Purpose: The purpose with this paper is to give an insight, and to compare, the project management of two IT-projects – one which product was implemented and put into use, and one, which was implemented but no longer exists on the market. Furthermore also examine the critical success factors that influence the success respectively the failure of the IT-projects.
Method: To attain the purpose with our study we have chosen a qualitative method. We have carried out interviews with two of the project managers of the IT-project of the two large companies.
Result: A couple of problems occurred within the IT-projects of the large companies. Difficulties concerning cooperation, lacking leadership, unclear demand specifications were some of the problems that complicated the project work. Some of these problems can be related to the fact that the success of the project was, for the most part, determined by whether it would be completed within a certain time period, which had a negative impact on the quality. Both projects had problems with the factors that are viewed to be critical for the success of a project. The study shows that factors that influenced both projects to a large extent can be related to the categories communication, competence and other factors that can be related to the resources of the projects.

Full textBackground: During the last years agile project management has grown in popularity and to a larger extent been used as a method outside of software projects. The majority of the research is still limited to software project and regards that projects are either fully agile, not agile at all or one specific hybrid model. Therefore there is a need of increased knowledge of how agile project management can be used and understood in a traditional project environment. Aim: The aim of this study is to develop the knowledge of agile methods in a “traditional” project environment with what characterizes and affects the degree of agility in the four different dimensions. Methodology: This study is a multiple case study based on six different projects. Furthermore the study is of qualitative character and the empirical data is collected via semi structured interviews based on the six cases. Conclusions: The results of the study showed that agile project management can be divided into the four dimensions and within degrees of agility. To each degree and dimension we have found clear characteristics and what that affects them. Furthermore we have found that no project are fully agile, not agile at all and neither is there a specific model that would fit all projects which motivates that agile methods should be about degrees of agility.

Full textIntroduction: It has become more common for companies to operate their businesses on a project basis. Projects have gained significance and are frequently occurring within the industry and administration. The company at hand for this case study is Södra Cell Mörrum, a company that operates within the processing industry. Projects are conducted on a daily basis with varying sizes at Södra Cell Mörrum. The company has experienced issues in their project management when it comes to ensuring knowledge transfer in between projects. Science within the area of project management is comprehensive, although when conducted in connection with knowledge transfer it is not as extensive. A gap has been found after a thorough search within the area of project management combined with knowledge transfer related to the processing industry. Purpose: The purpose of this study is to map the project management of Södra Cell Mörrum in a compilation. The compilation identifies flaws regarding knowledge transfer in between projects. Furthermore, the project management of Södra Cell Mörrum will be compared and analyzed based on existing theories within the research area of project management related to knowledge transfer in order to suggest a developed model that ensures knowledge transfer. Method: The area of research for this study has been the project management of Södra Cell Mörrum, hence being a case study following a deductive research approach. The premise takes place in existing theories whom have been intertwined with empirical material ranging from semi-structured interviews and documents. A qualitative direction has been chosen for this study to gain an enhanced insight in the project management of Södra Cell Mörrum. Conclusion: The flaws that have been identified within the project management of Södra Cell Mörrum are constituted by a lack of time as well as a deficiency regarding a systematic documentation of mistakes and experiences. In order for the company to secure knowledge transfer within the project management it is recommended that the milestone planning is changed towards including two additional milestones. These milestones consist of reverberation meetings and project reports, both of whom manage the flaws mentioned above.

Full textBackground: The fact that companies carry out projects have become more common inrecent decades. Projects are often described based on the time limit that surrounds theproject where the project is unique while it is part of the company's history and the futureability to conduct project work. It has proved difficult to control projects based on the modelscreated for traditional organizations and there is a need for increased knowledge on howcontrol can be understood in relation to projects. Aim: The aim of this study is to contribute to increased understanding of the similarities anddifferences in what leads to change in different projects and how the management of projectscan be understood from the company's control system. Methodology: This study is based on two projects and the companies the projects are partof. The study has a qualitative approach in which semistructured interviews were used fordata collection. Conclusions: Management's change in projects can not only be explained by studyingcurrent and situational variables. Current and situational variables are important tounderstand why management changes, but by studying the history of companies andprojects, the change of management can be better explained. The impact of the projectmanager and project members on the change of control is important in explaining whymanagement changes based on different starting points in different projects.

Full textThe majority of companies today work with projects whether the aim is to reorganize thecompany’s infrastructure or develop a new product or service. Several models, such as PPS andPROPS, have been developed for this purpose. PPS was develop in the late 1980s by Tieto, andis today the model of choice for a wide range of different companies in Sweden. Companieschoose to either purchase consulting from Tieto or customize the PPS model for their own line ofbusiness. A project can generally be divided into three phases: initiation, execution and closure. Theinitiation phase is considered to be the most important phase because it can minimize the risks ofa project failing. It is during this process where the decision to continue the project or to put itdown is made. Important questions that should be answered is whether or not the goals projectare realistic, if time and cos is in line with the expected revenue and if the company has thecapacity to complete the project. It is very important to minimize the uncertainty surrounding theproject and set up clear objectives. The purpose of this study was to examine how and why ICA has developed its own projectmodel from the PPS model. An initial study on the PPS model was made before The empiricaldata was collected through informal interviews with a group called Operational Excellence(Opex), which handles the projects at ICA DE Kallhäll. It was during these interviews where theproject model of ICA was thoroughly mapped out. The conclusion made was that the ICA's made some minor changes in their model compared toPPS in order to adapt it to their own operations. ICA is a large group where different branchesoften work individually with a directive from the board. By simplifying the PPS model, ICA DEKallhäll are able to complete projects at a faster rate with less bureaucracy.
