Abstract:
The Olympic Games were not the only major sporting event in ancient Greek civilisation. The Nemean, Pythian and Isthmian Games were held simultaneously. After the revival of the Olympic Games in 1896, modern Olympic sport has passed a difficult, albeit not so long-term path. But even earlier, around the middle of the XIX century, professional sports began to form in the developed countries of Europe and the United States. The appearance of professional athletes, both in the ancient world and in modern history, was essentially the result of those significant changes that occurred in the economic, social and political aspects of human life at the stages of its development and the evolution of sports competitions. It can be argued that professional sports (both in ancient and modern times) arose as a particular human activity, the content of which was sports. However, the problem of amateurs and professionalism in modern Olympic sports and the Olympic movement was one of the most significant in the context of introducing Olympic ideals into the life of society, solving the problem of “fair play” and allowing athletes to participate in major international competitions (Olympic Games, World Championships, etc.).

Abstract:
Today, elite athletes form an important social group, and the non-sport facets of their lives matter as much as their sports performances. However, there has been little empirical research on the lifestyles of elite athletes. Therefore, this study aimed to develop knowledge about the Iranian elite athletes’ lifestyle. The study was conducted with a qualitative approach in two phases. Glaserian grounded theory was used in the first phase, and thematic analysis was used in the second phase. Participants of the first phase included 19 sports experts, such as sports sociologists, sports psychologists, and sports coaches, who were selected by purposive and snowball sampling methods for holding unstructured in-depth interviews. The data were simultaneously analyzed using a set of open, theoretical, selective coding and memos. The codes were grouped into three different categories with different natures. The emerged theory advanced our understanding of the lifestyle shaping structures of elite athletes, lifestyle indicators, and even professionalization of their lifestyles. According to the results, the Iranian elite athletes’ lifestyles include indicators, such as professional mindset, competencies, life vision, financial literacy, responsibility, consumption, leisure, personal issues, and religious behavior. Subjects of the second phase were 44 Iranian athletes in the national levels who participated voluntarily in the study. The data were analyzed by thematic analysis method, and lifestyles typologies were identified. Based on results, five dominant lifestyles among the Iranian elite athletes were identified: consumerist, easy going, socially useful, profit-oriented, and professional. Finally, the features of each lifestyle were discussed.

Abstract:
This study aimed to investigate the relationship between the level of sports coaching professionalism exhibited by the PE instructors and the sports adaptability of students. Profile of the student respondents, their assessment on their instructors’level of sports coaching professionalism, their current level of sports adaptability, differences in their assessments when their profile is taken as test factor, and the relationship between the instructors’level of sports coaching professionalism and the students’level of sports adaptability were also determined. The questionnaire was administered to a sample of 378 students. The result indicates that instructors exhibited a high level of sports coaching professionalism as assessed by the student respondents. And students exhibited a high level of sports adaptability based on their own assessment. Moreover, the result indicates that the level of sports coaching professionalism of instructors in terms of specialized training, exclusivity, adherence to a code of ethics, acquisition of specific credentials, and coach-student relationships were found to be significantly correlated to a very high degree with the students’level of sports adaptability specifically in terms of environmental adaptability, practice adaptability, perceptual-cognitive skills, and psychological resilience. This is taken to mean that the level of sports coaching professionalism of instructors can have a great impact on the students’level of sports adaptability. The findings of this study helped the researcher on the proposed development plan to further enhance the role of professional sports coaching in improving sports adaptability among the students.

Abstract:
The under-representation of media coverage of women’s sports has been a long-standing phenomenon, which can also be observed in Poland (Dziubiński, Organista and Mazur 2019; Jakubowska 2015; Kluczyńska 2011). One of the possible reasons for less information on women’s sports is a small number of female sports journalists. Due to the lack of Polish research on female sports journalists, the authors of this article aimed at analyzing their beliefs about women’s sports and the under-representation of media coverage of women’s sports in the Polish media. The analysis has shown that the female journalists perceive women’s sports as inferior to men’s sports and are not in favor of increasing the amount of information about women’s sports. The authors point to the socialization into sport, the professional socialization of the research participants, their minority status in the profession as well as their perception of masculinity, femininity, and professionalism in journalism as possible reasons for the way in which women’s sport is perceived by them.

Abstract:
Revealing the status of sports in State of Puntland-Somalia, this article presents a new information and insights, in which of its kind has not presented before that reflects the reality and can be generalized to rest of Somalia at all. The study employed qualitative analysis of the FGDs and a semi-structured KII, collection of documented materials and observations that were participated in 39 (30 by FGDs, 9 by interview) sports community aged 25-65 years. Generally, the respondents validated the hypothesis of the study: Sports in Puntland is no just beyond a physical exercise by providing more information about the kinds of sports, sports clubs, their management, capacities; professionalism; governance; financial situation and source of revenue, sports facilities and the legal frameworks that shape their functionalities administratively and politically and other key challenges sports club encounter. The study found that sports in Puntland is administratively and politically failure because sport activities are outright amateurism-oriented rather than professionalism. Moreover, sports science as a disciple is not taught as academic programmes nor as a physical education in schools or as subject mainstreamed in the school curriculum. The study also uncovered that sport in Puntland is suffering for lacking technical capacity in sports management and inadequate and insufficient financial support. It seems that the government has no interest in sports in general because there are no governing documents in place, for example, sports policy, sports act, strategic plan and fundraising strategy. The only sport facility available in Puntland is soccer field owned and administered by the state government ministry in charge of sports. The study also revealed the sports in Puntland is just for physical exercise, and the only game performed in tournament format is a football and it is played by male, and held once in a blue moon.

Abstract:
The key point of this paper is to analyze professionalism in professional sports through Hanbiza's philosophy and apply it to the case of Hiddink, who achieved the myth of advancing to the semifinals of the 2002 World Cup. Hiddink is a professional coach of a professional soccer team, so the analysis of his soccer philosophy and attitude can soon lead to a professional coach's understanding of professionalism. The way athlete are treated is different depending on the professional coach, so what can't be defined as the answer. For Hiddink, he expected the best results by dominating the professional athlete through strong leadership and then placing them in the right place. This is Hiddink's professionalism. Hiddink's professionalism can be found to be similar in many ways to Hanbiza's philosophy. Hanbiza tried to take control of his subjects through Rule(法), Absolute Authority(勢), and Tacit Art(術) and Hiddink trained the athlete within the range of breaking the set rules. Hanbiza criticized Confucianism's paternalism, and Hiddink tried to eliminate things like personal connections and seniority that prevented victory. Therefore, although their interests and times are different, they resemble much of the similarity of the environment, the purpose pursued, and the way they pursue it. This paper compares and analyzes the philosophy of Hanbiza, who has professional director Hiddink's professionalism, and seeks to be different from that. The approach took the form of applying Hiddink's professionalism after organizing the main concepts of Hanbiza, and secured the persuasion of the argument by presenting concrete evidence of major events in his autobiography. In conclusion, it was possible to analyze Hiddink's professionalism through Hanbiza's philosophy, and through it, it was also possible to confirm the possibility of systematizing the professionalism of professional coaches.

Abstract:
A new professional netball competition in 2017 was part of a long-awaited boost for women’s sport in Australia. Netball has a significant footprint across the country, being the nation’s largest female participation team sport, and the national team is the reigning world champion. However, the sport has traditionally been underrepresented in both sports media and academic research. The new league was scheduled on free-to-air television after a landmark broadcast deal and the rise in media coverage reflected the growing commercial and public interest in female sport. As an example of this changing environment, it is important to examine what the coverage of women’s netball involves. This descriptive study utilises a content analysis to explore the newspaper sports reporting of the first season of the Super Netball League. Specifically, it measures the amount and tone of coverage, the types of stories and descriptions employed in articles, including mentions of men’s sport. Data have been collected from 703 articles from 15,335 stories in newspaper sports sections of nine national, metropolitan and regional publications. While newspaper coverage of netball was comparable with other sports in terms of professionalism and content, there was still only a small amount of stories.

Abstract:
Context:Professionalism education is essential for the professional development and workplace readiness of allied health care students across the globe, but it presents a pedagogical challenge for educators. Students' understanding of professionalism varies at different educational stages and across different disciplines. Objective:To conceptualize professionalism education, with a particular focus on the sports environment, and to apply pedagogical frameworks to professionalism education in this field. Background:Traditional approaches to teaching professionalism have focused on role models; however, poor role modeling and the “hidden curriculum” present a threat to student professional development. Specific challenges to learning professionalism become apparent in the sports environment where students are exposed to cultures and practices that may be discordant with what is taught in the classroom.Synthesis:The idea of threshold concepts provides a useful pedagogical framework for conceptualizing the challenge of learning professionalism for students and can help to uncover the hidden curriculum. The evolving professional curriculum provides a framework for student professional development, focusing on developing students as reflective practitioners, skilled communicators, and collaborative team members. Students need to learn the skill of reflective practice, which can be facilitated through structured reflective models, reflective journal writing, and critical reflective group discussions. Creating opportunities for authentic reflection and discussion can facilitate students linking theory to real-world practice and help to make sense of their experiences.Recommendation(s) and Conclusion(s):Pragmatic recommendations for curriculum planning, teaching, and learning activities; stakeholder engagement; and research are proposed to develop professionalism education in the sports environment and to mitigate some risks presented by the hidden curriculum.

Abstract:
Objective of the study: This study aims to investigate the characteristics of the networks of volleyball teams in Brazilian context, in amateur and professional level.Methodology/Approach: This research adopted an interpretive paradigm, in which six Brazilian volleyball teams were studied. The techniques of data collection were qualitative and encompassed interviews, analysis of information available in the press and on websites and observation.Originality/Relevance: Prior literature has not investigated in-depth with the lens of the networks theory, the sports organizations at an amateur and professional level, considering the firms’ life cycle. To address this gap, considering that, similar to the life cycle of firms, amateurism and professionalism are specific strategic contexts.Main results: Our findings indicated that actor’s of team’s networks could be divided into two groups, one linked to sports and other to administrative activities. Additionally, teams’ networks have in common the fact that paid team members perform activities related to the sport itself.Theoretical/Methodological contributions: The fact that Superliga B has more collaborations obtained by personal contacts, while Superliga A teams build a more calculated network, meet the propositions made in this study and are aligned to the general idea of the work of Hite and Hesterly (2001) about changes in firm’s network and firm’s life cycle. Social contribution/for management: The main implications for management indicated that, whether companies or volleyball teams, should align their networks with the current life cycle stage. If a volleyball team plans to become professional, it should be aware of the need to adapt the network to a new division.

Abstract:
The aim of this study is to reveal the effect of career barriers and presenteeism behaviors of physical education and sports teachers on teacher professionalism through a structural equation model. The hypotheses presented because of the literature review were tested with the fictional model. The sample of the study consists of a total of 411 physical education and sports teachers, who work in Ankara. As data collection tools, the Teachers’ Career Barriers Scale, the Stanford Presenteeism Scale and the Teacher Professionalism Scale were used in the research. In the analysis of the data, the theoretically created model was tested through a structural equation model. Considering the findings obtained from the research, it can be stated that the participants are faced with career barriers, that they exhibit their presenteeism behaviors at a reasonable level, and that the professionalism level is above average. On the other hand, it was concluded that male participants encountered more career barriers and displayed more presenteeism behavior, while female participants had a higher professionalism level than that of male participants. In addition, it was determined that administrative barriers affect teacher professionalism, while presenteeism behaviors do not have an impact on professionalism level.

Abstract:
This article examines National Basketball Association Commissioner David Stern’s press conference on November 21, 2004, in response to the brawl between the Detroit Pistons and Indiana Pacers 2 days earlier, during which he announced the suspensions of nine players. Specifically, I illuminate the ways the tropes of authority and discipline converged to fashion a rhetorical site of absolute professionalism that profoundly altered understandings of race, masculinity, and power. Stern’s prepared remarks and verbal exchanges with reporters, I contend, invite a reconsideration that examines more closely the cocktail of violence, authority, professionalism, and genuine moral struggle that plays out within the text. If that cocktail was tinged with putative racism and masculine domination, Stern’s presser (i.e., the full press conference) challenges scholars of sport to reflect upon the complex affective dynamics of institutional leadership and the obligations of professionalism, dynamics overlooked in recent analyses of the brawl and its aftermath. These dynamics present a compelling heuristic with which to “work through” our social anxiety over morality and sports.

Abstract:
Power sports have always been very popular among schoolchildren and students, servicemen and, especially, cadets of military institutions of higher education. Abstract:
Nelson Paillou can be considered a major sports leader of the second half of 20th century France. He was president of the French Handball Federation from 1964 to 1982, vice-president and eventually president of the French National Olympic and Sports Committee (CNOSF) from 1971 to 1993, and a key person in the foundation of the French association for violence-free sport and fair play. Based on printed sources and on personal as well as institutional archives, this article questions the role Paillou played in the development of French sport. First, Paillou worked to introduce and disseminate handball in France, and he developed a policy to enable masses of people to learn to play handball across the country. As such, he targeted the French youth and founded a national executive for handball technique in order to structure the supervision of players of all levels, from initiation up to the elite level. Second, Nelson Paillou also contributed to the recognition and visibility of handball in France and at European and international levels. He developed a significant communication policy and assured a remarkable presence at all handball events in order to reinforce his choices in terms of management and diffusion of the game. Finally, it appears that during the second half of the 20th century, Paillou, who strongly supported the ideals of Pierre de Coubertin, emerged as a promotor of humanist values in sport and in handball. His position against sponsors and some kind of professionalism was overcome with difficulties but it was necessary to open French handball to the international field. Paillou presented himself as an ambiguous French sports leader who sometimes took contradictory decisions. However, Paillou’s resolutions reflected the choices of an opportunistic leader in front of the transformation of sport in a period marked by the arrival of show business and professionalism.

Abstract:
In recent years, virtual sports or ‘eSports’ have grown exponentially both recreationally and at the professional level. eSports comprise several regulated video games played competitively, using electronic platforms. Some eSports competitions present a structure comparable to traditional sports, and eSports players, even with major skills and mental focus, need preparation and training to thrive. However, little is known about the demands of eSports competitions and continuous training. As the popularity and stakes rise, concerns about the health and emerging risks of eSports participation might arise. Indeed, in the absence of proper descriptive data about the specific characteristics of the eSports population (including factors such as screen time, physical activity, overuse injuries or training environment), effective prevention and care cannot be developed nor provided. Therefore, quality healthcare and prevention strategies are needed. In the current viewpoint, we argue that those involved with Sports Science and Medicine should lead the discussion and reflect on the health effects of eSports participation, providing scientifically-based arguments to better answer to the current eSports professionalism.

Abstract:
U.S. sports operations have been described as newsroom “toy departments,” at least partly because of their deviation from journalistic norms. Recently, however, more attention has focused on issues of ethics and professionalism; the failure of sports journalists to adequately cover steroid use in Major League Baseball has also directed critical attention to their roles and motives. This study, through a telephone survey of journalists in U.S. newsrooms, examines sports reporters’ practices, beliefs, and attitudes in regard to ethics and professionalism and how their ethics and practice relate. Results indicate that reporters’ attitudes toward issues such as voting in polls, taking free tickets, gambling, and becoming friends with sources are related to their views of public-service or investigative journalism. In addition, friendships with sources are linked to values stereotypically associated with sports as a toy-department occupation. These results suggest that adherence to ethical standards is linked to an outlook that embraces sports coverage as public service.

Abstract:
Abstract Previous literature within applied sport psychology offers little detailed discussion regarding the personal qualities of sport psychology practitioners and the impact of these qualities on practice. This paper presents an exploration of the views of sport physicians regarding the personal characteristics and qualities of applied sport psychologists deemed necessary for effective practice. Five UK-based physicians and one Head of Medical Services, working in a range of elite and professional sports, were interviewed about their experience and perceptions of working with sport psychologists. The interview transcripts were content analysed and trustworthiness criteria applied. Four key themes emerged from the data, labelled ‘Personal qualities’, ‘Relationship Building’, ‘Professionalism in Practice’, and ‘Similarities between Psychologist and Physician’. The findings within each theme offered interesting insights into the impact of personal qualities on effective sport psychology practice. This study extends the existing literature on sport psychologists’ characteristics and effectiveness and offers new insights into their personal qualities and how these interact with the practice environment. The findings supported the growing emphasis within the field on the importance of the person behind the practitioner. Suggestions are offered with reference to the need to consider how literature from counselling psychology and medical training could assist the development of practice and education and training in sport psychology.

Abstract:
The aim of the article is to show the role of sport in American society against the background of a very important—for many reasons—period of great social transformation in the United States, one which visibly gathered pace in the 1920s. The author presents different aspects of popular culture, which was in full bloom on account of the following factors: the joy after World War I, a sense of optimism, the development of the economy and industry, the growth of big cities, and the greater affluence of the citizens. The analysis of that unusual decade corroborates the role of sport and its great power of influence on society. In an age when technology and mass production had robbed experiences and objects of their uniqueness, sports provided some of the unpredictability and drama that people craved when looking for romance and adventure. The reasons for the popularity of sport in the USA are presented, as well as the major sports diciplines and heroes of American sport who, in a time when mass production seemed to be making individuals less significant, met with a favorable response — people clung to the heroic personalities of sports figures. The analysis of the beginnings of professionalism in sport, the beginnings of organized support, and sports broadcasting, leaves no doubt as to the significance of the period. As the article demonstrates, it was a time of rapid and profound transformation in the realm of sport. Every serious examination of phenomena in contemporary American sport—and this is also true in the case of other countries—without a knowledge of the specificity of sport in the 1920s, would be far from perfect.
