Earlier studies have found that endangered species recovery is only weakly associated with the tools enabled by the U.S. Endangered Species Act (ESA). With habitat loss often cited as a leading cause of species declines, we tested whether the recovery of ESA-listed species is instead associated with the protection of critical habitat (CH) by protected areas. We tested the relationship for 299 species using recovery indices derived from the biennial status reports to Congress (1990-2010), as well as NatureServe and IUCN population status data. We found no overall relationship between recover

Second, a landowner survey was conducted using a structured interview questionnaire to determine landowner attitudes, and the possible factors influencing these attitudes, towards forested land, wildlife, the resplendent quetz

The issues examined range from behavioural advertising to the public reaction to revelations of mass data surveillance by government security agencies. Academic research on privacy and the threat to users posed by vast amounts of personal information available online is summarised, along with challenges this poses for legislators.

An increasing number of software systems must safeguard their confidential data and code, referred to as critical program information (CPI). Such safeguarding is commonly accomplished by isolating CPI in a trusted execution environment (TEE), with the isolated CPI becoming a trusted computing base (TCB). TEE protection incurs heavy performance costs, as TEE-based functionality is expensive to both invoke and execute. Despite these costs, projects that use TEEs tend to have unnecessarily large TCBs. As based on our analysis, developers often put code and data into TEE for convenience rather tha

Pylarinou, A. "Impacts of climate change on UK coastal and estuarine habitats : a critical evaluation of the Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM)." Thesis, University College London (University of London), 2015. http://discovery.ucl.ac.uk/1468970/.

Abstract:
From an increasing awareness of the risks posed by climate change emerge the need to model potential impacts on coasts at a high spatial resolution, broad spatial scales, and time scales that correspond to the widely used IPCC sea-level rise scenarios. Little previous work has been carried out at this scale in the UK. This thesis investigates the potential of ‘reduced complexity’ models as a tool to represent mesoscale impacts of sea-level rise on UK estuarine environments. The starting point for this work is the Sea Level Affecting Marshes Model (SLAMM), which has been widely used in the USA.

This thesis argues that Access and Benefit Sharing CABS) agreements, no matter how fair and equitable, ultimately help to destroy traditional knowledge rather than protect it. ABS agreements are promoted and implemented as one of the key mechanisms for the protection of traditional knowledge from illegitimate appropriation by pharmaceutical companies or other actors. However, because they dominantly treat traditional knowledge as intellectual property in need of protection from misappropriation, they have the effect of expanding capital into a previously non- capitalist domain. The thesis argu
