This thesis considers proverbs, modified proverbs and curses in two novels of the Syrian coast: Muftaraq al-Maṭar by Yūsif al-Maḥmūd, and Anājīl al-Xarāb by Naufal Nayouf. Chapter two presents the theories of proverbs put forward by different scholars. It discusses how can proverbs be either literal or figurative. This thesis has three main aims. First, I will propose and explain a genre ascription for the sayings in Prov 10:1-22:16 – the ‘didactic proverb’. Second, I will analyse ‘openness’ as a textual feature, and show its contribution to the functions of this genre. Third, I will demonstrate how reading this way may influence our understanding of some key issues in Proverbs’ scholarship. Part 1 tackles the first and second aims. This dissertation suggests that, while the book of Proverbs is sometimes difficult to interpret and its redaction history is clearly complex, it has much to say on the important area of leadership. The aim of this essay is to find out how well Swedish adolescents understand concrete and abstract English proverbs, if concrete proverbs are easier to understand than abstracts ones, if there are differences between boys’ and girls’ and between monolinguals’ and bilinguals’ understanding of these. In a multiple-choice questionnaire, Swedish 7th to 9th graders read 15 short stories followed by three choices. This study illuminates the overall structure of the book of Proverbs by identifying an overlooked formal feature of Ancient Near Eastern Instructional literature. In this study I show that the translator of LXX Proverbs frequently rendered Hebrew parallelism in a form that is more closely parallel than the MT, that is, the colons of couplets correspond more closely to each other semantically and/or grammatically. The argument is based on the hypothesis that the Hebrew source of LXX Proverbs is similar to the MT in the cases discussed. The translator's fondness for producing closely corresponding lines needs to be considered when using LXX Proverbs as a source of variant readings. Abstract:

This thesis discusses five strands of research relating to studying the linguistic links between Taiwanese proverbs (TPs) and humour. Moreover, the discussions of cultural perspectives occurring in TPs are also included. Methodologies consist of qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods and content analysis approaches to generate and analyse the data. Questionnaires are used to collect the data for this study. Most of the sample and population are mainly from Fortune Institute of Technology where I teach in Taiwan. The findings indicated that TPs established closer linguistic links with humour.
