Full textDisertacijoje nagrinėjamas automatinis ir pusiau automatinis programavimo užduočių vertinimas programavimo mokyme, egzaminuose ir varžybose. Šiuo metu informatikos mokyme Lietuvoje vis dar dominuoja rankinis programavimo užduočių vertinimas. Atskirose švietimo srityse (programavimo varžybos, algoritmavimo kursai) išplito automatinis ir pusiau automatinis programavimo užduočių vertinimas, paremtas juodosios dėžės testavimo principu. Tačiau automatinio vertinimo pagrindu gauti įverčiai kritikuojami kaip neatskleidžiantys visų pateiktos programos privalumų ir trūkumų. Ypatingai dideli vertinimo netikslumai gaunami vertinant nebaigtas programas. Disertacijoje sprendžiama Informacinių technologijų valstybinio brandos egzamino (IT VBE) praktinių programavimo užduočių vertinimo problema – siekiama gauti patikimus įvertinimus dideliam pateiktų programavimo užduočių sprendimų kiekiui per priimtiną laiką. Išanalizuotos automatinės programavimo užduočių vertinimo sistemos bei joms tinkami užduočių tipai atvedė prie idėjos tobulinti vertinimo metodą. Svarbiausias disertacijos rezultatas – pasiūlytas būdas tobulinti pusiau automatinį vertinimo ir testavimo metodą didinant jo interaktyvumą. Tam pusiau automatinė vertinimo sistema turi būti papildoma komponentais, leidžiančiais modifikuoti pateiktą programą, stebėti modifikuotos programos funkcionalumo pokyčius. Pasiūlytas patobulintas vertinimo metodas išbandytas praktiškai, sukurta IT VBE praktinių užduočių vertinimo sistema. Taikant šį... [toliau žr. visą tekstą]

Full textThe thesis investigates the automatic and semi-automatic evaluation of programming assignments in teaching of programming, exams and competitions. Manual evaluation of programming assignments is still dominant in programming teaching in Lithuania. In some contexts (i.e. programming competitions, basics of programming and algorithms course) there is widely applied automatic and semi-automatic evaluation of programming tasks based on black-box testing approach. However, automatic evaluation based on black-box testing is criticized for its inability to demonstrate the strengths and the weaknesses of the program being evaluated. Automatic evaluation is not capable of identifying the level of achievement in incomplete programs. The thesis addresses the problem of evaluation of practical programming assignments in Information Technology maturity exam (IT VBE). This problem involves requirements to evaluate reliably thousands of programming assignment solutions in a reasonable amount of time. The thesis presents analysis of systems for automatic evaluation of programming tasks and appropriate types of assignments. The analysis led to the improvement of the evaluation method. The most important result of the research is the proposed way to improve the semi-automatic evaluation and testing method by increasing its interactivity. A semi-automatic assessment system is expanded by adding the components responsible for the modification of submitted programs, monitoring changes in the... [to full text]

Full textProgramming usually includes the use of a computer and a text editor, yet programming courses given at institutions of higher education often conclude with traditional written exams to assess the students’ acquired practical knowledge. This traditional examination method restricts the complexity of programming problems and may result in unintentional subjective assessments. Previous research on computer-based programming exams that mimic real programming conditions suggest that the assessment of the students’ acquired knowledge can be made more efficient while also simplifying both grading and administration processes. We use Bunge’s general scientific method and case study methodology to develop a system for computer-based programming exams that can be implemented at KTH Kista. Our results suggest that programming exams can be safely performed on the students’ own computers by booting the computer into a restricted preconfigured system environment with blocked Internet access from a usb flash drive. Paired with the open-source learning management system Moodle, the exams can be administered electronically and designed with automatic grading processes. To help exam invigilators we also developed an observation tool that can detect if the restricted system environment is circumvented. Despite the lack of real tests of the system due to the circumstances caused by the ongoing pandemic, we conclude, with the support of previous studies, that our proposed solution for computer-based programming exams can improve the quality and efficiency of programming courses and their examination processes.

In the learning of computer programming, beginners are easily frustrated and give up learning. As a result, it is important for teachers to give assistance to beginners. However, in a typical computer programming course, teachers are difficult to obtain the learning status of an entire class and give individual assistance. However, using e-learning technology can help the teacher to improve his or her teaching effectively. By using a system to record the learning process, teachers can decide whether to provide additional hints to those students who need assistance, and can help improve the teacher’s teaching quality. PLWeb, a programming learning environment for multiple languages provides many functionality to improve teaching quality including supports of asyncrhnous distance learning. In asyncrhnous distance learning mode, teachers cannot provide assistance to students immediately. In addition, PLWeb has yet to provide computer-based exam effectively, and teachers have to check the source code after the exam. The high cost of administering an exam prohibits teachers to conduct frequent exams to improve students’ learning. The aims of this study is to improve PLWeb by adding adaptive learning and computer-based exam capabilities. Adaptive learning can provide stundents with different programming experiences different exercises to assist their learning without assistance from teachers. Computer-based exam supports source code testing and grading automatically. These two functionalities can improve students’ learning and teachers’ teaching quality.

As the programming competence has become one of the most fundamental skills for civil engineers, undergraduate students in many universities and colleges are now required to take a programming language course such as C++ or Java. Researchers have pointed out that the best way to expedite the learning process for students taking the programming language course is to ask them to write codes by themselves. However, plagiarism always exists among students’ source codes and the course instructor does not have an effective means to verify whether a student truly understand the programming concepts or not. Use of the ontology for the programming language concepts may help resolve the above problem. In fact, the interaction between the instructor and the students is a knowledge exchange process. In the Web Ontology Language (OWL) definition, the ontology consists of three components: individuals, properties, and classes. The relationships of these components and the characteristics of properties make the ontology be able to represent complicated concepts. The ontology also includes a reasoning mechanism which can automatically verify the rationality and consistency of the model and do the classification. This study constructs an ontology model to capture the concepts of the C++ programming language. With the ontology model, similar concepts of the programming language could be combined together by the OWL reasoner to generate a new question. This model can assist in creating an online exam platform that can contain a large number of question templates and generate a question dynamically. Preventing plagiarism can also be achieved by generating a unique set of questions for each student, i.e., changing the parameters or other status of a question. The instructor can concentrate more on the learning process of a student, while students’ real learning performances can be evaluated by using this online exam platform.
