Steiner (2007).

Isaac Newton (1642-1727) devoted ample time to the study of ancient chronology, resulting in the posthumously published The Chronology of Ancient Kingdoms Amended (1728). Here, Newton attempted to show how the antiquity of Greece, Egypt, Assyria, Persia, and other Mediterranean nations could be reinterpreted to fit the timespan allowed for by Scripture. Yet as the hundreds of books from his library and the thousands of manuscript pages devoted to the topic show, the Chronology was long in the making. Abstract:
This chapter discusses Newton's collaborative chymical project with Nicolas Fatio de Duillier in 1693. By examining Fatio's hitherto unstudied letter to Newton from the summer of 1693 in conjunction with Newton's manuscript “Three Mysterious Fires”, the chapter shows that the latter text represents the fruit of an elaborate set of procedures devised by Newton in conjunction with Fatio. These processes were related to another set of operations from Newton that Fatio recapitulates in the aforementioned 1693 letter. The procedures that Fatio quotes from Newton provide an important key for understanding both Keynes 58 and the laboratory notebooks. In a word, they are simplified procedures for making such important desiderata as the caduceus of Mercury and the scythe of Saturn, Decknamen that arise in the records of Newton's experimentation and reading notes.

Abstract:
This chapter offers a new take on the history of science by detailing how the turn from Scholasticism in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries took the form of a gradual turn to system as the “firmer” form of what the physicist, and Enlightenment scholar, David Deutsch calls “guesswork.” That turn was completed in grand fashion with Newton’s decision to communicate his principles and laws philosophically by adding a “System of the World” to his treatise. I explain how and why Newton came very close—repeatedly—to sending the Principia into the world without any “System” at all. Why was system such a vexed issue in the late seventeenth century? What was at stake for Newton in choosing to write a system over competitors such as “hypothesis”? And why, once it did make it onto the printed page, did system become so successful that a copy of Newton’s system was launched into space as one of humanity’s calling cards three centuries later? How did that particular form of knowledge come to represent—for Condillac, Goldsmith, Hume, Pownall, Granger—our species’ good and bad efforts to advance knowledge? The primary generic marker of what came to be called Enlightenment, I conclude, were the monumental efforts—highlighted by Adam Smith’s project for Scotland—to scale up systems into master SYSTEMs that persisted from roughly the 1730s through the 1780s.

Abstract:
This chapter considers Isaac Newton’s conceptualization of the origins of monarchies. In 1702, Newton penned the “Original of Monarchies” following the death of William III. At the heart of the new project was the question of whether large empires had existed prior to the four monarchies mentioned by Daniel, namely Babylon, Persia, Greece, and Rome. If not, and Newton believed this to be the case, how to account for the seemingly well-documented counter examples of ancient empires, namely Egypt and Assyria? According to Newton’s theory, population growth during the early, postdiluvian era led to the rise of towns inhabited by multiple families. Coexistence of many families, in turn, required governance, and so the “fathers of families” united to produce a common set of laws, eventually choosing a “judge” to adjudicate among the families on the basis of such agreed-upon laws. These governed towns later morphed into larger units, “cities,” which were administered by councils of “elders.” Villages arose in the vicinities of the cities, and the authority of the judges extended to them, thereby producing the first conurbation that could be termed a “kingdom.” Over time these cities expanded further still, either by joining together under a common “captain,” or through conquest, to form an empire.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses Newton's attempt to purify his antimonial sublimate of copper vitriol from excess antimony and sal ammoniac to obtain a material that he calls “our Venus.” The project of “extracting our Venus” can be tracked from its origins up until February 1695/6, the last date in CU Add. 3973. It is possible that Newton's goal was to arrive not merely at a salt of copper in the modern sense, where the metal combines with other elements to yield a compound, but rather in the traditional alchemical sense whereby the copper is decomposed and its internal, constituent salt is released. Whether “our Venus” meant an internal constituent of the metal copper, or rather a compound of the metal, Newton spent years of effort trying to arrive at the substance in pure form.

Abstract:
Governments and international organisations have expressed concern regarding what has been labeled the digital divide, that is, the gap between those people who have access to, and the ability to use, modern information technologies—such as computers, the Internet, e-mail, and other mobile technologies, often referred to as information communication technologies (ICTs)—and those who do not. As a result a range of measures have been put in place by public agencies in an attempt to reduce the inequities between the “haves” and the “have nots”. One strategy which has commonly been used is the establishment of free and easy access to computing and Internet facilities within communities identified as needing such assistance. In Wellington, New Zealand, a project called Smart Newtown has been implemented whereby free public access to computers and the Internet and free introductory classes are made available to all citizens. The researchers were employed to evaluate the implementation and sustainability of this project and this chapter discusses how, over a period of three years, the participation of women has changed. The questions asked were “How did the women benefit from their attendance?” and “What caused this change in participation?” The article begins with a brief background on gender and ICTs, followed by a short review of the literature regarding the digital divide and community computing. One of the successful computing centers in the Smart Newtown project is then examined from a gender viewpoint.

Abstract:
Cloud and IoT technologies have the potential to enable a plethora of new applications that are not strictly limited to remote sensing, data collection, and data analysis. In such a context, the IoT paradigm can be seen as an empowering technology rather than a disruptive one since it has the capability to improve the standard business processes by fostering more efficient and sustainable implementations and by reducing the running costs. Cloud and IoT technologies can be applied in a broad range of contexts including entertainment, industry, and education, among others. This chapter presents part of the outputs of the NEWTON H2020 European project on technology-enhanced learning; more specifically, it introduces the concept of fabrication as a service in the context of educational digital fabrication laboratories. Fab Labs can leverage cloud and IoT technologies to enable resource sharing and provide remote access to distributed expensive fabrication resources over the internet. Both platform architecture and impact on learning experience of STEM subjects are presented in detail.

Abstract:
To date, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) codes aimed at solving practical engineering problems involving chemically reacting flow have incorporated relatively simple descriptions of the chemical mechanisms involved. Techniques are now available to create reduced mechanisms that faithfully represent detailed chemical descriptions over an appropriate range of conditions using many fewer species. However, including reduced mechanisms into a CFD analysis typically leads to numerical difficulties. In a recent project, a new modeling tool was created that utilizes a combination of state-of-the-ar

Abstract:
Abstract Accurate prediction of geomechanical rock properties is one of the main challenges to be overcome in E&P projects, in order to optimize well completion design and stimulation strategy. This is especially so in the early stages of a project, e.g the appraisal phase. In the recent years, Scratch Testing has become an emerging geomechanical characterization technique that is used to determine the mechanical properties of the rock. With this method, a groove of fixed depth (typically less than 1 mm) is scratched on the rock surface. The forces acting on the cutter are recorded at a hi

Abstract:
Medical treatment and care for preterm and sick newborn babies in European countries varies greatly. Significant differences are not only limited to the survival rates of such infants. In some European countries, preterm birth is also more commonly associated with chronic physical and mental disability than in others. This effect is exacerbated by the fact that in some parts of Europe, further assistance to these vulnerable children after discharge from the hospital (follow-up and early intervention) is not structured or even does not exist at all. Given the high level of inequality in health
