Munerman, Viktor, Vadim Borisov, and Aleksandra Kononova. Mass data processing. Algebraic models and methods. INFRA-M Academic Publishing LLC., 2023. http://dx.doi.org/10.12737/1906037.

Full text
Abstract:
The monograph is devoted to mathematical and algorithmic support of mass data processing based on algebraic models. One of the most common classes of mass processing is considered - processing of highly active structured data. The construction of algebraic models of data and calculations and methods of proving their correspondence are analyzed. Three algebraic systems are studied, which can be used both as data models and as models of calculations. The algebraic and axiomatic methods of proving the correspondence of these models are investigated. A proof of their correspondence is given: homomorphism and isomorphism. The problem of optimizing the processes of mass processing of data presented in the form of algebraic expressions in the proposed algebra models is raised. The algorithms of synthesis and optimization of calculation of these expressions, the method of symmetric horizontal data distribution providing parallel implementation of calculation of algebraic expressions and generalization of the block algorithm of parallel matrix multiplication for the case of multiplication of multidimensional matrices are described in detail. Architectures of software and hardware complexes for effective parallel implementation of operations in the considered algebra models are proposed. A number of real-world examples illustrating the application of the proposed methods are given.

Full text
Abstract:
The monograph, based on a long-term interdisciplinary study, outlines the features of the diagnosis and rehabilitation of injuries from overload of the lower limb on movement patterns unnatural for normal life, but typical for types of motor activity associated with the art of movement (choreography, classical dance, rhythmic gymnastics, etc.). It is shown that not so much professional requirements, as a lack of constitutional conditioned abilities are the cause of overload damage, the main predictor of which is muscle hypertonicity.
The main X-ray morphological types of the structure of hip joints in this contingent of persons are given. The clinical significance of evaluating the performance of basic choreographic elements and the availability of professional abilities for diagnostic purposes is shown. A professionally oriented algorithm for diagnosing overload damage has been proposed, unique clinical-functional and clinical-biomechanical diagnostic methods have been developed. Reference indicators of dosing and assessment of the adequacy of local physical activity on the restored link of the musculoskeletal system are proposed, a mathematical model of their application is developed.
Professionally oriented methods and features of using physical activity with a training effect for rehabilitation purposes using sports training tools and natural and geographical factors, as well as features of the use of Chinese Taijiquan gymnastics are described. The algorithm of multilevel rehabilitation based on N.A. Bernstein's theory of motion construction is described.

Albrecht, Eduardo. Political Automation. Oxford University Press, 2025. https://doi.org/10.1093/9780197696989.001.0001.

Abstract:
Abstract Governments, once staffed exclusively with human bureaucrats, now routinely use AI-based software to gather information about citizens and make decisions that impact their lives. In many nations, AI determines the level of privacy a person can enjoy, how far they can travel, what public benefits they may receive, and what they can and cannot say publicly. This amounts to a phenomenon of political automation rapidly materializing globally and begs the question: What input do citizens have in how these machines think? The book explores this question in various domains—including policing, national security, and international peacekeeping. Via interviews with individuals active in civil society groups across several geographic contexts, the book seeks to achieve an understanding of popular attempts to interact with this novel form of algorithmic governance. It emerges that if citizens wish to have rights and representation in a future increasingly characterized by political automation, then a new institution is needed. The book proposes the idea of a Third House, a virtual chamber that legislates exclusively on AI in government decision-making and is based on principles of direct democracy. Digital citizens, AI powered replicas of ourselves, would act as our personal representatives to this Third House a virtual chamber that legislates exclusively on AI in government decision-making and is based on principles of direct democracy, unlike existing upper and lower houses that are representative. Digital citizens, AI powered replicas of ourselves, would act as our personal emissaries to this Third House. Deploying political automation without such an institution will result in the gradual sunsetting of participatory systems of government, and perhaps of yet more significant concern, the start of an era in which citizens, having abdicated governance in favor of AI without clear mechanisms for oversight, find they no longer need to trust their conscience on matters of public policy.

Abstract:
In this chapter, we focus on symmetric encryption. We begin by identifying two different types of symmetric encryption algorithm, namely, stream and block ciphers. We discuss the basic idea behind a stream cipher and consider their properties and applications. We then introduce block ciphers. We focus on two extremely important and influential block cipher algorithms, the Data Encryption Standard and the Advanced Encryption Standard, discussing the history of their development as well as their basic design. We then introduce the modes of operation of a block cipher, explaining why different modes have been proposed. We examine in detail four of the most well-established modes of operation and their core properties, as well as classifying other modes of operation.

Abstract:
The encounter of “personalized experiences”—targeted advertisements, tailored information feeds, and “recommended” content, among other things—is now a common and somewhat inescapable component of digital life. More often than not however, “you” the user are not primarily responsible for personalizing your web engagements: instead, with the help of your search, browsing, and purchase histories, your “likes,” your click-throughs, and a multitude of other data you produce as you go about your day, your experience can “conveniently”—and computationally—be personalized on your behalf. This book explores a host of new questions that emerge from web users’ encounters with these forms of algorithmic personalization. What do users “know” about the algorithms that apparently “know” them? If personalization practices seek to act on users’ behalf (for instance, by deciding what content is personally relevant), then how do users retain or relinquish their autonomy? Indeed, what kinds of selfhoods are made possible when personalization algorithms intervene in identity construction? Making It Personal is the first full-length monograph to critically analyze the sociocultural implications of algorithmic personalization through the accounts and testimonies of web users themselves. At the heart of the book are interviews and focus groups with web users who—through a myriad of resistant, tactical, resigned, or trusting engagements—encounter algorithmic personalization as part of their lived experience on the web. The book proposes that for those who encounter it, algorithmic personalization creates new implications for knowledge production, autonomy, cultural capital, and formations of self.

Whether we are booking a flight, applying for a loan, or looking for a life partner on an Internet platform, a machine is often involved on the side of our contractual partner, arriving at a decision or proposal on the basis of an algorithm-supported preselection. The use of algorithms and artificial intelligence raises a variety of questions, some of which are of a legal nature, but also relate to ethics, economics and technology. The book - which reproduces the presentations and discussions at a conference in Bonn - explores these questions: In which areas is regulation necessary, and in which can the development and use of algorithms be left to the market? Abstract:
This chapter presents an “algorithmic criticism,” which seeks, in the narrowing forces of constraint embodied and instantiated in the strictures of programming, an analogue to the liberating potentialities of art. It proposes that we create tools—practical, instrumental, verifiable mechanisms—that enable critical engagement, interpretation, conversation, and contemplation. The chapter furthermore proposes that we channel the heightened objectivity made possible by the machine into the cultivation of those heightened subjectivities necessary for critical work. Moreover, this chapter argues that scientific method and metaphor (or, more precisely, the use of these notions within the distorted epistemology we call “scientism”) is, for the most part, incompatible with the terms of humanistic endeavor.

Bipolar disorder (BD) is a chronic and disabling illness, with lifetime prevalence of 2.4% worldwide. Predominant polarity (PP), ie, depressive versus manic, may influence illness characteristics, treatment selection, and outcomes in BD. PP has been proposed as a course specifier for BD, although not included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (5th edn) (DSM-5). The polarity index (PI), a metric algorithm that reflects antimanic versus antidepressant maintenance efficacy of available treatments for BD, is calculated as the ratio of number needed to treat (NNT) for prevention of depression and NNT for prevention of mania. Evidence indicates that the net PI of ongoing maintenance-treatment regimens for BD is related to the patient’s PP. Additionatlly, PP and PI may aid in treatment selection and outcome prediction in BD. Therefore, this chapter provides an overview of putative roles of PP and PI in the course and treatment selection for BD.

Abstract:
Live algorithms are an ideal concept: computational systems able to collaborate proactively with humans in the creation of group-based improvised music. The challenge is to achieve equivalence between human and computer collaborators, both in formal terms and in practice (evident to both performers and audience alike). The fundamental question is the capacity for computational processes to exhibit “creativity.” The problems inherent in computer music performance are considered, in which computers are quasi-instruments or act in proxy for another musician. Theories from social psychology and pragmatics are explored to help understand live music-making as a special case of social organization; namely, Kelley’s covariation model of Attribution Theory and Grice’s Maxims of Cooperation. This chapter outlines a description of how human beings and computers might engage on an equivalent basis and proposes how social psychology theories, rendered in formal language, can point to new horizons in human-computer performance practice.

Abstract:
This chapter proposes an auxiliary particle filter algorithm for inference in regime switching stochastic volatility models in which the regime state is governed by a first-order Markov chain. It proposes an ongoing updated Dirichlet distribution to estimate the transition probabilities of the Markov chain in the auxiliary particle filter. A simulation-based algorithm is presented for the method that demonstrates the ability to estimate a class of models in which the probability that the system state transits from one regime to a different regime is relatively high. The methodology is implemented in order to analyze a real-time series, namely, the foreign exchange rate between the Australian dollar and the South Korean won.

Abstract:
Acute coronary syndromes (ACS) include unstable angina pectoris (UAP), non-ST elevation (NSTEMI), and ST elevation acute myocardial infarction (STEMI). Each year, more than 2 million people are hospitalized with ACS in the United States. The initial treatment has evolved over the last few decades from conservative management to early reperfusion therapy. Medical therapy has also significantly changed with the use of newer more potent antiplatelet agents, beta-blockers, angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors, statins, and anti-anginal drugs, which have resulted in improvement of patient care and survival. There is no role for stress myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) in the acute presentation; however, rest MPI may be used to identify the culprit lesion and risk stratify patients if injected during chest pain. In stable patients for ACS, submaximal exercise or vasodilator MPI can be performed as early as 48 hours after the event. Several gated MPI-derived variables such as left ventricular (LV) ejection fraction (EF), LV volumes, infarct size, mechanical dyssynchrony, and residual ischemic burden can risk stratify patients and provide prognostic data incremental to validated clinical risk scores such as GRACE (Global Registry of Acute Coronary Syndrome) and TIMI (Thrombolysis in Myocardial Infarction). Patients with depressed LVEF, remodeled LV, and large perfusion defects are at particularly high- risk for subsequent cardiac death or recurrent myocardial infarction. In such setting, MPI plays a pivotal role in the management of patients and guiding therapeutic decisions. The current chapter will review the clinical and MPI predictors of outcomes in patients presenting with ACS according to updated guidelines and a proposed algorithm integrating the role of MPI in guiding therapeutic decisions and management.

From the perspective of K-Universe, the formation of sovereign states is governed by recursive applications of K-Algorithm, and results in T-Isomorphs. Chapter 7 proposes Sierpinski recursion as an intuitive and commonsensical alternative to the existing ones, confronting it with those that can be gleaned from four constitutional theories––foundational constitutionalism, constitutional pluralism, para-constitutionalism, and radical pluralism—imagined also as potential problem-solving templates. In order to look at these theories more practically, what also needs to be reimagined is the conception of ultimate constitutional authority: away from the preoccupations with origins and narratives, and towards fuzzy, yet discernible mental image: a multi-dimensional matrix of presumed authority-challenges that informs the theorists’ attitudes towards a range of relevant issues in constitutional theory—from narrative identity and the character of political collectivity to constitutional pluralism and constitutionalism.

Abstract:
Depression is a ubiquitous illness for which primary care is now on the front line, providing care to millions of patients. Identifying these patients and providing adequate care is beyond the capabilities of our current medical approach. New algorithms from research and unique techniques based on new technologies now exist for optimizing our current Electronic Health Records (EHR) into a powerful support tool for psychiatric patient care. This chapter examines the theories, biopsychosocial techniques, ongoing research, technologies, and protocols from other areas of Medicine that have been successful in capturing and evaluating patient status and guiding medical care. These concepts are modeled into how primary care colleagues can receive automated guidance and psychiatry can be referred those cases which require specialist intervention. A multimodality paradigm for an enhanced EHR which minimizes primary care physician efforts and maximizes identification, escalating management, and tracking of psychiatric patient care is proposed.

Abstract:
Patient comfort is a primary goal in ICU, but achieving and maintaining the appropriate balance of analgesia, sedation, and treatment of delirium is frequently challenging. International guidelines recommend keeping critically-ill patients calm and cooperative, awake in daytime and asleep at night, always avoiding deep sedation. To state the actual level of sedation and the desired one, it is necessary to frequently perform a sedation assessment with validated tools. Subjective methods are the most useful guides in ICU consciously-sedated patients, representing the gold standard for good clinical practice. Use of such a scale is a key component of sedation algorithms. The ideal scoring system should be easy, reliable, sensitive, and with minimal interobserver variability, giving no or minimal additional discomfort to the patient. Most of the proposed tools are a compromise between accuracy and time required for evaluation; the most used are the Richmond Agitation-Sedation Scale and the Sedation-Agitation Scale.

Abstract:
The effectiveness of the application of regional theoretical and methodological strategies for understanding the dynamics of identification in the ukrainian space, civilizational and cultural features of territorial development, complex interdependencies between national and regional dimensions of the historical process is analyzed. Regional identity is considered as a form of collective identity, representing the practices of spatio-temporal identification of society and value identification with the external socio-cultural area. The causes of conflict-proneness of regional problems in Ukraine, related to the specifics of the identity of regions, different socio-cultural values and mental stereotypes, are clarified. The potential of regional history as a conceptual model for studying territorial specificity and spatial interaction in historical retrospect, conflict dimensions of the formation of regional identity and strategies for constructively solving identification problems, is substantiated. Algorithms for responding to challenges of identity conflicts are proposed in the context of improving and strengthening the information and cultural security of Ukraine

Hui, Yuk. Recursivity and Contingency. Rowman & Littlefield International Ltd, 2019. https://doi.org/10.5040/9798881812522.

Full text
Abstract:
This book employs recursivity and contingency as two principle concepts to investigate into the relation between nature and technology, machine and organism, system and freedom. It reconstructs a trajectory of thought from an Organic condition of thinking elaborated by Kant, passing by the philosophy of nature (Schelling and Hegel), to the 20th century Organicism (Bertalanffy, Needham, Whitehead, Wiener among others) and Organology (Bergson, Canguilhem, Simodnon, Stiegler), and questions the new condition of philosophizing in the time of algorithmic contingency, ecological and algorithmic catastrophes, which Heidegger calls the end of philosophy. The book centres on the following speculative question: if in the philosophical tradition, the concept of contingency is always related to the laws of nature, then in what way can we understand contingency in related to technical systems? The book situates the concept of recursivity as a break from the Cartesian mechanism and the drive of system construction; it elaborates on the necessity of contingency in such epistemological rupture where nature ends and system emerges. In this development, we see how German idealism is precursor to cybernetics, and the Anthropocene and Noosphere (Teilhard de Chardin) point toward the realization of a gigantic cybernetic system, which lead us back to the question of freedom. It questions the concept of absolute contingency (Meillassoux) and proposes a cosmotechnical pluralism. Engaging with modern and contemporary European philosophy as well as Chinese thought through the mediation of Needham, this book refers to cybernetics, mathematics, artificial intelligence and inhumanism.

Abstract:
We live in a pre-crime society. Within this society, information technology strategies and techniques such as predictive policing, actuarial justice and surveillance penology are used to achieve hyper-securitization. However, such securitization comes at a cost. In this new people-making society, the criminalisation of everyday life is guaranteed, justice functions as an algorithmic industry and punishment is administered through dataveillance regimes. Exploring relevant theories, developing technologies and institutional practices, this pioneering book explains how the pre-crime society operates in the ‘ultramodern’ age, reviews this society’s cultural effects and proposes new directions in crime control policy. Edited by critical and cultural criminologists, Bruce A. Arrigo and Brian G. Sellers, the volume brings together an international cast of interdisciplinary scholars, working at the intersections of data science, digital culture, and justice studies. This is the first collection to comprehensively consider the relevance and impact of the pre-crime society thesis, across the systems of state, national, and global surveillance and securitization.

Abstract:
Evolutionary processes combine many features of complex systems: they are algorithmic; states co-evolve with interactions; they show power law statistics; they are selforganized critical; and they are driven non-equilibrium systems. Evolution is a dynamical process that changes the composition of large sets of interconnected elements, entities, or species over time. The essence of evolutionary processes is that, through the interaction of existing entities with each other and with their environment, they give rise to an open-ended process of creation and destruction of new entities. Evolutionary processes are critical, co-evolutionary, and combinatorial, meaning that thew entities are created from combinations of existing ones. We review the concepts of the replicator equation, fitness landscapes, cascading events, the adjacent possible. We review several classical quantitative approaches to evolutionary dynamics such as the NK model and the Bak–Snappen model. We propose a general and universal framework for evolutionary dynamics that is critical, co-evolutionary, and combinatorial.

Full text
Abstract:
The book is devoted to the research and development of methods for combining computational structures for reconfigurable signature-based information protection tools for computer systems and networks in order to increase their efficiency. Network security tools based, among others, on such AI-based approaches as deep neural networking, despite the great progress shown in recent years, still suffer from nonzero recognition error probability. Even a low probability of such an error in a critical infrastructure can be disastrous. Therefore, signature-based recognition methods with their theoretically exact matching feature are still relevant when creating information security systems such as network intrusion detection systems, antivirus, anti-spam, and wormcontainment systems. The real time multi-pattern string matching task has been a major performance bottleneck in such systems. To speed up the recognition process, developers use a reconfigurable hardware platform based on FPGA devices. Such platform provides almost software flexibility and near-ASIC performance. The most important component of a signature-based information security system in terms of efficiency is the recognition module, in which the multipattern matching task is directly solved. It must not only check each byte of input data at speeds of tens and hundreds of gigabits/sec against hundreds of thousand or even millions patterns of signature database, but also change its structure every time a new signature appears or the operating conditions of the protected system change. As a result of the analysis of numerous examples of the development of reconfigurable information security systems, three most promising approaches to the construction of hardware circuits of recognition modules were identified, namely, content-addressable memory based on digital comparators, Bloom filter and Aho–Corasick finite automata. A method for fast quantification of components of recognition module and the entire system was proposed. The method makes it possible to exclude resource-intensive procedures for synthesizing digital circuits on FPGAs when building complex reconfigurable information security systems and their components. To improve the efficiency of the systems under study, structural-level combinational methods are proposed, which allow combining into single recognition device several matching schemes built on different approaches and their modifications, in such a way that their advantages are enhanced and disadvantages are eliminated. In order to achieve the maximum efficiency of combining methods, optimization methods are used. The methods of: parallel combining, sequential cascading and vertical junction have been formulated and investigated. The principle of multi-level combining of combining methods is also considered and researched. Algorithms for the implementation of the proposed combining methods have been developed. Software has been created that allows to conduct experiments with the developed methods and tools. Quantitative estimates are obtained for increasing the efficiency of constructing recognition modules as a result of using combination methods. The issue of optimization of reconfigurable devices presented in hardware description languages is considered. A modification of the method of affine transformations, which allows parallelizing such cycles that cannot be optimized by other methods, was presented. In order to facilitate the practical application of the developed methods and tools, a web service using high-performance computer technologies of grid and cloud computing was considered. The proposed methods to increase efficiency of matching procedure can also be used to solve important problems in other fields of science as data mining, analysis of DNA molecules, etc. Keywords: information security, signature, multi-pattern matching, FPGA, structural combining, efficiency, optimization, hardware description language.

Abstract:
Coronary artery disease (CAD) remains the leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. While the burden of the disease remains high, the rates of death attributable to CAD have declined by almost a third between 1998 and 2008. In patients with stable ischemic heart disease (SIHD), data supporting survival benefit from coronary artery bypass graft surgery (CABG) or percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) versus no revascularization are outdated with the recent advancement in medical therapy. Over the years, myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) has played a significant role in detecting ischemic burden, risk stratifying patients and guiding physicians to the best treatment strategy. Contrary to data from other trials, the role of stress MPI has been downplayed in more contemporary randomized clinical trial that failed to show that ischemic burden identifies the ideal candidate for revascularization or carries incremental prognostic value. Hence, there is an equipoise on the role of MPI in the management of patients prior to revascularization. The role of stress MPI post-revascularization has also been evaluated in multiple studies, mostly done in the last decade or prior. The guidelines advocate against routine stress MPI in asymptomatic patients (unless 5 years or more post-CABG), but allows it in the presence or recurrence of symptoms. The current chapter will review the data on survival benefit from revascularization, complementary role of stress MPI in selecting the appropriate candidate for revascularization, prognostic value of ischemic versus atherosclerotic burden, role of MPI post revascularization, updated guidelines and proposed algorithms to guide the treating physicians.

Abstract:
Most users of management software packages don't realize how much effort analysts, designers, programmers, and installers put into creating these solutions. Due to the rapid progress of information technologies, the software and computer hardware of the used systems become outdated quite quickly. After some time, both manufacturing and service enterprises face the dilemma of modernizing the systems in use, including switching to a newer version of the package. But sometimes, as a result of the analysis, it turns out that the amount of necessary changes exceeds 40%. So, should you adapt one of the off-the-shelf versions or perhaps build your own custom cyber-resistant system? The proposed study guide for students, and not only, of "Management, logistics and administration" specialties corresponds to the education of IT system designers in the fields of activity, especially in enterprises, which are so needed in practice. The first part of the manual presents individual examples of computerized control systems as a perspective on the construction of various applications. The second part introduces the reader to a set of tools that help create new and implemented solutions in information technology and engineering. Of particular note is the instruction on how to use the UML language in the creation of flowcharts so that structural sequences of source codes for software solutions can be automatically generated from them. It is worth adding that a valuable addition to this work is a more detailed explanation of the concepts and presentation of formulas, especially in the field of econometrics, which are necessary in the modeling of algorithms of economic phenomena.

Abstract:
Abstract Bringing together leading scholars, members of the judiciary, and practitioners, this book provides a cutting-edge, comprehensive, and multifaceted analysis of data retention and the subsequent access of law enforcement authorities to retained electronic communications data. In the aftermath of the invalidated Data Retention Directive, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) has published rich case law that shapes the rules, requirements, and safeguards on retention and access in accordance with EU law. This book focuses on selected topics surrounding data retention aiming not only at providing a critical assessment of legal and policy developments, but also at guiding policy makers on the potential future for data retention regulation in the European Union and beyond. Chapters in this book explore the development of the EU case law, the interaction with ECtHR jurisprudence, the interplay between data retention and mass surveillance, the proportionality principle in the CJEU rulings, and data retention in the proposed ePrivacy Regulation, while no fewer than 11 chapters are dedicated to country-specific analyses of European Member States. Acknowledging that data retention is far from an EU matter only, the book also offers international perspectives, with country-specific chapters on India, Japan, and the United States. The book is complemented with chapters dedicated to the role of the courts in the context of data retention, epistemic (in)justice, extensive contributions on automated analysis of retained data by means of algorithms, and retention as intrinsic facet of administrative and surveillance vulnerability. Comprehensive and informative, this book is a valuable tool for everyone interested in the topic, from students and legal scholars, to practitioners and policy-makers.

Abstract:
Computational propaganda can take the form of automated accounts (bots) spreading information, algorithmic manipulation, and fake news to shape public opinion, among other methods. These techniques are being used in combination with the analysis and usage of large data sets of information about citizens held by corporations and governments. This form of propaganda is spreading to countries all over the world, most notably during the 2016 US presidential elections and the run-up to the UK’s referendum to leave the European Union (Brexit). This chapter examines the use of computational propaganda in Brazil, by looking at three recent cases: the 2014 presidential elections, the impeachment of former president Dilma Rousseff, and the 2016 municipal elections in Rio de Janeiro. It examines the legal framework governing the Internet and the electoral process online, particularly how this process relates to computational propaganda. It also seeks to understand how bots are involved in multifarious economic and political themes, and in ongoing debates in the country about corruption, privatization, and social and economic reform. Through a collection and analysis of hashtags related to major investigations into corruption in politics, as well as to proposed reforms to social support systems and the protests related to them, the chapter identifies bots that are involved in these debates and how they operate. Finally, it looks at potential responses to this kind of propaganda, from legal, technical, and organizational perspectives, as well as indications of future trends in the use of these techniques in Brazilian society and politics.

Abstract:
Reified Life: Speculative Capital and the Ahuman Condition addresses the most pressing political question of the 21st century: what forms of life are free and what forms are perceived legally and economically as surplus or expendable, human and otherwise. Reified Life theorizes the dangerous social implications of a posthuman future, whereby human agency is secondary to algorithmic processes, digital protocols, speculative financial instruments, and nonhuman market and technological forces. Narkunas contends that it is premature to speak of a posthuman or inhuman future, or employ an ‘ism, given how dynamic and contingent human practices and their material figurations can be. Over several chapters he diagnoses the rise of “market humans,” the instrumentalization of culture to decide the life worth living along utilitarian categories, and the varied ways human rights and humanitarianism actually throw members of the species like refugees outside the human order. Reified Life argues against posthumanist calls to abandon the human and humanism, and instead proposes the ahuman to think alongside the human. Reified Life elaborates speculative fictions as critical mechanisms for envisioning alternative futures and freedoms from the domineering forces of speculative capital, whose fictions have become our realities. Narkunas offers, to that end, a novel interpretation of the post-anthropocentric turn in the humanities by linking the diminished centrality of humanism to the waning dominion of nation-states over their populations and the intensification of financial capitalism, which reconfigures politics along economic categories of risk management.
