Abstract:
The smart utilization of photons is paid global attention from the viewpoint of renewable energy and information technology. However, it is still impossible to store photons as batteries and condensers do for electrons. All the present technologies utilize (the energy of) photons in situ, such as solar panels, or in spontaneous relaxation processes, such as photoluminescence. If we can store the energy of photons over an arbitrary period and utilize them on demand, not only we will make an innovative progress in energy management, but we will also be able to replace a part of electrons by photons in the information technology for more efficient performance. In this article, we review a prototype of such a material including the current status of related research as well as where we are heading for.

Abstract:
Urban sanitation in growing cities of the Global South presents particular challenges. This led to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation’s Reinvent The Toilet Challenge, which sparked the development of various non-sewered sanitation technologies like the Nano Membrane Toilet. Complex disruptive technologies like this entail an extensive product development process, including various types of prototype tests. While there is an abundance of literature discussing how to build prototypes, and the optimal number of tests, there has been little focus on how to plan and conduct tests, especially in a development endeavour of this complexity. Four approaches to testing are reviewed, and their strengths and weaknesses compared. A visualised testing strategy is proposed that encompasses the entire product development process and can be used to plan and communicate prototype tests for the Nano Membrane Toilet to ultimately achieve compliance with international standards.

Pei, Dekun. "Development of simulation tools, control strategies, and a hybrid vehicle prototype." Thesis, Georgia Institute of Technology, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/1853/45904.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis (1) reports the development of simulation tools and control strategies for optimizing hybrid electric vehicle (HEV) energy management, and (2) reports the design and testing of a hydraulic hybrid school bus (HHB) prototype. A hybrid vehicle is one that combines two or more energy sources for use in vehicle propulsion. Hybrid electric vehicles have become popular in the consumer market due to their greatly improved fuel economy over conventional vehicles. The control strategy of an HEV has a paramount effect on its fuel economy performance. In this thesis, backward-looking and forward-looking simulations of three HEV architectures (parallel, power-split and 2-mode power-split) are developed. The Equivalent Cost Minimization Strategy (ECMS), which weights electrical power as an equivalent fuel usage, is then studied in great detail and improvements are suggested. Specifically, the robustness of an ECMS controller is improved by linking the equivalence factor to dynamic programming and then further tailoring its functional form. High-fidelity vehicle simulations over multiple drive-cycles are performed to measure the improved performance of the new ECMS controller, and to show its potential for online application. While HEVs are prominent in the consumer market and studied extensively in current literature, hydraulic hybrid vehicles (HHVs) only exist as heavy utility vehicle prototypes. The second half of this thesis reports design, construction, and testing of a hydraulic hybrid school bus prototype. Design considerations, simulation results, and preliminary testing results are reported, which indicate the strong potential for hydraulic hybrids to improve fuel economy in the school bus vehicle segment.

Os metabólitos secundários, agatisflavona e ácido 3-oxo-urs-12-en- 28-óico, foram determinados serem inibidores do tipo não-competitivo parcial da catepsina L do tipo r-CPB2.8, e a tetrahidrorobustaflavona como um inibidor incompetitivo desta catepsina L (r-CPB2.8), com valores de Ki na faixa de micromolar (Ki = 0,14&#8722;1,26 &#956;M).<br>The early phase of this work involved a screening of plant extracts of São Paulo cerrado using assays with arginase (ARG) from Leishmania amazonensis. The results of enzymatic inhibition of ARG by the extracts led to the bioactivity-guided fractionation of the ethyl acetate extracts (leaves and stems) of Byrsonima coccolobifolia Kunth. (Malpighiaceae). Thereafter, several bioactive compounds were isolated (flavonoids, galloylquinic acids, a lignan, a phenathrenone and an orthoquinone) indicating that these compounds may are the responsible for the decrease in ARG activity observed in B. coccolobifolia extracts. The flavonoids and galloylquinic acids showed to be noncompetitive inhibitors of ARG with significant inhibitory activities (IC50 = 0.13 to 4.8 &#956;M) and strong affinity (Ki values ranging from 0.10 to 3.8 &#956;M). Additionally, structure activity relationship study (SAR) revealed that catechol group in flavonoids, likewise as galloyl unit in galloylquinic acids structures yielded important features for ARG inhibitor interactions. In the second part of this work, subsequent experiments were performed to investigate the natural products against proteases. These enzymes play pivotal roles in the pathogenicity of virus and parasites, such as: serine proteases NS2B-NS3 from dengue virus serotype 2 and 3 (dengue fever), rhodesain from Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense (African trypanosomiasis), cruzain from Trypanosoma cruzi (chagas disease), cathepsin L from Leishmania mexicana (leishmaniasis), and falcipain-2 from Plasmodium falciparum (malaria). Through these studies were discovered inhibitors of NS2B-NS3 proteases of dengue virus and inhibitors of the L. mexicana cathepsin L-like r- CPB2.8.

Abstract:
The introduction of autonomous vehicles in traffic is driven by expected gains in multiple areas, such as improvement of health and safety, better resource utilization, pollution reduction and greater convenience. The development of more competent algorithms will determine the rate and level of success for the ambitions around autonomous vehicles. In this thesis work an intersection management system for a mix of autonomous and manually driven vehicles is created. The purpose is to investigate the strategy to combine turn intention prediction for manually driven vehicles with scheduling of autonomous vehicle. The prediction method used is support vector machine (SVM) and scheduling of vehicles have been made by dividing the intersection into an occupancy grid and apply different safety levels. Real-life data comprising recordings of large volumes of traffic through an intersection has been combined with simulated vehicles to assess the relevance of the new algorithms. Measurements of collision rate and traffic flow showed that the algorithms behaved as expected. A miniature vehicle based on a prototype for an autonomous RC-car has been designed with the purpose of testing of the algorithms in a laboratory setting.<br>Införandet av autonoma fordon i trafiken drivs av förväntade vinster i flera områden, såsom förbättring av hälsa och säkerhet, bättre resursutnyttjande, minskning av föroreningar och ökad bekvämlighet.

Abstract:
This study attempts to emphasize on the need for Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) implementations for Turkey, particularly for strategic level planning activities. 1/25.000 scaled Territorial Plans are subject to be strategic level plans in Turkey since there are no regional plans developed in Turkey. Although these plans should carry the role of strategic decisions for the sector development of regions, they do not provide sufficient output for development for many reasons today. The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the role of Strategic Environmental Assessment in integrating environment into strategic decision making -particularly for 1/25.000 territories plans- and propose a prototype SEA approach for Turkey. An integrated structure of SEA and planning activities might provide healthier implementations for Territory plans and SEA might be used as an enhancement toll for our current planning system with its transparent, participatory, coordinating and auditing nature.

Abstract:
Groups of companies are common. The empirical data are heterogeneous. Agency problems arise between the controlling shareholder and the minority shareholders and between the shareholders and the creditors. Three regulatory models exist: regulation by general corporate and/or civil law (prototype: the UK); regulation by special group law (prototype: Germany); and regulation by areas of the law such as banking, competition, and tax. The main strategy is mandatory disclosure and group accounting. Related party transactions (including conflict of interest and tunneling) are dealt with by disclosure and consent requirements. In addition, appropriate standards for directors and controlling shareholders (corporate governance) have been developed. They become stricter, if insolvency is approaching. The concept of the shadow director extends liability to the controlling shareholder. Other mechanisms for creditor protection are indemnification, veil-piercing, subordination and substantive consolidation. A fair amount of international convergence exists as to shareholder protection, but not as to creditor protection.

Abstract:
AbstractWe present a causality-based algorithm for solving two-player reachability games represented by logical constraints. These games are a useful formalism to model a wide array of problems arising, e.g., in program synthesis. Our technique for solving these games is based on the notion of subgoals, which are slices of the game that the reachability player necessarily needs to pass through in order to reach the goal. We use Craig interpolation to identify these necessary sets of moves and recursively slice the game along these subgoals. Our approach allows us to infer winning strategies that are structured along the subgoals. If the game is won by the reachability player, this is a strategy that progresses through the subgoals towards the final goal; if the game is won by the safety player, it is a permissive strategy that completely avoids a single subgoal. We evaluate our prototype implementation on a range of different games. On multiple benchmark families, our prototype scales dramatically better than previously available tools.

Abstract:
Abstract This book chapter argues for an open-access catalogue of taxonomic descriptions with prototypes; diagnostic tables; and links to culture collections, to genome and gene sequences, and to other phenotypic and ecological databases. Ideally, the open access taxonomy will be based solely on genome sequences that allow both the phylogenetic allocation of new strains and species in the taxonomic space and the phenotypic/metabolic characterization in open online databases. Careful and thorough annotation of the genome sequences for function and chemotaxonomic data will be required. An alternative Code will be required for the naming strategy of genomes. Current microbial taxonomy is not able to keep up with the pace of development in microbial ecology. Innovative ways of developing microbial taxonomy are, therefore, needed urgently. This novel approach can, for the first time, allow microbial species descriptions using genomes based on ecological and evolutionary theory. One challenge ahead is to leverage the use of genome sequences to obtain insights on the (in silico) phenotypes and ecology of novel taxa.

This work seeks to introduce and evaluate effects of a novel method for designing prototyping strategies. This newly developed heuristics-based tool guides designers in planning a prototyping strategy based on answers to Likert-scale questions that embody empirically validated heuristics. We created this tool to augment prior work in the development of prototyping planning methods. The new tool guides designers through six critical prototype strategy choices: (1) How many concepts should be prototyped? (2) How many iterations of a concept should be built? (3) Should the prototype be virtual or physical? (4) Should subsystems be isolated? (5) Should the prototype be scaled? (6) Should the design requirements be temporarily relaxed? We assessed the new planning tool in two environments: (1) a controlled experiment in which volunteers completed a prototyping design challenge, and (2) a capstone design class with a diverse range of open-ended sponsored design projects. In both cases, students received training for the method and then employed it in their own efforts. In our study the new tool caused student teams to employ significantly more efficient and effective prototyping strategies, such as prototyping early and often. The results indicate a higher functional performance of prototypes from groups using the new planning tool compared to control groups. This paper describes the new prototyping strategy planning tool, details both sets of experiments, and discusses results.

Abstract:
We study a practical domain adaptation task, called source-free unsupervised domain adaptation (UDA) problem, in which we cannot access source domain data due to data privacy issues but only a pre-trained source model and unlabeled target data are available. This task, however, is very difficult due to one key challenge: the lack of source data and target domain labels makes model adaptation very challenging. To address this, we propose to mine the hidden knowledge in the source model and exploit it to generate source avatar prototypes (i.e. representative features for each source class) as well as target pseudo labels for domain alignment. To this end, we propose a Contrastive Prototype Generation and Adaptation (CPGA) method. Specifically, CPGA consists of two stages: (1) prototype generation: by exploring the classification boundary information of the source model, we train a prototype generator to generate avatar prototypes via contrastive learning. (2) prototype adaptation: based on the generated source prototypes and target pseudo labels, we develop a new robust contrastive prototype adaptation strategy to align each pseudo-labeled target data to the corresponding source prototypes. Extensive experiments on three UDA benchmark datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

Abstract:
Micro power system is becoming more and more important for micro- and nano-scale system. The fast development of MEMS (Micro Electromechanical Systems) has strongly enhanced the application of new harder work materials. The fabrication of metallic 3D microstructures has been one of the most attractive topics of micro machining. Currently the basic materials of Micro-turbine Engineering were nonmetal materials such as SiC, most of them are 2D or quasi-3D structures. This paper focuses on the manufacturing process on micro compressor prototype by micro-EDM milling. The micro compressor prototype contains the rotor disk and stator disk. A simple tool path generation by CAD/CAM software and a general electrode wear compensation strategy is presented. The micro compressor prototype with rotor and stator disks was successfully fabricated by using this strategy, and the materials of workpieces are nickel alloy GH4169 and titanium alloy TC4.

Abstract:
One of the major limitations to the development of advanced wave energy converters (WECs) control strategies are the associated computational costs. For instance, model predictive control (MPC) strategies have the potential to obtain almost optimal performance, provided that the imperfect power conversion in the power take-off (PTO) system is correctly taken into account in the optimization criterion and that the incoming wave force can be estimated and forecast. However, demanding computational requirements as well as the unresolved issue of wave force estimation have so far prevented real-time implementation and validation of such MPC strategies. In this paper, we present the successful experimental results obtained on a scaled-down prototype of the well-known Wavestar machine. Performance comparisons are provided for nonlinear MPC versus a reference PI controller.

Abstract:
[Extract from Executive Summary] The collection of additional data to facilitate fisheries management has been identified as a priority at the national level via the Scottish Inshore Fisheries Strategy, and at the local level in the management plans of Regional Inshore Fisheries Groups. Data collection implemented by industry offers a potentially cost effective means by which to provide additional information to enhance current stock assessment programmes, and to produce empirical indicators to inform fisheries management. The fundamental driver for data collection should be the purpose for which it is required; however, the regionalisation of fisheries management and increased, and often competing, demands, on our marine space mean that there are many potential uses for industry derived data. This report presents the findings of a single work package in the wider prototypic Scottish Inshore Fisheries Integrated Data System (SIFIDS) project; looking at ways in which inshore fisheries data collection can be improved on. The propose of this work package was to review and evaluate current inshore (shellfish) fisheries data collection and stock assessments in order to determine where it might be possible for industry derived data collection to provide a positive contribution. For the purposes of this work package the focus was limited to brown crab, lobsters, and scallops.
