Role of the protection forest in integrated risk management Half the Swiss forests play a role in protecting against natural hazards. After a historical overview of the strategy of protection against natural hazards and of the development of the protection function of the forest, the authors, basing the analysis on the modern definition of integrated risk management, demonstrate, on the basis of evidence, that protection forests may be considered as a protective measure for integrated risk management. Current guidelines for legal timber harvests are not sustainable. Timber yields can be substantially enhanced by the application of cost-effective silvicultural treatments that increase stocking and growth of timber trees. Growing interest in tropical forest restoration offers opportunities to promote the management of secondary and degraded forests for timber, and mixed plantations with native species. Timber yields from these restored areas would reduce pressure on natural forests – allowing larger areas to be set aside for protection and reducing harvesting intensity in natural forests.

Abstract:
The key question the research in this paper tries to answer is whether those four activities truly represent a viable economic alternative in Latin America's environmentally fragile hinterlands. Several cases in each line of activity are analyzed to determine the level and distribution of the net financial returns they generate. Special attention was devoted to examining the degree to which net returns flow to local populations, as opposed to other economic agents. In general, examination of the rewards local populations can expect to derive from ecotourism and the harvesting of nontimber fore

Abstract:
Over the last decade (2010-2020), the Amazon carbon budget, integrating all absorption and emission processes, indicates that the region has become a carbon source. Extreme climate events exacerbate human-driven changes in the Amazon, threatening the wellbeing of Indigenous peoples and local communities (IPLCs) as well as those who live in its cities and towns. Ending all deforestation (legal and illegal) and preventing forest degradation can restore the Amazonian carbon sink. Carbon markets (i.e., transactions of carbon credits in exchange for carbon removals or storage) can provide part of t

Abstract:
This paper reviews the state of knowledge regarding the impacts of selective logging, as practised in Queensland, on the Greater Glider (Petauroides volans sensu lato) and assesses the protection measures proposed by the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries. A range of studies and assessments shows that selective logging is significantly impacting the habitat of greater gliders in southern Queensland. The proposed protection measures represent very little improvement over current practice. Continued selective logging will have a significant impact on the endangered Greater Glider

Abstract:
The mangrove forest ecosystem is a critical coastal resource in South Florida’s Biscayne National Park (BISC); Salt River Bay National Historical Site and Ecological Preserve (SARI) in St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands; and the Virgin Islands National Park (VIIS) in St John, U.S. Virgin Islands. Mangrove wetlands provide flood control, storm protection, shore stabilization, water filtration (capturing soil runoff), carbon sequestration, and habitat for fish and wildlife communities. The economic value of the services derived from mangroves has been estimated as high as $200,000–$900,000 ha-1 (Uni
