Abstract:

Abstract:
Moths and butterflies (Lepidoptera) are the largest group with heterogametic females. Although the ancestral sex chromosome system is probably Z0/ZZ, most lepidopteran species have the W chromosome. When and how the W chromosome arose remains elusive. Existing hypotheses place the W origin either at the common ancestor of Ditrysia and Tischeriidae, or prefer independent origins of W chromosomes in these two groups. Due to their phylogenetic position at the base of Ditrysia, bagworms (Psychidae) play an important role in investigating the W chromosome origin. Therefore, we examined the W chromosome status in three Psychidae species, namely Proutia betulina, Taleporia tubulosa, and Diplodoma laichartingella, using both classical and molecular cytogenetic methods such as sex chromatin assay, comparative genomic hybridization (CGH), and male vs. female genome size comparison by flow cytometry. In females of all three species, no sex chromatin was found, no female-specific chromosome regions were revealed by CGH, and a Z-chromosome univalent was observed in pachytene oocytes. In addition, the genome size of females was significantly smaller than males. Overall, our study provides strong evidence for the absence of the W chromosome in Psychidae, thus supporting the hypothesis of two independent W chromosome origins in Tischeriidae and in advanced Ditrysia.

Abstract:
On May 17, 1853, a court sentenced Francis Prout of East Stonehouse, Devon, to six months' hard labor for receiving £1 15s. in stolen money. Prout's “lodger,” a Mary Ann Foss, had stood charged with the theft at the local quarter sessions, but during her trial she denounced Prout as a brothel keeper who profited from crimes committed in his house. With no real warning, Prout found himself tried and convicted. An even more alarming surprise followed a few days later, when the local authorities decided to pursue Prout's property. They invoked the ancient practice by which felons forfeited their possessions, claiming not just Prout's moveable goods, as was common, but also his ninety-nine-year leases on two local pubs and the profits from his freehold on a pub and houses in Plymouth. The latter constituted an unusual decision, in part because the inquisition necessary to seize the property would cost about £150, and in this case no interested party stepped forward to pay the fees. But as the chairman of the quarter sessions argued, Prout's property was “chiefly acquired by the wages of prostitution.” Underneath his talk of “fallen women” and “unfortunate creatures” lay a very modern concern with the illicit proceeds of criminal activity. In such a case, the chairman opined, the property in question should be forfeit.

Abstract:
A story titled “The Impressionists”that was published in 1897 should have something to say about art, but does it? The sixth installment in Rudyard Kipling'sStalky & Co.series, “The Impressionists” follows the antics of M'Turk, Stalky, and Beetle, three cunning boys at a dreary English military preparatory school. Suspecting these boys of cheating on their schoolwork, housemaster Mr. Prout turns them out of their private study into the main house dormitory. For revenge, and hoping to win back their room, Stalky & Co. becomeagents provocateurs. They start a fight in their house and manage to involve the other housemasters’ houses: “Under cover of the confusion the three escaped to the corridor, whence they called in and sent up passers-by to the fray. ‘Rescue, King's! King's! King's! Number Twelve form-room! Rescue, Prout's – Prout's! Rescue, Macrea's! Rescue, Hartopp's!’” (102). The three boys then allow Mr. Prout to overhear a conversation that makes money-lending seem common practice in the houses: “‘Where's that shillin’ you owe me?’ said Beetle suddenly. Stalky could not see Prout behind him, but returned the lead without a quaver. ‘I only owed you ninepence, you old usurer’” (103). Stalky & Co. rile up the other boys by telling ghost stories and spreading slanderous ditties; they turn the house against the prefects and undermine Mr. Prout's authority; and in the end they win back their room, but they are also found out by the headmaster, who mixes corporeal punishment with his admonishments: “There is a limit – one finds it by experience, Beetle – beyond which it is never safe to pursue private vendettas, because – don't move – sooner or later one comes – into collision with the – higher authority, who has studied the animal.Et ego– M'Turk, please –in Arcadia vixi” (117). The boys take the headmaster's attentions as a compliment, and they take his advice. Never again do they stake the school's peace in the pursuit of their own ends.

Abstract:
Abstract In the early 19th century, the discoveries of new substances in the healthy and diseased body spawned a search for chemical explanations for physiologic phenomena to guide medical diagnosis and control therapy. William Prout’s work on the nature and treatment of diseases of the urinary organs established his reputation as one of Britain’s most distinguished physiological chemists. Prout was very skeptical of chemical remedies because of possible side effects, but he suggested iodine treatment for goiter. He emphasized that a satisfactory diet should include carbohydrates, fats, protein, and water. In 1824, he showed that the acid of the gastric juice was hydrochloric acid. Prout applied chemical methods and reasoning to physiology and was criticized for his view that the body’s vital functions could be explained by chemistry. His remedy for lack of progress in animal chemistry was for physiologists to become chemists. Prout stimulated much discussion on atomic theory by his hypothesis that the atomic weights of all chemical elements are whole-number multiples of the atomic weight of hydrogen and that the chemical elements were condensed from hydrogen atoms.

AbstractThe Timandra griseata group is revised with special emphasis on the European taxa. It is concluded that two species with slightly overlapping distribution areas occur in Europe: T. griseata Petersen, 1902 which is confined to northern Europe and T. comai Schmidt, 1931 (= Calothysanis amataria brykaria Nordström, 1943, syn. n.) which is widespread in South and Central Europe. The differences in morphology, yearly occurrence and phenology between T. griseata and T. comai were studied in southern Finland. The following new combinations are proposed: Timandra Paralias (Prout), Timandra recompta ovidius (Bryk) and T. recompta prouti (Inoue). A lectotype for T. griseata Petersen is designated. T. paralias, although not a member of the T. griseata group, is redescribed because of its external resemblance.

Abstract:
In this contribution we have tried to explain Proust's characteristic time-experience connected to the acts of involuntary memory, in the scope of different psychological theories. During moments in the depressing state of tiredness or discomfort unexpectedly an old experience comes back with shocking sharpness and a flood of joy elicited by an effect of a trivial, seemingly insignificant sensory stimulus. Proust thought that by involuntary memory he could obtain moments when past experiences revealed their truth avoiding the selection and distortion of the conscious ego and conscious memory. The writer believes that involuntary memory shows the real and permanent essence of things. According to Kohut's explanation the proustian time-experience in which the narrator feels himself in two chronologically distant moments at the same time is significant because it provides evidence about the historically continuous psychological existence of the writer, thus helps him to maintain the coherence of his weak self. Sands argues that Proust wants to regain a particular but extremely positive self-experience which belongs to the symbiotic relationship with the idealized mother, and which can be revived only by involuntary memory after the mother's death. Chankin takes the famous Madeleine-scene as a starting point and explains the involuntary memory and the association chains derived from it as an attempt to resolve the screen memory which hides the traumatic childhood. This striving is embedded in Proust's deeper endeavour to solidify his identity by exploring his real past. We have made our own effort to explain the proustian time-experience on the basis of Melanie Klein's theory. In this framework the moments of involuntary memory can be recognized as a partial and temporary regressive state in which the primitive preverbal experience of the relationship between the idealized part-object and the joyful part-self (which is a characteristic of the paranoid-schizoid position) revives for a moment and forms a compromise by interfering with the actual conscious perception of the reality. Swartz presents a new aspect since he regards the proustian involuntary remembering as a transcendent experience (instead of a regressive or near-pathological state) which advances the process of personality development and individuation by showing new relations of things and the perceiving subject from a different level of perception. While we made some critical remarks on the discussions, there is no doubt that all of them reveal relevant aspects of the relation between memory and self-experience.

Analiza filmu Percy’ego Adlona z 1981 r., inspirowanego wspomnieniami gosposi Prousta, Céleste Albaret.

Abstract:
The focus of this article is the access to Higher Education in Brazil and the University for All Program (ProUni). The research aimed to understand if ProUni is complying with its objective of creating opportunities to students from vulnerable groups for accessing Higher Education, and if there are differences in the baseline characteristics of ProUni graduates and non-ProUni graduates when admitted in a Higher Education. Using a quantitative approach with explanatory goal, data were analyzed via descriptive and inference statistics. Survey participants included 57 ProUni and 140 non-ProUni graduates; all were already Higher Education graduates from a non-profit institution in Southern Brazil and had accessed this level of education in 2005. The results show that ProUni provided access to Higher Education to a younger group of students than the non-ProUni group. The ProUni group also contained a larger number of women and a higher proportion of non-whites than the other group. Among ProUni scholarships, 12.28% had a per capita income higher monthly to three minimum wages and had a higher probability of choosing a licentiate/undergraduate degree. The graduates of the non-ProUni group tended to be more motivated by intrinsic factors, while the ProUni group is motivated by extrinsic factors when choosing courses.

What was Lydia Prout’s “dreadfullest thought”? This microhistory, which examines one of the earliest devotional journals penned by a woman in British North America, uncovers surprising connections between the “unruly passion” of a devoted mother who suffered repeated bereavements during the 1710s and the Satanic fantasies of Salem witchcraft confessors in 1692.

The approach was quantitative with an explanatory goal. Descriptive and inferential statistics were used in the data analysis. The research subjects were 197 higher education graduates from a Southern Brazil nonprofit institution who entered in 2005. 57 were ProUni scholarship holders and 140 were non-ProUni. Results indicate that the highest percentage of graduates who worked during college were not scholarship holders. A T-test was performed after creating the scales for external (p = 0.19) and internal (p = 0.66) factors, indicating that in both factors there was no statistically significant difference between being a ProUni scholarship holder or not and the difficulties presented during their academic trajectory. Results indicate the need for studies involving the set of higher education graduates in order to better understand the difficulties faced by both groups of students in their academic trajectories.

Abstract:
This article presents a catalogue of some of the ways in which Proust's novel fails to make sense. The major categories of non-sense examined here are: minor inconsistencies due to the unfinished quality of the work; chronological incoherences; and inconsistent distinctions between narrator and author, with particular attention to textual entailments of the differences between the author and his semi-autobiographical narrator in terms of homosexuality, Jewishness and snobbery.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
Ostatnia książka francuskiego krytyka La chambre claire. Note sur la photographie (1980) jest tego przykładem. Wychodząc ze stanowiska bliskiego opinii Prousta, że fotografia byłaby pewnego rodzaju „zamrożoną” zewnętrzną „pamięcią faktów”, Barthes wykracza poza to stanowisko. Tekst jest szczegółową analizą zbieżności tych doświadczeń.

Abstract:
As statistics relating the policies of expanding access to higher education with the quality of education focus mainly on the impacts of affirmative actions on the quality of education offered by public HEIs. To extend this analysis to Prouni and Fies, this article aims to evaluate the effects of different grants and funding to the federal government through Prouni and Fies, on the Enade Concept, considering the years 2009, 2012 and 2015. For this, multilevel regression models with panel data were estimated. The results allow us to identify what Prouni Integral positively influences the quality of education, while receiving funding through Fies only has no applied effects. These results contribute to the debate related to the positive and negative aspects of these policies, altering the positive potential Prouni and the need for revisions, under different aspects, of the Fies.

In this paper I examine the ramifications of doubling and repetition in Nabokov’s Lolita, with reference to Proustian notions of recollection, which are adumbrated in the novel at various occasions, such as Humbert’s claim to have written an academic paper titled “The Proustian theme in a letter from Keats to Benjamin Bailey.” I begin by tracing out the contours of what such an article might have been like and then I apply these points to a reading of Lolita.
