Abstract:
This chapter provides a broad definition of surveillance in relation to health protection, including infections, environmental hazards, and health delivery. Surveillance systems include active, passive, and sentinel surveillance, and guidelines are provided for assessing the quality of surveillance data. Surveillance tools include the statutory notification of diseases, laboratory reporting, and prevalence surveys. In addition, syndromic surveillance, the (near) real-time collection of data has become increasingly used, facilitated by increasing use of digital data collection within health care settings and the availability of other digital data sources (e.g. social media). Other surveillance types include event-based surveillance (e.g. during major sporting events), and environmental surveillance, including food related disease, air pollution and chemical hazards. The chapter finally brings these together in integrated surveillance and the use of such surveillance in health planning and assessment.

Verma, Suman. Social Protection, Adolescent Well-Being, and Development in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780190847128.003.0016.

Abstract:
Effective social protection policies are crucial to realizing adolescents’ rights, ensuring their well-being, breaking the cycle of poverty and vulnerability, and helping them realize their full developmental potential. Low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) have extended social security coverage to ensure basic protections—while continuing to develop social protection systems. Social protection for LMIC adolescents in the context of gross violations of their basic rights is examined. Prevalence, consequences of protection rights violations, and the role and impact of social protection programs in ensuring enhanced opportunities for development and well-being among young people are discussed. Results demonstrate direct impacts (e.g., increased income, consumption, goods and services access; greater social inclusion; reduced household stress). LMICs need integrated social protection policy and program expansion if the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is to be realized. With adolescent-centered policies and investments, governments can help adolescents realize their rights to a fulfilling and productive life.

Abstract:
This is the first of three chapters on protecting girls and women at risk and bringing about the end of honor killing. These short-term, emergency measures are understood as occurring while other efforts are made to achieve the long-term abolition of honor killing. Also examined are possibilities for leveraging change; that is, changing behaviors through pressures from outside honor–shame communities and through pressures that are coercive. Emergency interventions discussed include those tested elsewhere as well as new initiatives. Insofar as possible, trusted members of local communities should administer emergency interventions. Interventions include hotlines, smartphone apps, information networks, mobile crisis teams, observer-informants, shelters, halfway houses, family centers, granting asylum, and others. The objective of leveraged change, primarily initiated by outside change agents, is to make continuing honor killings too costly. Recommended leveraging strategies include legal reforms, moral entrepreneurship, initiative by media and national elites, and decreasing learned and socialized aggression.
