Abstract:
Our study deals with the use of proverbs as a tool of persuasion in political discourse. Within this study we have studied and analyzed the texts of Georgian and French political articles, speeches and proverbs used therein. The analysis revealed that the proverbs found and used by us in the French discourses were not only of French origin. Also, most of the proverbs found in the French discourses were used as titles of the articles. As for the Georgian proverbs, they consisted mainly of popular proverbs well known to the Georgian public. Georgia proverbs have rarely been cited as an article title. According to the general conclusion, the use of proverbs as a tool of persuasion in the political discourse by the politicians of both countries is quite relevant. It is effective when it is persuasive and at the same time causes an emotional reaction. Quoting the proverbs, the politicians base their thinking on positions. The proverb is one of the key argumentative techniques.

Abstract:
Karìn màganā̀ is a form of traditional cultural expression which has the status of a genre in Hausa oral literature. It is equivalent to a proverb. This paper presents examples of Hausa proverb usage in political discourse. The data were extracted from press articles published during the period of the Nigerian general election (February 2019). The research focuses on analysing discursive features of karìn màganā̀ and aspects of its contextual understanding and translation. In contemporary Hausa discourses proverbs perform textual and pragmatic functions. Each function in which a proverb is used changes its interpretation (representational meaning).

Abstract:
The subject of the proverb especially in the African context has been diversely explored by studies as Yankah (1989), Obeng (1996), Owomoyela (2005) and Fasiku (2006), this study however attempts a discourse and structural analysis of Yorùbá proverbs collected from oral interviews and native Yorùbá texts. First, based on a theory of the proverb as a discourse medium, the study reveals that proverbs are used to achieve different discourse acts and communicative goals by speakers. Native speakers use the proverb as a linguistic strategy of negotiating deep ideas and intentions. Second, the paper avers that Yorùbá proverb is structurally characterized by some lexical and grammatical devices which help to reinforce its communicative intelligibility and textuality. Thus, it examines the Yorùbá proverb both functionally and formally and underscores that it is a culturally and linguistically rich significant part of the Yorùbá speech community.

Abstract:
The study of ethnic proverbs in intercultural communication in English has recently become a promising research perspective. Chinese media in English, which communicate China’s message to the world, abound in native proverbs. In media coverage of international issues Chinese proverbs present an effective tool of China’s interaction with other countries. Proverbs convey China’s standpoint indirectly but firmly and may be viewed as China’s discursive strategy in media-based international discourse. The research deals with the questions of intercultural and international pragmatics of Chinese proverb quotations in Chinese media in English. The analysis was done on China’s intentions with native proverb quotations and other countries’ reactions to the proverb utterances.

Abstract:
Proverbs form part and parcel of intangible cultural heritage. They are handed down from generation to generation and retained in the collective long-term memory of a people, constituting part of their language and culture. The purpose of this paper is to revisit proverbs and examine some of their essential features in the system of language and in their creative use in discourse from a cross-language and a cross-cultural perspective. This approach calls for semantic and stylistic analyses of empirical material, which I have chosen from my own archive of English and Latvian proverbs. Linguistic examination of proverbs promotes an understanding of their func- tioning across the broad spectrum of languages and cultures, bringing out similarities in the figurative structure of their base form and their stylistic use in various types of discourse. Cognitive linguistic research on proverbs reveals an infinite diversity of expression of figurative thought: a manifestation of the capacity of the human mind for abstraction and generalisation. The study of figurative meaning of proverbs and its changes in discourse accounts for the uniqueness of their stylistic use in text, which lies in the creativity of the cognitive mind. Stylistic use of the same proverb and the same stylistic pattern yields a different creative form of expression. Novel stylistic instantiations emerge in discourse as a reflection of the development of figurative thought.

Abstract:
The present study investigates discrimination against a woman in the light of critical discourse analysis (CDA) in selected Iraqi proverbs, specifically those used in Baghdad and Basra. It aims to find out the ideological themes implied in the said proverbs about a woman. The significance of this study is to show the different forms of discrimination against a woman in the these proverbs. The proverbs indicating forms of discrimination against a woman are collected from three important reference books, namely, Aldileeshy(1968), Al-Hanafi (1962), Al-Hanafi (1964) in addition to some proverbs taken from Al-Zubaidi (2019). The proverbs selected for this study are analyzed according to their interpretation in the reference books in which they occur. Moreover, these proverbs are selected on the basis that they seem to have not been tackled from the perspective of CDA. Furthermore, to detect the ideological themes implied in the aforementioned proverbs, a qualitative approach is used. In addition, thirty four proverbs are selected and only nine examples are analyzed to reveal the sexist ideologies whether in the structure or the structure and the function of the previously mentioned proverbs. The findings reached at in the present study include the following forms of discrimination against a woman: hating the birth of a girl child, vilifying a woman, violating her, discriminating against her in terms of gender affinity, marital status and beauty, woman inferiority to a man and undervaluing a woman's work. Additionally, most of the proverbs selected convey discriminatory concepts against a woman through the structure and the function whereas a few of them convey such concepts through the structure only. Further, only one proverb referring to discrimination against a woman through the function occurs.

Abstract:
This article addresses the problem of definition and typology of discourse. The author gives a definition of paremic discourse and describes its types. The first type of the two includes proverbs as discourse structures of different grades of complexity which are samples for building new literary texts. The second type of paremic discourse has a prototypical dialogical structure. Here a proverb is a remark which is the instrument of speech tactics used for achieving a certain communicative strategy. The approach to discourse as a dialogical interaction Makes it possible to study proverbial texts in everyday dialogues.

The concepts of ‘short story’ and ‘proverb’ will be defined as part of the introductory section of this discourse. Thereafter, a summary of the short story will be provided, to lay a good foundation. Then, the dominant proverbs in the story shall be identified and listed before the actual analysis. While the various domains of the proverbs will be alluded to in the discussion, the proverbs will not be categorised into these. Each proverb will be critically analysed by focusing on its origin, structure, literal and figurative meanings in general, and its meaning in the context of the story. The latter will also comprise of the effectiveness of the proverbs in the narrative, the author’s intentions and some cultural aspects which are highlighted.

Abstract:
Abstract Proverbs are notoriously hard to define, and various approaches to this problem are currently in use in the field of paremiology. The discussion in this paper develops a marker-based proverb definition based on linguistic criteria which is suitable for proverb research in linguistic paremiology. The basis of this definition is empirically supported by the results of an experiment with invented German proverbs containing different types of proverbial markers built on the design described in Arora (1984). The results of the experiment show the importance of proverbial markers for the successful identification of proverbs in discourse, thus allowing the establishment of a first hierarchy of proverbial markers. On a methodological level, the experimental design introduced provides insights into proverb structure and the nature of proverbiality. Furthermore, the results underline the fact that proverbial markers are not optional, but should be an essential aspect of every linguistic proverb definition.

Abstract:
This thesis aims at analyzing the collective memory content imbedded in an oral literature speech performance, right from the message transmission to its understanding and preservation. We are to explain how an oral literature speech production and its performance can retitute the Loma cultural values. The epic retraces the history of a former war leader among the Loma people of the Republic of Guinea; a history which still remains a vibrant part of the people's culture in that country. Because it doesn't exist any former written version of the epic, we ensured its transcription into Lɔɠɔmagooh language (a loma variant) and also its translation into French language.Beside the geographical and cultural presentation of the Loma area and people, the real corpus analysis in which we mobilize both performance and rethorics also takes into account the multicoding nature of the social, historical and cultural messages and their reception dynamics. We focus attention on the specific discursive technics of oral literature or tradition which exist in tales and proverbs. However, our work is not just limited to transcription and translation of the epic production. Our analysis shows how oral tradition constitutes an essential dimension of the epic genre whose discursive and referential deepness is the reflection of the artistic and memorial work of the orator

Abstract:
Como os provérbios são perpetuados na memória coletiva, ao serem retextualizados evidenciam a criatividade do enunciador das manchetes e títulos de notícias que transforma o perene, o previsível no inusitado para surpreender o leitor como é o caso do Jornal da Tarde.<br>The aim of this paper is to research, demonstrate and analyze in which way the aspects of orality are expressed in the journalist written text, more precisely in headlines and news titles from Jornal da Tarde. Within this research, a study about journalistic language has been made, which presents. The current language joined to the spoken and written language phenomena which are well explored by the newspaper. Our paper is concentrated in specific studies about the headline and news titles which give sight to the news printed by the newspaper and have the aim of calling the readers attention. The headlines and news titles, which were based on proverbial sentences, have been selected. However, these fixed formulas got adapted, which is called reenunciation and retextualization (détournement). This retextualization provokes humor, critic or ironic effect in parodying the original proverb which is a way of using the looser language to call the readers attention. All this research and analyze process was based in Discourse Analysis, Conversation Analysis, studies about journalistic language and papers about proverbs. As the proverbs are perpetuated in people memory, as soon as they are retextualized, they evidence the creativity of the headline and news titles announcer which changes the perennial, the predictable to the unexpected to surprise the reader, as seen in Jornal da Tarde.

Abstract:

The general objective of our research is to analyze the discursive functioning of the aphorisation and their insertion in the theatrical text Jesus Homem in the perception of new effects of meaning caused in the text. In order to achieve this goal, we set as specific objectives: 1) to identify the occurrence of the aphorisation in the theatrical text; 2) to examine the implications of sense effect in discourse analysis. In order to reach these objectives, we are based on Maingueneau (2014, 2015), to deal with the discursive perspective of the aphorisation; Líndez (2014), Obelkevich (1997), Urbano (2002), from the textual conception of proverbs. The corpus is formed by phrases highlighted of the theatrical text, consisting of two acts. The research carried out allowed us to observe that the crystallized forms of proverbs and beyond proverbs (aphorisation) reinforced the constitution of a collective, the gathering of values by a thesaurus, and the validation of the hyperenunciator, which provoked a new social order in the construction of a discourse on a new ideal of society. We conclude that the discourse that circulated on the discursive platform of the theater, specifically, in the play Jesus Homem, produced the effects of subversion, through aphorisation, which constitute an important subsidy for linguistic studies<br>Este trabalho situa-se na linha de pesquisa Texto e Discurso nas modalidades Oral e Escrita, do Programa de Estudos Pós-Graduados em Língua Portuguesa da Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo e tem como tema as aforizações em Jesus homem, de Plínio Marcos.

Abstract:
This study entitled "words and pictures in black Africa : the case of the kpadokpili or the string of proverbs of Kpelle people" examines some essential fields of the research of paremiology, by scrutinizing some problems of sign language. We place the proverbs in human context and bring out their specificities in relation to the other forms of oral communication. Secondly, we analyzed different types of syntax structures found the logic and functional values of the proverbs. The most original aspect of this work is the analysis of these proverbs in relation with the figurative objects. Abstract:
In a first part the thesis lays down the principles of a sociolinguistics of the religious text : what the situation of the oral tradition is in religious communities ; applying to it such philosophical and linguistic notions as : text and theme, dialogue and diglossy, connotation-symbol-sacrament ; aiming at determining what the primitive split is between the language and the social, between the two poles : the economic and the religious. A re-reading of rethoric has been done as a theory of oralness, image and subject's ground ; the modern linguistic theories concerning the analysis of utterances, speeches and narratibes are examined. A second part is devoted to the diversified, exegetical, lithurgical, preach and thematic approach to a primitive religious text : the beatitudes and especially "blessed are the poor in spirit". The last part describes the evolution of this text in modern times, relying upon manuscripts, rough copies and recordings. The essential processes of the religious discourse and the link between preaching and conversation are brought forward as a result. It is therefore a contribution to what an epistemology of sociolinguistics could be, giving both an account of the social and the corporal, of the cultural and the historical in oralness. In the "religious discourse" it is one of the two possible general types of discourse which comes forth, and in the analysis of the preaching tradition of "blessed are the poor in spirit", the function of maxims and proverbs are emphasised as composing themes of discursive traditions

Abstract:
This chapter explores how Persian proverbial metaphors are used in discourse to frame Iran’s nuclear program. To that end, contextual uses of a sample of Persian proverbs were analysed in terms of Conceptual Metaphor Theory. The results demonstrate that proverbs’ scope of operation goes way beyond their conventional functions. They are used to propagate pessimism, express sarcasm, make accusations, threaten and humiliate the rival camp, fabricate a new political reality, and manipulate the content and courses of action. The research also finds that proverbs are apt tools for framing complex socio-political issues, as they encapsulate a bundle of integrated figurative conceptualisations, providing users with ready-to-use conceptual slots to apply to complex scenarios with multiple roles and relations. Finally yet importantly, the research shows that the analysis of proverbs in discourse context provides a more comprehensive view of proverbs by completing the chain of association between the specific-level schema, generic-level schema and the immediate context of use.

In the chapter, I provide an account of metaphorical proverbs within the new framework of extended conceptual metaphor theory, or ECMT, for short (Kövecses 2020). I rely especially on the multilevel and contextualist aspects of this view. I argue that ECMT can account for why many proverbs are widespread in the world’s languages; why, at the same time, many proverbs can also exhibit cultural differences; and why proverbs can have very specific meanings in particular discourse situations. Finally, I show that context plays a very different role in metaphorical proverbs than in non-proverbial uses of metaphor.

This chapter examines the presidential addresses delivered by the Ugandan president during the Covid-19 lockdown. It invokes genre analysis to examine the nature of the rhetorical moves that characterised the Presidential statements. It also employs critical discourse analysis to examine the linguistic devices that the president invoked during the addresses. Focusing on the extempore narrative episodes emanating from 20 presidential addresses, the chapter explicates the nature of utterances (rebukes, warnings and reassurances) the President made. It demonstrates how the President not only invoked the war rhetoric, metaphors, and proverbs to sustain the attention of his audience but also to explain the science of the new pandemic, justify the continued lockdown and other restrictive measures, and rally support from the citizens.

Abstract:
The chapter proposes to investigate the implications of the proverbial phrase to be in the same boat in international debates about climate change. The study exposes the endorsed or disputed uses of the proverb. I analyse its exploitation by different discourse producers who convey different opinions. The data are extracted from various texts and speeches produced (or translated) in English. This research illustrates how the proverb can be exploited to fit different cultural traditions and different environmental concerns. The aim of the chapter is to identify the different arguments promoted by the use of the proverb. It also highlights the aspects of the proverb that may not correspond to the reality of climate change. This gives rise to argumentative exploitations using related metaphorical expressions. With reliance on cognitive metaphor theories (Lakoff 1993, 2004, 2010), and on metaphor scenarios in particular (Musolff 2004, 2016, 2019a), the occurrences discussed below demonstrate how the metaphorical image of the earth is a container has been challenged through the depiction of the earth is a boat. Indeed, the source concept boat comprises particular characteristics that can cause division among discourse producers to the extent that climate change debates may revolve around the use and misuse of the proverb. The chapter demonstrates that the proverbial phrase to be in the same boat involves precarious implications in environmental discourse.

AbstractThis contribution first searches for historical and empirical evidence for whether and how curricula act or acted as a measure of public education. The problem is explicated on account of a short history of curriculum work and distinguished in a analytical, a political, programmatical and practical discourse of curriculum work. Curriculum work always underlies premises of planning, learning and effects. Three models are finally developed and brought in touch with the different discourses. Curriculum work proves to be an attempt to make publicly acceptable the empirically impossible accountability of schools.

Abstract:
This chapter explores the manipulation of discourse on Twitter at the basis of the climate lockdown conspiracy theory. By analysing a dataset of tweets supporting the existence of climate lockdowns, the chapter looks at how the categories traditionally employed to define manipulation in language are applied when manipulation takes place in digital discourse. The new media is characterised by the expansion and re-elaboration of the classic dynamics of textual production and interpretation, and this is particularly evident when digital and semiotic affordances are used to manipulate discourse. The analysis of the climate change conspiracy theory proves that the architecture and affordances of social media allow, or even encourage, or at least quietly endorse, the legitimation of discourse through manipulation, especially news discourse.

This paper explores the nexus between the use of the modern Greek language and interconfessional transfer, focusing on the early modern vernacular Greek editions of the New Testament. The point of reference for later editions was the translation sponsored by Kyrillos Lukaris and completed by the monk Maximus Kalliupolitis, which was printed in Geneva in 1638. We take steps toward a preliminary analysis of the work done by the editors, who prepared revised versions of Kalliupolitis’ translation printed in 1703/1705 and 1710 and who were strongly supported and influenced by the Halle Pietism. This topic of investigation proves to be connected to a discourse concerning the identity and normativity of modern Greek, as well as the missionary practices and goals pursued by the Ottoman Greeks and German Pietists involved in them.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the diffusion of linguistic change through a case study focusing on the adoption of tío as a vocative and discourse marker in the 1970s and 1980s. Two strands of research are used to explain this case: Firstly, Labov’s (2010) theory of diffusion in linguistic change is used to provide essential insights about the groups of speakers who initiate and promote such changes. Second, philological information is considered, encompassing factors beyond groups of speakers: the linguistic features of the constructions involved in a change, the historical context in which the change occurred, the associated social practices, the influence of specific locations (cities, neighborhoods), and also the impact of influential individuals in promoting one linguistic solution over another. It is only when both sets of information are brought together that the necessary and sufficient information about linguistic change can be achieved. The 20th century proves particularly suitable for conducting this type of research.

Abstract:
AbstractWhile on the international plane Germany has as strong a position as one could wish for, a second appeal to the ICJ does not seem advisable. Though not formally estopped from challenging Sentenza 238/2014, Germany would at least face a principled contradiction (Wertungswiderspruch). Like Italy, Germany takes the position that international obligations must be disregarded should they be found incompatible with fundamental rights enshrined in the national constitution. Concerning the underlying conflict, another formally strong German position proves to have inherent shortcomings. To argue that, as far as Italian citizens are concerned, all matters of compensation had been dealt with comprehensively in the German–Italian lump sum agreement of 1961 carries some conviction. However, the limitations of that agreement, the erosion of the individual’s strict mediatisation in international law, and recent German compensation schemes for other victims of World War II (WWII) have fuelled a growing discontent with this final settlement. Having been doubly denied recognition as victims by the injustices of non-retroactivity and of differentiation, the Italian WWII victims ‘in oblivion’ have pursued compensation claims for over a decade now. It would go too far to argue an individual claim for financial compensation under international law for historic wrongs. The principle of intertemporal law, however, has its merits as well as its defects. This chapter argues in favour of mildly piercing the veil of intertemporality by reliance on fundamental ethical principles as part of the law in force already at the time of the original violation. A breach in this kind of obligation should give rise to an obligatio de negotiando under the principle of just satisfaction. Such a legal construction takes up the idea that in most of the recent cases of ‘history taken to court’, compensation is but a secondary aim, the primary aim being to ‘tell one’s own story’ as a counter-narrative to hegemonic discourse. By entering into negotiations with the victims ‘in oblivion’, Germany—and Italy—could and should attempt to finally solve what has been and remains a fundamentally unjust situation.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Aim/Purpose. The most crucial aspects of teaching a foreign language to more advanced learners are building an awareness of discourse modes, how to regulate discourse, and the pragmatic properties of discourse components. However, in different languages, the connections and structure of discourse are ensured by different linguistic means which makes matters complicated for the learner. Background. By uncovering regularities in a foreign language and comparing them with patterns in one’s own tongue, the corpus research method offers the student unique opportunities to acquire linguistic knowledge about discourse markers. This paper reports on an investigation of the functions of multi-word discourse markers. Methodology. In our research, we combine the alignment model of the phrase-based statistical machine translation and manual treatment of the data in order to examine English multi-word discourse markers and their equivalents in Lithuanian and Hebrew translations by researching their changes in translation. After establishing the full list of multi-word discourse markers in our generated parallel corpus, we research how the multi-word discourse markers are treated in translation. Contribution. Creating a parallel research corpus to identify multi-word expressions used as discourse markers, analyzing how they are translated into Lithuanian and Hebrew, and attempting to determine why the translators made the choices add value to corpus-driven research and how to manage discourse. Findings. Our research proves that there is a possible context-based influence guiding the translation to choose a particle or other lexical item integration in Lithuanian or Hebrew translated discourse markers to express the rhetorical domain which could be related to the so-called phenomenon of “over-specification.” Recommendations for Practitioners. The comparative examination of discourse markers provides language instructors and translators with more specific information about the roles of discourse markers. Recommendations for Researchers. Understanding the multifunctionality of discourse markers provides new avenues for discourse marker application in translation research. Impact on Society. The current study may be a useful method to strengthen students’ language awareness and analytic skills and is particularly important for students specializing in English philology or translation. Beyond the empirical research, an extensive parallel data resource has been created to be openly used. Future Research. It should be noted that the observed phenomenon of “over-specification” could be analyzed further in future research.

Abstract:
The article examines the problem of self-identification of Russian citizens at the present stage of development of society, examines the processes of constructing national-civic identity in Russian-language network discourse, and demonstrates that metaphorization plays a significant role in such processes, making it possible to explicate the most significant features of the constructed idealized community “Russians/Russians”. It is shown that self-identification of Russian-speaking participants in network communication is carried out according to a formula that includes a target sphere (“Russians/Russians”) and numerous source spheres of metaphorical expansion, which include “Home”, “Family”, “Organism”, “Reservoirs” and “Substances”. It is concluded that most metaphors actualize the passionarity of the Russian ethnos, its ability to unite and assimilate other peoples, which convincingly proves that the spontaneous non-professional self-identification of modern Russians does not contradict the principles that many philosophers, cultural scientists and sociologists have paid attention to.

Abstract:
Purpose – examine the European Union (EU) integrated political crisis response system, within the scope of the EU common security and defence policy and the present value of negotiations as a tool. Research methodology – a systematic analysis of the scientific literature and descriptive methods were applied to analyse actual and recent theoretical scientific work on integrating the European Union security and defence policy. We were discussing the concept of security from the theoretical perspective of constructivism, presenting the essential features. The empirical part of the work proves how discourse theory may help develop both negotiations and constructivism methodology. Findings – Negotiation theory play an important role in crisis management, developed proposals for the theory and methodology of negotiations. Research limitations – research does not cover negotiations in the context of military actions; the research examines the only civil empirical case of COVID-19 crises. Practical implications – presented conclusions show how the development of negotiations theory may substantially increase responsiveness to any EU crisis. Originality/Value – this study as interdisciplinary combined mixed methodologies: constructivism methodology of threat identification was compared with discourse theory (Austin’s) speech act.

Abstract:
Part of the contemporary theories of urban morphology focus on a dual debate: on one side, analytical and&#x0D; historic studies demonstrate the intensity, permanence and irreversibility of the territorial expansion of the&#x0D; urbanization process, forming the disperse city paradigm; on the other side, studies that aim to refrain this&#x0D; dispersion, providing morphological answers based on rescuing spatial patterns of the “traditional” city, form&#x0D; the compact city paradigm. Unlike the disperse city, the compact city discourse has not been analyzed from&#x0D; a historical perspective, identifying the network of knowledge and theoretical influences that constructed it.&#x0D; This paper starts to cover this gap, speculating on how compactness and dispersion present themselves in&#x0D; the recent city history, and how the contemporary compact city discourse has been constructed, a discourse&#x0D; which, despite the strong critics, has not diminished its attraction and convincing power.

It is only “natural that proponents and opponents of Autonomous Weapon Systems (AWS) will seek to establish a definition that serves their aims and interests. The definitional discussion will not be a value-neutral discussion of facts, but ultimately one driven by political and strategic motivations” (UNIDIR, 2017). Though somewhat of a sullen statement, conceptually echoing the self-serving outcome-oriented nature of ‘conflict’ espoused by the proverb, ‘all is fair in love and war’ (attributed to the poet John Lyly), the aforementioned stipulation by the United Nations Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR), coupled with the belief that some States are reluctant to engage in a broader definitional exercise, have recently been proven rather prophetic. In effect, the concepts above have somewhat accurately described the existing state of the discourse surrounding the technology in question. Specifically, the divided stance on definitions can be evidenced in a wide array of publications. These range from and include the 2024 ‘collation of responses’ report compiled by the Implementation Support Unit of the Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (UNODA), the UNODA 2023 report, which focused specifically on individual definitions and characterisations from multiple countries, as well as results from domestic inquiries (such as those arising from the House of Lords AI in Weapon Systems Committee Report and the subsequent UK Government response). The latter two documents provide an informative snapshot as to the potential reasoning behind this discourse, reverberating the initial quotation’s poignancy. Specifically, the House of Lords (2023) Committee acknowledged the United Kingdom’s lack of an operational definition for Autonomous Weapon Systems, alongside the challenges such an absence may pose regarding regulation. Yet, the UK Government’s response stipulated that while it respected the general arguments put forward by the Committee, it did not intend to adopt an official or operative definition for AWS. The reasoning? Definitions are typically an aid to policy making and may serve as a starting point for a new legal instrument prohibiting certain types of systems, which would represent a threat to UK defence interests (Ministry of Defence, 2024). This stance, albeit not unique to the UK, aptly demonstrates that the suggested apprehension regarding the adverse effects of adopting a wider definition, in so far as bringing the legitimacy or legality of encompassed technologies into question (UNIDIR, 2017), seems to have retained its prevalence.Irrespective of the explicit or implicit recognition of the extent to which International Humanitarian Laws (IHL) should apply with respect to the potential use of weapons systems based on emerging technologies (UNIDIR, 2023), namely the adherence to the principles of Distinction, Proportionality and Precaution in attack, it remains necessary to conduct an inquiry and ascertain what a value-neutral definition of AWS can be. Consequently, the effectiveness of human oversight must also be reviewed. Not only does the human-element operate as an integral thematic component of the existing definitions but the value of its position as a pre-requisite for adherence needs to be ascertained.
