Abstract:

Nigeria is a country blessed with human and natural resources; but, due to the miss-management of her resources, Nigeria is crippled with massive unemployment an issue that continues to exact a considerable toll on its socio-economic prospects. The population that is mostly affected with the situation is the youth, who are unable to secure decent employment and progress in life. The immediate symptoms of the socio-economic situation in the country are evident in the palpable rise in organized crime, armed insurgency, vandalism, terrorism, kidnapping and drug trafficking. Given the abundant natural and human resources that Nigeria possesses, she can attain her full potential and bring development to the citizens by overcoming the following challenges: poor utilization of oil money, bridging the widening gap between the urban rich and the rural poor, and encouraging talented Nigerians to stay in the country. To respond adequately to the challenges, the present leadership style has to change, and a new form of learning and engaging people in leadership is required. The proposed group presented in this

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, Technology and Policy Program, 2004.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves [57]-58).
This research focuses on two specific research problems in the context of innovation in the biotech industry. These research problems map to the two phases of innovation process--creation of new scientific expertise (Phase I) and commercialization of that new expertise (Phase II). The research problem in Phase I, examines determinants of productivity in the creation of new scientific expertise, specifically following scholarship in the sociology of networks, assessing the impact of patterns of scientific research networks on research productivity. The setting for the study is a group of research scientists associated with the Du Pont-MIT Alliance. Findings suggest that optimal research networks should have a large number of relatively strong links and avoid over-dependence on a few research collaborators, to enhance research productivity. With respect to Phase II and the transformation of scientific ideas into commercial products, existing innovation literature has identified several ingredients for commercial success, and in particular, for start-up ventures: reputed management teams, BODs (Board of Directors), SABs (Scientific Advisory Boards) and prominent VC (venture capital) firms. However the relative influence of the inventor's reputation versus the quality of the research idea in assembling these necessary constituents has not been researched. The study sample for the research problem under Phase II, consisted of all the biotech start-ups in the Massachusetts area, founded after 1995. The research findings highlight the usage of 'signaling' (reputation in this case) in assembling reputed teams. The study also shows diminishing returns to such signaling as the uncertainty reduces. The implications of these finding can be broadly drawn
(cont.) at the level of technology policy and at the unit level of a firm. Technology policy can influence the organization of university research networks as well as make funding allocation decisions. Individual firms can use these results to shape their collaboration with academia. The results also send a strong signal that if a research idea attains prominence, it can be successfully commercialized regardless of the inventor reputation.
by Vishwanath Kanda.
S.M.

An open question is how individual cells collectively generate force to achieve the correct tissue architecture. This thesis examines how the apical forces generated by Drosophila ventral furrow cells undergoing collective apical constriction are coordinated to fold the tissue. In Chapter 2, I investigate how discrete actomyosin contraction events are coordinated in time and between neighboring cells to yield tissue contraction and folding. I developed a computational pipeline to identify and classify contraction events from live images of ventral furrow formation. Using this framework, I found heterogeneity in contraction events, both in terms of contraction intensity as well as apical area behavior. I found that apical constricting cells transition in contractile behavior over time, from undergoing reversible contractions into a ratcheted state where contractions are irreversible. High expression of the transcription factor Twist is required for the transition into this irreversible, ratcheted state, which is associated with more neighboring contractions as well as cooperative interactions between neighbors. In Chapter 3, I examined how contractility is buffered against heterogeneity in cell apical area. I found that Cta-signaling is required to robustly maintain apical Factin cortex that can support contracting over larger apical distances. Without this buffering, apically larger cells progressively lose apical F-actin and exhibit delayed initiation of actomyosin contractions, leading to a lack of coordinated constriction.
by Shicong Xie.
Ph. Sausman, Christopher. "Social capital formation in global value chains : evidence from Peru's Alternative Development Program." Thesis, University of Kent, 2016. https://kar.kent.ac.uk/54549/.

Full text
Abstract:
Social capital is a rich topic in the development literature. Despite this, there is an incomplete understanding of how social capital is formed when placed within the enabling or constraining structure of Global Value Chains. While governance of Global Value Chains is well understood as a powerful force that shapes the participation of farmers, the literature to date has not effectively explored the extent to which governance may shape participation among farmers. The aim of this thesis is to explore how, if at all, governance shapes the formation of two types of farmers' social capital: structural and cognitive. Within the context of Peru's Alternative Development Program, where there is a purposeful effort to develop the social capital of farmers, qualitative research was conducted on two case study Global Value Chains: cacao and palm oil. Interviews were conducted with stakeholders across the Global Value Chain, from farmers and collective organisations to exporters and importers. The case studies revealed that governance can be an enabler of structural social capital formation, but its role is shaped by the institutional context and existing attitudes towards social structure. Governance can be an enabler or barrier to cognitive social capital formation, depending on the nature of the governing relationship between buyer and supplier. To date, the literature on social capital formation has typically focused on factors internal to a collective group. The findings in the thesis shed light on the role of exogenous structures on the formation of social capital.

Abstract:
(Senge, 1991)
There has been a notorious increase in the interest of researchers in France and around Europe and the rest of the world to understand, conceptualize and identify a kind of specific relational competency of international managers which would allow them to be better prepared to succeed a expatriation, a short-term international assignment, an international joint venture, and a post-merger, post-acquisition process. This competency is sought to be identified in the individual’s sphere within organizations that would help these ones to go through every process of change involving the direct confrontation of cultures and sub-cultures idiosyncratic to different contexts. (Spreitzer, G. M. , McCall, M. W. Et Mahoney, J. D, 1997 ; Ang et Earley, 200 ;Pierre, 2005, Calvez et Lee, 2008) This doctoral dissertation presents the main results of a case study undertaken under the preconizations of the Constructivist Version of Grounded Theory (Charmaz, 2006). Main results have allowed me to come out with six types of Intercultural Learning that take place within different patterns of interactions engaged amongst the participants of a seminar taking place within the Corporate University’s scope. I could also verify that in addition to this competency development, the organization could by means of its corporate university to encourage the construction its identity (Albert & Whetten, 1985 Schutz and alii. 2000, Sjödin and Wahlin, 2004) and would succeed to implement the consolidation of a shared vision (Senge, 1991)

Abstract:
Thesis: S.M., Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Engineering, Center for Computational Engineering, Computation for Design and Optimization Program, 2015.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (pages 45-47).
Geologic C0₂ sequestration is considered a promising tool to reduce anthropogenic C0₂ emissions while allowing continued use of fossil fuels for the current time. The process entails capturing C0₂ at point sources such as coal-fired power plants, and injecting it in its supercritical state into deep saline aquifers for long-term storage. Upon injection, C0₂ partially dissolves in groundwater to form an aqueous solution that is denser than groundwater. The local increase in density triggers a gravitational instability at the boundary layer that further develops into columnar C0₂-rich plumes that sink away. This mechanism, also known as convective mixing, greatly accelerates the dissolution rate of C0₂ into water and provides secure storage of C0₂ underground. Understanding convective mixing in the context of C0₂ sequestration is essential for the design of injection and monitoring strategies that prevent leakage of C0₂ back into the atmosphere. While current studies have elucidated various aspects of this phenomenon in 2D, little is known about this process in 3D. In this thesis we investigate the pattern-formation aspects of convective mixing during geological C0₂ sequestration by means of high-resolution three-dimensional simulation. We find that the C0₂ concentration field self-organizes as a cellular network structure in the diffusive boundary layer right beneath the top boundary. By studying the statistics of the cellular network, we identify various regimes of finger coarsening over time, the existence of a nonequilibrium stationary state, and an universal scaling of 3D convective mixing. We explore the correlation between the observed network pattern and the 3D flow structure predicted by hydrodynamics stability theory.
by Xiaojing Fu.
S.M.

Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is to construct a model for evaluating training programs and to check its relevance by confronting it with empirical data. We conducted this intervention-research in the framework of a call for proposals and evaluated a social experiment bearing the characteristics of a training program. Within this context of commissioned research, we explain the emergence of an area for the research and articulation of a social dimension (for praxeological purposes) and an academic dimension (for heuristic purposes). The evaluation model is based on the method of accountability but also on the development of the actors involved. It mobilizes two different methodological orientations: “acquiring knowledge to objectify” and “acquiring knowledge to interpret”. The first takes a quantitative approach and measures the efficiency of the program; the second completes the first and facilitates its interpretation. The second orientation takes a qualitative approach measuring the cognitive developments of the training beneficiaries, characterizing the unexpected effects and efficiency as perceived by the actors involved. Thanks to the data analysis, we have been able to consolidate certain elements of the model, highlight some of its limits and offer some leverage points to help stabilize it. We propose adding a component to the second orientation “acquiring knowledge to interpret”, in order to focus on the analysis of change in the implementation of the program. Likewise, we provide five methodological, axiological, heuristic, epistemological and political leverage points which strengthen the general coherence of the model. The evaluation model has withstood the confrontation with empirical data

Thesis (Ph. At the same time, the Internet offers services to both research and contact other individuals. As a result, proactive computer savvy singles are logging on to find romantic partners. While the online dating industry advertises its success citing the large number of registered users, other evidence indicates broad dissatisfaction: the analysis of website behavior reveals that most users are inactive and experienced online daters state a preference for dating offline versus on. To account for this dissatisfaction, I locate decision-point failures. To improve the process, I propose and test an alternate model. Part 1 shows that acquiring more information - one of the perceived benefits of meeting online and reading profiles - can have negative effects, such as leading to less liking over time, while failing to make people really believe they know others better. The expectation that getting to know others more will lead to more liking, coupled with the fact that more information leads to less liking, means that online daters are frequently disappointed, causing them to leave dating sites, and to continue to prefer offline dating despite its drawbacks.
(cont.) Part 2 focuses on interventions to improve the online dating experience, making it more similar to life offline through the introduction of "virtual dates" where people "pre-meet" online before they meet face-to-face. In particular, these interventions are targeted at mitigating the overly positive expectations online daters who only read profiles have, bringing expectations for dates more in line with reality, leading to less disappointment- and possibly increased likelihood of finding a match.
by Jena H. Nattinger, Matthew C. "Examining the formation of Medicaid elderly 1915(c) waivers." Diss., University of Iowa, 2016. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/2248.

Full text
Abstract:
Older individuals overwhelmingly prefer to receive long-term services and supports (LTSS) in home and community-based settings. Medicaid elderly 1915(c) waivers have become the primary mechanism that states use to provide home and community-based services (HCBS) to older individuals. Given the positive effects elderly waivers have on the quality of life of older individuals, I examined why states adopt elderly waivers; the extent of the substantive differences in program quality across elderly waivers; and the factors associated with elderly waiver program quality, contrasted with the factors associated with elderly waiver program size (i.e., number of participants and expenditures). I examined how state contextual, institutional, and political factors, as well as factors external to the states, including neighboring state and federal policy activity, influenced state policy decisions pertaining to elderly waiver adoptions and program quality and size. First, I performed a retrospective analysis using state-level longitudinal data from 1992-2010 to conduct a discrete time-series repeated event history analysis (EHA) to identify the variables associated with state adoptions of elderly waivers. Second, I created a measure of elderly waiver program quality consisting of four equally weighted components of waivers thought to be associated with the provision of higher quality HCBS to older individuals, including: eligibility criteria, self-determination supports, range of services provided, and participant protections. Using correlational analyses, I examined the relationships between program quality and size. Third, I performed retrospective ordinary least squares (OLS) analyses using waiver program-level data from 2015 to examine elderly waiver program quality and size and fixed-effects OLS using data from 1993-2010 to examine elderly waiver program size. I identified 63 elderly waiver adoptions across 35 states between 1992 and 2010, which were significantly associated with state contextual and external factors. Consistent with previous research, I found that contextual factors, including the number of older individuals, the supply of long-term care facilities and whether the state already had an elderly waiver program, affected state decisions to adopt elderly waivers. There was significant variation in each of the four component and overall quality scores and weak associations between program quality and size. I found that state contextual factors, including market and Medicaid program characteristics, influenced elderly waiver program quality and size. In addition, program quality was shaped by the capacity of state policymaking institutions (e.g., governorships and legislatures), while program size was shaped by neighboring state and federal policy activity. The findings from this research suggest that elderly waiver adoptions and program quality and size are shaped through different policymaking pathways. Efforts to improve the quality of elderly waiver programs should consider the capacity of state executive officials in addition to contextual determinants and focus on improving existing elderly waiver programs. Given that most waivers scored well on eligibility and participant protections, efforts to improve the quality of elderly waiver programs should focus on expanding self-direction supports opportunities, the types of waiver services, and eliminating restrictions placed on service delivery (e.g., waiting lists).

Abstract:
The mechanism of development program formation for territorial community based on the cluster approach has been offered. The mechanism is based on a conceptual cluster model of programs. This model includes four clusters: cluster of objects that form the capability of territorial community, cluster of objects that form "overcapability" of the community; cluster of objects that define the focus area of the territorial community; and a cluster of objects that do not meet the overall focus area of local community, but generate some profit. Based on different cluster layout in program, four versions of a mathematical model of the program have been developed.

This thesis examines the continually reconfiguring response of a youth organization towards a renovation project, Järvalyftet, run by the City of Stockholm in the Million Program suburbs. By analyzing this relationship, I aim to discuss how the youth organization works to mediate inclusion in political and representational spheres. More specifically, I will discuss the intersections between Järvalyftet’s development and the claims of belonging made by the youths upon the particular suburb, Husby, where they resided. My interest lies in understanding the conjuncture and disjuncture of claims that have been made to community, locality, and local knowledge in the interaction between the youth organization and the project Järvalyftet. I argue that the forms of community instigated by the youth organization, which were based on locality and “blackness”, allowed them to position themselves as key proponents of social and political change, as well as mobilize allies in others who identified with those experiences.

Abstract:
In recent times Spiritual Direction has grown in popularity amongst lay people seeking to nurture their own spirituality. This trend has given rise to an increased enrolment of people seeking to train as Spiritual Directors. This study aims to identify key factors underpinning the learning processes in a spiritual direction curriculum program that is part of a graduate course offered by an Australian University. Having identified the factors, the researcher will assess its effectiveness in forming spiritual directors, from the perspective of participants involved in the program. This qualitative study was based on the insights of adults who are already qualified spiritual directors trained in this particular spiritual direction formation program or are current participants in the same program. Their perceptions of the course were drawn upon to investigate the impact of their curriculum program on the formation of spiritual directors. Unstructured in depth interviews were utilized to gain the perspectives of participants. The original principles of grounded theory (Glaser & Strauss, 1967) were drawn upon to identify, conceptualize and analyze key insights into the learning processes associated with one spiritual direction curriculum with a view to identifying an emerging theory. Based on the emerging theory, this timely study aimed to ascertain the implications for improvement of both the design and delivery of learning processes within spiritual direction courses, and ongoing professional development offerings. The findings indicated that the approach to formation was enhanced by the development of collegial, interactive learning spaces in which participants’ relational qualities were influential in shaping these spaces. The qualities of trust, openness, vulnerability and integrity were identified as the core relational factors that contributed to the enhancement of the interactive learning spaces generated between the participants. Contemplative processing of learning was extended when participants adopted these relational qualities when reflectively and critically engaging with experiences. Used in combination with the principles and processes of Lectio Divina (Binz, 2008) and Theory U (Scharmer, 2009), participants’ relational qualities promoted the broadening and deepening of the formational learning process. The influence of formators was significant in demonstrating the application of the relational qualities in the way they taught and participated in the learning process. The formators continued to maintain their authority and leadership of the learning process in conjunction their enactment of the relational qualities through collegial engagement. The promotion of a range of approaches to safety resulted from participants’ willingness to cooperatively apply the qualities of trust, openness, vulnerability and integrity with each other within the diverse learning community. Based on these findings, the implications of the emerging theory were presented that offer ways in which these findings can be applied within a range of formation programs to enhance participants’ learning opportunities. One recommendation for further research focused on the possibility of exploring spiritual direction formation programs associated with other traditions or which have a different emphasis. Another suggestion for further research would be to explore spiritual direction formation programs from the formators’ perspective.

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Michael Barnett
This dissertation documents the pilot year of an Art Science Program. This study asks: what is possible when we create learning environments modeled for the integration of theatre and other artistic media with science? What, in general, are the affordances of theatre and other art forms for fostering such meaning-making, what are good ways to make it happen, and what are the challenges? We analyze young learners’ participation and attitude changes in the context of the Art Science Program. Findings indicate that (1) access to identity resources impacts learners’ practice-linked identities (Nasir & Cooks, 2009); (2) face-saving behaviors impact practice-linked identities by inhibiting learners’ access to identity resources; (3) the development of practice-linked identities parallels the development of possible selves; (4) the extent to which a learner is able to engage in their learning as a “whole person” (Wenger, 2006) is correlated with a learner’s identity trajectory; (5) learners may fail to form new practice-linked identities despite robust access to identity resources; and (6) learners may succeed in forming new practice-linked identities despite lack of significant access to identity resources because the identity resources that they do access provide a strong hook into new, nascent practice-linked identities
Thesis (PhD) — Boston College, 2020
Submitted to: Boston College. Abstract:
Thesis (S.M. in Technology and Policy)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2010.
Cataloged from PDF version of thesis.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 70-73).
The Massachusetts life sciences supercluster is a source of tremendous innovation. The Commonwealth's academic and industrial institutions produce a consistent stream of cutting-edge scientific research and the region has a well-developed professional and financial infrastructure to support the translation of these ideas into useful products. Venture capital (VC) plays a particularly important role in this ecosystem. VC funding is essential to most life sciences companies due to their high research and development costs and long time to market. The economic downturn of 2008 led to a rapid and significant contraction in the ability of venture capital firms to raise the funding that supports their work. We use this setting to test the impact of a funding shock on life sciences focused venture capital resource allocation. Specifically we looked at the rate and direction of funding choices made by venture capitalists before and after the downturn. We analyzed data on yearly venture capital fundraising and 22,345 observations of investment dyads between venture capital firms and the portfolio companies which they invested in from the ten year period beginning in the year 2000. Additionally, seventy-six interviews with stakeholders in the Massachusetts life sciences community were conducted to help us understand the actual impact of data trends. This resulted in four major findings: (1) Although all venture capital fundraising was hindered in 2008 and 2009, life sciences focused venture funds were impacted disproportionately lightly in 2008 and disproportionately severely in 2009. (2) There has been a decline in the mean level of venture capital funding that companies are receiving. (3) The rate of new company formation is slowing as the rate of reinvestment in existing companies increases. (4) Innovation is being negatively impacted as fewer new companies translate technology into useful products and existing companies scale back their research and development pipelines.
by Avidon M. The qualitative research was set under a study case. It was used an epistemological reference about the social-semiotics nature of the language, the text and reading socio-cultural conceptions, and the docent formation. The procedures applied in the data collection were the documental analysis and interviews semi-structured with three docents responsible for the referred Program, who are active in schools of full-time Education in a county in the country side of Sao Paulo. Among the results obtained, it’s highlighted the fragilities in the conditions offered by the State, which get to the point of compromising the performance of the attributions given to the teacher responsible for the Program. However, from the evaluative point of view of the three docents participating in the research, a fascination discourse emerged from the participation in the Program, and of understanding that the continuing formation has made “good results” possible in the practice of reading works. This discourse also constitutes an object of critical reflection in this thesis.
Abstract:
The objectives of this work are: 1) to agarose-stabilize fragile biofilms for quantitative structure analysis; 2) to understand the influences of LuxS on biofilm formation; 3) to improve teacher quality by preparing Georgia’s middle school science teachers to integrate inquiry-based, hands-on research modules in the classroom. Quantitative digital image analysis demonstrated the effectiveness of the agarose stabilization technique for generating reproducible measurements of three dimensional biofilm structure. The described method will also benefit researchers who transport their flow cell-cultivated biofilms to a core facility for imaging. AI-2-dependent and independent effects of LuxS on biofilm-related phenotypes were revealed, suggesting that LuxS is a versatile enzyme, possessing multiple functions in E. coli ecology that could assist E. coli in adapting to diverse conditions. Overall, the work presented in this dissertation supported the concept that quorum sensing, biofilm formation, and cell adhesion are largely related. Additionally, through this project, teachers enhanced content knowledge and confidence levels, mastered innovative teaching strategies and integrated inquiry-based, inter-disciplinary, hands-on activities in the classroom. As a result, student learning was enhanced, and teachers are better equipped to give Georgia’s students a solid foundation in the sciences.

Abstract:
We present a spectroscopic survey of high-redshift, luminous galaxies over four square degrees on the sky, aiming to build a large and homogeneous sample of Ly alpha emitters (LAEs) at z approximate to 5.7 and 6.5, and Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs) at 5.5 < z < 6.8. The fields that we choose to observe are well studied, such as by the Subaru XMM-Newton Deep Survey and COSMOS. They have deep optical imaging data in a series of broad and narrow bands, allowing for the efficient selection of galaxy candidates. Spectroscopic observations are being carried out using the multi-object spectrograph M2FS on the Magellan Clay telescope. M2FS is efficient enough to identify high-redshift galaxies, owing to its 256 optical fibers deployed over a circular field of view 30' in diameter. We have observed similar to 2.5 square degrees. When the program is completed, we expect to identify more than 400 bright LAEs at z approximate to 5.7 and 6.5, and a substantial number of LBGs at z >= 6. This unique sample will be used to study a variety of galaxy properties and to search for large protoclusters. Furthermore, the statistical properties of these galaxies will be used to probe cosmic reionization. We describe the motivation, program design, target selection, and M2FS observations. We also outline our science goals, and present a sample of the brightest LAEs at z approximate to 5.7 and 6.5. This sample contains 32 LAEs with Ly alpha luminosities higher than 10(43) erg s(-1). A few of them reach >= 3 x 10(43) erg s(-1), comparable to the two most luminous LAEs known at z >= 6, "CR7" and "COLA1." These LAEs provide ideal targets to study extreme galaxies in the distant universe.

Abstract:
The Family Health Program (PSF) has adopted as its motto the promotion and access to health by all individuals, focusing mainly on the social groups that are more deprived of attention. The main objective of this study was to implement a model of Family Health Program for the undergraduation curriculum of the Faculty of Dentistry of Bauru of the University of São Paulo (FOB-USP). This Program, which was called \"PSF-Universidade\", served 52 families of children who had signed up at the Casa do Garoto, Bauru/SP. It was based on the tenets of Dentistry and Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences as well as focusing on giving the proper attention to health as followed by SUS, which, in turn, is based on university life routine. The work plan consisted of a selection of a sample, registration and a listing of needs, planning and carrying out of actions as well as a follow-up at the clinics of the FOB-USP. The data collected were analyzed in a descriptive manner by means of distribution of absolute and relative frequencies, with the results presented in graphs and tables for better visualization. The results showed that the average income of the visited families was R$ 645,39 and per capita R$ 154,71; as regards the odontological profile, the CPOD (index of teeth with cavities, lost or filled) of the students was 1.81 and non-students 2.13; the index of students free of cavities was 31.55%.The phonoaudiological conditions, that is, the investigation of the aspects related to the orofacial motricity, voice, hearing and oral language was within normalcy, with only written language presenting itself as inadequate.180 participants were sent for follow-up at the odontological clinics of the FOB-USP, of whom 122 initiated treatments. The degree of satisfaction of the families was measured 3 months after the visits by means of grades attributed to the program, which obtained 9.41.According to the results obtained, it can be concluded that the program developed has allowed the opening of new doors of access to the population in need of public health services.

At the same time, research progress in swarm robotics has seen swarm intelligence algorithms in use with greater eect on real-world robots in the field. A group of AUVs utilizing swarm intelligence concepts has the potential to address issues more effectively than a single AUV, and such a group can potentially open up new areas of application. Examples include the monitoring and tracking of highly dynamic oceanographic phenomena such as phytoplankton blooms and the use of an AUV swarm as a virtual acoustic receiver for sea-bottom seismic surveying or the monitoring of naturally occurring acoustic radiation from cracking ice. However, the limitations of the undersea environment places unique constraints on the use of existing swarm robotics approaches with AUVs. In particular, algorithms must be distributed and robust in the face of localization error and degraded communications. This work presents an investigation into one particular swarm strategy for a group of AUVs, termed formation control, with consideration to the constraints of the underwater domain. Four formation control algorithms, each developed and tested within the MOOS-IvP framework, are presented. In addition, a 'formation quality' metric is introduced. This metric is used in conjunction with a measure of formation energy expenditure to compare the efficacy of each behaviour during construction of a desired formation, and formation maintenance while it drifts in ocean currents. This metric is also used to compare robustness of each algorithm in the presence of vehicle failure and changing communication rate.
by Nicholas Rahardiyan Rypkema.
S.M.

The strength of lithospheric plates relative to the underlying mantle enables the surface plate motions and plate boundary processes that characterize plate tectonics on Earth. Surprisingly, we have a relatively poor understanding of the physical mechanisms that make the lithosphere strong relative to the asthenosphere, and we lack a reference model for ordinary lithospheric structure that can serve as a baseline for comparing geophysical observations across locations. Chapters 2 and 3 of this thesis investigate the seismic structure of a portion of the Pacific plate where the simple tectonic history of the plate suggests that its structure can be used as a reference model for oceanic lithosphere. We present measurements of shallow azimuthal seismic anisotropy, and of a seismic discontinuity in the upper mantle, that reflect the effects of shear deformation and melting processes involved in the formation of the lithosphere at mid-ocean ridges. Chapter 2 investigates the morphology, mineralogy, and geochemistry of SMS deposits from six vent fields along the Eastern Lau Spreading Center (ELSC), demonstrating that ELSC SMS deposits record differences in hydrothermal fluid temperature, pH, sulfur fugacity and host-rock lithology related to proximity to the nearby Tonga Subduction Zone. Chapters 3 and 4 focus on partitioning of Co, Ni, Ga, Ag, and In between hydrothermal vent fluids and chalcopyrite lining fluid conduits in black smoker chimneys. Chapter 3 develops secondary ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) as a technique to measure Co, Ni, Ga, Ag, and In in chalcopyrite and identifies a correlation between Ga and In in chalcopyrite and hydrothermal fluid pH. Chapter 4 presents new data on these elements in ELSC hydrothermal fluids that, combined with SIMS analyses of chalcopyrite chimney linings and previously published data on vent fluids from the Manus Basin, provide evidence that supports partitioning of Ag a lattice substitution for Cu. Together, concentrations of Ga, In, and Ag in chalcopyrite provide proxies of hydrothermal fluid pH and metal (i.e., Ag and Cu) contents.
by Guy Nathaniel Evans.
Ph. D. in Marine Geology

Abstract:
Thesis (Ph. D.)--Joint Program in Chemical Oceanography (Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences; and the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution), 2009.
Includes bibliographical references.
Systematic differences in trace element compositions (rare earth element (REE), heavy metal, metalloid concentrations) of seafloor vent fluids and related deposits from hydrothermal systems in the Manus back-arc basin (Eastern Manus Basin, EMB and Manus Spreading Center, MSC) are used to investigate processes that affect their formation. Processes responsible for observed differences in fluids and deposits from distinct geologic settings include (a) fluid-rock interaction (with temperature, pressure and crustal composition as variables), (b) magmatic acid volatile input and, (c) local seawater entrainment and mixing with hydrothermal fluids, coupled with sulfide precipitation and metal remobilization. REE distributions in vent fluids in the Manus Basin exhibit a wide range of chondrite-normalized patterns that contrast with the relatively uniform distributions observed in mid-ocean ridge vent fluids. This heterogeneity is attributed to marked differences in fluid pH and fluoride and sulfate concentrations that significantly affect REE solubility. The data indicate that REEs can be used as indicators of the styles of magmatic acid volatile input in back-arc hydrothermal systems. Anhydrite in deposits record the same range of REE patterns, suggesting that REE distributions preserved in anhydrite can be used as indicators of past magmatic acid volatile input. Vent fluid heavy metal and metalloid concentrations also exhibit considerable differences. High metal concentrations in EMB versus MSC vent fluids reflect low pH, largely from input of magmatic acid volatiles (indicated by fluoride concentrations greater than seawater). In EMB, metal concentrations are locally affected by dissolution of previously deposited sulfide owing to low pH conditions affected by magmatic acid volatile input or seawater entrainment and mixing with hydrothermal fluid that leads to sulfide precipitation and secondary acidity generation.
(cont.) Massive sulfide deposits in the Manus Basin exhibit a wide range of mineral compositions and heavy metal enrichments. The formation of Zn-rich (sphalerite/wurtzite) deposits in the MSC and of Cu-Fe and Cu-As-rich (chalcopyrite, tennantite) deposits in the EMB reflects differences in the conditions of sulfide precipitation (temperature, pH) and in metal concentrations. The data suggest that heavy metal and metalloid distributions in massive sulfide deposits can be used as indicators of the conditions of vent deposit formation.
by Paul R. Craddock.
Ph.D.

Abstract:
This quasi-experimental study compared family formation and perceived partner support among pregnant adolescents in a prenatal care program. Participants were assigned to either an intervention group utilizing centering pregnancy (CP) prenatal care and case management, or to a comparison group receiving case management only. Partners were invited to participate in CP group sessions. This study included 173 predominantly minority pregnant adolescents ages 15–18 years who were enrolled in a prenatal program and followed one month postpartum. Family formation included living and relationship arrangements. Perceived partner support included six domains of perceived social provisions. Data were collected through participants’ self-reports using computer-assisted self-interviews. Changes in family formation and perceptions of partner support from baseline to postpartum did not differ between intervention and comparison groups. Male partners who attended at least one CP session were perceived as more supportive at both the beginning and end of the program than partners who did not attend any sessions. After combining groups, pregnant adolescents reported a significant shift in family formation and increased monetary support from partners from baseline to postpartum. Partner support is important for ensuring positive pregnancy outcomes. Additional strategies are needed to engage young fathers who do not readily provide support during pregnancy.
