Abstract:
ABSTRACT Environment Canada's Emergencies Engineering Division is spearheading a program in conjunction with the Canadian General Standards Board that would see the development of a certification and listing program in addition to a national standard for the testing of sorbent materials. Funding for this program is provided by Environment Canada (EC), Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), Marine Spill Response Corporation (MSRC), U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), and U.S. Minerals Management Service (MMS). The test methods are based upon those defined by the American Society for Testing and Materials and previous test methods developed by Environment Canada for our series of reports entitled Selection Criteria and Laboratory Evaluation of Oil Spill Sorbents. This series, which was started in 1975, encompasses a number of commercially available oil spill sorbents tested with different petroleum products and hydrocarbon solvents. The testing program will categorize the sorbents according to their operating characteristics. The main categories are oil spills on water, oil spills on land, and industrial use. The characteristics we will be evaluating with the new test protocols include initial and maximum sorption capacities, water pickup, buoyancy, reuse potential, retention profile, disintegration (material integrity), and ease of application and retrieval. In the near future we plan to incorporate changes to the test that would involve increasing our list of test liquids to encompass spills in an industrial setting, in addition to testing sorbent booms and addressing the disposal problem.

Abstract:
Category: Other; Ankle Introduction/Purpose: The internet is one of the first resources for prospective fellowship applicants, and a previous study evaluated the presence of information present on foot and ankle websites. This study aims to evaluate the accessibility provided via the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) websites and individual websites. Methods: The AOFAS website was used to identify the list of foot and ankle fellowship programs. The database information was used to review links to fellowship program websites and corroborate it with accessibility through a Google search. Information from fellowship program websites and the AOFAS was used to analyze the presence of previously described recruitment and educational content, and this analysis was compared to previously reported metrics. Results: Forty-eight orthopaedic foot and ankle fellowship programs were identified. The AOFAS database featured direct links to 19 (40%) fellowship websites with the Google search providing direct links to 35 (73%) websites. From the available program websites, the most common recruitment content was salary/benefits, faculty listing, program contact information (48, 100%), and program description (47, 98%). The most common educational content was presence of research component (44, 92%) and description of rotations/curriculum (43, 90%). Foot and ankle fellowship information markedly improved in domains of salary/benefits, program description, faculty listing meetings/courses, rotations/curriculum, and had less information in the domains of office/clinic information and operative experience. Conclusion: There continues to be substantial variability between foot and ankle fellowship websites and the AOFAS website regarding program content and descriptions. Some information is more readily available, but other domains have less information now than in previously reported research.

Abstract:
References to “most promising practices” in educational programs for students with severe disabilities reflect a mix of social values as well as empirically validated instructional strategies. A literature search and polling of nationally recognized experts in severe disabilities was conducted to generate a listing of 123 items representing Program Quality Indicators. This initial listing was then rated by six groups (a total N = 254) representing various interests and constituencies: (a) behavior therapy experts, (b) experts in severe disabilities, (c) experts in deaf-blind, (d) mental retardation researchers, (e) state directors of special education, and (f) parents involved in advocacy efforts. Mean ratings for each item support the relative values of each of the indicators, and the results of factor analysis of the item ratings revealed five dimensions, which were valued differentially by the six respondent groups. Results are discussed in terms of future efforts to translate most promising practices into typical practices for students with severe disabilities in public school settings.

Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effect of cross-listing on the size and structure of director compensation at individual director level. While much of the prior literature has focused on executive compensation, more recent literature has started to examine director compensation. Additionally, there has been extensive literature examining the impact of cross-listing on the corporate governance and equity valuation of listed firms. The literature, however, has largely ignored the effect of cross-listing on director compensation schemes. This study attempts to combine these two literature streams and examine the effect of cross-listing on director compensation. Design/methodology/approach This study uses American Depository Receipts (ADRs) and matched non-ADRs from the same country and industry to test the relationship between cross-listing and director compensation. Regressions with country, year and industry fixed-effects are employed. The relationship is further examined using only ADR firms during pre-listing and post-listing periods. Findings This study finds that directors of ADR firms receive higher total compensation and greater percentage equity-based compensation relative to directors of non-ADR firms. This study also finds that such differences in director compensation are dependent on the cross-listing program a firm is registered to. Directors of ADR firms also receive higher total compensation and greater percentage equity-based compensation during post-listing periods relative to their own compensation during pre-listing periods. Originality/value This study extends the literature on director compensation in a global setting, and is the first to examine an unanswered question regarding the effect of cross-listing on director compensation. This study provides important information that cross-listing affects the size and structure of director compensation between ADR and non-ADR firms, as well as between pre-listing and post-listing periods for ADR firms themselves.

Abstract:
In the past two decades, evidence-based status has been a coveted credential for many nonprofit organizations hoping to legitimize their programs or interventions. Several formal registries exist to provide a collection of health and prevention programs evaluated by experts and deemed “evidence-based.” While registries offer positive benefits like allowing for a centralized listing of approved programs, there have been concerns about issues pertaining to the process of obtaining the evidence-based credential. Namely, some of the criticisms include the use of inappropriate study designs, the lack of consistent evaluation of evidence provided in support of programs, as well as program creators being involved in the evaluation that ultimately shows positive program effects. Using focus groups of prevention specialists, this study explores the quest for evidence-based status. The results show themes of vindication, acting as a resource, and perceptions of relevant others informing the deeper meaning of motivation for pursuit of evidence-based status. Additionally, emergent themes of program iteration and evolution inform program preparation. The article shows that while placement on an evidence-based registry is a highly sought-after achievement, many program creators fail to understand the evaluation process for admittance as well as the potential criticisms of the lists.

Abstract:
Introduction: Most emergency medicine (EM) applicants use the internet as a source of information when evaluating residency programs. Previous studies have analyzed the components of residency program websites; however, there is a paucity of information regarding EM program websites. The purpose of our study was to analyze information on EM residency program websites. Methods: In April–May 2020, we evaluated 249 United States EM residency program websites for presence or absence of 38 items relevant to EM applicants. Descriptive statistics were performed, including means and standard deviations. Results: Of the 249 EM websites evaluated, the websites contained a mean of 20 of 38 items (53%). Only 16 programs (6%) contained at least three-quarters of the items of interest, and no programs contained all 38 items. The general categories with the least amount of items were social media use (9%), research (46%), and lifestyle (49%), compared to the other general categories such as application process (58%), resident information (63%), general program information (67%), and facility information (69%). The items provided by programs most often included program description (98%), blocks and rotations (91%), and faculty listing (88%). The items provided least often included housing/neighborhood information (17%) and social media links (19%). Conclusion: Our comprehensive review of EM residency websites in the US revealed the absence of many variables on most programs’ websites. Use of this information to enhance accessibility of desired information stands to benefit both applicants and programs in the increasingly competitive specialty of EM.

Abstract:
AbstractThis paper addresses the issue of analysing the run-time behaviour of lazy, higher-order functional programs. We examine the difference between the way that functional programmers and functional language implementors view program behaviour. Existing profiling techniques are discussed and a new technique is proposed which produces results that are straightforward for programmers to assimilate. The new technique, which we call lexical profiling, collects information about the run-time behaviour of functional programs, and reports the results with respect to the original source code rather than simply listing the actions performed at run-time. Lexical profiling complements implementation-specific profiling and is important because it provides a view of program activity which is largely independent of the underlying evaluation mechanism. Using the lexical profiler, programmers may easily relate results back to the source program. We give a full implementation of the lexical profiling technique for a sequential, interpretive graph reduction engine, and extensions for compiled and parallel graph reduction are discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service's State Wildlife Grant (SWG) Program was designed as a proactive species conservation program to aid state fish and wildlife agencies in preventing nonplant species from becoming listed as threatened or endangered (T&E) under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. In this paper, we use four criteria to evaluate whether the SWG Program can be considered successful: 1) value is created (increased) in the short term; 2) value is created (increased) in the long term; 3) the value created is public; and 4) the value created is the value that was intended per the original goals of the program. Our analysis indicates the SWG Program has added US $3 billion in short-term value to local economies and supported the creation of about 18,000 jobs between 2001 until 2015. We use the example of the whooping crane Grus americana to calculate the long-term value of this single T&E species as US $103.5 million annually and argue that the SWG Program helps to maintain this value through supported species-conservation activities. Next, we look at two instances of species receiving proactive SWG Program conservation dollars: the oblong rock snail Leptoxis compacta and several North American bat species (Chiroptera spp.). These species and the conservation actions that benefit them demonstrate how public value is created or maintained through services these species naturally provide that benefit human health and economic well-being. Finally, we evaluate whether the SWG Program is creating the value it was designed to create by showing that T&E spending (expenditure) growth rates decreased after the SWG Program began. We find that the decrease in spending does not correlate with fewer species being removed from consideration as a T&E candidate for listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, nor does spending correlate with fewer species being delisted (taken off the list) after being listed as T&E species. Allowing for a 5-y time lag, we are also able to show that the SWG Program has been used in 55% of T&E-listed species that were later delisted under the U.S. Endangered Species Act and 24% of candidate species later removed from consideration for T&E listing as a result of recovery or better information. We argue that these results demonstrate that the SWG Program meets or is potentially meeting all four criteria for an effective public program.

Abstract:
Substantial literature has examined the effectiveness of intimate partner violence (IPV) interventions, and cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is noted as the second most common approach used in group interventions for partner violent men. However, as little research has examined how CBT principles are operationalized across program curricula, there is currently insufficient information from which to make recommendations for model CBT approaches in IPV interventions. In the current study, we review the literature to determine a set of core elements for comprehensive CBT interventions and use session-level curriculum data from 10 community-based programs to examine the presence of 14 components reflecting 4 CBT factors. Results suggest heterogeneity in the emphasis on CBT elements across programs, despite almost all managers listing CBT as a theoretical approach. Implications are discussed with a call for evaluators and meta-analysts to code for actual curriculum content as opposed to stated program labels.

Abstract:
With a growing trend in the popularity of web-based resources, it is important to evaluate residency program websites for providing accurate information for dermatology residency applicants. Little is known about the quality of dermatology residency websites in Taiwan. The aim of the study is to assesses the quality of official websites of dermatology training programs in Taiwan. A literature search for all related studies from inception to 31 July 2020 was performed using PubMed without restriction on language. We used criteria that had 6 domains and 25 items to evaluate 23 official websites of the dermatology training programs in Taiwan from August to September 2020. Of the 23 training programs, only 6 (26%) of the websites met more than half of the criteria. Notably, the items “features of the department” and “comprehensive faculty listing” were included in all websites. The criteria for interview process, board pass rates, social activities and information on the surrounding area were not met by all websites. Evidently, there is much room for improvement for the dermatology training program websites in Taiwan.

Abstract:
Ecocentric education programs should include a method for the in-depth understanding of multi-scale ecological time concepts. To accomplish this, the common restriction that ecocentric education should pertain only to realistic nature may have to be removed. The purpose of this research was to confirm the validity of a program featuring phenology observation, employing fixed-point time-lapse images as climate change learning, and to obtain suggestions on the influence of the program on the multi-timescale concepts of the learners. An observation sheet listing images of cherry flowering from 16 April to 15 March each year from 1996 to 2017 was created, and the 50-min educational program using the observation sheet was conducted with 189 third year junior high school students. The tendencies among students’ answers to the two questions before and after the program suggest that the program contributed to the students acquiring the hundreds-year timescale concept based on the short-term timescale concept of dynamic nature. The contribution of this research is to visualize long-term and multi-scale ecological time concepts. By combining long-term time-lapse images with everyday nature experiences, the possibility of expanding such emotions as wonder and attachment to nature towards a long-term ecological timescale is achieved.

Abstract:
This study aimed to explore attentional foci and their temporal patterns in expert skaters in real competition situations. Individual self-confrontation interviews were held with 8 expert figure skaters while they watched their videotaped program performed in official competitions. Qualitative data analysis revealed that skaters used a substantial number of foci, which were classified by content and characteristics. Event listing was used to display the patterns of foci over time, revealing that skaters used distinct processes to prepare for, perform, and evaluate different program elements. These results highlighted the great flexibility and variability of attentional focus, according to circumstantial factors.

Abstract:
Background: The content and accessibility of foot and ankle fellowship websites impact applicants and fellowship programs. This study aimed to evaluate the accessibility provided via the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society (AOFAS) websites and individual websites. Methods: The AOFAS website was used to identify existing foot and ankle fellowship programs. The database information was reviewed for links to fellowship program websites, which was corroborated through a Google search for accessibility. Information from fellowship program websites and the AOFAS was analyzed for the presence of recruitment and educational content, and this analysis was compared to previously reported metrics. Results: Forty-eight orthopedic foot and ankle fellowship programs were identified. The AOFAS database featured direct links to 19 (40%) fellowship websites with the Google search providing direct links to 35 (73%) websites. Foot and ankle fellowship information markedly improved in domains of Salary/Benefits (+233%), Rotations/Curriculum (+199%), and Faculty Listing (+67%), but there was a reduction in available content in the domains of Operative Experience (–79%), Office/Clinic information (–78%), and Didactics (–39%) compared with the lone existing study. Conclusion: There continues to be variability between foot and ankle fellowship websites and the AOFAS website regarding program content and descriptions. Some information is more readily available, but other domains have less information now than in previously reported research.

Abstract:
PURPOSE:Prospective hematology-oncology fellowship applicants use program Web sites as a critical source of information. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the current content and comprehensiveness of hematology-oncology fellowship Web sites and to identify specific areas for improvement.METHODS:This study assessed the presence of 27 commonly evaluated program and application and curriculum and training informational items for Web sites of all accredited hematology-oncology fellowship programs in 2018. The comprehensiveness score was calculated as the number of items present on a fellowship Web site out of 27 and was compared by program region and size using analysis of variance and two-tailed t tests.RESULTS:Of the 143 fellowship Web sites evaluated, the mean comprehensiveness score was 39.3% (10.6 ± 3.8 out of 27). Programs contained a mean of 42.1% (5.9 ± 2.3 out of 14) of program and application and 36.2% (4.7 ± 2.1 out of 13) of curriculum and training items. The program and application items most common among Web sites were program coordinator contact and faculty listing (83.2% and 74.1% of Web sites, respectively), whereas social events and salary and benefits were less common (31.5% and 20.3% of Web sites, respectively). Prevalent curriculum and training items were research publications and activity and rotation scheduling (86.0% and 81.1% of Web sites, respectively), whereas board examination pass rates and fellow call duties were uncommon (4.2% and 15.4% of Web sites, respectively). Large programs were associated with greater overall Web site items compared with small programs (43.0% [11.6 ± 4.1 out of 27] v 35.9% [9.7 ± 3.3 out of 27]; P = .003).CONCLUSION:Hematology-oncology fellowship Web sites vary considerably in the level and nature of content they contain. Because applicants rely on online information for decision making, more comprehensive online content may promote a better fit between program and applicant. There is room for improvement in hematology-oncology fellowship Web sites, and programs may consider directing resources toward enhancing these Web sites.

Abstract:
Despite the availability of antifibrotic therapies, many patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) will progress to advanced disease and require lung transplantation. International guidelines for transplant referral and listing of patients with interstitial lung disease are not specific to those with IPF and were published before the widespread use of antifibrotic therapy. In this review, we discussed difficulties in decision-making when dealing with patients with IPF due to the wide variability in clinical course and life expectancy, as well as the acute deterioration associated with exacerbations. Indeed, the ideal timing for referral and listing for lung transplant remains challenging, and the acute deterioration might be influenced after transplant outcomes. Of note, patients with IPF are frequently affected by multimorbidity, thus a screening program for occurring conditions, such as coronary artery disease and pulmonary hypertension, before lung transplant listing is crucial to candidate selection, risk stratification, and optimal outcomes. Among several comorbidities, it is of extreme importance to highlight that the prevalence of lung cancer is increased amongst patients affected by IPF; therefore, candidates’ surveillance is critical to avoid organ allocation to unsuitable patients. For all these reasons, early referral and close longitudinal follow-up for potential lung transplant candidates are widely encouraged.

Abstract:
Context: Limited literature explores professional preparation of program directors (PD) to lead an athletic training education program (ATEP). Objective: To explore challenges, effectiveness, leadership, and PD role selection. Design: Descriptive and qualitative exploratory email survey. Setting: Educational. Participants: Emails were sent to 345 PDs from a Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE) listing. Main Outcome Measure(s): Measures of central tendency were used to observe years of experience, role selection (applied versus appointed), education level, and gender. Program Director effectiveness, leadership, and challenges were grouped according to common themes. Results: Most PDs (82.5%; n = 99) reported having one to ten years of experience. Mean years of experience was 7.46 (±6.36) years. A majority, 61.7% (n = 74), reported having applied for their position. Educationally, 54.2% (n = 65) held doctoral degrees compared to 45.8% (n = 55) whose highest degree was a masters degree. Six themes emerged for PD effectiveness and challenges. Lastly, seven themes regarding leadership were described. Conclusions: Program Directors should approach their role with savvy, caring, and humanistic attitudes, developed by professional preparation. Firm in their convictions and vision, PDs also are viewed as empathetic advocates for students. Program Directors play a critical role in the advocacy of the profession within institutions of higher education through professional preparation of students. Several themes pertaining to professional preparation of PDs may positively impact the profession. Future PD's should seek educational programs that prepare them for these challenges of the position, such as professional preparation in education and higher administration or curriculum and instruction.

Eakin, Michael. "Assessing the distribution and abundance of larval Longfin Smelt: What can a larval monitoring program tell us about the distribution of a rare species?" California Fish and Wildlife Journal, CESA Special Issue (June 6, 2021): 182–202. http://dx.doi.org/10.51492/cfwj.cesasi.9.

Full text
Abstract:
Following its listing as threatened under the California Endangered Species Act in 2009, Longfin Smelt (Spirinchus thaleichthys) became a focus of resource managers in the San Francisco Estuary. Water exports were identified as one of the factors affecting Longfin Smelt abundance, and managers were challenged with balancing freshwater flows through the Sacramento-San Joaquin River Delta between human and ecosystem needs. This balance becomes especially challenging during the winter and spring when Longfin Smelt are spawning. Resource managers identified that the impact associated with entrainment of larval Longfin Smelt in the winter was uncertain, and to understand and manage this risk, new data was needed. In 2009 the Smelt Larva Survey was implemented and has since sampled newly hatched larvae from January–March. Here, I analyze this data and ask specific questions regarding distribution and densities of the larvae throughout five regions of the Upper Estuary – Napa River, Suisun, Confluence, Northern Delta, and Southern Delta – with the goal of understanding the spatial and temporal patterns of larval distribution since 2009. I found that larvae were most prevalent in the Suisun, Confluence, and Northern Delta regions, and less common in the Southern Delta and Napa River regions. Larval Longfin Smelt densities changed following a recent drought and record low population abundances. Median per-station averaged densities ranged from 154 to 274 fish per 1,000 m3 between 2009 and 2013 but declined to 1 to 65 fish per 1,000 m3 from 2014 to 2019. This survey data demonstrates that Longfin Smelt reproductive output has declined since their listing in 2009 and that their distribution into the Southern Delta is low relative to the rest of the Upper Estuary. These results reaffirm the species’ continued decline since its listing, and that improving the abundance of spawning adults is one of the many important steps needed for long-term recovery and resilience.

Abstract:
Background and context: Breast cancer is the number one cancer in the Philippines. It has 20,267 new cases a year representing nearly 20% of all new cancer cases. The few government medical access programs for the poor cater to patients with early stage breast cancer. Yet there is no access to free breast cancer screening. There has been a bias against women with advance and metastatic breast cancer (mbc) in terms of medical access programs and support services. Most assume that the needs of breast cancer patients with late stage cancer are the same as those with early stage. The ICANSERVE Foundation would like to identify the needs of patients with advance and mbc and know the resources available to them. Only one city in the country has community-based patient navigators. Their orientation has been geared toward the newly diagnosed with early stage breast cancer. The project will involve retraining of these navigators to include the unique needs of patients with advance and mbc. A new batch of navigators will be trained from other cities. ICANSERVE will try to convince these partner cities to institutionalize patient navigation through local legislation. Aim: To identify the needs of women with late stage breast cancer and mbc; to make a listing of available resources to them; for patient navigators to encourage women who are in remission to go for regular check-ups to monitor the possibility of a recurrence; to institutionalize a patient navigation program for breast cancer patients through legislation Strategy/Tactics: The patient navigation training and retraining will be conducted with existing partners of ICANSERVE so the buy in is faster. ICANSERVE will ask the help of its other partner, the influential Metro Manila Mayors' Spouses Foundation, to convince its member cities to institutionalize the navigation program. Program/Policy process: A research agency will conduct interviews with 12 women with late stage or mbc to know their needs. Research will be done to study the available resources for them. Brochures and media releases will be produced listing these resources. A patient navigation training course shall be conducted for 10 navigators representing 4 cities. Discussions will be made with city officials to convince them to institutionalize the patient navigation program. Outcomes: Anticipated outcomes: A study on the needs of women with advanced and mbc, a first for the country, can be a basis for government to provide programs responsive to these patients. The study can make patient navigators more attuned to their needs. Navigators can lead the way in showing these patients must not be discriminated. They can still be productive members of society. Knowing where help is available, navigators can offer clearer patient pathways. Hopefully the patient navigation program can be institutionalized through a local law.

Abstract:
A brief listing of five different types of mathematical literacy is provided. The definition used by the Program for International Student Assessment (PISA) is selected and some brief remarks are provided on this program. The performance of Australian students is examined which shows that at the beginning of the new century 2000, Australian educators were feeling comfortable and reasonably satisfied with student performance but by 2016there was great concern over a consistent decline. The reasons for this decline are briefly discussed with the focus on Australian governmental policies that followed the directions of reform in the United States and Great Britain, and what has been labelled GERM. Current policies have been tried and failed and it is time to look for alternatives. While it is not wise to just copy the programs and policies of another country rather than adapt them due to differences in culture, population diversity, and other factors, nevertheless countries such as Finland can offer alternative paths to be explored. In Australia’s case it would also seem to be unwise to adopt policies and programs of countries who perform worse than it.

Abstract:
Cost estimating and job bidding are among the most complex and time-consuming tasks of landscape professionals. A software package was developed to make cost estimating more accurate and efficient. HORT LAND, computer cost estimator for landscape installation, was developed for IBM compatible PC's using SuperCalc 5 spreadsheet software. The user builds a series of data bases, including an items listing of materials and equipment utilized in his operation along with their associated cost. Then, he defines a series of generic tasks, such as planting a 1-gallon size plant, and refers to the previous items list and associated code numbers for the materials and equipment necessary to install the plant. Once these initial data bases are constructed and saved, the user inputs a plant list, including size and price, then instructs the computer to translate the appropriate data from the initial data bases to arrive at a detailed listing of costs. The program then computes direct job cost and bid price, including overhead and profit.

Abstract:
The Committee (acronym: SKOZK) was established in 1978, following listing Krakow as a world heritage site. It fulfilled expectations from the past, when heritage assets were damaged by industrial pollution and state ideology curtailed financing of works on sacred and private grounds. An undoubted strength of the early time was the recognition of Krakow heritage protection as a matter of state importance, while the domination of political circumstances remained a weakness. The political transformation of 1989/90 changed the environment: SKOZK was now dominated by heritage preservation milieus, and members were appointed by the President of the Republic of Poland, and his Chancellery provided a major part of financial means. As grants generally cover up to 50% of the cost, the fund has a stimulating role as beneficiaries need to find sources for matching funds. Since 1990, the Committee’s activity has concentrated on the most valuable complexes: Wawel, the historical centre of the city, former town of Kazimierz with Jewish quarter, and the most treasurable enclaves situated on the outskirts of the city.Achievements of SKOZK include development of a model for cooperation between private (NGO) and public (central and territorial authorities) sectors, definition of strategic goals, and a priority of the ensuing tasks.

Abstract:
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Alcoholic liver disease (ALD) is a controversial yet established indication for liver transplantation (LT), and there is emerging evidence supporting a survival benefit in selected patients with severe acute alcoholic hepatitis. The aim of the present survey was to describe policies among Canadian transplant centres for patients with ALD.METHODS: A survey was distributed to the medical directors of all seven liver transplant centres in Canada.RESULTS: All seven liver transplant programs in Canada participated in the survey. Every centre requires patients to have a minimum of six months of abstinence from alcohol before listing for LT. Completion of a rehabilitation program is only mandatory in one program; the remaining programs do not mandate this if patients have demonstrated prolonged abstinence, and sufficient insight and social supports. No program considers LT for patients with severe acute alcoholic hepatitis, although six of the seven programs are interested in exploring a national policy. Random alcohol checks for waitlisted patients are performed routinely on patients listed for ALD at only one centre; the remaining centres only perform checks if there is clinical suspicion. In the past five years, the mean (± SD) number of patients per centre with graft dysfunction from recidivism was 10±4.36; a mean of 2.5±4.36 patients per centre developed graft failure.CONCLUSIONS: With minor exceptions, LT policies for subjects with ALD are uniform across Canadian transplant programs. Presently, no centres perform LT for acute alcoholic hepatitis, although there is broad interest in exploring a national policy. Recidivism resulting in graft loss is a rare phenomenon.

Abstract:
Linguistic variation derives from properties of the physical and conceptual make-up of human beings which were adapted to produce language. This adaptative approach is contrasted with the Minimalist Program, in which properties specific to language are said to be different from anything found in the organic world (Chomsky 1995). Six basic cases are compared. Whereas the analysis in the Minimalist Program is ultimately a listing of construction-specific features, the adaptative approach relies on properties of the initial state which are logically prior to linguistic theory and provide a strong basis for causal relations that explain why languages vary, and why they vary in the particular ways they do in these six cases.

The Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers formed its Ship Production Committee (SPC) in 1970 to address research and development in the ship production field. The Merchant Marine Act of 1936, as amended in 1970, charged the Secretary of Commerce to "collaborate with … shipbuilders in developing plans for the economic construction of vessels." The Maritime Administration selected the newly formed Ship Production Committee to provide industry management and technical input. The resulting cooperative effort has become known as the National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP). This paper provides a brief history of the SPC and the NSRP, notes the growing need for technical input to the program and shows how the SPC is changing to meet evolving ship production research demands and opportunities. Appendix A lists projects underway and planned. Appendix Β is a listing of project reports covering work completed under the National Shipbuilding Research Program.

Abstract:
Public scrutiny about faculty time commitment have brought professor accountability to the front page of the daily newspapers. Many faculty in agricultural colleges at Land Grant Universities have split appointments in either research, teaching or extension. Effectiveness has been traditionally demonstrated in research by listing of publications, grants, graduate students. and presentations; but these measures are not necessarily appropriate measures for teaching. The need to better document teaching is imperative and a simple listing of classes taught and number of student contact hours can no longer be sole measures of teaching effectiveness. The Teaching Portfolio is a factual description of a professor's strengths and accomplishments. It includes documents and materials that collectively suggest the scope and quality of a professor's teaching performance. The Teaching Portfolio is an important tool for all Land Grant faculty, regardless of their teaching responsibilities. As pan of a ESCOP/ACOP Leadership Program at Clemson University, we have been reevaluating how university faculty are evaluated. We will discuss our experiences in introducing and using the Teaching Portfolio as part of a new evaluation process.

Abstract:
Two recent articles in the Mathematics Teacher have described methods of finding the roots of polynomials by use of the computer (Kimberling 1985a, 1985b). Of the two methods presented, the half interval search is more acceptable to students, since it does not require a knowledge of the calculus. Both techniques approximate roots to a high degree of accuracy, but neither of these techniques supplies exact rational roots. Students who use these methods a re often concerned to find that a root of 0.5 may be approximated as 0.499999 or that a root of 3 is approximated as 2.99999. The question arises as to whether or not these rational roots can be found on the computer and printed as rational numbers. Using a topic that many of my students study in second-year algebra, the rational-root theorem, it is possible to write the desired program. A complete program listing is shown in program 1

Abstract:
The objectives of Kentucky's Sustainable Nursery Production Practices Extension Program are for 1) the Kentucky nursery industry to continue sustained growth and 2) Kentucky growers to produce high quality plants, efficiently use pesticides, be stewards of their land and Kentucky's environment. Sustainable Nursery Program Components are 1) Integrated Pest Management (IPM): Nursery Scouting, Scout Training and Scouting Education for growers, Extension workers, and students; 2) Best Management Practice (BMP) Workshops: BMP VI: Disease Demolition Workshop; 3) Production Practice Demonstration: Pruning Training, Pesticide Handling, and Safety and Environmental Stewartship. 4.) Research: Pruning protocols; Media and media amendments; Precision Fertilization and Irrigation. The Kentucky Nursery Crops Scouting Program scouting guidelines were developed and contained: a weekly scouting/trapping guide; a listing of which pests to look for and on what host plants, and a detailed methodology of precisely how to look for the pest, its damage, and how to record this information such that comparisons could be made across nurseries and seasons.

Abstract:
An integrated computer system consisting of an expandable ionanalyzer and a PC has been used to automate concentration measurements with ion-selective electrodes (ISEs). The ionanalyzer determines ionic concentrations using a reference electrode coupled with an ISE. The measurements and calibrations are carried out in a thermostated sample changer equipped with a flow cell. The data obtained by the ionanalyzer are sent via a standard RS 232-C interface to a microcomputer. In this paper, we describe the automatic data acquisition system and the subsequent processing of the measurements. One program (Transorion) automatically collects the measurements carried out by the ionanalyzer, giving a real-time graphic representation of the measurement on the computer screen. A second program (Graforion) facilitates the management of the data stored by the first program, and listing and graphics of these can be obtained on the printer/plotter. The method has been used to study continuous concentration changes in an aqueous solution of potassium iodide.
