Questo volume vuole essere un giusto riconoscimento all’impegno e alla dedizione che il Prof. Piero Ceccucci ha rivolto all’insegnamento della Lingua e della Letteratura Portoghese in Italia, ma anche dargli modo di ricordare, nel tempo, la gratitudine che l’Università di Firenze ha sentito nei suoi confronti e alla quale, ne siamo certi, resterà sempre legato.

This book is a tribute to Giovanna Brogi Bercoff, Full Professor of History of Russian at the State University of Milan and a leading authority on Polish studies, mediaeval Russian literature and Ukrainian studies, both in Italy and abroad. Former Chairman of the Associazione Italiana degli Slavisti, she contributed to project Italian Slavic studies into an international dimension. Among the most significant aspects of her intense academic and teaching career we should mention the pioneering studies on historiography and the Baroque culture in the Slavic area, as well as the introduction of Ukrainian studies at the University of Milan. The authors of the essays collected here, which range from linguistics to philology, and from literary theory to history, are Italian and foreign scholars of different generations and different cultural backgrounds.

Abstract:

L’archivio dell’Associazione Nazionale Docenti Universitari consente di mettere a fuoco il contributo poco conosciuto che un’avanguardia di professori universitari ha fornito al processo di riforma dell’Università sviluppatosi dal 1968, dopo il fallimento del disegno di legge 2314. L’ANDU si riconobbe subito nella leadership di Giorgio Spini, professore di storia nella facoltà di Magistero di Firenze, che alla direzione sindacale accompagnò una costante elaborazione politica e culturale, in grado di proiettare la questione universitaria in una dimensione problematica di lungo periodo. Il movimento studentesco è fin dagli inizi un interlocutore fondamentale, di cui l’ANDU sostiene le iniziative, condannando le repressioni poliziesche e la chiusura delle autorità accademiche. In questo quadro il diritto allo studio diventa l’obiettivo primario della riforma dell’Università, non solo per il superamento della sua natura classista, ma come contributo determinante per mettere in discussione i rapporti di classe e gli equilibri di potere della società italiana.

Che cosa accadde ai professori espulsi con le leggi razziali del 1938? E ai più numerosi e meno noti studiosi non strutturati che furono sospesi dal servizio? Che cosa fecero gli studenti cui venne negata l’iscrizione all’università o i neolaureati senza più prospettive per il loro futuro? Gli archivi universitari nulla ci dicono in proposito ; quel che si voleva era che gli studiosi e gli studenti dichiarati di ‘razza ebraica’ fossero cancellati e dimenticati. Non pochi decisero di lasciare l’Italia. Quali furono i loro percorsi e le reti di aiuto? Come vennero trattati all’estero? Quanto soffrì la cultura italiana di quelle perdite? Nel dopoguerra, l’università cercò di recuperarle? Gli espatriati che fossero tornati avrebbero potuto portare nuove conoscenze e idee, ma molti non rientrarono. Perché? Focalizzandosi sul caso rilevante di Firenze, si indaga il minimizzato fenomeno dell’emigrazione intellettuale per motivi politici e razziali. Un recente passato su cui occorre sapere e riflettere.

Ma i veri protagonisti di questa opera non sono solo i Maestri della Scuola Agraria e Forestale fiorentina bensì le migliaia di studenti che in cento anni hanno frequentato, prima l’Istituto Nazionale Forestale e poi la Facoltà e che hanno portato in Italia e nel mondo i frutti degli insegnamenti ricevuti a Firenze.

Abstract:

The Metric Epistles of Albertino Mussato (1261-1329) are a collection of 20 compositions in Latin verse (of which, 12 in elegiac couplets, 8 in hexameters, for a total of 1,570 verses) composed between 1309 and 1326 and addressed to different recipients. The list of recipients includes friends of the author and representatives of the Paduan political and intellectual élite of the early 14th century such as the judges Rolando da Piazzola, Giovanni da Vigonza and Paolo da Teolo, the notary Zambono d’Andrea and Marsilio Mainardini; masters of grammar and rhetoric such as the Venetian Giovanni Cassio, Bonincontro from Mantua and Guizzardo from Bologna; religious personalities such as the Dominican friars Benedetto and Giovannino da Mantova, respectively lecturer and professor of theology at the Studium Generale of the convent of S. Agostino in Padua; collective recipients, such as the College of Artists and fellow citizens of Padua. After an editio princeps was printed in Venice in 1636 on the basis of a now lost manuscript, a critical edition of the Epistles is published here for the first time, including the complete corpus of the texts in the light of their entire manuscript tradition. The texts are accompanied by an Italian translation and a detailed commentary, which mainly aims to bring to light and analyse the dense intertextuality of Mussato’s poem (in particular classical Latin sources), reconsidering the cultural background of the author and his contemporaries in the context of the so-called ‘Paduan prehumanism’ and an ideal dialogue with Dante’s coeval biographical and literary experiences.

Abstract:

The Faculty of Political Science of Florence – the oldest school of political and social science in Italy, founded in 1875 by Carlo Alfieri and named after his father Cesare – has a tradition of study that is widely recognised, even abroad, to which the cultural project of this series is related. The first book is dedicated to the research activity carried out by Luciano Cavalli and the profound traces that it has left on Italian and European sociology. Now Professor Emeritus, Luciano Cavalli taught and worked at the "Cesare Alfieri" for many years from 1966 on. Around his commitment as a "pioneer" of sociology in Italy he mustered an array of sociologists, active in different universities, many of whom have opened up new frontiers within the discipline and have successfully cultivated a dialogue with the other social sciences, as the contents of the book clearly illustrate. This extensive collection of essays offers a clear image of the fertile sociological work that burgeoned around the scientific commitment of Luciano Cavalli and was often generated by his own action of cultural stimulus. The three sections into which the book is divided – Portrait of an intellectual, The sociology of political phenomena and Sociological theory and social change – address issues of great relevance to the contemporary sociological debate. The rapport between the democratic construction of the modern State and the role and functions of the leadership, the relations between citizens and leaders, the various forms of the democratic institutional structures and the transformations of political culture are interwoven with the Neo-Weberian interpretation of the charisma theory that Cavalli masterfully proposed. Also particularly significant and topical are the critical reflections made by writers whose scientific itinerary has run parallel to that of Cavalli for decisive stretches, and who were and are bound to his teaching when they tackle arguments such as the changes in urban life, immigration and the problems of economic, political and social development in our times.

Quando esteve em Sobral, em visita à Universidade Estadual Vale do Acaraú – UVA, Alessandro Portelli talvez não imaginasse que estaria plantando uma importante semente entre os estudantes da região. Essa semente germinou e, anos depois, temos inúmeras iniciativas e trabalhos de grande qualidade inspirados na obra do mestre italiano. Alguns deles, pensados e desenvolvidos no âmbito do Grupo de Estudos de História Oral, liderado pela professora Telma Bessa Sales, que por meio das professoras Yara Khoury e Heloísa Cruz, da PUC-SP, conheceu Portelli e, a partir de então, sempre o tem presente eu seus estudos, como neste livro, prefaciado por ele. Este livro é mais do que um apanhado de excelentes trabalhos de pesquisa em história oral, mas uma homenagem àquele que, gentilmente, compartilhou um pouco de seu conhecimento com uma geração ávida por produzir conhecimento sobre sua gente, sua terra, ou seja, sobre suas próprias histórias. A metodologia de Portelli ajudou a semear essas histórias e está presente em cada página a seguir, cujo fruto mais importante é o potencial de seguir inspirando mais e mais pesquisadores a ouvir, contar e registrar para a História nuances que, sem essa atitude, passariam despercebidas e normalmente cairiam no esquecimento.

"Nella lunga vita di molti contratti, possono verificarsi eventi imprevisti che incrinano l’equilibrio, soprattutto economico, delle reciproche prestazioni. Il discorso intorno al diritto-dovere di rinegoziare gli accordi esposti a sopravvenienze è ormai un tema classico del diritto civile, che rispunta ciclicamente in occasione di eventi di rilevanza mondiale capaci di compromettere la tenuta di innumerevoli contratti in corso. La pandemia di COVID-19 è solo l’ultimo esempio in ordine di tempo. Questa ricerca si propone di individuare il miglior approccio giuseconomico per affrontare il dilemma della rinegoziazione, in prospettiva strutturale, cercando di coniugare le soluzioni proposte dagli interpreti del diritto civile con i contributi di analisi economica del diritto, nella prospettiva della riforma del codice civile italiano e della progressiva armonizzazione del diritto privato europeo e internazionale. In questo percorso, l’individuazione di una regola di default stabile e duratura per un contesto mutevole e multiforme è forse la contraddizione in termini che più vale la pena affrontare. Matteo de Pamphilis, dopo la laurea in Giurisprudenza e il conseguimento del dottorato di ricerca in Diritto civile nell’Università di Bologna, collabora con la stessa Alma Mater come professore a contratto e tutor didattico in materie privatistiche. Negli ultimi anni è stato docente degli insegnamenti in lingua inglese Planning and public intervention in the lifestyle and health sector e Public and private action for the development of services nel corso di laurea magistrale in Wellness culture: sport, health and tourism. È socio aggregato dell’Associazione Civilisti Italiani e svolge la professione di avvocato nel Foro di Bologna, prevalentemente nel settore civile, commerciale e concorsuale."

Chapter 3 looks at the Islamic Republic of Iran and argues that while religion, laws, and customs impact the ability of researchers to conduct field research to a certain extent, the state’s authoritarian intervention plays a far greater role in limiting researchers’ freedom of inquiry. The chapter offers advice on how to deal with the limitations on research imposed by the authoritarian state. The chapter is based on the experiences of an Iranian American scholar, and an Italian professor based in Dublin. Examining this topic from the perspective of two female researchers with different backgrounds sheds light on the importance of religion and gender to fieldwork in Iran.

In the interwar years, the United States grappled with economic volatility, and Americans expressed anxieties about a decline in moral values, the erosion of families and communities, and the decay of democracy. These issues prompted a profound ambivalence toward modernity, leading some individuals to turn to Italian fascism as a possible solution for the problems facing the country. This book delves into why Americans of all stripes sympathized with Italian fascism, and shows that fascism's appeal rested in the image of Mussolini's regime as “the machine which will run and has a soul” — a seemingly efficient and technologically advanced system that upheld tradition, religion, and family. This book focuses on four prominent American sympathizers: Richard Washburn Child, a conservative diplomat and Republican operative; Anne O'Hare McCormick, a distinguished New York Times journalist; Generoso Pope, an Italian-American publisher and Democratic political broker; and Herbert Wallace Schneider, a Columbia University professor of moral philosophy. In fascism's violent squads they saw youthful glamour and impeccable manners, in the megalomaniacal Mussolini they perceived someone both current and old-fashioned, and in the corporate state they witnessed a politics that could revive addled minds. They argued that with the right course of action, the United States could use fascism to take the best from modernity while withstanding its harmful effects. Investigating the motivations of American fascist sympathizers, the book offers provocative lessons about authoritarianism's appeal during times of intense cultural, social, and economic strain.

Rachel é a única filha de Dona Marlene, uma cigana que vivia completamente desgarrada de seu povo, na região do Vale do Cariri-CE. De seu relacionamento com o filho de um médico famoso na cidade, veio a nascer Rachel. Porém, antes disso, ela foi expulsa da tribo e obrigada a prover seu próprio sustento. Foi para Fortaleza e lá conseguiu emprego em uma casa de família e, depois de dois anos, veio com mala e cuia para o Rio de Janeiro, onde seu único passatempo era a costura – o que lhe dava um prazer imenso. A menina cresceu e quase não tinha amigos por conta de sua origem cigana, no entanto, crescia tão formosa quanto a mãe. Apaixonou-se perdidamente por um de seus amigos próximos, mas sua mãe e a avó do rapaz não aceitaram o romance e ela foi obrigada a se separar dele. Dois anos depois, já iniciando a faculdade, cai nas graças de um professor e se casa com ele. Tempos depois, nasce Rutth, sua única filha. Esta se torna a heroína da trama quando, aos 17 anos, casa-se com um conde italiano e vai morar com ele na Itália. Inicialmente, é detestada e ignorada por toda família do conde, pois eles almejavam uma mulher extremamente rica e de família tradicional e Rutth, a despeito de sua beleza estonteante, era bem magrinha. Assim, seus ofensores a chamavam de Barbie. Contudo, ela consegue, de modo rápido e com relativa tranquilidade, aprender a língua italiana, fazer um curso superior de Design Artístico e ajudar seu marido na administração das empresas dele, é neste ponto que começa outra oposição a ela na família. No entanto, sua inteligência supera todos os desafios e ela vai paulatinamente arrefecendo a resistência a sua pessoa, por conta dos lucros que as empresas passam a ter e também quando nasce seu casal de gêmeos. Pouco tempo depois, todos terão que lhe beijar a mão jurando-lhe fidelidade. Assim, a trama segue…

Abstract:

Restructuring of companies, particularly merger and division both domestically or in a cross-border situation, has far-reaching consequences for all stakeholders. The contributions focus on the question of how to protect the interests of shareholders, creditors and employees at a European and national level appropriately. The articles discuss how to promote freedom of establishment in the growing competition between legal systems without encouraging a race to the bottom in the company and labour law framework. The cross-border conversion of companies is particularly delicate in this regard. From the workers’ point of view, it is decisive whether a restructuring constitute a transfer of undertaking and which labour law consequences a transfer has. Another particularly interesting aspect is the fate of the board-level employee representation in case of corporate restructuring. The papers shed light on European developments and some selected national manifestations of these issues. The authors are distinguished Austrian, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish and Serbian professors who specialise in company and labour law.

Abstract:

"Over the last years, the increase of emergencies occurring within the EU – or originating outside but having repercussions on it – has progressively brought to light the need to identify a common understanding of solidarity in the EU legal order. The book provides an overview of the socalled EU disaster response law and an appraisal of its peculiarity by assessing the substantial practical and theoretical role of solidarity in shaping the main legal instruments for disaster response occurring inside the Union. Special attention is devoted to the existing instruments providing financial and in-kind assistance in the event of a disaster and to the analysis of the recent initiatives concerning the provision of assistance to face the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. The detailed analysis of the legal value of the solidarity clause established by Art. 222 TFEU then allows to evaluate the actual existence of solidarity obligations within EU disaster response law. Susanna Villani is Postdoctoral Research Fellow in EU Law at the Department of Political and Social Sciences of the University of Bologna. Currently, she is also Adjunct Professor of EU Internal Market and International Trade Law at the University of Bologna and member of various research teams in Italian and EU projects. In 2018, she received her PhD in EU Law at the University of Bologna in co-tutorship with the National Distance Learning University (UNED) in Spain."
