Magnetic thin films and patterned nanostructures have been studied with respect to their magnetic properties using SQUID-magnetometry, magnetic force microscopy, electrical measurements, and micromagnetic calculations. My dissertation research focuses on the investigation of the transport and magnetic properties of transition metal and rare earth doped oxides, particularly SnO2 and HfO2 thin films. Cr- and Fe-doped SnO2 films were deposited on Al2O3 substrates by pulsed-laser deposition. Xray- diffraction patterns (XRD) show that the films have rutile structure and grow epitaxially along the (101) plane. The diffraction peaks of Cr-doped samples exhibit a systematic shift toward higher angles with increasing Cr concentration. This indicates that Cr dissolves in SnO2. This thesis is concerned with the growth, electronic properties and modification of hydrogenated amorphous carbon films of a thickess range of 50-300 nm, which have been deposited using rf plasma-enhanced chemical vapour deposition. These films may be subdivided into two types according to the electrode on which they are grown and the resulting film properties. These are polymer-like amorphous carbon or PAC, and diamond-like amorphous carbon or DAC. Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with the synthesis and characterisation of TiO2 based photocatalyst thin films and the assessment of their antimicrobial properties. When exposed to light of wavelength less than 380 nm TiO2 films can demonstrate self-cleaning and self-disinfecting properties. This is due to photocatalytic processes occurring on the film surface resulting in film superhydrophilicity and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production.
