Abstract:
Construção do Eu Professor; 2.
Introduction: Being a teacher is to be in constant process of construction as a person, from internal and external resources that are arranged in educational and social spaces. Abstract:
The aim of this study was to understand the perspectives of the nursing teacher in the technical teaching, considering work and professional identity, taking into account the social-demographical variables and emphasizing the multi-contextualization of this practice. To this end, this qualitative research was based on a descriptive and exploratory study. We have chosen, as subjects of this research, all the nursing teachers in the Paula Souza State Center of Technical Education, from the 40 cities in the state of São Paulo which offer the Nursing technical course. For better operating, the data collecting was divided in two parts. In the first, we have obtained through semi-structured interview 213 responses from the subjects, or 62,8 percent. In the second part of the study, we sent to 40 teachers, one of each School Unit, fourteen open questions related to the pedagogical aspects of the nursing technical teaching. We received 28 responses, which is 70 percent of the researched subjects. We have concluded that the nursing teacher is seriously compromised to his or her role, making every effort to assume integrally the teaching function, despite some blank spaces in the pedagogical basis that would allow the teacher to deal with the constant changes and the technological evolution in the globalized world. The teacher’s professional identity is singular and continually built, depending on his or her personal life story, background knowledge and efforts to be always seeking for improvement as a professional and as a human being. Thus, the nursing teacher’s identity transformation is permanent as he or she tries to innovate in his or her practice in the social reality context.

Abstract:
This is a study about The meaning of continuing education for high-school-level professional nursing program teachers. The general objective of the research was to understand the meaning of continuing education for high-school-level professional nursing program teachers, and the specific objectives were: to identify teachers perception of continuing education; to identify facilitating factors and barriers teachers face in pursuing continuing education. In the study, we considered continuing education as an important tool for teachers improvement in the teaching and learning process, which contributes to a broad development and allows him/her to transform him/herself, his/her group and the community where he/she works. With regard to the methodology, this is an exploratory/descriptive study that uses the qualitative research approach. The technique used to analyze the results was based on Bardin. The study was developed at a private High-School-Level Professional Nursing School located on the East side of São Paulo, which is run by a religious entity. The study subjects were 10 nursing teachers who are members of the schools faculty. Data were collected through interview with an open question, which was recorded and transcribed in full. Four categories resulted from respondents answers: the importance of continuing education for professional nursing teachers; teachers perception of continuing education; facilitators to continuing education; and barriers to continuing education. We believe that teachers continuing education is the result of collective action, with moments where the teacher is able to know him/herself and reflect on him/herself and the others. This will enable a participatory education, with quality in the teaching and learning process, which will reflect on his/her relationship with the students, the other teachers and management

Abstract:
This research has as main objective to analyze the daily life of the nurse teacher in a technical nursing course in a state public technical school. For this purpose, we sought to identify the difficulties in teaching practice pointed by the nurse teacher in technical education, analyze the resources they use in face of difficulties and analyze the solutions presented before the challenges encountered. This is a qualitative research, with dialectical approach, and the theoretical background of cultural-historical approach of Vygotsky. It was developed through focal groups with eleven teachers at a public technical school in the countryside of São Paulo state. Teachers were divided into two groups, each group had three meetings for discussions which were recorded on audio and later transcribed. The results constitute five thematic units: Teacher Training; Planning; Teacher-Student relationship; Do versus Know: Historical Construction of Nursing and working conditions; and Redefining the pedagogical practice. The results point to the importance of teacher education in nursing performance of nursing professionals from the technical area. Situations that hinder the process of teaching learning were identified, and during the meetings, participants also brought proposals to overcome the conflicts through group interaction, highlighting the creation of an important space for reflection, discussion and analysis of the teachers\' everyday lives. The results can help teachers and coordinators of technical courses in nursing in their practices, as far as they show that the best possibilities for transformations involve teachers themselves, their experiences, their reflections, allied to the study and new perspectives. Any desired change in the area must be thought of involving professional teachers, must be taken from them and with them, adding it to new knowledge

Thus, the guiding questions of this research are: How does the nurse become a teacher? How does the nurse teacher relates to the university teaching? Based on these questions, this study has the following objectives: to understand, from the perception of surveyed nurses, how they became teachers; analyze the nurse's entry into higher education teaching; and check, from the perception of the surveyed teachers, their teaching practices. For this, qualitative research was used, which led to a literature study of Nursing and Education, specifically considering the historical context and the legislation of the two areas. As far as data collection is concerned, a field research was conducted in two public higher education institutions, besides the selection of research subjects - ten nursing teachers - to carry out a semi-structured interview. In the data analysis, were listed four categories, which were the following: identification with teaching from experience; the relationship between theory and nursing practice in teaching practice; the pedagogical foundation and the identity of the nurse teacher, who brings as subcategory the casualization of teaching. As a result, this research pointed out as important factors in the nursing process to become a teacher: the experiential knowledge; the theoretical / practical knowledge in Nursing; the theoretical / practical knowledge in Education and training of teacher identity in the course of two activities, nurse and teacher. Such factors show that the nurse teacher turns into university teaching through a gradual and continuous process, starting in their family and school experiences, and goes forward at the university, when he directs his actions to research and monitoring. The internship and residency in hospitals schools, even as a student, appear as motivational experience for the future nursing teacher. Postgraduate courses contribute as an important source of knowledge for the development of their teaching activities. However, we find that is in the development of teaching activities that the nurse teachers see their professional identity and proceeds to relate to university teaching as a professional committed to the ideals of education, as well as with the educational process of young nurses.

Abstract:
Interpersonal relationships are essential to all segments of any human life. At nursing vocational schools these relationships are positioned as necessary factors to the students development and to their professional growth in the healthcare area. This qualitative study aimed to analyze the perceptions of teachers about the interpersonal relationship between teacher-student in nursing vocational education. The scenario consisted of a nursing vocational school at the city of São Paulo. The data collection was conducted with a focal group and the technique of content analysis was used to analyze it. The present findings indicate four categories: Interpersonal relationship between teacher and student; Teachers and Studentss Attitudes; Teachers and students profiles; and Students and their commitment to learning. The results showed that teachers experience the interpersonal relationship between teacher-student, with their attention toward deepening in their own teaching practice, though not always as an educational process guided by principles and values. They also noted that there are few spaces for dialogue and reflection about issues concerning the quality of interpersonal relationships between teachers and students. Teachers pointed out that often the student\'s profile is not consistent as the one who seeks to be a health professional and recognized the impact that their interpersonal relationships and attitudes in the formation of students in nursing vocational education. Its conclude is that the teacherss attitudes and their influence on students attitudinal learning was evidenced in the findings, impacting the future professional, and the teachers recognize that their perception in the teacher-student relationship is grounded at individual attitudes that are essentially subjectives and difficult to recognize in the development of the educational process

Abstract:
This is a cross-sectional study with quantitative approach. Aims to investigate the occupational stress of university teachers in temporary positions at the Center for Health Sciences, Federal University of Santa Maria, from the demand-control model proposed by Karasek (1979). Data collection was made by filling, by the teacher of a research protocol, divided into two parts: the first contained the elements for the characterization of the population, and the second was the short version of the Job Stress Scale. The population consisted of 25 substitute teachers divided into 12 departments of the Center for Health Sciences was observed predominantly female (56%), mean age 27 years, unmarried (60%) and without children (56 %). Most have post-graduate course (60%), occupies the position of seven months to one year (60%), has two or more jobs (56%) and meets weekly workload of 60 hours (52%). As for demand and control variables, 56% of teachers had scores compatible with high demand and 60% with low control over their work. Regarding the social support variable, 68% had scores of low social support, being 40% of teachers referred low social support and low job control. There was relationship between being male, having low social support and low job control. It was observed that 36% of teachers are in situations of high wear. Given the above, the results of this study confirm the first hypothesis of Karasek's model, which can set in the teachers' greater exposure to stress.

The target of this assignment is to check the real values attached by the nurses as educators or professional nursing professors. The research of quantitative approach was carried out in Tecsoma College of Health, Paracatu, Minas Gerais, in 2003. Five nursing professors were interviewed and answered some opened questions. Two ranks were taken in account in order to analyse the datas: a) motivation that leads the nurse to work as professor; b) the relation: nursing/education/health. The assignment showed up the gap in nursing background concerned about education, consequently the nursing professor usually doesn t know how proficient he is to face educative role in teaching in schools or out of. Schools. Such problems must be faced and na important way is pointed: the background that the nurses-educators-professors get from the Nursing Universitary degree or even from updating courses must be checked and must focus education and health in social context.

Many teachers, as they begin their educational activities in the field of health, do not attend courses to achieve pedagogical qualification or relevant undergraduate courses in education. In one s professional development he/she becomes a teacher when he/she identifies himself/herself with a discipline he/she became fond of while attending an undergraduate course and so he/she ends by performing the function of a teacher based on the traditional teaching-learning process. In spite of the growing number of schools and high level technical professionals in the field of nursing in Brazil, it seems that people are not concerned with the quality of their teaching, since few researches have been carried out concerning those professionals and their background development. In face of that issue, this study was carried out to raise the representation of senior high school nursing teachers about their development process. The research at issue was based on the theory of Social Representations, characterized as a descriptive exploratory quantitative-qualitative based approach. The subjects studied in the research comprised 12 (twelve) nursing teachers at senior high school level working in a private school located in Presidente Prudente. A questionnaire was applied presenting open and closed questions, after asking for their authorization, an explanation about its social and academic contributions, and the signing of the Term of Free and Conscious Consent. The information about the characterization of the participants was presented as a quantitative-based research. The qualitative data collected were interpreted in the light of content analysis. The outcomes show that the real development process undergone by the nursing teacher was represented by his/her experience in realizing himself/herself as such. Most of the teachers believe that proficiency in teaching involves putting in motion skills such as knowledge, attitudes, and ingenuity. Concerning the teaching practice, they try to pass on proficiency to their students, resources such as the capacity to articulate one s wisdom; they use group dynamics, reading and research as teaching procedures, and they carry out a formative and global assessment. From such outcomes, some possibilities stand out, items such as teaching qualification for those who are in need of it, the school seriously engaged in furthering its teachers qualification, and activities which favor the association between scientific knowledge, ingenuity, and attitude centered in the student s reality.

In the education systematized in Nursing, the Nurse assumes the paper of responsible by the formation of new professionals, so much in the higher education as in the vocational one in Nursing. Abstract:
Communication is a process that is internally related to expressiveness. There are professionals who use too much communication and expressiveness, as is the case of a teacher, which operates by transmitting information to effectively reach their students. The overall objective of this study was to investigate the expressiveness of a university professor of a nursing school, teaching a class by the means of the assessment of students. This is a descriptive study with a quantitative approach, performed in an institution of higher education in nursing at a public university. Enrolled students (141) in the nursing major, divided into three classes, carried out the assessment of expressiveness of a teacher of the previously mentioned institution, which whom had professional experience. This teacher was in regular activity and was not known by this student body. The assessment of expressiveness was performed by the means of a six- minute footage of a class taught by this teacher. This same footage was reviewed by three expert speech pathologists, voice specialists and experts in expressiveness. The research included four phases (preparation of instruments, by being the protocol of clinical assessment used and tool for the students; students\' questionnaire to evaluate the teacher, adjusted in accordance with the protocol of clinical assessment, reliability evaluation of the protocol by three expert audiologists; footage of the teacher participant to be evaluated). The outcome has shown that there were virtually very few disagreements between the experts regarding the evaluation of the expressiveness of the teacher, since they are specialists and have experience in radio and television. Regarding the identification of the expressiveness of the teacher according to the evaluation of students and experts in relation to the elements: voice type, pitch, vocal effort, loudness, articulation, facial expression, gestures and body posture, the outcome showed that the alternatives chosen by most students were significantly higher than the others and consistent with most experts. The elements \"emphasis\", \"the showing of experience\" and \"what drew attention in the video\" were not possible to compare, because there was no equivalence between the instruments used for the evaluation of experts and students. The item \"pause in the speech\" hasn\'t shown statistical significance between the assessment of students\' responses, when compared to experts. When considering differences in ratings among the three classes together, this study showed that they differ a little from each other. It has been noticed that the assessment of the student on the expressiveness abilities of the teacher of nursing is consistent with the assessments of speech experts, showing that students at public universities are more than mere spectators but people can properly evaluate the teacher.

The discussion of the processes of identity formation was based on studies of Placco Vera de Souza, nationally, and Maurice Tardif and Claude Dubar, internationally. In an exploratory stage, we applied a semi-structured questionnaire to five teachers of graduate studies in Nursing and held a semi-directive with two of the participants in order to refine the data collection instruments. The main research made use of interviews with seven teachers of undergraduate degree in Nursing from the same institution. The data from both the exploratory study as the primary research were analyzed with reference to the assumptions of systematic content analysis by Laurence Bardin and Maria Laura P. B. Franco. The results indicated that nurses become teachers driven by the desire to teach and share knowledge, job opportunities, flexible hours and completion of professional income, and are influenced by their teachers and family formation trajectory. The characteristics valued by them at a teacher were: mastery of content taught, especially the technical knowledge, the continuous pursuit of knowledge, ethics, professionalism, humanization. It is noted a preponderance of the characteristics that involve the knowledge of the content at the expense of pedagogical issues. The reflection and concern about Teaching are present in their speech, as the constant quest to overcome the difficulties in the profession. They consider Teaching profession as a role of prominence in the same way that Nursing. Another factor highlighted in the responses was the strong representation of nurses in the professional career of respondents. In their reports, it was revealed that the construction as teachers occurs continuously throughout the career, which is evident in their speech when they claim to be better teachers now than earlier, despite being a prickly walk initially, it became pleasurable and significant over time. It is emphasized here the importance of valuing the knowledge of the teacher, because only starting with this knowledge, plus theoretically and conceptually working it, teachers will be able to expand the understanding of the work process in health that, now a days, has become highly complex.

The pedagogical training of nursing teacher in higher education has been contemplated in the academic current debate, in the sense to enhance the teaching work, meaning endow this professor of analytical perspectives that will help him understand the historical, social, cultural and organizational contexts in which gives his teaching activity. The professor of nursing is faced with the responsibility of nursing education, which is focused on the knowledge of the skills and general abilities, as provided for the National Curriculum Guidelines for undergraduate nursing courses. This dissertation aimed, from a Professional Master's in Education in Health (PMEH), understand how professional training the stricto sensu influences the performance of the nursing teacher in higher nursing education. The study recognizes the importance of pedagogical training of teachers and points to the need of these professionals pay attention to the education based on transmission of contents, seeking to work knowledge in order to add to the experience of the student. Abstract:
The teachers task in the evaluation process has shown how much this activity is motivating and at the same time challenging. Schools present different ways of looking at evaluation practices, which are found to be linked to their culture, their teaching plans and the experiences from each teacher, and at the same time, all of those involved in them. This study sought to know and understand the meaning of evaluation for a nursing teacher of a nursing professional high school course. Its a qualitative research that used as theoretical and methodological referential the Social Phenomenology approach by Alfred Schütz. For developing this study, semi-structured interviews with twelve nursing teachers who faced the evaluation of a nursing professional high school course were made. Discourse analysis led to build concrete categories that expressed the reasons why and the reasons for social action. The categories were: relationship among teaching, teacher and student; theory and practice relationship; ways of evaluating and subjectivity in the evaluation process; professionalization; qualifying the evaluation view and the compromise with self-evaluation. This analysis made it possible to identify the living kind nursing teacher who lives in his or her school routine the students evaluation in the context of forming the nursing technician, as it embraces the feeling of concerning by the way schools have evaluated students; socializing with their peers the distress of evaluating and sharing positive experiences; searching for chances of dialogues with freedom of speech and greater welcoming in their school work and evaluating the work itself represented by their living experiences in a world full of evaluation. This study revealed that there is a great need of evaluation to be positive for both the student and the teacher. And also as a teacher, its necessary to reflect on evaluation as a process and not just as a result. Teachers focused that, by having awareness of a formation evaluation, integrated with basis on the dialectic methodological assumptions, makes sense to the development of their educational practices

Abstract:
The goal of this research is to get students and professors’ opinions about waht means beeing a good or a bad teacher; learning strategies and evaluation criterias used on the classes. We used a qualitative research methods and a participative methodology in Action Research. We investigate 47 people (12 professores and 35 students) from a professional level education in nursing at an institution in Minas Gerais. The data were achieved by questionaries and participative observation. After categorizing the data we did the analysis. Most os the interviewed educators said that the caracteristics of a good professor are: openess, responsability, and among others that he has to be a facilitator of the learning process. And a bad professor is authoritarian and not able to stabilish a good dialog. On the other hand, the students said that a good professor is the one who dominates the class and knows how to explain the subject and the bad one doesn’t do any of those. Professors and students detached the expositive class as the most used technique in the classroom and the students emphasized the excessive use of the overheadprojector on this kind of classes. About the evaluation process, the professors showed that they were worried about adding new evaluation modalities, and the students said that tests, individual and group work were the most used evaluation techniques. About the difficulties inside the classroom, the professors mentioned that one of them is the students’seflessness and the students agreed that desmotivation is a problem in the classes. Professors and students said that they both have some knowledge about distance learning education. Students said that professors needed more motivation on their own lives and also on the teaching and learning process. The final results were shared with the students and professors, showing that this attitude would represent the beginning of a process which needs more attention, mainly those complex problems concerning teaching and learning process and the relation between professor and students.

Abstract:
Introduction: The nurse professor is a professional with an important transversal job in nursing teaching. Besides being university professors, their work is not only didactic-pedagogical, but also in distinct positions in the realm of knowledge, what demands diversified instrumentation aiming to enable the professional nurse to work in the job market. Nevertheless, under the contemporaneous hegemony of neoliberal logic, the nurse formation is found more articulated to the job market, what conceives a proactive professional to multitask. With the advent of neo-liberalism, the public university became an extremely complex institution; a sophisticated and diversified social organization where the career in teaching is compelled to the paradigm of academic productivity. Owing to the interest in studying the teacher formation and teaching practice in nursing by university nurse professors working in a public university, and based on extensive scientific reading, the term teacher formation was better understood within a broader perspective as teacher professional development. The teacher professional development is built along with a career in teaching which can be influenced by the educational institution and political contexts. Considering the influence of neo-liberalist politics on the Brazilian public university, it was noted that the teacher professional development of university nurse professors has a deep relation with the teaching practice in nursing. Hence, this research answered the following question: How is the teacher professional development of university nurse professors working in a public university? Objective: Analyze the teacher professional development of university nurse professors working in a public university. Methodology: Study of a naturalistic case, descriptive and exploratory with a qualitative approach carried out along with São Paulo University (USP), in a nursing college course leading to a Bachelor of Education degree from Ribeirão Preto nursing school (EERP). Therefore, primary and secondary source data was obtained. For the primary source data collection a semi-structured interview was carried out, and for the secondary source data collection, teacher practice observation and documentation verification were chosen, which comprises the analysis of the Curriculum Lattes of the interviewed teachers, teaching practice plans of the ministered subjects and the pedagogical project of the course. The interviews and teacher practice observations were performed by the researcher between September and December 2016. The observations were posterior to the interviews by means of participant observer technique being depicted in a field diary, what totaled 200 hours of observed pedagogical practice. The participants\' inclusion in the study characterized by intentional sampling complied with the following criteria: being a nurse professor in Full Time Dedication Regime to the Teaching and Research; having worked or been working in one or some of the 23 annual or semi-annual disciplines which were being offered to the graduate students of the first and fifth year of the course in the second semester of the school year of 2016; having experience in teaching of at least three years. The semi-structured interview data was organized in four thematic categories and verified through content analysis in the thematic analysis modality. In the analysis, Carlos Marcelo Garcia\'s theoretical reference was used. The research was put into execution after the approval of the Ethics Committee. The nurse professors had a voluntary participation after acceptance and signature of the agreement term free and elucidated. Moreover, the secrecy of the applicants was maintained and the anonymity of the information gathered guaranteed. Result, analysis and discussion: The understanding about the relationship between the nurse professor and the public university, the curriculum, the teaching in nursing and professionalism permitted the analysis of the teacher professional development of this specific group. Thus, 30 nurse professors participated in the research with the preponderance of adult women, college graduated for over 10 years with professional experience in teaching and nursing assistance for over 5 years. The analysis and discussion were built in four thematic categories: - The organization of the public university as an inherent element to the teacher professional development; - The curriculum as an intrinsic element to the teacher professional development; - The teacher professional development of university nurse professors and the profession\'s expectations regarding graduation course opportunities and career in teaching; - The teacher professional development of university nurse professors and the didactic-academic activities that involve the teaching in nursing. It was inferred that the university nurse professors comprehend the primordial function of the public university as a social institution. Nonetheless, they consent with their contemporaneous hegemonic position while social organization, and perceive the university material structure as a contributing factor to the teacher professional development. In addition, the curriculum was noted as an instigating and diverging element among the professors, they felt the necessity of educating themselves and sharing ideas about its development. The nurse professors get involved in the teaching process, teach nursing executing their pedagogical practices in appropriate environments, but they have difficulty as for time availability to prepare their teaching activities beforehand. The group presents disagreement regarding articulation between pedagogical project, teaching plans and pedagogical practice development. Furthermore, they coordinate teaching, the research and extension, but demonstrate discrepancies concerning teaching strategy use and theoretical references to fundament their pedagogical practices. Lastly, the nurse professors understand the teacher professional development as an element that encompasses the teaching career and that influences positively or negatively the teacher practice in the nursing graduation. The group also utters the need of assessment indicators at the university which motivates the empowerment of the professor in the teaching area. Final Considerations: The teacher professional development of university nurse professors can influence the teaching practice, benefitting or not the nursing education. It is expected that this study has fomented reflections about the teaching practice of university nurse professors under a broader perspective of the teacher formation, as well as having contributed to modifications in the field of nursing teaching. In neo-liberalism times, it is recommended that the discussion field and the teacher professional development research be expanded involving nursing education in public universities

Abstract:
This research aims to understand the teaching practice of university professors in the area of Nursing studies who are considered a model of good practice, particularly with regard to the development and demonstration of Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK). PCK is a powerful construct, systemic and multidimensional, which integrates disciplinary, pedagogical and experiential knowledge of the teacher. This concept was originally developed by Shulman and his collaborators at Stanford University, and it is defined as the teacher’s ability to transform the knowledge of the matter into comprehensible structures for the student. Most studies focus on exploring the cognitive dimension, while the influence of the emotional dimension on the PCK has been greatly overlooked. This research aims to address the need to expand the traditional concept of the PCK to include an emotional understanding of how students learn, as well as to explore and assess the emotions of the teacher about himself, his colleagues and the social and political context where teaching activities take place. Objectives: To describe the manifestations of PCK in university professors within Nursing studies who are considered a model of good teaching practices; and to explore the emotional and attitudinal dimension of PCK through the educational experience of university professors in Nursing studies. Methodology: This thesis is a qualitative review based on an instrumental case study with a hermeneutic phenomenological approach, as it aims to explore the phenomenon from the standpoint of its protagonists and to interpret it within the natural setting of their development. The participants, which were intentionally chosen, are two nursing professors in two Catalan universities, considered to be good teachers both by their students and peers. Data was obtained via non-participant observation in classrooms; extensive interviews with teachers: biographical and practice analysis; student group interviews; informal conversations; and analysis of pedagogical-didactic documents. For the analysis we used the method of constant comparison as an inductive process of categories and metacategories construction. Results: Main results revolve around two qualitative domains: the PCK and the attitudinal and emotional dimension embedded in the PCK. Data obtained shows that: A) The development and demonstration of the PCK by educational experts is shown through various strategies in the classroom such as: confrontation and adaptation of knowledge; B) The dialogic-reflexive dimension is a trait that stands out as inseparable from the PCK; C) Emotional awareness concerning educational practice is integrated in the PCK. Conclusions: The PCK manifests itself in the classroom through various actions, procedures and modalities, of which we highlight the attitudinal and emotional dimension that allows us to explain and understand its pedagogical effectiveness. The manifestation of PCK in expert teachers provides us with a very valid knowledge to be considered when planning and designing teaching training programs in order to improve the quality of university teaching.

Abstract:
The object of this exploratory, qualitative study was the working process of Nursing faculty in different contexts of higher education institutions (HEI) in the State of São Paulo. The overall objective was to describe and analyze the main aspects related to the faculty working process in three contexts of institutions that offer nursing courses in the referred state. The chosen theoretical-methodological framework was the historical and dialectical materialism. The analytical category was the faculty working process, anchored on the concepts of work and professionality. Three HEI were selected according to the typology of contexts proposed by Balbachevsky, which classifies institutions into: business, mixed, and academic. Twenty-four subjects were approached through semi-structured interviews; nine subjects from the business, eight from the mixed, and seven from the academic context. The empirical material was submitted to discourse analysis as proposed by Fiorin, adapted by Car and Bertolozzi. Results showed that faculty work is under a process of precariousness and intensification in the three contexts, but with relevant differences. In the business context, the predominant labor regime is that of hourly work, which makes it difficult to establish an effective formal career plan. The material and human infrastructure is scarce and, thus, limits the working process. Nevertheless, the faculty perceives the support they receive from the coordination office of the nursing course, which assigns respect and autonomy. Faculty work is mainly aimed at teaching within classrooms. The major difficulties are related to the students profile. There is little involvement in research and outreach activities. In the mixed context, the part-time labor regime predominates, with a formal and effective career plan, although the faculty faces difficulties to comply with some of the criteria to rise in the career. Infrastructure is considered satisfactory but some inadequacies are reported. There is also a male and medical hegemony, which makes it difficult for nursing to gain a position within the institution. Despite these difficulties, some reports show that the context focuses on the quality of education rather than on profits. Faulty work is aimed at undergraduate education, with an early start in field education, in which the main reported difficulties refer to the physical and mental burden of the faculty. In the academic context, the faculty works in a full-time and exclusive labor regime with an explicit and effective career plan. Although considered satisfactory, there are reports of infrastructure inadequacies. Work is mainly focused on administrative activities and research, which are overvalued, with strong implication on faculty work. The undergraduate and outreach education activities are seen as undervalued within the institution. Several difficulties exist in field education. It is concluded that although the faculty working process lies in the same structural context of higher education, the faculty working process occurs differently across the three addressed contexts in terms of the organizational and didactic practices. Changing this scenario requires, among other aspects, a process of faculty professionalization with a view to identify, analyze and create forms to deal with this situation, and to recognize, as a starting point, the diversity of faculty work in different contexts.

This study aims to understand how nursing undergraduate professors and students interact during knowledge production related to the palliative care of patients with terminal conditions. Our main main objectives were the following: (1) Understand how the processes of teaching / learning that focus on theoretical-practical activities produce knowledge along patient care on the health services; (2) Know the learning strategies used by undergraduate nursing professors, or the lack thereof, in teaching with patients on terminal process; (3) Identify how professors act in regard to the complex learning experiences of their students; (4) Contribute to the field of teaching in higher education programs. A qualitative research method was used, which included performing semi-structured interviews with six professors of a nursing college, who all act as learning supervisors for more than 5 years, as well as the students of the same course. The collected data was organized in three dimensions: (1) Among work and the university: the origins of knowledge of female nursing professors; (2) Pedagogic strategies for relationships between students, professors and patients in terminal process; (3) Challenges in everyday teaching at the bedside. The literature revision and our findings from the interviews help to understand that approaching the subject of “palliative care” is a complex and multifaceted activity. Learning to perform care of patients suffering from terminal conditions seems to be possible only with a reflection of human existence and the understanding of the inevitable ending of human life. As soon as we consider death as part of life, we will be able to approach this subject openly, diminishing the suffering of all those involved in the process. This study demonstrates that many educational programs don’t explicitly include this subject on the undergraduate schools curriculum, leaving it the discretion of professors in real situations. At the same time, it demonstrates the importance of formal training in palliative care for nursing professionals.

Abstract:
The present study has as main goal to get to know the Social Representations from the teaching being to the nurse teacher on nursing graduation, as well as all the features of the upbringing and professional trajectory essential on the decision of becoming a teacher. Thirteen nursing teachers from the nursing graduation course from two universities in the Região Metropolitana do Vale do Paraiba Paulista who teach nursing sciences subjects. Featured as an exploratory-descriptive with a qualitative approach at the light of Social Representations theoretical references, being two tools used to collect data: a questionnaire comprising questions pertinent to socio-demographic data and upbringing and professional, and the other tool the half-structured interview with the guiding issue: `What made you become a teacher? Speak about your professional trajectory. The methodological approach used on the analysis of the interviews was the Collective Subject Speech, when three main ideas were identified, namely: The nurse is an educator; More time to care for children; External Influences. The results on the first CSD revealed that the Social Representations on the teaching being to the participants were based on caring in nursing owns history, when they regarded the nurse as a born educator and teaching as a way of caring. Other motivating factors were mentioned as well: communication skills, socializing skills, tools to contribute to change realities, turning theory into practice, besides being engaged in researching and studying all the time. At the second CDS the participants stated that teaching was the way to bring professional life and the role of mother together, showing that the Social Representations of womens social role as responsible for the care for the children remains unaltered even after her insertion in the job market. At the third CDS it was highlighted that the construction of a professional identity is closely related to the socialization process that begins in the nuclear family and spreads out for a lifetime, introducing the person into new segments of the society as it was the case of the professional socialization influenced by the graduation teacher. It is said to be that this case can elicit the debate and the reflexion on the process of nursing teacher upbringing for the practice on higher education in view of the Nursing Curriculum Guidelines proposals.

Abstract:
Introduction: The formation of teachers for the technical professional education of secondary school in Nursing turned to the characteristics of the contemporary society presupposes the insert of the digital technologies of information and communication (TDIC) in the educational processes. The existence of the e-learning in the initial formation can aid the teachers to insert those technologies in their practice in a critical and competent way. Objective: This study had as objectives the construction and implementation of virtual classes for the Nursing Licensure Course of the School of Nursing of the University of São Paulo (EEUSP) and the evaluation of the teaching strategies adopted in the dimensions \"construction and synthesis of the knowledge\" in those classes. Method: This is an applied technological production research developed in three stages. The first stage corresponded to the construction and implementation of the virtual classes. The second stage was related to the evaluation of the teaching strategy adopted in the dimension \"construction of the knowledge\" through the analysis of the contributions posted on the forums of discussion of the virtual classes. The criteria of learning evaluation that contemplated the degree of interaction and the domain of the content covered in the course were chosen as analyses categories. The third stage, related to the evaluation of the teaching strategy adopted in the dimension \"synthesis of the knowledge\", started from the analysis of the resolution of the problem proposed. The analysis categories contemplated the pertinence of the resolution to the problem and the clarity in the expression of the ideas. Results: Three virtual classes were built (Theory of the Significant Learning, Dialectical Methodology and Reflexive Teacher) using as methodological reference the contextualized instructional design and as theoretical references, the dialectical methodology of the knowledge construction, the theory of the significant learning and the andragogy. The classes were implemented in three editions of the course (2010, 2011 and 2012). The analysis of the virtual classes in those editions showed that, the theoretical-methodological references adopted in the construction of the same ones favored the significant learning starting from the construction of the knowledge. It also showed that the teaching strategies adopted in the \"dimensions construction and synthesis of the knowledge\" were appropriate to these purposes and the comprehension of the learning process of the graduates favoring the auto- and heteroregulation of the learning. It signaled that the inclusion of the self-evaluation in forums and the change in the evaluation criteria, in 2012 edition, contributed to the improvement in the quality of the participation of the graduates and in the apprehension of the knowledge. It also pointed new paths to the improvement of the classes. Conclusions: The results showed that the adopted theoretical-methodological references enabled the elaboration of virtual classes centered in the construction of the knowledge and in the collaborative learning, as an innovative proposal for the insert of the digital technologies of information and communication in the formation of nursing teachers.

The theoretical basis of the research was guided by the concept of Social Representation enunciated by Sèrge Moscovici (1978) and mediated by Denise Jodelet (1984) and Mary Spink (2204). Considerations about nursing teaching were made within the Brazilian education scene, evincing the technical teaching legalization in the social economic and political context of the country which regulated the nursing technical teaching. The last demands required by the Education Ministry and the Nursing Regional Council about the teaching practice in the technical course were also described in this research. The data collection was possible through semi structured interviews, carried out with 07 nurse teachers egressed from the post graduation course with pedagogic approach. It was used a qualitative approach based on e content analysis standing out the research subjects. The results revealed that the social representations of the role of being a teacher in the target population had been anchored in the perspective of transmitting the curricular and moral contents, although, the results also tried to push away the traditional paradigm idea of the teacher as an only knowledge transmitter. The results made evident as well that the post graduation course with pedagogic approach has contributed with the participants nurse teachers for the construction and reconstruction process of being a teacher. The social representations of those teachers also revealed, at last, the satisfaction of being a teacher connected with the idea of happiness in doing their teaching activities, what hasn’t put aside the strong presence of the nurse profession.

Abstract:
Workplace violence, which exists in many professions, is not excluded from the nursing profession. The term horizontal violence is commonly used to define violence amongst colleagues in the work force. Despite an increase in the literature during the last three decades, horizontal violence continues to remain a serious issue for the nursing profession. This phenomenon must be taken seriously because studies indicate that nurses encountering co-worker violence often intent to leave the profession. Clearly, this will cause a greater strain on the current nursing shortage, which is currently projected to increase. The strain of nurses encountering incivility amongst one another, will not only impact the nursing profession but also health agencies/organizations. The ongoing recruitment and termination of nurses’ will adversely impact organizations. Finally, as health care is already associated with many stressors, the additional strain of horizontal violence will ultimately impact patient care. The intent of this study was to explore nurses’ experience of horizontal violence; this to draw attention of the possible consequences and the seriousness of horizontal violence to the nursing profession and health care organizations. The intent was also to identify strategies to mitigate horizontal violence in the workplace. A qualitative approach was employed using phenomenology as the research methodology. Phenomenology is the study of the phenomena through the lived experience, which is exactly the essence that I intended to capture in the work place violence study. Data collection was completed via individual in-depth interviews. Themes and patterns were identified during the interview process. The results of this study revealed that nurses were enduring horizontal violence and the current methods of dealing with co-worker incivility were not effective. Although policies were in place to deter co-worker violence, these were not enforced, and the reporting methods were a deterrent to report horizontal violence.

Abstract:
Incivility disrupts the learning environment for nursing students and faculty, and contributes to the national nursing shortage since many nursing faculty reportedly leave academia because of disruptive student behaviors. Academic leaders at a midwestern college of nursing are concerned by the increasing number of students engaging in uncivil behaviors and are seeking solutions. Using Clark's conceptual model, which holds that incivility can be mitigated with effective communication and engagement, this qualitative case study was designed to understand what faculty perceive as the cause of student incivility, and what actions they believe would decrease these uncivil behaviors. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews with 10 purposefully selected faculty members who met the established criteria for participation. The data were transcribed, member checked, and coded for emerging themes. Coding was completed using an open and axial coding process. Nursing faculty communicated a lack of knowledge regarding how to address student incivility, and expressed not feeling properly skilled to defuse uncivil encounters. Five major themes emerged, as follows: classroom expectations, caring culture, organizational support, orientation, and student entitlement. A 3-day professional development workshop on managing student disruptive behaviors and promoting civility within the learning environment was developed as the project outcome. Addressing incivility by learning effective ways to respond, manage, and diminish disruptive behaviors has the potential to positively impact the nursing profession, the patients in nurses' care, and the healthcare system.

Abstract:
This research proposed to characterize the pedagogical practice of teachers who work on Professional Technic Education of Nursing Intermediate Level in a private institution of São Paulo State countryside and also identify the course´s coordinator perception as for pedagogical practice of course´s professors. It s a question for a descriptive-explorer study, qualitative nature. The data were obtained by recorded semi-structured interviews, since july until december 2006. The studied population was composed by five teachers nurses who ministered theorical and practical classes and by the course coordinator, whom were working in this institution at the research s moment. Three categories emerged by the analysis of interviews guided for the Central Phenomenon: The Pedagogical Practice on Professional Technic Education of Nursing Intermediate Level. They are: the professor at the professional school institution; the way to be a professor; the teaching-learning process: projection, execution and evaluation. From the general analysis of categories, became possible the construction of some reflections about the educative practice of professors and coordinator, considering the experiences related by them. The professors are former agents and they need to update their knowledges. In this manner, it s fundamental to rethink the pedagogical practice, giving emphasis to a educative activity based in praxis, as a transformation instrument.

Full text
Abstract:
In its struggle to be recognized as a legitimate profession, nursing has proceeded in several directions, promoting diversity of professional views among its practitioners. The many changes taking place in nursing supported the need for a study determining exactly how staff nurses view the profession of nursing. The criteria of a profession as defined by Valiga (1982): the boundaries, goals, and scholarly component of the discipline, the recipient of the discipline's service, the relationship of the discipline to others, and the independence, responsibility, autonomy, commitment, and activities of the discipline's practitioners (pp. 126-127), were the basis of the study. The views of the profession as held by the staff nurses were related to the variables of age, preparatory and/or additional nursing education, number of years worked since graduation, length of time in present employment, and the agency of employment. The 600 subjects were randomly selected by computer at the Registered Nurses' Association of British Columbia (R.N.A.B.C.). The Views About Nursing Questionnaire, developed by Valiga (1982), along with a background information questionnaire were sent to the subjects by the R.N.A.B.C. A total of 262 usable questionnaires were the basis of data analysis. Pearson product-moment correlations and analysis of variance were performed as appropriate. These analyses revealed that there was an inverse, but not statistically significant, relationship between age and number of years worked and scores on the Views About Nursing Questionnaire. There was no relationship between the scores and education and the scores and length of time in present employment. Because a large majority of respondents were employed in acute care hospitals, no analysis of the relationship of agency of employment and the scores was undertaken. Conclusions and implications of this study are addressed and suggestions for further study are presented.
Applied Science, Faculty of
Nursing, School of
Graduate

Abstract:
This study examined the perceptions of nursing as a profession of students graduating from college-based nursing diploma programs. To answer the research question, the Concept of Nursing Scale designed and tested by Valiga (1982) was administered to 101 students in British Columbia Colleges approximately four weeks prior to graduation. Demographic data were also obtained. The responses were coded and scored by hand and the data entered into computer files. The statistical package used for analysis consisted of the SCSS Conversational System (Nie, et al., 1980). The concepts reflected in the Valiga Concept of Nursing Scale consist of: (a) boundaries of the profession, (b) recipient of the profession's service, (c) goals of the profession, (d) relationship of the profession to others, (e) independence of the practitioner, (f) responsibility of the practitioner, (g) scholarly component of the profession, (h) autonomy of the practitioner, (i) commitment of the practitioner, and (j) activities of the profession. Scores were high in the areas of definition, client, goals, and scholarship. These results indicated that: (a) the students surveyed had a clear definition of the scope of the profession, (b) they were able to identify the recipient of the profession's service and the goal of the profession, and (c) they recognized a scholarly component to the profession. The scores in the areas of independence and commitment were marginally lower than in the four areas mentioned above. These findings implied that the students graduating from college-based nursing diploma programs perceived nursing as functioning independently and that commitment was viewed as a characteristic of the nursing profession. Finally, the scores in the areas of autonomy, responsibility, relationships, and activities were low. These results indicated that the students surveyed perceived nursing as having minimal control over its practice and did not view the members of the profession as being responsible and accountable for their own actions. In addition, these students did not have a clear understanding of the nature of nursing's relationship with other members of the health care team and were uncertain as to the activities of the nurse.
Applied Science, Faculty of
Nursing, School of
Graduate

Abstract:
Nursing as a profession has historically been largely dominated by females, both in terms of the demographical profile and the common perception of nursing being a task for women. A small minority of men do however practice as nurses and as such are anomalous in a female dominated profession. Drawing on profeminist theories of masculinities this study aimed to investigate the experiences of men working as nurses in Ireland, how they relate to masculinities and how they negotiate a gendered identity. Using a qualitative interpretative methodology 16 in-depth interviews were conducted with practicing male nurses. Results reveal tensions and contraindications for men in negotiating gendered identities as nurses with significant evidence of positioning in relation to hegemonic ideals. The fluidity and contingency of masculinities is also revealed, particularly in relation to emotionality and embodiment. This study contributes to the knowledge base of sociological theories of masculinities but also to knowledge about the nursing profession and its gendered aspects.

Abstract:
This thesis explores perceptions of nursing held by a range of stakeholders at the beginning of the 21st century. Using a constructivist methodology, this study locates nursing within the current context of healthcare, acknowledging the historical and socio-political influences which have contributed to shaping nursing’s identity and nursing work. The use of a case study approach as the mode for constructivist inquiry draws on an understanding of this approach as a ‘depth examination of an instance’ (Lincoln and Guba, 1985 p.360). This recognises the contemporary and time bound nature of the study, located in a time of modernisation and change within both nursing and the wider National Health Service.

Abstract:
Abstract:Even though indiscipline, violence, academic failure and school abandonment are not recent phenomenon, nowadays they constitute a dilemma in which schools find themselves confronted with. This phenomenon, which in many cases is a part of the educational process, disturbs students’ learning process and creates an environment of emotional and professional instability among the teaching staff. In consequence, teachers feel impotent, which leads to a lesser investment in their relationships with the students. The main theme developed in this project, which focuses on students’ indiscipline in the classroom, is a result of a work done in PES’s group. Its main objective was to build knowledge about this kind of reality in order to create an intervention that allows reducing indiscipline behaviors. The methodology used was the project work. When we arrived, we noticed that the tense atmosphere and some conflicts between teachers and students and among the students, were related to the occurrence of indiscipline behaviors (that were essentially of opposition and verbal abuse), so that is why we made an intervention with the group that was participating, seeking to reduce inappropriate behavior and develop a positive relational environment. We seek to identify indiscipline behaviors that occur in classrooms and characterize teachers and students insights about these issues. The information was collected through the use of techniques of direct observation, document analysis, informal conversations, group discussions and semistructured interviews, which then allowed the establishment of an action plan designed to seven sessions and integrated in a curricular project of the discipline “Cidadania”., and the realization of a workshop with teachers that would provide a space for reflection and sharing experiences on this subject.

Abstract:
Due to the digitalization era and challenges faced by the healthcare sector, Medical Information Systems are now being extensively used at hospitals. The implementation of the systems is a complex task which entails a need for careful considerations from a managerial view, since the main purpose with implementing the systems is for managerial control. One of the things management should consider is the professional aspect. The nursing profession is a highly specific one, and this could implicate special considerations. The aim of this master’s thesis is to take on a sociotechnical approach towards the implementation of Medical Information Systems and investigate how the nursing profession is affecting the implementation process, and what it may implicate for hospital management. To answer the research question a qualitative approach has been chosen. The empirical data has been gathered through semi-structured interviews with nurses from the case organization. The result implies that the nursing profession have a substantial impact on the implementation process. Instead of embracing the instructions and support offered by management, the nurses develop their own way of working within the system.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the impact of military influence on civilian nursing development from the outbreak of war in 1939 until the restructuring of nurse administration in 1969. It will be argued that a military imposition on civilian nursing was responsible for hindering professional progress and preventing reform. This argument challenges the orthodox view of nursing history which maintains that nurses adopted a variety of professionalization strategies in order to gain credibility and state recognition. This recognition was only achieved as a result of a thirty year battle, during which status became an over-riding concern. This thesis argues that the medical demands of the Second World War threatened the professional foundations of nursing organization, and nurses responded by adopting militarization strategies in an effort to raise and protect their status. These militarization strategies affected all aspects of nursing practice and organizational development, and held significant implications for the post-war reconstruction of health -care delivery. Traditional studies of nursing history in this period have concentrated on the civilian nursing records alone, and have therefore overlooked the military dimension of nursing development. This study uses civilian nursing records, including those of the General Nursing Council and the Royal College of Nursing, in conjunction with military nursing records, including those of the War Office, and the correspondence and diaries of military A comparative analysis of these records proves that the militarization of nursing was an important issue. The analysis explores the interchange of military and civilian nursing personnel during the Second World War, and examines four key relationships in the post-war era: betweengovernment and nursing policy, between nurse leadership and nursing practice, between nurses and other occupational groups, and between various nursing grades at ward level. This analysis exposes the various ways in which militarism has infiltrated these relationships, and has been allowed to dictate the direction and scope of nursing development

Knobloch, Siedine. "Compassion fatigue within the nursing profession : a concept analysis / Siedine Knobloch." Thesis, North-West University, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/10394/1611.

Full text
Abstract:
Nurse practitioners have a duty to compassionately care for the sick, wounded, traumatised and weak patients in their charge, which personally exposes them to the patients' pain, trauma and suffering on a daily basis. In addition to this, nurse practitioners work in demanding and dire circumstances, which influences not only their well-being, but also their ability to provide compassionate care. The result is a nursing workforce that is experiencing compassion fatigue. The aim of this study was to define compassion fatigue within the context of the nursing profession, through achieving three objectives which were guided by a philosophical inquiry design, used along with qualitative, exploratory, descriptive and contextual research strategies. The first objective was to conduct a concept analysis of compassion fatigue in order to construct a connotative (theoretical) definition. Using the concept analysis method of Walker and Avant (2005) which is based on the original method of Wilson (1987), the characteristics of compassion and fatigue were listed, ordered and reduced to identify the defining characteristics (connotations) and categories of compassion fatigue. These defining characteristics (connotations) and categories were used to clarify the meaning of compassion fatigue through the construction of a connotative (theoretical) definition. A model case, borderline case and contrary case were described to confirm the defining characteristics (connotations) of the concept. The categories and defining characteristics (connotations) of compassion fatigue were further established through a literature control that grounded the findings of the concept analysis. The second objective was to identify and describe the empirical indicators of compassion fatigue in order to construct a denotative (operational) definition. The empirical indicators were identified from the characteristics (connotations) of compassion fatigue and the literature control. These listed empirical indicators were then ordered and divided, so as to permit the synthesis of a denotative (operational) definition of compassion fatigue. The third objective was to describe a conceptual framework through an integrative literature review. The main constructs embedded in compassion fatigue, namely the environment, the nursing practice, and the nurse practitioner, were described in detail and the relationship between these factors and compassion fatigue explicated, with their interconnectedness being graphically presented in a conceptual map The findings reveal that there is an urgent need to make a concerted effort to deal with compassion fatigue, which is calamitous for the nursing profession. The recommendations for practice, education and research crystallize out of these findings.
Thesis (M.Cur.)--North-West University, Potchefstroom Campus, 2008.

Abstract:
Continuing Professional Education (CPE) is constantly evolving and is now mandatory in some professions in many countries. In Hong Kong, CPE for nursing profession remains voluntary. This research seeks to gather the perceptions, opinions and voices of nurse practitioners, college leaders and academic experts in Hong Kong if CPE is changed from a voluntary basis to a mandatory regime with the focus on analyzing different aspects of CPE. A literature review was carried out in order to distill the views of international scholars and practitioners, together with a review of policies pertaining to continuing professional development (CPD) and CPE. Furthermore, theoretical and practical implications were discussed, and suggestions for future researchers were made. In order to answer the research questions, a phenomenological qualitative study was conducted on the subject topic. Regarding the conceptual framework, the adult learning theory supplemented by motivation theories were scrutinized and analyzed while discussing the application of CPE. This study will contribute to the issue of CPE particularly as there were hitherto few qualitative studies on this topic. In connection with data collection, various methods were used, including individual interviews and focus groups, with participants recruited via (1) contact lists searched from the Internet, university directories, publications; (2) participants in relevant CPE courses for nurses. The study focuses on three cohort studies across time with a group of people who shared a similar characteristic and experience, involving 22 participants in total. 18 face-to-face individual interviews and 4 focus groups were organized. To probe the research questions, voices and opinions were collected from individual interviews. The data were transcribed, analyzed and organized by inter alia classifying by keywords and phrases. All the key concepts were coded, a technique helping to search for the relevant data to answer the research questions. Through feedback from participants on the findings, 10 key meaningful themes were successively derived from participants’ voices, opinions and answers. The results show that eleven participants were rather favorable to voluntary CPE at present. They doubted that mandatory CPE to some extent may bring along pressure and problems like labor shortage rather than professional and personal growth. On the other hand, the head of the nursing faculty of one of the universities in Hong Kong had no preference for adopting mandatory or voluntary CPE, while asserting that nurses should be self-disciplined and self-checking was necessary. In contrast, ten participants were slightly favorable to mandatory CPE in the long run for improving professional standards, provided that certain coordination and support would be given by employers.

Abstract:
Riyadh City in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) has a chronic and severe shortage of Saudi-trained nurses and a high nurse turnover rate. Expatriate nurses comprise most of the nursing workforce in Riyadh. This presents a challenge to safe healthcare delivery. To formulate strategies to promote and encourage secondary school Saudi students to choose nursing as their career path, it is imperative to understand community attitudes and perceptions toward the nursing profession. The aim of this study is to explore the perception of the Riyadh community toward nursing as a future career choice. In this study, the Riyadh community refers to final year high school students, parents of high school students and Saudi nationals working as nurses in Riyadh. A sequential exploratory mixed-method study was utilised to accomplish the aim and objectives of the study. The first phase uses qualitative focus groups and was conducted with the general community and nursing groups; it explored the issues and their perceptions of nursing in general. A questionnaire was adopted from Elham Al Naqshbandi. The validity and reliability of the questionnaire was tested, and the items of the questionnaire were assessed for their appropriateness. Finally, the questionnaire was distributed to the target sample in groups in Riyadh City. The qualitative findings were presented using explanatory themes in two sections. The three themes in section one are as follows: What is nursing? The contradictions; Social challenges; and Influence on the students’ decision to choose nursing as a career choice. The two themes in section two are the following: Experiences in career choice and a view of nursing in the Riyadh community. In the quantitative stage, 554 (86.6%) high school students completed the questionnaire in October 2014. The findings indicate that although school students respect the nursing profession, they demonstrated a lack of awareness in the community about nursing. Students’ concerns about nursing were around perceived future marital status and the lower financial remuneration compared to other professions. Riyadh community high school students are potential recruits for local nursing programmes and are a source of understanding about nursing as a career choice. The findings of this study support previous studies that reveal that choosing nursing as a career in Riyadh, KSA is strongly influenced by the societal image of the nursing profession and family attitude toward nursing. One’s perception of nursing as a career in Riyadh is influenced by institutional factors in the Saudi context (cultural-cognitive and normative factors). The reasons for not being interested in nursing as a future career include, but are not restricted to, normative factors; social status, financial status and sociocultural factors, such as influence of parents and religion; the issue of mixing with other genders; and long working hours and doing night shifts. Encouraging Saudi high school students to consider nursing as a future career option in Riyadh city requires fundamental reform and improvement to the societal image and understanding of the nursing profession. Strategies to do require plans to engage family members, particularly parents, as well as the leaders from high schools, nursing, the community, media and religious leaders to help reshape the image of nursing.

Abstract:
Nurses’ identity construction process starts in the undergraduate studies and strengthens in the professional practice. Nevertheless, the construction of an identity as a nursing teacher implies a less institutionalized trajectory. It begins after accessing university teaching and requires nurses to work in areas for which they were scarcely prepared during their training. On the other hand, in the last years the role of researcher also gained importance in nursing studies and nowadays it constitutes a new dimension of nursing teachers’ profession. In turn, it requires the construction and development of specific identity elements. Taking into account the previous considerations, this research aimed at enquiring into the processes of construction of nursing academics’ identity in order to promote nurses’ development and adaptation to the challenges of this new discipline. To fulfill this objective, we conducted four studies based on a descriptive and interpretative design, the first one with nurses teaching in two Chilean universities, and the other three with nurses of different Catalan universities. Data collection consisted in semi-structured interviews and weekly narrative diaries completed by the participants. The goal of the first paper was to identify how nurses are building their new teacher identity. The second study deepened in the analysis of how nurses represent their role as nursing academics and their conceptions, strategies and feelings involved in teaching-learning and research in nursing. In the third we analyzed the professional identity of academics in Nursing through the analysis of the most perturbing critical incidents. And the last paper aimed at analyzing academic nursing’ positions and the tensions experienced during a transition process. The results of the first study show that nurses think that they need continuous development in order to perform their new role, while the second shows that the nursing academics look for a balance between teaching and research and they also wish to promote the development of models and theories in their discipline. Regarding the third study, we found that nurses' professional identity in relation to the academic area is still under construction and that inexperience is the greatest obstacle in the management of critical incidents in the teaching task. Finally the results of the fourth study indicate that the identification of certain contradictions during a professional transition was very useful to avoid ‘a posteriori’ the appearance of critical incidents or discontinuities in the teaching practice. The existence of the so-called nursing academics’ novel identity in the role of research is highlighted as the main conclusion of this thesis. This implies that, together with the need to access to pedagogical and didactical specific contents and proper trainings for the management of critical incidents in the classroom, a specialized training for the development of abilities and competences that help professional position themselves in the field of research is required. We refer to the implementation of a program oriented towards the development of research competences in biomedical sciences, which would allow participants to solve problems related to this area and, ultimately, contribute to the improvement of the construction of nursing academics’ identity.

Abstract:
This thesis describes the nursing student experience in her/his clinical practicum, the pedagogical relationship between student and nurse, the role that she/he plays in her/his clinical training in different dimensions: development of reasoning and clinical skills, meanings elaboration around the act of caring, strengthening of relational and ethical qualities, self-reflection as a caretaker and the integration of these dimensions in clinical situations-on interaction with the hospitalized person. This is an educational research enrolled from a theoretical phenomenologicalhermeneutic perspective and from an ethnographic methodological approach. Fieldwork was developed in the framework of the courses “Practicum Hospitalario II and Estades Clíniques II” and clinical practices of the nursing students in a Nursing University School and a university Hospital from March 2011 until February 2012, the data collection strategies were non-participant observation, participant observation, informal conversation, in-depth interviews and written materials. The emerging qualitative axes were: the student-nurse relationship as starting center for the development of clinical practice and the meanings convergence between student and tutor nurse regarding training in competent nursing care. The pedagogical relationship which is by the student is conceived in this study as a care relationship that provides security, confidence and independence. It is the core base for the development of clinical reasoning, reflective thinking, clinical skills, sense of salience, the meanings construction in a convergent way around act of caring for another person in a holistically and located, and favoring student autonomous practice in care inter-actions reflective, competent, scientific, dialogical (intersubjective) and ethical with the hospitalized person.

Abstract:

Currently, the same criteria are being used for admissions into nursing programs in one school of nursing in the Northeastern United States. To date there are no statistically significant data to correlate these criteria with successfully entering the nursing profession. Due to the nursing shortage, limited number of seats available in nursing programs, low nurse retention, and high nursing school attrition rates, it is necessary to use an admissions process designed to select the candidates who are most likely to succeed on the NCLEX-RN, and enter into the nursing profession. A latent class analysis was used, and revealed that the ideal candidate was found to be an individual who is either an optimistic, full-time student, who earned a high ACT score, and had a career prior to enrolling into the nursing program, or was an optimistic, part-time student, who earned a low ACT score, and had a career prior to enrolling into the nursing program. A survey provided further insight and the responses indicated applicants who self-reported that they: have good judgment, seek out challenges, are capable of anything, are professional, are optimist, need to utilize what is learned, are ethical in nature, are able to recover quickly for failure, are motivated by intrinsic factors, are self-directed, complete what they start, have a sense of team-awareness, admit to mistakes, are resilient, have a sense of spiritual well-being, and possess leadership qualities, ultimately entered into the nursing profession.

Reputation management involves more than just image, identity and brand management. There is a definitive link between stakeholders within an organisation and its reputation, since those stakeholders can make or break the reputation of any organisation in any industry in all corners of the globe. The goal of this study is to analyse the reputation of the nursing profession by applying Davies, Chun, Da Silva and Roper's (2003) corporate reputation chain (CRC) model. The study concentrated on the motive for students wanting to enter the nursing profession within the public health sector in the Western Cape region in South Africa, the context of the nursing profession and its (negative) reputation, as defined by Chun et al. (2003), as well as the recruitment and retention of nurses. South Africa has unveiled plans for new clinics and hospitals across the country to meet the health needs of all citizens who use public health facilities. These hospitals and clinics need to be fully staffed. However, great care needs to be taken in selecting staff to work at these facilities. That selection process should begin by scrutinising the type of person who enters the profession. A qualitative exploratory design was adopted in this study, which used an electronic (closed and open-ended) survey with 27 statements/questions. The sample population for the survey consisted of 249 fourth-year students enrolled in the R425 Diploma in Nursing programme at the Western Cape College of Nursing. The objectives of the study were met, in that it succeeded in determining the motivation for students choosing nursing. The results showed that, although most of the respondents were positive about the profession, a significant proportion of them would have preferred other careers. There was also a definite disparity between students' perception of how the public views nurses and their own personal views of the profession. The research findings created the basis for the Nursing Reputation Management Framework and recommendations that may be applied in practice and have a positive impact on the nursing profession's reputation as well as the recruitment and retention of nurses in South Africa. Changing the negative reputation of nursing should rest in the hands of the profession itself. Nurses can therefore use these findings to rebrand themselves in a meaningful way that will have positive outcomes for their patients. Nurses need to change their own image and identity in order to change the negative perceptions/images of others, in particular that of the media and patients.
Mini Dissertation (MPhil)--University of Pretoria, 2017.
Communication Management
MPhil
Unrestricted
