Abstract:
The primary focus of this dissertation is the doctrine of the Providence of God and it is approached from a distinctive perspective – that of the doctrine of the Trinity. Its fundamental thesis is that the adoption of a trinitarian perspective on Providence provides us with a conceptual paradigm in which varying theological emphases, which often divide understandings of Providence, are best understood in a form of paradoxical tension or creative balance with each being correctly understood only in the context that the other provides. To demonstrate this, it addresses four issues of Providence

Abstract:
Thesis advisor: Peter J. Kreeft
Thesis advisor: Ronald K. Tacelli
This thesis explores and defends the compatibility of divine involvement and human freedom. It argues that, far from determining human actions, divine foreknowledge and providence stand in a unique metaphysical relationship to human free will. This relationship is explored through a creative appropriation of St. Thomas Aquinas' theory of participation. Divine knowledge and causation transcend ordinary models of knowledge and causation, operating on a different metaphysical plane than human speculative knowledge and created

Thomas, Amber Robin. ""God has a plan for your life" : Personalized Life Providence (PLP) in postwar American evangelicalism." Thesis, University of Edinburgh, 2018. http://hdl.handle.net/1842/33208.

Full text
Abstract:
Based largely upon popular periodicals, archival materials, conference addresses, and mass-market books, this thesis combines intellectual and cultural history to explore how the meaning behind the evangelical commonplace, "God has a plan for your life," changed in post-World War II America, ultimately exchanging an ethos of self-denial for self-fulfillment by the early 1980s. The term "Personalized Life Providence" (PLP) is proposed for the integration of three Reformation-rooted ideas-vocation, providence, and discernment-into the discussion of finding God's plan for one's life. Full text
Abstract:
The doctrine of divine providence is not always perceived as being both relevant to the 20th century and consistent with the Reformed theological tradition. This study compares and contrasts the father of Reformed theology, John Calvin, and the 20th century Reformed theologian, Karl Barth, in their respective doctrines of providence and the method by which they arrive at them. The first three chapters set out Calvin's doctrines of the knowledge of God, providence and predestination, doctrines linked together both in method and in content. Because the Word of God is broader than the incarnate J
