caressing or intimately touching an AC (n = 1). No SPP reported kissing, dating, having sexual intercourse, or engaging in other sexual activities with their ACs. The three most common nonsexual boundary crossings were (a) consulting with an AC in public places (e.g., hotel lobby or practice field; 87.8%), (b) working with an AC at practice (86.2%), (c) working with an AC at a competition (75.0%). Interestingly, few SPPs sought supervision/consultation regarding the attraction, though 83.7% said they would do so if they were attracted in the future. I also examined differences across gender, mental health licensure, and years since graduation in relation to the outcome. Sexual attractions appear to exist between SPPs and their AC and should be discussed during training to normalize the experience and increase the likelihood of them discussing such attractions when they occur. Further, self-reflection and supervision are recommended approaches to managing such feelings and to minimize the chances of harming ACs.

Terricabras, i.

Full text
Abstract:
Muscle injuries account for 1/3 of all injuries suffered by professional football players, and approximately 90% of these injuries are located in the lower extremities. These muscle injuries can cause, depending on the location and severity, a long period of time off from playing; this is why it is important to start with a good diagnosis (which will help with the prognosis of return to play (RTP)), and an optimal treatment and process of sports rehabilitation to ensure rapid return to play (RTP) with minimal risk of reinjury (Jarvinen et al., 2007, Orchard et al., 2005, Ueblacker et al., 2015). Although very advanced imaging techniques (RMN 3T and US) are currently available for the diagnosis of muscle injury, there is no consensus on a system of classification of muscle injury (anatomical location, edema, intramuscular hole “gap”). Localized bioimpedance (L-BIA) has recently become a method to aid in classical diagnostic techniques such as ultrasound (US) and magnetic resonance imaging (RMN). L-BIA at 50 kHz is a non-invasive, low-cost method that quantifies muscle edema (resistance, R) and muscle cell disorganization (reactance, Xc) to quantify damaged soft tissue. This project analyzed from the 2015-2016 season to the 2018-2019 season the measurements of L-BIA at 50 kHz 24 hours after muscle injury, compared with the NMR image, with the aim of improving the clinical diagnosis and prognosis, up to RTP. To do this, three independent studies were performed: 1) The L-BIA values of the uninjured professional football and futsal players of Futbol Club Barcelona were studied to study the symmetry between the 4 major muscle groups (quàdriceps, hamstrings, adductors, and sural triceps) of the lower right and left extremity, and between several moments of the same season. 2) The similarity between L-BIA and RMN results are analyzed in 22 muscle lesions classified according to the muscle gap and the RTP, regardless of their anatomical location. 3) The concordance between L-BIA and RMN of 37 muscle lesions classified according to their anatomical, intratendinous, myotendinous (MTJ) and myofascial (MFJ) location and the corresponding RTP time is analyzed. The results show 1) that there are no statistically significant differences in R and Xc values when comparing the 4 major muscle groups (quàdriceps, hamstrings, adductors, and sural triceps) of the right and left lower extremities, or between various moments of same season, 2) there is a significant reduction (P <0.01) in R and Xc directly related to the severity of muscle injury according to the “gap” and RTP, regardless of their anatomical location, 3) that L-BIA significantly differentiates (P <0.01) MTJ lesions from MFJ lesions, as well as the different degrees of severity of MTJs and their RTP.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study has been to investigate how the deregulation of the agent license has affected football players' experiences of agents in general, the trust in agents and the experience of the agents' competence and professionalism. To gain an understanding of the football players' experiences, the Rational Choice theory was chosen, where the Principal Agent theory was used to explain the results of the study. Previous research that dealt with competence and professionalism in the agent industry, trust and confidence between the player-agent and research on the deregulation of the agent license and the agent regulations were also used to explain the football players' experiences.  To investigate the football players' experiences, semi-structured interviews were conducted with six professional football players who were active in either Allsvenskan, Superettan or in foreign professional leagues by the 2020 season at the latest. Five of the interviews were conducted on Zoom and one through a physical meeting where the recording was performed in the mobile application AVR X. The study shows that the interviewees perceive the agents who were licensed before the deregulation of the agent license and the agent regulations as more professional and competent than agents or intermediaries who became active after the deregulation.  The interviewees who have had agents for longer periods experience greater trust and confidence in agents in general than players who have had longer periods without agents. The study also shows that these players to a greater extent perceive agents as competent enough to trust them to handle their negotiations with clubs and sponsors. On the other hand, most of the interviewed players are negative in regards of signing contracts with agents. The study showed an interesting aspect regarding external influence on the interviewed players' opinions about agents, namely that although they can be influenced by the sports director's opinions but mainly because negative publicity of the agent can lead to bad relationship with the employer and possibly affect the player's career. The interviewed players can be influenced by other players' opinions about the agent, but in the end, their own opinion and relationship with the agent is most important. Media is the external factor that affects the interviewed players' opinions about agents the least.    Key words: deregulation of the agent license, trust, competence, professionalism.

Abstract:
Acessibility is a concept that can be defined in several diferent ways, including a definition that can be linked to the physical environment. The purpose of the essay is to describe how managers in gym in southern Sweden define the word accessibility, describe how professionals in gym in southern Sweden experience their gym accessibility for members with physical disabilities and, what managers in gym in southern Sweden feel that they do to improve accessbility for members with physical disabilities. The study has a qualitative approach where four different managers for four different gyms have been interviewd. To understand the results, the theories of the social model and the crypt theory have been used. The results show that the informants had other associations to the concept avaliability than just connected to the physical enviornment. Furthermore, the results of the interviews show that the managers feel that there are many shortcomings in the gym`s physical environment from an accesibility perspective and that most of the managers work to improve accessibility. The conclusion of te essay highlights that the gym is not an arena that can be said to be accessible to all individuals.

Abstract:
At present, only one in teree Peruvians over 15 years of age performs some type of physical activity, this situation is alarming. It causes people to be prone to contracting chronic diseases such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, cancer, according to Alexandro Saco, director of Health Promotion of the Minsa. It should be noted that those who suffer from the aforementioned diseases are at risk by contracting covid-19. To the aforementioned, it is added that the constant exhalations due to effort during physical activity cause a more favorable environment for coronavirus infections within gyms. That is why the Peruvian Government was forced to close the gyms. However, in Peru, according to the latest IHRSA report (2019), there are 1,818 gyms and training centers, which are currently closed, affecting around 20,000 sports professionals. Based on this, “HEALTHY MIND” was born, a business idea from a group of students from the Peruvian University of Applied Sciences. M.Com. (Taxation)
South African sportsmen and women (from now on collectively referred to as sportsmen) are currently facing new and exciting opportunities that were previously not available during the years of international sanctions. Opportunities such as international competition, meetings and extensive overseas tours have become the order of the day. However, to be able to compete at international level, means that sportsmen have to employ an ever increasing amount of resources to their sport, which results in the sport being transformed from a hobby or leisure time activity to a semi-profession. Due to this transformation, sportsmen are demanding compensation for the effort put into their sport. Despite strict amateur rules ample compensation is received by the sportsmen, which brings us to the question of what would the taxation implications be of such compensation received by amateur sportsman as a result of their participation in their respective sports. This study is aimed at answering this question, with specific reference to the two major so-called amateur sports, namely athletics and rugby. The Income Tax Act of 1962 makes no mention of income received by a sportsman specifically from the participation in any sport. To be able to answer the question reference has to be made to law reports and the general interpretation of the Act, and with the application of the same principles to the compensation received by a sportsman. The first important factor to determine is at what stage the sportsman crosses the proverbial Rubicon, in other words at what stage does the sport change from a leisure time activity to a profession. Various criteria relating to the income received have to be considered, amongst which are the following: - An amount in cash or otherwise - Received by, or accrued to a person - During the year or period of assessment - Excluding receipts and accruals of a capital nature - From a source within or deemed to be within the Republic of South Africa. Should the sportsman receive any compensation which complies to all the above mentioned criteria, then this compensation would be considered to be 'gross income' as specified in the Income Tax Act (Act 58 of 1962)(hereafter refered to as 'the Act'), and is the sportsman obliged to declare this compensation as gross income. As a result of the strict amateur rules, sportsmen are continuously looking for ways to obtain a commensurate compensation which is related to the amount of time, money and effort put in by them in the participation of their sport. One such an instrument is the use of trusts. This can be an effective way of earning a commensurate income from sport but it is important for the sportsman to keep track of the taxation implications of these instruments, especially as it is expected from the sportsman to declare all income received or accrued to him during the year of assessment.

Abstract:
The introduction of the 2002 King Report on Corporate Governance for South Africa has placed new emphasis on companies to attain higher and more consistent standards of governance. Based on widely recognised and supported governance frameworks it also inspired a rising expectation of accountability and transparency across every aspect of society and also other types of organisations. Through the establishment of the guidelines found in the King II Report the doors have been opened to sport and its various bodies to draw from the experience of corporations and to make use of some of these guidelines in the development of their own guidelines aimed at their own respective needs and purposes. The sports industry and especially its governing bodies need guidelines for proper governance due to the raised level of interest and impact of sport lately. As a result of the corporatisation of sport and increased professionalism, a greater need for proper business management and governance models within sport becomes apparent. The government has also placed renewed emphasis on the need for sport to become more professional in the manner in which it governs itself. If the sports industry cannot achieve this by means of proactive voluntary action and self-regulation, it runs the risk of legislative regulation, which threatens to undermine the sanctity of flexibility and self-regulation which has been central in the development of sport. This study presents a first attempt to determine the levels of non-adherence by national sports federations of South Africa to the principles of best practice governance, identified as the pillars of good governance. These principles are taken from the King II Report, and also the guidelines developed during the first Governance-in-Sport conference. This, a national study in which all South African national sports federations were approached and asked to participate, carries the support of Sport and Recreation South Africa as well as the South African Sports Commission.

The following internship report emerged in the context of the master’s degree in Physical Education Teaching in the Elementary and Secondary Cycles of the Faculty of Sports Sciences and Physical Education of the University of Coimbra. The Pedagogical Internship is presented as the last stage of the physical education (PE) teacher, where the intern professor has the possibility to apply in real context all the knowledge acquired along his/her academic career, besides having the possibility to perform all the tasks that are inherent to the teaching process. Thereby, this report results from the work developed along the last academic year (2018/2019) during the Pedagogical Internship carried out at Quinta das Flores Elementary and Secondary School, with the 10th A class of the Science and Technology course. As mentioned before, the Pedagogical Internship is the last stage of the academic path related to the education of the PE teacher, intended to sharpen our knowledges and increased our range of skills, becoming crucial to deeply reflect on them. Therefore, the following report intends to describe all the activities and tasks performed, as well as make a reflection to present the lessons learned. Hence, this report is divided in three chapters. The first chapter introduces a practice contextualization, which includes a characterization of the school, the PE Disciplinary Group and the 10th class. The second part of this work subsists on a reflective analysis of the teaching-learning process management (acting in the dimensions of pedagogical intervention, evaluation process, etc.), as well as all the tasks performed throughout the internship. Finally, the third chapter explore the problematic of “The physical sports activity of parents and children and the achievement in Physical Education”.

Abstract:
Between 1995 and 2008, the portuguese basketball had for the first time a professional competition named Liga Profissional de Basquetebol (LPB). The birth of the Basketball Clubs League (LCB) in 1989, with the goal of managing the championship and constituted by the sport main teams, was the beginning of this process. At the same time, the portuguese State introduced in 1990 the framework law of sports (LBSD), a new legislation that included an approach on professional competition. Several legal framewoks on the regulation of subjects as the sports federations, Sports Sociaties, work contracts and professional competitions in general, ensued in that decade. The first years of the LPB are of relative success but also of incessant adaptation to the new laws and consequent revisions. The struggle to contextualize the legislation to the basketball reality, and the problems originating from the LCB management, resulted in several incidents that undermined this project and eventually lead to the end of the LPB. It’s the goal of this PhD to understand the role of the Portuguese State in the fate of the professional league and also its political agenda in the making of a new legislation, resorting to the help of the Pluralist Perspective. On the other hand, the Advocacy Coalition Framework will be applied to study the political debate between the main institutions of basketball that added to the conclusion of this narrative.

Shrestha, Nipun. "Increasing Physical Activity and Reducing Sedentary Behaviour in Mental Health Professionals." Thesis, 2020. https://vuir.vu.edu.au/41833/.

Full text
Abstract:
Clinicians with a high level of physical activity (PA) are more likely to recommend PA to their clients, compared with those with a low level of PA. Interventions to increase PA and reduce sedentary behaviour (SB) among mental health professionals may, therefore, indirectly benefit their clients with mental disorders. However, there is limited evidence on the effectiveness of interventions aimed at increasing PA and reducing SB among mental health professionals in changing their attitudes towards and practices in recommending more PA and less SB to their clients. Therefore, four studies were conducted as a part of this PhD thesis, to address this overarching research question. A critical evaluation of interventions for increasing PA (Chapter 4) and systematic reviews and meta-analyses of interventions for reducing SB (Studies 1 and 2) provided information about the effectiveness of various PA and SB interventions among adults. The literature identified that for PA promotion, there is evidence on the short-term effectiveness of interventions based on counseling/support, and health promotion messages/information, but evidence on the long-term effectiveness of these interventions is limited. The systematic reviews also found that the use of sit-stand desks at work, restricting the use of TV devices in leisure time, and educational interventions outside workplace were effective strategies in reducing SB in the short term, however evidence on the effectiveness of these interventions in the long term is limited. Digital interventions, such as a prompts on the computer screen, and the use of wearable devices were found to be increasingly popular interventions for increasing PA and reducing SB. Evidence on the effectiveness of PA and SB interventions specifically among mental health professionals is scarce, but it can be assumed that most of the interventions that are effective in the general population of adults will also be effective among mental health professionals. Study 3 explored attitudes and practices of mental health professionals in recommending more PA and less SB to their clients. Data were collected using a modified Exercise in Mental Illness Questionnaire in a sample of 17 Australian mental health professionals. Additionally, in focus group discussions, 10 mental health professionals provided in-depth information about their practices, facilitators, and perceived barriers in recommending more PA and less SB. It was found that PA and SB counselling in the mental health setting could be improved by: including training on PA and SB counselling in formal education and continued professional training for mental health professionals; implementing interventions to increase PA and reduce SB among mental health professionals themselves; and ensuring support from an exercise or PA promotion specialist as a part of a multi-disciplinary approach to mental health care. Study 4 investigated the effects of an intervention designed to increase PA and reduce SB among mental health professionals on their attitudes towards and practices in recommending more PA and less SB to their clients. The intervention was informed by the findings of the Chapter 4, Study 1 and Study 2, and it consisted of a single group-based behaviour change session, which included a presentation of various strategies to increase PA and reduce SB and goal setting according to the SMART goals approach. An information booklet containing 24 strategies to increase PA and reduce SB was also provided to the participants. They also received reminder texts/calls during the following three weeks of the intervention. There was no significant overall change in PA and SB among mental health professionals, but the intervention had a positive effect on their attitudes towards recommending more PA and less SB to their clients. The mental health professionals who increased their own PA during the intervention (compared to those who did not) significantly increased the frequency of recommending more PA (p= 0.009) and less SB (p= 0.005) to their clients. Two post-intervention focus group discussions with the participants suggested that the intervention positively influenced their confidence in recommending more PA and less SB to their clients and provided them with pragmatic strategies to include in their practice. The findings of the studies included in this thesis suggest that a relatively simple intervention has the potential to improve mental health professionals’ attitudes towards and practices in recommending more PA and less SB to their clients. The intervention could be scaled up to promote more PA and less SB within mental health settings, with potential benefits for mental health professionals and their clients.

Abstract:
This study was concerned with determining the competencies required and the subsequent education needed for the implementation of inclusive practices within the park and recreation industry. With 3.6 million people or 19 percent of its total population possessing a disability, Australia is experiencing a transformation of its programs and practices as they relate to the inclusion of people with disabilities. Especially noteworthy is the impact that inclusion is having on the park and recreation industry. In order for park and recreation professionals to achieve a cutting edge standard of service delivery to people of all abilities, a study was undertaken to determine the skills, ability and knowledge that are needed to ensure inclusive practices. Parks and Leisure Australia agreed, through its National Board of Directors, for its members to serve as participants in this study. The data analysed to obtain the results of the study was gathered from a questionnaire that was mailed to a random sample of eight hundred Parks and Leisure Australia members. It sought information in the following areas: • The importance of competencies to park and recreation professionals' jobs for including people with disabilities. • The level of perceived competence park and recreation professionals possess for including people with disabilities. • The professional development needed by park and recreation professionals for implementation of inclusive practices. This study examined the results of a needs assessment of Parks and Leisure Australia members and provides a list of recommendations for continuing education programs that will assist the park and recreation industry to break down existing barriers to inclusive practice. The results of this study will provide important opportunities for the enhancement of the professional development requirements of modern day park and recreation professionals and the promotion of the rights of people with disabilities and their families.
