The sentence “Bill washed his car, and John did, too” has two possible interpretations if the overt his refers to Bill: (i) a coreferential interpretation, in which John washed Bill’s car, or (ii) a bound variable interpretation, in which John washed his own car. What guides comprehenders’ selection of one over the other? Previous research has identified factors such as processing economy (e.g. Reuland, 2001) and lexical semantic properties of the verb and possessed noun (e.g. Foley et al., 2003; Ong & Brasoveanu, 2014). Abstract One of the contributing factors to the Romantic reconceptualization of poetical work and of literary genius is a modernisation of the concept of property in the course of the 18th century. In the texts of English Romanticism in general and of William Wordsworth in particular, this modernisation inaugurates a new rhetoric of property for which two factors are decisive: firstly, the reversibility of possessors and possessed and, secondly, the proclamation of imaginary possessions that might also be designated as „phantom properties“.

This chapter defends a middle ground between two extremes in the literature on the place of reasons in epistemology. Against members of the “reasons first” movement, we argue that reasons are not the sole grounds of epistemic normativity. We suggest that the virtue-theoretic property of competence is rather the key building block. To support this approach, we note that reasons must be possessed to ground central epistemic properties, and argue that possession is grounded in competence. But while we here diverge with reasons-firsters, we also distance ourselves from those who deem reasons unimp

Abstract:
Abstract Several types of very high strength copper nickel alloys are tested with respect to environment sensitive mechanical properties which include hydrogen embrittlement and exposure to sulfide and ammonium compounds. It is found that Cu-Ni-Al-Mn-Nb alloys with nickel content up to 25wt% are resistant to hydrogen embrittlement, sulfide stress corrosion and stress corrosion in ammonium environments, whereas Cu-Ni-Sn materials demonstrate susceptibility to stress corrosion. A study of factors controlling stress corrosion susceptibility of Cu-Ni-Al and Cu-Ni-Al-Mn-Nb alloys shows the principa

A comparative assessment of the chemical composition of amaranth green mass cultivated in 2022 and 2023 was carried out. It was revealed that the content of nitrates, tannins and phytates in the 2023 harvest exceeded these indicators compared to the 2022 harvest by 3.3, 1.4 and 4 times, respectively. The amount of oxalic acid was 16 times lower, and that of tannins did not exceed the maximum permissible concentration of 0.5%. At the same time, the content of proteins and fats decreased by 12.6 and 31.6%, respectively, and the amount of fiber increased by 8.5%. The process of enzymatic treatmen

Abstract The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Ohio Coal Development Office (OCDO) are sponsoring the “Boiler Materials for Ultrasupercritical Coal Power Plants” program. This program is aimed at identifying, evaluating, and qualifying the materials needed for the construction of critical components for coal-fired boilers capable of operating at much higher efficiencies than the current generation of supercritical plants. Operation at ultrasupercritical (USC) conditions (steam temperatures up to 760°C (1400°F)) will necessitate the use of new advanced ferritic materials, austenitic stain

Abstract There is, currently, simultaneous public resistance to traditional waste handling procedures and a compelling need to destroy both military and civilian hazardous waste. Supercritical water oxidation (SCWO) is one developing technology particularly appropriate for treating a broad range of dilute aqueous organic wastes. Above its critical point (374°C and 221 atm) water is a low density fluid possessing properties intermediate between those of a liquid and a gas, and solvation characteristics more typical of a low polarity organic than water. Although this is a promising technology, a

Abstract In the worldwide oil and gas industry, the application of epoxy phenolic coatings has been a dominant strategy to obtain high heat resistance from coatings and to mitigate corrosion under insulation (CUI) of both insulated carbon and stainless steel pipes operating up to 392°F (200°C). These coatings, however, are sensitive to over-application, prone to cracking, and costly to repair when damaged. Additionally, if applied below 50°F (10°C) epoxy phenolic coatings do not cure properly and can fail prematurely, and when applied close to this temperature, can impact shop heating costs, m

Abstract:
Nonlinear optical properties of quantum wells (QW’s) and superlattices (SL’s) 1,2 are attracting increasing interest. Calculations and observations of strong third-order nonlinearities were reported in GaAs-GaAlAs QW and SL structures. Among the phenomena mentioned as leading to large values of x(3) in such structures are conduction band nonparabolicity 3,4, exciton line saturation 5 and the quantum confined Stark effect (QCSE) 6,7. Practical devices using QCSE, the so-called self-electrooptic effect devices, or SEED’s have been successfully demonstrated 8.

This work provides an institutional, legal and policy review of crucial aspects of land records modernisation systems in Himachal Pradesh. A state characterised by hilly terrain, high forest cover and low urbanisation, Himachal Pradesh provides useful lessons to understand the robustness and diversity of land record administration systems. The property regimes that have historically developed in the state include customary rights, common property resources, jointly held rights, and multiple other use and possession arrangements. There is a restriction on who can transact properties in the stat
