Abstract:
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to introduce a model to assess web-based corporate social responsibility (CSR) disclosure prominence and use this model to explore the prominence of CSR disclosures of listed New Zealand (NZ) companies. Design/methodology/approach A CSR Disclosure Prominence Indicator Model was constructed using five key elements that include the dissemination medium, accessibility, location, content variety and extent of CSR disclosures. The websites of 65 of the largest listed NZ companies from 11 industry groupings were explored through this model. Findings A significant proportion (81.5 per cent) of listed NZ companies in the sample were utilising their websites for communicating CSR information to stakeholders. The CSR Disclosure Prominence Indicator Model revealed that companies that have CSR-related disclosures on their websites used multiple dissemination media and locations to enhance prominence of such disclosures. CSR commentary on the webpage was the most prominent dissemination medium due to its ease of accessibility, with a separate CSR webpage being the most prominent location. Environmental performance and society-related issues received the most prominent emphasis. Although companies from “sensitive” industry sectors appeared to disclose their CSR information more prominently, those from “less sensitive” industries also attempted to make their CSR disclosure more prominent and noticeable through strategic placement and through the extent of disclosure. Research limitations/implications The paper highlights the importance of managing web-based CSR disclosure prominence, thereby highlighting its significance in communication of CSR information. Practical implications Prominently placed CSR disclosures could be a significant platform for companies to strategically manage their image and identity. The CSR Disclosure Prominence Indicator Model could be utilised by companies to effectively assess and manage the prominence of CSR disclosures on their websites for more effective communication with stakeholders. Originality/value The paper complements earlier studies on CSR disclosures by constructing and applying a model to assess the prominence of web-based CSR disclosures.

Abstract:
Federal agencies and universities in the U.S. promote interdisciplinary research because it presumably spurs transformative, innovative science. Using data on almost 900 research-center–based scientists and their 32,000 published articles, along with a set of unpublished papers, we assess whether such research is indeed beneficial and whether costs accompany the potential benefits. Existing research highlights this tension: whereas the innovation literature suggests that spanning disciplines is beneficial because it allows scientists to see connections across fields, the categories literature suggests that spanning disciplines is penalized because the resulting research may be lower quality or confusing to place. To investigate this, we empirically distinguish production and reception effects and highlight a new production penalty: lower productivity, which may be attributable to cognitive and collaborative challenges associated with interdisciplinary research and/or hurdles in the review process. Using an innovative measure of interdisciplinary research that considers the similarity of the disciplines spanned, we document both penalties (fewer papers published) and benefits (increased citations) associated with it and show that it is a high-risk, high-reward endeavor, one that partly depends on field-level interdisciplinarity.

Abstract:
The patient, a young soldier aged 36 years having past history of malaria, was admitted in CMH Dhaka on 17 August 2011 as a transferred case from CMH Saidpur and died on 22 August 2011. The deceased was admitted in CMH Saidpur on 05 August 2011 with high fever for 05 days along with generalized joint and muscle pain. In spite of all available treatment the patient was deteriorating and he was then transferred to CMH Dhaka. At that time the patient was febrile, dehydrated and toxic with lymphadenopathy, extremely tender joints and muscles. The patient rapidly developed acute kidney failure and gradually developed features of DIC. His bone marrow examination revealed dyserythropoiesis with predominantly eosinophilic granulopoiesis, suggestive of myeloproliferative neoplasm with prominent eosinophilia. The patient was treated with injectable antibiotics, antimalarial and oral prednisolone with all intensive care facilities. Ultimately all attempts were proved unsuccessful and he died on 22 August 2011 at 1700 hrs. On autopsy the deceased had intra atrial thrombus and possibly that was the immediate cause of death. A haematological malignancy, myeloproliferative neoplasm with prominent eosinophilia, can very well produce such a fatal condition.
