AbstractThe aim of this study was to test the hypothesis of the presence of hybrids between Schistosoma guineensis and S. haematobium in the Estuaire province (Western Gabon). Egg morphometry and single-stranded conformational polymorphism (SSCP) analysis on adult worms were used in order to characterize the schistosome populations of two sites. The morphology of the eggs showed three morphotypes: S. haematobium, S. guineensis and intermediate morphotypes, but the eggs of the morphotype S. guineensis were smaller compared to the values found in the literature. Furthermore, the SSCP analysis of the adult schistosomes showed that all the patterns corresponded to that of S. haematobium and gave evidence that hybrids were absent from our samples.

Human herpesvirus 8 (HHV-8) is the etiological agent of all forms of Kaposi’s sarcoma (KS). K1 gene studies have identified five major molecular genotypes with geographical clustering. This study described the epidemiology of HHV-8 and its molecular diversity in Gabon among Bantu and Pygmy adult rural populations and KS patients. Plasma antibodies against latency-associated nuclear antigens (LANA) were searched by indirect immunofluorescence. Buffy coat DNA samples were subjected to polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to obtain a K1 gene fragment. We studied 1020 persons; 91% were Bantus and 9% Pygmies. HHV-8 seroprevalence was 48.3% and 36.5% at the 1:40 and 1:160 dilution thresholds, respectively, although the seroprevalence of HHV-8 is probably higher in Gabon. These seroprevalences did not differ by sex, age, ethnicity or province. The detection rate of HHV-8 K1 sequence was 2.6% by PCR. Most of the 31 HHV-8 strains belonged to the B genotype (24), while the remaining clustered within the A5 subgroup (6) and one belonged to the F genotype. Additionally, we reviewed the K1 molecular diversity of published HHV-8 strains in Africa. This study demonstrated a high seroprevalence of HHV-8 in rural adult populations in Gabon and the presence of genetically diverse strains with B, A and also F genotypes.

In Gabon, the situation of Human African Trypanosomosis (HAT) remains unclear. In addition, several historical foci existing in many provinces have not been explored for over 15 years. Yet many studies have shown that this country has to offer favorable ecosystems for the development of tsetse major vectors of HAT. To verify a risk of transmission of sleeping sickness, a tsetse inventory was conducted in the province of Ogooué Ivindo historic home of HAT. Vavoua and Nzi traps were placed in four characteristic habitats of the province: National Park Ivindo, Zadié Village, Forest of Zadié and baï (clearing) of Momba. A total of 2383 flies were captured: 1680 flies in the clearing of Momba, 437 flies in the primary forest Zadié, 139 in the National Park Ivindo and 12 in Zadié village. Moreover, these flies were divided into 7 species Glossina frezili, Glossina fusca congolensis, Glossina nashi, Glossina palpalis palpalis, Glossina tabaniformis, Glossina fuscipes fuscipes and Glossina tachinoides. Glossina palpalis palpalis (46%) was the most abundant species followed by Glossina fusca congolensis (21%) and Glossina nashi (16%). Glossina fuscipes fuscipes (6%), Glossina frezili (4%), Glossina tabaniformis (4%) and Glossina tachinoides (3%) were the least caught species. These results have shown that the province of Ogooué Ivindo still remains infested by tsetse flies. Also, further study monitoring these insects is essential to clarify the epidemiological importance of these vectors on human health in this province.

A new species of the freshwater crab genus Potamonautes MacLeay, 1838, is described from Ivindo National Park in Sofala Province, Gabon, Central Africa. Potamonautes nheenae n. sp. is morphologically distinct from the other species of this genus found in Gabon and nearby countries in Central Africa, and is most closely related to P. paecilei (A. Milne-Edwards, 1886) from the Lower Congo River basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The new species is recognised by a unique combination of morphological characters of the adult male first gonopod, anterior sternum, mouthparts, and major cheliped. Illustrations of P. nheenae n. sp. are provided and differences with congeners found in Central Africa are discussed. In addition, the male gonopods, pleon, and sternum of the unusual freshwater crab Erimetopus brazzae (A. Milne-Edwards, 1886), are illustrated for the first time since its description in 1886, following the discovery of the first known male specimen of this species in the collection of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University.

Human African Trypanosomiasis (HAT) is an infectious disease due to a protozoa parasite of the Trypanosoma genus. In West and Central Africa, this disease is caused by the subspecies Trypanosoma brucei gambiense. Several foci of this disease are currently active and causing the death of hundreds of people in endemic areas. In this article, we report two cases of gambiense HAT in one Indonesian and one Gabonese men in two historical foci of Gabon in 2019. Both patients had fever with temperatures above 38°C, an altered state of consciousness, cachexia, and multiple dermabrasions on the abdomen related to scratching lesions. The diagnostic revealed second-stage infection of both patients with T. b. gambiense; this result was confirmed by a polymerase chain reaction assay. Despite treatment with a combination of eflornithine and nifurtimox, as recommended by the World Health Organization for late-stage T. b. gambiense HAT, one of the two patients died. Thus, these cases highlight the importance of early HAT diagnosis and prompt patient care to fight effectively against this disease.

Notre travail, intitulé « La préhistoire de la vallée de la Nyanga (province de la Nyanga - Gabon) », se propose d'étudier les sites paléolithiques de Tchibanga. Au total, nous avons découvert cinq sites : Mougoutsi, Dilangui 1, Dilangui 2, Mavoundi 5 et Mavoundi 6. L' ensemble des sites a livré une diversité d'outils. Tous les outils ont été ramassés en surface. L'étude des sites et du matériel a montré de nombreuses similitudes avec d'autres sites du Gabon et de l' Afrique centrale. En effet, il y a de fortes similarités du point de vue de la nature des sites d'une part, et de la typologie du matériel récolté. Aussi, l'étude typologique des objets lithiques de Tchibanga, en l'absence de fouilles nous permettent de penser que la préhistoire de Tchibanga présente des ressemblances avec des industries sangoennes mais aussi lupembo-tshitoliennes rencontrées ailleurs au Gabon.

Ce travail est une contribution a la connaissance du Paléolithique du Gabon. (Afrique centrale. De nombreuses régions de ce pays ont fait l'objet de peu d'études. C'est le cas de la Nyanga située au sud ou de rares recherches se sont faites dans une optique d'inventaire de sites et dobjets. Sur la base du matériel lithique provenant d'un nouveau site (Milolo) et deux sites déjà signalés (Sanga-forêt et Manfila), nous dépassons ce cadre en adoptant une démarche typo-technologique. Provenant essentiellement de sites de surface les objets lithiques constituent les témoins privilégies de la richesse du Paléolithique de la Nyanga. Les Hommes préhistoriques ont exploite ici un éventail de matières locales. Le débitage est réalise par percussion directe au percuteur dur et/ou au percuteur tendre. Le débitage « pseudo Levallois » parait avoir été pratique. L'outillage, divers dans I'ensemble, est marque par des pics pour les sites anciens et des éclats retouches pour le site récent.

Cette thèse consacrée au Gabon examine la double problématique de la viabilité du processus de décentralisation en tant que logique de gestion administrative de proximité et de l'implication réelle des élus locaux et autres forces sociales dans ce mode de gestion municipale. Le cadre géographique d'étude est restreint aux villes de l'Estuaire : Libreville, Owendo, Ntoum, Cocobeach et Kango. Dans le contexte d'une démocratie liée à la gouvernance locale, et où les partenariats font part des mécanismes d'encadrement publics, ce réseau urbain, fortement déséquilibré, sert d'exemple à l'analyse du rôle des municipalités, notamment à partir des pratiques employées par des élites locales dans la gestion urbaine. L'exploration de cet objet montre que les sénateurs, députés et maires forment une configuration relationnelle de type fusionnelle dans laquelle les maires sont en position défavorable. Ils sont contrôlés et devancés par des logiques qui leur exigent des actions collectives. Cependant, une analyse comparative de leurs rôles permet de distinguer deux modes de gestion urbaine : une gestion municipale et une gestion politique. Les liens entre ces modes de gestion démontrent que la dimension contraignante de la forme de décentralisation ne disparaît pas, même lorsque les aptitudes des maires évoluent vers un comportement autonome. En l'espèce, il est inféré que la délégation représente l'une des composantes structurelles de la forme de décentralisation à travers une économie de la déconcentration : sur le choix des politiques municipales et leurs rapports au territoire, l'influence des élites et des agents de l'Etat limite l'exercice de la libre gestion municipale.

La crise des provinces gabonaises perdure et la qualité de la vie des populations ne cesse de se dégrader. Les politiques d’aménagement du territoire fondées sur le modèle dirigiste et qui privilégiaient une centralisation absolue du pouvoir ont engendré les inégalités territoriales. Cela se traduit spatialement par une diversité des paysages. Qu’ils soient urbains, ruraux ou identitaires, ces paysages s’offrent aux regards des promeneurs, des automobilistes et des chercheurs qui les scrutent à la recherche d’indices, des lois ayant présidées à leurs émergences, à leurs diffusions ou à leurs disparitions. C’est l’entrée que nous avons privilégié pour cette étude. Depuis cinq ans, les autorités gabonaises sont à la recherche des voies de rattrapage. Elles privilégient à cet effet, les fêtes rotatives. Elles ont donné au gouvernement l’occasion d’investir dans les différentes capitales provinciales : restaurer, moderniser et améliorer les villes. Malheureusement, les réalisations sont souvent en – deçà des projections et des espérances aussi bien des gouvernants que des gouvernés. Cette impasse nous a obligés à rechercher une autre voie de développement territorial. Après avoir résumé les grandes lignes de la construction du Gabon, la thèse se penche sur la province de la Ngounié. Elle examine à la lueur des notions, des concepts et des outils (télédétection, cartographie, photo-interprétation) les dynamiques des paysages de ladite province. La thèse propose un outil de rattrapage « la provincialisation » pour aboutir à un développement territorial raisonné et maîtrisé<br>The crisis of the Gabonese provinces continues and the quality of the life of the populations does not stop degrading. The politics of land settlement based on the model interventionist and which privileged an absolved centralization from the power gave the territorial disparities. It is spatially translated by a variety of the landscapes. That they are urban, rural or identical, these landscapes offer themselves to the glances of the walkers, the motorists and the researchers who scrutinize them in. For five years, the Gabonese authorities are in search of the ways of making up. They privilege for that purpose, the rotary holidays; they gave to the government the occasion to invest in the various provincial capitals: to restore, modernize and to improve cities. Unfortunately, the realizations are often there - down of the projections and expectations of the government and citizens. This impasse obliged us to look for another way of territorial development. Having summarized the main lines of the construction of the Gabon, the thesis bends over the province of Ngounié. It examines in the light of the notions, concepts and tools (remote sensing, cartography, photo-interpretation) the dynamics of the landscapes of the mentioned province. La forte croissance demographique dont la province de l'estuaire est l'objet depuis une trentaine d'annees est sans doute le fait le plus marquant de sa metamorphose. Peuplee a peine de 61. 520 habitants en 1960, cette province renferme actuellement pres de 45,63% de la population totale du pays. Au-dela de cette evolution numerique, c'est surtout le rythme de croissance de cette population que l'on estime a 37,02% qui semble retenir notre attention. En effet, si nous restons convaincus que tous les facteurs (croit naturel et dynamique migratoire globale) ont participe de maniere synergique a cette croissance demographique, l'importance prise par la mobilite geographique interne est a notre avis le facteur le plus determinant de celle-ci. De la logique de peuplement au developpement des mouvements plus contemporains dont les motivations sont essentiellement professionnels et scolaires, l'estuaire est progressivement devenue le principal bassin de reception de l'immigration interieure au gabon. Ce role d'aspirateur demographique que lui confere ses differentes vocations (historique, politique, administrative et economique) est en amont d'un ensemble de problemes dont les plus revelateurs sont: le renforcement des desequilibres demographiques entre les zones de depart et la province de l'estuaire, la croissance demesure et anarchique de la ville de libreville (principale agglomeration de la province), la conquete des espaces pionniers, la montee de la speculation fonciere et de la fracture sociale en zone urbaine. Sans vouloir fournir des elements de reponse a ces differents problemes dont l'enracinement et le developpement deviennent structurels, l'auteur tient essentiellement a attirer l'attention des pouvoirs publics sur un phenomene qui a toujours ete regarde avec marginalite et dont les consequences ont profondement ete minimisees.

Le woleu-ntem est limite au nord par le cameroun, au nord-ouest par la guinee-equatoriale et a l'est par la republique du congo. Ces frontieres sont le resultat de nombreuses conventions europeennes: convention franco-allemande (1908), convention franco-espagnole (1905). La frontiere avec le congo fait l'objet d'un traitement particulier. Elle est d'origine intra-imperiale. Le woleu-ntem souffre de plusieurs maux qui sont a l'origine de son sous-developpement: le centralisme des institutions gabonaises, le monolithisme economique agricole (non transformation de produits de base). Sa dependance economique et commerciale vis-a-vis de la capitale qui abrite aujourd'hui 60% de la population gabonaise et des pays voisins est execessive. Cette derniere est la consequence directe du centralisme. A dire vrai, l'economie du woleu-ntem n'existe pas. Elle est totalement dependante du secteur souterrain. C'est ce qui montre son caractere peripherique. Mais le woleu-ntem ne peut s'offrir le luxe de devenir prisonnier d'un centralisme librevillois. Un amenagement de l'espace s'impose: integration a l'espace-gabon et a l'espace sous-regional<br>Woleu-ntem is borded to the north by camerun, to the north-west by equatorial guinea and to the east by the republic of congo. Woleu-ntem's boundaries are the result of maint conventions: franco-german (1908) with camerun, franco-spanish (1905) with equatorial guinea. The boundary with the congo's republic is intra-imperial (franco-french). Woleu-ntem is suffering from much deseases that are to the origin of its underdevelopment: centralism of gabone's institutions, economic monolithism based upon the one secteur of agriculture. Add its economy and commercial dependance face to libreville and neighbouring countries. In fact, woleu-ntem's economy is not. Woleu-ntem economy depends on an underground economy. Hence its peripheric position. But at the end of this century, woleu-ntem can not to treat oneself the wealth of becoming the prisoner of centralism. An other offer is possible: integration in gabon- espace and integration in regional espace

Pays riche, producteur de pétrole, le Gabon accuse un très grand déficit en matière de transports et de communications. Au sortir de l'Indépendance, le pays a adopté une politique d'aménagement du territoire qui a débouché sur l'élaboration des plans quinquennaux de développement. L'objectif était de désenclaver le territoire. Les premiers plans et les politiques conduites dans les années soixante ont visé à mettre en place des liaisons nationales routières, aéroportuaires et des télécommunications vers et entre les chefs-lieux des provinces afin d'introvertir l'organisation des dessertes pour affirmer l'unité nationale et favoriser le développement des régions. Malheureusement, les réalisations accomplies n'ont pas été à la hauteur des attentes. Lorsque les réseaux de communication sont déficients et dégradés, ils ne jouent plus leur fonction de liaison et l'économie en souffre tout comme les régions, le cas de la Ngounié et la Nyanga. Il est temps de les sortir du sous-développement pour mieux les intégrer économiquement et socialement. La nouvelle politique de diversification de l'économie mise en place par le gouvernement gabonais pour préparer l'après-pétrole, ne peut aboutir sans un effort considérable porté à la construction des réseaux de communication efficaces répondant aux besoins du pays et capables de desservir la totalité des régions<br>Rich country, oil producer, Gabon records a very great deficit transport communications. With leaving Independence, the country adopted a land settlement policy which led to the development of the five-year plans of development. The objective was to disenclose the territory. The foregrounds and the policies led in the Sixties aimed at setting up road, airport national connections and telecommunications towards and between the chief towns of the provinces in order to introvertir the organization of the service roads to affirm the national unit and to support the development of the regions. Unfortunately, the accomplishments were not worthy of waitings. When the communication networks defective and are degraded, they do not play any more their function of connection and the economy just like suffers from it the areas, the case of Ngounié and Nyanga. It is time to leave them the underdevelopment for better integrating them economically and socially. The new policy of diversification of the economy installation by the Gabonese government to prepare after-oil, cannot lead without a considerable effort carried in the building of efficient networks of communication meeting needs of the country and able to serve the totality of the areas

L’objectif de notre étude sur les changements qui ont marqué l’évolution de la pêche artisanale au Gabon à partir du cadre de la province de l’Estuaire avait pour vocation d’une part, sur l’appui d’archives révélant l’organisation du secteur pêche durant la période coloniale et d’autre part sur la base d’enquêtes menées dans plusieurs villages, d’appréhender les changements encourus dans cette activité, qui est en cours de passage d’un cadre traditionnel et artisanal à un autre cadre plus hétéroclite.Ce nouveau cadre hétéroclite de la pêche artisanale se révèle aujourd’hui tout d’abord à travers la présence des communautés de pêcheurs issues d’origines ethniques diverses, dans lesquelles nous avons pu observer des interactions riches de partage de savoirs et de savoir-faire ; ensuite, à travers des interactions entre ces communautés de pêcheurs et l’environnement des territoires dans lesquels elles sont ancrées. We have updated a population growth of players in this industry.Beyond the analysis of the dynamics of changes, we wanted to show a changing relationship between fishermen and their socio-political environment, economic on the one hand, and answer the other hand the problem of the joint between the dynamics of social change in these companies enjoyed riethniques and dynamics of the coastal area they share

The application of computer vision in face processing remains an important research field. The aim of this chapter is to provide an up-to-date review of research efforts of computer vision scientist in facial image processing, especially in the areas of entertainment industry, surveillance, and other human computer interaction applications. To be more specific, this chapter reviews and demonstrates the techniques of visible facial analysis, regardless of specific application areas. First, the chapter makes a thorough survey and comparison of face detection techniques. It provides some demonstrations on the effect of computer vision algorithms and colour segmentation on face images. Then, it reviews the facial expression recognition from the psychological aspect (Facial Action Coding System, FACS) and from the computer animation aspect (MPEG-4 Standard). The chapter also discusses two popular existing facial feature detection techniques: Gabor feature based boosted classifiers and Active Appearance Models, and demonstrate the performance on our in-house dataset. Finally, the chapter concludes with the future challenges and future research direction of facial image processing.

In 1992 a GBS (Gravity Based Structure) was placed in the F3 block in the Dutch sector of the North Sea. Gabion mattresses around the GBS were applied to prevent scour. The potential scour and the required dimensions of the gabion mattresses were determined before the installation in small-scale physical model tests. After the installation of the GBS, annual surveys have been carried out to provide information about the scour development around the GBS and the status of the protection system. This paper presents field observations of local scour development around the F3 GBS platform and an evaluation of the performance of the scour protection system. The objectives were to assess the maximum scour around the GBS and to determine a cost-effective survey strategy. To assess the maximum scour around the GBS, metocean conditions for the F3 GBS location were hindcasted for the period between the platform installation and the latest survey. The observed scour depths were analysed and compared with predictions both from the model tests and from existing empirical formulas. The results showed that the predicted scour depths based on the model tests agree reasonably well with the field observations. The empirical formulas give larger scour depths than the surveys. Based on the field observations in combination with predictions of the models, the maximum scour depths under the design extreme environmental conditions have been determined. To determine a cost effective survey strategy, the behaviour and performance of the gabion mattresses were evaluated based on the annual surveys and video inspections. It was concluded that the protection system has functioned well and no damage was observed. On the basis of the maximum expected scour and the performance of the gabion mattresses, it was considered that the survey frequency may be reduced. Surveys and inspections may be carried out every three years instead of every year, and after a severe storm.

Abstract Current offshore hydrocarbon detection methods employ vessels to collect cores along transects over structures defined by seismic imaging which are then analyzed by standard geochemical methods. Due to the cost of core collection, the sample density over these structures is often insufficient to map hydrocarbon accumulation boundaries. Traditional offshore geochemical methods cannot define reservoir sweet spots (i.e. areas of enhanced porosity, pressure, or net pay thickness) or measure light oil or gas condensate in the C7 – C15 carbon range. Thus, conventional geochemical methods are limited in their ability to help optimize offshore field development production. The capability to attach ultrasensitive geochemical modules to Ocean Bottom Seismic (OBS) nodes provides a new capability to the industry which allows these modules to be deployed in very dense grid patterns that provide extensive coverage both on structure and off structure. Thus, both high resolution seismic data and high-resolution hydrocarbon data can be captured simultaneously. Field trials were performed in offshore Ghana. The trial was not intended to duplicate normal field operations, but rather provide a pilot study to assess the viability of passive hydrocarbon modules to function properly in real world conditions in deep waters at elevated pressures. Water depth for the pilot survey ranged from 1500 – 1700 meters. Positive thermogenic signatures were detected in the Gabon samples. A baseline (i.e. non-thermogenic) signature was also detected. The results indicated the positive signatures were thermogenic and could easily be differentiated from baseline or non-thermogenic signatures. The ability to deploy geochemical modules with OBS nodes for reoccurring surveys in repetitive locations provides the ability to map the movement of hydrocarbons over time as well as discern depletion affects (i.e. time lapse geochemistry). The combined technologies will also be able to: Identify compartmentalization, maximize production and profitability by mapping reservoir sweet spots (i.e. areas of higher porosity, pressure, & hydrocarbon richness), rank prospects, reduce risk by identifying poor prospectivity areas, accurately map hydrocarbon charge in pre-salt sequences, augment seismic data in highly thrusted and faulted areas.
