Abstract:

Abstract:
Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, School of Architecture and Planning, Program in Media Arts and Sciences, 2006.
Includes bibliographical references (p. 89-93).
Playgrounds are special places within the urban landscape specially designed for children. Here, they encounter the outdoors and the physical properties of large spaces through play, which allows children to develop their physical skills, explore the natural and built environment as well as interact with their peers. Even more importantly, children direct their own play activities in playgrounds in an open-ended way. As digital technologies become increasingly present in children's lives an important question arises regarding their role in playgrounds. This thesis contributes to playground design in a meaningful way by exploring how digital technologies can enhance children's open-ended and physically active play in outdoor settings. Can animated playground props support and possibly enhance open-ended and physically active play in playgrounds? This thesis expands the repertoire of objects conceived specifically for children's outdoor play environments through a review of existing technologies and designs followed by a design exploration with a new category of animated playground prop. I develop an ecological approach to children's digital playground props which takes into account the links among children <--> props <--> play settings.
In playing with objects, children gather information about the physical characteristics and embedded meanings of their three-dimensional surroundings. In other words, children's interactions with play props are one lens for experiencing the world. This theoretical framework leads me to a new category of animated prop called "space explorer". The thesis describes a design process for one prop, an autonomous, pneumatic playground ball which is part of the "space explorers" category. The method combines design development with input from children in two workshops about their playground and specific objects. The design and research exploration concludes with reflections and recommendations for future attempts to design more autonomous and responsive objects which can enrich children's outdoor play experiences.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation examines the role of stage properties-props, slangily-in the construction and expression of characters' identities. Through readings of both canonical and non-canonical drama written between 1600 and 1707-for example, Thomas Middleton's The Revenger's Tragedy (1607), Edward Ravenscroft's adaptation of Titus Andronicus (1678), Aphra Behn's The Rover (1677), and William Wycherley's The Plain Dealer (1677)-I demonstrate how props mediate relationships between people. The control of a character's props often accords a person control of the character to whom the props belong. Props consequently make visual the relationships of power and subjugation that exist among characters. The severed body parts, bodies, miniature portraits, and containers of these plays are the mechanisms by which characters attempt to differentiate themselves from others. The characters deploy objects as proof of their identities-for example, when the women in Behn's Rover circulate miniatures of themselves-yet other characters must also interpret these objects. The props, and therefore the characters' identities, are at all times vulnerable to misinterpretation. Much as the props' meanings are often disputed, so too are characters' private identities often at odds with their public personae. The boundaries of selfhood that the characters wish to protect are made vulnerable by the objects that they use to shore up those boundaries. When read in relation to the characters who move them, props reveal the negotiated process of individuation. In doing so, they emphasize the correlation between extrinsic and intrinsic worth. They are a measure of how well characters perform gender and class rolls, thereby demonstrating the importance of external signifiers in the legitimation of England's subjects, even as they expose "legitimacy" as a social construction.

Alavesa, P. (Paula). "Combining storytelling tradition and pervasive gaming: Props." Master's thesis, University of Oulu, 2014. http://urn.fi/URN:NBN:fi:oulu-201311261931.

Full text
Abstract:
Background: Stories told are becoming more immersive and a new type of storytelling has been emerging during the last two decades with the rise of digital media and Web 2.0. What is perceived as gaming and the span of gaming events are expanding with pervasive gaming and possibilities brought by technological convergence and ubiquitous computing. Maybe there is room for slight shift back to the old charm of a more intimate storytelling event where everyone is present in one form or another when the story is told. Context and Objective: During this master’s thesis work pervasive gaming and storytelling were fused in a game called Props. It is a storytelling pervasive game that spans between two realities of 3D virtual and real environment. The game is located in a stage that has representation in two cities, the one in real life and the one in virtual reality. Method: This thesis describes the design science research development and empirical evaluation of Props storytelling pervasive game. Props was evaluated by staging game play events on different occasions. Data gathered varied depending what game event was in question. Props was tested on four occasions in total. First two tests were during the early development. These test events were audio taped. Props was introduced during children’s story hour, where the event was observed and small questionnaire was dealt to the participating performers. The third game event was during six workshop sessions with adolescent school kids who were guided by amateur performers. During that event the participating adolescent were dealt qualitative questionnaires. These events were also videotaped. Related exploratory literature review has been concurrent during the yearlong development and has been revisited whenever new topics have arisen. Results and Conclusions: It is possible to combine storytelling tradition and pervasive gaming. Setting of the game, numbers of participants and guidance have a big role in how adolescent throw themselves into storytelling and improvisational acting when it is mediated by a game like Props.

Abstract:
The main theme of this thesis is higher algebraic structures that come from operads and props. The first chapter is an introduction to the mathematical framework needed for the content of this thesis. The chapter does not contain any new results. The second chapter is concerned with the construction of a configuration space model for a particular 2-colored differential graded operad encoding the structure of two A∞ algebras with two A∞ morphisms and a homotopy between the morphisms. The cohomology of this operad is shown to be the well-known 2-colored operad encoding the structure of two associative algebras and of an associative algebra morphism between them. The third chapter is concerned with deformation quantization of (potentially) infinite dimensional (quasi-)Poisson manifolds. Our proof employs a variation on the transcendental methods pioneered by M. Kontsevich for the finite dimensional case. The first proof of the infinite dimensional case is due to B. Shoikhet. A key feature of the first proof is the construction of a universal L∞ structure on formal polyvector fields. Our contribution is a simplification of B. Shoikhet proof by considering a more natural configuration space and a simpler choice of propagator. The result is also put into a natural context of the dg Lie algebras coming from graph complexes; the L∞ structure is proved to come from a Maurer-Cartan element in the oriented graph complex. The fourth chapter also deals with deformation quantization of (quasi-)Poisson structures in the infinite dimensional setting. Unlike the previous chapter, the methods used here are purely algebraic. Our main theorem is the possibility to deformation quantize quasi-Poisson structures by only using perturbative methods; in contrast to the transcendental methods employed in the previous chapter. We give two proofs of the theorem via the theory of dg operads, dg properads and dg props. We show that there is a dg prop morphism from a prop governing star-products to a dg prop(erad) governing (quasi-)Poisson structures. This morphism gives a theorem about the existence of a deformation quantization of (quasi-)Poisson structure. The proof proceeds by giving an explicit deformation quantization of super-involutive Lie bialgebras and then lifting that to the dg properad governing quasi-Poisson structures. The prop governing star-products was first considered by S.A. Merkulov, but the properad governing quasi-Poisson structures is a new construction. The second proof of the theorem employs the Merkulov-Willwacher polydifferential functor to transfer the problem of finding a morphism of dg props to that of finding a morphism of dg operads. We construct an extension of the well known operad of A∞ algebras such that the representations of it in V are equivalent to an A∞ structure on V[[ħ]]. This new operad is also a minimal model of an operad that can be seen as the extension of the operad of associative algebras by a unary operation. We give an explicit map of operads from the extended associative operad to the operad we get when applying the Merkulov-Willwacher polydifferential functor to the properad of super-involutive Lie bialgebras. Lifting this map so as to go between their respective models gives a new proof of the main theorem.

Corino, Gianni. "Internet of props : a performative ontology and design framework for the Internet of Things." Thesis, University of Plymouth, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/10026.1/9511.

Full text
Abstract:
Set in the relatively new and fast developing field of investigation known as Internet of Things (IoT), this research starts by looking at the lack of critical and conceptual reflection on the area. With a main research question that challenges the underlying concepts of the IoT, the study develops a performative design framework to critique the field of investigation. The main corpus consists of: 1. speculative inquiry into the ontological dualisms of ‘objects’ and ‘things’ and the emerging social dimension of humans and non-humans; 2. the identification of an ontological-performative model based on the idea of Props; 3. the entanglement of theory and practice to construct a performative design framework, called the Internet of Props, which includes: an enabling platform (Smarter Planet Lab) and a set of design strategies (Transactional Props) to demonstrate and evaluate this model and framework; 4. a combined-evaluation conversational analysis methodology that assesses the performativity of the setting and the Props, through linguistic and socio-behavioural studies. Inspired by the concepts of ontological theatre, the entanglement of humans and non-humans, and the Internet of People; the IoT is imagined and performed in a theory-driven, practice-based investigation of the Internet of Props, which aims to bring new theoretical and practical knowledge for the future of the IoT.

Hicks, Emma Edith. "Shifting currents, hidden knots: Talking the scene." Thesis, The University of Sydney, 2017. http://hdl.handle.net/2123/17463.

Full text
Abstract:
Shifting currents, hidden knots: Talking the scene explores a collection of evolving relationships informed by a joint purchase (between myself and fellow collaborator Katie Louise Williams) of an umbilical cord prop from the American television series The X-Files in 2013. The umbilical cord prop has become the catalyst for the connective links drawn throughout the scope of this thesis and is reflected through an enquiry that engages in multiple temporalities and the threads that connect them to a knowledge system. In order to examine the meaning-making paradigms that structure my engagement with the cord, emphasis is placed on process, the way the threads come together and in some instances, belong together. Structural linkages occur whereby places and spaces are related between not only humans and environments, but also objects, including inanimate ones. The cord informs a theoretical inquiry into such connectedness. Using both Indigenous frameworks of knowing which include intuition, reciprocity and responsiveness to environment, as well as western critical theories centred around film, performance and objects, I bring together both relations to objects and relations to people as crucial issues to explore. The case studies woven throughout this thesis represent not only a small collection of evolving relationships, but also collaborative art practices that are under continuous construction. In working towards a more participatory means of knowledge production it is essential that such an inquiry is able to develop without being restricted to a singular mode of knowing. Accordingly, this thesis includes a combination of narrative, co-authored texts, personal anecdote and theoretical emphasis to open up a certain discursive space, where the knowledge I am uncovering exists. In moving away from a more traditional art practice, which is confined to a contained studio practice, to one which is more responsive to social situations and histories; the writing of this thesis is a manifestation of my artistic practice and vice versa. It is a reciprocal movement that is under constant re-negotiation in order to form a connected whole.

Abstract:
PROPS is a project management model that Ericsson developed during the eighties. Itsmain purpose is to give guidelines on how to proceed during different projects. Todaythere is no specific method that complements it when implementing standardsystems. Astandardsystem is one kind of IT-solution, software, which can be used directly. Usuallyit takes some adjustments within the system and company operations to get a workingsolution. The purpose of the study is to find out if VFS (Välja och Förvalta standardsystemmetoden)could be a complement to PROPS. A study of literature was done to extracttheoretical base knowledge. The comparison between the two methods was done on thebasis of general criterions of project management. Criterions in use: Planning, strategy, goal, budget, risks and reports. The study limits its aspects on the primary goals of PROPS and the implementation ofstandardsystems. The study shows that based on the above criterions VFS is a sufficent complement toPROPS. With some adjustments on VFS it could fit PROPS better.

Abstract:
In the so-called postmodern era, when networked media are increasingly ubiquitous in everyday life, where the ‘real’ and the ‘simulation’ become ever more indistinguishable; the physical and virtual intertwine; machines and man merge, and audience and stars transpose. To understand consumption in a time when realness and authenticity are no longer relevant, this thesis draws attention to the consumption and production of media content through case studies of consumer participation and social trends in Japan. The work begins in a themed shopping mall, Venus Fort in Tokyo Bay; continues with the reproduction of Audrey Hepburn‘s image; expands to the dramatised ‘realness’ of television; and finally moves to the omnipresent mobile phone and the impact of networked personal media on our idea of the ‘real’. First, through an analysis of a themed consumption environment, it is suggested that a transition is taking place in consumption from objects to experiences, services and spectacle. Secondly, by showing Audrey Hepburn‘s transition from a Hollywood star to a virtualised idol, technologically-aided illusions are shown to make hierarchical realness irrelevant. Thirdly, via Reality TV dating programs, the focus shifts to the role of audience participation in the consumption of media content. These themes are demonstrated individually, then merged into the last example – the social and cultural evolution induced by the mass consumption of networked media, that promise to revolutionise the way we consume, communicate and connect between people, machines and consumer goods. The thesis grounds its analysis of contemporary trends in the culture of consumption in Japan in theories of commodity and culture, the real and the simulation, speed and reality, the spectacle and the self in mediated spaces, and probes further into the collapse of demarcations between the virtual and the real, the event and the everyday and media and the self in the network society

Abstract:
The basis for this candidate essay is that the built environment affects our lives and our freedom of action. The built environment can facilitate or limit different types of activities. Play is one of the most basic things in our social development and is part of the social interaction with other people. The play is often associated with children, but the play is as important for all age groups. The purpose of this study is to investigate how the built environment can support the opportunity for play to establish itself in one place. We investigate to what extent you can plan and control the play and what play can supply to a Million Programme area. Many of the Million Programme areas that were built in Sweden during the 1960s and 70s are often problematic and the built environment suffers from deferred maintenance. The area Gårdsten in Gothenburg is an area that has undergone renovation projects with a focus on sustainability issues, with social issues in the main focus. We have conducted a case study of the area and through analysis evaluated how the built environment can create conditions for play.

Abstract:
Using the 2014 State of the Union Address as an example, I show that the public honoring of physically wounded veterans hides the emotional, psychological, social, and moral wounds of military service, creating a normative veteran identity based on mental toughness, and essentializes all veterans as honorable by default. Using Michel Foucault’s notion of Panopticism from Discipline and Punish, I argue that this unquestioned heroism of the veteran disciplines the nation, disengages the population from involvement, and enables unchecked, perpetual war. In response, I propose that we avoid thanking veterans publicly and abstractly, instead approaching each and every veteran personally in full recognition of their unique set of relations. This would improve veteran reintegration, politically engage the population in discourse regarding military conflict, and ultimately serve as a check on the use of state violence.

Ohayon, Jonathan. "Quantification des sous-algèbres de Lie coisotropes." Thesis, Montpellier 2, 2012. http://www.theses.fr/2012MON20040/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The aim of this thesis is the study of quantization of coisotropic Lie subalgebras of Lie bialgebras.A coisotropic Lie subalgebra of a Lie bialgebra is a Lie subalgebra which is also a Lie coideal. The problem of quantization of coisotropic Lie subalgebra was set forth by V. Drinfeld, in his study of quantization of Poisson homogeneous spaces G/C. These problems are closely related to the duality principle established by N. Ciccoli and F. Gavarini. In this thesis, we search for an answer to this quantization problem in different settings. Firstly, we show that a quantization exists for simple Lie bialgebras by constructing a quantization of examples provided by M. Zambon. We then establish a link between the quantization which we constructed and a classification of subalgebras right coideals established by I. Heckenberger and S. Kolb. Secondly, we find an obstruction to the quantization in the universal setting by using a third-order quantization constructed by V. Drinfeld. We show that this obstruction vanishes in the examples studied earlier. Finally, we generalize a result of P. Etingof and D. Kazhdan on the quantization of poisson homogeneous spaces, linked to Lagrangian Lie subalgebras of Drinfeld's double

One aspect coming into focus is children’s experiences in general rather than only those which take place within institutional walls. One way children introduce their out-of-school experiences into classrooms is by voluntarily bringing treasured objects from home to early childhood setting doors. By jointly engaging with John Dewey’s view that worthwhile educational experiences are developed through interactions and continuities, the pedagogic practices of twelve early childhood practitioners and the view that each child-initiated object episode could be viewed as part of a child’s experience this research aims to better understand practitioners’ development of educational experiences through their responses to the objects forty children voluntarily brought to school. In support of this aim three research questions focused on 1) what objects children brought? 2) what practitioners said and did with the objects? and 3) what practice similarities and differences were visible across two consecutive age groups: 3-5 year olds in a nursery (preschool) and 5-7 year olds in a composite Primary 1/2 class (formal schooling)? During an eight month period in 2009 data were collected by classroom observations, collection of photographic images and practitioner interviews in a government-funded, denominational, early childhood setting in a Scottish village school. Data were analysed for the physical and social properties of children’s objects, practitioner’s pedagogic practices when engaging with the brought-in objects and similarities and differences in object-related classroom behaviours as epitomised in the relationships in each classroom. The findings were that practitioners made use of three main pedagogical practices when engaging with children’s brought-in objects: transforming objects into educational resources, shaping in-school object experiences and building a range of relationships around these objects. While the broad patterns of practice used in both classrooms were similar the details of practice showed underlying framings of children and their futures were different in each classroom. It is argued that what Dewey’s views offer, in the context of these findings, is a theoretical framing of experience that opens new possibilities for practitioner’s individual and group reflections on their current practices and collaborative practice development. His is one of the languages of experience available as practitioners and policy makers around the world grapple with educational questions.

Cordier, Marie. "Outdoor bronze conservation: assessment of protective treatments by accelerated aging and of treatment removal procedures by laser cleaning." Master's thesis, Alma Mater Studiorum - Università di Bologna, 2013. http://amslaurea.unibo.it/5731/.

Full text
Abstract:
Outdoor bronzes exposed to the environment form naturally a layer called patina, which may be able to protect the metallic substrate. However, since the last century, with the appearance of acid rains, a strong change in the nature and properties of the copper based patinas occurred [1]. Studies and general observations have established that bronze corrosion patinas created by acid rain are not only disfiguring in terms of loss of detail and homogeneity, but are also unstable [2]. The unstable patina is partially leached away by rainwater. This leaching is represented by green streaking on bronze monuments [3]. Because of the instability of the patina, conservation techniques are usually required. On a bronze object exposed to the outdoor environment, there are different actions of the rainfall and other atmospheric agents as a function of the monument shape. In fact, we recognize sheltered and unsheltered areas as regards exposure to rainwater [4]. As a consequence of these different actions, two main patina types are formed on monuments exposed to the outdoor environment. These patinas have different electrochemical, morphological and compositional characteristics [1]. In the case of sheltered areas, the patina contains mainly copper products, stratified above a layer strongly enriched in insoluble Sn oxides, located at the interface with the uncorroded metal. Moreover, different colors of the patina result from the exposure geometry. The surface color may be pale green for unsheltered areas, and green and mat black for sheltered areas [4]. Thus, in real outdoor bronze monuments, the corrosion behavior is strongly influenced by the exposure geometry. This must be taken into account when designing conservation procedures, since the patina is in most cases the support on which corrosion inhibitors are applied. Presently, for protecting outdoor bronzes against atmospheric corrosion, inhibitors and protective treatments are used. BTA and its derivatives, which are the most common inhibitors used for copper and its alloy, were found to be toxic for the environment and human health [5, 6]. Moreover, it has been demonstrated that BTA is efficient when applied on bare copper but not as efficient when applied on bare bronze [7]. Thus it was necessary to find alternative compounds. Silane-based inhibitors (already successfully tested on copper and other metallic substrates [8]), were taken into consideration as a non-toxic, environmentally friendly alternative to BTA derivatives for bronze protection. The purpose of this thesis was based on the assessment of the efficiency of a selected compound, to protect the bronze against corrosion, which is the 3-mercapto-propyl-trimethoxy-silane (PropS-SH). It was selected thanks to the collaboration with the Corrosion Studies Centre “Aldo Daccò” at the Università di Ferrara. Since previous studies [9, 10, 11] demonstrated that the addition of nanoparticles to silane-based inhibitors leads to an increase of the protective efficiency, we also wanted to evaluate the influence of the addition of CeO2, La2O3, TiO2 nanoparticles on the protective efficiency of 3-mercapto-propyl-trimethoxy-silane, applied on pre-patinated bronze surfaces. This study is the first section of the thesis. Since restorers have to work on patinated bronzes and not on bare metal (except for contemporary art), it is important to be able to recreate the patina, under laboratory conditions, either in sheltered or unsheltered conditions to test the coating and to obtain reliable results. Therefore, at the University of Bologna, different devices have been designed to simulate the real outdoor conditions and to create a patina which is representative of real application conditions of inhibitor or protective treatments. In particular, accelerated ageing devices by wet & dry (simulating the action of stagnant rain in sheltered areas [12]) and by dropping (simulating the leaching action of the rain in unsheltered areas [1]) tests were used. In the present work, we used the dropping test as a method to produce pre-patinated bronze surfaces for the application of a candidate inhibitor as well as for evaluating its protective efficiency on aged bronze (unsheltered areas). In this thesis, gilded bronzes were also studied. When they are exposed to the outside environment, a corrosion phenomenon appears which is due to the electrochemical couple gold/copper where copper is the anode. In the presence of an electrolyte, this phenomenon results in the formation of corrosion products than will cause a blistering of the gold (or a break-up and loss of the film in some cases). Moreover, because of the diffusion of the copper salts to the surface, aggregates and a greenish film will be formed on the surface of the sample [13]. By coating gilded samples with PropS-SH and PropS-SH containing nano-particles and carrying out accelerated ageing by the dropping test, a discussion is possible on the effectiveness of this coating, either with nano-particles or not, against the corrosion process. This part is the section 2 of this thesis. Finally, a discussion about laser treatment aiming at the assessment of reversibility/re-applicability of the PropS-SH coating can be found in section 3 of this thesis. Because the protective layer loses its efficiency with time, it is necessary to find a way of removing the silane layer, before applying a new one on the “bare” patina. One request is to minimize the damages that a laser treatment would create on the patina. Therefore, different laser fluences (energy/surface) were applied on the sample surface during the treatment process in order to find the best range of fluence. In particular, we made a characterization of surfaces before and after removal of PropS-SH (applied on a naturally patinated surface, and subsequently aged by natural exposure) with laser methods. The laser removal treatment was done by the CNR Institute of Applied Physics “Nello Carrara” of Sesto Fiorentino in Florence. In all the three sections of the thesis, a range of non-destructive spectroscopic methods (Scanning Electron Microscopy with Energy Dispersive Spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), μ-Raman spectroscopy, X-Ray diffractometry (XRD)) were used for characterizing the corroded surfaces. AAS (Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy) was used to analyze the ageing solutions from the dropping test in sections 1 and 2.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the nature of the projects has changed to be unique, uncertain, ambiguous, complex and innovative. It becomes hard to plan in advance the project progress, asdeviations from plans and unpredictable changes occur more frequently. This can bespecifically observed in the software development industry which needs to constantlymeet customers’ rapidly changed requirements. Traditionally, software projects aredeveloped through a plan-driven approach which emphasizes an overall project plan andcontrol process in terms of project management. Recently, this has been challenged byagile approach that focuses on flexibility to quickly meet changing requirements, andthese new agile methods provoked huge interest and got more and more popular andwidely applied especially in IT industry. However, the popularity does not mean theagile methods have advantage over traditional plan-based project management methods. In fact, both methods have own advantages and disadvantages and cannot be fullyreplaced by each other. Therefore, it becomes important and necessary for companymanagement to know how to select a suitable method for the new software developmentproject to get the maximum benefits. The purpose of this study is to describe different project management methods(traditional plan-driven and agile methods) and their various consequences for themanagement of software-development projects. Additionally, a more practical purposeis to suggest on what grounds a choice between methods may be made. Morespecifically, this research aims to provide the possible solution on how to selecttraditional plan-driven or agile project management method for managing a newsoftware development project. The research conducted a qualitative study in a casecompany of IT industry through several semi-structured interviews and questionnaireswith experienced and knowledgeable employees. It started with the analysis andcomparison of traditional and agile project management methods’ characteristics andapplication domains based on two specific examples (PROPS and Scrum) selected fromtraditional and agile project management methods respectively, in order to identify a setof preliminary outstanding characteristics which could be used to help IT company tochoose project management methods for new software development projects. Theempirical data obtained from interviews of case company was investigated to verifythese characteristics based on the literature review, and further adjusted thecharacteristics identification. After going through the whole research process, finallyresearchers identified the most suitable characteristics that were important both intheory and practice to examine on what ground a software development company needsto base the selection of project management methods. These suitable characteristics are:Project Complexity, Communication, Competencies and Requirements, in order to helpselect the best management way for the specific project.

Abstract:
String diagrams turn algebraic equations into topological moves that have recurring shapes, involving the sliding of one diagram past another. We individuate, at the root of this fact, the dual nature of polygraphs as presentations of higher algebraic theories, and as combinatorial descriptions of "directed spaces". Operations of polygraphs modelled on operations of topological spaces are used as the foundation of a compositional universal algebra, where sliding moves arise from tensor products of polygraphs. We reconstruct several higher algebraic theories in this framework. In this regard, the standard formalism of polygraphs has some technical problems. We propose a notion of regular polygraph, barring cell boundaries that are not homeomorphic to a disk of the appropriate dimension. We define a category of non-degenerate shapes, and show how to calculate their tensor products. Then, we introduce a notion of weak unit to recover weakly degenerate boundaries in low dimensions, and prove that the existence of weak units is equivalent to a representability property. We then turn to applications of diagrammatic algebra to quantum theory. We re-evaluate the category of Hilbert spaces from the perspective of categorical universal algebra, which leads to a bicategorical refinement. Then, we focus on the axiomatics of fragments of quantum theory, and present the ZW calculus, the first complete diagrammatic axiomatisation of the theory of qubits. The ZW calculus has several advantages over ZX calculi, including a computationally meaningful normal form, and a fragment whose diagrams can be read as setups of fermionic oscillators. Moreover, its generators reflect an operational classification of entangled states of 3 qubits. We conclude with generalisations of the ZW calculus to higher-dimensional systems, including the definition of a universal set of generators in each dimension.

Abstract:
This thesis aims to investigate the relationships between theatrical props, actors and sound engineers through the posthumanistic perspective of agential realism. I also explore the phenomena that emerge from these relationships. What happens when sensors are implemented in the prop in order for the actors themselves to trigger certain sound effects from the stage? To investigate this, I have developed prototypes of theater props with sensors and thus in some sense given the objects a voice of their own. This contributes to them participating in the dialogue with the people in a performance, while at the same time changing the interplay between actors and the sound engineer. Through the different iterations of the process, the division between subject and object has become increasingly unclear, just like the one between the different roles. In some sense, the actor becomes an audio engineer, as both the prop and the audio engineer in turn become actors.

Abstract:
In fifth-century Athens, tragic dramatists were responsible for the whole production of their plays, from plot-writing to casting, musical composition to choreography, staging to actor’s direction – performance was therefore an essential part of their work. Materialized by props on stage, objects are things with which the characters interact and a potential source of scenic effects. Swords, shields, vases, funerary urns, beds or even wheeled chariots, among many other objects, are mentioned in the extant tragedies and invested with dramatic function and symbolic meaning. Emblematic objects give an insight into the status and ethos of the characters; as instruments, objects are a means to achieve a goal, but they might resist to the characters’ intentions. All of them contribute to characterize them as tragic heroes. Therefore, this dissertation aims to show that the object can be considered as a principle of dramatic composition and of construction of the performance in Greek tragedy; it also questions the existence of a thought or an imagination of the relationships between human beings and objects, animate and inanimate, in the tragic plays. Looking at the whole corpus of extant tragedies by Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides (including the most significative fragments), this work describes the specific dramaturgy of the object developed by each poet to translate into visual and dynamic terms a tragic vision

Snow White through Grimm and Disney - A Comparative Study This essay attempts to discern the differences regarding six Swedish versions of the fairy-tale Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs over a period of 150 years. Focus is placed on structural transformations through time and media according to the analytical theories of Vladimir Propp. Attention is also given to former research done on the impact of the fairy-tale on the child from a psychological and social point of view. Of interest is the historical background of the tale, commencing with oral tradition, and how this was dealt with by the Grimm brothers. Three of the versions used for this comparative study are variants of the Grimm tale, and three belong to Walt Disney productions, i.e. the film and its picture stories. The aim of the comparison is to clarify how and why this tale is retained to the present.

Abstract:
Aquest treball presenta algunes contribucions a aquest tema.
Large interconnection or communication networks are usually designed and studied by using techniques from graph theory. This work presents some contributions to this subject. With this aim, two new operations are proposed: the "hierarchical product" of graphs and the "Manhattan product" of digraphs. The former can be seen as a generalization of the Cartesian product of graphs and allows us to construct some interesting families with a high degree of hierarchy, such as the well-know binomial tree, which is a data structure very used in the context of computer science. The latter yields, in particular, the known topologies of Manhattan Street Networks, which has been widely studied and used for modelling some classes of light-wave networks. In this thesis, a multidimensional approach is analyzed. Several properties of the graphs or digraphs obtained by both operations are dealt with, but special attention is paid to the study of their structural parameters (operation properties, induced subdigraphs, degree distribution and line digraph structure), metric parameters (diameter, radius and mean distance), symmetry (automorphism groups and Cayley digraphs), cycle structure (Hamilton cycles and arc-disjoint Hamiltonian decomposition) and spectral properties (eigenvalues and eigenvectors). For instance, with respect to the last issue, it is shown that some families of hypertrees have spectra with all different eigenvalues "filling up" all the real line. Moreover, we show the relationship between its eigenvector set and Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind. Also some protocols of communication, such as local routing and broadcasting algorithms, are addressed. Finally, some deterministic models (Sierpinsky networks and others) having similar properties as some real complex networks, such as the Internet, are presented.

Yalin, Sinan. "Théorie de l'homotopie des algèbres sur un PROP." Thesis, Lille 1, 2013. http://www.theses.fr/2013LIL10051/document.

Full text
Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to set up a general homotopy theory for categories of differential graded bialgebras. A first part is devoted to the case of bialgebras defined by a pair of operads in distribution. Classical bialgebras, Lie bialgebras and Poisson bialgebras provide examples of such bialgebra structures. The main result of this part asserts that the category of bialgebras associated to a pair of operads in distribution inherits a model category structure. The notion of a PROP provides a setting for the study of general bialgebras structures, involving operations with multiple inputs and multiple outputs as generators of the structure, in contrast to operads in distribution which only encode operations with either one single input or one single output. PROPs form a category, in which one can define a notion of cofibrant object with good homotopical properties. The second part of the thesis is devoted to the homotopy theory of bialgebras over a PROP. The main result of the thesis asserts that the categories of bialgebras associated to weakly equivalent cofibrant props have equivalent homotopy categories. We actually prove a more precise theorem asserting that this equivalence holds at the level of a simplicial localization of the categories. Our theorem implies that the category of bialgebras associated to a cofibrant resolution of a given PROP P defines a notion of bialgebra up to homotopy over P independent of the choice of the resolution, and enables us to give a sense to homotopical realization problems in this setting

The twentieth century saw the birth of a new paradigm in the social sciences: the Structuralism. The name V. I. Propp appears in the thread of this history, especially in the linguistics, as one of the pioneers of the structural method, because he found in the study of Russian folktales their structure and the minimum unities of analysis, in other words, the thirty-one functions and the seven spheres of action. His work Morphology of Folktale was published in 1928 in Russia, but remained forgotten for thirty years. In 1958, it was brought back to the surface by the north-American translation, drawing the researchers’ attention, among them Lévi-Strauss who would make it famous among the French and after, around the world. This work, through the Linguistic Historiography searches the reception of Propp’s readers. These commentators and followers allow the recovery of the socio-historical construction of the monument and to determine if the construction happened due to the perspective of methodological rupture.

Cuppett, Jonathan David. "Evaluating factors that affect copper tasting sensitivity in drinking water." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 2005. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/32991.

Full text
Abstract:
Corrosion of household copper plumbing infrastructure can cause pipe failure and lead to elevated levels of copper in drinking water which can exceed the USEPA health based standard for copper in drinking water of 1.3 mg/L Cu. The purpose of this study was to determine taste thresholds of copper in different types of water, analyze how copper chemistry can affect tasting, determine if common disinfectants influence the taste of copper and evaluate genetic links to copper sensitivity. A one-out-of-five test was used to define thresholds, evaluate disinfectant influences, and examine copper chemistry differences. A difference from control test was used to analyze soluble copper tasting and a one solution test with visual classification was used to discriminate 6-n-propylthiouracil (PROP) taster status.

Solutions containing copper sulfate (0.05 â 8 mg/l Cu) were prepared in distilled water, mineral water of varying pH and mineral water with disinfectant added. Geometric mean copper taste thresholds were 0.48 mg Cu/l and 0.41mg Cu/l in distilled and mineral water pH 7.4 respectively. Logistic regression copper taste thresholds were 1.50 mg Cu/l and 1.96 mg Cu/l in distilled and mineral water pH 7.4 respectively. Soluble copper was readily tasted while particulate copper was poorly tasted. Chlorine and chloramines dosed at typical tap water levels had no significant effect on panelistsâ tasting abilities for water containing 1 mg/l total copper. Geometric mean copper thresholds values did not correlate with (PROP) status so PROP sensitivity would not be a good indicator for copper sensitivity.

This TCF presents a proposal to read the wonderful tales from some of the basic stages and functions of this genre, according to the morphology of Propp (2006), making possible the changes of the roles of the classic protagonists and antagonists. Our objective is to perform a subjective re-reading and later rewriting, with the aid of the identification of some narrative stages of the fairy tales, both in the written text and in its adaptation to the audiovisual language. This research was driven by the observation of the reality of literature teaching in elementary school, in which the deficiency is perceived in relation to strategies of literary reading and multiletration in Portuguese language classes. Methodologically, we explore some concepts proposed by Vladimir Propp's studies of the wonderful tale; as regards the issue of literary reading, we apply some aspects of the receptional and semiological methods proposed by Bordini & Aguiar (1988). From the fusion of these two perspectives, we propose a practice of comparative reading of traditional wonderful stories and the re-reading of them in audiovisual adaptations (cinema). In order to do so, we make use of other theoretical contributions of foundation, with particular emphasis to: Campos (2003), Colomer (2007), Coutinho (2006), Cruz (2012), Estés (2005), Gomes (2014), Rojo & Moura 2012), Rouxel (2013), Silva (2006, 2009), Zilberman (1982). This proposal for intervention results in a pedagogical book, with multimodal literary reading workshops, culminating in the production of retellings of fairy tales. From the analysis of the data collection and the results of this research, we suggest a method of literary reading that allows any teacher to use it in their classes, putting the multissemy of the contemporary world and the narrative corpus of wonderful tales in the service of the formation of readers and producers of literary texts.

Abstract:
Potential reduced exposure products (PREPs) are marketed to reduce smoking’s harm, despite little information concerning their effects. This study adapts previously reported clinical laboratory methods used to evaluate combustible PREPs to investigate the acute effects of four non-combustible PREPs (Ariva, Camel Snus, Marlboro Snus, Commit nicotine lozenge) relative to own brand cigarettes, sham smoking, and one combustible PREP that delivers no measurable nicotine (Quest). Twenty-eight smokers participated in 7 Latin-squared ordered, 2.5-hr sessions in which each product was administered twice (60-minute inter-administration interval). Sessions differed by product and were separated by > 48 hours. Plasma nicotine, heart rate, expired air carbon monoxide (CO), and subjective effects were assessed. Relative to own brand, non-combustible PREPs decreased nicotine and CO exposure, did not suppress abstinence symptoms fully, and were less acceptable. These short-term clinical laboratory methods are reliable and provide valuable information concerning non-combustible PREPs for smokers.

Abstract:

Sweden's government says in the bill 2008/09: 140 that military service should be suspended and replaced with a system based on voluntary recruitment. In the essay, I will make an argument analysis of the parliamentary debate on the bill from the 12th of June 2009 with the following questions: On what is the different side’s argument based on? Are the arguments essentially and factually substantiated? Is there a clear political party tendency among the for-/counter arguments? The method is a "Pro et contra" analysis, a logical systematization of the arguments. The analysis will take start in the headline; Conscription should be suspended in favour of a voluntary system based on contract employed soldiers. The presentation of arguments in the analysis will be guided by the chronological order. The main argument against the bill is a belief that this system will generate greater costs. Furthermore, results from studies performed on other countries that have recently changed from compulsory military service to contract employed soldiers shows difficulties in recruiting and retaining staff in a voluntary system. Moreover it is noted that the increase in battle readiness that this new system means, would be completely unjustified in view of prevailing threats against Sweden. Finally, it is argued that the common support is at risk when Sweden's defence affairs no longer become an obligation for every individual to contribute. The arguments for the bill believe that we need forces that are fit to use and available, to meet the new threats that is emerging and in which Sweden's participation in international missions is the focal point. The conflict in the debate is based mostly in the ideological distinctions and as a result of these also economic contradictions. As a direct consequence of this, most of the arguments are not substantiated with facts. However, there is traceability to arguments that historically have been used to justify the introduction of either of the systems. There is a clear party political tendency in the debate. Government parties stay united and the opposition parties are slightly more dispersed in their argumentation but still against the bill.

Griffin, Laura E. "The Influence of Dietary Flavanol Mean Degrees of Polymerization on Sensory Preference Trends and the Metabolic Syndrome." Diss., Virginia Tech, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/86238.

Full text
Abstract:
According to the Centers for Disease Control, roughly 9.4% of the US population is diabetic, and at least 35% of the US population has metabolic syndrome. These diseases are associated with increased mortality risk, reduced quality of life, and altered taste perception of foods. With increased occurrence of these metabolic diseases, there is a greater need for research oriented towards using lifestyle modifications to combat illness. A relationship between flavanol consumption, health benefits, and taste perception has been well documented. Dietary flavanols are secondary plant metabolites that exist naturally in a wide array of polymerization states. The mechanisms behind the protective effects of flavanols are not entirely understood, particularly when considering how the mean degrees of polymerization (mDP), or average compound size, impacts the health benefits. Moreover, it is known that flavanol mDP influences the sensory attributes of flavanol-rich foods including bitterness and astringency. It is known that obesity and sensitivity to bitterness both influence perception of certain taste attributes such as sweetness and bitterness. The influence of these bitter and astringent sensations determined by flavanol mDP on consumer preferences for flavanol-rich products remains unknown. These influences on preference pose potential barriers to consumption, resulting in the loss of health benefits. The objectives of the research detailed here were i) to determine the effect of dietary consumption of small to medium-sized flavanols on markers of metabolic syndrome that were brought on by diet-induced obesity, ii) to determine how flavanol mDP influences the consumer perception and liking of flavanol-rich, wine-like products based on differences in consumer phenotype, and iii) to explore the potential to manipulate mDP of wine using traditional winemaking techniques. By way of an in vivo mouse model, it was observed that regardless of mDP, flavanols delivered at low dose, as part of a high-fat diet, reduced adipose-derived inflammatory cytokine production but did not prevent associated weight and fat gain. This suggests that small to medium sized flavanols may, at low dose, delay the onset of the pro-inflammatory state, which could ultimately protect against metabolic derangements associated with obesity and diabetes. Regarding the consumer acceptance of wine-like products made from flavanols of different mDP, and therefore different in bitterness and astringency intensity, it was observed in a consumer panel (n = 102) that when segmenting the panelists by body fat % and BMI classification, increased adiposity was associated with decreased ability to differentiate wine samples made with flavanols of different mDP. Moreover, differences in liking and ability to differentiate bitterness and astringency intensities were not as pronounced when segmenting the panelists based on bitterness sensitivity. This suggests that obesity may impact preference for flavanol-rich foods more so than sensitivity to flavor attributes associated with these products. Finally, in an exploratory effort to manipulate mDP of red and rosé wines using traditional winemaking techniques, no differences in mDP were observed in young wines, but significant differences in flavanol concentration were detected. It is hypothesized that aging of these wines could lead to greater differences in mDP, especially for those that had a high flavanol concentration at baseline. Future work will continue to build off these studies so that flavanol-rich products such as red wine can be optimized for health benefits and consumer acceptability of dietary polyphenols.
Ph. D.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, roughly 9.4% of the US population is diabetic, and at least 35% of the US population has metabolic syndrome. These diseases are associated with increased mortality risk, reduced quality of life, and altered taste perception for certain food types. With increased occurrence of these metabolic diseases, there is a greater need for research oriented towards using lifestyle modifications to combat illness. Dietary flavanols, which are potent antioxidants derived from plants, are being explored for their ability to mitigate chronic disease. They exist naturally in a wide variety of sizes and structures depending on plant of origin, growing conditions, and food processing conditions. It is believed that the size of these compounds impacts their health effects and influences their taste profile; smaller compounds are more bitter while larger compounds are more astringent. The purpose of this research was to determine the effect of flavanol supplementation on markers of the metabolic syndrome and how differences in taste due to differences in flavanol size influence consumer liking and perception of winelike products. It was determined in this study that dietary flavanols, delivered at low dose in the context of a high-fat diet can slightly improve fasting blood glucose levels and prevent inflammation. When examining consumer preferences for wines made from dietary flavanols that are distinctly different in terms of bitterness and astringency, it was determined that overall, consumers liked wines that were less intense in terms of bitterness and astringency. However, when examining consumers classified as having a high body fat percentage or high BMI, their ability to differentiate the wines was decreased compared to lean counterparts. These findings suggest that dietary flavanol supplementation at a physiologically relevant dose may improve symptoms of diabetes and metabolic syndrome. Future work confirming these observations in humans is warranted, as are studies devoted to better understanding of the taste preferences of the obese population. This will allow for optimization of flavanol-rich foods that maximize health benefit while also being palatable to consumers.

Abstract:

The digital games take an increasing part of our western society. The time when gaming was excluded to the most frantic computer fans is long gone. Today the gaming industry competes with both the film- and music industry for the consumers’ attention.

Despite this, research regarding the digital games has been put aside for a long time. But there is an ongoing process in establishing game studies regarding content and expression aspects that go beyond the question about possible psychological effects and such. But this process is still young and disagreements occur concerning how the games should be approached as an object of study.

This debate, originating from two different approaches; the narratological and the ludological, has proven to be central to the research society. To reach a better understanding regarding storytelling within the digital games I carried out a narratological analysis of a video game; Shadow of the Colossus for Playstation 2. I used classical narratological tools regarding the syntagmatic structure of storytelling; Propp’s characters and functions and Todorov’s equilibrium formula.

To be able to carry out this analysis the first step was to identify the storytelling elements of the game so that these could be properly recognized. After that the narratological tools were applied to these. In order not to neglect the medium specific characteristics that the digital games hold, I implemented a minor ludological analysis of its rules, to see how these were connected with the potential storytelling.

The narratological analysis proved to be useful; a number of Propp’s functions were identified and the storytelling could also be described on the basis of Todorov’s equilibrium. Furthermore a clear connection between the storytelling of the game and the ludus rules, meaning the rules that define the winning conditions and how to reach them. The classic narratological analysis was fruitful, but the medium specific characteristics with systems of rules and their connection to the storytelling elements proved to be an important relationship to illustrate further.

Abstract:

Abstract:
This essay examines the structural relationship between the folktale and the gothic novel with focus on characterization. This study will present a clearer definition of the now problematized gothic genre and show how newer genres are influenced by the older ones. This examination is done by doing a close-reading of Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto, which is generally known as the first gothic novel, and comparing it to formalist Vladimir Propp’s findings on the functions of the Russian folktale. Walpole’s novel is used as primary source of data and the key works by Propp is utilized as the theoretical framework. In addition, a couple of critical essays have been looked upon in relation to the previous works. This study finds that there are apparent similarities in structure and narrative in the gothic novel in relation to the folktale such as the presence of the same essential characters and functions. This proves the overlap between the two genres and it would be reasonable to conclude that the gothic genre consists of a part folktale. By the revelation of this previously unknown relationship between the folktale and the gothic genre this essay opens up for further research on the origin and influences of gothic fiction.
