Haynes, David Antione II. "Improving enrollment projections through the application of geographic principles: Iowa 1999-2011." Diss., University of Iowa, 2014. https://ir.uiowa.edu/etd/4640.

Full text
Abstract:
Enrollment projections are used by school administrators to predict the number of students expected to attend a school district within a defined period of time. This dissertation examines methods used for making enrollment projections and seeks to improve these methods through the application of geographic principles. The presented thesis challenges the existing aspatial framework used to calculate grade progression rates, arguing that a spatial framework improves projection accuracy. Grade progression rates are the critical element in enrollment projections and this dissertation's major contribution is the analysis of four different grade progression rate calculations at the school district level. This dissertation also argues that grade progression rates represent spatial relationships of migration that exist between adjacent school districts and uses these spatial relationships to create a new spatial Bayesian approach. This dissertation demonstrates that geographic methods can be successfully integrated to improve enrollment project accuracy through the reduction of the small number problem. In addition, this research identifies the importance of smoothing effects of the modified cohort progression method when compared to Bayesian approaches.

Abstract:
Working as an architect means being able to see the main issues of a design, examining with objectivity the possible solutions and finally grasp the technical means necessary to accomplish the project. I think that it is important for an architect to be involved in the entire course of a project, since the process of "building" is a simultaneous rather than a sequential one. My architectural education and my work experience as an intern in architecture firms in Germany prepared me well for practice. It covered many technical issues and equipped me with the fundamentals of architectural assembly. Graduate education in the United States provided me with the academic environment to investigate my interests more deeply and to discover my personal strengths. It gave me the opportunity to formulate a mature and coherent position in my thinking and making. I still cannot explain everything intellectually, since many ideas are intuitively derived or spring from my sub-consciousness. But my theoretical and practical background combined with sincere feedback from my classmates and committee members provided the necessary climate to develop and elaborate architectural ideas. I see life as a continuous course of learning, where personal growth not only strengthens my confidence, but also contributes to the discipline of architecture and to society at large. An architect has a special responsibility towards society as he/she translates the spirit of time into the built cultural environment.

Torricelli, Emily. "Projecting the nation : constructions of Scotland in film since 1979." Thesis, University of York, 2016. http://etheses.whiterose.ac.uk/13597/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines questions of the continued significance of national cinemas and identities, focussing on the case of Scottish cinema. As a small, devolved nation with relative autonomy from the United Kingdom, Scotland presents an interesting case for how films are labelled with a national identity, as Scottish films can also often be understood in a British, European, and even global context. Rather than attempting to construct a working model of Scottish cinema based on representation or production context, I ask how films have been constructed as Scottish. I approach the concepts of Scotland and Scottish film as sets of meanings that are subject to change over time and in different contexts. This facilitates a perspective which asks in what ways Scotland and Scottishness is constructed in film. I examine how multiple identities are balanced in the filmic construction of Scotland first by considering how Scottish films—both those made in and which are about Scotland—from the early 1980s to the present construct Scottish identities. I will consider the way these films explored ‘traditional’ Scottish identities in the 1980s, Scottish masculinity in the 1990s, and Scottish identities based on ethnicity and gender in the 2000s and 2010s. Second, I look at how these films are received as Scottish by examining reviews and other press materials to determine how the Scottishness of the films considered is discursively constructed for potential audiences.

Naughten, Rebecca Claire. "Spain made flesh : reflections and projections of the national in contemporary Spanish stardom, 1992-2007." Thesis, University of Newcastle upon Tyne, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/10443/931.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis uses Higson’s (2000) approach to national cinemas (that they look inward and outward to define their boundaries) to investigate how Spanish stardom interacted with the national between 1992 and 2007. The thesis examines four specific stars as case studies, and finds that there is a correlation between the cinema produced and the stars created, and that stars are as reflective of their national cinema as they are of current cultural perceptions and conceptions of nationness. The thesis therefore provides a detailed investigation of contemporary Spanish stardom within the framework of the interrelations between Spanish cinema and the four chosen stars in their reflections and projections of the national. Perriam (2003), Babington (2001), and Vincendeau (2000) show that the relationship between stars and the national informs the shape and content of their stardom, but this thesis argues that stars negotiate industrial imperatives as well as the cultural contexts of their nation; the national, cultural, and industrial converge in the star image. In investigating the stardom of Javier Bardem, Penélope Cruz, Eduardo Noriega, and Paz Vega –who emerged at different points during the period– this thesis finds that the manner in which Spanish stars interacted with the national onscreen gradually changed owing to factors specific to the Spanish film industry in this era. Textual analysis of star images and performances and cultural contextualisation are employed to argue that as the influences within Spanish cinema have become more culturally diverse, and the boundaries of ‘Spanish cinema’ have expanded, newer Spanish stars are less obviously ingrained with Spanishness and their reflections and projections of the national become less overt. Although this is suggestive of a gradual dilution of national characteristics within Spanish cinema and stardom, this thesis finds that the newer stars nonetheless still reveal something of their changing Spanish culture and society.

Abstract:

Duncan, Rosemary. "Projecting Ireland : the historical consciousness of Irish film in the 1990's." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 1999. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/17615.

Abstract:
Bibliography: pages 112-114.
In the following dissertation, I have undertaken to explore the very wide-ranging yet largely unexplored territory of Irish cinema. I have confined my study to the 1990s (other than a brief overview of the Irish film industry in my Introduction) in an attempt to express the revolutionary global success that all aspects of Irish culture have experienced in this decade. The central point, which I reiterate throughout the dissertation, is that, while Irish filmmakers are increasingly concerned with defining "Irishness" for themselves and the world, they inevitably encounter much confusion and ambivalence, and are often criticised for it. For this reason, I have uncovered many ambiguities in the films I have watched, which defy strict categorisation, other than in terms of their settings, which I describe in terms of "war-torn Belfast", modern Dublin and "the rural idyll". Nonetheless, I have divided the essay into three main sections, other than the Introduction and Conclusion, which themselves contain subsections, and which encompass the major themes which recur in Irish films. Section Two is a broad study of those films which deal with the political violence, known as the Troubles, that defines Northern Ireland. This includes a stereotyped American portrayals as well as a more recent IRA bias, beginning with Neil Jordan's attempt to put a new version of history on film in Michael Collins. The conclusion I come to is that filmmakers are ultimately trying to provide a balanced view of the situation and one that condemns violence. Section Three deals with the intertwined themes of women, family, sexuality and the Catholic Church. The traditional conservatism in Ireland is outlined before I show how recent films reflect the changes in moral attitudes and the new freedoms of sexuality that the younger generation is experiencing. Lastly I look at the special situation of women in the North, where they and their families are the long-suffering victims of the violence. Section Four continues the theme of the changes which are sweeping over "Modern Ireland", largely due to its opening-up to outside influences, particularly those of America. The dichotomies of this newly-modernised society are still evident, as I discuss in the section on the historical importance of land, which is expressed not only in the "rural idyll" films, but in those which deal with the move to the urban lure and squalor of Dublin. Finally I look at how the traditional and mythical still exist in modern Ireland, and how the combination of these aspects of the past and present is shown to suggest a positive way into the future.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This unprecedented study addresses an unknown fold of Cinema History in education. The network « Freinet », named after its instigator Celestin Freinet, has played, since the end of the 20’s, an important role, by introducing the cinema into school in France. It brings together, outside the traditional system, educators campaining for new learning methods ; « experimenters » who use uncommon tools such as cinema in their class. Nowadays, if the network « Freinet » does still exist, the study is limited to the founders experimentations (1927 – 1968). This historical flashback aims to discover uncommon uses, also demonstrating a great modernity. Practices establish the main lead of the analysis in order to define a particularism in terms of uses of cinema in class, opposite common uses of movies as support of the lesson. The pupil becomes « actor ». This learning acceptance paves the way for new types of projection. It also opens the way for cinema as an expressing, creating and developing tool

Perry, Theresa Fried. "Functional relationship between forebrain cholinergic projections and somatostatin neurons in the rat." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1990. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/41603.

Full text
Abstract:
The two neuron types that initially degenerate with Alzheimer's Disease are the cholinergic projections from the septum to the hippocampus and from the substantia innominata to the cortex, and the somatostatinergic neurons in the hippocampus and cortex. The functional relationship between these two types of neurons was investigated using folic acid, a neuro-excitant, and cysteamine, a somatostatin depleter. Folic acid causes a neuron to fire at a much higher rate than normal (Spector, 1971). Folic acid was injected into either the septum or the substantia innominata, and the long-term effect of the resulting acute hyperactivity of the cholinergic neurons on somatostatin neurons was measured as somatostatin-like immunoreactivity in the hippocampus and cortex. Glutamic acid decarboxylase activity, a marker for gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA) neurons, was also measured because it has been shown to decrease in the cortex after injection of folic acid into the substantia innominata. The administration of folic acid to the cholinergic neurons did not have a significant long-term effect on somatostatin-like immunoreactivity nor glutamic acid decarboxylase activity; therefore, a hyperactivity of the cholinergic neurons did not result in degeneration of GABAergic nor somatostatinergic neurons. Cysteamine causes a short-term depletion of somatostatin. Cysteamine was injected subcutaneously and the effect of an acute decrease of brain somatostatin on the cholinergic neurons was studied by measuring high affinity choline uptake, an indicator of cholinergic activity. Administration of cysteamine had no measured effect on high affinity choline uptake in the hippocampus or frontal cortex; therefore, a depletion of somatostatin did not effect cholinergic activity. The assay for high affinity choline uptake was tested by injection of pentobarbital, a drug known to decrease high affinity choline uptake. We detected a decrease in high affinity choline uptake after pentobarbital administration, indicating that if cysteamine were decreasing high affinity choline uptake, the assay would have detected it.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The European Union's development policy towards the South is one of the oldest EU policies. ‘Accidentally’ enshrined in the 1957 Rome Treaty, it has become, after more than five decades of European construction, an essential component of the EU's external action. Indeed, the Union now accounts for almost 60% of global official development aid (ODA), giving credence to Europe's leadership claim on the international development stage. However, behind the façade, said "Europe" is composed of “27+1” donors (the Commission and the 27 Member states), all of which jealously defend their prerogatives and their preferences. Such fragmentation undermines the EU's effectiveness, as well as its influence. Within the last few years, EU-level collective action in the development field has appeared both increasingly necessary (to tackle the challenges of a globalized and interdependent world) and opportune (to assert the EU's role in world affairs). EU donors have thus accepted a growing degree of integration, committing to a common political framework, a code of conduct on implementation, and agreed financial targets. This painstaking but undeniable process of change denotes the emergence of a truly 'European' development policy, based on common values and interests, as well as on a renewed international ambition. Through the development lens, the making of this collective policy offers an original insight as to how “Europe” is constructed on the long term, fabricated daily, and projected internationally

Abstract:
At the end of 1946, the French Navy revival achieves a significant step with the rebirth of a carrier-borne aviation. In the same time, the Viet Minh revolts in Hanoi, which marks the beginning of a ten years conflict. In such a context, the French Navy engages shortly after, her just reborn carrier-borne aviation during the two thirds of the first Indochina war. The first series of campaigns between 1947 and 1949 appears modest but full of promises for the future. The second series between 1951 and 1954, shows a bigger involvement of the carrier-borne aviation with the assistance of the military assistance program from United States within the North Atlantic Treaty and reveals a power projection capability of carrier-borne aviation. The involvement of the carrier-borne aviation does not change the outcome of the conflict, but had a very positive impact on the French Navy revival in process. It helped her, after ten years of unsuccessful attempts to obtain the building of two carrier vessels as well as the production of carrier-borne strike and recon jet aircraft

Abstract:

Abstract:
After an orientation focusing on export and inward FDI, China continues its integration into worldeconomy by an accelerated projection of its economy to the world, which is demonstrated by Chinesecompanies’ outward direct investment. In a very short time, China has become the main source of FDI flow among developing countries. This phonomenon has shown particular characteristics and has taken off at an unexpected scale and speed. The state economy of China leads us to conclude usually that there is any political motivation and national strategy behind these activities. Nevertheless, the government didn’t play a decisive role in this phenomenon. The behaviors of home country’s government is in fact one of the exogenious factors that can affect the OLI configuration [Dunning, 1993a] of its companies and therefore the characteristics of the outward investment activities of its companies. The dynamic and the specificities of Chinese investors are rather derived from a strong entrepreneurial desire which coincides with a maturation of Chinese companies thanks to the economic development of China. An in-depth study on Chinese companies’ motivations has shown us tha! t market-seeking is the principal motivation of Chinese companie’ outwart investment and they possess ex ante specific advantages derived from their nationality, such as capital market imperfection, flexibility and networking capacity

Abstract:
The literary oblivion Gabriel Miró (Alicante, 1879 – Madrid, 1930) has fallen into nowadays invited a revision of his work. As he was a difficult author, he never had a mass readership. But he did have many more readers than today. Miró was, indeed, a literary eminence. He was awarded distinguished prizes such as the Mariano de Cavia for journalism, and was involved in debates that were very controversial in the media. In this thesis I have discussed the possibility that Miró has been neglected because of a specific way of reading his work. From the very beginning of his literary career, he has been considered a poet in prose, a lyricist or even a stylist, overlooking his qualities as a (Modernist/Avant-Garde) novelist and the ideological and social content that, although subtly, is found in his books. This, of course, distanced him from the reader, as literary taste for the last 100 years or more has favoured the novel of dramatic development which is best represented by the best-seller. It has been argued that it was the Generation of 1927, and especially its poets Pedro Salinas, Jorge Guillén, Dámaso Alonso and Gerardo Diego, who are responsible for this lyrical reading. They praised Miró, but their view, although more positive than previous clichés, was still in the sphere of the poet. Certainly, there are stylistic influences (defined here by the broader notion of projections) to be found in the poetry of these authors. However, in order to promote a new and narrative interpretation of Miró‘s work, I have studied how these stylistic devices, as well as narrative techniques and structures, are projected in four of the novelists of this generation – Benjamín Jarnés, Juan Chabás, José Ballester and Carmen Conde.

Kammer, Quentin. Thesis, Bordeaux 3, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018BOR30034.

Full text
Abstract:
This PhD dissertation examines how Nelson Goodman understands rightness of projection, i.e. the transition from a set of items to a wider one. A projection is justified by its conformity to general rules of projection and rules are justified by their conformity to some projections we consider valid. To justify, all one needs to do is to describe: a rule is justified if it can count as a description of admitted projections. Yet this call for description faces a dilemma. If a rule is a standard for rightness of its applications, how could it be justified by its sole descriptive adequacy to those cases of application? If a rule is justified by nothing else, what could distinguish it from a mere description of our regular behaviors? Our object is to show how Goodman could resolve this dilemma

Full text
Abstract:
Through the contextual case study of the Lithuanian foreign military intervention policy, this doctoral dissertation explores the possibility of translating the theories of recognition, a philosophical framework introduced in the social sciences in the early 1990s, into the sociological and empirical analysis of interstate relations. For this purpose, I make use of various concepts of social sciences such as context, gift, and role. I demonstrate that the theories of recognition have the advantage of combining the symbolic and strategic dimensions of international action in the same interpretative framework. Thus, this theoretical approach provides a nuanced perspective of the reasons leading States to act internationally.Following an in-depth qualitative analysis of juridical and political documents regulating Lithuanian involvement in external military operations since 1994, semi-structured interviews with different actors who participated in the decision-making and the implementation processes of this policy, as well as archives and grey literature produced by the Lithuanian Ministry of Defense, this work highlights that the deployment of the Lithuanian troops abroad constitutes a tool for the authorities of this Baltic state to express a request for international recognition. The involvement of the armed forces outside the national territory is motivated by the search of long-lasting reciprocal relations between Lithuania and its allies and partners based on the recognition of their common belonging to the Western community. In order to achieve this goal, Vilnius’s involvement in military interventions is both active and “Atlanticist”, i.e. mainly focusing on the U.S. and NATO led international military missions

Abstract:
This PhD work analyses the challenges of the transition to the digital projection of the cinema distribution sector in France between 1999 and 2018. Following a socio-economic approach of cinema, it lightens up the technological transition process in order to account for the process logic, the stakeholder’s strategies and the balance of the power relations, but also in order to provide an analytical comprehension of the technical, socio-economic and political changes in the cinema sector in its entirety. The research is based on discourse analysis of a field survey of 48 professionals from the sector and a study of the French corporate magazine Le Film Français between 1999 and 2018.Driven and imposed by the Hollywood majors in the 2000s, the digitization of cinematographic diffusion accelerated worldwide in 2009 following the announcement of the Avatar movie release. Financially, this change relied on the principle of sharing the costs between the main broadcasting players, which meant introducing a tax: the VPF. In France, the switchover to digital cinema has been monitored and financially supported by the public authorities, so that by the end of 2014 the movie theaters have been fully equipped. Therefore, the digitization of film distribution modifies the tasks, the « know-how » and the skills required for the sector lines. It also generates different restructuring of the field mainly linked to economic imperatives within the cinema sector wholeness. Furthermore, the growing impact of technical intermediation questions the historical dynamics of power and relations among the traditional actors in the sector, raising issues of concentration, diversity and regulation

This study analyses the Brazilian foreign policy under Geisel (1974-1979) and Lula (2003-2010) administrations by using the comparative method. One of the study‟s core objectives is to show that one can observe a “relative continuity” in the Brazilian diplomacy during both periods: even though one cannot observe a process without any rupture in the Brazilian foreign policy from 1974 to 2010, it is possible to verify that Lula administration resumed some guidelines, methods and rationales which were employed by the Brazilian foreign policy during Geisel administration. It is assumed that this resumption is related to national interest concept and the adoption of a realist strategy aimed at widening Brazil‟s international projection – in spite of different international contexts and different power resources.

Abstract:
‘Brazil will be the biggest energy power in the planet in twenty or thirty years’. President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva gave this statement in 2006. It demonstrates the ambition of his government to transform the energy in an asset to a better positioning of Brazil in the International System. Using the concept of Logistic State from Amado Cervo, this research aims to analyse the projection of energy (specifically petroleum, nuclear and ethanol) within the Brazilian foreign policy during Lula’s two mandates (2003-2010), as well as its impacts on the strategy of projecting Brazil internationally. Energy appears in this study as an instrument of foreign policy, noticing that the ‘fabrication’ of this object happens within the Brazilian territory, through the interaction of public and private actors. The originality of this study is the emphasis on interactions of national sectional actors with the Foreign Policy Ministry and with the president. Through a literature research, the analysis of official documents as well as interviews with energy players, we demonstrate that the deployment of the foreign policy on energy issues is the result of internal interactions and influences, but also of international constraints

Fung, Cheryl. "The fiscal impacts of use-value taxation in Prince William County, Virginia." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1995. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/42232.

Full text
Abstract:

Concern that high property taxation of agricultural land encourages its conversion to nonagricultural uses has led to the adoption of use-value taxation practices. Use-value taxation has had mixed results as a deterrent to the conversion of agricultural and open space land. It has been argued that use-value taxation does not succeed in retaining open space along the rura1-urban fringe (Stocker 1975; Ferguson), and further that such programs may actually lower the community's property tax base significantly (Tiebout; Anderson 1993). Additionally, when land is taxed by its usevalue rather than market-value, the local tax base declines curtailing local public services and consequently reducing the attractiveness of the community for residential, commercial and industrial land uses (Abeyratne and Johnson, Bickerdike, Netzer, Oates).

This study seeks to determine the fiscal impacts of use-value taxation and incurred and immediate revenues generated by a particular land use project. By comparing the net impact on the property tax rate of different land uses, the effectiveness of land use taxation policies for communities can be determined. The fiscal impact of alternative land uses are measured using The Virginia Impact Projection (VIP) model. The empirical models employed are based on a static cross-sectional econometric analysis of Virginia counties initially developed by Johnson and Keeling and updated for the current analysis using more recent data. The empirical equations are used to construct a fiscal impact assessment (simulation) model. The simulation model allows the comparison of impact and baseline scenarios developed using alternative land uses.

It was found that the impact offarmland enrollment in use-value assessment programs is not as large when net impacts are considered rather than sole consideration of the direct property tax revenue changes.

Abstract:

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is devoted to a problem in the representation theory of the symmetric group over C (the field of the complex numbers). Let d be a positive integer, and let S_d denote the symmetric group on d letters. Given a partition k of d, the Specht module V_k is a finite dimensional vector space over C which admits a natural basis indexed by all standard tableaux of shape k with entries in {1, 2, ..., d}. It affords an irreducible representation of the symmetric group S_d, and conversely every irreducible representation of S_d is isomorphic to V_k for some partition k. Given two Specht modules V_k, V_t their tensor product representation is in general reducible, and hence it splits into a direct sum of irreducibles. This raises the problem of describing the S_d equivariant projection morphisms (alternately called S_d-homomorphisms) in terms of the standard tableaux basis. In this work we give explicit formulae describing this morphism in the following cases: k=(d-1, 1), (d-2, 1,1), (2, 1,... ,1). Finally, we present a conjecture formula for the q-morphism in the case k=(d-r, 1, ..., 1).

Full text
Abstract:
Dynamic modeling of the atmospheric flight mechanics of a projectile equipped with an uncontrolled internal rotating disk is investigated and a modified projectile linear theory is established. It is shown through modeling of this type of projectile that several coefficients of the epicyclic dynamics are altered, leading to changes in the fast and slow epicyclic modes. A study of the frequency and damping properties of the epicyclic modes is conducted by systematically varying disk orientation, location, mass, and rotational speed. It is shown that the presence of an internal rotating disk can cause substantial changes in the epicyclic dynamics, suggesting the potential of a rotating internal part as a possible control mechanism. A further study considers the active trajectory control of a projectile using a mass unbalance, created by the radial orientation of an internal part. To evaluate the potential of this concept, a seven degree-of-freedom flight dynamic model of a projectile equipped with an internal part is defined. It is shown that by holding the internal part fixed with respect to a non-rolling reference frame, predictable trajectory changes are generated including predictable impact point changes. It is also shown that using the same control mechanism and destabilizing the projectile by fundamentally altering the inertia and, or aerodynamic properties of the projectile can lead to greater control authority.

Maltais, Lapointe Geneviève. "Validation using 3D CT of the new interpretation of Gerasimov’s nasal projection method for forensic facial approximation." 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/22023.

Full text
Abstract:
Approximating the facial features for forensic facial approximation is challenging, especially the nose. Numerous methods have been published to position the tip of the nose in profile with variable results. Gerasimov’s two-tangent method is the most commonly used. However, a recent article published by Ullrich and Stephan (2011) states that the method was not properly performed and provides new guidelines. This research used a sample of CT scans from a Denmark population (N=66) to determined which of Gerasimov’s literal translation or Ullrich and Stephan’s (2011) new version of the two-tangent method is the most accurate. A combination of the two methods was also evaluated to determine the effect of each tangent independently, and the effect of intraobserver error. It was determine that the new guidelines result in smaller mean difference but no method can accurately position the tip of the nose due to the lack of experience from the practitioner.

Chandgadkar, Siddharth Suhaschandra. "Performance of a smart direct fire penetrator using a ram air controlled mechanism." Thesis, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/1957/32103.

Full text
Abstract:
The effectiveness of a direct fire penetrator projectile equipped with an actively controlled ram air mechanism is investigated through dynamic simulation. The ram air control mechanism consists of a rotary sleeve valve which directs air flow from an inlet at the center of the nose to side ports. The projectile dynamics, the inertial measurement unit and the control system are included in the system model. It is shown that the ram air control mechanism provides sufficient control authority to significantly reduce dispersion of a direct fire penetrator. The effects of accelerometer and gyroscope bias and noise are investigated. It is seen that moderate values of bias and noise do not affect the dispersion significantly. But with higher values the dispersion is greater than the dispersion for the free flight.

Melvin, Cameron. "Design, development and implementation of a parallel algorithm for computed tomography using algebraic reconstruction technique." Thesis, 2006. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/292.

Full text
Abstract:
This project implements a parallel algorithm for Computed Tomography based on the Algebraic Reconstruction Technique (ART) algorithm. This technique for reconstructing pictures from projections is useful for applications such as Computed Tomography (CT or CAT). The algorithm requires fewer views, and hence less radiation, to produce an image of comparable or better quality. However, the approach is not widely used because of its computationally intensive nature in comparison with rival technologies. A faster ART algorithm could reduce the amount of radiation needed for CT imaging by producing a better image with fewer projections. A reconstruction from projections version of the ART algorithm for two dimensions was implemented in parallel using the Message Passing Interface (MPI) and OpenMP extensions for C. The message passing implementation did not result in faster reconstructions due to prohibitively long and variant communication latency. The shared memory implementation produced positive results, showing a clear computational advantage for multiple processors and measured efficiency ranging from 60-95%. Consistent with the literature, image quality proved to be significantly better compared to the industry standard Filtered Backprojection algorithm especially when reconstructing from fewer projection angles.

Taira, Kunihiko (Sam). "The Immersed Boundary Projection Method and Its Application to Simulation and Control of Flows Around Low-Aspect-Ratio Wings." Thesis, 2008. https://thesis.library.caltech.edu/1990/3/Taira_thesis.pdf.

Full text
Abstract:

First, we present a new formulation of the immersed boundary method that is algebraically identical to the traditional fractional step algorithm. This method, called the immersed boundary projection method, allows for the simulations of incompressible flows over arbitrarily shaped bodies under motion and/or deformation in both two and three dimensions. The no-slip condition along the immersed boundary is enforced simultaneously with the incompressibility constraint through a single projection. The boundary force is determined implicitly without any constitutive relations for the rigid body formulation, which in turn allows the use of high CFL numbers in our simulations compared to past methods.

Next, the above immersed boundary projection method is used to analyze three-dimensional separated flows around low-aspect-ratio flat-plate wings. A number of simulations highlighting the unsteady nature of the separated flows are performed for Re = 300 and 500 with various aspect ratios, angles of attack, and planform geometries. The aspect ratio and angle of attack are found to have a large influence on the stability of the wake profile and the force experienced by the low-aspect-ratio wing. At early times, following an impulsive start, topologies of the wake vortices are found to be the same across different aspect ratios and angles of attack. Behind low-aspect-ratio rectangular plates, leading-edge vortices form and eventually separate as hairpin vortices following the start-up. This phenomenon is found to be similar to dynamic stall observed behind pitching plates. The detached structure would then interact with the tip vortices, reducing the downward velocity induced by the tip vortices acting upon the leading-edge vortex. At large time, depending on the aspect ratio and angles of attack, the wakes reach one of the three states: (i) a steady state, (ii) a periodic unsteady state, or (iii) an aperiodic unsteady state. We have observed that the tip effects in three-dimensional flows can stabilize the flow and also exhibit nonlinear interaction with the shedding vortices.

At last, we apply steady blowing to separated flows behind the low-aspect-ratio rectangular wings. The objective of the flow control is to enhance lift at post-stall angles of attack by changing the dynamics of the wake vortices. This controller strengthens the tip vortices by engulfing the trailing-edge vortex sheet to increase the downward thrust and the downward induced velocity onto the leading-edge vortices. The tip vortices that are traditionally considered as an aerodynamic nuisance, have been used favorably to increase lift in post-stall flows for the considered low-aspect-ratio wings.

Evans, Tara Jane. "It’s not just about birds: the other negative space in Alfred Hitchcock – cinematic dream vernacular and the phenomenology of fear." 2013. http://hdl.handle.net/1993/22079.

Full text
Abstract:
Foundational to almost any Hitchcock film is the idea of the voyeur: the (un)natural inclination to want to look upon the private, obscene, and potentially grizzly instances in other peoples’ lives. Such inclinations are typically satiated in secret and subsequently denied as something we desire. The voyeuristic act may be connected to narcissism in that we are seduced by our own fears and inner hells projected onto the watched ‘other.’ This kind of projection not only perpetuates our sense of denial of what are our own inclinations, but it also precipitates the potential for de-humanization and feelings of emptiness in that we detach from ourselves. The phenomenological paradox to such detachment is that the more we insist we are safe and self-enclosed here while the ‘other’ remains at bay there, the more we are convinced that we know ourselves and are connected to ourselves, when arguably, we couldn’t be more detached from ourselves and our humanity. And by not really knowing ourselves as well as we thought – as we might infer from a kind of ‘doppelganger’ or ‘doubles’ reading of Strangers on a Train, for example – is how fear is born, both in a Hitchcock film and in life generally. How then, might we come to truly know or face our fear if estrangement would seem an inherent quality to our very experience of it?

Yeh, Jun-Yen 1970. "Cost-effectiveness analyses of anti-resorptive agents for management of glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis and fractures: empirical estimates from the 1996-2004 MEPS data and longitudinal projection from Markov modeling." Thesis, 2007. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/3366.

Full text
Abstract:
Long-term glucocorticoid use leads to glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis (GIOP) and fractures which require proper management. Little is known about the "real-world," long-term costs and effectiveness of anti-osteoporotic treatments. A retrospective analysis of data from the 1996-2004 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey was conducted to evaluate the "real-world" outcomes. Markov modeling with Monte Carlo simulations was used to yield long-term estimates of these outcomes. A total of 5,461 subjects met the study criteria for long-term glucocorticoid users (LTGS, average prednisone-equivalent dose=11.0 mg/day, average length=237 days), which represents 2.3% of the non-institutional U.S. population. The study subjects tended to be middle-aged (49.7 years old), female (61.4%) and white (86.2%). Overall 22.4% of LTGS users reported use of any anti-osteoporotic agent. Hormone replacement therapy (HRT) was the most frequently used in women followed by bisphosphonates, while bisphosphonates and calcitonin were used by men. Analyses of variance indicated some significant differences in characteristics of LTGS users among treatment groups which suggest a selection bias. Female LTGS users had higher prevalence rates (6.8%) of osteoporosis than males (1.0%), but the prevalence rates of osteoporotic fractures were similar (3.0%). The logistic regression analyses indicated that the use of oral glucocorticoid tablets does not significantly change the odds of osteoporotic fractures in study subjects (relative risk (RR)=1.146, 95% confidence interval (CI) 0.901-1.458 for subjects in the WELL state; RR=0.55, 95% CI 0.188-1.621 for subjects in the GIOP state; RR=1.241, 95% CI 0.532-2.893 for subjects in the GIFX state). The estimated 10-year and lifetime incremental cost per osteoporotic fracture avoided are $27,253-$35,692 (10-year) and $84,942-$91,075 (lifetime) in hypothetical female glucocorticoid users. HRT is the most cost-effective option for hypothetical females except that calcitonin is preferred for 65-year-old females receiving lifetime treatments. When HRT is excluded, calcitonin is the next most cost-effective option except that raloxifene is preferred for 30- and 50-year-old females receiving 10-year treatments. Calcitonin is the most cost-effective option for male glucocorticoid users. Bisphosphonates are less cost-effective which may be due to selection bias. Anti-osteoporotic treatments are recommended for all long-term glucocorticoid users, but the preferred option depends on gender, age, length of treatments and budgets.
