This thesis sets out to demonstrate the role of Western missionaries and Korean Christians, especially Protestants, on Korean nationalism. The first significant introduction of Protestantism into Korea came in 1884. Within just over thirty years, the Protestant Church in Korea expanded and many of the nationalist leaders took active roles in the Korean nationalist movement against Japanese imperialism. The denominations are categorized using Steensland et al's (2000) methodology and include evangelical, mainline, and black Protestants. In this study, I search to explore whether the effect of Protestantism on the level of corruption(understood as the misuse of public power for private gain) withstand when controlled forsecularism. This is done via a series of multiple regression analysis which conclude that theeffect of Protestantism on the perceived level of corruption persists when controlling forsecularism. Though the effect is greatly diminished, even when controlling for classicaleconomic factors. This study examines the growth of conservative Protestantism, or evangelicalism, in British Columbia from 1917, the beginning of open conflict with theological liberalism, to 1981. The period witnessed the development of evangelical institutions from rudimentary beginnings before 1920 to the rise of a complex network by the 1970's. It focuses on the works of the Aberdonian minister and theologian, William Guild (1586–1657), who was one of the most prominent seventeenth-­‐century typological exegetes.
