Abstract:
The book provides a window onto online music instruction in higher education with the aim of helping music professors successfully integrate online teaching into their pedagogical repertoire. It highlights commonalities between online and face-to-face teaching, presents a theoretical framework for online learning, and provides practical models and techniques from professors teaching online in various music disciplines. Part I reviews the status of online learning in general and in music, identifies some similarities and differences between face-to-face and online teaching, presents standards and principles for online instruction, explores the development of an online teaching persona, and examines pedagogical characteristics of effective online teaching, including signature pedagogies of the music disciplines. Part II focuses on the lived online curriculum. It features online teaching experiences in applied music, music theory, music history/musicology, music appreciation, and music education provided by professors teaching online in those disciplines. Part III summarizes lessons from online practitioners, presents an action plan for moving forward with online music instruction, and looks to the future of online instruction in music.

Abstract:
Music is acknowledged as an arts medium with a universal and timeless potential to influence our behavior and emotions. As international research about the effects of music on well-being expands it is timely to consolidate and report the gains in the profession of music therapy through this firstOxford Handbook of Music Therapy. With a foreword by Professor Colwyn Trevarthen (Emeritus, University of Edinburgh) this handbook provides an overview of some populations who are served in music therapy, with information about the contexts in which practitioners work. These include mental health services, hospitals, education programmes, and rehabilitation services. The people who come to music therapy either through self-referrals or by referral from a practitioner or service are described in detail by practitioner researchers most of whom are qualified at doctoral level. A range of chapters from internationally recognized experts has resulted in a substantial multidisciplinary, and pluralistic account of recent advances and applications in music therapy. The handbook presents an overview of many of the models and approaches that have developed in the field since its inception. Many of these chapters were written by the founders of the methods. Multiple perspectives to practice are honored in this text, with music therapy predominantly described as a relational therapeutic practice throughout.

Abstract:
This chapter, written creatively as a scripted conversation between a professor and a doctoral student, asks how researchers might study music-making in a plethora of community music settings using arts-based methods. On the surface, arts-based educational research (ABER), art-based research (ABR), creative analytical practices (CAP), and arts inquiry (AI), may seem one and the same, but there are distinctive historical and theoretical nuances between them. We crafted this composition in a reflexive manner with theory and research embedded in the scripted conversation to explore these nuances. We point towards the conclusion that music communities, where participants are actively engaged, are well suited to inquiry through methods that include creative ways of representing and understanding both music and learning. In a conversational way, we explore distinctions, contexts, possibilities, problems, and the power of engaging arts-based research in the study of community music-making.
