Abstract:
In the Byzantine period mosaic floors became an essential element of interior decoration, in domestic as well as sacral spaces. Mosaic patterns spread all over the Mediterranean basin, even to the less significant settlements. Ancient Porphyreon (modern Jiyeh in Lebanon), a Levantine coastal village on the ancient Via Maris was no exception. Recent excavations by a Polish–Lebanese archaeological project confirmed the presence of mosaic floors, mainly in the Domestic Quarter. Technological analyses coupled with a study of the decoration and iconographical motifs have shed light on mosaic craftsmanship in Jiyeh. The mosaics from the Domestic Quarter in Jiyeh are discussed in comparison with well-known examples from nearby sites.

Abstract:
The publication of these two volumes completes Neal and Cosh's corpus of all the decorated mosaics known from Roman Britain, the first complete catalogue of mosaics from any of the Roman provinces. It is a tremendous achievement, the culmination of almost ninety years' combined work on the part of the authors, going back to 1959 when David Neal painted his first mosaic at Verulamium. The statistics are mind-boggling: the four volumes of the corpus list nearly 2,000 mosaics (double the number known before the project started), from about 500 sites, with nearly 3,000 illustrations. Just to compile this much material would be a heroic task; the fact that the authors have also painted hundreds of the mosaics tessera by tessera is little short of astonishing.

Abstract:
Mosaic floors of surviving buildings in Ostia have been mainly recorded in photographs. From 2008, Japanese research group carries out a project of 3d measuring of the whole structure of ancient Roman city Ostia using laser scanners, including its landscape, city blocks, streets, buildings, wall paintings and mosaics. The laser scanner allows for a more detailed analysis and a greater potential for recording mosaics. We can record the data of mosaics, which are described piece by piece. However it is hard to acquire enough high dense point cloud and the internal camera of the laser scanner produce low quality images. We introduce a possible technology of 3D recording of mosaics with high-quality colour information; SFM. The use of this technique permits us to create 3D models from images provided from a CCD camera without heavy and large laser scanners. We applied SFM system to different three types of the mosaics laid down on the floors of "the House of the Dioscuroi", "the Insula of the Muse" and "the House of Jove and Ganymede", and created high resolution orthographic images. Then we examined to compare these orthographic images with that are created from the point cloud data. As a result, we confirmed that SFM system has sufficient practical utility for the mosaic research. And we present how much of density of point cloud or ground resolution are required for the documentation of mosaics accurately.

Abstract:
Some early modern scholars believed that Scripture provided more certain knowledge than all secular authorities – even Aristotle – or investigating nature as such. In this paper, I analyse one such attempt to establish the most reliable knowledge of nature: the so-called Mosaic physics proposed by the Reformed encyclopaedist Johann Heinrich Alsted. Although in his early works on Physica Mosaica Alsted declares that his primary aim is proving the harmony that exists between various traditions of natural philosophy, namely between the Mosaic and the Peripatetic approaches, and despite the fact that his biblical encyclopaedia of 1625 was intended to be based on a literal reading of the Bible, he never truly abandoned the Aristotelian framework of physics. What is more, in his mature encyclopaedia of 1630, he eventually openly preferred Aristotle to other natural-philosophical traditions. I argue, therefore, that Alsted’s bold vision of Mosaic physics remained unfulfilled and should be assessed as an unsuccessful project of early modern natural philosophy.

AbstractThis is a review of a project aimed at assisting the Libyan Department of Archaeology with the conservation and management of their mosaic heritage. Over the course of a year we undertook an evaluation trip along the coast of Libya and then put on two workshops for the Department's staff to help build capacity. The workshops disseminated complementary content on the protection of mosaics and their management to two different contingents: managers and technicians. The teaching was intended to empower Libyans by giving them the confidence to make simple and sound decisions, and to encourage them to join more formal training courses run by major international organisations. The project was a collaboration with the Department and was supported by the Getty Foundation, King's College London and the Society for Libyan Studies.

Abstract:
Abstract. We present the Programme for Monitoring of the Greenland Ice Sheet (PROMICE) Ice Velocity product (https://doi.org/10.22008/promice/data/sentinel1icevelocity/greenlandicesheet, Solgaard and Kusk, 2021), which is a time series of Greenland Ice Sheet ice velocity mosaics spanning September 2016 through to the present. The product is based on Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar data and has a 500 m grid spacing. A new mosaic is available every 12 d and spans two consecutive Sentinel-1 cycles (24 d). The product is made available within ∼ 10 d of the last acquisition and includes all possible 6 and 12 d pairs within the two Sentinel-1A cycles. We describe our operational processing chain from data selection, mosaicking, and error estimation to final outlier removal. The product is validated against in situ GPS measurements. We find that the standard deviation of the difference between satellite- and GPS-derived velocities (and bias) is 20 m yr−1 (−3 m yr−1) and 27 m yr−1 (−2 m yr−1) for the components in an eastern and northern direction, respectively. Over stable ground the values are 8 m yr−1 (0.1 m yr−1) and 12 m yr−1 (−0.6 m yr−1) in an eastern and northern direction, respectively. This is within the expected values; however, we expect that the GPS measurements carry a considerable part of this uncertainty. We investigate variations in coverage from both a temporal and spatial perspective. The best spatial coverage is achieved in winter due to the comprehensive data coverage by Sentinel-1 and high coherence, while summer mosaics have the lowest coverage due to widespread melt. The southeast Greenland Ice Sheet margin, along with other areas of high accumulation and melt, often has gaps in the ice velocity mosaics. The spatial comprehensiveness and temporal consistency make the product ideal both for monitoring and for studying ice-sheet-wide and glacier-specific ice discharge and dynamics of glaciers on seasonal scales.

Abstract:
Abstract STUDY QUESTION What is the potential of applying non-invasive preimplantation genetic testing (niPGT) for chromosome abnormalities in blastocysts reported with a mosaic trophectoderm (TE) biopsy? SUMMARY ANSWER niPGT of cell-free DNA in blastocyst culture medium exhibited a good diagnostic performance in putative mosaic blastocysts. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY Advances in niPGT have demonstrated the potential reliability of cell-free DNA as a resource for genetic assessment, but information on mosaic embryos is scarce because the mosaicism may interfere with niPGT. In addition, the high incidence of mosaicism reported in the context of PGT and the viability of mosaic blastocysts raise questions about whether mosaicism really exists. STUDY DESIGN, SIZE, DURATION The study was performed between May 2020 and July 2020. First, clinical data collected by a single-center over a 6-year period on PGT for chromosome aneuploidies (PGT-A) or chromosomal structural rearrangements (PGT-SR) were analyzed. After confirming the reliability of niPGT, 41 blastocysts classified as mosaics by trophectoderm (TE) biopsy were re-cultured. The chromosomal copy number of the blastocyst embryo (BE, the gold standard), TE re-biopsy, and corresponding cell-free DNA in the culture medium was assessed. PARTICIPANTS/MATERIALS, SETTING, METHODS Data on patients enrolled for PGT at a single center from 2014 to 2019 were collected and the cycles with available putative mosaic blastocysts were evaluated. To verify the diagnostic validity of niPGT, eight aneuploid blastocysts were thawed and re-cultured for 14–18 h. The concordance of the niPGT diagnosis results and the whole blastocyst testing results was analyzed. Forty-one blastocysts reported as mosaics from 22 patients were included and re-cultured for 14–18 h. The genetic material of the BE, TE re-biopsy, and corresponding cell-free DNA in the culture medium was amplified using multiple annealing and looping-based amplification cycles. The karyotype data from niPGT and TE re-biopsy were compared with that from the whole blastocyst, and the efficiency of niPGT was assessed. MAIN RESULTS AND THE ROLE OF CHANCE Data on 3738 blastocysts from 785 PGT-A or PGT-SR cycles of 677 patients were collected. According to the TE biopsy report, of the 3662 (98%) successfully amplified samples, 24 (0.6%) yielded no results, 849 (23.2%) were euploid, 2245 (61.3%) were aneuploid, and 544 (14.9%) were mosaic. Sixty patients without euploid blastocysts opted for a single mosaic blastocyst transfer, and 30 (50%) of them obtained a clinical pregnancy. With the BE chromosome copy number as the gold standard, niPGT and TE re-biopsy showed reliable detection ability and diagnostic efficiency in eight putative aneuploid blastocysts. Of the 41 putative mosaic blastocysts re-cultured and re-tested, 35 (85.4%) showed euploid BE results. All but two of the blastocysts previously diagnosed with segmental chromosomal mosaic were actually euploid. In addition, all blastocysts previously classified as low degree (20–50%) mosaics were identified as euploid by BE PGT, whereas four of the six putative high degree (50–80%) mosaic blastocysts showed chromosomal abnormalities. The raw concordance rates of spent culture medium (SCM) and TE re-biopsies compared with BE were 74.4% and 82%, respectively, in terms of overall ploidy and 96.2% and 97.6%, respectively, per single chromosome when considering all degree mosaic results as true positives. However, when we set a mosaicism identification threshold of 50%, the concordance rates of SCM and TE re-biopsies compared with BE were 87.2% and 85% at the overall ploidy level and 98.8% and 98.3% at the chromosomal level, respectively. At the full ploidy level, the sensitivity and false negative rates for niPGT were 100% and 0, respectively. After adjustment of the threshold for mosaicism, the specificity of niPGT increased from 69.7% to 84.8% in terms of overall ploidy and from 96.1% to 98.9% at the chromosomal level. LIMITATIONS, REASONS FOR CAUTION The primary limitation of this study is the small sample size, which decreases the strength of our conclusions. If possible, identifying the clinical outcome of niPGT on reassessed mosaic blastocysts would be further progress in this field. WIDER IMPLICATIONS OF THE FINDINGS This study is the first to explore the practicability of niPGT in diagnostic reassessment of putative mosaicism. The present study provides a novel opportunity for patients with only mosaic blastocysts and no euploid blastocysts, regardless of the technical or biological basis of mosaicism. Employing niPGT after 14–18 h of re-culturing might be a superior option for the best use of blastocysts because of its minimally invasive nature. The project presented in this article is to create a completely seamless and cloud-free mosaic of Mexico at a resolution of 5m, using approximately 4,500 RapidEye images. To complete this project in a timely manner and with limited operators, a number of processing architectures were required to handle a data volume of 12 terabytes. This paper will discuss the different operations realized to complete this project, which include, preprocessing, mosaic generation and post mosaic editing. Prior to mosaic generation, it was necessary to filter the 50,000 RapidEye images captured over Mexico between 2011 and 2014 to identify the top candidate images, based on season and cloud cover. Upon selecting the top candidate images, PCI Geomatics’ GXL system was used to reproject, color balance and generate seamlines for the output 1TB+ mosaic. This paper will also discuss innovative techniques used by the GXL for color balancing large volumes of imagery with substantial radiometric differences. Furthermore, post-mosaicking steps, such as, exposure correction, cloud and cloud shadow elimination will be presented.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The generation of photographic mosaics is an important activity in many areas such as map production, environment monitoring and agricultural management. Photogrammetry, and specially aero-photogrammetry, are the sciences that deal, among other subjects, with mosaic generation using time consuming procedures, making the maintenance and updating of photographic mosaics a difficult and high-cost task. The ARARA Project (Autonomous and Radio Assisted Reconaissance Aircrafts), presents a low cost alternative to acquire aerial photographs. An onboard, small format digital camera can take automatically the photographs used for the mosaic generation. This work proposes a methodology for mosaic generation and updating using oblique, digital, small format aerial photographs taken by ARARA aircraft. Photographs can be corrected both geometrically and radiometrically by orthorectification and digital image processing procedures. The methodology presented in this work avoids the use of ground control points, focusing on the automatic and semi-automatic mosaic generation. An automatic procedure make possible the use of a large number of small format photographs to replace the photographs normally used in conventional aerophotogrammetry.

Abstract:
This dissertation aims to understand the influence of the adequacy process between the space originally designed from a project and the space temporally lived from the appropriations in the everyday dynamics of the perceived space. To this end, it was decided to analyze the consolidation history of physical and social space Housing Guajuviras set as the case study of this work. This popular housing was designed and implemented in Canoas/RS between the 1970s and 1980s from the National Housing Bank (BNH) and the Housing Company (COHAB) site and went through a troubled process of appropriation and illegal occupation. Today Guajuviras district experience a series of physical and social contradictions due to the changes and adaptations that led to different regions within the same place. Together these different plots and their everyday configure a space mosaic popularly known as "Guaju" which is addressed here in terms of three complementary moments. First, it analyzes the history of the housing highlighting the origin of the different regions. Then the objective is to map the adequacy process considering the physical adaptations of each region. And lastly, it is intended to grasp the daily routes emphasizing the different borders to be crossed by the residents of each region. After each of the moments, the object of study is deepened due to a reconstruction of the space that is historical, physical and social.

During the last few years, numerous new sequencing technologies have emerged that require tools that can process large amounts of read data quickly and accurately. Regardless of the downstream methods used, reference-guided aligners are at the heart of all next-generation analysis studies. I have developed a general reference-guided aligner, MOSAIK, to support all current sequencing technologies (Roche 454, Illumina, Applied Biosystems SOLiD, Helicos, and Sanger capillary). The calibrated alignment qualities calculated by MOSAIK allow the user to fine-tune the alignment accuracy for a given study. MOSAIK is a highly configurable and easy-to-use suite of alignment tools that is used in hundreds of labs worldwide. MOSAIK is an integral part of our genetic variant discovery pipeline. From SNP and short-INDEL discovery to structural variation discovery, alignment accuracy is an essential requirement and enables our downstream analyses to provide accurate calls. In this thesis, I present three major studies that were formative during the development of MOSAIK and our analysis pipeline. In addition, I present a novel algorithm that identifies mobile element insertions (non-LTR retrotransposons) in the human genome using split-read alignments in MOSAIK. This algorithm has a low false discovery rate (4.4 %) and enabled our group to be the first to determine the number of mobile elements that differentially occur between any two individuals

Abstract:

The writing, composition of this thesis, is made of clippings/fragments of memories in the living presence of an aesthetic experience in teacher training constitutes a mosaic. The links and nodes of a teaching evidenced when the writing of the dissertation research on teaching in southern Brazil-extend to new partnerships with various groups of students through the memories of the project ?Mobilizar-te: acontecimento em arte e educação na UFT- encontros com artefazer-se docente (2008-2010)? in the teaching of higher education in the North of the country. The central focus of this thesis sought to answer the following question: Which aesthetic experiences and memories of (self) formation are narrated by a group of students of Pedagogy (UFT) project participants to mobilize you? In theoretical Benjamin, Larrosa, Contreras and Dewey find grounds for understanding the category experience for the senses of production against the trivialization and bureaucratization of anesthesia and learning from you, backwards, thinking of the craving to own the action form, as a do-teaching full of political, ethical and aesthetic intentions. The aesthetic category is discussed from Welsch studies with Hermann interlocutions, Duarte Junior, Pereira, Farina, among others. The intent of this survey methodological approached qualitative in education practices with the Intersect method (auto) biography on potentiality of memory as a training tool, anchored in authors: Abrahão, Nóvoa, Josso, Dominicé, Passegui, Delory-Momberger and Bolivar and Domingos. As material elements characteristic brackets that were the sources of investigation of this research were used the following elements: interview with 8 academics graduates of the course of Pedagogy; depositions during the period 2008/2010, single notes in notebooks, group reports, photographs and images produced in folders, t-shirts. Among the topics mapped in this study evidencio the cultural diversity and politics at the University, the professor as a producer of material elements characteristic aesthetic, beyond the art party, the (self) formation in action and intervention and formation of the pedagogue with children: the experience of body art. At the turn the corner at the end of a hallway, I conclude that the availabilities in relations of alterity are highlighted as elements of academic concentration in making diverse standards "I must", as well as the understanding of a collective, heated environments, opening in the interconnection of webs/networks to think future protection profession as a producer himself. The curriculum training and act as place of aesthetics, is the leitmotif of a fine line demarcation of frontiers, in which the reflection traverses the need for (UN) dressing a faculty/students. In memory of the experience as a support and evaluation of a make and professional development, find inspiration and vital energies of a ferryman profession that allows a sense of departure and expeditions, in aesthetic challenges of the present: share the production of senses in si training experience with each other, reflect on the presence of no control in teaching practice and how the experience takes submerged dimensions.

Abstract:
a society exposed to the enormous challenges of international mobility, the promotion of a culture of peace, tolerance, intercomprehension and cooperation among people is, unequivocally, the leading path to be followed by our educational communities. It urges, therefore, the peremptory need to provide our students the means and the necessary tools for the acquisition of basic skills conductible to intercultural awareness by providing them with natural learning environments, as a result of diverse cross-cultural encounters, in order to enable them to communicate effectively in foreign languages. eTwinning arises in this context as a strong enhancer / catalyst of culturally meaningful learning, redirecting the role of students and teachers to the (co)learning, opening doors to the adoption of innovative teaching practices, stimulating, thoughtful, meeting the conceptions of constructivist and socioconstructivists models of teaching and learning, and in particular with recourse to the use of digital technologies. This research project focused on the work developed by a team of teachers within this community of European schools and, in particular, based upon its relevance regarding the improvement of communication skills in English as a foreign language within the Portuguese team, which was formed by a large number of 8th grade students from an elementary/ secondary school in the district of Braga, mainly in Barcelos, recurring to project methodology as a support-based promotion of it. The results were extremely positive considering that the project has contributed, unquestionably, to the cultural enrichment of all stakeholders, as a result of the great success achieved concerning the raising of awareness towards the discovery of other cultures/ foreign languages. It is hoped, therefore, that this project can be foreseen as a bridge to future investigations given the vast human and educational richness that it contains.

Abstract:
In this chapter, Pederson and Zimmerman, programmers for the Finger Lakes Environmental Film Festival, a multi-disciplinary, multi-arts, cross-platform festival, examine women’s new feminist media environments, ventures and practices that reject the goal of producing a fixed object such as an analog feature film. Practitioners work within relational and participatory models, with the role of director yielding to that of designer or convener within place-based encounters and workshops. Highlighting intersectional connections between feminism and other issues, these projects range across media platforms as in The Lunch Love Community Project (2010-2014, an online mosaic promoting healthful food in schools) and Children of Srikandi (2012, a collaborative multimedia LBGT project in Indonesia).

Abstract:
Karachi, Pakistan is a mosaic of marginalized communities belonging to diverse ethnicities with distinct yet overlapping histories. Set against a backdrop of gang warfare and extremism, the city’s development sector has endeavoured to channelize the energies of at-risk youth toward educational and creative outlets. This chapter will explore if, and how, theatre projects restricted by specific attitudinal goals of countering violent extremism can organically foster more basic values of deliberative democracy within the logistical and temporal constraints of a donor-supervised project. In a divisive climate of struggling institutional democracy and governance, can a grass-roots theatre practice emerge that inculcates collective goodwill and critical generosity in the community while meeting official goals of countering violent extremism and growing even after the project period ends? Using Stephani Etheridge Woodson’s Community Cultural Development as a guiding theoretical framework, this chapter will explore the possibilities, challenges, roadblocks and opportunities of using Theatre for Youth Third Space, within the parameters of said project, to transcend the goals of Counter Violent Extremism (CVE). The project was carried out with 42 youth groups in six districts of Karachi over a period of eleven months, divided into two 18-week cycles, each culminating in youth-devised Social Action Projects (SAPs) that directly or indirectly address violent extremism.

Abstract:
Recent research has called for the use of enriched measures, that is, psychophysiological measures of emotional and cognitive states, in user experience (UX) testing. This chapter investigates how these enriched measures can inform user experience evaluation while maintaining agility and speed in managing UX projects. Using a multiple case approach, this chapter presents the analysis of 12 recent user experience projects in which enriched measures were used. Lessons learned with regard to challenges encountered are outlined. They emphasize on: (1) the nature of the research question impacts the completion time and the complexity of the project; (2) the need to communicate and coordinate between all parties; (3) the need to anticipate the collected measurements and enhanced results using a mosaic of hybrid collection methods; (4) the nature of the results adapted to underline the operational side without reducing the quality of the work performed; and (5) the time constrains influenced and influencing the pre-tests and project’s granularity. This chapter concludes with lessons learned from an agile/UX development approach in the realization of Sprint projects.

Abstract:
The earliest apocalypses, in the books of Enoch and Daniel, appeal to a source of revelation that is independent of the Mosaic Torah. The sectarian Dead Sea Scrolls, however, combine a fundamental emphasis on the Torah with a claim of higher revelation, which guides the proper interpretation of the Torah. Similarly the apocalypses of the late first century CE, 4 Ezra and 2 Baruch, revere the Torah, but supplement it with apocalyptic visions.
