Full textThis papyrological study upon purchase and sale of slaves in roman egypt (30 b. C. - a. D. 395) comprises two parts: 1. Administrative and legal aspects; 2. Social and economic aspects. In the first part the author describes a certain number of formalities those who wish to buy or sell a slave have to fulfil. He then engages in a diplomatic, legal and terminological analysis of the sale contracts of slaves. In the second part the author tries to determine who are the actors of the slave sales and gathers together informations on the slaves who are sold. Papyrological documentation illustrates in concrete terms the traumatizing feature of most slave sales. Furthermore the author upholds: we would not dare to deny the existence of an import-export trade of slaves in egypt, but this trading activity does not clearly appear in the source. Throughout the book the author stresses on the danger that treatens the historical research: that hypothese put forward by some would be considered by others as established facts. The very thesis of the author is "do not consider likelihood as certainty"

Full textHigh temperature geothermal resources are mainly located along subduction zones. The Menderes geothermal Province (Turkey) offers the opportunity to study amagmatic geothermal systems, without necessarily invoking a magmatic heat source in the upper crust. This study shows that high temperatures in the back-arc domain are primarily related to subduction dynamics (i.e. rollback and tearing). Numerical models suggest that shear heating and mantle flows increase temporarily the amount of heat flow at the base of the crust. Furthermore, field studies on the entire Aegean region (Cyclades, Dodecanese and Western Anatolia) show a similar tectonic and thermal evolution since the Cretaceous, characterized by a succession of episodes of HP-LT and HT-LP metamorphism. Moreover, the contribution of TRSCM and radiochronometric data (⁴⁰Ar-³⁹Ar, U-Pb) reveals the formation of a largethermal pulse contemporaneous with the exhumation of the Menderes MCC. This event occurs in the Miocene and may be explained by a drastic change in subduction dynamics (i.e. slab tearing under the Menderes Massif).Crustal-scale structures (i.e. detachments) induce the emplacement of the Menderes MCC, and also control deep fluids circulation in the crust from brittle-ductile transition zone to the surface without magmatic contribution inthe upper crust. As a consequence, the Menderes geothermal Province is recognized as a most important active geothermal province in the world because it results from subduction dynamics. This dynamics thus controls thespatial and temporal distribution of thermal anomaly and extension, inducing crustal-scale permeable structures(detachments) that enhance fluids circulation

Tropical forests contain tree-stands with management and planning requires knowledge of their spatial organization and dynamics. Analyses of the spatial structure of tree species can be used in natural forests to identify the underlying mechanisms that structure of forest stands to improve the understanding of the relationships between species. This study was conducted in the Yoko Forest Reserve (YFR) around Kisangani in eastern DR Congo (DRC). It is to analyze the horizontal spatial structure of the most abundant species and to try to identify, on a local scale, factors and / or potentially explicative ecological processes to draw valuable lessons for the management of forest areas nearby Kisangani.
To do this, a sample plot of 25 ha (500m x 500m) was delineated in the southern block of the YFR consists of a mixed woody vegetation and semi-deciduous. A forest inventory was used to analyze the floristic and structural composition of the area. Three techniques (or statistical models) under spatial ecology for the analysis of the horizontal structure of the species were used: the nearest neighbor method of Clark & Evans (1954), the random sampling method Hines & Hines (1979), these two methods based on a single scale analysis of the study plot, and the method of Ripley (1977) allows not only a multi-scale analysis, but also the study of intra- and inter-relationships. Regarding this point, the trees were categorized into three stages of development on the basis of their diameters (young, immature and adult). A comparative and theoretical analysis of the three methods was performed.
A total of 169 species belonging to 36 families with 114 genera have been identified and the family Fabaceae which the majority of species belong to the subfamily Caesalpinioideae appeared decisive. Three species have proved the most abundant and the most representative of the stand, and for this reason the subject of all analyzes Gilbertiodendron dewevrei J. Léonard (De Wild) Scorodophloeus zenkeri Harms and Uapaca guineensis Mull. Arg. They all three showed an aggregated structure, and that all scales of analysis. Observed aggregates have a radius of about 25 m distance. The analysis based on the diameter indicated an aggregated structure for smaller diameters and regular for larger and that aggregation decreases with diameter. The results also show that the observed spatial structures depend on the considered analysis of scale and the method used. The method of Clark & Evans is sensitive to the variation in the extent. In this regard, the random sampling of Hines & Hines appeared more suitable than that of Clark & Evans. Ripley's functions and derivatives are effective tools and provide more information. Analyses showed positive associations between G. dewevrei and S. zenkeri, and between G. dewevrei and U. guineensis. By against, independence was found between S. zenkeri and U. guineensis. It also appears that young people are positively associated with the supposed breeding adults and immatures are independent compared to adults. The low or limited seed dispersal near parent trees is the main endogenous factor responsible. This factor also explains the positive associations between youth and adults of the same species. The competition between individuals to space requirements, light or nutrients in the soil, explains the observed regular structure and the independence of immature towards adults. Limited dispersal, however, is not the only factor explaining the spatial aggregation trees, other factors such as environmental heterogeneity (soil, topography, ) or disturbance are probably also involved. Anthropogenic or natural disturbance is an environmentally friendly process that should have played a decisive role in the spatial organization of forest communities. Combined with masting phenomenon, the effects of Janzen-Connell and Ectomycorrhizae, it is very probably the basis of spatial structures and spatial relationships observed between species of the YFR.

Full textIntersecting written sources allows a restitution of Parthian eastern borders comprising Margiana, Aria, Drangiana, Arachosia, one part of Bactria, and the Indus Valley. The rarity and the ambiguity of sources had caused us to neglect the indications pertaining to Bactria and to envision the independence of the other regions from the 1st century of our era. The recent revival of sources -- in particular numismatic and archeological ones -- concerning central Asia and north-west India, as well as the progress accomplished by the criticism of sources allow us today to reconsider this statement. Our investigation aims at exploring the hypothesis of a political integration of these regions to the Parthian Empire, partly occupied by populations known as Scythian, whose monetary practices are usually interpreted as a mark of political independence. The reconstitution of an adequate corpus, the critical re-evaluation of the written sources, as well as the reconsideration of the available material allow us to reinterpret the data and to integrate them in a more consistent way within an overall improved synthesis. This study involves so called Bactrian 'Saka-Parthians', Margian 'scythianized Parthians' and south-oriental 'Indo-sako-Parthians'; it seeks to demonstrate that the issue of ethnical origin is of little interest to understand the cultural and political practices of these groups, which, due to their geographical position on the frontier, were doomed to have an ethnically mixed population and to undergo powerful acculturation effects which were common to neighbouring countries and which where constantly renewed

Full textDivided between several fields of research ( art history, philology and epigraphy), the study of statuary monuments of the governors of the eastern provinces of the late roman period (between the end of the third and the sixth century anno domini) deserves an averal analysis of the avalable sources. Such a study is proposed by this research which lists in a catalogue arranged by location, the inscribed bases and statues which originated in such monuments. The corpus which has thus been built up is then the subject of an analysis. This takes into account the most updated research on portraiture, which no longer considered the portraits as an image resembling an individual but as the materialisation of the person which is socialy an individual. This study therefore tackles different fields in which the social personality of these byzantine governors has been expressed and which can be perceived on their sculpture portraits : politics, economics, culture and religion

Full textAt the western border of the Paraná Basin, alkaline rocks are found in great number in the Central Province, of central-eastern Paraguay between 25°39\' to 26°10\' S latitude and 56°21\' a 57°45\' W longitude. Tectonically, those occurrences are related to the Asunción rift, a megastructure which extends from that city to the Ybytyruzú hills over an area of up to 200 km in length by 35-40 km in width. The rift, trending NW-SSE, shows a very complex tectonic history, involving a dextral, dominantly tensional, double stress motion. It is also related to the opening of the South Atlantic. On the basis of the chronology of magmatic events, it is suggested that the rift evolved in a complex way in four main stages covering a large span of time (Mesozoic to Cenozoic), with magmatic activity reaching its maximum in the Early Cretaceous, 135-120 Ma ago. Textural features, mineralogical assemblages and field evidence allow the rocks to be grouped into two suites, one plutonic and the other volcanic. In the first group are included rocks commonly cropping out as stocks, intrusive into sandstone country rocks. Microscopically, several petrographic types can be distinguished: essexites, olivine syenogabbros, malignites, syenodiorites and nepheline syenites. These rocks are always holocrystalline and exhibit a phaeneritic granular texture ranging from hypidiomorphic to allotriomorphic. The volcanic suite occurs in general as lava flows, plugs (forming small hills) and dykes with centimetric to metric widths. This suite is made up of alkaline basalts, tephrites, trachyandesites, trachyphonolites, trachytes and phonolites, all tipically porphyritic, with mega-, pheno- and microphenocrystals of various minerals within an aphanitic groundmass. From a mineralogical viewpoint, the mafic rocks are richer in clinopyroxenes (augite to diopside-augite), magnesian olivine and calcic plagioclase (labradorite-bytownite). On the other hand, the more felsic rocks contain pyroxenes of different composition (aegerine-augite to aegerine), rare olivine, less calcic plagioclase (andesine-labradorite) and alkali feldspar. In the plutonic suite the alkali feldspar is orthoclase, whereas in the volcanic suite is represented by sanidine. Feldspathoids occur in both associations, nepheline being the most abundant phase in the plutonic rocks. Leucite and sodalite are only present in volcanic types (trachyphonolites, trachytes and, less commonly phonolites). Biotite and amphibole can be occasionally found while apatite, sphene, opaques and zircon are the most frequent accessory minerals. K/Ar and Rb/Sr data indicate that the rocks belonging to the Central Province were formed for the most part in the Early Cretaceous (130-120 Ma), in agreement with other alkaline occurrences associated with the eastern margin of the Paraná Basin (chronogroup of 133 Ma). On the other hand, apatite fission track ages point to younger values, which probably are related to major regional cooling episodes following the separation of Africa and South America. Initial rations of 87Sr/86Sr for the alkaline rocks cover a narrow interval, 0,70685-0,70790, and are slightly higher than mantellic values, possibly suggesting a more radiogenic source or even the possibility of crustal contamination.

Full textIn 1659, the peace treaty of the pyrenees devosts roussillon to beome part of france, but not making an much roussillon a province folly french. The transition was more or less slow according to the de dominious, alway gradual and oftea incomplete. It was not sufficient to remove the spanish domination from roussillon and its military hold : it was still necessary to organize this conquest and wia the hearte of the people, exasperated by years of war. Centuries of communal life and the identity of the language had beew wovea between roussillon and catalogne, closely knit tiea that a troety could not erase. The period following the treaty of the pyrenees lead to considerable uphevel in the province. In this troubled climate, the monarchy put into action a strategy to bring into lise the establishment on a human and cultural level. At the heart of this contriveance the diocese of Elne played xx a crucial role. This study goes contary to the dominant historiography on the subject projecting the analysis from the center towards the periphery, suggesting in general terms the process of adaption of the province, in order to appreciate what were the true political and religious stakes at the time. Moreover this consideration trys to give a dimension in comparing the local situation with other adjacent provinces of the kingdom, annexed during the 17th. Century. Certainly, it remains undeniable that the total integration of roussillon inte france truely happened only with the 3td. Republic. However, one would not dare to question the willingness of the monarchy's government under louis x1v. For this transition, and one can agree to recognize the power and efficiency of the governmental machine of the french monarch between 1659 and 1715

Full textIn theNovo Orienteregion, located approximately 400 km from Fortaleza-CE, metamaficand metaultramafic rocks occur in different contexts in the southwestern portion of the Cearà Central Domain ofBorborema Province. The metamafic rocks occurintercaleted with metapelitic and metapsamitic rocks in the form of lenses and tabular layers, with varied thickness, from centimeter to a few tens of meters, consistent with the N-S foliation and metamorphosed under greenschistand amphibolitefacies conditions. The geochemical data indicate a tholeiitic basaltic composition with signature of type MORB basalts, seafloor basalts, calc-alkaline and intra-plate basalts. The main occurrence of ultramafic rocks is associated with a thrust sheetpreserved on a topographic high known as Pereiras Hill. In that location, metaultramafic rocks intensely tectonized, serpentinized, steatizated and silicified, comprising serpentinites (sheared or isotropic), chloritites, actinolitites, tremolitites, talc-chlorite schists,serpentine-talc schists, talc-rich siliceous rocks and listwÃnitesoutcrop in situ. Petrographic studies of thin/polished sections underconventional optical microscope and also scanning electron microscope - SEM, confirmed the presenceof several minerals of economic interest, such as Cr-magnetite, ferrichromite and Cr-spinel associatedwith the rocks of the metaultramaficsequence. Geochemical data indicate that the serpentinites cancorrespond to rocks resulting from the alteration of Alpine-type ultramafites (peridotites and dunites)depleted in REE, similar to the pattern presented by subduction-zone serpentinitos generated fromexhumed sub-continental peridotites and hydrated during ocean-continental transition (OCT) rifting. Sm-Nd isotopic analyzes of the two group of rocks show a juvenile paleoproterozoic derivation for most samples with TDMNd age ranging from 2.10 to 2.46 Ga,ɛNd,2.1 between 0.40 and +3 30, and mixing with older sources represented by archeanTDM ages ranging from 2.63 to 3.29 Ga and ɛNd,2.1 slightly negative (-0.15 to -0.22). The data suggest that the metamafic and metaultramafic rocks could represent, respectively, the mafic magmatism during the development of a magma-poor passive margin and part of a sub-continental lithospheric mantle exhumed in an ocean-continent transition (OCT.

Full textIn this study we consider the cults of Magna Mater, Mithra, Jupiter Dolichenus, Jupiter Sabazios and Isis and Serapis, commonly called "Oriental cults", as a part of the presence of the Roman religion and culture propagated with the romanisation of the province. Based on the analysis of the archaeological monuments, we have studied the presence of these cults in reference with certain provincial characteristics (the rock mithraea, the cognationes, the priests of Jupiter Dolichenus) and with the possible influences of the religious policy of Rome (the popularity of Magna Mater at the time of August, the religious reforms in the cult of Magna Mater under Antonius Pius in the second century, the development of the iconographic models of Mithra). In conclusion, we noted that these cults, integrated in the Roman society and religion, do not appear like an alternative to the Roman religion, but shall be considered as a part of the conscience and religious life of the inhabitants of the roman province of Dalmatia, in particular in its urban centres

Full textThe Intendent represents the King in a province. Starting in 1716, Roussillon takes the official denomination of Intendance. As a conquered region it didn’t have either assemblies or states. The intendent governed by himself. This title of Minister of justice, police and finances made him an omnipotent ruler. Ha was used to being above law and was able to enter courts of justice, judge crimes and offenses, preside sovereign courts as it happened four times in Roussillon. This prerogatives -as concerns police- obliged him to maintain order. He has to cope with economical problems and principally with the trade of cereals, taking notice oh the King’s interests and the population’s needs. Moreover he is in charge and even has a monopoly of the local finances. With the help of his provosts he shares and collect taxes, solves the problems of labor -as well as he can-. Starting in the XVIIIe century, he becomes more and more involved in the well being of the people he is in chare of. His job consists as well as having a personal contact with the royal power and his need to make the everyday life of the population better

Full textThis dissertaiton purposes to demonstrate that the rural architecture of today in east-central and southeastern europe (poland, slovakia, hungary, rumania, and yugoslavia), far from reflecting any king of national spirit, manifests two culturally opposed conceptions of the dwelling: that of the west, and that of the east. These two types correspond geographically to the former territories of the austrian and the turkish empires. The principles of the enlightenment penetrate the rural architecture of the region by means of the austrian colonisation of the banat and galicia, lands acquired in the turkish wars of the eighteenth century. Although german scholars explain this phenomenon by a "german influence", a study of the colonisation archives clearly reveals

Full textThe aim of the present work is to study a component of the Roman African society: the one constituted by the aliens originating from the Eastern part of the Roman Empire. The study is framed within the Early Roman Empire, as most of the documentation available dates back to that period. Epigraphy is the primary documentation for this work. Before turning to the study of this subject, it was essential to identify selection keys that helped fix the origin of these non-natives and come up with the body of 260 epigraphic records that constitute the corpus of this work. The main tool taken into consideration is onomastic, notwithstanding the vagueness sometimes inherent in this index. Thereafter, light was shed on the many aspects of the presence of these Orientals. First, the demographic layer: figuring, motives, conditions and structures of departure and the distribution on the African soil. The second layer concerns the social aspect. It aims to explore the various features of the presence of the Oriental community in Roman Africa. First, the nature of the activities they exercised. If the job of arms was their main vocation, they still exercised several other activities. The study of their religious life showed that they remained largely faithful to the worship practices of their home countries. Onomastic and also marriage practices were clues that were used to study the nature of the contacts they had with Africans and evaluate their integration within the host society. The last part of the work was devoted to the study of the cultural phenomenon of Hellenism and the role that these Orientals played in promoting this kind of culture in a predominantly Latin province

After thorough consideration of geographical and geomorphological characteristics and peculiarities in the distribution of the Thracian tribes, an attempt to refine our idea of the Thracians in the ethnic and ethno-genetic perspective was made. Thanks to the available sources, we tried to interpret the semantic evolution of the terms « Thrace » and « Thracians », since their appearance on the Linear B tablets, or those written in Hittite dialects, passing through Egyptian sources as far as they was codified in ancient Greek and then adopted in the Latin language. The review of the chronology of the thracian history and political organizations, led us to study the links – more warrior than peaceful, between Thracians and Romans, during the establishment of the Roman provinces in the Balkans. The annexation of the last Sapaean kingdom and the creation of the province of Thrace, served as a pretext to discuss the various resources mobilized for the management of the territory, which does not retain the same status in all the period. Pointing the different players and their functions is the result of a will to show not only the strong tension consequent to the creation of the province, but also the participation of Thracian-Roman elites in the exercise of power. Relationships ongoing from the initial contacts to the provincialization of Thrace, led to the creation of an image of Thracians in Rome, which is not only a result of the Greek cultural heritage or the bloody battles, but also a strong critical view of Romans on their own lifestyle

Title: The Incipient Province. Incorporation of the Ecuadorian Oriente to the national State (1830-1895)
This work analyses the general features of the incorporation process of the Ecuadorian Amazonia to the national State during the 19th century, that is, the process of nationalisation of a region, the so-called Oriente. It mainly focuses on the orientalist policies implemented by the Ecuadorian State, which can be classified under four big categories: administration, promotion of catholic missions, colonisation and building of communication routes. Along with state policies, a series of related questions that conditioned them are examined, such as: the existence and influence of several local authorities festered within the Oriente; the regional expectations on the expansion to this area present in the provinces of the Sierra; the indigenous resistance, under diverse intensities as well as manifestations; the development of catholic missions in the area; and the increasing importance of border conflicts during the 19th century. The research undertaken shows the persisted and increasing character of the process, despite its inequality in terms of the scope of this territory's effective incorporation, both from a socio-economical and politico-administrative perspective and from an ideological-symbolical one. To summarise, concerning the main issues of the thesis, we observe that Ecuadorian governments of this period did have among their goals the incorporation of the Oriente to the national State and that they used catholic missions as a key strategic element to achieve it. The analysis illustrates the deep contradictions between the presence of the forest in official discourses and the precariousness of the effective institutional action on the territory. Furthermore, it considers the interest of several groups of regional power in the Sierra that promoted initiatives aiming at the colonisation and the construction of communication routes with the Oriente, resulting into the rise of several inter and intra rivalries. Equally, during the 19th century, the Oriente gradually became an element of national unity as well as a common ideological reference shared by different social sectors. Finally, these years also witnessed the making of an imagery of the Oriente that advocated the conversion of this region into the solution for all problems the country was facing. Such imagery was shaped by the discourse of ruling groups and the development of conflicts in international borders.

Full textThe last twenty years or so have seen a dramatic increase in the interest on Roman Crete, while long-standing archaeological excavations in Cyrenaica (when they were still possible) brought to light lots of information on the Roman period. However, the administrative setting which the two areas lived in during the High Empire remains almost completely unknown because of the historians’ disinterest in this double province of the Roman Empire. Created by Pompey and still a reality during the Tetrarchy, the province of Crete and Cyrene is often thought as a marginal and unsuccessful administrative entity, far away from Rome. The thesis aims at re-evaluating the historical role of the province in the Roman Empire and at analyzing the way local societies reacted to the Roman domination. The first part focuses on the administrative history of the province. The chronology of its creation is studied along with the reasons why Rome chose the administrative solution of the union. The fasti of the Roman magistrates in charge of the province are established and the internal organization of the province is analyzed. In the second and third parts, the life and evolution of local societies under Roman domination are discussed through a prosopographical analysis. Portraying the senators originating from Crete and Cyrenaica as well as the archontes of the Hadrianic panhellenic league and the high priests of the imperial cult gives valuable information on how local elites reached the superior strata of Roman society. But most of the aristocrats were only active locally and never got beyond their own city-states. Several stemmata of local families help to understand how the Roman Empire change the way of representing themselves and alter their strategies of social domination

Full textThe studied area is located at the eastern tip of the Zagros system, close to the Makran accretionary prism Oman Mountains and Persian Gulf. This orogenic system results from the ongoing collision between the Arabian and Central-Iran plates. The main characteristic of the eastern Zagros fold thrust belt (Fars and Bandar-Abbas provinces) is the wide distribution of Hormuz salt diapirs. The present-day surface morphology of salt diapirs can be categorized into six types, which we suggest represent different stages in a long and complex history. We show that almost all the diapirs were already active prior to Zagros folding either as emergent diapirs forming islands or as buried domes initiated at as early as the Lower Paleozoic. They have been reactivated by subsequent sedimentary supply, tectonic events and surface erosion. In fact, each salt diapir shows individual evolution depending of their position in the system. During Zagros orogeny, the Hormuz salt layer acted as basal decollement level decoupling the basement (including pre-Hormuz sediments) from 10 to 15 km thick sedimentary cover. Salt cored detachment folds with variable trends developed during the Late Cenozoic in a domain, which was already punctuated by salt domes or diapirs. To understand such a particular layout, we constructed four geological cross-sections from the poorly deformed Persian Gulf to the inner part of Zagros Fold-Thrust Belt, using an important subsurface and surface data set. The Amount of shortening in the folded part of the sections remains low, less than 10%. Pre-existing salt structures (diapirs and dawn-building) strongly influenced both on the localization of folds and the direction of fold axes as also evidenced by original analogue experiments

Full textThe study deals with the transformations of the Romano-Byzantine army, for the period which covers the 3rd till the 5th c. In the western part of the Roman Empire and until the 6th c. For its oriental part. These are examined through the prism of the pitched battle, itself analyzed through the various scales of its progress, from its circumstances up to its outcomes, and also ,through the hierarchy and the dispositions of the troops, their evolutions and their way of fighting. From the 3rd c. On, the pressure exercised by the foreign peoples upset the strategic choices of the Empire, whereas the transformations of the armament and of the internal organization of the units seem strictly connected to the tactical renewals then noticed. Confronted with strengthened but diffuse military threats, the Roman army improves its techniques of acquisition of information, and doesn't hesitate any more to resort to indirect strategies. The adaptation to the new tactical conditions passes by a narrower coordination between the various weapons on the battlefield, and, within these, between the various specialities. It also implies a renewal of the arrangement in lines of the infantry, modelled on the Hellenistic phalanx, and requiring the increase in number of the tactical ranks. It leads finally to a revaluation of the place heId by the cavalry and the bowmen on the battlefield. In fine, the preservation of a strong capacity to manoeuvre shows the qualities of the commanders, and shows also the difficulty to find a military explanation for the fall of the Western Roman Empire

Full textThis study focuses on the imperial cult in the Near East and its expressions, by analysing the place of the emperor and of the imperial power's image through time and space, from Augustus to Constantine. The epigraphic, literary, numismatic and archaeological sources (sculptures, monumental architecture, town planning) are analysed, from Phoenicia to Osrhoene, from Commagene to Arabia. The first part deals with the urban and rural spaces, and with the sanctuaries where representations of the imperial power took place. It emphasizes the ubiquity of the “surveyor emperor”. The second part treats of the symbolic functions of the sculptures and of the religious figures linked to a theoretically eternal power, without disregarding the question of imperial epithets. The third part analyses the celebrations, the organization and the promotion of the imperial cult : Greek games, gladiators contests, as well as civic, provincial and supra-provincial structures are tackled, then it ends with the major role of the regional dependent kings, of the city notables, and of the Roman governors

Full textThe documentation that was used for the research is comprised of epigraphic material from the bordering areas of Macedonia and Upper Moesia. The material is presented in the form of a prosopographic catalogue, while an analysis of the ancient sources allows us to determine the limits of the territories of the various peoples that inhabited these areas. By simultaneously using the information furnished by the sources and that acquired by the onomastic analysis, we can understand the ethnological composition of these border areas and its changes throughout the centuries. The inscriptions under discussion indicate the existence of specific institutions within the existent roman administration system. The form of this system is due to the specificities of these regions. They are, on the one hand, the heritage of institutions of the pre-roman period, formed by the rural character of Macedonia, and on the other, by the mining riches, which gave shape to the administration of certain regions of Upper Moesia

Full textThis work characterizes the tectonic and magmatic evolution of the Precambrian shield of Bolivia. The complex geological evolution of the eastern Bolivia extends from the Paleo- to Mesoproterozoic, and can be related with the magmatic and metamorphic events that are ascribed to the Rio Negro - Juruena (1.78-1.60 Ga), Rondonian - San Ignacio (1.56-1.30 Ga) and Sunsás Aguapei (1.25-1.00 Ga) provinces, known in Bolivia as the Paragua block. Several methods of study were adopted in the research with the scope that this is a land with polycyclic evolution. As such our study included, besides the geological mapping and petrography of major rock types, the U-Pb age determinations of granitoid rocks, Sm-Nd and Rb-Sr isotopic analyses, as well as geochemical data. At the interpretation there was the critical evaluation of recent papers, the integration of field data, aeromagnetic and aero-radiometric, including the field experience of the author. The data obtained in the last decade have substantially changed the geology of the Bolivian Precambrian shield. It has been characterized three temporally distinct granite suites preceding the San Ignacio orogeny (1.37-1.30 Ga): the Correreca granite in the southern part of the area has 207Pb/206Pb age from 1.92 to 1.89 Ga, with TDM model ages of 2.8 to 2.9 Ga and values of Nd(t) of -8.5 and -9.4; the Yarituses suite (La Cruz, Refugio and San Pablo granites) shows calc-alkaline signature. Data U-Pb SHRIMP, TIMS and ICPMS laser ablation indicate the formation of this suite between 1673 to 1621 Ma. The U-Pb SHRIMP crystallization age of La Cruz granite is 1673 ± 21 Ma, TDM model age of 1.83 Ga and Nd(t) of +2.1 indicative of a predominantly mantle source. The Refugio granite has U-Pb TIMS age of 1673 ± 25 Ma and the San Pablo pluton yields a ICPMS Laser ablation age of 1621 ± 80 Ma (TDM age of 1.7 Ga and Nd(t) +3.5). These data suggest again a mantle source for the Yarituses suite. The San Ramon granodiorite event has a crystallization age of 1429 ± 4 Ma (SHRIMP), TDM of 1.7 Ga, and Hf(t) between +3.49 and +5.47 and represents a juvenile accreted episode. The magmatism, deformation and metamorphism of San Ignacio orogeny is the main event of the study area, represented by the Pensamiento Granitoid Complex with sin to late-kinematic and late to post-kinematic plutons. The San Martín, La Junta and Diamantina granites have crystallization ages of 1373 - 1340 Ma, TDM model ages from 1.6 to 2.0 Ga, with values of Nd(t) from 2.0 up to -4.0. The Las Maras, Talcoso, Limonal and San Andrés granites yielded crystallization ages of 1347-1275 Ma. The TDM ages of Limonal and San Andrés granites are between 1.9 and 1.8 Ga and the Nd(t) values of -1.4 and +1.6 respectively. The whole rock geochemistry of these granites indicates a composition consistent with the magmatic arc. Thus the San Ignacio orogeny represents a continental accretionary arc that built the final architecture of the Rondonian-San Ignacio province (1.56-1.30 Ga) by the collision between the Paragua block and the Rio Negro -Juruena province (1.78-1.60 Ga). The Mesoproterozoic evolution of the SW margin of the Amazonian craton ends with the formation of the Sunsás collisional belt that produced sin to-late and late topost- kinematic plutonism. The allochthonous and collisional nature of the Sunsás orogeny is marked by tectonic fronts, with well-defined sinistral sense, converging towards the Paragua block.

Full textThe modernization of the state and the emergence of new sociocultural actors from the 1980s onwards originated the current process of participative decentralization in Bolivia. The reformed constitution confers a multiethnic and multicultural character on the Bolivian nation. Nearly two hundred laws have been passed, aiming at a thorough reorganisation of the country. Two of them will particulary support the development of new strategies on the part of the indigenous groups or the groups in the process of indigenisation. The Popular Participation Law (1994) has generated a wide movement of municipalization based on the principles of participative planning and has thus opened civic and political spaces to all local actors. The Law of the National Institute of Land reform (1996) explicitly acknowledges cultural diversity by granting the native populations the ownership of collective land. Based on three case studies carried out in Chiquitania, an area located in the Lowlands of Bolivia, this research work evaluates the strategic capacity of the local indigenous organizations within the framework of participative decentralization, and tries to measure the extent of the reforms of neo-indigenist type. It highlights the progressive democratization of the local societies, the indigenous territorialisation as well as the ethnicisation of the actors and the social relationships

Full textThe lower Colorado River is considered the geographical boundary between [the Argentinean regions of Pampa and Patagonia]. In this area converges various provinces and regions, as well as phytogeographical and zoogeographical sub-domains that give to the environment ecotonal characteristics. The project Archaeological Investigations in the Lower Colorado River, which is part of this work, has as its central objective the study of the material culture, adaptation and evolution of hunter-gatherer peoples who occupied the area during the Holocene-3000-250 years BP. The population’s dynamics of the Pampas and Patagonia regions in the final late Holocene (ca. 1000-250 years BP) was described by several researchers as a complex map of inter-ethnic contacts and networks between groups at local, extra-regional and transandean range scale. The aim of this thesis is to define the technological patterns of hunter-gatherer groups who inhabited the studied area during the late Holocene. In order to do so, the nature and presentation of raw materials exploited is stated, and the different methods of debitage and economic analysis of the lithic assemblages are identified, within the theoretical and methodological approach of chaîne opératoires. The results of this thesis allow concluding that during the late Holocene the basis of technological knowledge is kept constant. The technological changes experienced in behavior toward the final late Holocene (ca. 1000-250 years BP) are due to the choice among methods, materials, and types of instruments known and available, of those with proven efficacy, whose production was intensified in the last 1000 years B.P. The behavioral changes linked to lithic technological system are accompanied by -or produced as a result of- reorganization of the social system as a whole. In general terms, this situation is also observed in hunters gathered societies in neighboring areas and regions (Pampean and Northen Patagonic regions) towards final late Holocene

Full textThis work provides a canonical and historical approach to the organization of the Church in the 4th century, having as main purpose the reconstruction of the face of the Church according to some key aspects, as well as the understanding of how the canons of this period have shaped its face. This return to a stable organization of the Church reveals inventiveness, which the Church has shown, in many circumstances, to meet the challenges of this era. The councils of the 4th century, as well as the canon law concerning the election and the ordination of the bishop, are considered in the direction of significant detail. The study pays particular attention to the Apostolic Canon 34, which is today the most commented and cited canon in the Orthodox community, not only to legitimize the organization of autonomous and autocephalous Orthodox Churches, but also to justify the jurisdictional rights of autocephalous churches in their diaspora

The present work consists on asystematization of all the figlinae amphorales of the eastern coast of the Provincia Hispania Citerior (2nd BC - 3rd AD) from an interdisciplinary point of view, analyzing the three most important aspects: description and analysis of the producing structures, the catalogue of epigraphic stamps and dispersal patterns in the western Mediterranean and, finally, the typological characterization of its amphora productions. It is, therefore, the first work of this magnitude in studies related to tarraconensis amphorae. Also, and thanks to the application of new methodologies based on photogrammetric survey techniques, as well as computation and three-dimensional modeling, we have been able to create a morphological database of the main tarraconensian amphora productions. This has allowed us to create, for the first time in the history of the research, an extensive and detailed typological table of the most common containers (Dressel 2, Dressel 3 and Pascual 1), which collects the various pottery traditions present in the different producing areas that make up the eastern coast of the Provincia Hispania Citerior in Roman times.

Full textThis study focuses on the one hand on the development of the technical processes of defense during the transitory period of the first half of the 17th century before the poliorcetics influenced by Italy was substituted by Vauban’s theories, and is based on the fortresses located in the Guipuzcoa and the Roussillon areas. On the other hand, the study concentrates on the analysis of the historical discourse as it was given by the French and Spanish monarchies through documents on record, and of the censured discourse of documentary literature, propaganda of the ruling power and the true reflection of mentalities. As a matter of fact, the conflicts of the Lérins islands started with Louis XIII's declaration of war to Philip IV in 1635, and the blockade of Perpignan in 1642 put an end to the loss of the Roussillon. These wars lie within the scope of both France’s policy of hegemonic conquest and Spain’s attempt to assert its centralizing power with the beginning of the Catalonian rebellion

Objective: To describe the relationship between the economic and sociodemographic factors that may enable adolescent pregnancy in female students who attend the oriented cycle of secondary education in schools belonging to the city of Santa Lucía, province of Corrientes, Argentina; during the months of September and December of 2017. Materials and Methods: A non-experimental, descriptive, quantitative, retrospective, cross-sectional study was conducted in order to determine the economic and sociodemographic factors related to possible adolescent pregnancy in female students enrolled in the oriented cycle of secondary school education. the schools belonging to the city of Santa Lucía, province of Corrientes, Argentine Republic, between the months of September and December of 2017. The collection of information (previous authorization of the school authorities) was obtained through a survey, production of the author, taking into account for its preparation the form: World Health Survey (WHO). (See ANNEXES 1). Results: It can be noticed that adolescent pregnancies are occurring between 15 and 17 years of age in our society, most of them without previous planning and in total ignorance of what implies the upbringing of a child. The results obtained allow us to determine that the students who are already mothers, the majority, recognize that their pregnancies were "For a carelessness" (58% - 7 of 12 moms). In addition, it is worth noting that the economic factor often affects adolescent pregnancy as taking into account that when faced with the different questions regarding this study variable, between 30 and 40% of respondents acknowledge that they have had sexual intercourse once, without barriers. of protection, for lack of money. Conclusion: We must assume the responsibility to work deeply and consciously in relation to Sexual and Reproductive Education. Only in this way and denaturing, we can advance in the reduction of unintentional or unwanted adolescent pregnancy.

Full textThis dissertation deals with the sandjak of Alexandretta from the 1860s until the end of World War II. In the Ottoman Empire, the sandjak was attached to the vilayet of Adana or that of Aleppo. A region which used to be the strategic Mediterranean outlet for northern Syria and Iraq, and inhabited by a great variety of communities, the sandjak was ceded by France to Turkey in 1939. We aim at studying this region on the regional and international levels through the history of European communities (especially merchants and consulars) and their role in defending European interests and protecting populations on the long duration. We strive to understand the transformations affecting this territory following the political upheavals ̶ the transition from the imperial framework to the Syrian nation-state under French mandate, then the attachment to the Republic, as well as the two World Wars ̶ and economic – the late 19th century Great Depression and the crisis tof the 1930s. At the local level, we assess the impact of territorial and political restructuring on populations and activities: the configuration of exchange networks, consular and family networks, the creation of national identities, the reconstruction of relationships between the various communities inhabiting the region. By using French, British, Ottoman and Italian diplomatic archives in addition to the archives of religious communities and the commercial and private archives of Levantine families of Alexandretta, we study this territory in on a longer term than the history of diplomatic litigation which opposed France and Turkey between 1936 and 1939 before the League of Nations, taking into account local political, economic, social and religious life

Full textEnglish summury : This study is about the political and administrative organization of Judaea, understanding the word in its broadest meaning, from the death of Herod the Great to the establishment of the province of Syria Palaestina. The first part deals with the place given by Rome to the Herodian dynasts, from Archelaus to Agrippa II. The second part treats the titles and the powers imparted to equestrians, prefects or, later, procurators, who were given the government of Judaea from 6 to 66 A. D. , notwithstanding Agrippa I's short-lived reign. Due attention is paid to the difficult translation of the Roman institutional words from Latin to Greek, specially in Josephus and Philo, and also towards the modern target languages. During that time, one can see the Herodian princes and kings, prefects and procurators alike, governing under the higher authority of the Roman consular legate of Syria, the man holding the imperium pro praetore in the region. Titus'command in 70 is scrutinized. The third part is about the administrative evolution – military aspects included – of the praetorian province, afterwards of the consular province of Judaea, from 70 to 136, i. E. From the destruction of the Second Temple to the defeat of Bar Kokhba. The study of this period has been improved by the new light coming from epigraphical and papyrological data disclosed in the last past years. On some issues, by the way, this doctoral thesis deals also with the history of the Christian beginnings

Full textThis research is related to late medieval age religious, fortified and civil architecture preserved in Val Cavallina and on the western side of Iseo Lake, in the eastern province of Bergamo: this territory is privileged for the collection of data useful for the definition of the chrono-typological seriation of architectural elements and walls, dating from the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. Chrono-typological tablets exceed technical aspects, and reconstruct the social and political appearance of this territory in the late medieval age: the construction of castles and towers conditioned the new settlement of villages, setting new aggregation points. These new buildings are a reflection of aristocracy’s families, who builds as statement of economic and social power strength. The insight of the buildings made with the archeological method allowed the definition of building techniques, and the settlement dynamics in the eastern province of Bergamo. The historic building is crucial to understand the ways to live: the analysis of medieval buildings has allowed distinguishing specific typology of houses and the occupational way to set the territory in the late medieval age; every area has his architectural peculiarities.

Full textNo-take marine protected areas (MPAs) have been established as a management strategy to conserve biodiversity and sustain fisheries. When properly managed, such areas can maintain or increase reef productivity and also benefit surrounding areas, providing catch for fishermen. In the Philippines, most MPAs are usually small (<1 km2) and locally managed, and most present poor levels of enforcement. Five locally managed MPAs located in Negros Oriental were studied in order to test the effectiveness of such MPAs. The objectives were to compare fish biomass, richness, abundance, diversity and evenness values between MPAs and adjacent fished sites and see how they varied between the different enforcement levels, sizes, and ages of these MPAs. Underwater visual census was carried out to record and measure fish from 76 indicator species inside and outside MPAs from September 2016 to February 2017. Data analysis showed that fish population parameter values were only higher inside certain MPAs when compared to fished areas. Two MPAs were found to be the most effective in the region, exhibiting greater species biomass, richness, density, diversity and evenness than non-MPAs. On the other hand, three MPAs were found to be ineffective, exhibiting similar fish population parameters than non-MPA sites. From the studied parameters, only enforcement level played a significant role in the effectiveness of these MPAs. Small and locally managed MPAs can benefit fish populations, but only when properly managed and enforced. Certain areas need further investments from the municipalities to be able to be effective and properly conserve fish populations.
