Abstract:
Purpose This study aims to examine, which dynamic capabilities (DC) are used by companies from post-socialist emerging markets (PSEM) during their internationalization. Design/methodology/approach The paper uses a DC perspective together with the new internalization theory to examine the internationalization of companies from PSEM. It uses qualitative data from the interviews with 7 PSEM experts and the 16 cases of the multinational companies from PSEM. Findings PSEM companies develop particular DC while expanding abroad whereby innovation capability helps them internationalize beyond neighboring countries and overcome the stigma of being less competitive than advanced economies. Adaptability is the DC that helps private companies, which differ from state-owned PSEM firms, overcome the uncertainties of the changing environment. Innovation capability and absorptive capability help PSEM firms surmount their geographical position. Alliancing activity is the DC that is used at the initial stages of internationalization to boost technological development. Originality/value The study contributes to the body of knowledge on the internationalization of companies from transition economies and sheds light on the nature of DC for the successful international expansion of PSEM firms. It attempts to address the lack of empirical studies on DC. Methodological value is in the combination of case studies’ analysis and interviews with experts, which adds novelty to the studied subject.

Abstract:
ABSTRACT A tripartite resistance-nodulation-cell division (RND) transporter system, called the PseABC efflux system, was identified at the left border of the syr-syp genomic island of Pseudomonas syringae pv. syringae strain B301D. The PseABC efflux system was located within a 5.7-kb operon that encodes an outer membrane protein (PseA), a periplasmic membrane fusion protein (PseB), and an RND-type cytoplasmic membrane protein (PseC). The PseABC efflux system exhibited amino acid homology to a putative RND efflux system of Ralstonia solanacearum, with identities of 48% for PseA, 51% for PseB, and 61% for PseC. A nonpolar mutation within the pseC gene was generated by nptII insertional mutagenesis. The resultant mutant strain showed a larger reduction in syringopeptin secretion (67%) than in syringomycin secretion (41%) compared to parental strain B301D (P < 0.05). A β-glucuronidase assay with a pseA::uidA reporter construct indicated that the GacS/GacA two-component system controls expression of the pseA gene. Quantitative real-time reverse transcription-PCR was used to determine transcript levels of the syringomycin (syrB1) and syringopeptin (sypA) synthetase genes in strain B301D-HK4 (a pseC mutant). The expression of the sypA gene by mutant strain B301D-HK4 corresponded to approximately 13% of that by parental strain B301D, whereas the syrB1 gene expression by mutant strain B301D-HK4 was nearly 61% (P < 0.05). In addition, the virulence of mutant strain B301D-HK4 for immature cherry fruits was reduced by about 58% compared to parental strain B301D (P < 0.05). Although the resistance of mutant strain B301D-HK4 to any antibiotic used in this study was not reduced compared to parental strain B301D, a drug-supersensitive acrB mutant of Escherichia coli showed two- to fourfold-increased resistance to acriflavine, erythromycin, and tetracycline upon heterologous expression of the pseA, pseB, and pseC genes (pseABC efflux genes). The PseABC efflux system is the first RND transporter system described for P. syringae, and it has an important role in secretion of syringomycin and syringopeptin.

Abstract:
We propose a power series extender method to obtain approximate solutions of nonlinear differential equations. In order to assess the benefits of this proposal, three nonlinear problems of different kind are solved and compared against the power series solution obtained using an approximative method. The problems are homogeneous Lane-Emden equation ofαindex, governing equation of a burning iron particle, and an explicit differential-algebraic equation related to battery model simulations. The results show that PSEM generates highly accurate handy approximations requiring only a few steps. The main advantage of PSEM is to extend the domain of convergence of the power series solutions of approximative methods as Taylor series method, homotopy perturbation method, homotopy analysis method, variational iteration method, differential transform method, and Adomian decomposition method, among many others. From the application of PSEM, it results in handy easy computable expressions that extend the domain of convergence of high order power series solutions.

Abstract:
While a flurry of studies and Integrated Assessment Models (IAMs) have independently investigated the impacts of switching mitigation policies in response to different climate scenarios, little is understood about the feedback effect of how human risk perceptions of climate change could contribute to switching climate mitigation policies. This study presents a novel machine learning approach, utilizing a probabilistic structural equation model (PSEM), for understanding complex interactions among climate risk perceptions, beliefs about climate science, political ideology, demographic factors, and their combined effects on support for mitigation policies. We use machine learning-based PSEM to identify the latent variables and quantify their complex interaction effects on support for climate policy. As opposed to a priori clustering of manifest variables into latent variables that is implemented in traditional SEMs, the novel PSEM presented in this study uses unsupervised algorithms to identify data-driven clustering of manifest variables into latent variables. Further, information theoretic metrics are used to estimate both the structural relationships among latent variables and the optimal number of classes within each latent variable. The PSEM yields an R2 of 92.2% derived from the “Climate Change in the American Mind” dataset (2008–2018 [N = 22,416]), which is a substantial improvement over a traditional regression analysis-based study applied to the CCAM dataset that identified five manifest variables to account for 51% of the variance in policy support. The PSEM uncovers a previously unidentified class of “lukewarm supporters” (~59% of the US population), different from strong supporters (27%) and opposers (13%). These lukewarm supporters represent a wide swath of the US population, but their support may be capricious and sensitive to the details of the policy and how it is implemented. Individual survey items clustered into latent variables reveal that the public does not respond to “climate risk perceptions” as a single construct in their minds. Instead, PSEM path analysis supports dual processing theory: analytical and affective (emotional) risk perceptions are identified as separate, unique factors, which, along with climate beliefs, political ideology, and race, explain much of the variability in the American public’s support for climate policy. The machine learning approach demonstrates that complex interaction effects of belief states combined with analytical and affective risk perceptions; as well as political ideology, party, and race, will need to be considered for informing the design of feedback loops in IAMs that endogenously feedback the impacts of global climate change on the evolution of climate mitigation policies.

ABSTRACT A conjugative IncL/M plasmid (pSEM) conferring resistance to gentamicin, amikacin, kanamycin, sulfonamides, and expanded-spectrum cephalosporins was found in pathogenic strains of Salmonella enterica serotype Typhimurium. Resistance to aminoglycosides was encoded by a sul1-type class 1 integron (In-t3). An extended-spectrum beta-lactamase gene, bla SHV-5, was identified 3.5 kb downstream of the integrase (intI1) gene of In-t3. Nucleotide sequence analysis of the 5.3-kb bla SHV-5–In-t3 region of pSEM highlighted striking similarities with IncL/M plasmids isolated from nosocomial gram-negative pathogens, conferring resistance to expanded-spectrum cephalosporins and aminoglycosides.

Abstract:
Abstract Primary aldosteronism (PA) is the most frequent form of secondary arterial hypertension. The identification of germline or somatic mutations in different genes coding for ion channels (KCNJ5, CACNA1D, CACNA1H and CLCN2) and ATPases (ATP1A1 and ATP2B3) defines PA as a channelopathy. These mutations promote increased intracellular calcium concentrations and activation of calcium signaling, the main trigger for aldosterone biosynthesis. The aim of our study was to elucidate the mechanisms underlying the development of PA by modulating calcium signaling using chemogenetic tools. We have generated two different adrenocortical H295R_S2 cell lines stably expressing different chimeric ion channels generated by fusing the mutated extracellular ligand binding domain of the α7 nicotinic acetylcholine receptor to the ion pore domain of large Cys-loop receptor ion channel family; these receptors constitute PSAM (Pharmacologically Selective Actuator Modules). The mutations introduced in the ligand-binding domain allow to use synthetic ligands, PSEM (Pharmacologically Selective Effector Molecules) to activate the PSAM. We used two different PSAM: the chimeric receptor α7-5HT3 or a mutated acetylcholine receptor nAchR, allowing respectively modulation of sodium or calcium entry into the cells in response to the specific PSEM: Varenicline for α7-5HT3 or Compound 9S for mutated nAChR. The cells lines were characterized in terms of intracellular calcium concentrations, cell proliferation, aldosterone production and steroidogenic gene expression. Cells expressing α7-5HT3 treated for 24h with increasing concentrations of Varenicline (10–9 to 10-5M) showed increased intracellular calcium concentrations and an increase in expression of steroidogenic genes such as StAR CYP17A1, CYP21A2 and CYP11B2. Cell proliferation was not affected. Calcium entry into cells expressing the mutated nAChR receptor treated for 24h with increasing concentrations of Compound 9S (10–9 to 10-5M) induced an increase in expression of steroidogenic genes such as StAR, CYP21A2 and HSD3B2, but not CYP11B2. Similarly to the results obtained in cells expressing α7-5HT3, cell proliferation was unaffected in response to Compound 9S. These cell lines, in which we can modulate the intracellular calcium concentration « on demand », are a useful tool for a better understanding of the alterations of intracellular ion balance and calcium signaling in the pathophysiology of PA.

Abstract:
The compound technological talents training of power source and ecomaterials (PSEM) is one of the most important development strategies for constructing a resource-saving and environment-friendly society. Effective Quality Engineering (EQE), using the engineering method to solve the quality problem of a new product, is a basic theory method. In this paper, the quality design method of EQE was integrated into the teaching of inorganic non-metallic professional courses. On this basis, the teaching mode of initiative introduction and requirement assisted reading was discussed. After six years of teaching practice, it is proved that the basic theory of EQE and the new teaching ways can be effectively applied to the training of compound technological talents of PSEM. Especially, through this method, the designed materials exhibit optimal quality.

Abstract:
Good health is the most important and very necessary characteristic for stress-free, skillful, and hardworking people with a cooperative environment to create a sustainable society. Validating two algorithms, namely, sequential minimal optimization for regression (SMOreg) using vector machine and linear regression (LR) and using their predicted cancer patients’ cases, this study presents a patient’s stress estimation model (PSEM) to forecast their families’ stress for patients’ sustainable health and better care with early management by under-study cancer hospitals. The year-wise predictions (1998-2010) by LR and SMOreg are verified by comparing with observed values. The statistical difference between the predictions (2021-2030) by these models is analyzed using a statistical t -test. From the data of 217067 patients, patients’ stress-impacting factors are extracted to be used in the proposed PSEM. By considering the total population of under-study areas and getting the predicted population (2021-2030) of each area, the proposed PSEM forecasts overall stress for expected cancer patients (2021-2030). Root mean square error (RMSE) (1076.15.46) for LR is less than RSME for SMOreg (1223.75); hence, LR remains better than SMOreg in forecasting (2011-2020). There is no significant statistical difference between values (2021-2030) predicted by LR and SMOreg ( p value = 0.767 > 0.05 ). The average stress for a family member of a cancer patient is 72.71%. It is concluded that under-study areas face a minimum of 2.18% stress, on average 30.98% stress, and a maximum of 94.81% overall stress because of 179561 expected cancer patients of all major types from 2021 to 2030.

Abstract:
Blood–spinal cord barrier (BSCB) disruption is thought to contribute to motoneuron (MN) loss in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). It is currently unclear whether impairment of the BSCB is the cause or consequence of MN dysfunction and whether its restoration may be directly beneficial. We revealed that SOD1G93A, FUSΔNLS, TDP43G298S, and Tbk1+/− ALS mouse models commonly shared alterations in the BSCB, unrelated to motoneuron loss. We exploit PSAM/PSEM chemogenetics in SOD1G93A mice to demonstrate that the BSCB is rescued by increased MN firing, whereas inactivation worsens it. Moreover, we use DREADD chemogenetics, alone or in multiplexed form, to show that activation of Gi signaling in astrocytes restores BSCB integrity, independently of MN firing, with no effect on MN disease markers and dissociating them from BSCB disruption. We show that astrocytic levels of the BSCB stabilizers Wnt7a and Wnt5a are decreased in SOD1G93A mice and strongly enhanced by Gi signaling, although further decreased by MN inactivation. Thus, we demonstrate that BSCB impairment follows MN dysfunction in ALS pathogenesis but can be reversed by Gi-induced expression of astrocytic Wnt5a/7a.

Abstract:
The goal of the thesis was to find out if dog´s presence and the targeted work of a child with a dog helps improve children´s attention to teaching and their results. The majority of academic literature shows that dog assisted therapy constitutes a clear benefit for children. However, the research on this topic is still in its infancy and the literature is still relatively limited. The thesis deals with the interactions of a child and a dog, especially in the case of children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), specific learning disorders (SPU), and autistic spectrum disorders (PAS). The general conclusion of the existing literature is that animal assisted therapy with the dog helps children with ADHD improve their fine motor skills, increases their attention, decreases aggressiveness, and helps to improve speech disorders. But it is not clear what the impact on other types of disorders is. This thesis first focuses on reviewing the existing literature and its main results that mostly confirm the positive influence of involving the dog in therapy by all observed disorders. The second part of the thesis deals with experimental verification of the hypothesis of a positive influence the dog´s presence and the targeted work of 8 children in the age of 7-9 years from a special school has on attention and behavior in the classroom. Four of the children were diagnosed with ADHD, two with SPU, and two with an autistic spectrum disorder. The experiment was carried out two times a week, and focused on observing the extent of children´s concentration on the given task, calming down, attention while solving the assignments, and reduction of negative physical contacts among observed subjects. The data collection took place during regular classes. Once in a week, the class was preceded by the animal assisted therapy with the dog, which formed the treatment group. The second session in the week was not preceded by any therapy to establish the control group for the experiment. The results verify our hypothesis by revealing the strengthening of the positive influence of teaching on the observed skills of the children. The positive influence of the dog is supported by the fact that the children achieved more success in its presence. However, further research on larger samples and children from other age categories is needed.

Ouss, Etienne. Thesis, Lyon, 2018. http://www.theses.fr/2018LYSEC024.

Abstract:
The framework of this thesis is the monitoring of High-Voltage, Direct Current (HVDC) Gas-Insulated Substations (GIS). The availability of these equipment is crucial for electrical networks operators. That is why they need a preventive diagnosis tool. The solution must be able to detect and identify the insulation defects, so that an appropriate maintenance can be planned. The last 40 years have seen Partial Discharges (PD) measurement become a classic monitoring tool for AC GIS. Unfortunately, there is a lack of scientific information about PD in HVDC GIS, and the known defect identification techniques are very specific to the AC environment. New techniques are thus needed in DC.This thesis aimed to characterize partial discharges in DC gas-insulated substations, and to develop an automatic defect identification tool. The first step of this work was the development of a partial discharge measuring bench. The complete study has been performed in a GIS section, so that the results can be directly applied to industrial equipment. Two kinds of defect have been investigated: protrusions on the high-voltage conductor, and free metallic particles. The influence of parameters such as gas nature and pressure, voltage level and polarity has been evaluated. First, PD have been measured in conformity with the IEC 60270 standard, and the relevance of this method in a DC environment has been evaluated. Then, other measuring chains have been used to improve the characterization of partial discharges: a steady-state current measurement, a high-frequency current measurement, a light measurement and a measurement of Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) waves. Finally, a relevant signature for defect identification has been designed and extracted from DP recordings. A database has been constituted, and an automated recognition algorithm has been implemented. The results show that the conventional PD measurement technique is not fully adapted to partial discharges detection in DC, corona discharges being the most problematic situation. Nevertheless, this method has brought enough information to start the characterization of PD. The limitations of the conventional method have been explained thanks to the results of the other measurements. These other experimental results have led to an actual improvement of the characterization of protrusion and particle-generated partial discharges. An effective automated defect classification solution has been implemented. The signature is derived from the q(Δt) diagram that has been extracted from the data obtained with the partial discharge conventional measurement. The identification algorithm has a neural network structure

Abstract:
The choice of an exchange rate regime is the subject of an old debate in international economy. Two sets of developments have put this issue back on the agenda. Firstly, the adoption of insustainable exchange rate regimes can be seen as one of the causes of the succession of severe currency crises in recent years, among which the crisis of the European exchange rate mechanism in 1992, the Mexican peso in 1994-1995 and the Asian crisis of 1997-1998. The second element is the launch of the euro in 1999 that, undoubtedly, should be considered as one of the most significant developments in the organization of the international monetary and exchange systems since the beginning of the 21th century. From fundamental theories to modern issues, there is no consensus on the choice of the optimal exchange rate regime. Capital mobility, pricing to market, shocks, are decisive factors. Hence, the choice of exchange rate regime depends on the weight of these elements (i). Meanwhile, it is assumed in the literature that the choice of exchange rate regime is crucial to realise the macroeconomic objectives, and this choice has potential implications for economic growth (ii). For several authors, the difficulty to identify this relationship is due to the official exchange rate classification, Levy-Yéyati and Stuzenegger [2000a], Bénassy-Quéré and Coeuré [2001] and Bailliu, Lafrance et Perrault [2001] present alternative methodologies of de facto classifications. We conclude that the use of both kinds of methodologies (de facto and de jure) is imperative. In order to test propositions (i) and (ii), we follow static and dynamic analysis. The factors emphasized in the optimum currency areas theory are probably the major determinants in the choice of an exchange rate regime in Maghreb countries. The exchange rate regime has an impact on economic growth, both through trade and public consumption in the economies of the ten Mediterranean countries of the Mediterranean. Finally, the presence of a sound monetary policy, rather than regime change in itself, constitutes a determinant of economic performance of countries in the Mediterranean Area

The trend today is to develop high voltage direct current (HVDC) technology for the future electric network because it offers some advantages for the transmission on long distances. The development of HVDC networks leads to an increasing need of gas insulated substations (GIS). A problem to be dealt with when an insulator is subjected to a continuous electric field is the variation of the resistivity with the electric field and the temperature and the accumulation of space charges that can lead to dielectric breakdown. In alumina-filled epoxy resin, used as insulating material for GIS spacer, the influence of space charge start to come out when the electric fields exceed several kV/mm, corresponding to values envisaged for the future HVDC GIS.Despite that non-destructive methods exist to determine the space charge distribution in solid insulators, none of them are directly applicable to insulation structures installed in the HVDC GIS.So, the main objective of this work is to design and set up a measurement technique to observe the internal electric field and the accumulated charges. The developed method must be non-destructive and adapted for a cylindrical geometry of an insulator used as a busbar insulation support.By using the experimental bench set up, the behavior of the composite material regarding the space charge will be studied, in particular according to different thermoelectric stresses. The final aim is to contribute to the optimization of the design of this type of insulator, based on the results from space charge measurements

Abstract:
Located our analysis within the countries of the southern shores of the Mediterranean (CSSM), while largely considering a case study on growth and financial system development as well ason small and medium enterprises/industries (SMEs/SMIs) in Algeria. In the first chapter, we studied the evolution of financial liberalization policy and its effects on the development of financial systems. Next, we analyzed the limits of this policy, which has been and is still the basis of the restructuring process of the financial systems, directly related to the financing of SMEs/SMIs. In the second chapter, we studied the content of what is meant when talking about internal financial liberalization, which is at the core of financial system restructuring in the CSSM. At the same time, we explained what external financial liberalization is by examining changes in foreign capital flows bound for the CSSM. In the last chapter, our research has focused, on the one hand, on a statistical and econometric study regarding the growth and the competitiveness of SMEs/SMIs in the current context of globalization and trade, and on the other hand, on business financing and growth in the restructuring programs implemented in the Maghreb countries. As far as this last point is considered, we have developed an original study on a sample of Algerian SMEs and SMIs

Abstract:
SMEs represent 90% of emerging economies. They are dual, both engine for the world economy and vulnerable because of their excessive indebtedness and the weight of informal activities. We think private equity can enhance and spread this economic traction that only qualifies emerging countries. Thus, our question appears as: “Which model for emerging markets private equity?”. We select an inductive approach to address constraints of a limited research literature and a difficult access to data. Through the theoretical Timmons’ model, we perform a longitudinal clinical study of a private equity fund in Egypt, during its inception from 2008 to 2011. We design from our research an entrepreneurial private equity model, dedicated to emerging markets and inspired by venture capital

Abstract:

Thesis, Lyon, 2020. http://www.theses.fr/2020LYSEC019.

Full text
Abstract:
Because of its excellent dielectric properties, sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is currently the most used gas in gas insulated substations (GIS). However, its greenhouse capacities are well known, with a global warming potential of 23900 times that of CO2 over a 100 years period, and an approximately 3200 years lifetime in the atmosphere. Thus, since the Kyoto summit (COP 3), international authorities tend to reduce or ban its use. For the past several years, manufacturers investigated more eco-friendly alternative solutions, showing equivalent or superior physical properties in comparison with SF6. One of the suggested solutions is the fluoronitrile (C4F7N), a gas having alone a dielectric withstand 2.7 times higher than SF6. However, its high liquefaction temperature requires to dilute it for use, mixed with CO2. O2 can also be added to address issues regarding the gas mixture decomposition during arc interruption. The resulting gas mixture can be used at relatively low temperature, with dielectric properties close to that of SF6. To correctly use this new mixture in GIS, its characterization must be completed by the study of its dielectric behavior at the interface with solid insulators used in the stations. Based upon previous studies found in literature, a first set of experiments was conducted under radial geometry in order to measure the discharges extensions without flashover, to be compared to those obtained in SF6. A second comparative study was then conducted in tangential electric field geometry, allowing to measure streamers propagation velocities during flashover. O2 influence on the gas mixture dielectric strength was also examined. Finally, in order to give sizing criteria for GIS using fluoronitrile/CO2 mixtures as insulating gas, flashover voltages measurements were made under various experimental conditions, including particle pollution on surface, under lightning impulse and alternative voltage

Abstract:
AbstractGrowing concerns in recent years over threats to the foundations of democratic societies posed by misinformation, hate speech, and other problems associated with digital communications have led to renewed calls for greater protection of epistemic rights within policy, advocacy, and academic fora. Institutionally mandated to promote citizenship, Public Service Media (PSM) organisations have an important role to play in supporting epistemic rights. We suggest four main conditions are required for this and in doing so we introduce the concept of epistemic injustice as a key to understanding the role of PSM. First, PSM are premised upon strong political commitment. At a time when this political commitment is dwindling, it is imperative that civil society, academia, and international organisations continue to make the case for PSM strong. Second, we argue that PSM need to evolve with the times and be allowed to use new transmission means, build new platforms, and innovate. Third, we argue that PSM have to move beyond supporting epistemic rights, as they have traditionally been bestowed, and contribute to epistemic justice, by questioning the existing power structures of knowledge. Finally, PSM need to work together with other educational and cultural institutions towards the creation of an epistemic commons, countering the privatisation of communitive spaces and striving to make knowledge accessible to all.

Abstract:
Abstract Physical scale modelling (PSM) is an experimental technology that has been used to evaluate and design shipboard impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems. PSM is also a preferred tool used for validating numerical modelling results owing to the well-controlled conditions in PSM experiments. However, one issue in using PSM for the validation of numerical modelling results is the lack of information on the actual polarization behavior of the cathodes on a model hull during PSM experiments. Consequently, the polarization curve data used as boundary conditions in numerical modeling trials is usually different from the polarization behavior of the cathodes in PSM experiments. This difference can result in a discrepancy between the numerical modelling and the PSM results that is difficult to separate from other numerical errors. A discrete area current control (DACC) technique was developed in a previous ICCP PSM study to simulate the polarization behavior of a propeller material under various conditions. The present study extended the DACC technique to simulating the polarization curve behavior of multiple discrete cathodes on a model hull. The application of the DACC technique also made it possible for both the PSM and numerical modelling trials to use the same sets of polarization curve data as inputs or as boundaries in the validation studies. This paper demonstrates the use of the DACC technique to simulate the polarization behaviors of a propeller material and three paint damage patches. The PSM results obtained under different polarization behaviors of propeller and hull materials are also used to validate the numerical modelling results obtained under the same polarization conditions.

Abstract:
Abstract Physical scale modelling (PSM) is a methodology in which a large structure subject to cathodic protection is physically modelled by maintaining a linear relationship between the model size and the conductivity of the electrolyte. In this way, the resistance path for current flow through the electrolyte for the model is maintained similar to that for the full-scale structure. PSM has been used in some NATO countries to evaluate and design shipboard impressed current cathodic protection (ICCP) systems. One issue that is not well resolved in the use of PSM is the altered polarization behavior of propeller materials in diluted seawater with reduced conductivity, as a result of the change in the conditioning film on these materials. Another issue is that the polarization behavior under flow conditions is not well represented in PSM. These issues affect the accurate modelling of shipboard ICCP systems. A discrete area current control (DACC) technique has been developed to address these two issues. This current control technique is capable of simulating the polarization behavior of propeller materials obtained in undiluted seawater under various conditions. This paper describes the functional details of the DACC technique, and demonstrates the application of the DACC technique for the simulation of the polarization behavior of propeller materials. Other applications of the DACC technique in PSM studies are also discussed.

Abstract:
Abstract The present work is concerned with predicting the power flow between two coupled substructures with parameter uncertainties. The power flow is averaged over an ensemble of systems due to the variation of the system parameters. The ultimate aim is to develop a statistical method which may be applied to the mid-frequency range of vibration for a complex structure. The system considered in this paper is two coupled, nominally identical beams on simple supports, with a torsional spring attached at the coupling point. Various methods are presented to calculate the power flow for this system. The Parameter-based Statistical Energy Method (PSEM) is applied to a classical modal solution and a wave solution. The wave approach appears to be more accurate and computationally efficient for this one-dimensional system. The power flow formulated by applying Component Mode Synthesis (CMS) is also presented. It is seen that the CMS formulation may provide a framework for the efficient numerical analysis of power flow in a general complex structure, which may be modeled by the finite element method.

Abstract:
The presence of an extensive carbonate platform in the northern part of the East Natuna Basin has been widely known since seismic was first acquired in the 1970’s. From a seismic imaging standpoint, the occurrence of a massive carbonate interval in shallower depth is one of the contributing factors causing low seismic resolution in the underlying section beneath the top of the carbonate. A 3D seismic volume that was acquired in the northern part of East Natuna and processed to PSTM in 2010 proved the existence of the carbonate platform that covers the most part of the 3D area, but also showed that PSTM processing was not sufficient to deliver good enough seismic resolution of the overall seismic dataset. Seismic 3D FWI PSDM reprocessing was applied in 2021 and showed tremendous improvement in seismic resolution, as it was able to capture greater details in the shallower section, specifically the imaging of carbonate platform. This study will showcase the development and complexities of Natuna carbonate platform by using the combination of various geophysical datasets from the latest 2021 3D FWI PSDM reprocessing. It also demonstrates the practical application of seismic palinspatic restoration to investigate the growth of a carbonate platform from early to final stage and highlight the geological features in PSDM FWI reprocessed data that previously was not able to be imaged on the original PSTM processing. Three geophysical datasets including PSDM seismic stack, velocity, and variance are utilized as the main datasets. Volumes were flattened at the base of carbonate to generate a series of seismic profiles and depth slices from base to top of carbonate. Integrating these datasets is able to divide the carbonate platform into two growth stages: a lower and an upper interval with clear velocity differences. Two carbonate regions with different seismic facies characteristics and visible barrier are identified, proving the greater complexities within the carbonate platform. Intra-reef channels, faults, and reef talus are now highly visible as the result of high resolution PSDM dataset.

Maletta, Giovanna, and Mike Lewis. Post-shipment On-site Inspections and Stockpile Management Assistance: Bridging Gaps. Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.55163/ulfp1679.

Full text
Abstract:
Post-shipment on-site inspections and international assistance in physical security and stockpile management (PSSM) have different scopes and objectives. On-site inspections allow exporting states to check exported military materiel to ensure that the importer is complying with its commitments, while PSSM assistance aims to improve states’ weapons and ammunition management systems. However, both instruments allow foreign specialists to visit a state’s weapons and ammunition storage facilities and enable information gathering to assess their integrity and identify possible diversion risks. This policy brief highlights that building informal linkages between these instruments, especially with regard to states and actors that conduct inspections and are involved in funding or implementing PSSM assistance, could contribute towards establishing more comprehensive forms of post-shipment cooperation. In addition, applying lessons learned from PSSM assistance in terms of gaining access to states’ facilities, cooperating with the beneficiary importing states, and identifying limitations and opportunities associated with the use of tracking technologies could help to address some of the challenges encountered when conducting on-site inspections. PSSM assistance programmes could also include modules to raise awareness about on-site inspections and be a source of expertise that could assist states when implementing these controls.

Abstract:
This document provides a guide to the key aspects of implementing Propensity-Score Matching (PSM) methodology. It summarizes the basic conditions under which PSM can be used to estimate the impact of a program and the data required, presenting examples of PSM applications. It explains how the Conditional Independence Assumption, combined with the Overlap Condition, reduces selection bias when participation in a program is determined by observable characteristics. It also describes different matching algorithms and some tests to assess the quality of the matching.

Abstract:
This project evaluated consensus standards, best practices, and regulatory requirements related to process safety management (PSM) topics to support DOT PHMSA's strategy to update its regulatory requirements for safety management systems for LNG facilities in 49 CFR Part 193. The project commenced on August 1, 2018, and supported PHMSA as it responded to President Trump's April 10, 2019, Executive Order to initiate a rulemaking to update 49 CFR 193. At PHMSA's direction, the analysis primarily focused on comparing PSM-related requirements in 49 CFR 193 and its primary incorporated-by-reference industry-standard NFPA 59A Standard for the Production, Storage, and Handling of Liquefied Natural Gas to those in 1) 29 CFR 1910.119 (OSHA's PSM Standard); and 2) API Recommended Practice 1173 Pipeline Safety Management Systems. The project team also reviewed more than 15 additional leading global references related to PSM as supplementary resources to help ensure a robust and thorough analysis for PHMSA.
