Marcel Proust’s works contain a lot of ideas consonant with the ideas that were actively discussed by philosophers of his time. Many philosophers focused on the issues of perception, memory, will, freedom, personal identity, etc., which constituted an important part of academic curriculum. Proust familiarized himself with the issues studying philosophy at the Lyceum (he was taught by Alphonse Darlu) and at the Sorbonne. In his novel In Search of Lost Time, Proust describes an existential experience of his character viewing these issues from a particular perspective, through the prism of the ma

Proust ne connaissait pas ce système en tant que tel mais, en s’inspirant de l’architecture médiévale pour construire son roman comme un bâtiment de mémoire, il s’inscrit dans la longue tradition de cet art polymorphe.

Second issue is the process of defining target market with respect to each product, assessing all the relevant risks for such defined target market and analysis of the adequacy of the intended distribution strategy. Moreover, a formal recognition of the possibility of creating insurance products by the insurance intermediaries and the imposition of the relevant obligations would be considered. This book offers a reading of Marcel Proust's novel À la recherche du temps perdu through the lens of skepticism. It examines the spectacle of Proust arguing with himself, and more specifically his attempt to apply his rule to his own creation, as an argument with and against himself, in particular, his lucid refusal to take on “faith” and hence protect from “enquiry” what in other moods and enthusiasms he most cherished, namely, his own mad belief in the resurrecting, transfiguring, and redeeming powers of art. The book also considers Proust's two voices for the invocations of madness in connection with the certifiable condition of sexual jealousy. Finally, it explores the question of “truth” in the context of philosophical “skepticism” as well as the relation between sexuality and the pursuit of knowledge in the Recherche.

This chapter discusses the nature of time in The Sound and the Fury, noting that the first thing that strikes one in reading William Faulkner's novel is its technical oddity. It wonders why Faulkner has “broken up the time of his story and scrambled the pieces,” and suggests that his metaphysics is a metaphysics of time. At first glance, the technique Faulkner has adopted seems a negation of temporality because we confuse temporality with chronology. The unspeakable present, the sudden invasions of the past, the memories—all are reminiscent of the lost and recaptured time of Marcel Proust. Faulkner uses his extraordinary art to describe our suffocation and a world dying of old age. The essays claims that it likes Faulkner's art, but it does not believe in his metaphysics.

Karlin, Daniel. "Introduction." In Street Songs. Oxford University Press, 2018. http://dx.doi.org/10.1093/oso/9780198792352.003.0001.

Full text
Abstract:
Street Songs, based on the Clarendon Lectures for 2016, is about the use made by poets and novelists of street songs and cries. Karlin begins with the London street-vendor’s cry of ‘Cherry-ripe!’, as it occurs in poems from the sixteenth to the twentieth century: the ‘Cries of London’ (and Paris) exemplify the fascination of this urban art to writers of every period. Focusing on nineteenth and early twentieth-century writers, the book traces the theme in works by William Wordsworth, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Browning, Walt Whitman, George Gissing, James Joyce, Virginia Woolf, and Marcel Proust. As well as street cries, these writers incorporate ballads, folk-songs, religious and political songs, and songs of their own invention into crucial scenes, and the singers themselves range from a one-legged beggar in Dublin to a famous painter in fifteenth-century Florence. The book concludes with the beautiful and unlikely ‘song’ of a knife-grinder’s wheel. Throughout the book Karlin emphasizes the rich complexity of his subject. The street singer may be figured as an urban Orpheus, enchanting the crowd and possessed of magical powers of healing and redemption; but the barbaric din of the modern city is never far away, and the poet who identifies with Orpheus may also dread his fate. And the fugitive, transient nature of song offers writers a challenge to their more structured art. Overheard in fragments, teasing, ungraspable, the street song may be ‘captured’ by a literary work but is never, finally, tamed.

Market players, such as competing manufacturing firms and retail channels, can significantly influence the demand and profit of a new product. Existing methods in design for market systems use game theoretic models that can maximize a focal manufacturing firm’s profit with respect to product design and price variables given the Nash equilibrium of the market system. However, in the design for uncertain market systems, there is seldom equilibrium with players having fixed strategies in a given time period. In this paper, we propose an agent based approach for design for market systems that acco

When designing a product, both engineering uncertainty and market heterogeneity should be considered to reduce the risk of failure in the market. Reliability-based design optimization (RBDO) approach allows decision makers to achieve target confidence in product performance under engineering uncertainty. Design for market systems (DMS) approach helps decision makers to find profit-maximized product design under market heterogeneity. Engineering approaches for optimizing designs within a market context generally take the perspective of a single producer, asking what design and price point will maximize producer profit predicted by consumer choice simulations. These approaches treat competitors and retailers as fixed or nonexistent, and they take business-oriented details, such as the structure of distribution channels, as separate issues that can be addressed post hoc by other disciplines. It is well established that the structure of market systems influences optimal product pricing. In this paper, we investigate whether t

Product and design analytics is emerging as a promising area for the analysis of large-scale data and reflection of the extracted knowledge for the design of optimal system. The Continuous Preference Trend Mining (CPTM) algorithm and a framework that are proposed in this study address some fundamental challenges in the context of product and design analytics. The first contribution is the development of a new predictive trend mining technique that captures a hidden trend of customer purchase patterns from large accumulated transactional data. By combining lifecycle design and predictive trend mining technique, the PPLD model can reflect both new and remanufactured product market demands, capture hidden and upcoming trends, and finally provide an optimal lifecycle design strategy in order to maximize profit over the span of the whole lifecycle. The outcomes are lifecycle design strategies such as product design feat

Single-speed gearboxes are popular in electric drive systems due to their simple and cost-effective configuration. However, multispeed gearboxes are being taken to market due to their higher low-speed torque, dynamic performance, and energy efficiency. More than 700,000 addresses on the CDS are marked as drop points, which are mail receptacles shared by multiple housing units (drop units). Drop points are a challenge to sample and present a potential source of error because of their "one-to-many" relationships. Several techniques have been developed to overcome this challenge, including deleting them from the frame or sampling all un

20 years ago a concept of “Green Chemistry” was formulated by Paul Anastas and John Warner, aiming at an ambitious agenda to “green” chemical products and processes. Today the concept, laid down in a set of 12 principles, has found support in various arenas. This diffusion was supported by enhancements of the legislative framework; not only in the European Union. Nevertheless industry actors – whilst generally supporting the idea – still see “cost and perception remain barriers to green chemistry uptake”. Thus, the questions arise how additional incentives as well as measures to address the ba
