Abstract:
With the increase of the proportion of the population reaching retirement age in relation to that of working age, extensive research has been conducted to understand the retirement process and to promote older adults’ well-being in retirement. In this chapter, we aim to link the theoretical concepts of retirement to the research literature on prosocial behavior. First, we provide an overview of the current conceptualizations of prosocial behavior and retirement. Second, we introduce three main areas of prosocial behavior engagement in retirement (i.e., prosocial behavior in postretirement employment, in the family context, and in the community). Third, we present a comprehensive model of the antecedents and outcomes of prosocial behavior in retirement, covering factors at the micro, meso, and macro levels. Finally, we offer suggestions to advance future research investigating prosocial behavior in retirement.

Abstract:
Aristotle said that humans are social animals; humans may also be described as prosocial animals. The chapter discusses prosocial tendencies as a core attribute of human psychological functioning and posits these tendencies as central to the human essence. Human prosocial behavior resides in the complex interconnections among factors affecting our prosocial lives. Penner, Dovidio, Piliavin, and Schroeder (2005) proposed a multi-level approach identifying not only types of prosocial behaviors but also the processes that motivate and regulate acts that benefit others. They structured the prosocial behavior domain hierarchically into three levels that provide mutually supportive, coherent, and comprehensive explanations for prosocial actions and a scaffolding for them that can be linked horizontally within and vertically between levels to provide an integrative “prosocial matrix.” Thus a consilience of prosociality emerges that suggests something unique about the human inclination to benefit others, supporting prosociality as an essential quality of being human.

Abstract:
In this chapter, we distinguish between different forms of empathy-related responding (i.e., empathy, sympathy, personal distress) and prosocial behavior. The capacity for empathy and sympathy emerges in the early years of life and generally increases with age across childhood. Individual differences in sympathy and prosocial behavior covary, and both tend to be fairly stable across time. Prosocial tendencies are related to prosocial moral reasoning, social competence, self-regulation, and low aggression/externalizing problems. Although individual differences in prosocial and empathic/sympathetic responding are partly due to heredity, environmental factors are also associated with such differences. Authoritative, supportive parenting involving modeling, reasoning, and practices that help children to understand others’ internal states has been associated with higher levels of prosocial behavior. Moreover, securely attached children tend to be prosocial. In addition, peers and siblings can encourage, reinforce, and model prosocial behavior. School interventions, as well as experience with volunteering, appear to affect the degree to which children are sympathetic and engage in prosocial behavior.
