Abstract:
This paper considers the utility of the Voice Extensible Markup Language (Voice XML) for language learning. In particular, this article considers whether Voice XML might become as popular as HTML. First, this paper discusses the surprising popularity of HTML, which provides contextual information useful for considering the potential of Voice XML. Second, this article discusses two voice scripts in order to demonstrate Voice XML tags and features. The first example script concerns voice synthesis only whereas the second script utilizes both voice synthesis and voice recognition. In order to gain insight into the utility of Voice XML for instructional applications, the second voice script can be accessed by language learners in order to practice pronouncing words in English. Technically, each voice script is a text file containing Voice XML tags. Once the file containing a Voice XML script is stored on a web server and a telephone number linked to the file, a language learner can use a telephone to practice pronouncing words. Those implementation details are considered in the third section of this paper, which identifies one particular system that permits developers to test and deploy Voice XML scripts free of charge. Lastly, this article concludes with a discussion of issues concerning the utility of Voice XML relative to HTML.

Abstract:
On the nameplates of streets and location directions in Yogyakarta that apply Javanese script, Latin writing derived from foreign languages is transliterated using swara script and rekan script. This research will reveal the application of swara script and rekan script in the rules of writing Javanese script. This research is a qualitative descriptive. Data collection techniques use documentation and note-taking techniques. The analysis technique applied is to input a picture from each street sign according to the type of swara and rekan script used then writes an explanation of the relationship between the script and the Latin script below it. The findings of this study are that the swara script is used to write down vowel scripts that become syllables, especially those derived from foreign languages, to emphasize their pronunciation. The swara script cannot be used as a pair script so the carakan script contained in front of it must be turned off with pangkon. The rekan script is used to inscribe consonant scripts on foreign words that are still preserved originally. There are 2 ways to turn off consonant sounds, namely by using the pangkon symbol and using pairs from the carakan script in the next word. ABSTRACTThis study investigated phonetic activation in reading a nonalphabetic script – Chinese. Since the Chinese ideographic script can be read with more than one dialectal pronunciation, a reader who has learned to read in two dialects will have two pronunciations for the same word stored in his memory. Thus, interference effects will occur. Sixteen subjects who read in Cantonese and Mandarin and 16 subjects who read in Mandarin but not in Cantonese were tested in a similarity judgment task based on pairs of Chinese words that were pronounced the same or differently in one or both of the dialects. That automatic phonetic activation would occur even for an ideographic script such as Chinese was supported by the results.

Abstract:
Lampung Province has 20 Lampung characters and 12 Lampung scripts as characters that need to be preserved. Lampung script learning is currently still using conventional methods so that many students begin to ignore this subject because it feels less interesting and boring. This study aims to build an application that can help users introduce Lampung script in the world of education on smartphones by applying Augmented Reality technology. By applying Marker Based Tracking which is one of the methods used in the development of Augmented Reality technology. This method works by recognizing and identifying patterns on markers to bring up virtual objects into the real environment. The system development uses the waterfall method with the stages of problem identification, initial planning, design and design, implementation, testing, and evaluation. This results in an Augmented Reality application to introduce Lampung script which is equipped with features showing 3D Lampung script, pronunciation of each Lampung script object, script gallery, guide for each menu and 20 Lampung script markers. Which type of smartphone camera can affect the application's ability to see objects at a certain angle to the marker, but is still quite safe at angles between 500 to 1800.

Abstract:
Javanese script is a priceless cultural heritage. The form of the script and the art of making it become a legacy that deserves to be preserved. Javanese script is used in various Javanese texts and several other languages around the narrative area. This script is better known as Hanacaraka or Carakan. However, over time the use of Javanese script began to decrease. Many people don't know Javanese script. One of the causes is the form of Javanese script which is more difficult to understand than Latin script so that the interest in learning is reduced. In today's technological development, learning media are beginning to use technology as a learning tool. This is to improve the quality and effectiveness of learning. One of the technologies that has been implemented is Augmented Reality. This technology is able to represent real objects into virtual objects in the form of images, video or audio. Learning Javanese script can use this technology to improve the effectiveness of learning. This Augmented Reality was created using Vuforia who later designed the application using Unity. With the creation of Javanese script learning media applications that implement Augmented Reality technology, it is easier to understand Javanese script. Especially understanding the form and pronunciation. So that the knowledge and use of Javanese script will continue to be preserved.

Abstract:
Abstract Muyaka’s poetry as it is known today was first recorded in the 1890s, mainly written down by Mwalimu Sikujua who used Arabic script as well as an adapted Swahili-Arabic writing system to document the language. Sikujua’s versatility when using the Arabic script as well as his use of variant spellings suggest a writing practice that embraces rather than avoids orthographic variation. His use of diacritics including the shadda and hamza is particularly noteworthy. Muyaka’s poems with their frequent repetitions as well as the writing of the poet’s name feature multiple spellings by Sikujua even when applying the adapted Swahili-Arabic script. Sikujua invented solutions that best approach a Swahili pronunciation but he also displays a detailed understanding and creative use of a wide range of Arabic signs and diacritics. The complexities of writing Swahili with Arabic script benefit from Sikujua’s creativity. It is this versatility and creativity that has been largely ignored and misinterpreted as merely inconsistent in studies where standardization is considered preferable.

Abstract:
The paper deals with the issue of Yugoslav ideology and its role in suppressing the Serbian Cyrillic script. There were two different approaches in the concept of Yugoslavism as developed on the grounds of Illyrism (Lj. Gaj) in the midnineteenth century: the Croatian and the Serbian ones. The Croatian Yugoslavism (J.J. Strossmayer) was of a pro-Catholic and anti-Serbian character language and writing, it was manifested through annulling of Serbian language in the domain of "Croatian state legislation" and supression, prohibition and persecution of Serbian Cyrillic script. On the other hand, Serbian approach to Yugoslavism (T. Pavlovic, J. Subotic etc) was a tolerant one: the lingual diversity of the south Slavic peoples opposing the need for their co-operation. By the beginning of the 20th century the Croatian variant of Yugoslavism (with its three-tribal nation concept) prevailed over the Serbian one and became the grounding ideology for the new, common state. Its lingual union basing on the domination of the eastern ? ekavian ? pronunciation variant (from the Serbian language) and Latin letters (from the Croatian) was disadvantageous to both spoken and written Serbian language: the Serbs have accepted Latin writing and the Croats have never accepted the so-called eastern pronunciation. The consequences have not for diminished the Serbian Cyrillic script with the decline of the Yugoslav ideology (which was first abandoned by the Croats) nor with the falling apart of the Yugoslav state.

Textual transmission is viewed in the West typically as a destructive process that results in ever greater corruption and error in a text, and the enterprise of textual criticism in correspondingly seen as the task of restoring the damaged text to a form as close to its original as possible. In China such a negative view of the process of textual transmission does not normally obtain, and textual criticism therefore does not carry the image of being primarily a rehabilitative procedure.An important part of the reason for the different perception of the consequences of textual transmission and of the goals of textual criticism lies with the nature of the writing systems involved. Western texts in alphabetic scripts directly reveal errors at the level below that of the word, e.g., spelling errors, grammar errors, pronunciation errors, etc., for which no interpretation is available save that of seeing them as mistakes. Orthographic errors in Chinese texts, written in logographic script, are not prone to such immediate identification as mistakes. All variants in a text written in a logographic script have the potential to be meaningful and therefore are perceived as different, but are not stigmatized automatically as wrong.

Abstract:
Indonesia is one of the countries with diversity and abundant cultural wealth, one of which is the Batak Toba script as one of the wealth originating from the Batak tribe. However, the existence of the Batak Toba script is decreasing along with the rapid development of the times, due to the lack of interest of the younger generation and public awareness in preserving the Batak Toba script. From these problems, the author conducted research to create a model of introducing the Batak Toba script, as an effort to preserve the Batak Toba script which is one of Indonesia's cultural wealth. The purpose of this research is to create a Batak Toba script recognition model using a digital handwriting dataset, and has an output in the form of visual text and with audio pronunciation of each script. The method used in this research is the Convolutional Neural Network algorithm combined with RMSprop optimizer. Convolutional Neural Network is an algorithm that is one of the deep learning methods that has good performance on image data. The results of this study incised a recognition model with a relatively high level of accuracy, which is equal to 99,54% which was tested on the Batak Toba script dataset in the form of digital handwriting. Through this research, the model using the Convolutional Neural Network algorithm used in this research is able to produce good results for recognizing the Batak Toba script in the form of handwriting.

Abstract:
In this paper, a machine-based transliterate is presented. The automatic transliteration of Ottoman to the modern Latin Turkish script can open a big window for scientists in fields of history and literature while most of the Turkish people are not familiar with Ottoman script, despite the fact that no concrete solution has been proposed yet for this issue. The proposed method includes several steps since the transliteration process of Ottoman alphabet to Latin base consists of many problems; the first is the basic character mapping which covers the regular pronunciation and orthography mapping. On the other hand, covering other irregular and extraordinary cases is based on rules and normalization. The transliteration system achieved 73.9% accuracy in general.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the role and significance of a unified script and Mandarin Chinese for the political and cultural formation of ancient China. From the Qin dynasty on, the bureaucracy was staffed by intellectual elites selected from their localities but sharing a unified script system and approximately similar pronunciation. The forms of writing and pronunciation, therefore, became a crucial part of China's “cultural constitution.” The chapter shows how the script and its two aspects, reading and speaking, were unified. It considers the Qin dynasty's unification of the script system, based on the judgment that the standardization of Chinese characters became the basis of China's bureaucratic governance. It also discusses the constitutional significance of a unified speech, how Mandarin Chinese was maintained and spread, and how a unified script integrated the scholar-officials in different geographical locations in a transgenerational cultural community.

This chapter shows readers the importance and application of pattern matching in learning languages; specifically, the application of natural language processing to address specific problems of Japanese learners of English at a public university. The chapter introduces the concepts of patterns, detection, and detection methods. The author turns to the pedagogic application of pattern matching, first discussing the relevant theory, then describing hacks developed by language teachers and learners. The final section describes and evaluates iCALL tools developed at the University of Aizu, including a mobile app and the Pronunciation Scaffolder, a real-time presentation script annotator.

Abstract In most linguistic analyses a word is described as a set of properties, or features (Lado 1972; Chomsky 1965; Gibson and Levin 1975; Richards 1976). Thus knowing a word would ideally imply familiarity with all its properties, as is often the case with an educated native speaker. When a person ‘knows’ a word, he/she knows the following: the word’s pronunciation, its spelling, its morphological components, if any, the words that are morphologically related to it, the word’s syntactic behaviour in a sentence, the full range of the word’s meaning, the appropriate situations for using the word, its collocational restrictions, its distribution and the relation between the word and other words within a lexical set. (For a discussion of word knowledge see, for example, Nation 1990 and Laufer 1991). Unlike an educated native speaker of a language, the foreign language learner knows a much smaller number of words. In some European countries and Israel lexical knowledge is about 2,000–3,000 word families, in some Asian countries 750–1,500 (Laufer 1991). In many cases, word knowledge is only partial, i.e. the learner may have mastered some of the word’s properties but not the others. In fact, the plurality of word features to be learnt increases the probability of a word being only partially learnt. One possible source of information about a totally new word or a partially learnt word is the learner’s dictionary. The phonetic script shows the right pronunciation, the grammatical specifications provide information about the syntactic behaviour of the word, the derivatives in the entry show which words are morphologically related to the looked-up word. The definition explains the meaning, or meanings of the word, register specification adds information about the affective and pragmatic aspects of meaning.

Abstract Writing Arabic aimed to provide an acceptable model for writing the Arabic script. Pronouncing Arabic I is likewise normative, and aims to provide for imitation an acceptable mode of reading aloud a written Arabic text. The variety of reading ‘accents’ in the Arab world imposes both geographical restriction and the choice of a well-known, codified reading style. In view of the undeniable cultural and demographic dominance of Egypt, there can be no reasonable objection to the selection of an Egyptian accent, which not only is recognized and esteemed beyond the borders of Egypt but also conforms to an established code of orthoepy, in the traditional sense of ‘correct’ [sic) pronunciation of written forms. An orthoepic approach is adopted for purely practical reasons and does not imply acceptance of the widespread Arab view that written Arabic is alone worthy of study. Even within such well-defined practice, however, permissible variation does occur in the reading style of educated Egyptians and is attributable to their regional origins and educational training as well as to the subject-matter that is read and the circumstances in which reading takes place. Written Arabic of a formal kind is broadly reducible to two varieties: on the one hand, the high Classical Arabic of ancient beginnings and Islamic liturgy, and, on the other, the more modern language of contemporary literature, journalism, news broadcasting, technological writing, administration, and diplomacy (so-called Modern Standard Arabic).

Abstract In general, literary papyrology does not offer the modern linguist much insight into the spoken language of the ancient Greeks, since a papyrus containing a literary text is by default a more controlled product than a documentary text. Unlike a private letter, petition, or contract, a literary papyrus is not a ‘living ‘ document and does not aim to convey practical information. Rather, it is a copy of a text that was often first written some centuries earlier and in a standardized literary language. Moreover, the scribe of a literary text has a particular ‘intellectual ‘ interest; hence his level of education can generally be assumed to be higher than that of the ‘author ‘ of a private document. This is not to say that literary papyri do not contain the usual misspellings which arose in the Hellenistic and Roman periods as a result of changes in pronunciation; of course they do, but no more so than documentary texts.
