Abstract:
In the Portuguese imagination Florence is justly considered the cradle of modern western civilisation. Seen and admired from the Renaissance on as the new Athens, for the Portuguese it has always represented not only a model of culture and civilisation to take as inspiration, but also and above all the locus amoenus of spiritual and intellectual harmony and balance, dreamed-of and unattainable, that floods and pervades the soul with a vague, nostalgic sentiment of admiration. Evidence of this, now as in the past, are the serried ranks of poets who for centuries have sung its praises and raised

Abstract Robert Kramer argues that Otto Rank created the principles of modern psychotherapy. Drawing on Sigmund Freud’s invention of the analytic hour, Rank proposed that an authentic relationship heals emotional suffering, with self-empowerment of clients the goal. Today, the quality of the relationship is at the heart of all social work, counseling, and psychotherapy. In the late 1920s, Jessie Taft and Virginia Robinson applied Rank’s ideas on relationship therapy to develop the self-leadership capacities of social workers and their clients, mostly women, creating the first strengths-based a

Abstract:
The relationship between myth and literature has taken varying forms, the most obvious being the use of myth in works of literature. ‘Myth and literature’ explores mythic themes in literature and the mythic origin of literature. Common plots have been proposed for specific kinds of myths, most often for hero myths. It discusses the Viennese psychoanalyst Otto Rank (1884–1939), the American mythographer Joseph Campbell (1904–87), and the English folklorist Lord Raglan (1885–1964) who have theorized about the patterns that they have delineated in hero myths. Despite concerted efforts from our educators, administrators, and government, American education continues to struggle. The author of this work argues that the decline can be traced to censored curricula, inaccurate textbooks, test-driven evaluations, and increasing poverty among the student population. Under the definition of “failure” specified in the No Child Left Behind Act, more than 80 percent of American schools could currently be labeled as failing, while the quality of American education overall and our students’ performance continue to rank unfavorably against international competiti

Abstract:
The dominance style of bonobos presents an evolutionary puzzle. Bonobos are not male dominant but female bonobos do not show traits typical of female-dominant species. This chapter proposes the offspring dominance hypothesis (ODH) as a potential solution. ODH suggests the social system of bonobos evolved as a defence against infanticide and is not due to pressure to monopolize resources. Females that prevented aggression towards offspring and preferred mating with less aggressive males were most successful. Supporting ODH, during observations at Lola ya Bonobo Sanctuary it was found that: 1) a

Abstract A recent and popular electoral and political reform sweeping across the United States is ranked choice voting (RCV). This method of group decision-making asks voters to create an ordered list of preferences over a range of alternatives. Proposed as a solution to inherent problems with plurality or first-past-the-post elections, RCV has some paradoxical characteristics and implementation issues of its own. In North America, RCV is neither new nor uniform in its application. RCV can be used for the selection of a single winner, such as a public official or a group consensus, or multiple

Chapter 5 examines the experiments at RAND with a new future science, a “general theory of the future” capable of explaining human behavior and developments in the world system. The chapter also proposes that futurology was ultimately a failure, as forms of prediction encountered criticism and led to a discussion within RAND about the epistemological limits of prediction. As RAND researchers came to the conclusion that prediction was logically and empirically impossible, they shifted their interest from predicting actual future developments, to prediction as a “social technology”—a means of ac

The book discusses how to reduce legal risk by choice of law and courts. Taxonomy of Australian Mammals utilises the latest morphometric and genetic research to develop the most up to date and comprehensive revision of the taxonomy of Australian mammals undertaken to date. It proposes significant changes to the higher ranks of a number of groups and recognises several genera and species that have only very recently been identified as distinct. This easy to use reference also includes a complete listing of all species, subspecies and synonyms for all of Australia’s mammals, both native and introduced as well as terrestrial and marine.

This ethnography explores the controversial plans and practices of the Maitreya Project, as they worked to build the “world's tallest statue” as a multi-million dollar “gift” to India. This effort entailed a plan to forcibly acquire hundreds of acres of occupied land for the statue park in the Kushinagar area of Uttar Pradesh. The Buddhist statue planners ran into obstacle after obstacle, including a full-scale grassroots resistance movement of Indian farmers working to “Save the Land.” In telling the “life story” of the proposed statue, the book sheds light on the aspirations, values and prac

Nationalism: Past as Prologue began as a single volume being compiled by Ad Akande, a scholar from South Africa, who proposed it to me as co-author about two years ago. The original idea was to examine how the damaging roots of nationalism have been corroding political systems around the world, and creating dangerous obstacles for necessary international cooperation. Since I (Bruce E. Johansen) has written profusely about climate change (global warming, a.k.a. infrared forcing), I suggested a concerted effort in that direction.
