Abstract:
This paper is one of the outcomes of the PicsAR (Physics Augmented Reality) research project that is focusing on the evaluation of students’ abstract thinking skills while utilizing augmented reality (AR) in the atomic model. The sequence of the research has emerged into three steps: developing, validating, and the evaluation of the PicsAR. The research utilized an ADDIE model: “Analysis-Design-Development-Implementation-Evaluation”. In Spring semester 2019, the authors conducted these steps and resulted in a pocket of PicsAR booklet and AR application based on Android. Then, the trial of application was conducted to 33 students in private high school in Surabaya, Indonesia. Parameters of evaluation included the quality of PicsAR, impact on students abstract thinking skills, and the research outcomes. The results indicated (1) the process of developing AR in atomic model fulfil the criteria of product quality: validity, practicality, and effectiveness, (2) performing of students’ abstract thinking skills reached at least 66.67% in the combination of good and very good categories of all reasoning categories, (3) through PicsAR research project resulted in two prior publications and one property right. The atomic model is one of abstract physics concept representative in presenting the use of augmented reality in physics learning; therefore, the recommendation of this research is another abstract physics concepts should address the use of AR as a media for learning.

Abstract:
Abstract:
AbstractThe paper explores the current state of the university-business cooperation at EU, and national level, and it seems that a more structured university-business cooperation might enable universities to adapt their curricula to meet labor market requirements better. A project was designed to address this issue and received funding on a national merit-based competition. During project implementation, exploratory surveys have conducted, findings-based solutions have adopted in practice with promising results. The paper presents the conceptual framework of the Adapt2jobs project, the main activities, and results and how these converged with the current trend in university-business cooperation. The study limits emerged from the scale of the project implementation, and from the response rate registered at the business cohort. Nevertheless, the paper has a clear, practical value which demonstrates that the university-business cooperation can be efficient in curriculum adaptation to the labor market requirements. The study has a real potential for duplication in a wider context, and a comparative analysis is needed to identify good practices in the field, nationally and internationally.

Abstract:
AbstractGlobal project virtual teams are increasingly common as organizations strive to maintain a global presence, find top and diverse talent, and cope with economic constraints. They include members from multiple nations and cultures who must work together while being separated by time and space. An internal research, which has been conducted in an international company active in the industrial sector of financial services, provides few insights into how integrating the Western values of individualism and low power distance with the Eastern values of collectivism and high power distance may influence cross-cultural conflict management. The purpose of this paper is to directly examine the impact of organization-level collectivism and individualism as well as high and low power distance – in case of global project teams that include Romanian and Indian experts – in order to determine the interactive effects of these factors on cross-cultural conflict management. The authors sustain the idea that understanding intercultural dynamics can facilitate collaboration and reduce conflicts in intercultural encounters at the individual, organization, and probably societal levels. Methodological approach is to use both secondary literature survey and primary research methods as interviews and short case-examples from authors’ direct consulting experience while working with global project teams. This pilot study – as part of a larger research project – contributes to fill one gap in the understanding of culturally heterogeneous project teams and is the starting-point for additional investigation in this area.

Abstract:
Abstract Tourism is one of the areas which is constantly making progress. While 10 years ago tourists enjoyed a holiday by the sea in a beautiful resort with even more beautiful weather and clean beach, eventually winter holiday in the ski resort with regularly adjusted slope, enough snow and comfortable accommodation, today it is different. Based on a survey among the clients of the Slovak travel agency it was found out that the clients are interested in the trip involving the climb on the Matterhorn mountain which has not been offered in the proposition yet. Travel agency together with the specialized academic workplace processed the trip project for more demanding clientele to this less common destination, this means on Matterhorn mountain, accompanied by the mountain guides. This way the travel agency gained a competitive advantage because no other Slovak travel agency organizes a tour of this type. It has to be considered the safety of the participants of the trip and wind conditions in the final destination. The profit margin was established at 45%. Under the term „ demanding clientele” we mean the clients who do not long for a stay at the seaside but on the contrary they love to increase adrenaline and are not afraid to test their abilities in extreme situations. There is a competition not only among the individual travel agencies but due to access to information via the Internet there are more and more tourists who are able to arrange a demanding sightseeing trip to various countries themselves. The special exception is mountain tourism and climbing which is demanding for the accompanying services – providing mounting guides, transport of the backpacks in hilly terrain. Climbing is the risky sport, it is necessary to have a secure professional accompaniment.

Abstract:
Abstract The context of public governance outsourcing social services and constantly downshifting its role creates the premises for increasing impact of crowdsourced social entrepreneurship and grassroots mobilization. The study envisions the innovative concept of social entrepreneurship by crowdfunding through a sports event, with Swimathon as study case, where most of Romanian NGOs are active to promote their calls for fundraising. Swimmer-participants are fundraisers who take on a challenge (e.g. swimming a target distance) with the aim to raise funds, in teams, for the causes they support. This fundraising event involves donors in a participative setting that combines short-term volunteering and crowdfunding. The research aims to understand practices by which crowdfunding projects grouped into categories navigate constructs on time. The ensuing research questions are as follows: What typology of time orientation do crowdfunding projects in the Romanian landscape of sports-oriented social entrepreneurship display? What do they shift, reshape, and build on in terms of time agency, time management and time empowerment? The current study seeks to uncover and chart patterns of time-bound discursive strategies that aim to attract donors for crowdfunding projects in Romania. It brings forth questions of power and influence, by explaining and synthesizing the variety of manners in which trade-offs and synergies and modelled and mapped. The thematic analysis of fundraising calls for action is structured two-fold, namely: the denotative and the connotative dimension of time. The first component reveals time agency, time use and time management as keynote discursive trends, whereas the second reveals the following categories: time and emotion, quality time and time pressure. Metaphors of time used in the discourse over sustainability appeared coupled with pressure to intervene fast. Findings gathered by connotative discourse analysis induce the idea of grassroots mobilization and individual agency to the forefront, whereas social structures of institutional support are afforded background importance. The study ends with a discussion on implications of using time cues for emerging trends in the build-up process of Romanian crowdfunding projects.

Abstract The body of knowledge related to the impact of IT on project management (PM) acknowledges the driving and restraining forces for PM software implementation. However, the peculiarities of such kind of approach have received little research attention at the level of Romanian public institutions. This paper addresses this research gap in the attempt to outline how PM software becomes the key enabler of solution to level the resources involved in multiple projects managed in the same time by a public institution from higher education system. The methodological approach involves a case study, which highlight the value of IT support in the process of identifying and leveling the overallocated resources within multiple project management.

Abstract:
In recent years, the problem of information integration has received a lot of attention. In particular, several information integration systems have been based on a mediator architecture which provides a uniform query interface to multiple and possibly heterogeneous data sources which enables users to focus on specifying their demand, by freeing them from having to find the relevant sources and possibly combine data from multiple sources to obtain answers. In the setting of data integration systems, the need for a cooperative query answering process is especially crucial because users do not know the contents of the data sources that are available. In particular, it may happen that the user's query has no answer because it violates the domain or its translation leads to specialised query plans that violate the constraints specifying the actual contents of the sources. In this case, it is important to explain to the user why his query failed and to propose close queries that can have answers. In this thesis we take a logical framework for representing the domain model and the source description, associated with inference algorithms. First we characterise the minimal causes of the absence of any answer. Second we build a set of repairs, such that each repair has a common generalisation with the initial query or we generate predefined queries, starting from the sources description and we present a method to calculate similarity between two predicates and then between two queries

Abstract:
Trabalho de projeto de mestrado, Segurança Informática, Universidade de Lisboa, Faculdade de Ciências, 2020
Critical infrastructures such as electric power grids, nuclear plants, oil and gas refineries, transportations systems or pharmaceutical industries, play an increasingly important role in our lives due to technological advancement and the precision industry. Traditionally, most of these infrastructures, also called industrial control systems (ICS), are large-scale cyber-physical systems (CPS) which all use supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA). Over recent years, malicious actors have realized the importance and impact of these infrastructures. Combining this with the deprivation of security features in ICS resulted in a large quantity of high value targets just waiting to be exploited. Since these systems are based on equipment with a really long lifetime and, in most of the cases, have an extremely high availability requirement, its important to, somehow, gather information and perform security tests in order to protect these infrastructures, without compromising a live operation. Normally these infrastructures are very complex and often have a remarkable diversity of equipment, communication protocols and transmission technologies. This thesis presents a portable testbed, PICSEL, which was designed and developed to achieve the following goals: to be a portable testbed testing existing exploits and new security solutions whilst exploring new vulnerabilities within the equipment or the environment. Several requirements were considered in the design of the testbed: for instance, choosing the equipment that allowed for more environment configurations; choosing power supplies that support additional equipment; and designing a static electrical diagram based on each device’s requirements. With these requirements, the testbed must be able to support different types of equipment and architectures, allowing for applications in multiple industries, inside which it can be easily reconfigured. The thesis describes the testbed architecture and discusses the design decisions, presenting two test scenarios that were studied and implemented using PICSEL. In each of these test scenarios, different attacks were performed validating each of the PICSEL goals. Testing known vulnerabilities, testing exploits in the wild and exporting information from PICSEL equipment to an external tool were very important steps to validate the results. Therefore, this thesis provides proof of concept confirming the key value of a modular and reconfigurable testbed, PICSEL.

Abstract:

We followed up with about 2,000 smallholder households in Senegal, two years after these households participated in a randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed at reducing levels of aflatoxins in smallholders’ stored maize. In the initial intervention, treated households were provided with training on proper post-harvest practices, low-cost moisture meters for testing if maize was sufficiently dry to store, plastic tarps for drying maize of the ground, and hermetic (airtight) storage bags to mitigate aflatoxin development in stored maize. Using cross-sectional follow up data on aflatoxins levels and drying and storage practices from 2019 along with baseline demographic data from 2016, we estimate both the longer-term intention-to-treat (ITT) effects and the treatment on the treated (TOT) effects that the four inputs provided on households’ aflatoxins levels in stored maize. The ITT analyses estimate the intervention’s average effect by treatment group, but this may underestimate the true impact for households who complied with recommended post-harvest practices and adopted the recommended technologies. The TOT analyses estimate the local average treatment effects (LATE) of the intervention, that is its impacts on those who were driven by the intervention to follow best practices or use a given technology. Since the decision to follow these practices or adopt a technology was not random, we instrumented the usage decision with the exogenous, random treatment group assignment to get an unbiased estimate. Outside of our main models, we conducted a heterogeneity analysis to test if households with different characteristics benefit differently from the intervention. We interacted each treatment assignment with various household characteristics, including the woman’s level of involvement in the intervention. Additionally, we estimate the cost-effectiveness of providing training and a tarp, according to WHO guidelines for public health interventions.

Ridley Scott sets out to make his first feature film. First selected is the 1605 Gunpowder Plot, for which he collaborated on a screenplay, but he couldn’t get funding. Then he was interested on a film of the American nineteenth-century paleontologist “Indian” Capwell but was told by Hollywood it was too intellectual. He turned next to two other projects, Castle Accident for the Bee Gees and Ronnie and Leo but couldn’t find funding for either. Scott turned to Joseph Conrad’s story “The Duel.” Producer David Puttnam was interested and the project, The Duellists, was sold to David Picker at Paramount. The production was low budget and an arduous shoot. The film deals with men’s obsession with battle and featured handsome production values, putting Ridley Scott on the map as a film director.

Abstract:
When the First World War ended, the landscape had been transformed into a wasteland. Later, the population faced the challenge of rebuilding the region. Many traces of the war were then wiped out. Everywhere, the archaeological remains are slumbering in the soil, barely 30 cm deep and invisible to the visitors. It took a while before the remains of the war have been considered as archaeological heritage. It was not until 2002-2004 that professional archaeologists in Belgium began to show an interest in this special heritage. Since then, the importance of this archaeology has only increased and today it is part of mainstream archaeological research. Several initiatives built on the successful first commemorative year 2014 in Belgium, with record numbers of visitors in the Westhoek. During the commemorations, various archaeological projects were put in the spotlight and were picked up with great interest from the public. This chapter highlights a series of high-profile initiatives that shaped specific parts of the remembrance of the First World War in Belgium.

Abstract:
Wireless sensor networks consist of many tiny sensor nodes deployed at a high density over region, requiring surveillance and monitoring. The sensor nodes typically consist of one or more sensing elements, battery, low powered radio transmitter/receiver, microprocessor, and limited memory. Sensor networks deployed in a hostile environment are prone to malicious attacks like eavesdropping, masquerading, traffic analysis, et cetera. Hence, security is more important in sensor networks than in traditional networks. An important challenge in sensor network security is the design of effective bootstrapping protocols for the nodes, which are pre-initialized with some secret information and have had no prior direct contact with each other. Each node has a set of keys, called a key chain, rather than a single shared key. The keys in the key chain are picked randomly from a key pool. Two neighboring nodes either share a common key or should be able to establish a key path such that every pair in the path shares a key. One problem in such a solution is to select a proper key chain so that the network remains connected with a high probability.

Vengeance. Payback. Retribution. Just deserts. Evening up the score. Punishment. If there is an ever-replicating and recurring Internet meme, it is one of revenge. Intimate photos are shared online post-relationship and end up picked up by for-profit pornographic websites. Privy information is leaked into private (narrow-cast) or semi-public or public spaces (broadcast) with massive amplifications of messages into the public sphere. Violent attacks and beat-downs are videotaped and shared on video sharing sites. Flash or cyber mobs are brought together to clean-out stores and to exact vengeance on particular businesses. Information and Communication Technology (ICT), with its nexus of pseudo-anonymity, fast dissemination of information, long-term persistence of data, and mass reach, provides multiple affordances for the exacting of vengeance. The popular culture of anonymous hacktivism and cyber-vigilantism further contribute to the sense of the Internet as an ungoverned and extralegal place. Finally, a general imprudence has meant the easy activation of Internet mobs and individuals to harm-causing rumor-sharing and behavior against others—sparked by doubtful claims or loose storytelling. ICT has enabled the spillover of real-world antipathies and dark emotions into virtual spaces, which then slosh back into the real world. This chapter examines the research in the area of vengeance and how such very human impetuses manifest online. Further, this chapter examines the design features of various ICT platforms and socio-technical spaces that may support vengeance-based communications and actions and proposes ways to mitigate some of these dark affordances.

Abstract:
The power of catalytic C-H functionalization is illustrated by the elegant synthesis of rhazinicine 3 devised (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2008, 47, 3004) by Matthew J. Gaunt of the University of Cambridge. The key step in the synthesis was the oxidative cyclization of 1 to 2. Although 1 has many C-H sites, the Pd catalyst selected for the α position of the pyrrole, leading, after intramolecular Heck addition and β-hydride elimination, to the alkene 2. Reduction and macrolactamization completed the synthesis of 3. Hongbin Zhai of the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry and Zhong Li of East China University of Science and Technology prepared (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 2457) the analgesic (-)-9- epi -pentazocine 8 from the amino ester 4, itself available from D-tyrosine. In the conversion of 5 to 6, the (i -PrO)2 Ti formed a ring, leading to 6 as a single diastereomer and geometric isomer. HBr then effected both deprotection of the methyl ether and cyclization, to give 7, which was carried on to 8. The Pt-catalyzed cyclization of 9 to 10 set the stage for the synthesis of ( + )-fawcettidine 15 by Gregory R. Dake of the University of British Columbia (Angew. Chem. Int. Ed. 2008, 47, 4221). This synthesis also illustrated the power of the Ramberg-Bäcklund reaction for the assembly of medium rings. The thiolate liberated from 12 readily added to the enone, to give 13. Oxidation to the sulfone followed by the Ramberg-Bäcklund reaction (halogenation, intramolecular displacement, chelotropic elimination of SO2 ) then delivered 14, which was selectively reduced, leading to 15. Albert Padwa of Emory University has developed (J. Org. Chem. 2008, 73, 3539) a general route to the Strychnos alkaloids, based on the facile cyclization of the furan 16 to the tetracyclic ketone 17. This project culminated in the synthesis of the heptacyclic strychnine 20. Eric N. Jacobsen of Harvard University has devised a family of catalysts for the enantioselective Pictet-Spengler reaction of tryptamine 21. He has now (Organic Lett. 2008, 10, 745) used this approach to prepare the triene 22 in 94 % ee.

Abstract:
The process of restoration of the Shack lands did not end with Dad’s passing. Quite the contrary. It was picked up by several of his children and by some key neighbors and Wisconsin-based foundations, and ultimately by the Leopold Foundation staff, which continued by expanding the prairies. In this regard, some special recognition is due my sister Nina and her second husband, Charles Bradley, for their initial work developing new prairie areas in Sauk County. Their methods in building a prairie were novel additions to the work/technology that Aldo Leopold and John Curtis had started at the UW Arboretum in Madison. During the years 1940–1948, Dad continued to purchase more acres, so that by 1948 our holdings were about 350 acres in Fairfield Township, Sauk County. These acres were all contiguous with the original Shack lands. Nearby, Mother and Dad’s friends the Thomas Coleman family had over the years enjoyed the log cabin they had built on their land high above Lake Chapman overlooking the great marsh and floodplain. Reed Coleman, the younger son of Tom Coleman, with conservation in mind, in time wanted to expand the land holdings his father had purchased on the south side of the river road across from Lake Chapman. Reed and his colleague and friend Howard Mead laid a plan for the L. R. Head Foundation to gradually purchase nearby parcels of land as they became available from retiring farmers. The Head Foundation was able to compile a huge protected reserve surrounding the 350 or so acres that Dad had bought. It was a creative effort to protect the land of the region from being degraded by home developers and the like. Over the years from 1950 to the 1970s the Head Foundation succeeded in building what is now called the Aldo Leopold Memorial Reserve. This expansive project served indeed to stave off local development. Reed said that his effort was inspired by witnessing the subdividing of the old Gilbert farm along the river into slices of land for summer homes, and he did not want this to happen around either the Shack or the original Coleman land area.

Abstract:
On their own, photos and videos are not a reliable source of information about what is taking place in a school. It’s easy to react emotionally or with outrage to a video of a fight, a child being picked on, or some other display of abuse or wrongdoing. But everyone knows from highly publicized incidents posted on YouTube, Twitter, or other social media sites that photos and videos can be taken out of context. They tell a story, but they don’t tell the whole story. Even so, they can be used by administrators to discern whether the action shown in the photo or video is an isolated incident or could be a symptom of a larger problem. If an alarming photo or video taken at a school is receiving attention from the media, it’s better to talk about it with the school community as soon as possible than to pretend it didn’t happen. Situations like these create an opportunity to examine and share other sources of data about school safety, violence, and victimization. Too often, one incident can cause the public to draw conclusions about a school that are not accurate. That’s why a monitoring system is necessary— to put such an incident in context. Administrators who can refer to other sources of data regarding violence, drug use, or weapons can respond with more confidence when faced with criticism over one incident. As part of a monitoring system, photos, videos and other technology can be used for positive purposes. They allow students who might skip questions on a survey or don’t want to speak up during a focus group to express themselves in a different way. There are many examples of projects in which students are given cameras and microphones and encouraged to express themselves and present their experiences in school through this media. In addition to the individual students benefitting from such experiences, school leaders, staff members, and parents get the opportunity to see the school from the students’ perspectives.
