Abstract:
Criterion of acceptance or rejection of a tradition is an important subject in ḥadīth sciences. Many principles have been established in this regard. Pakistani scholar Amīn Aḥsan Iṣlāḥī has also described his viewpoint and set some standards of receiving or refuting a particular tradition. This article studies these standards in the light of his “Mubādī-e-Tabbur-e-Ḥadīth”. It finds that Iṣlāḥi has established six principles. According to these principles every ḥadīth is subject to criticism; no ḥadiṭh contrary to reason, Quran and established prophetic Sunnah is acceptable.

Abstract Muslim history is animated with examples of women who mastered the art of ḥadīth (Prophetic traditions) sciences and besides this, they had also displayed their expertise in the field of Al-Jarḥ wa Taʿdīl (Validation and Impugnment) of Prophetic traditions. The science of Al-Jarḥ wa Taʿdīl is a very subtle and sensitive branch of Usūl al ḥadīth (the science of ḥadīth) which deals with acceptance or rejection of Prophetic narrations, based on the trustworthiness and weaknesses of ḥadīth narrator. AbstractMost Muslims today understand the term sunna to refer to the sunna, or normative practice, of the Prophet as contained in the standard collections of Prophetic ḥadīth. Because of the relatively late appearance of these collections, and the frequent anomalies between their contents and those of early fiqh sources, many Western scholars have concluded that the concept of the “sunna of the Prophet” is a secondary development that is not reflected in the earliest stages of Islamic law. Understanding ṣaḥīḥ ḥadīths has remained a critical methodological discourse in both classical and contemporary Islamic studies. Two major hermeneutical approaches—textual and contextual—are central to this discourse. The textual approach emphasizes a literalist reading of the ḥadīth text in order to preserve the authenticity and sanctity of the Prophet Muhammad’s teachings. In contrast, the contextual approach considers the socio-historical and cultural background in which a ḥadīth was transmitted, thereby enabling its normative messages to remain relevant to contemporary realities. While the ḥadīth and sunna preserve the collective memory of liberating moments for Muslim women, much of this tradition also upholds and perpetuates the institutions of patriarchy and male dominance. This chapter starts out by exploring “tension reports” in the Islamic narrative tradition that are alleged historical memories of the exercise of women’s agency in a fashion that challenged or defied the instituti
