Abstract:

The collegiate level student-athletes are subjected to a world that is different than other adolescents beginning their university experience. These individuals embark on their college campuses with more than freshman level English and dorm selection as their greatest sources of stress. On the contrary this level of athletics and education is the genesis for many into the world of professional athletics. These young individuals are ushered into a world where balancing the many perils, pitfalls and pleasantries of a college campus are events that could be construed as the makings of a fulltime job...their sport of choice. The irony of this world is that only a tiny percentage of the student-athletes will make an actual career out of their particular sport, however the training and preparation is the same for all. To top it off, each and every one of the student athletes believes they will be the one to achieve professional status with their talent. American college communities more often than not promote the fact that they are places for adolescents to grow and explore themselves in various ways. Erik Erikson (1982) has determined that the Identity vs. Identity Confusion crisis takes place at this very time and if not successfully resolved one will develop in a psychosocial manner that can impact negatively throughout the rest of one's life. The impasse that the student athlete is faced with is that so much is determined by their performance in their sport rather than their performance as an individual away from their sport. I will focus on the identity development of male and female adolescent collegiate student-athletes and how these two very important components, gender identity and social group identity, interplay in the development of some adolescents and create its own type of identity development completely, Student-Athlete Identity Development (S.A.I.D.) It will be argued that student-athletes, particularly males, have embarked upon this time of exploration in their lives and begin with a foreclosed sense of identity and within months they start to alter their view of self as well as their place within the athletic world.

Abstract:

In the majority of university cities in Sweden, a strong demand for student accommodations has initiated various development and research projects focusing on costs reduction and fast execution. The present thesis brings up a solution based on the development of a feasible assembly concept and process, for a Modular Building erection, where prefabricated 3D Modules are assembled into a sway steel frame. The concept has been initiated within FRAMEUP project: Optimization of Frames for Effective Assembling (RFCS contract RFS-PR-10121). One of the main project objectives was to investigate and develop a competitive structural system suitable for fast in-situ execution and dismounting. Thus, in order to streamline the construction process, the use of optimized prefabricated frames and room 3D modules has become a very attractive alternative. The building is designed considering a six-story building, as it has been seen as the suitable choice of industrial partners in the project on market demands for the optimal payoff time. The use of Intensive Use of Steel together with Modular Construction enhances the conditions for industrialization of the construction process towards the cost reduction.The development of the whole concept is described and followed up by a 4D construction sequence. The concept is based on the original structural system for which calculations, drawings and feasibility test at full scale are made to prove the credibility of the system. The 3D Modules are designed by Norrbotten based SME, which has influenced the global concept design. In addition, development of a novel joint, by means of laboratory tests and finite element models, is shown in the thesis. It is believed that its use in the frame, for the column splice connection, may be advantageous for the execution process. The issue of execution tolerances has been addressed by advanced FEA, which has been validated by experiments.
I majoriteten av svenska universitetsstäder har stark efterfrågan på studentbostäder initierat flera utvecklings- och forskningsprojekt med fokus på kostnadsbesparingar och snabbt uppförande. Föreliggande uppsats behandlar en lösning baserad på utveckling av ett koncept med prefabricerade byggnadsmoduler vilka monteras i ett ramverk av stål. Konceptet har initierats inom FRAMEUP-projektet Optimization of Frames for Effective Assembling (RFCS contract RFS-PR-10121). En av de främsta målsättningarna var att utveckla ett konkurrenskraftigt konstruktivt system som är lämpligt för såväl snabb montering som snabb nedmontering på plats. I syfte att effektivisera konstruktionsfasen är användning av optimerade prefabricerade ramar och rumsmoduler att attraktivt alternativ. Byggnaden är dimensionerad för sex våningar eftersom det har ansetts som ett optimum ur ett återbetalningsperspektiv av medverkande industriella partners. Användningen av koncepten Intensive Use of Steel och Modular Construction förbättrar möjligheterna till industrialisering av konstruktionsprocessen vilket möjliggör kostnadsbesparingar.Utvecklingen av hela konceptet är beskriven och följs upp med en 4D konstruktionssekvens. Konceptet är baserat på det ursprungliga konstruktiva systemet för vilket beräkningar, ritningar och genomförbarhetsprov i fullskala är utförda. Modulerna är konstruerade av SME i Norrbotten vilket har påverkat det övergripande konstruktionskonceptet. Därutöver redovisar uppsatsen utvecklingen av en ny typ av förband vilket undersöks med provning och FE-beräkningar. Det är tänkbart att användande av detta förband i ramverkets pelarskarvar kan leda till ett optimerat uppförande. Frågan om utförandetoleranser har adresserats med avancerade FE-beräkningar vilka har validerats med provningar.

Abstract:

This project addresses how to create an online syllabus that is accessible to students and parents, that empowers students to take responsibility for their own learning while enhancing school/home communication, and serves as a graphic representation of what students have accomplished. Web quests are used as the principle means of instructional delivery to engage middle school students in problem-based projects that address real life situations using rigorous and relevant curricula. Elements of an online syllabus and the content of the course it supports are examined. The role, an online syllabus plays in fulfilling the goals of techno-constructivism, the move from a top down, broadcast model toa decentralized, constructivism model of instructional delivery is addressed.

This project consisted of four parent workshops designed to examine and strengthen home-school communication for Banks Elementary School students, teachers, and parents. The goals of the workshops were to improve parent-teacher relations, increase parent usage of school resources, and increase parent student interaction in the home. Abstract:

This paper evaluates how semi-randomly formed project groups, compared to forming groups at free will, affect students’ learning in a project-oriented setting. The findings are based on empirical data. We have analyzed students’ experiences by taking a course in the subject of Information Systems. The identified experiences are considered to be either a strength or a problem. We can conclude that how we form project groups has an effect on learning. We can also conclude that several of the experiences from semi-randomly formed project groups are of both a positive and negative nature. In the concluding chapter, we give some explanations in order to understand the differences in students’ experiences.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to see if student teachers could bridge the gap between what is taught in higher education courses and what they observe practiced in primary school classrooms by implementing developmentally appropriate practices through the use of the Project Approach promoted by Lilian Katz and Sylvia Chard. Issues and attitudes that developed were also reviewed.Two student teachers provided the data for this qualitative study. The case studies consisted of interviews, observations, and documentation examination. Positive attitudes toward research and theory emerged. Issues that were identified included time, writing lesson plans, lack of a model, and the student teaching triad. Despite the issues it was determined that providing a framework to implement theory assists student teachers when they attempt to implement theory. In this particular study, providing the framework of the Project Approach aided the student teachers in implementing developmentally appropriate practices.

Abstract:

This report describes from start to finish how a new design and extension of the Gengras student union center at the University of Hartford was done. The report will be using a project that was made by me and explains how the whole project was planned by contacting S/L/A/M Collaborative Inc. all the way until the final outcome was presented for a final jury. It explains the whole chain process one should use when designing a building such as different analysis, precedent studies, concept development and how to approach the design project. New technologies, the feature of access and flexibility are the main influence words in the design that is being used as an example. These words can be found and felt throughout the whole building both in the façade drawings and in the plan solutions. The result was a building that is more organic and flexible in its forms and spaces than current architecture is today. A sort of architecture that comes more and more in which will shape the society in the future. My building also keeps a sense of the old façade to create a transition between the new and the old. The old and the new cooperation prove that the innovative design does not destroy the old building; it only enhances it and prepares it for the future.

Abstract:

The research presented in this thesis investigates student team working, by designing, implementing and evaluating a prototype software system, as an aid for co-located students carrying out their team project work. In higher education team projects are a good way for students to put theory into practice and gain experience of team working, by working collaboratively. But difficulties often arise during the projects, which prevent students from benefiting fully from the experience. Some difficulties are known to arise in organisational teams, and others are unique to student teams, but the getting started stage is crucial for developing team cohesion. Technology tools are used to support the task oriented roles of team working, but there is little support for students to get started on their team projects, and to develop a shared understanding. This prototype system provides a function for allocating tasks of the project to appropriate team members and a function to help the team to agree ground rules for team working. A case study approach was adopted for this research, and the prototype system was developed over three cycles, amending the system according to student feedback. At the end of the study, data obtained from the students was analysed to find out how useful the online support system was for helping the student teams to get started on their projects. The students in this case did benefit from the functions this system provided, in particular the team leaders used the output to help plan their projects, and output from the system contributed to team cohesion through developing a shared understanding between the team members. These students recognised the potential of the system for helping students working on team projects online, and gave suggestions for modifications to the system that could be incorporated in further development of the system.

There are many programs throughout the world and in the state of Virginia that have been developed to change the outlook of youth on a broader spectrum. Youth in at risk communities face a different set of parameters and are often mislabeled as "bad kids". Many of these youth simply need an environment filled with positive energy. This redesign will create an environment that guides through intuition and the understanding of angles and markers that are considered universal in all languages. The space will open up a world that is non-institutional and without the normal boundaries and pressures of typical grading system. The education center will cultivate healthy habits for learning that can carry them on to community colleges, universities and the eventually the workforce.

Abstract:

Project-based learning is a multifaceted approach to teaching in which students explore real-world problems and challenges while working in small collaborative groups. Project-based learning is active and engaging and drives students to obtain a deeper knowledge of the subjects they're studying, and students develop confidence and self-direction as they move through both team-based and independent work. This project endeavored to assess the effect of participation in a project-based learning (PBL) activity of the Wind and Oar Boat School's curriculum on the self-efficacy of at-risk high school students. Twenty students participated in the program for both math and applied arts credits needed to complete their high school graduation requirements. Data were collected using a retrospective pre-then-post survey, participant observations, and semi-structured interviews. To assess student Self-efficacy, the researcher observed six constructs of self-efficacy, those being motivation, problem- solving, resilience, teamwork, confidence, and course skills. The findings were utilized to create student narratives that documented the experiences of the students in the program and provide the student side of the program and the changes that happened because of their participation in the program. Analysis of the retrospective survey confirmed that the students had statistically significant increases in all the constructs of self-efficacy, which was congruent with literature citations, researcher observations, and student interviews.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study is to explore the relationship between pedagogy and teacher-student relationships. Researchers have hypothesized that these relationships can promote better student achievement, particularly among low-income students, and that instruction primarily shapes these relationships. Yet not enough is known about these relationships or their connection to student performance to move forward with school or teaching reforms. This study addresses this lack of knowledge. As such, it contributes to a stream of research that attempts to understand factors that contribute to student learning. The study setting is High Tech Middle North County (HTMNC), a charter school in San Marcos, CA. This case was chosen because of its unique and highly touted teaching practices based on relational and project-based pedagogies. Studying the implementation of these pedagogies and their meaning for the teachers and students at HTMNC will help researchers and educators better understand the role pedagogy plays in fostering teacher-student relationships. Through collegial relationships established by a project-based pedagogy, HTMNC teachers were able to develop positive relationships with students, allowing them to use these relationships to personalize curriculum and differentiate instruction, resulting in increased student motivation and engagement.

Abstract:

This project examines online learning tools and software that are applicable to K-12 and post-secondary distance learning environments. Powerpoint, Webquest and Inspiration 7 have been utilized to develop a lesson plan and storyboard that incorporate the constructivist theory of learning. An accompanying Web site, "Learning Tools for the On-Line Student," serves as a resource for instructional technology educators and includes information on designing lesson plans and evaluating students. The site also provides links to online tools and software that are useful in online learning environments.

Abstract:

The objective of the project was to develop an online educational technology tool based on research from multiple disciplines to improve effective communication between students, counselors, teachers, parents, and school staff. The website developed for the project aims to increase the involvement of parents in their child's academic progress. The project also includes discussions concerning the website's field testing at a middle school in Rosemead, California, its evaluation through participant surveys, and final revision. The field test participant instructions, survey questions, and a computer disc of the website accompanies the project.

Abstract:

Give an introduction to the proposed double CubeSat system and an overview of communication requirements and the propagation characteristics that influence the link budget. Based on the above findings, derive requirements for the ground station antenna. Emphasize simplicity and easy construction and propose an antenna system that may meet the requirements. Investigate it theoretically with available software to optimize its dimensions. A scale model of the antenna should finally be built and its main properties measured in an anechoic chamber.
