Abstract:
Abstract Motivation: Multiple sequence alignments (MSAs) with large numbers of sequences are now commonplace. However, current multiple alignment benchmarks are ill-suited for testing these types of alignments, as test cases either contain a very small number of sequences or are based purely on simulation rather than empirical data. Results: We take advantage of recent developments in protein structure prediction methods to create a benchmark (ContTest) for protein MSAs containing many thousands of sequences in each test case and which is based on empirical biological data. We rank popular MSA methods using this benchmark and verify a recent result showing that chained guide trees increase the accuracy of progressive alignment packages on datasets with thousands of proteins. Availability and implementation: Benchmark data and scripts are available for download at http://www.bioinf.ucd.ie/download/ContTest.tar.gz. Abstract:
10674 Background: Monitoring the response to the chemotherapy treatment (CT) in metastatic breast cancer (MBC) by circulating tumour markers (CTM) remains under investigation. We have previosly shown that early lack of biological progression of 4 CTM (1 oncofetal: CEA, 2 mucin related: CA 15.3,CA 549 and cytokeratin 18–19: TPA), predicts anatomic disease control - concordance nearly 100% for every CTM- during CT of MBC (E.J.C. Suppl Oct 2005, Vol 3 Abst 415- ECCO 13). The aim is to evaluate whether the biological behaviour predicts time till progression (TTP), as reliable parameter of the quality of response (QR). Methods: In 106 consecutive courses of different schedules of CT given along 3 years in our Hospital to 55 patients with progressive MBC, we conducted a prospective trial analysing these 4 CTM every 3 weeks before CT infusions and performing CTM concentration / time curves. TTP was calculated by Kaplan Meier method -SPSS 11-. Bio kinetic change has been defined as a lineal slope that includes 2 early and consecutive changes of at least 25% of CTM start value. The analysis covered 604 cycles, 405 curves and 2417 marker determinations. Results: Ninety six per cent of the cases have progressed after their CT courses. In CTM expressing diseases, and sometimes after a no more than 3 weeks paradoxical period, three biological patterns could be detected according to directional possibilities: progressive elevation (Bio P), progressive download (Bio R) and stabilization -without bio kinetic change- (Bio S). Table shows the TTP median values in the different group of cases with the same CTM Bio response patterns; Biological Patterns and TTP Kaplan Meier curves will be shown as a Poster at the meeting. Conclusions: In CTM expressing tumours and taking into account simple kinetics criteria, the dynamic analysis of CTM before infusions can early estimates TTP, adding complemmentary information to the disease control prediction in the evaluation of the QR during the CT of MBC. Abstract:
Collections of poems from the Islamic mystical tradition are not at all unusual on the American market. Yet most of these collections have been published by presses that specialize in spirituality, so it is quite remarkable to see this collection of poetry translated and edited by Omid Safi being published by Yale University Press. Safi is a Professor of Islamic Studies in the Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies at Duke University in North Carolina, and he is author of numerous books such as Progressive Muslims (2003), The Politics of Knowledge in Premodern Islam (2006) and Memories of Muhammad: Why the Prophet Matters (2009). Yet he is prob-ably better known as a public intellectual through his blogs and columns. To download full review, click on PDF.

Abstract:
The question of Islam’s compatibility with modernity (and other interrelated aspects like democracy, rationality, nationalism, etc.) has been debated for more than two centuries. In the Subcontinent, this debate started with British imperialism (the so-called British Raj, 1857-1947). Scholars like Chirag Ali (d. 1895), Sir Syed Ahmad Khan (d. 1898), Allama Iqbal (d. 1938), Abul Kalam Azad (d. 1958), Shibli Numani (d. 1914), Mumtaz Ali (d. 1974), Syed Mawdudi (d. 1979), Amin Ihsan Islahi (d. 1997), and Abul Hassan Ali Nadwi (d. 1999) offered various critical responses. The debate still manifests in different forms, whether regarding nationalism or secularism, rationality or progressive politics. A plethora of mostly apologetic literature has been produced on the question. A recent addition to this literature is Parray’s Mediating Islam and Modernity. To download full review, click on PDF.

Abstract:
Within the present diploma thesis, established web browser based video solu-tions are examined for their use as internet broadcasting system for local TV stations, with the intention of implementing a broadcasting solution based on the technique matching the requirements of local TV stations best. Basis of this examination is the comparison of the web video solutions Quick-Time, RealVideo, Windows Media, Adobe Flash and Java. These systems are compared by their multimedia support, flexibility of use, quality of the video co-decs they use and their market penetration. On the basis of the requirements of local TV stations, determined together with KabelJournal and Sachsenfernsehen, adobe flash is the most satisfying solution to build a Web TV application upon. Its market penetration, flexibility of use and its support for still images, videos and interactive animations match those requirements best. The implementation of the Web TV application based on adobe flash proofs its great flexibility, ease of use and its diverse variations in combining different me-dia, at the determination of concrete use cases together with KabelJournal and Sachsenfernsehen. It shows that this is an easy but high potential way to enter new markets for local TV stations

Abstract:
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a growing Public Health problem. Recent evidence points that low education and poor socio-economic conditions are associated with higher risk of developing CKD and progressing to dialysis or transplantation need. Hence patient empowerment through health education and qualification with technological tools that allows better treatment adherence may play an important role in the achievement of optimal clinical outcomes. The Renal Health is a multidisciplinary project created at the University of Fortaleza, northeast Brazil, in 2015, aiming to create novel educational material and technological tools for people with CKD, in different treatment modalities, including dialysis and transplant. The products developed so far in the project include an application for smartphones aiming to help patients in dialysis and transplant in their treatments, including schedule for medications, with alarms, water ingestion control, laboratory tests results, and medical appointments’ agenda, besides all information regarding CKD. The other tools include a medication box, an insole for weight control (both are in the prototype phase), connection with smartbands (for vital signs monitoring) and multimedia educational tools, including a profile in the Instagram and a channel in YouTube. Since the first release of the application in the virtual stores, there were more than 1,000 downloads, predominantly in Brazil, although the app is also available in English and Spanish. All these tools represent innovative ways of patient empowerment and may be increasingly present in daily life. Further studies are required to assess the impact of these tools in patients’ outcomes, including CKD progression and mortality.

Abstract:
This chapter outlines three major transformations in how consumers acquire copyrighted content, and the gradual erosion of ownership rights that accompanied them. Historically, copyrighted works were distributed through tangible copies. In the early 2000s, the first transformation took place through the rise of digital downloads. Second, remote cloud storage allowed consumers to access remote copies through high-speed data connections. The third major shift, to subscription streaming services, is now underway. With each step in this progression, consumers have sacrificed permanence and stability for lower prices and convenience. More importantly, copyright law has failed to keep up with the development of these new technologies. Copyright law has focused on the copy/work distinction to delineate the rights of copyright holders and consumers, but the traditional tangible copy is disappearing from the marketplace.

Abstract:
Despite the extraordinary progression in modern medicines, alternative medicine has always been practiced. Alternative medicine or complementary medicine is a term referring to any practice that aims to achieve healing effects using pseudoscience or without biological explanation. The major drawback of alternative medicine is that these medicines are not scientifically tested as claimed by different studies. Nevertheless, according to the World Health Organization, more than 70% of the population of developing countries prefer alternative medicine systems. In this work, a review of ten most popular Android based smartphone applications that belongs to two most popular alternative medicines systems i.e. Homeopathy and Ayurveda are presented. The apps are selected based on the number of reviews, user rating, and the number of downloads provided by Google's play store. From the reviews of users, it was noted that most of the users are satisfied with the selected smartphone app. Based on this fact, it can be implicitly concluded that these medical systems can effectively solve user health-related issues.

Abstract:
Corporate environmental reporting using the Internet – especially the WWW – is a rapidly emerging and increasingly popular method. Today, online environmental reporting has become part of business practices and daily affairs for a number of companies, and thus many of the environmental communication vehicles provided for companies’ target groups and other stakeholders (users) are available on the WWW: reports, brochures, leaflets, newsletters, press releases, slides, presentations, audio sequences, video clips and so forth are accessible via download and/or online, prepared for being pulled or automatically disseminated via e-mail or other current push technologies. Despite the considerable progress companies have made in recent years, however, it is not yet clear just how environmental reporting will advance to the next stage. In particular, the role of the Internet as an emerging computer-based medium and its unique capabilities in form and content need to be understood better. This chapter describes how to develop from early environmental reporting stages towards the more advanced sustainability reporting, while exploiting the Internet’s specific capabilities properly. This path is illustrated as a progression in environmental reporting along three dimensions: integration of financial and social issues into environmental reporting, provision of reporting instruments on various media and fine tuning communication vehicles according to users’ needs and preferences. These trends in terms of a more balanced reporting approach, cross media availability and customization seem to be converging to push the field towards sustainability reporting based on the Internet as a backbone for companies’ underlying ICT infrastructure. Without support from ICT, progress in the field toward sustainability reporting is seen as quite difficult, as moving away from orthodox environmental reporting is a complex task. Hence, a framework on how to use the Internet and its associated technologies is proposed, including four conceptual components: stakeholder analysis, information requirement analysis, XML-based document engineering and ICT architecture of an Internet-based reporting system. When employing such an Internet-based approach, it is argued here, the company will be in a position to carry out its tasks of information management well, using its human and organizational resources more efficiently, and communicating on environmental and sustainability issues in a meaningful way; that is, facilitating stakeholder dialogue, interactivity, feedback possibilities and tailor-made reports that respond precisely to the requirements of certain reporting standards and guidelines, or exactly to the information needs of the target groups.
