Abstract:
A great number of workplaces in Russia do not conform to sanitary-hygienic requirements and it results in wide use of personal respiratory protective equipment (PRPE). Choice on such equipment and its application are not regulated by the existing legislation in the RF in great detail as it is the case in developed countries. As a result, employers apply PRPE that is not efficient enough, or such equipment is not used properly, and it leads to diseases occurrence. Our research goal was to reveal requirements to PRPE application which, when met, would reduce risks for workers’ life and health as greatly as it is only possible. Our research object was personal respiratory protective equipment (PRPE). We compared requirements to selecting and applying PRPE in the USA, Australia, Great Britain, Canada, and West Germany and also took into account requirement and experts’ recommendations existing in several other countries. When comparing, we tried to focus on key elements that determined whether PRPE applied in due time was able to prevent exposure to air contamination. Such key elements included choice on PRPE suitable for work under extremely hazardous conditions; permissible application of PRPE with different structure (expected protective efficiency); individual selection and testing whether a mask is fit for a face; timely replacement of respirator filters; requirements to skills of workers and their supervisors. Our research revealed that results of PRPE application and requirements fixed for employers were most comprehensively estimated and well-grounded in the USA. The most favorable situation with quality and availability of materials on how to select and apply PRPE for workers, specialists, and supervisors is also in the USA. Results obtained via the performed comparison allow recommending US Standard 29 CFR 1910.134 as a basis for developing similar requirements in Russia.

Abstract: The purpose of this research was to determine the levels of attenuation of Hearing Protection Devices (HPDs) using a test called Auditory Steady-State Response (ASSR). The ASSR test is an electrophysiological examination that uses electrodes to capture the electrical activity of the auditory nerve and the brainstem without depending on the individual's response, thus eliminating the subjectivity of personal factors such as attention, response time, hearing ability, etc. This paper presents the results of a ten test which evaluated the hearing threshold of individuals, by first stimulating the hearing system without a protector and subsequently with a hearing protector. The results of this study were lower than those expressed in the Certificate of Approval: to plug a gap of 10.3 dB and dB the ear mufflers. The repetition of tests found a good repeatability with a difference between zero and 5 dB for 75% of the frequencies tested.

Abstract: This research is tied to the research line "Formative processes, Difference and Values", that has as main concern the development of interdisciplinary knowledge about teacher's practices and representations, associated with historical, cultural, social and psychological aspects involved in the production of educational practices, and more particularly, with a perspective that values aspects of infant-juvenile sexuality, human development, personal and social risk condition, social and educational inclusion/exclusion and their impacts in the educational process, linked with the studies carried out by the research group "Laboratory of human development" - LDH, at FCT/UNESP. The research has as main purpose to study the perceptions of teenagers, students of public schools in Presidente Prudente, aged between 14 to 18 years old, about the role of the school in their lives. Taking into account the few studies that analyses the construction of resilience in an articulated way with educational process, it is believed that the analysis of the own perspective of the students is needed, if we aim to understand the meanings attributed to the educational process and its impacts into their subjectivity. Our study is helpful since it contributes for the reflection about the ways the school has affected youth's lives, especially of those exposed to adversities and thinking about this institution as an opportune place for the development of resilience among this youth. It was emphasized aspects related to the experiences and relationships established between the teenagers and school professionals and also among peers; teenager's perceptions and feelings about their educational performance; the role of the school in their life projects and their perceptions about the school settings...
Abstract: The concern with UV radiation of the electromagnetic spectrum that reaches the earth's surface has encouraged the research of products for skin protection due to increased rates of skin cancer. This study aims to obtain and study the inorganic filter ZnO:Ti4+ with 1, 5, 10, 20, 40, 50 at% of doping and the association with doped filters developed through organic filter 1 - (4-tert- butyl phenyl) -3 - (4-methoxyphenyl) propane-1 ,3-dione or butyl methoxy dibenzoyl methane (bmdm), trade name Eusolex 9020®. Doped filters were obtained by the sol-gel method, with hydrolysis ratio of 0.1 and 0.01. The samples were characterized by absorption spectroscopy using diffuse reflectance (DR), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, ultraviolet - visible (UV-Vis), X-ray diffraction (XRD), colorimetric and zeta potential measurements. UVA/UVB ratio and critical wavelength were calculated to know the filter's performance in the UVA region. XRD results indicate the ZnO wurtzite phase formation step for doping levels up to 10%. Above this percentage of doping, phases of zinc titanates (Zn2TiO4 and ZnTiO3) we observed. The IR spectra show bands of the metal-oxygen shifted to higher wave numbers and an increasing amount of dopant due to the bond strength and size effects of the titanium ion compared to zinc ion in metaloxygen interactions. The RD spectra show shifts of bands for the visible region. Doped filters were then associated with the bmdm organic filter. The associated filters were characterized by the same techniques just described above. In the IR spectra of the associated filters, there is also the band on the metal-oxygen, splitting and shifting of the band related to the carbonyl group when compared with the free bmdm, that indicates an association between the filters. The absorption bands of doped filters do not cover... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract: The present study investigated the risk factors and the mechanisms of protection in the history of development of sixteen teenagers with diagnoses of mental disrupitions, in medical-psychological attendance in mental health institution. Sixteen case studies were carried out through semi-structured interviews, realizing the survey of demographic data of the teenagers and their parents, dianosis data and the treatment that theycarry out and the identification of the risk factors and mechanisms of protection, besides the classification of its current adaptative capacity, according to the Operationalized Adaptative Diagnosis Scale (OADS). The results allowed the identification of the risk factors and the mechanisms of protection, which seemed themselves consistent with the others found in the literature. The general conditions of the teenagers showed themselves more positive than negative, as well as the adaptative classification that they obtained, unlike what could be expected, according their diagnoses of mental desrupitions. The results indicate the importance of the family and the school relations as development promoters of mechanisms of protection, it also needs to be considered the individual aspects as easy ways or not of development less touchy to the inevitable risks. The adaptative classifications obtained by the interviewed teenagers and the analysis of risk factors and mechanisms of protection identified in their histories of development are in agreement with the pointed out in the literature, indicating the plasticity and flexibility of this process, as well as the difficulties of considering the mental disruptions in the teenage, which the development...
Abstract: Solid waste recycling in Brazil has a prominent position even when compared with more developed countries. The enterprises in our country, of any dimension or type of activity, can maximize this performance by adopting policies that prioritize the transformation of something worthless and useless into secondary raw material. From the point of view of the methodological approach, this work aims to identify, analyze, propose and evaluate the measures adopted by the studied company in the collection of determined waste produced by its activities which can be recycled, instead of being sent to landfills. We have identified the practices applied to the waste, analyzing its adherence to the principles which advocate the objectives of recycling. As a consequence of the results of this analysis, we have developed and implemented a methodology for the selective collection of the waste examined. In this development we have contemplated some features, such as points of waste production, adequacy of the kinds of packing, intern logistics, operational instructions, need of data record and employees and managers training. The following kinds of waste have been chosen to be studied in the implementation of the methodology: aluminum, wavy packing paper (cardboard), plastic in general, polyester tape for packing, steel tape for packing, inox steel, ferrous and non-ferrous metals.Later evaluations have been made aiming to measure the efficacy of the new practices adopted as well as to check the volumes sent to recycling as the result of the selectiveness of the collection and of the interruption of the sending of recyclable waste to landfills. These evaluations presented satisfactory results when compared with the state of the art in the beginning of the work, before the implementation of the selective waste collection procedures. The results show that the excellence level of the work process ... (Complete abstract click electronic access below)

Abstract: Development of products for personal use that follows the anthropomorphic design can not ordinarily be planned with meticulous details for the adjustment to subjects who represent the statistical extremes of anthropometry. Considering this obstacle, the productþs project demands resources that make it possible to hurdle this limitation. The use of material with flexible deforming capacity / capacity of shaping becomes something viable in a sense of adjusting product to user in order to enhance their performance, obtaining higher rates of safety, comfort and personal preference without modifying the basic structure in assignation of anthropometric details. The previously planned application in strategic areas where there is a greater contact with the body, under pressure by weight or employed strength, makes the material adapt to local contours of the body providing comfort, firmness and security. These are primal elements for the ideal functioning of a product and they aggregate preferential values to the userþs power of choice. This way, it is formulated the concept of Mimetic Materials, related to the aim of this study which are the analysis of subjectsþ personal preference for personal protection equipments that have this kind of material adaptable to the body as a fundamental part of their structure; the verification that preference is related to sensations produced by the material; decisive factors for userþs final choice; analysis of the interface; and secondary elements of design for referential contribuition...
Abstract: The protection of metallic surfaces is a subject of great scientific and economical interests. The huge amounts of money regularly employed in maintenance and conservation motivate investigations on the production of materials with larger durability, preserving the esthetic aspect. In this work, it is proposed the development of an electrolytic plasma device and the investigation of its applicability on the improvement of the resistance to corrosion of 2024 aluminum alloy coupons. Modifications in corrosion resistance conferred by the films to the substrates have been evaluated through salt spray tests and electrochemical and polarization impedances. Fourier infrared absorption spectroscopy has been employed to assess composition and chemical structure of the coatings. Layer thickness has been determined by prolilometry and the eddy current method, while modifications in surface wettability have been evaluated through contact angle measurements. It has been observed that, under certain experimental conditions, the treatments have enhanced the resistance to salt spray corrosion up to 145 times, as compared to the pristine substrates.

As fêmeas apresentaram cuidado parental e ensinam as crias onde buscar alimento. Abstract: Predatory bugs of genus Atopozelus (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) are native from Neotropical region, with five described species and three registered in Brazil. In August, 2007, in São Simão, state of São Paulo, Brazil, leaves of Eucalyptus camaldulensis infested by red gum lerp psyllid were collected and it was observed the presence of a small green bug, which feed on psyllids. The bug was identified as Atopozelus opsimus (Elkins, 1954). Due to the recent discovery of this predator and to the existence of few information of its bioecology, this study aimed to characterize external morphology and morphometry, life cycle and behavior of A. opsimus maintained in Glycaspis brimblecombei (Moore, 1964) in laboratory conditions (temperature of 26 ± 2 oC, 70 ± 10% RH and photophase of 13 h). The morphological and morphometric studies helped to observe the differences between development stages. Considering biology study, the parameters evaluated were: duration and viability of nymphal stage, adults longevity, number and viability of eggs per female, number of ovipositions per female, duration of incubation period and the total life cycle. The predator had five nymphal instars with total duration of 40.3 ± 1.40 days. Female and male longevity were 61.0 ± 8.0 and 39.0 ± 5.1 days, respectively. Both sexes have total life-cycle with 120.2 ± 8.4 and 92.58 ± 5.9 days for females and males, respectively. Since first stage the bug fed on nymphs and adults of red gum lerp psyllid, presenting phytophagy and omnivorous, too. Adults had ability to remove the lerp that protects psyllid nymphs. Females had maternal care and teaches the offspring where they get food. A. opsimus shows unusual features of the various biological control agents found in the nature, and become a promising agent in biological control programs in Eucalyptus spp. plantations infested by G. brimblecombei.

Abstract:
This chapter describes the Wipptal South Pilot Action Region (PAR) in South Tyrol, where forests are well recognized to play a crucial role in protecting against a variety of gravity-driven natural hazards, such as landslides, debris flows, rock falls and snow avalanches. The chapter presents the three municipalities in the PAR area in terms of socio-environmental context, gravity-driven natural hazards and forest characteristics. The presented best-practice example describes the results of a former project entitled “Waldtypisierung Südtirol” (Eng. Forest Characterization South Tyrol) that focused on a detailed description of forests in South Tyrol and the development of a handbook for foresters. It is shown that the Wipptal South PAR as being is frequently affected by a variety of gravity-induced hazards while highlighting the critical role of forest in protecting people and their properties. Appropriate forest management strategies are vital to maintain and increase tree species diversity (e.g. populating fir) and the associated protective forest function. In this context, climate change effects, such as an increasing threat of bark beetle infestation due to rising drought stress or the consequences of associated extreme weather events (e.g. storms), pose major challenges for the local forests and their protective function.

Abstract:
This article describes the benefits offered by a new type of numerical protection system, applied to gas turbine generators. World-wide more than 100 different generators with a total rating of about 6000 MW are equipped with this type of protection system. This protection system is completely independent of other power plant equipment, with its own DC power supplies, input isolating auxiliary current and voltage transformers and optocoupler or relay type binary input/output devices as well as serial communication links. The heart of the system is a multiprocessor high speed bus capable of handling the communication between the measuring inputs, the protection algorithm processor (s) and the output units. The system makes use of a large library of modular, pretested protective functions. Continuous self-monitoring enhances the availability of the complete protective system. Modern, well coordinated protection and turbine control systems offer new advantages to the user such as faster handling of emergency situations through the availability of more and better information together with the possibility of faster and more detailed fault analysis. In addition, a reduction in the time required for commissioning, e.g. for cables and instrument transformers, can be realized. This paper is presented to provide some understanding of the application of the protection system introduced here, in particular in connection with the ABB gas turbine generator unit type GT11N. Also introduced are the main components involved, such as numerical protective functions, self-monitoring of protection systems, and data exchange.

Abstract:
This paper documents how utilizing available source term information, integrated safety management, and associated engineering, administrative and personal protective equipment (PPE) controls are used in concert to perform work safely. Two field projects consisting of 1) a room containing both hazardous (e.g., hydrofluoric acid) and radioactive constituents and 2) a former reaction vessel containing approximately 568 liters (150 gallons) of lime sludge and technetium-99 (Tc-99) were organized using the Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) Integrated Safety Management System (ISMS). This system allowed the project teams to control work-related decisions based on their knowledge, experience, expertise, and field observations. The information and experience gained from each project stage and rehearsals contributed to modifying subsequent entries, further emphasizing the importance of developing hold points and incorporating lessons learned. Furthermore, selecting the appropriate PPE is based on providing an adequate level of employee protection relative to the task-specific conditions and hazards. PPE is categorized into four ensembles based on the degree of protection afforded, e.g., Levels A (most restrictive), B, C, and D (least restrictive). What is often overlooked in preparing an ensemble is that the PPE itself can create significant worker hazards, i.e., the greater the level of PPE, the greater the associated risks. Furthermore, there is confusion as to whether a more “conservative approach” should always be taken since Level B provides the same level of respiratory protection as Level A but less skin protection. Additional information summarizes the Occupational Safety and Health Administration regulations addressing Level A versus Level B, and provides justification for selecting Level B over Level A without under-protecting the employee. The hazards and the chemical nature of hydrofluoric acid provide qualitative evidence to justify Level A. Once hydrofluoric acid is removed as a source term constituent, PPE performance is evaluated against the remaining chemical inventory. If chemical breakthrough from direct contact is not expected to occur and instrument readings confirm the absence of any hazardous vapors, additional skin protection afforded by wearing a vapor-tight, totally encapsulated suit is not required. Therefore, PPE performance and instrument data provide quantitative evidence to justify Level B. These projects exemplify that using guidance provided by DOE’s ISMS and the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) demonstrates how a detailed and thorough planning process integrating safe work practices and commitment to teamwork can result in the safe and effective completion of very complex and highly hazardous projects.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract An open source research and vulnerability study of main battle tanks and their protections systems revealed that current anti-tank weapons may not be suited to defeat modern threats. One example is the novel T-14 tank being developed and tested in the Russian army with its combined hard-kill and soft-kill active protection system AFGANIT / SHTORA, its new reactive armor MALACHIT as well as improved multi-component passive armor. Additionally, modern active protection systems currently developed in, e.g., Israel, the United States, and Germany feature also multi-sensor and multi-effector systems with drastically improved detection and intercept ranges, short system reaction times as well as protection against multiple threats attacking simultaneously and / or from similar directions. While known effectors and concepts may overcome fielded active protections systems, they are probably not suited in defeating such modern and even future systems. Countermeasures relying on high engagement velocities through improved kinetic energy projectiles or hypervelocity penetrators may provide a potential solution. Another promising concept generates directed, far-distance electromagnetic effects defeating sensors and communications systems of modern main battle tanks. After such a mission kill, a following salvo attack through an anti-tank or modern multi-role weapon will eventually lead to a catastrophic kill. Feasibility studies of these mobile electromagnetic effectors have already shown their high potential.

Abstract:
<p>An essential element of fire protection, in addition to the appropriate design of load‐bearing components (fire resistance), is the subdivision of buildings into fire compartments. In modern architecture is a demand for transparent fire‐resistant components, which are then made of glass. Verifications of the load‐bearing capacity against static loads such as wind usually are done by calculation whereas fire resistance is proofed by tests. In most cases, fire‐resistant glass has no further proof, transparent glass components are either classified for fire or to meet other special requirements such as fall protection (e.g. for floor‐ceiling façade elements) or “walk‐ on”. The paper gives an overview about the possibilities to fulfill the requirements for static glass design (including fall protection and walk‐on element) as well as for fire protection, respectively. To complete the picture, examples of realized projects are presented. For several types of vertical and horizontal fire‐protective glazing, testing to verify impact resistance were carried out. For a walk‐on‐overhead‐glazing installed in a subway station testing in a furnace against fire and in laboratory against walking people was done.</p>

Kelly, Luke. Lessons Learned on Cultural Heritage Protection in Conflict and Protracted Crisis. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), April 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.068.

Full text
Abstract:
This rapid review examines evidence on the lessons learned from initiatives aimed at embedding better understanding of cultural heritage protection within international monitoring, reporting and response efforts in conflict and protracted crisis. The report uses the terms cultural property and cultural heritage interchangeably. Since the signing of the Hague Treaty in 1954, there has bee a shift from 'cultural property' to 'cultural heritage'. Culture is seen less as 'property' and more in terms of 'ways of life'. However, in much of the literature and for the purposes of this review, cultural property and cultural heritage are used interchangeably. Tangible and intangible cultural heritage incorporates many things, from buildings of globally recognised aesthetic and historic value to places or practices important to a particular community or group. Heritage protection can be supported through a number of frameworks international humanitarian law, human rights law, and peacebuilding, in addition to being supported through networks of the cultural and heritage professions. The report briefly outlines some of the main international legal instruments and approaches involved in cultural heritage protection in section 2. Cultural heritage protection is carried out by national cultural heritage professionals, international bodies and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) as well as citizens. States and intergovernmental organisations may support cultural heritage protection, either bilaterally or by supporting international organisations. The armed forces may also include the protection of cultural heritage in some operations in line with their obligations under international law. In the third section, this report outlines broad lessons on the institutional capacity and politics underpinning cultural protection work (e.g. the strength of legal protections; institutional mandates; production and deployment of knowledge; networks of interested parties); the different approaches were taken; the efficacy of different approaches; and the interface between international and local approaches to heritage protection.

Orrnert, Anna. Review of National Social Protection Strategies. Institute of Development Studies (IDS), March 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.19088/k4d.2021.026.

Full text
Abstract:
This helpdesk report reviews ten national social protection strategies (published between 2011-2019) in order to map their content, scope, development processes and measures of success. Each strategy was strongly shaped by its local context (e.g. how social development was defined, development priorities and existing capacity and resources) but there were also many observed similarities (e.g. shared values, visions for social protection). The search focused on identifying strategies with a strong social assistance remit from the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), Sub-Sarahan African and South and South-East Asian regions1 (Latin America was deemed out of scope due the advanced nature of social protection there). Examples from Sub-Saharan Africa are most widely available. Few examples are available from the MENA region2 – it may be that such strategies do not currently exist, that potential strategy development process are in more nascent stages or that those strategies that do exist are not accessible in English. A limitation of this review is that it has not been able to review strategies in other languages. The strategies reviewed in this report are from Bangladesh (2015), Cambodia (2011), Ethiopia (2012), Jordan (2019), Kenya (2011), Lesotho (2014), Liberia (2013), Rwanda (2011), Uganda (2015) and Zambia (2014). The content of this report focuses primarily on the information from these strategies. Where appropriate, it also includes information from secondary sources about other strategies where those original strategies could not be found (e.g. Saudi Arabia’s NSDS).
