Abstract:
The article examines the Hebrew names of precious stones that are mentioned in the Bible in the books of Exodus (28:17-20 and 39:10-13), Ezekiel (27:16; 18:13), partly in Job (28:2-19) and in other passages of the Bible. Those names are characterized by the fact that they do not have an exact meaning in the biblical language and today they differ from the original language and do not mean the same realities as in the Biblical era. The purpose of the article is to explore the names of precious stones in Biblical, postBiblical, medieval, and modern Hebrew. The study of precious stones in different epochs of the development of the Hebrew language is a significant issue for Semitic philology, since many of them still do not have a clear gemological identification. That study was carried out on the material of text corpora in Hebrew of different epochs of the language development in the contextual, semantic, philological (word origin) and comparative (comparisons between translations of different epochs) aspects. The study used descriptive and comparative-historical methods.

Abstract:
The article based on the study of scientific sources and investigative practice examines the features of the search during the investigation of illegal extraction of precious stones of organogenic formation. It is noted that the search is the investigative (search) action that is carried out in almost every criminal proceeding during the investigation of illegal extraction of precious stones of organogenic formation. At the same time, the procedure is multifaceted, which is due to the need not only to achieve the task of justice but also not to restrict the rights and freedoms of citizens. It is noted that in preparation for this investigative (search) action it is mandatory to obtain information: about the persons who will be searched; about the objects you need to find; about the place where the search will be conducted. The efficiency of the organization of the tactical operation “Group Search” is argued. It is noted that if there are several places of search, it is necessary to conduct a tactical operation “Allowing a search with a negative result”.However, if the wanted persons are to be detained, a tactical operation “Search – Detention” is being carried out. The author gives the list of objects that are the object of the search and the criteria for their delimitation in the investigation of illegal extraction of precious stones of organogenic formation. Attention is paid to the tactical and organizational principles of this investigative (search) action. Several problems during searches in criminal proceedings of this category are analyzed and ways to eliminate them are suggested. Recommendations for quality evidence collection are provided. The author pays special attention to the fact that the success of the search and, ultimately, all effective and impartial pretrial investigation depends on the qualification of the investigator, timeliness of the search, use of tactics, performance of tasks.

Abstract:
It has been argued persuasively that we should see the art of the portrait miniaturist as being closely related to the art of the goldsmith – with the painted ‘jewel’ of the portrait set into a richly ornamented piece of jewelry. Indeed, there is a close affinity between Nicholas Hilliard’s art of portrait miniature painting and goldsmithery. His Treatise’s famous section devoted to precious stones reflects this idea, as it is concerned with the relationship of those stones to the colors used in the miniatures, colors that can be seen as surrogates for the stones themselves. Color, light and shadow – these three aspects of how to render the natural world into paint are closely related: it is the complexity of the relationship that demanded a painting technique that took care not to create chiaroscuro-effects and specifically not let color be ‘corrupted’ by shadows or ‘mixed’ with other colors.

Abstract:
In 1347, a disease of unprecedented mortality reached Italian ports: the Bubonic Plague. In a few years, it spread across the European continent, killing millions of people and leaving a trail of destruction. Amid the urgency of this scenario, in the early years of the epidemic, tractates were created on the pestilence written by doctors and professors from the main centres of medicine on the continent, such as Paris and Bologna; and, in a second moment, from smaller faculties and centres, in increasingly distant parts, creating a map of knowledge. The tractates aimed to explain the aetiology of the disease, hitherto unknown, to propose prophylactic practices and possible treatment, with phlebotomy and the use of medication. In part of the suggested medicines, precious stones such as emerald and sapphire were mentioned recurrently. Until today, we may find some works addressing the use of gemstones in medieval medicine, but usually superficially or attributing an irrationality to their use in treatments. These arguments were revisited and we proposed other ways of understanding the use of precious stones against the Bubonic Plague, based on the knowledge and beliefs that surrounded them. This thesis aims, therefore, to identify and expose the logic behind the use of gemstones against the great pestilence, showing that they contained magical-medical and symbolic-religious qualities, which gave them powers of strengthening, protection and healing, important aspects in fighting the disease. For this purpose, we resorted to an extensive body of documents composed mainly of medical tractates written between 1348 and 1550, ancient and medieval lapidaries and encyclopedias, and exegetical literature.

Abstract:
International taxation, as follows from the theory, is a study of the tax burden on individuals or legal entities in accordance with the tax laws of different countries or international law. Russia, the United States and the EU are global jurisdictions with the most complete tax legislation concerning transfer pricing. In this regard, it is very useful to consider the experience of countries with different principles of taxation of international transactions, which will undoubtedly contribute to improving tax control over international transactions. As a rule, when performing cross-border transactions, the state implements additional control measures, in particular, tax control over transfer pricing. Foreign trade transactions, if the subject of such transactions are goods that are part of one or more of the following commodity groups (oil and goods produced from oil; black metals; non-ferrous metals; mineral fertilizers; precious metals and precious stones) in Russia belong to the category of controlled ones, which necessitates the use of transfer pricing methods. The audit is carried out in relation to the main taxes, namely, VAT, income tax, mineral extraction tax and personal income tax (in relation to individual entrepreneurs), as well as tax on additional income from the extraction of hydrocarbons. The article examines various tools and methods of control over international transactions carried out by both residents and non-residents. The authors consider the experience of countries with different principles of taxation of international transactions, which will contribute to improving and increasing the efficiency of tax control over international transactions, the correctness of calculation and completeness of payment of taxes when applying transfer pricing.

Abstract:
Iran is home to some of the world’s earliest civilizations. The Ashkanian dynasty (550–330 BCE) unified Iran as a superpower empire. It was the largest empire yet seen and the first world empire where the Great Cyrus ruled from the Balkans to North Africa and Central Asia. Subsequently, Iran was invaded by the Macedonians, Arabs, Turks and the Mongolians over the course of its history. During those times, Iran lost much of its territory until a reduced Iran was formed in the nineteenth century CE. Despite the invasions, Iran did not lose its heritage from its previous civilizations, but rather incorporated aspects of the new civilizations into its cultural fabric. Iran has always played an effective role in the natural sciences, medicine, mathematics, astronomy, philosophy and also in mineralogy and gemology. At times, Iran was at the forefront of science and technology, including mineralogy and gemology, which went through stages of development. The first and second stages occurred before and after the introduction of Islam, respectively. More than 30 books were written about minerals and gems during the ancient and Islamic Iranian periods. Those books can be classified into three main groups where the first group included accounts of precious stones, minerals, gems and metals. The second group of books focused on natural history, chemistry and precious stones. The third group of books discussed medicine, pharma-chemistry and medical properties of minerals. The most famous texts were written by early Iranian scientists such as Avicenna, Biruni, Jabir Ibn Hayan, Kandi and Razi. Iran’s role at the forefront of science and technology (including mineralogy and gemology) declined after the collapse of the Safavid dynasty (1501–1736 CE). But recently, during the past 50 years, Iran has made considerable advances in science and technology through education, training and research. This will open a new age of development for Iran in the twenty-first century in science and technology as well as in mineralogy and gemology

Abstract:
War has been instrumental in destroying land and forests and thus is a major contributor to climate change. Degradation due to war has been especially significant in Africa. The African continent, once green, is now almost denuded of its rich forests and pillaged of its precious natural resources due to the brutality of colonisation and more recent postcolonial civil wars. In Sierra Leone the civil war continued for over eleven years from 1991 to 2002 and wrought havoc on the land and forests. Thus the anxiety and trauma suffered by the people not only includes the more visible aspects of human brutality, but also the long lasting effects of ecocide which relate to climate change. Underlying narratives that address traumatic ecological disasters is a sense of anxiety and depression resulting from the existential threat of climate change. This paper demonstrates how narratives can metaphorically represent both ecocide and climate change and argues that such stories help people in tackling the real life stresses of anxiety and trauma. To establish the argument this paper has drawn on scientific and sociological data and placed these vis-à-vis narrative episodes in Aminatta Forna’s novels Ancestor Stones (2006) and The Memory of Love (2010). In these novels Forna depicts the ecological crisis that colonisation and civil war have wrought on Sierra Leone. The anxiety and post-traumatic stress disorder – of war and ecocide – suffered by the fictional Sierra Leonean characters are explained through Cathy Caruth’s trauma theory.

Abstract:
Summary Frederick III and the Presence of the Absent Ruler This article takes as a point of departure the frequent use of Emperor Frederick III’s well-known motto „AEIOV“. It will examine this usage to direct closer scrutiny to the role that material culture played in the practice of rulership during the 15th century. It argues that the Emperor’s well-attested love for precious stones, relics and reliquiaries, for building projects, portraits, medals, and treasure pieces was central to his idea of rulership. Moving beyond the traditional view that only Frederick’s personal taste could explain his extensive love for precious items, and refuting the idea that the rise of the individual is the best master-narrative for understanding our sources, the article highlights the novelty of using material culture for establishing presence in the ruler’s often long absences. Cultural historians have emphasized the importance of ritual and performance for pre-modern rulership. Therefore, the king’s or emperor’s absence left a gap that objects could fill: In showing the ruler as St Christopher, naming his motto or showing his coat of arms, in bringing forward his clothes or the carriages the court had used in an adventus, the ruler’s presence was established, remembered, and promised for the future. In using the material culture of his time in this way, Frederick was able to mitigate one of the weak points in his dominion. Its relatively widespread, heterogeneous, and multicentral character necessarily prohibited him from being at all major centres of the Habsburg lands at the same time. Thus, Frederick initiated a new technique of rulership in absence that not only had its root in the wider cultural context of the late Middle Ages, where discourses of presence started to dominate nearly all aspects of society, but also marked the beginning of a development that led to the all-present portraiture of the early modern world. Understudied and almost unnoticed so far, this article brings a major aspect of pre-modern culture to the fore.

Abstract:
AbstractIn this paper, the author tries to underline some aspects about one of the most important secrets: the secret of our own mortality. It is a paradox, all of us know that we will eventually die, but this knowledge is quite unbearable and makes us anxious, which is why it is very difficult for us to represent our death. This secret of mortality is related to what Freud called “the biological rock” – our supreme and ultimate limit! – which represents the constitutional, biological dimension of the human being in its uniqueness and the way in which our psyche manages this reality, impossible to change. The first part of paper is an exploration in the nature of secrets, healthy and pathogenic ones, known or unknown, conscious and unconscious. There are secrets which represent the intimate core of every person, what Winnicott called “an incommunicado element”. This is very precious, secret and sacred, and allows us to maintain a constant creative dialogue with ourselves and others while also ensuring our psychic sanity. There are also other secrets, pathogenic ones, which we encounter in the perverse, narcissistic structures and that disturb the relations with others. There is a third category of secrets which we call ‘The secrets of Polichinelle’. They are like taboo subjects, as nobody touches them, but everybody knows them. In this category we find all the secrets connected to sexuality and, as a normal extension of them, the secrets linked to our own mortality. In the second part of the paper, the author presents some vignettes from a case, which illustrate the theme of loss and the difficulty in accepting the limits set by the biological rock.

Abstract:
The article analyses the motifs of precious stones present in the 12th century work of Gautier d’Arras, The Eracle Romance (ca. 1176-1184), often called “Byzantine romance”. This motif shows the influence of the Byzantine aesthetics on the French literature of the Middle Ages. Gautier d’Arras assimilates it, but at the same time modifies its sense. He re-defines the courtly ethos and diminishes the aesthetic character of the motif, typical of the oriental poetics. Precious stones are the contested sign of the East because their beauty is understood as the determinant of Virtue rather than outer beauty. This is a new face of the exotic – not only tamed but also moralised. This modification of the generally accepted hierarchy of values enriches the sapiential, moral and formative aspects of the work.
