Abstract:
Sceptronema orientale was found epizoic on the harpacticoid copepod Euterpina acutifrons (Dana) collected from several locations along Bahía Anegada, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. Material was examined with light and scanning electron microscopy and new data about the morphology of the chloroplast and ultrastructural details of the girdle, valves, apical slit fields and rimoportulae pattern were obtained. Based on this new knowledge the descriptions of the species and of the monotypic genus Sceptronema are emended. Considering that in the protologue three pictures were designated as iconotype, the material from Ría del Jabalí is chosen as an epitype to serve as the interpretative type of Sceptronema orientale. A comparison with the morphologically similar genera Licmophora and Gato was conducted and the inclusion of Sceptronema in the Family Licmophoraceae, Order Licmophorales is proposed.

Abstract:
AbstractUnderstanding the importance of bushmeat consumption for household nutrition, both in rural and urban settings, is critical to developing politically acceptable ways to reduce unsustainable exploitation. This study provides insights into bushmeat consumption patterns relative to the consumption of other meat (from the wild, such as fish and caterpillars, or from domestic sources, such as beef, chicken, pork, goat and mutton) among children from Province Orientale, Democratic Republic of Congo. Our results show that urban and rural households consume more meat from the wild than from domestic sources. Of the various types of wild meat, bushmeat and fish are the most frequently consumed by children from Kisangani and fish is the most frequently consumed in villages. Poorer urban households eat meat less frequently but consume bushmeat more frequently than wealthier households. In urban areas poorer households consume common bushmeat species more frequently and wealthier households eat meat from larger, threatened species more frequently. Urban children eat more bushmeat from larger species (duiker Cephalophus spp. and red river hog Potamochoerus porcus) than rural children (rodents, small monkeys), probably because rural households tend to consume the less marketable species or the smaller animals. We show that despite the tendency towards more urbanized population profiles and increased livelihood opportunities away from forest and farms, wildlife harvest remains a critical component of nutritional security and diversity in both rural and urban areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Abstract:
Xanthium orientale subsp. italicum (Moretti) Greuter is an annual herbaceous plant in the Asteraceae family, native to North America. It was first found in Beijing, China, in 1991. Since then, it has spread into many provinces such as Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning, Hebei, Shandong, Xinjiang, and so on. Furthermore, it has been listed as one of the dangerous quarantine weeds in China (4). This noxious invasive weed has a strong ability to acclimatize to new environments. X. orientale subsp. italicum can usually be found in alluvial flatlands, riverbanks, wastelands, roadsides, pastures, as well as farmlands. The presence of this plant decreases the native biodiversity and influences the production of agriculture and stockbreeding. In August 2013, a rust disease was first observed on X. orientale subsp. italicum in Dalian, Liaoning Province, northeast China. Various sized lesions were found on approximately one third of the leaves of each infected plant. These lesions were yellow in the early stage of infection; gradually the center of each lesion turned brown, and eventually the infected lesions became necrotic and ruptured. The small (on average 4 mm in diameter) and dark brown raised telia appeared in the center of the lesions on the lower leaf surface. The teliospores were brown, clavate, two-celled, and measured 42 to 58 × 12 to 21 μm. Teliospores had a conical top, constricted septa, and a persistent pedicel (22 to 70 μm in length). The walls of the teliospores were smooth, 0.8 to 1.2 μm thick at the side and 4 to 8 μm thick at the apex. The size, color, and morphology of the teliospores fit the description of Puccinia xanthii (1,3). A pathogenicity test was conducted by the method of detached leaf inoculation (2). We collected 48 healthy leaves from six individuals of X. orientale subsp. italicum plants, eight from each individual. Teliospores from disease samples were suspended to 1 × 105 spores per ml with sterile water and then smeared on 24 leaves (four per individual); the remaining leaves were inoculated with sterile water as control. Each of the leaves was put on a moist filter paper in a petri dish, and was cultured in a chamber with a 12-h photoperiod at 25°C. Seven days later, dark brown raised telia were observed on all inoculated leaves but not on control ones. The teliospores were removed from the sorus on inoculated leaves, and according to the morphology confirmed to be those of P. xanthii. The rust caused by P. xanthii has been documented in different hosts in many other countries such as Spain, France, Italy, former Yugoslavia, Australia, the United States, and South Africa. In addition, the rust fungus was found to infect X. orientale subsp. italicum in eastern Hungary (1). To our knowledge, this is the first report of P. xanthii attacking the invasive plant X. orientale subsp. italicum in China. It is important to study the potential of using this rust fungus as a biological control agent of X. orientale subsp. italicum.

Abstract:
This article approaches the subversive dimension and performative gender in women awakeness in Oriental Province post-Mobutu era. Their ambition wobbles between maintaining feminine leadership status (their high-flying female) which takes its subsistence from the implementation of their capability and their sufferance from social representation in an environment dominated by patriarchal stereotypes and a political system less disposed to take actions in gender matters. However, feminine elite’s capability procreates social transformations across a social deconstruction not only in role of sexes in the society (structural transformations) but also in transformations observed in man to woman and woman to woman relationship. Under this optics, these civil society women really become actors of change in women well-being in their area. Their way of thinking, acting and being make them convinced feminists. But, the opposite is also possible when some of them resign themselves to break the wall of glass sheltering inequalities between sexes for other aims, notably political. They are selective in their involvement. In that case, they are common feminists of use, most often, as footbridge for politicians. It is on base of the analysis model socio dynamic model analysis which we had achieved in better reconciling structural complexity of those social representations and their insertion in plural social and ideological contexts in Oriental province after President Mobutu reign.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:

A novel Gram-stain-negative, facultatively anaerobic, catalase- and oxidase-positive, non-motile and pink-pigmented bacterium, designated G22T, was isolated from Gahai, a saltwater lake in Qinghai province, China. Optimal growth occurred at 33–35 °C, pH 7.0–7.5, and in the presence of 2–4 % (w/v) NaCl. The DNA G+C content was 40.0 mol%. The major polar lipids were phosphatidylethanolamine and three unknown lipids. The predominant cellular fatty acids were iso-C15 : 0, anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C17 : 0 3-OH and iso-C15 : 0 3-OH, and MK-7 was the main respiratory quinone. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain G22T fell within the class Bacteroidia . Its closest phylogenetic neighbour was the recently described species Draconibacterium orientale , the sole member of the family Draconibacteriaceae , with merely 90.04 % sequence similarity. On the basis of phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic evidence observed, a novel species in a new genus, Tangfeifania diversioriginum gen. nov., sp. nov., is proposed within the family Draconibacteriaceae . The type strain is G22T ( = CICC 10587T = DSM 27063T).

“Around Kamanyola in Walungu territory, FARDC soldiers looted property and ca􀄴 le and gang-raped a lady. When trying to fight off the rapists, two male members of the aff ected family were killed.” This is a short note from the daily situation report of MONUSCO’s South Kivu office, sent on 10 July 2010. It is one of many similar observations made by the dismayed and overwhelmed peacekeepers of the United Nations Stabilization Mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), whose first priority is the protection of civilians. On another day, or in another duty station, peacekeepers might report about a couple of children being abducted or a family burnt alive in their home by one of the militias roaming the subregion. On a few occasions – in July/August 2010 in Walikale territory in North Kivu, and in January and February 2011 in Fizi territory of South Kivu (see map 1) – the recurrent human rights violations in the DRC reached horrifi c proportions, with scores of people, including many children, sexually abused. The Rural Sub-Regions of the East-Province in the Recent Historical Dynamics of Zaïre: from 1960 to 1985 (The Case of the Bas-Uélé) This study takes the Sub-Region of the Bas-Ulélé as an example of the recent history of the rural areas in Zaire. It gives a description from an insider’s point of view based on local research, results in a testimony relating the complete deterioration of rural potentialities in Zaire. The article describes how in the first years after independence, the rich natural resources and the colonial infrastructure brought prosperous development. From 1964 to 1966, however, the Simba-rebellion ravaged the area, destroying a great deal of the infrastructure and caused large-scale massacres among the local population. After the crushing of the rebellion, the subsequent revival was quickly halted by constant bureaucratic hindrances and interference from Mobutu’s MPR. “Zairisation” led to farther deterioration of the economic infrastructure. From 1980 on, the Sub-Region was neglected more and more by the central government and even by its elected representatives. Finally, the liberalising of gold-prospecting withdrew farmers, schoolchildren and teachers form their normal activities leading only to more misery in the area.

Abstract:
AbstractGiven the important contribution of urban consumption in bushmeat trade, information on bushmeat sales in urban markets can provide valuable insights for understanding the dynamics of this trade and its implications for conservation and food security. We monitored bushmeat traded in the market of Kisangani (the provincial capital of the Province Orientale in the Democratic Republic of Congo) and compared data collected in surveys in 2002 and 2008–2009. In both periods more than two-thirds of the carcasses sold were of rodents and ungulates. From 2002 to 2008–2009 the number of carcasses increased by 44% but the equivalent biomass by only 16% because of a significant decrease in medium-sized species (10–50 kg) and an increase in small species (<10 kg). The number of carcasses of large species increased between the two periods and those of diurnal monkeys increased fourfold. In both periods smoked bushmeat was one of the cheapest sources of protein available year-round, together with caterpillars, which were only available during the rainy season, and pork. Prices of other domestic meat were significantly higher. This study identified an increase in the market of highly threatened species such as okapi Okapia johnstoni and small diurnal monkeys and the continued presence of protected species, and also highlights the food security role that bushmeat plays for poor urban people who cannot afford alternative sources of protein.

Abstract:
SummaryWhen sleeping sickness was discovered to be epidemic in the Congo Free State in 1904, the administration responded by attempting to implement public health measures which had evolved in Europe in relation to plague and cholera epidemics. These measures were to identify and isolate victims and suspected victims of the disease and to map out the infected and uninfected zones. This article describes the early sleeping-sickness campaign of the Belgian authorities in the Uele District of Province Orientale between 1904 and 1914, focusing on the formation of isolation camps or lazarets. Uele district had been identified as a potentially rich and uninfected zone to be protected from contamination by the establishment of acordon sanitaire. Public health policy and practice during this period provides an example of attempted ‘social engineering’ on the part of a colonial authority. While sleeping sickness provided the major impetus for the gradual development of the colonial medical service by the 1920s, the early period between 1903 and World War I was particularly onerous for the African populations in the north-east. The public health policy was perceived by many Africans as one more element in the on-going conquest and exploitation of the region. Examples are provided to demonstrate the ways in which numerous sleeping-sickness regulations affected African societies in Uele.

The end of the Roman conquest of the territory inhabited by the Illyrian peoples entered the final phase of pacification with the end of the Great Illyrian revolt (6-9 AD). After the establishment of the government, the situation the Romans encountered in the province of Dalmatia was heterogeneous in terms of spiritual and material culture of the peoples that inhabited this territory. Oriental cults started to spread as the result of imperial propaganda, the army, merchants from the east, sailors, immigrants from eastern provinces, freedmen and slaves. The monuments that witness about the presence of the cult of Phrygian goddess Cybele and Egyptian goddess Isis date back to the 1st century AD in the territory of the province of Dalmatia. These cults had arrived to Rome centuries before whence they started to spread across the imperial provinces.

AbstractThe feeding habits of oriental sole, Brachirus orientalis (Bloch & Schneider) were investigated using 300 male and female specimens collected from coastal waters of Bushehr Province (Persian Gulf) between June 2015 and July 2016. The total length of females and males ranged from 16.2 to 38.5 cm and 14.1 to 29.1 cm, respectively. Of the total number of stomachs examined, 225 were empty (vacuity index = 77%). This index varied significantly over the year (P < 0.05), with maximum values in April and September and minimum in October and May. The B. orientalis diet was composed of nine prey species belonging to five classes. The most important prey items were Crustacea and Mollusca (Bivalvia and Gastropoda). Diet composition showed little seasonal variation, and Crustacea, Bivalvia, and Gastropoda were the most important prey items in all seasons. Sex did not appear to have any significant effects on dietary composition, and the main prey items were consumed by both males and females (P > 0.05).

Abstract:
Background and Purpose: This study presents the analysis of photosynthetic pigments, proline, total soluble protein, total amino acids, glucose, sucrose, total soluble sugars, total amount of phenolic compounds and flavonoids, malondialdehyde (MDA) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) concentration in the leaf samples collected from oriental beech trees, which are naturally spread in Kastamonu Province, Turkey, with differing ages, enzyme activities of ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT) and superoxide dismutase (SOD). Material and Methods: The research was carried out on oriental beech trees (Fagus orientalis L.) of different ages located at 1300 m high elevation in Ahlat Village of Kastamonu Province, Turkey. Oriental beech trees of different ages (≥25, ≥50, ≥100, ≥200 and ≥600 years-old) constituted the material of this study. In leaf samples taken from trees of different ages, photosynthetic pigments (chlorophyll a, chlorophyll b, total chlorophyll and carotenoid), proline, total soluble protein, total amino acid, glucose, sucrose, total soluble sugars, the amount of total phenolic compounds and flavonoids, MDA, H2O2 concentration, enzyme activities of APX, CAT and SOD, as well as the relationship between the total content of C, N and H elements and the tree ages were studied. Results: As a result of the research conducted, significant differences were determined in terms of chlorophyll, total phenolic compound, flavonoid, glucose, amounts of sucrose, nitrogenous compounds, proline, total soluble protein, MDA, H 2O2 concentrations, and the activities of APX, CAT and SOD in the leaves of oriental beech trees with differing ages. The highest content of chlorophyll a was found to be in the youngest age group of ≥25 years. Total chlorophyll is low in young trees and high in middle-aged, old and very old trees. According to the results obtained, it was concluded that the MDA and H2O2 concentrations in the trees did not vary depending on the age of trees only, but also on the genotype, environmental conditions and metabolic activities. It was concluded that the fact that the total chlorophyll, phenolic compounds and sucrose content in oriental beech trees are high and that MDA content is low could have an influence on the long life of ≥600 years-old oriental beech trees. Conclusions: The activity of photosynthesis is related to leaf characteristics more than the age of trees.

Abstract:
Detailed molecular genetic research on amphibian populations has a significant role in understanding the genetic adaptability to local environments. The oriental fire-bellied toads (Bombina orientalis) were artificially introduced to Beijing from Shandong Province in 1927, and since then, this separated population went through an independent evolution. To explore the differentiation of the introduced population with its original population, this study analyzed the genetic structure of the oriental fire-bellied toad, based on the mitochondrial genome control region and six microsatellite sites. The results showed that the haplotype diversity and nucleotide diversity of the mitochondrial D-loop region partial sequences of the Beijing Botanical Garden population and the Baiwangshan population were lower than those of the Shangdong Kunyushan population. Microsatellite marker analysis also showed that the observed heterozygosity and expected heterozygosity of the Beijing populations were lower than those of the Kunyushan population. The phylogenetic trees and network diagrams of haplotypes indicated that the three populations were not genetically separated. However, the structure analysis showed a genetic differentiation and categorized the sampling individuals into Beijing and Shandong genetic clusters, which indicated a tendency for isolated evolution in the Beijing population. Although the Beijing populations showed a decline in genetic diversity, it was still at a moderate level, which could maintain the survival of the population. Thus, there is no need to reintroduce new individuals from the Kunyushan source population.

Abstract:
Amphibians of the Mexican Cloud Forest have a great diversity but are highly threatened. Forest endemisms are useful for recognizing biodiversity hotspots; furthermore, the interaction of historical and current events has generated areas of endemism that can be used for biological conservation in forest fragments; therefore, their identification is an essential part of the management and planning of biological conservation. Thus, our objective was to identify areas of endemism in the cloud forests of Mexico through the analysis of geographical distribution of 126 species of amphibians, as well as their conservation status to obtain information that supports the selection of priority areas for conservation. For this, the endemicity analysis method was used with three spatial scales, 1°×1°, 0.5°×0.5° and 0.25°×0.25° (lat/long), to achieve more complete results and avoid visual overrepresentation of areas of endemism. Seventeen consensus areas distributed in four of the five provinces of the Mexican Transition Zone were identified. The province of the Sierra Madre del Sur exhibited the highest amount of endemism areas, followed by the Sierra Madre Oriental, the East of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, and the Altos de Chiapas. Results indicate that the endemic areas of the Sierra Madre Oriental and Sierra Madre del Sur provinces are composed of amphibians included in the IUCN red list and the Official Mexican Standard NOM-059. Thus, the small areas of endemism in eastern and western Sierra Madre del Sur, nested within larger ones may be used to increase the protected areas of cloud forests in Mexico.

Abstract:
A test of the biogeographical regionalization of the Mexican Transition Zone (MTZ) is presented, resulting from a Parsimony Analysis of Endemicity (PAE) based on the distributional patterns of 575 species of the family Curculionidae. The analysis was carried out in three stages. First, a PAE was carried out to define a general regionalization scheme for the MTZ, identifying areas and microareas of endemism for the entire area. Then PAEs were undertaken for each province. Third, a PAE was carried out to determine the relationship between the provinces of the MTZ. The analysis of the entire MTZ resulted in four areas and 57 microareas of endemism, while in the independent analysis of each province, five areas and 67 microareas of endemism were obtained. Both analyses coincide basically in the location of the areas and microareas of endemism, which are subordinated to biogeographic units defined by different authors. In the consensus cladogram of the third stage of the analysis, the Transmexican Volcanic Belt (TVB) is the sister area to the Sierra Madre Occidental (SMOC); then, they are the sister area to the Sierra Madre Oriental (SMOR); and finally the previous provinces are united in a trichotomy with the Sierra Madre del Sur (SMS) and the Chiapas Highlands (CHIS). It is assumed that the differences found when comparing our results with different cladistic biogeographic studies of the MTZ reflect the complexity of the study area. Since the data used to perform the analyses are not uniform, and both geographical units and taxa are different, the comparison between different analyses is difficult.

Abstract:
The genusMalacomeles(Decne.) G. N. Jones (RosaceaesubtribePyrinae) represents several fruit shrubs, which is mainly distributed in North and Central America, from southern USA to Honduras and Guatemala, although the main distribution of this genus is in Mexico. Five species of the genusMalacomeleshave been reported to exist in Mexico.Malacomelesis widely distributed in several mountainous ranges in Mexico, although it is unknown where most of the diversity of theMalacomelesgenus is located in the country. The aim of this biogeographic study was to determine the areas of highest diversity of the genusMalacomelesin Mexico based on species richness and diversity indices in order to identify the best regions of Mexico to collect germplasm. The results indicated that most of the diversity of the genusMalacomelesis concentrated in northeast Mexico, mainly in the biogeographic province of Sierra Madre Oriental. In this province, the highest values on three biodiversity indices were found. Thus, this area can be considered as the priority area to collect the germplasm ofMalacomeles.M. denticulatais the predominant and the most interesting species in Mexico from the viewpoint of collecting plant genetic resources; this species is mainly distributed in the provinces of Trans-Mexican Volcanic Axis, Mexican Plateau and Sierra Madre del Sur, where secondary priority areas to collect germplasm are located.
