This thesis aims to report the results of a study to check the use of project management practices, based on the PMBOK (Project Management Body of Knowledge) Guide, in the day-to-day by project professionals in Brazilian organizations. The effective and efficient implementation of a project requires a composition of knowledge, skills, techniques and tools that are used and defined in many project management guides. This composition is what we call as project management. This study about the degree of use of the practices consisted in a quantitative field survey with the individuals working with project management in their companies. Thus we identified the characteristics of professional, of your organization, the use of practices, and metrics of success of the project. It is emphasized that this research study is limited to Brazilian audience. To achieve the study goals, is was developed as: descriptive analysis, where we seek to describe the reality of project management presented by professionals; explanatory, aiming at clarifying the degree of utilization of these practices in relation to the PMBOK Guide in organizations; and exploratory, as there was little knowledge accumulated and systematized in this area in Brazil . We also use the literature review to consolidate the study of theories relating to the area of project management based on guides , periodicals and journals , academic papers and books on the subject matter. Through the quantitative analysis we sought the compliance of the data collected to allow the logical analysis of information in the process of searching for answers about the evaluation of the PMBOK Guide’s project management principles use degree by project professional in the Brazilian market. The results showed different use degrees of practices according to the nine knowledge areas of the PMBOK Guide and intriguing revelations when analyzed under perspectives like an existence of a PMO (project management office) in the company, project success and among others revealing that the context where the professionals and their organizations can contribute for a significant changing in the use degrees analyzed. This study aims to serve as factor for prospecting of others studies in the area of project management, promoting Brazilian scientific publications.

Abstract:
When housing demand began a constant process of growth, thanks to need to get a home, the opportunity was seen to be able to implement a project by raising productivity through project management using the PMI global standards to build a 15-story building called La Costanera Multifamily Building located in Lima city. In this research work, the Business Case was developed, which reviews the implication of the construction sector and determines its impact on the project. The main project objective was to implement a methodology under the PMI standards, which adapts to the project and generates an optimal result, related to profitability and management indicators. Additionally, the proposal to carry out project control through the Last Planner methodology that allows us to optimize the project execution times with the Look Ahead tool is included. The project obtained a turnover of S / 5,329,651.24 and a cost of S / 4,966,689.00, with an advance of 15% and a lead-time of 10 months, as a result of this construction service and the cash flow of payments, it has been estimated to obtain a VAN of S / 376,479.07. The business case development has allowed us to perform for the technical and economic feasibility analysis of the project, taking into account that all project strategies and the organization strategic objectives must be aligned. Likewise, stakeholders should be considered as an important part of the project, transforming their expectations as specific project requirements. Finally, this research work shows the global PMI standards allow increasing the success probability of this projects type in the construction sector. Accordingly, our research work recommends for the JJGH Company a PMO implementation.

Abstract:
Most international corporations have to adopt to the requirements of globalisation by working in international joint ventures or international projects outside their well known home markets. The successful management of projects is an essential element aiming to cope with the complex challenges caused by cultural factors and other influences on the management of projects. Especially the Middle East as a cultural region has experienced a dynamic growth during the last decades, as many of the countries rich in oil and gas have heavily invested into their local infrastructure. Besides other factors, the impact of national culture on project management may lead to negative influences like project delays and project failure, or positive influences such as an increased communication. Based on the Hofstede dimensional framework this thesis is designed to investigate which cultural factors and other factors influence the PMBoK (PMI Body of Knowledge) knowledge areas while delivering projects in the Middle East. This empirical study is using a qualitative research approach in a multiple-case study design analysing six projects. The results clearly show that some characteristics of the Middle Eastern cultural context strongly determine the applicability of the PMBoK knowledge areas. Especially the interrelation of individualism (IDV) and power distance (PDI) reveals some new perspectives for project work in this region. The two case studies illustrate a strong increase in power distance if the project manager and the team member do not originate from the same cultural background. Additionally differences in time perception and the characteristics of the dimension long term orientation (LTO) result in fundamental differences for the application of the PMBoK processes. The findings help to develop a theoretical framework highlighting specific influences for PMBoK knowledge areas. The results of this thesis may form a basis for future researchers aiming to develop improved models for project management in the Middle East or other cultural regions. Finally, the theoretical franework developed herein is designed to help project practitioners to gain a better understanding of the specific challenges while working on the Arabian peninsula.

Abstract:
Introduction: During the process of implementation of Education Distance Learning (EDL), the planning stage and management of the course is one of the themes that has been occupying the discussions of those involved in designing and implementing educational proposals, often for purposes that exceed the educational level and also run into administrative and economic nature issues. The fact that, in distance education, you\'re dealing with subjects and different characteristics of institutions as well as the most sophisticated technologies, has not ensured equal advance in pedagogical teaching models, and even less in quality management. Objective: To develop an educational project in the distance through the existing management tools in the Project Management Body of Knowledge Guide (PMBOK). Method: The study consisted of an applied research, production technology with exploratory and descriptive analysis. As for technique, we used the case study of document analysis. Results: In this project we considered the existence of 5 phases of the life cycle that base the model of the process of project management, covering all path from conception to closure, identified by Initialization, Planning, Execution, Monitoring and Control, Finalization. In accordance with the guidelines of the PMBOK Guide, the 10 areas of knowledge were selected by the project team, since they encompass all managerial actions of a distance course, however, according to the project profile, only part of these processes were used. Integration has played an essential role in the management of the course, as it has created favorable conditions for the development of the project through the establishment of the objective of training professionals in the use of Digital Information and Communication Technologies as pedagogical resources through distance education based in meaningful learning, in the use of dialectical methodology and active methodologies, linked to the mediation of learning in the digital epoch. Conclusions: Each PMBOK Guide Knowledge area had in its processes the organization according to the demands and knowledge of the design and management, with an emphasis on educational planning. The conceptual and operational details was analyzed in order to guide the essentials for planning a project in distance education in a managerial context guided by the model of good practice in project management. Planning for learning units, monitoring, control and quality criteria were essential for decision-making in management. The establishment of the predominant activities of the educational project and its main purpose made that the products were developed within what was desired by the stakeholders, being well liked without any restriction.

Abstract:
Information Technology (IT) projects continue to fail despite being managed by certified Project Management Professionals (PMP) and professionally trained non-certified Project Managers (PM). This study addressed PMPs and qualified PMs who continue to experience IT project failure at a high rate. The purpose of this qualitative multiple case study was to explore perspectives of PMs and their understanding of project management best practices in the Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK). There were 5 research questions focused on IT project failures, lessons learned, trends, deficiencies in project management framework, and adherence to standard PM practices. This study utilized a phenomenological approach and an inductive analysis based on Koskinen's theory that a lack of project management knowledge can contribute to project failure. Data were collected from open-ended interviews with 20 project managers; these data were then inductively coded and analyzed for themes and patterns. Findings yielded categories of poor scope management, cost overruns, unmanaged resources, un-realistic requirements, inadequate stakeholder management, and deficiencies in content in the PMBOK standards. The results could influence positive social change for PMs to assess the depth of project management training needed to understand early warning signs of IT project failure. These changes could promote awareness within the project management community and encourage more in-depth PM competency training.

Abstract:
Project management in a systematic manner has become essential for any type of organization, because the markets every day become increasingly competitive, scarce resources and more demanding customers. You can see this with the growing number of companies that are associated with the Project Management Institute (PMI) - reference the best practices in project management - which since late 2013 has more than 400,000 affiliates around the world. This tendency is natural, since companies need to stand out in business in an increasingly dynamic market in order to ensure their survival. According to Gu et al. (2013), a key issue in project management research centers on why some projects are successful while others do not. This question led the researchers to explore potential determinants that can lead to success or failure of a project. For example, the Standish Group International (2009) found an overall rate of failure of the project around 72% in the US. Admittedly, the organizational culture has a strong influence on the success of the projects, but it would be possible to diagnose it for it better lead project teams? Thus, the aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between organizational culture and project management, using for both models like the Competing Values Framework (CVF) and the Organizational Culture Assessment Instrument (OCAI). The use of models is justified because they are the most used in the literature on organizational management, although we did not find empirical studies that use them in the Brazilian context in project management. The method used to obtain the dominant cultural profile for success in project management was the survey, in which the OCAI model was adapted and designed for managers and project team members. It was observed by analyzing the data, the clan culture showed the strong influence for success in project management according to the perception of the survey respondents. Importantly, there is a better culture profile than the other, so the obtained project management culture is only the diagnosis of an organizational culture that may allow obtaining superior performance, ie success in scope of service, quality, cost and schedule. It is argued for further study the importance of employing respondents from different states of Brazil and even from other countries, seeking to establish that there are no influences from other regional cultural factors in the perception of respondents.

This thesis aims to evaluate the attractiveness to the small Brazilian investor, from a financial point of view, of a new form of investment, based on characteristics of the Brazilian crowdfunding model and of traditional investment tools, to be called crowdinvesting. Supported by the detailed understanding of the existing crowdfunding model in the country and the identification and mapping of the characteristics of traditional investment instruments, this study seeks to define how the new form of investment would work and examine whether, in comparison with traditional tools, in terms of risk and return, the crowdinvesting model would be competitive in the Brazilian market.

This thesis deals with issues surrounding the management of IS/ICT projects, primarily from the point of view of ČSN ISO/IEC norms. I will list and analyse those norms used to define important indicators and processes, which are subsequently mapped to PMBOK process groups. Every norm is accompanied by a brief evaluation describing its suitability for use in IS/ICT projects, its anticipated benefits and the approach taken in its application. The next part of the thesis consists of an analysis of norms from the point of view of methods of estimation in the planning of IS/ICT projects. An analysis is made of the majority of norms that directly or tangentially affect estimation in the planning of IS/ICT projects. The practical section of the thesis contains a metric for the monitoring of projects from the point of view of ISO/IEC norms and the dissemination of the "MMaHPISICTv5.7" model, as created by Ondřej Kmoníček in the thesis "Sledování a vyhodnocování IT projektů - Monitoring and Evaluation of IT Projects" [38]. The model is supplemented by ISO/IEC metrics and also other functionalities, focussing primarily on the depiction of individual metrics over a period of time.

Abstract:
Research submitted to the faculty of engineering and built environment, university of Witwatersrand, in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of master of science in building ( Project Management in construction)
The construction industry is one of the key drivers of economic development in any country. Yet the prevalence of construction project delays and cost overruns continues to be a worldwide chronic problem within the industry. The aim of this study is to evaluate the extent of application of A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide) by construction project managers (CPMs) within South Africa’s built environment. The increase acceptance of project management as a profession indicates that the application of knowledge, processes, skills, tools, and techniques can have a significant impact on project success. Hence, it is imperative to ascertain whether or not CPMs in South Africa built environment are structurally applying PMBOK® Guide’ processes, tools and techniques when managing their construction projects. This study uses the term “structurally applying PMBOK® Guide” to mean appropriate application of the PMBOK® Guide’s knowledge, processes, tools and techniques. The sample population consists of 120 CPMs within South Africa’s built environment drawn from the nine provinces of South Africa. The result of this study confirm conclusions of previous studies that the prevalence of construction project delays and cost overrun is still high in South Africa’s built environment. The results also show that some CPMs do apply the PMBOK® Guide partially, but that, in general, CPMs do not apply the PMBOK® Guide structurally. The findings indicate that this limited structural application of the PMBOK® Guide is one of the major reasons for the prevalence of project delays and cost overruns within South Africa’s built environment. Therefore, this study stresses that stakeholders within South Africa’s built environment and in particular the South African Council for the Project and Construction Manager Professions (SACPCMP) should take measures to address these prevailing challenges attributable to inadequate PMBOK® Guide application as demonstrated in this study. Amongst the measures to address these challenges, this study recommends: firstly, the introduction of the PMBOK® as a compulsory component of a Construction Project Management course. Secondly, that the SACPCMP considers the Project Management Institute’s Project Management Professional exam as one of the Pr. CPM registration requirements as a demonstration of improved theoretical knowledge. Finally, that the built environment fraternity should review the structure of the Built Environment Bill of Quantity so that it is strictly aligned with the Work Breakdown Structure approach. This will assist CPMs to appropriately estimate and control the schedule and cost of each piece of work to avoid project delays and cost overruns. Key words: A Guide to the Project Management Body of Knowledge (PMBOK® Guide), generally recognised, structurally, Built Environment, Construction Project Managers (CPMs).

The existence of standards and guides of good pratices is vast and these are required to help the organizations to obtain good results in the projects, which means, a result is reached if in the end of the project all the requirements are fulfilled and the client is satisfied. The use of these standards and guides, for project management, increases the manager’s knowledge and helps the organization to achive better results. The stantards are associated with different areas of knowledge or competences, each with their own processes to develop. This dissertation, characterizes several standards related to project management in the area of Information Technologies, describes their associated areas for each standard and briefly discusses the changes that occurred in the last editions of the standards. In the way to help th organization to choose the best standard that best suits the project, it’s made a complementary and overlap study between standards. However, the objective of this dissertions it is the development of a framework that shows the future evolution in the project management based on past evolution. Through the progress of this dissertion, it was possible to develop a table that shows the 12 study standards and it was made an interlacement between the areas that compose them in order to show how they complement each other. In addition, it was developed a comparative/prospective model incorporating several changes between standards editions and various associated points to the future evolution in project management.

Abstract:
In a complex macro-economic context, the national building construction companies face challenges related to its performance model in the market, as we live in a society more and more competitive in economic terms. At the same time, consumers became more demanding, more aware and participatory, obliging the construction companies that want to keep not only ative but mainly competitive to otimize the management strategies and the internal management procedures. This is, it became necessary to manage the projects in a professional way to avoid slips, delays and breaks in the quality that have severe consequences both in financial terms and in terms of market. It is in this complex context of action, where the routines are little frequent and where the innovation and the need of adaptation are constant, that arises the need to oppose to the difficult implementation of the teachings of the project management. Fitting this study in this context, its purpose is to analyse if the methodologies of the projects management are used to solve the main problems of the setor. This Master’s thesis intends to identify and analyse the most common practices in the works control made by the building construction companies in order to determine which of the management areas are more valued, the difficulties felt and the main causes for the success/failure of a work. Although all the management areas approached in this study are of extreme importance, the results obtained could be a starting point for future researches related with the valorization that the building companies give to certain areas to the detriment of the remainders. Fields like the costs management or the management of acquisitions/entreaties are more valued by the building companies. Others, like the risk management are not taken in account. The analysis of results showed that the change from the initial project, the failure to comply with deadlines and the budget overruns are the main causes for a work flop. Thus, it shows the enormous importance of the quality of the technical project for the accomplishment of a work.
