Abstract:

Abstract:
Research aim: Playgrounds were historically designed only for children, today we can observe new concept of recreation sites, aimed for all ages. Traditional playground was furniture with kids’ equipment, while universal playgrounds have also facilities for adults. These facilities enable families to play together. Research methods: Research project ds-300 AWF was a continuation of the ds-114 AWF – the MNiSW grant. Using the field survey with participant observations, structured and semi-structured interviews methods, factors determining the ‘inclusive urban playground’ for three generations were identified. Research results: To achieve the open access to the universally designed, inclusive playgrounds for all ages, basic components should be included: physical accessibility, age and developmental appropriateness, physical, social and sensory-stimulating components. Conclusions: Results show that exciting, engaging and challenging sport and recreation housing green areas are important to encourage physical activities for all age and enhance social, mental and physical skills of the three generations.

Abstract:
This article takes as its starting point a recognition of play as meaning-making, and the playground as a rich and dynamic ‘meaning-makerspace’ where children draw moment-to-moment, rapidly and readily on the multiple resources available to them to make signs of their interest evident. These resources are drawn from their own lifeworlds, folkloric and site-specific imagination, transmitted game forms from the past, and their pleasure and affective response to contemporary media. The playground is, therefore, a dynamic site for making and re-making, reflecting the concept of ‘makerspace as mindset’, where creative, collaborative meaning-making occurs ceaselessly in a range of modes. To illustrate this position, we share findings from ‘Playing the Archive’, an ‘Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council’ funded project exploring archives, spaces and technologies of play. Building upon the Iona and Peter Opie Archive of play from the 1950s–1960s, the project involved ethnographic research in two contemporary London primary school playgrounds, working with children aged 7–11 as co-researchers. A range of multimodal methods were used with the children to gain insights into their play, including iPads as filmmaking devices, chest-mounted GoPro cameras, voice recorders, drawings and mapping of playspaces. The research highlights that contemporary play exists not only in physical playgrounds, but increasingly in globalised ‘virtual playgrounds’ such as video games and social media. While these playworlds may at first appear separate, we identified ways in which virtual play intersects and inflects activity in the physical playground. We argue that play should therefore be seen as a series of ‘laminates’ drawing variously on media culture, folklore and the children’s everyday lived experiences, re-mixed and re-mediated inventively in the playground.

Abstract:
PLAYGROUPS BEGAN IN AUSTRALIA in the early 1970s, at the same time as significant changes in early childhood education and care (ECEC) began taking place. This paper explores how early playgroups were positioned in the ECEC policy, and the experiences of playgroup organisers in New South Wales. Methods used were documentary analysis of Project Care (Social Welfare Commission, 1974) and interviews with key players. Findings were that playgroups grew rapidly in response to grassroots demand from mothers wanting their children to learn through quality play, besides the demand for adult social support. Since Project Care was strongly influenced by feminist lobbying and the objective of enabling women to engage in paid work—and playgroups relied on mothers to deliver the service—playgroups were an uneasy fit in the ECEC policy. Although Project Care integrated playgroups into its recommendations for ECEC services, subsequent funding was at a low level. Today, ECEC services would benefit from a strengthening of the community playgroups model.

Abstract:
This article draws on data from a project on children’s playground games and rhymes in the new media age. One objective of the project was to examine the relationship between traditional playground games and children’s media cultures. As part of the project, two ethnographic studies of primary playgrounds took place in two schools, one in the north and one in the south of England, over a two-year period. Children in both schools were active participants in the research process. They informed the research design and ongoing data collection through children’s panels and children were involved in data collection through the use of video cameras, interviews and diaries. This article reflects on a number of critical issues that are raised when considering the nature of the cultural knowledge constructed by the children as they identify the signifying practices of their play and its relationship with media culture. The concept of knowledge brokering is used as a heuristic device to analyse the nature of children’s contribution in participatory research studies.

Abstract:
The X State University Community Playground Project (XSUCPP) employs community-based design techniques in which college students in biological engineering work with local constituents, especially children, to design and build playgrounds that reflect the unique aspects of the community which the playground will serve. In developing a community-based design process, members of XSUCPP realized that there is a dearth of literature in this area. Therefore, members sought to develop an initial set of community-based design principles and best practices that engineering practitioners could use in their own community-based design endeavors. The team completed brainstorming and concept mapping exercises using a combination of individual and group techniques to create an initial set of community-based design principles, presented here. The XSUCPP members believe that each of these principles supports the overall goal of community-based design: to express “the Soul of the Community” through co-created artifacts.

Abstract:
This research paper aims to see to what extent a project of revitalization of playgrounds contributes to improving coexistence, conflict resolution, and the participation of boys and girls in sport and physical activities. The paper also aims to know the level of motivation and interest the project could have for the students. For this, after initial assessment, a project of revitalization of recreations was designed, and after a few days of training, it was implemented for a month in a primary school in Spain, with 179 students (98 boys and 81 girls) from 1 to 6 grades; it was carried out in the school playground during a 30-minute recess period. The project consisted of two phases of training; the first one explained different games through training days; the second phase featured free recreation and independent work. The project opted for a mixed methodology of collecting information; this methodology included an information questionnaire and participant observation. The study concludes by highlighting the students’ high interest and motivation, the increasing participation, both boys and girls in physical and sports activities, and the reduction of conflicts between students of the center.

Abstract:
In recent years worldwide interest has arisen in developing “child-friendly cities”, but research into this issue has so far not being carried out in Poland. Over the past decades one can observe a visible change which has taken place in the relationship between children and their living environment. In the many Polish cities (like in all industrialized countries) increased road traffic, pollution and crime, fragmentation of urban fabric, reduction of green public areas – resulted in rather ‘non child friendly’ environment. Although a child can play anywhere, carefully planned playgrounds are widely considered as an essential part of children's leisure and education. Today in Warsaw playgrounds could be found in a variety of settings as housing estates, recreation public areas, urban parks, schools, churches, community centres and commercial establishments as restaurants and hotels. But one can notice that demand for outdoor recreation shows signs of stopping, despite the efforts to supply much more sophisticated equipment. The aim of our research was to seek an answer for question how could we create an environment that meets a child's needs? Which factors determine child-friendly environment? In the course of our research project selected children's playgrounds in Warsaw were surveyed, undertaken on specific themes, such as: facilities, safety, pressures for change, popularity of sites, proposed strategy of renewal (with playground users interviewed). We were interested both in the children and their caregivers diversifying preferences, their expectations of outdoor recreation infrastructure and management improvements. As at present in Warsaw live as much as 5 528 disabled children therefore emphasis has been also placed on disabled children, their everyday access possibilities to public play space.

Abstract:
There is sparse research on playgroups for fathers, therefore, the benefits of such programmes are difficult to discern. However, there is much research on the positive developmental outcomes children experience with involved fathers (Appl, Brown, & Stone, 2008; Evans, Harrison, Rempel, & Slater, 2006; Green, 2003; Rosenberg & Wilcox, 2006). This research focused on a Dad's playgroup run as part of the Communities for Children Logan Project in south-east Queensland, Australia. The research found that the fathers gained positive results as being a part of the playgroup, including improved family functioning, a feeling of belonging to a community in which advice was freely available, improved relationships with their child/children and feelings that this programme met the unique needs of fathers when others in the community have not. These needs were met through the play environment, scheduling, staffing and support networks.

Abstract:
This dissertation, which inhabits the space between Design and Architecture, presents a research on interactive spaces for children, focusing on multidisciplinary and experimental approaches to play. Those spaces are implemented in outdoors urban areas of public access built by the institutional or public sectors, from the first half of the twentieth century up to the present day, in Brazil and other countries. This work starts off with the establishment of key concepts: the child, in light of integral development and its languages; the space; interaction and play. In addition to those definitions, there are reflections on quality as a concept for the development and implementation of those projects; human sensorial capabilities, according to architect Victor Papanek, and the child in the present society. After the contextualization of those spaces in the city, we present a compilation of selected project, organized according to chronology, location and authors. With a qualitative exploratory research method and case studies, this work is organized in topics: context, trajectory, concepts and projects involved; it presents experimental and creative approaches, in conceptions that sought out new solutions and moved beyond the pre-established and conventional standards. After systematizing and analysis, we present conclusions and considerations with the aim of offering theoretical subsidies for researchers and professionals in adjacent areas for the development of new projects. By identifying approximations between play and innovation, we investigate this concept and enhance it with a reflection about complexity and the abilities that are necessary for the present times, according to Edgar Morin. We wrap up the work with a set of proposals in the fields of Architecture, Design and the Arts uniting the concepts of innovation, play and space, in experimental, creative and multidisciplinary approaches. Thus, we discuss other possible models of relationship with the surroundings and with the elements of nature. It is an invitation to reconnect with human sensorial capabilities and a path toward the development of necessary knowledge, as listed in Seven complex lessons in education for the future, by Edgar Morin: \"Detecting error and illusion; Principles of pertinent knowledge; Teaching the human condition; Earth identity; Confronting uncertainties; Understanding each other; Ethics for the human genre\".

Abstract:
Playing is the dominant activity in children's daily life, but is the playground still the place where children have their first encounter with societal roles, norms and values of today’s society, through the act of playing? The playground functions as the place where children are forced to educate themselves, in learning to develop, to make decisions, to solve problems, and to regulate emotions. They look for risks in order to test and explore their physical limits. In this research, I will be focusing on the existing playground in the street of my childhood home aiming to gain understanding as to whether or not the playground still fits the needs of children. Is there still space to discover the basic guidelines of social behaviour and finding out one's personal limits? Looking at today’s playground, I see an over-designed, completely protected, safe-in-the-grid play area which leaves no space for one’s own interpretation and imagination and is not at all a suitable space for testing out your own limits. The play objects are already placed in a concrete form and can only be used in one specific way, eliminating any space for personal initiative. I am curious about how these playground designs arose, and whether there is any kind of communication with children about their needs and desires in the context of play. Which parties decide where and how playgrounds are built in the urban landscape, and why playgrounds are not connected with their urban surroundings, but instead form separated and isolated entities. This detached space often does not meet the demands of the children, resulting in them abandoning the designated playing area, and finding play areas of their own, including streets and abandoned buildings or wastelands, sometimes close to traffic, where they chose to play instead. Making the playground as safe as possible by placing the different kind of play equipment behind a fence is actually resulting in its opposite safety in that the children are looking for a different kind of place to play freely. Aiming to answer these questions, I studied the work of Aldo van Eyck and Bruno Munari, both architects who worked on playgrounds and used primary shapes in urban architecture. I am also focussing on the work of Mariana Brussoni, who writes about the importance of the element of risk in playing, and how this affects a child’s development and social behaviour. For this research, I am working closely together with the municipality and NIJHA Playground Equipment Factory to get a better understanding of the origins of playgrounds. Adding to this research, I conducted many conversations with children from different cities and neighbourhoods, with the aim to find out what the perfect play area is for children and how that fits in the urban landscape, or more specifically, in my own street.

Abstract:
The aim of this paper is to create guidelines which help in the development of projects for accessible infant playgrounds to handicapped children. Abstract:
Playgrounds in Hong Kong have been boring to children, as elements of risk and fun have been removed for parents' concern for safety. The government resorted to homogenous plastic play facilities to extinguish any liability and complaints. While adults wanted to play safe, children's opportunities for balanced physical, sensory, and social development diminished. A play consultant organization, Playright, came forward with social design initiatives that brought all the stakeholders—government departments, professionals, schools, and families—together to reach a common goal—better playgrounds. The Children's Playground Design Workshops and Junior Playground Commissioner Incubation Programme, in which children participated as the designer, allowed their ideas to inform the actual design of the pilot project at Tuen Mun Park Playground, which is due to complete by the end of 2017 by the Architectural Services Department. The aim of this chapter is to document and discuss how the co-designing of all the stakeholders, especially children, could make social change together.

Abstract:
Using the example of the town of Labin in Istria, I demonstrate how isolation, the so-called periphery, can also serve as an expression of resistance in a cultural niche. The collective Labin Art Express (L.A.E., initiated by Dean Zahtila, late Krešimir Farkaš, Graziano Kršić) is the initiator of the fundamental L.A.E. project Underground City XXI ‒ independent underground Labin cultural city as an alternative to the existing above-ground, heteronomous Labin, i.e. the creation of a real city 150 m below the earth’s surface ‒ in underground halls and tunnels, carved in solid rock, connecting Labin, Raša, Plomin and Rabac, with streets, bars, galleries, swimming pools, playgrounds for children, shops, restaurants, the Museum of Mining and Industry of Istria. Thereby we can compare Labin in terms of urbanity and anthropology with the town of Katowice, which in 2018 was selected to host the most significant UN Climate Change Conference, following the 2015 Paris Agreement. Katowice were chosen as one of Europe’s most polluted sites due to the exploitation of coal i.e. the transition of the aforementioned town from a mining and industrial site to a modern industrial, economical, technological and cultural centre.

Abstract:
It is important to introduce ideas and practices to encourage young children to act sustainably so that this becomes habitual and continues in adulthood. An examination of global developments for environmental action provides a context for a more specific focus on work in early years contexts, which, it is noted, most commonly originates in Australia and Scandinavia. The UK is active but lagging behind their lead, relying on pockets of activity in certain university and nursery centres. Noting, also, a need to train staff to teach young children sustainable behaviours, how this can be done is illustrated through an action research project that helped a playgroup to establish a wildlife garden where children could learn about and care for plants and animals. Returning to the broader global picture, the chapter concludes by stressing the need for joint adult-child action to protect the planet in/on which all humans live.

Abstract:
A collaborative design project has been implemented in a junior-level materials selection and manufacturing course. The team-based design problem involved the design of playground equipment for elementary school children. Focus groups of elementary students and a review of applicable construction standards were used to set design requirements. Each team comprised undergraduate on-campus students, undergraduate distance education students and junior/senior high school technology students. Initial design choices were made by the entire group. Subsequent calculations of stress, deformations, etc. to refine the design as well as choices of materials and manufacturing processes were primarily the purview of the undergraduate students. Drafting and integration of the design segments into a complete computer model was the responsibility of the high school students. Continuous communication between the groups was required for the process to be successful. This collaboration was facilitated via online forums and site visits. An overview of the project structure is presented along with a summary of the project outcomes and recommendations for improving the process.

Abstract:
Due to the current COVID situation, there’s a huge need for crowd control as well as efficient social distancing. Security cameras are everywhere but personnel to monitor it are few. In this project, we use crowd counting and detection along with social distancing monitoring which would enable efficient social distancing and control of the crowd intelligently. The lightening of the cumbersome task of the security professionals to monitor and analyze the crowd is done here making smart decisions on their behalf. In addition, masks are essential instruments to prevent a Corona infection; they are essentials for every individual in a crowd. In this project non-facemask wearing people can be detected at public places and an alert send for that particular individual which further helps control COVID infections. Intelligent system achieved by these two tasks will enable informed decision-making, efficient remote monitoring of crowd, proper social distancing and thus achieving safety at essential infrastructures like transport stations, schools, malls, airports, playground, hospitals etc. where tracking multiple cameras at the same time would be a hassle for security professionals. In this project, we propose a deep learning approach to accurately detect crowd above a certain restriction and make sure the individuals abide by wearing masks and social distancing effectively.
