Sleep bruxism and higher clench index have been associated with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, there is no study that reports on the prosthetic complications in patients with OSA. Records of patients who had performed a sleep study to diagnose OSA were examined for the occurrence of prosthetic complications in implant-borne reconstructions. The primary outcome was the frequency of prosthetic complications. The secondary outcomes were anthropometric data, type of complication, type of prosthesis, type of retention, number of supporting implants, number of prosthetic units, and the pres

Prosthetic joint infection is a rare but serious complication of total shoulder replacement. After infection control, shoulder reconstruction is also required to repair the shoulder defect. The shoulder is a complex structure consisting of mechanical soft tissue and the joint, making reconstruction challenging. A 78-year-old female patient was diagnosed of wound necrosis and exposed prosthesis due to prosthetic joint infection after reverse total shoulder replacement. The infection was controlled with appropriate antibiotic treatment, and the necrotic tissue was removed by radical debridement.

Cutting edge computational tools are an important component of the future of tasks such as surgical planning of mitral valve repair and the design and evaluation of prosthetic valves. For example, despite half a century of use, mechanical heart valves still require further research to reduce the non-physiologic nature of the flow field, which is the source of potential medical complications, of which the most serious complication is thrombus formation [1]. In fact, there is still a lack of consensus in the literature about which flow pathologies are the most damaging to blood elements [2, 3].

Abstract:
One of the reasons why oral anticoagulants fell into disrepute is the absence of internationally acceptable standarised procedures for controlling the level of anticoagulation. This deplorable situation resulted in over and under coagulation and uncertainty in the therapeutic range. The International Normalised Ratio (INR) can safely be applied in patients on oral anticoagulants. We present two Groups of patients under long term anti coagulation, mainly because of prosthetic heart valves that have recently been added to our outpatients clinic. These patients were till then attended by two cardi

Introduction: Nipple-sparing mastectomy (NSM) is a conservative mastectomy approach for breast cancer with oncological safety and good aesthetic satisfaction. The initial indications of NSM excluded patients with previous radiation, ptosis, high body mass index (BMI) and macromastia, although these contraindications have been challenged. Different authors expanded the classic indications of NSM for patients with previous breast surgery/irradiation, neoadjuvant chemotherapy, and short tumor-nipple distance and showed safety and low complication rates. However, there are few data about the suita

Introduction: The technique of breast reconstruction using silicone implants is the predominant way for breast reconstruction worldwide. Over the last years there has been a growing interest in performing immediate reconstruction with single stage implantation after mastectomy as an attempt to simplify the reconstruction procedure and improve psychosocial morbidity, as well reducing costs. The reconstruction with single stage suggests a slightly higher complication rate related to implant loss. Objectives: To evaluate the immediate complications (up to 30 days after surgery) and late complicat

Prosthetic heart valves have been used for over 50 years to replace diseased native valves but still lead to severe complications such as platelet aggregation and thromboembolic events. The most widely implanted design is the bileaflet mechanical heart valve (BMHV). Most modern BMHV designs have better flow hemodynamics and blood damage performance than earlier-generation counterparts. However, blood element trauma and thromboembolic events still remain as major complications of current BMHV designs. These problems have been linked to blood damage caused by non-physiological stresses. These st

The human knee is a complex and robust system. It is the most important joint for human gait because of its immense load bearing ability. The loss of such an important joint often makes it difficult for a person to ambulate. Because of this and the resulting unnatural application of forces, many trans-femoral amputees develop an asymmetric gait that leads to future complications. Prosthetic knees are required to be well-designed to cope with all variabilities. There have been many prosthetic knee designs, some more complex than others.
