Abstract:
The logistic project resulting from technological progress and social and economic transformations is no longer just a one-off event in the company's life. More and more often, it is a process that sanctions the company's development and investment activity. It can also be a continuous process, aiming at the company's adaptation to the changing environment and market requirements. A process-oriented approach to a logistics project requires a new methodology and a new approach to logistics design and planning. This article is a critical analysis of the literature on logistics projects and project management methods. The authors attempt to redefine the logistic project and describe its basic elements, such as logistic tasks, logistics resources, and other, important for supporting and managing a logistic project employing IT technologies.

Abstract:
Containerization in logistics enables the products to be transported quickly within the standard conditions; however, heavy cargoes with non-standard size are still a big problem in shipment processes. This problem examines within the scope of project logistics. Project logistics are defined as the realization of the transportation of non-standard bulky and heavy materials, which cannot be transported by the standard container, in specific time period and without any damage. According to objectives of 2023, Turkey Government has committed to improve logistics infrastructure, regulations and operations in parallel with global business supply chain. Project logistics are high value-added operations in logistic sector, due to one-time logistics operation with its unique tools and methods. Turkey’ geographic advantages could be used to foster project logistics, but they are affected from external environmental factors and facing many problems as other countries. In this study, the challenges facing companies during their project logistics operations will be analyzed. In-depth interviews will be conducted with company’ executives whom are operating on project logistics in Turkey. According to field study, the main problems of project logistics operations are subtitled as physical infrastructure, legal regulations, education and economic problems. Also, in order for the sector to work effectively, main four problems must be eliminated and state-private sector coordination must be ensured.

Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to assist the project manager in minimising the material logistics cost of road project by planning the optimal movement of aggregate across three stages of supply chain: sourcing, processing and distribution. Design/methodology/approach The paper conceptualises the raw material consumption in a road project as a logistics network distribution problem. A linear programming (LP) formulation is constructed with appropriate decision variables by integrating the three stages of material movement. The series of LP scenarios are solved using an LP solver to decide the optimal movement of the aggregate to be consumed in different layers of road segments. Findings The results obtained from the model show that planning material logistics of an entire road project using optimisation provides substantial saving in logistics costs than using common sense. Further, the magnitude of cost saving improves as the complexity of the model increases in term of enormous feasible options. Practical implications The model shown in this paper may serve as a basis for planning the logistics of raw materials consumed in the road projects. The small improvement in material flows by optimising supply chain shows sensible cost benefit to the project manager and hence control and monitor the overall cost and activities of the project. The output of the model is also expected to help the project team as an input in the decision-making processes such as appropriate material sourcing contract, capacity assessment of material processing facility and transportation planning. Originality/value While the optimisation models are widely used and popular among the many industrial applications, this research shows distinct application of such a model in managing the logistics of the road construction project.

Abstract:
The management of logistics projects is a well known part of management science. But until now, purely quantitative and hard project management techniques like the critical path method and the project evaluation and review technique have been dominant. With this main stream approach, only simply structured logistics projects can normally be managed. The few attempts to use case-based reasoning (CBR) for project management failed up until now because of the difficulties when identifying those projects which contain useful, especially qualitative knowledge for the current logistics project. In this paper we present an ontology-driven case-based reasoning system (SCM Project Recommender), that can measure similarity between knowledge collections, which are written in natural language. The application is implemented using the open source CBR development framework jCOLIBRI.

Abstract:
With the rapid development of a new generation of information technology and data systems, there are more and more modern logistics park projects appearing in China. However, in the process of the construction and operation of a logistics park project, there is often a lack of coordination between the multiple parties (usually the government, the development enterprise and the entered enterprises), which leads to a series of problems such as low efficiency and disordered management and so on, finally affecting the project performance. However, few studies have focused on this phenomenon, and prior studies are unclear regarding the impact of multi-agent collaboration on logistics park project performance. Therefore, in this study, we investigate the link between multi-agent collaboration and the logistics park project performance based on survey data from Yunnan Province in China. The empirical analysis was conducted using the partial least squares (PLS)-based structural equation modeling with Smart PLS 2.0. The data analysis results suggest that the three dimensions of multi-agent collaboration (management, mechanism and information collaboration) have a significant positive impact on the performance of a logistics park project. Under different environmental dynamics conditions, different strategies should be adopted by a logistics park project to improve the performance. This study provides a new perspective for understanding the value of multi-agent collaboration in logistics park projects both in theory and practice.

Abstract:
The objective of this study is to investigate how lean six sigma can be used in a process improvement project, and how to apply lean six sigma in a real-life situation. The task is to decrease the amount of late deliveries to a factory from a nearby logistics facility, where production materials are stored in. The study will be performed as a case study. The case study begins with a literature review, where scientific publications of the subject are studied. After this, a real-life process improvement project will be carried out in a company. During the project, the learnings from the literature and the tools and methods of lean six sigma will be applied. There will also be examples given on the application of lean six sigma. As a result of this study, suggestions for improvement were made. Implementing these suggestions would help to reduce the amount of late deliveries. Due to the limited time of the project, these suggestions could not be completely carried out to be used practically during the case study. Therefore, it was not possible to report the actual benefits of these improvements. However, a pessimistic annual assessment of the potential benefit was 485,000 euros. The results of this study can be used very well because the tools used in the project can be applied to any field of business. The potential benefit for the process under investigation is not entirely generalizable. However, many companies face the same kind of problems in their processes, for which, this study can be of help to

Abstract:

Abstract:
This study concerns logistics at the construction projects. Most construction projects suffer from unnecessary activities on site which indicates the need for improving construction logistics. Hence the purpose of this paper was to investigate, through site observations and interviews, the current logistics situation on the construction site and to suggest possible solution for improving construction logistics. The main focus of this study was on material deliveries and time that craftsmen spend on handling materials. The thesis concludes that skilled craftsmen are transporting the third part of all incoming interior materials by their selves. Due to poor logistics planning workers are also doing lots of rework and extra work. The study showed that, by implementing other logistics solutions, it is possible to reduce the production costs by 65 SEK/m2 of living area and also to shorten the production time by 3.3%.    The study actualizes the importance of construction logistics which is often underestimated. The study also showed what consequences ineffective logistics solution could have on the construction project. While, on the opposite, proper logistics planning gives benefits to the project.

Abstract:
This research provides insights into project deliveries in the Barents Region. The aim of this research is to describe the project delivery process and to examine the barriers and the opportunities of transport logistics that are involved in project logistics in the Barents Region. The research is conducted with qualitative research methods and it features two case examples of project deliveries. The literature review provides academic findings from transport logistics and project logistics sources. Theoretical framework is constructed of the project delivery process that encompasses a focus on barriers and opportunities of transport logistics. The data collection includes 8 interviews and observation. The project delivery process consists of several phases: manufacturing, project cargo, transport mode choice, loading/stowing, transportation and final destination. This research provides also essential information of barriers and opportunities that are involved in project deliveries in the Barents Region. The project delivery process includes barriers that are: infrastructure, border crossing issues, distance, regulation and challenges with all-year traffic. According to the research findings, the best opportunities for project deliveries are road- and maritime transport. This research reveals that there are also difficulties in cross-border logistics between the Nordic countries, unlike the earlier academic findings suggest. Clearly, this research provides both theoretical contribution and managerial implications. Earlier research of project deliveries is almost completely lacking, which means that new academic research is needed. Thus this research presents valuable and new theoretical contribution by describing and picturing the project delivery process in detailed fashion. The managerial implications are related to the findings of potential barriers and the best transport mode opportunities in project deliveries in the Barents Region. By clarifying the potential challenges of project deliveries, this research gives valuable information of what kinds of problems there might be, and most importantly this research gives instructions that are valuable for tackling those challenges. All in all, this research provides valuable findings of project logistics and cross-border logistics in the Barents Region.

Abstract The Integrated Logistics Solutions Provider concept was introduced to support offshore drilling and production operations, save 20% on logistic costs, increase operational efficiency to achieve Just-in-Time deliveries and enable the upstream portfolio to focus on core competencies, thus seeking an One-stop contractor for logistics. This manuscript details how the logistics provider changed its operating model to an Integrated Logistics model, changed the status quo to become a competitive low-cost operating logistics provider and enabled operational and cost efficiency for Exploration and Production (E&P) customers. It also reflects on the technologies and commercial mechanisms used to drive the functioning of the operating model that meets the requirements of oil and gas operators.

Abstract:
Peculiarities of business logistics are related to sustainable transferring processes, which has always been a mundane task of trade processes. The lack of obstruction of the constant flow of this operation causes disruption to the whole economy and can lead not only to the loss of the foremost profits but also negatively influence the sustainable business logistics development. In pursuance of a strong logistical basis, any business entity should have a variety of practices for managing projects of this kind. Unfortunately, recent scientific explorations overlooked the importance of sustainable project management factors, especially during the Covid-19 situation, and rarely focused on how the implementation of these projects changed in the business logistics over the past few years. Based on a scientific litera-ture review, a set of factors influencing sustainable business logistics projects management both externally and inter-nally was identified. Study results showed that external factors influencing sustainability were related to environmental expenditure, local procurement, and the presence of the market as well as the internal connecting reduced resource exploitation, strategy and project life cycle towards rendering effective business logistics projects for the companies operating mainly on third-party logistics (3PL) and ground transport basis.

Abstract:
As all aspects of the American workplace become automated or digitally enhanced to some degree, K12 educators have an increasing responsibility to help their students acquire the technical skills necessary to organize and interpret information. Increasingly, this is done through Geographic Information Systems (GIS), especially in careers related to transportation and logistics. The Center for International Trade & Transportation (CITT) at CSU Long Beach has developed this K12 Special Investigation Project to introduce ArcGIS StoryMaps, an engaging, accessible and sophisticated web-based GIS application. The lessons center on e-commerce and its accompanying environmental and economic impact. Still, the activities can be easily adapted to projects in any subject area, such as humanities, science, math, or language arts. This teacher blueprint includes a teacher training guide with ten detailed lesson plans and activities. With the guidance of a National Board-Certified Teacher in Early Adolescence Math as lead instructor, the curriculum is designed to align with Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). Also, exploration of STEM and GIS-related careers are incorporated into the lesson plans.

Abstract:
Political economy analysis (PEA) has emerged as a valuable approach for assessing context and the local systems where international development actors seek to intervene. PEA approaches and tools have grown and adapted over the last 40 years through innovations by donor agencies and practitioners. Our analysis of nine PEAs reveals the following findings: PEAs can make positive contributions to technical interventions; engaging project staff in PEAs increases the likelihood that they will be open to a thinking and working politically mindset and approach; inclusion of gender equity and social inclusion (GESI) in PEAs helps to uncover and address hidden power dynamics; and explicitly connecting PEA findings to project implementation facilitates adaptive management. Implementation lessons learned include careful consideration of logistics, timing, and team members. Our experience and research suggest applied PEAs provide valuable evidence for strengthening evidence-based, adaptive, international development programming. The findings highlight the promise of PEA as well as the need for ongoing learning and research to address continued challenges.

Sriraj, P. S., Bo Zou, Lise Dirks, Nahid Parvez Farazi, Elliott Lewis, and Jean Paul Manzanarez. Maritime Freight Data Collection Systems and Database to Support Performance Measures and Market Analyses. Illinois Center for Transportation, December 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.36501/0197-9191/20-021.

Abstract:
The Illinois Marine Transportation System (IMTS) is a key component of the nation’s inland waterway system. IMTS is comprised of 27 locks and dams, 19 port districts, more than 350 active terminals, and 1,118 miles of navigable inland waterways traversing along the borderline or within the state of Illinois. However, the infrastructure of IMTS is aging and its conditions are deteriorating. To monitor the performance of IMTS and guide infrastructure investment to enhance safety, efficiency, and reliability of the system, a comprehensive performance measurement program is needed. To this end, the objective of this project is to create an integrated, comprehensive, and maintainable database that facilitates performance measurement of maritime freight to, from, and through Illinois. To achieve this objective, a review of the literature on maritime freight transportation both in the United States and abroad was performed. To gauge practitioners’ points of view, a series of phone interviews and online surveys of Illinois’ neighboring state DOT officials, officials from the US Army Corps of Engineers, Illinois port district authorities, and carriers operating in Illinois was also conducted. With the findings from the literature review and an understanding of state DOT practices, the needed and available data sources for a maritime freight performance measurement program were identified. Building on all the above efforts, a first-of-its-kind PM database for IMTS was designed and developed, along with a detailed user manual, ready for IDOT’s immediate use and future updates. In addition, opportunities for IDOT to use the database to conduct analysis are discussed. Key programmatic recommendations that outline the role of IDOT as a champion and as a facilitator are further included. The outcome of this project will help IDOT gain much-needed knowledge of and develop programs to improve IMTS performance, increase multimodal transportation network capacity, and expand the transportation and logistics sector of the state, which ultimately benefit the people and economy of Illinois.
