Full textThe present work deals with pronouns in generative theory (from government and binding theory to the minimalist program) our goal is the following : besides a description, the purpose of this analysis is to show that both lexical pronouns an d empty pronouns can be accounted for by the same principles (for example chomsky's binding principles). We also assume the possibility of utilizing different levels of analysis. First, we study the french pronoun system (cliticization, per sonal pronouns, "on"). We assume then that dislocation comes from movement of a nominal or propositional phrase: every resomptive is a lexical trace a'-bound at the syntatic level. Following enc (1989), we propose a system of analysi s which we apply to french personal system as analyzed in the first section. Lastly, we try to tie the referential behavior of pronouns (personal, possessive, demonstrative). The second part of our analysis deals with empty pronouns. After presentation of the four types of empty nominal categories (as hypothesized by chomsky), we examine the various theories which account for the behavior of pro. We show that besides the arbitrary null object french has a specific null object in particular contexts. Following analyses opposed to chomsky's pro theorem, we propose that the null subject of non-finite propositions should be divided into three types : an anaphoric pro, a pronominal pro and a variable pro. We study the consequences of such a proposal for each of the propositional types. To conclude, we present a hypothesis of a unique empty category which could correspond to the contextual environment in which it appears

Full textThe main purpose of this study is to investigate the syntactic constraints on anaphoric binding in korean which has a non reflexive pronouns and three reflexive pronouns. My description draws on the basic representational assumptions of lexical-functional grammar (lfg) and the theory of anaphoric binding of mary dalrymple (1993 : the syntax of anaphoric binding). By analyzing the facts, i first show that korean pronouns differ from each other both with respect to the domain in which they must be bound (or free) and with regard to the elements which can be their antecedents. Then i argue against the traditional approaches that the distribution patterns and antecedency conditions of korean pronouns can be determined by a unique and universal principle such as the binding principles of the generative theory. Basing on the ideas developed by mary dalrymple (1993) and anne zribi-hertz (1992 : de la deixis a l'anaphore : quelques jalons), i propose instead that binding requirements must be lexically associated with each pronoun. I take the theory of lexical-functional grammar as a framework for formalizing the syntactic constraints on anaphoric binding in korean. It should be noted, however, that my analysis is in large part theory-independent, and could be translated into any lexically-based theory

Full textThis dissertation investigates the acquisition of Catalan morphosyntax and discourse properties of 3rd person accusative (el, la, els, les) and dative (li, els) clitics and oblique en, partitive en, oblique hi and locative hi by 9-to-12 year-old sequential bilinguals whose L1 is French or Portuguese. They are all schooled in Andorra. Portuguese and French have clitic pronouns like Catalan but, unlike Catalan and French, Portuguese does not have the clitics en and hi. Moreover, CLLD is only possible in French and Catalan. The results of three production tasks (two guided and a non-guided one) and a grammaticality judgement task indicate difficulties in clitic acquisition and omission of clitic forms such as locative hi, oblique en and oblique hi in L2 Catalan and in native children.

Full textDistributional analysis of the constituents of the noun group shows that there are three classes of determiners, each of which can be further sub-divided. Pronoun groups are derived from noun groups with ellipsis of the nominal part. Each class has a separate semantic role. That of articles is actualisation ; a second class deals with qualification ; the third expresses specification of the actualised noun group. Specifications identified include reference, non-reference, integrality and universal quantification. These conclusions are reached on the basis of the fondamental meaning of each lexeme, established by contextual and derivational studies, and by means of concepts borrowed from enunciation theory and logic. Homologies are revealed in the organisation of qualification and specification between the noun group and the adjective and verb groups in particular, adjectives like such, same, alike, and verbal forms like to do that, are proforms associating a categorial indicator and a marker of specification. In conclusion, the definition of determination must take into account both syntactic and semantic elements

Full textThis study aims to describe the usage of French relative pronouns by writers from the New France period in order to verify whether the variation attested in modern French was already present in French from the 17th and 18th centuries. To do so, the norm and usage of the relative pronouns in modern and historic French was thoroughly described. A corpus search was also conducted (MCVF corpus, annotated with syntactic tags, Martineau and colleagues, 2005-2010), which includes texts from three different writers from France and Canada (Marie-Andrée Regnard Duplessis, François Gendron and Marie Morin). The analysis of 2521 occurrences reveals that the usage of the writers is consistent with attested uses and descriptions found in metalinguistic sources on historic usage. We conclude that the relative pronoun systems in modern and historical French are similar. The variation heard in modern French was already present at that time, and was even slightly more significant.

Full textThe aim of this thesis is the study of the relative pronouns system in English. Its first part deals with the relative pronouns, from the point of view of traditional grammar, structural and transformational ones. Then, the basis of the analysis used was exposed in the second chapter. The last part presents the study of the relative pronouns: wh-ever, wh (o) (ich) (at), that and but, at the tongue level, in which one value is found, as well as at the discourse level, in which the surface and various uses of each pronoun are related to its unique value

Full textThis thesis explores the use of anaphoric personal pronoun in the narration following dialogue in literary text. The study is based on a nearly four hundred dialogue passages borrowed from XIXth century French novels. We have adopted the point of view that pronoun resolution is guided by the mental representation being constructed during discourse processing. All the expressions referring to characters, as well as implicit speakers in the absence of a reporting clause have been annotated in the passages. Besides the linguistic properties of referents, our study also considers dialogue’s alternating structure. After studying separately several features caracterizing a referent, such as +/– gender difference, +/– mentions in the narration before the dialogue, +/– being subject in the dialogue and +/– being speaker of the last quote, their combinations in chains were presented. Based on four different types of chains, a typology of transitions by referential (dis)continuity between narration, reporting clause and direct speech has been proposed. Of the studied features, the transitions are most influenced by the mentions of a referent in the narration before the dialogue and by different gender of discourse participants, but also by the referent being the speaker of the last line of the dialogue, while the fact of being the subject in the direct speech has less importance

We hope simply tried to rethink, in own fashion, the system of pronoums in the french language. The heterogenous aspect of the category of pronoums does not allow us to view this question from only one point of view. We hope first tried to define the domain of the pronoum, and then to classify and express the norms wich rule the distribution of these pronoums. Additionally, we hope questened ourselves concerning the syntaxic role of the pronoum and the limits of a grammar consisting of categories
Gracia, Barrón Justino. "De la pronominalité aux pronominalités : le cas des pronoms personnels atones de troisième personne en espagnol." Paris 4, 1996. http://www.theses.fr/1996PA040180.
Full textThe present study aims at : 1. Providing evidence that the concept of pronominality embodies a series of mechanisms which cannot be reduced to the essential value of the unit itself. 2. Revealing the non-pronominal use of the terms lo, la, los, las. 3. Demonstrating that while the above mentioned forms allow for pronominalisation, they do not, however, generate it. The study falls into three parts: the first part stresses the point that there seems to be no adequate definition which enables one to account for the pronoun as a grammatical category. In the second part, the author argues that the forms known as definite articles are in fact identical to those which are called third person atonal pronouns. The third part analyses how the items lo, la, los, las, le, les function in language. One discovers that their way of functioning tends to reveal on the surface and in context the structural potential contained in verbs

Full textThis dissertation investigates the peculiarities of pronominal reference to indefinite pronouns and epicene nouns that refer to indefinite human beings. It brings to light morphosyntactic, semantic and pragmatic factors which influence the choice of the anaphoric pronoun. This choice is not always objective, and does not necessarily match the rules of syntactic agreement. It tends to depend on the speaker’s decisions about the relevance of the sex and/or the number of individuals that are the topic of discussion. Thus, the third person plural pronoun they proves to be the best candidate when the referent’s sex and/or number is unknown by both the speaker and the hearer, as well as in generic contexts or when the speaker wishes to remain vague about the identity of the person he or she is referring to. The third person singular pronouns he / she do not fit in these contexts, since they render the referent more definite than it actually is in the discourse by adding such properties as sex and number. The choices that we make when referring or coreferring reveal our attitudes towards either referents or addressees. The study of both written and oral corpora (BNC, COCA, SOAP, CHILDES, literary, press and talk show corpora) reveals how English speakers are able to manipulate the conventional pronominal system so as to render explicit or highlight certain attributes and to underspecify others

Full textThis research is concerned with the study of the pronouns of address in Spanish from Bogota: usted, tu, vos and sumerce. Macro and micro sociolinguistic approaches are articulated by associating a quantitative study (300 surveys) and a qualitative study (radio and cinema conversations). We also analyze the pronominal form alternation, which consists in the switching from a pronoun to another in the same exchange, with the same interlocutor. These changes are interpreted through the analyses of J. Gumperz about the "code - switching". Our thesis is also based on studies of P. Trudgill and others (P. Kerswill, D. Tuten), about "dialect contact". Interactions between speakers from various dialects of Colombia in Bogota give evidence that in spite of the canonical uses of personal pronouns, where the usted and the tu overlay pragmatic values, similar to the French vous and tu, the allocutionary system in Bogota is moreover characterized by an instability in the use of these forms

Full textThis study is an example of conjunction of an interlinguistic comparison and analysis of errors. The contrastive analysis of the expression of five categories which appear in pronouns (the person, the number, the gender, the animacy and the function) confirms that grammatical categorisation does not always square with semantic categorisation in a same language and they don't square one with another in two languages such as french and korean. Error analysis shows that the difficulties in learning french pronouns by korean people concern, for the most part, the general notional categories, essential composants of communication. The practice of french pronouns by koreans is a grammatical process, progressive and so different from that in the maternal language, of certain pragmatic intentions (designate or repeat) in the target language. It is in this point of view that we envisage the reexploration of the conclusions of the contrastive analysis and the error analysis and that we redefine the nature of the pedagogic intervention in the practive of french pronouns
de, la Fuente Israël. "Putting pronoun resolution in context : the role of syntax, semantics, and pragmatics in pronoun interpretation." Sorbonne Paris Cité, 2015. http://www.theses.fr/2015USPCC053.
Full textThis thesis investigates the mechanisms involved in pronoun resolution in ambiguous contexts. Beyond the typical psycholinguistic approach that puts forward the factors that play a role in pronoun interpretation, we propose an in-depth analysis of the discourse structure of the context where the pronominal dependency is established in order to explain why the role of these factors varies as a function of the contextual circumstances. We argue that the discourse unit (DU) is the optimal domain for the study of pronoun resolution. We propose a "relational" definition of DU, whereby the DU configuration of a complex sentence depends on the syntactic, semantic, and pragmatic content of the subordinate clause and its relation with the matrix clause. We analyze two types of adverbial adjuncts : non-relational (temporal) and relational adjuncts (causal). We argue that, while the former are processed as part of the same DU as the matrix clause, the latter are processed as separate dus from the matrix clause. We claim that the du configuration of the sentence has an effect on pronoun interpretation and that factors affecting resolution have a different weight according to whether they occur within a DU or across two DU. We propose that pronoun resolution searches a maximum of discourse coherence and that interpretation preferences come about in the process of maintaining coherence (intra-unit) or establishing coherence (inter-unit). We test these claims with a series of experiments that investigate the role of the syntactic function of the antecedent, its information status, and the coherence relations between propositions in the context of 1 or 2 DU, in english, french and spanish

Full textThis dissertation provides a contrastive and typological study of pronoun allomorphy in two Finno-Ugric languages: Hungarian and Erzya Mordvin. Contrastive typology is a typological approach aiming at contrasting the structures of two or more languages, including from the same language family, to explore specific and universal properties. From this standpoint, Hungarian and Mordvin are particularly relevant as to the structure of pronoun markers, due to some morphological characteristics of the central and eastern languages of the Uralic language family, such as double conjugation paradigms (subjective and objective, moreover the "objective definite inflectional paradigm" in Mordvin). This results in complex allomorphic patterns, while following universal principles (syncretism, sub-specification and over-specification of certain markers, or the conditions of morphonologic exponence). The first part describes the structures and modelling stages of the pronominal system in both languages. In the first chapter, we present historical and structural generalities about the Hungarian and Mordvin Erzya languages, and the place they occupy within the Finno-Ugric group, from the point of view of classification and typology. A series of important features to understand the two systems in terms of structural organization, concerns the allomorphic properties of functional and relational units of pronominal type such as vowel harmony, the casual suffixes, the verbal system, and word order. The second chapter deals with the relationship between personal pronouns and basic grammatical categories such as animacity, number, person, definiteness, and concludes that it is the personal pronoun that is most marked by these grammatical categories - the same that may affect, in the languages of the world, the construction or organisation of inflectional classes. The third chapter is a historiographical approach of Hungarian and Erzya to show the outline of the research on the evolutionary periods of both systems. The fourth chapter provides a reanalysis of pronominal inflection in Erzya, following the same principles as those previously recommended by András Kornai's analysis of the nominal inflection system of Hungarian (Kornai, 1994), as it deals with the morphological model considering affixation as an operation on the combined features. The second part of this research develops exploratory case studies from the perspective of NLP (French: TAL) a literary corpus and a biblical corpus of Erzya are analysed following the steps and the settings required by the Trameur software. The third part departs from the contrastive analysis of stylistic registers within a given language to return to a Hungarian-Mordvin contrastive structural typology. In the last chapter, we propose a synthesis of these two aspects of contrastive typology: contrasting registers of intralanguage, contrast-linguistic structures, based on a set of shared parameters. The synergy between the lexicometric method and the general typology is one of the main contributions of this thesis’s heuristics to develop a typology of Finno-Ugric languages that takes greater account of the contrastivity of structures and their relativism as major categorical traits of interlanguage, resulting more sensitive to empirical and methodological biases that may conceal a large corpus

Full textThis dissertation investigates the syntax and the acquisition of determiners and pronouns in Dutch and French. The adopted syntactic analysis makes predictions for the acquisition of these elements by monolingual children acquiring Dutch or French. These predictions are confirmed by the results of two elicited production and comprehension tasks. On the one hand, data reveal that Dutch-speaking children omit determiners up to a higher age than French-speaking children. Furthermore, Dutch-speaking children contrary to French-speaking children, make gender errors. For pronoun acquisition on the other hand, the two dissociations already reported in the literature for French are also found in Dutch: first, subject pronouns are acquired before object pronouns, and second, reflexive pronouns are mastered earlier than non-reflexive pronouns. Our comparative study shows that French-speaking children master object pronouns better that Dutch-speaking children of the same age

Full textThis thesis in English linguistics studies all the uses of IT, whether referential or non-referential. Firstly, this work tries to define the concept of reference as precisely as possible. The status of IT as a "pronoun" is also analysed. Moreover, all the uses of IT (anaphoric, cataphoric, deictic, non-referential, etc.) are analysed in a wide variety of sentences (subject and object extraposition, it-cleft, left and right dislocation, idioms, advertising slogans, etc.) This thesis claims that the referential status of IT cannot simply be divided in two categories : referential or non-referential. On the contrary, it seems that reference can be calculated on a continuum or scale from strongly referential to weakly referential

After a general presentation of different forms of pronouns, we have underlined the distinctive features of the clitic pronoun. This one is different from agreement and noun phrase. Moreover, it is not a morphological head but a syntactic one. In the light of the thematic dependance system, we have explained why the occurence of the clitic is possible in some syntactic positions and impossible in others. In our morphosyntactic analysis of the sentence, some structural autonomy. In opposition the tradition approch, we have analysed the so-called nominal sentence in the same way as the verbal sentence. We have also supposed that even the verb can be case-market like the noun and adjective. In the terms of minimalite. Theory, we have proposed a general system of incorporation in arabic shows which category can incorporated in another one. Furthermore, we have studied the problem of the clitic relation of the direct object the indirect object on one hand, and the to agreement on the other hand. Finally, we have formulated a new all-encompassig structure of the clitic pronoun in which, every clitic must be conditioned another elemnt functionning as its complement

Full textCataphoric reference or backwards anaphora has received less attention than anaphoric reference. Generative grammar explains cataphoric pronouns in terms of syntactic constraints. Other studies have suggested that SN possessive and subject cataphoric pronoums correspond to stylistic choices or are used to recall referents that have been mentioned in the previous discourse (Kuno, 1975). Studies of naturally occurring cataphora in English (Carden 1982 ; De Hoek, 1997) invalidate this thesis and report that the majority of cataphoric forms appear in subordinate clauses introduced by temporal connectives (such as "before", "when") and in preposed phrases. In French, there are no studies about the occurrence of natural cataphoric pronouns. In a study based on texts of Le Monde Diplomatique 1984-1998, we account for the frequency of cataphoric pronouns in subordinate clauses introduced by "quand" and "bien que", and we distinguish those pronouns from anaphoric pronouns in the same configuration. We also show the context in which each kind of pronoun appears

Full textWe started from a general remark about the frequency, reiteration and particularly the persistence, since many years, of numerous errors of a particular kind. These errors are relative to the use of personal pronouns of the French language produced by Tunisian learners. We developed the project through working on the diverse obstacles of different sources to which the Tunisian learner is exposed in the learning and use of this linguistic fact. The problems related to this learning and this use seem to be of a double particularity. One the one hand, the problems are specific to the nature of this element in the language (This category of morphemes is very complex because of the morpho-syntactic constraints which it presents) and inherent to its convergence and divergence degrees with the corresponding language facts of the learner’s mother tongue, the Tunisian Arabic dialect, and also with the “first second language”, the Standard Arabic. On the other hand, they are general which means that they are related to the context in which the language is taught. Many parameters, mainly sociolinguistic and psycholinguistic problems, intervene in this context. The issue of the status of the French taught in Tunisia is raised. This status varies from one cycle to another and one region to another and which requires, in all cases, appropriate methods and pedagogical practices. The thesis that we develop in this work is built on the idea that the remarked problems in the use of personal pronouns originate from different general and specific factors that have always acted unfavorably in the learning-teaching of the grammar in general which, despite the subsequent reforms, have never been taken into consideration. Hence, the failure of the learning-teaching of personal pronouns is essentially related to the absence of consideration of the real difficulties involved in this context both to the teachers and the learners

Full textThe aim of this research is to study the way children acquire the referential use of nouns and pronouns in dialogues with their mother. The question is to determine whether the child acquires the pragmatics values of these referential expressions after their morpho-syntactic forms or at the same time? The analysis of our longitudinal data, three French-speaking children aged between 1;11 and 3 years, shows that determiner categories are gradually acquired and that the process implies the use of precursory phenomena, such as ‚filler-syllables‛. We also observe that young children show a certain ability to introduce, maintain and reintroduce referents with appropriate referential expressions. Those findings suggest that the referential valuesof nouns and pronouns are acquired from a very early age in French language

Full textWhile grammars of English today view gender as a category that can be easily accounted for, they fail to explain many of its uses. For example, why are there so many variations in discourse for a given referent ? Why use the feminine sometimes for a ship or a lawn, but the masculine for a fork or a spider ? This thesis explores the true foundations of the category of gender in modern English, by analyzing those pronouns on which gender is marked. After defining the notion of gender and reviewing existing theories, it offers a detailed analysis of an extensive corpus sampling language use from the 16th century to the present. It shows obvious evolutions in the use of gender in discourse ; the study seeks to determine whether they reflect systemic evolutions or whether they can be ascribed to other factors. Finally, a cognitive description of the category, enriched with a brief comparison with dialects, enables to look into the fundamental function of gender

Full textThis dissertation investigates the main issues concerning the internal structure of pronouns and noun phrases without an overt noun. On the syntactic side, it distinguishes between pronouns and phrases with an empty noun. The main semantic distinction is between the nominal anaphora reading and the interpretation without nominal anaphora. This distinction does not coincide with the syntactic distinction between pronouns and phrases with an empty noun. Among pronouns, we distinguish (i) pronouns allowing adnominal modification, which differ from determiners followed by an empty noun by the form and by the absence of the N-anaphoric reading; these are mainly indefinite pronouns; we analyze them as determiners incorporating a grammatical noun; (ii) pronouns which do not allow adnominal modification, which we analyze as intransitive determiners; in this class we include Personal pronouns, except for the transitive instances of 1-2 person pi. Pronouns found in some languages. We present the main analyses of personal pronouns which have been proposed and we produce novel arguments in favor of our analysis. Concerning phrases with empty nouns or noun ellipsis, after having noticed the availability of both readings, with and without nominal anaphora, we discuss: (i) the issue of the nature of nominal anaphora (base generation or deletion) and (ii) the licensing of the empty noun. We show that there exist very general licensing conditions, but many phenomena which have been explained by syntactic licensing conditions are to be analyzed as morphological alternations

Full textThe grammarians' vision, their different descriptions of the pronoun “se”, the syntactical capacities they give it and the discursive uses they attribute to it or borrow from authors, are the object of the analyses in the first part of this work. A first major statement results from those analyses : the various values given to this pronoun, and which would be consecutive to a primary reflexive value, corresponding most often, in reality, to the nuances expressed in the occurrences in which it applied. In the second part, starting from Gustave Guillaume's basic theory of the uniqueness of the significant, the pronoun “se” in contemporary Spanish is first the object of a morphological analysis concerning the elements of its structure and its position in the Spanish pronominal system. The word “se” is then studied in relation to the verb, within the scope of the syntactical structure in which it intervenes as a sentence component. The comportment of the third person, which it signifies, in connection with the verbal operation, is thus determined. Then, from discursive occurrences, taken in a contemporary "corpus", the various effects of meaning

Full textThe present dissertation deals with the syntactic phenomena called reduplication in the linguistic study of albanian, of balkan language and of romance languages where they occur, the object being reduplicated by an unstressed form of the personal pronoun. The author provides a description of the cases where i. The utterance includes the object and the unstressed form of the pronoun 2. Only the unstressed form occurs; 3. Only the object occurs. This analysis leads to the conclusion that unstressed forms are no longer of a pronominal nature and must be considered as quasi-morphemes, a greeing in person, number and case with the object, just as verb endings agree with the subject. Transitive verb forms appear to include an empty slot to be filled which intransitive verbs don't. Unstrassed forms of personal pronouns thus become verb markers of the presence or absence of the object (hence of transitivity vs. Intransitivity) but also of case, as is always the case for the dative object and, in definite cases, for the accusative object

Full textThis thesis is composed of four chapters: in the first chapter, we have studied the words' order in tangier arabic dialect (tad). We have found out that this language has only two order possibilities: svo (subject-verb-object) and vso. Any other different order gives way to marked phrases, indeed excluded. In the second chapter, we have given an analysis of verbal and nominal morphology in tad. We have demonstrated how words are derivative thus the different categories they are made of. In the third chapter, we have elaborated a phrasal verb structure theory in tad, i. E. A structure which considers both the flexionnal elements order regarding the verb, and the syntactic constituents' one, namely the subject and object. In the fourth chapter, we have studied morphologic and syntactic properties of clitic pronoun in tad and we have elaborated a derivation theory of this morpheme

Full textThe form of referential expressions used to refer to specific entities in a discourse often depends on the way in which mental representations of these entities have been previously established. Consequently, some entities mentioned in an utterance are more salient, more"focused" than others, and this focusing would set constraints in using different types of referential expressions available. The goal of our research - based on psycholinguistic models of anaphora processing ("theory of focus" in memory, Sanford and Garrod, 1981, 1994 ; "centering theory", Grosz, Joshi & Weinstein, 1995, 1998) - is to study the referential functioning of two kinds of pronouns : anaphoric pronouns (il) and anaphoric-deictic pronouns (celui-ci). Our first experiment studying the referential contrast between anaphoric pronoun and repeated proper noun is an attempst to assess, in the French language, some results previously obtained in English by Gordon et al. (1993, 1995). Two others experiments aim at characterising the functioning of both above mentioned types of pronouns. Results indicate that only pronoun processing would be sensitive to the focusong of discourse entities (unlike repeated proper noun processing), but in opposite ways : indeed, if an anaphoric pronoun, clearly indicates to maintain attention on the focused entity, an anaphoric-deictic pronoun would rather indicate a shift in attention locus. Regarding the latter type of pronoun, whose functioning is particulary clear in situations of "control of referential ambiguity risk" (Carolles, 1995), it led us to an attempt to a simulation of induced our own results. These simulations, whose goal is to specify cognitive mechanisms underlying pronominal anaphora processing, constitute the basis for our study of referential functioning in patients with dementia of the Alzheimer's type
